Speaker: I mean, I don't know. The listeners might really want to hear about it. I will tell you. um Katie, I've developed a new addiction. I have a very addictive personality. Is it Magic the Gathering? Have you become addicted to Magic the Gathering?
Speaker: Thank God, no. But that is related to this film. And I have an entire Charlie's Corner about it. But I'm sure. Oh Jesus Christ. But i I started a puzzle.
Speaker: Uh...
Speaker: I mean you've always liked puzzles, haven't you? I'm I... I... Not really. And then over Thanksgiving... My friend Rosie. Right. started doing a puzzle and she got really like, she was really into the puzzle. And so then we all did puzzles like a group activity. It was a lot of fun.
Speaker: I remember you telling me this, yeah. Yeah, and then Charlie was just like, the Christmas night, you're just like, I want all the puzzle accessories. I need a puzzle mat. I need all the puzzles. and so we tried to hold on hold on let's back up did you say puzzle accessories Yes, puzzle accessories. How many puzzle accessories could there possibly be?
Speaker: um I mean, he was like an Afghan? And after that. A little. Little puzzle earrings. little puzzle We're recording just so you know.
Speaker: Oh and he walks away because he never wants to be heard. Do you have a message for the listeners? We'll cut it out. He wants to wish you a happy hump day. Of course.
Speaker: Yeah, of course. Um. but Some warm milk. Is that a puzzle accessory? Right. Warm milk, some like loafers. No, we have, ah we got a puzzle mat and then it like with like little like puzzle.
Speaker: like things so that you can separate your pieces. Um... It's a whole thing, Katie. um But I was happy for you. Thank you. We started a puzzle a while ago, but it was like a crappy puzzle because like all the pieces were the same cut and there was a lot. It was like a bunch of black cats. And so there's huge chunks of like black.
Speaker: And so you could get it wrong so many ways. they just sound yeah That sounds difficult, yeah. Yeah, because they just all fit together. It was impossible. Um... And. ah So then I started. This puzzle that we've had for a while, which is. of shakespeare's world and so like it's one of those like Where's Waldo of.
Speaker: Like the world of Shakespeare. Yeah. And I started it the other day and I just like. Put on my. My little audio book. And I'll start working on the puzzle and then I'll ah look at my watch and and hours will have passed. hi Jesus.
Speaker: um I start my day with a cup of coffee, working on this puzzle. Can't, can't. Bear to leave the puzzle. um I've done all the edges. And so now I'm just like, well, fuck, I've got so many pieces for the middle. Where do I even begin?
Speaker: um It's a little daunting, if I'm being honest. Oh my god.
Speaker: um But I did text a picture to my friend Rosie and I was just like, Rosie, I get it. i get I'm so addicted to this puzzle. I mean, I get that. Like, audiobooks, it's it's hard to do an audiobook because you need you you want to be doing something else at the same time. And, like, a puzzle is something where you could really pay attention to the audiobook while you're...
Speaker: um puzzling i guess puzzling yeah because like sometimes oh my god i'm such an old woman So i sometimes I'll like knit. while listening to an audio book but like um you know when you get to complicated stitches You gotta pay attention to those stitches. Um...
Speaker: bitches get stitches uh oh that's a good knitting shirt i bet that already exists yeah um
Speaker: Yeah, so. Watch your hands on the table.
Speaker: It just sounds like this. Oh yeah. And I even moved locations so that it wouldn't do that. I'm now back on the floor in my podcast spot. We're both hand talkers, so it's difficult. I know. It's so hard.
Speaker: My problem is that I quack at the table with my hands instead of the emphasis. Oh, yeah. The quack. Quack! um I should just sit on my hand. And then... Then I won't do it. That's it's what my teacher used to make me do in middle school.
Speaker: sit right Sit on your hands so you don't use them. Oh, but now all I'm thinking about is how I want to use my hands. Oh, this is so hard, Katie. But yeah, so how are you?
Speaker: Good, good. We saw the Odyssey. Oh yeah. How was it? it's it's good it's really good like it's it's one of those things that like you know, um some of the worst people in the world are upset about it because... yes like Can you do it? Hold on, I just...
Speaker: I highly doubt that Elon Musk has read The Odyssey. I just don't buy it. I don't know if he's ever read any book. But the Odyssey specifically, I just don't believe. And he's...
Speaker: He's very upset, Emma. I don't know if you know. Why? Why? Because Elliot Page is in it? Yeah. No, because it's, ah you know, well, they cast a black person as Helen of Troy. I think that's ah a major reason. Because she's beautiful.
Speaker: Right. it's It's a whole thing. I mean, here's the thing. like It's a work of adaptation. yeah Like, this movie is about something that is... probably maybe not even really present in the Odyssey. I read the Odyssey in college. i you know,
Speaker: didn't memorize it i don't have like a a great recall of of the odyssey It's one of those things. It's a book of stories. and adventure and fantasy and magic.
Speaker: And it's because it's thousands of years old, people, because it's thousands of years old, people ascribe this like totemic status to it. When... Like anything else, when you adapt something into another medium, you're making your you're making your own story out of it. Exactly.
Speaker: There are lots of things that are in the Odyssey that are not in this movie. And yeah the primary theme of what this movie is about, which is kind of a surprise and the best part of the movie. is like that's the whole point like You don't need to adapt things if you're not going to say something different with it. That's thats what adaptation is for.
Speaker: Like if you were going to make a. word for word recreation of the book. Like, first of all, what's the point of that? Because people can still read the book. You can read the book. You can get it on Audible.
Speaker: Unlike Elon Musk, and my guess is a lot of the other... Let's be honest men who are, you know, up in arms on the internet about this.
Speaker: Like. They just... want like first of all it's i i feel like there's a white supremacist angle to it because like yeah it is this western tradition like the return guys on the internet who are obsessed with ancient greece and rome and stuff like that because it's like god you know,
Speaker: because it's when men were men Yeah, it's and it's very specifically like, you know, the Western civilization thing is a very like white supremacist kind of um rallying point for whatever reason.
Speaker: Yeah. um Are they going to do aqueducts next? Like, what else are... Yeah. It's very what strange. but What else did the Romans give us?
Speaker: I would, um yeah, I would really recommend seeing it. It's not like a perfect movie and I'm not, as as is on the record of this podcast, I am not the biggest Christopher Nolan fan in the world. Yeah. um I think this movie is really successful in a lot of ways. um Oh, that's good. I've heard really good things very about it.
Speaker: Big and loud. Yeah. I mean, as it should be, because it's... The Odyssey. I remember I read the Odyssey in high school. We did the Odyssey in the Iliad. um And. I remember.
Speaker: weirdly being surprised how how much I enjoyed it because It is just like fun stories. And I didn't think that was possible in like a historic text.
Speaker: It was the first time I realized. Oh. I guess. No matter what time. of the world. You could just have some silly fun. Fantasy stories.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah. And what's interesting is that like, I wonder because like, every time there's a movie this big, there's the copycats that come out, right? Like, yeah, yeah. yeah um When Gladiator you know, came out, they did. um alexander They did Troy, which is also the other thing that all the, all the, all the chuds on the internet are talking about is like, like a real good movie about ancient Greece, like Troy and like.
Speaker: Troy is a terrible movie. did did Have you seen Troy? I have seen Troy. I remember really liking it. As a 12 -year -old. Is beautiful in it. Oh, he's absolutely gorgeous. And that's why I loved it it. That's about all it has going for it. That is a yeah bad movie.
Speaker: I remember being just. Very disappointed in the lack of backstory that we got on Helen and what's his name? His relationship. They were just sort of like.
Speaker: her Helen and Paris. They were just like, because the whole situation is because of them. And. I just remember it just really falling flat. And I was like, but like. But like did they know what they're doing?
Speaker: But, like, can we get there? Well, I mean, part of the whole story of the Iliad, now that's the Iliad, obviously, part of the whole story of the Iliad is that we don't really know. Right. If she loved him or if she was kidnapped or. Yeah. um or if it's all just and then like in In this movie, and I think... in general, in terms of the, you know, quotation marks, history, because, you know, yeah probably all mythological in the first place i was like in terms of like i don't know is it real
Speaker: Well, no, no, I know. We know that like you know the characters aren't real, but you know yeah they I think that that there's a lot of debate about whether Troy was real at all. If Troy was even a real place. I know that. Relatively recently, they uncovered some ruins and they're like, I think this is Troy, but...
Speaker: It's all like, it's so long ago. It's so long ago. Guys, it was a long -ass fucking time ago. And here's the thing. The Odyssey. you know what's in the odyssey if we're gonna be like really super specific about it needs to be exactly like how it looked in ancient Peace!
Speaker: um There's mermaids. There's sirens! yeah And witches. There's all kinds of monsters. And a cyclops. Guys, a fucking Cyclops. Bill Irwin plays a Cyclops? It's so fucking cool. I'm really excited. I really want to see it. I asked Charlie because I.
Speaker: When it came out, my friend Robert saw it and he was obsessed. He loved it. um My friend Kelsey saw it. She said she was not as impressed, but it's because. Christopher Nolan fails women left and right in terms of - Oh, that's kind of his whole thing.
Speaker: I think Anne Hathaway is excellent in this. It is, um ah it's it's it's one of those things, like all the Christopher Nolan movies, the women are dead. Or like an an object. And Anne Hathaway, like then the character of Penelope is...
Speaker: Famously. Someone who's waiting. That's her whole deal. Honestly, I should i should really recommend. Do I have this handy? um yeah is there a book From her POV. Margaret Atwood's The Penelope Ad.
Speaker: AHHHHHH which is about um it's the odyssey from penelope's point of view and it is i love that it's great Yeah. Yeah. I recommend it. I love that.
Speaker: but it's um But she really puts a lot of, I mean, she's Anne Hathaway. She's one of our finest actors. Exactly. She puts a a lot into it. um Yeah. And then, you know, there's Calypso and Cersei, the other women in the story, who have, I mean.
Speaker: Samantha Morton of Searcy is really incredible. i've heard Samantha for Morton and John Leguizamo, I'm calling Oscar nominations for both of them. John Leguizamo's in this? John Leguizamo steals the fucking show. Who is he in this?
Speaker: He is... um he's a I can't think of his name. All the names are are hard to remember. They're all the same, yeah. It's like Alon or something like that. It's a lot of vowels. He is like Odysseus. Agamemnon? Agamemnon?
Speaker: No, Agamemnon's a whole other thing. You've got to watch the movie. We'll talk about it. Okay, okay. Agamemnon is great. um ah But no, um he is Eulon or something like that.
Speaker: He is Odysseus' is like main servant who is waiting with with Penelope and Telemachus and is like you know takes under his wing and he's blind and he's old and he's the one who... like stays.
Speaker: true to Odysseus while he's gone and is the one who like help yeah and the dog and he like helps when Odysseus comes back and is disguised and he's yeah John Leguizamo rules in this movie yeah okay okay well I'm excited to see it um Excited to see it. My favorite that I've seen is.
Speaker: um how much fun the actors had in terms of like their characterizations of these like watching interviews because Robert Pattinson really convinced himself that he was a good guy. He was doing the right thing. It's what you got to do. Yeah. Yeah. He plays such a like.
Speaker: God, Robert Pattinson's so good. he is He's so fucking good. He's so handsome, and he but he plays such an ugly little weasel in this movie. It must be so much fun for him to be able to do.
Speaker: all the different stuff that he's able to do while also being one of the biggest actors in the world. Yeah, exactly. While also being Edward, um, hold on tight spider monkey. Yes. And then I've watched Matt Damon. um who famously is terrible at pitching.
Speaker: um And in an interview, he was asked to pitch the movie. He was like, I don't know. It's about this guy. Nimodisius. And... He goes on a little journey. And then he's got a wife.
Speaker: She's at home. And she weaves. She do be weaving, yeah. She do be weaving. Anyways, um ancient Greece. famously featured in today's film. um Yeah. that That's right, guys. You guessed it. This is Go Get Your Girl.
Speaker: This is the podcast.
Speaker: You can kill me if you want. Okay, we're Emma's sister, Katie. And Emma have a beautiful relationship. A beautiful, beautiful relationship. um They're best friends. um Not quite twins, although at times you might think. that they were twins um she's a few years older than her i think yeah it I can't tell what...
Speaker: Little children's ages. Um... She calls her her little sister several times. Yeah. Yeah. It's just like at times they were like the same height and I was like, oh, they're twins. That's why their relationship is so close. No. um You're my little sister. And, um... Yeah. Katie, Katie's got cancer. And so. Oh, Katie has cystic fibrosis. Come on. Sorry. Cystic fibrosis. Sorry. I watched this a few days ago. I knew it was a.
Speaker: an illness. um Katie's got cystic fibrosis and Katie basically stays at home all the time, doesn't go to school, but Emma goes to school. And they they have a dance to, you know, to Robbins.
Speaker: um dancing on my own. Um... And. i Then they both grow up and Emma lives of a beautiful, flourishing life while Katie stays at home living vicariously through her. And we.
Speaker: Leave voicemails for each other because, um well, I call you every day because I miss you because I want to be a culinary masterpiece of an artist. um That's a long -winded way of saying a chef. Ah!
Speaker: And so and that's all because of Top Chef that we watched together when um I would stay home and you were sick. And so I go to San Francisco. to become a um ah chef, and I work under Nick Offerman, who's...
Speaker: Weirdly obsessed with kumquats. And I'm the kumquat girl. And I, then you die. And I'm real sad about it. Because obviously I'm sad about it. And, uh...
Speaker: I get really drunk and I call you one night and I leave you a voicemail about how much I miss you. But little unbeknownst to me. Your number has been already sold off by big cell phone.
Speaker: And then a romantic comedy ensues. And then a romantic comedy ensues. And yes, there are major references to Magic the Gathering, to which Charlie was so fucking excited about. but say I'm sure he pogged so hard when the guy mentioned Magic the Gathering. yeah He made us pause the movie, Katie.
Speaker: If you could just pause the movie. And then spent. Five to ten minutes explaining the importance of said card. And it's retail value today.
Speaker: and like i mean well i've got some made today i i've got some some i i can talk about that when we get to it as well yeah yeah um but yeah that's right guys i'm emma and i'm katie and today we are talking about voicemails for isabel from 2026 a netflix original written yeah did by Leah McKendrick.
Speaker: The also who's also in the movie as the character with the unlikely name of Brida. Yeah. Where was Brita? Was Brita the... Bride.
Speaker: The bride? Yeah, who marries Harry Shum Jr. AHHHHH Oh, okay. Yeah. I was like the bride. Who is the bride? That's the writer director.
Speaker: So Liam McKendrick made a movie called Scrambled. Which... Based on the poster. And the synopsis, which says very little, I think it's about a woman selling her eggs, but that's that's all I got. Okay.
Speaker: and some other and she's written a bunch of stuff which nobody's seen and um but this is like her i guess this is her first like You know, big be a movie with a big release. Yeah. And it's. Peace.
Speaker: This stars Zoe Deutsch, who we love. We love the Deutsch. Yeah. from um set it up And Nick Robinson, who I didn't know, but is apparently Simon.
Speaker: He's Simon and loves Simon. oh yeah Okay. um ah And the movie starts with dancing on my own, as many rom -coms do nowadays. You know, as you have to. ah It's a great song. that About.
Speaker: It's an LGBT anthem. the Heavy on the owl. I don't know if it's if it's an LGBT anthem. I mean, I guess all of Robin's songs are are gay anthems because it's like dance music. But like, you know, Robin isn't gay.
Speaker: She's not? No, she's just Swedish. I thought the thong was about her. She's just Swedish. I thought this was short hair. This song was about her at a club seeing another girl dancing with a guy and being like, oh.
Speaker: I guess I can't think on my own. No, no, it's a, it's a bad boy. She's, she's straight. Yeah. Oh, I thought it was, I've always thought it was about ladies. wow can i Honestly, you should keep thinking that. Just keep that in your head. yeah I'm going to keep that in my head. It's about ladies. Peace.
Speaker: Uh... um It's 2010, which is the year that Dancing on My Own came out. Yeah. And did it make you feel um like a dinosaur?
Speaker: well When this started? the I don't know. what they're They're making her her a lot younger than she actually is for some reason. Yeah, I don't understand. She's in her 30s and it she like she looks like she's about 10 in 2010, which I guess yeah they want her to be 25 in this movie. I don't know why. because rom -com canon um i but like so watching a couple of children
Speaker: dancing around and dancing on my own while I was in college. And then like later on when they're in high school, I was a full fledged adult. Made me feel like a dinosaur.
Speaker: Yeah, so it's these two children who um love each other very much. It's a very idyllic childhood, despite one of them being um very sick, obviously. Very, very sick. um They do a coordinated.
Speaker: thing yeah or know um a cannula yeah um yeah There's this bit where she kisses a boy and she runs home to tell her sister about it. And then the next day he's making fun of her. And he says, does your sister taste like cancer? Which is. Yeah. Crazy. And she beats him up.
Speaker: yeah Which is where we learn. Again. We learned that she does not have cancer. She has cystic fibrosis, which is like not a death sentence. Like people live to be, to full lives with cystic fibrosis. So it's, um you know, she has a very bad case that, that kills her when she's.
Speaker: In her early 20s, it seems. Yeah. um Then we see, oh yeah, they do a coordinated dance to Dancing on My Own where. her She is at school. um and hears it and Isabella's at home and they do this dance number even though they're not together physically it's very cute it's so cute um but here's my question okay this leads me to my first question because like I was in I watched this movie and then I was just like oh it was so good I felt so many emotions it is the um In.
Speaker: Continuing the trend of films in 2026 that... Well... lead you to believe that they're lighthearted romps, but really will destroy the fuck out of you. a I had a bit of a mixed reaction to this movie, but we'll get into it.
Speaker: um So my questions, but then I thought about it and then I was just like, wait. There's so many plot holes. Hold on. Does Isabelle go to school? Is she homeschooled? What is the situation there? Like, we don't know does she... Because like she lives a very sheltered life if she never leaves the house for all of her life.
Speaker: like That is definitely what it what it lets us leads us to believe, that she never leaves the house, really. Yeah, but they but they had a ah college fund for her. yeah Making us believe that like maybe she would get better and go to college.
Speaker: But maybe that was just made in like good faith. Like, yeah. Cystic fibrosis is a lung disease where your lungs fill up with fluid basically, and you can't breathe. And I think it affects other organs as well. um Yeah.
Speaker: but it so it's it I think it must vary based on the case. like Some people have it worse than others, obviously. Yeah. um So I think it's probably just like, I don't know if she can, like, she might not be able to go to school. She might not have the breath, you know, to to like walk around and stuff.
Speaker: Well, and then I was just like, if she was homeschooled and never left the house. She was very well adjusted for someone that was a homeschool kid. Like, listen very well adjusted.
Speaker: Almost all of the homeschool people that I've ever known, save one, Who will be who hint, ah they um you know, spoiler will be our guest on our next episode. yeah My friend Gia is the most normal homeschool kid I've ever met. um And I think there's a lot of different reasons for that. which maybe we could talk about that on that episode. um Yeah. yeah but because Yeah. She should have been a little bit weirder.
Speaker: yeah My thoughts? I mean, she's pretty weird, honestly. But, like, at the same time, she's not. She's like, I don't know. She's she's just... I just I felt like she would be a little bit more awkward.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah um ah It's... ah Oh, I... um Do I have this thing? Oh, yeah, yeah. that The thing that they do that's so adorable is they call each other ah boy... nicknames.
Speaker: They call each other brother and dude and guy and lad. And they always refer to the other one as my brother instead of my sister. And I don't know why. I just think that's so cute. yeah It was very adorable.
Speaker: um Yeah, it's 2026. Jill, ah who is... um um Zoe Deutsch is... um In San Francisco, ah she's a prep cook for Nick Offerman, who is playing a...
Speaker: pretentious, famous chef. who works at a restaurant called Flanet. yeah which I think it's the bakery. It's... Um, maybe it is a big I'm pretty sure it's just a bakery because they just do dessert.
Speaker: Yeah. From what I gather. Flané is a French word that means to wander aimlessly, like to just like... have a Have a walk down the Seine, you know, as to Flanet. Oh, I wish we had that. Les flaneurs, the people who just, you know, wander around the the the Paris, you know.
Speaker: basking in its beauty. Ugh. my drink She's slicing kumquats. which is what she does all day, which is again. Like... Being a chef fucking sucks it fucking sucks it fucking sucks like a lot of this i was just like yeah okay i see i see because now that the bear
Speaker: Has been... put into our pop cultural lexicon and the menu, um, the world knows how much it sucks to be a chef and it's got all their little code words like, yes, chef.
Speaker: Yeah. um Although she doesn't say corner, which they make a couple references to, which is her fault. Like, if she's not saying behind you... Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. If she's not saying behind you or corner, then honestly, that's on her.
Speaker: Yeah. you like smashed on your... Chef coat. Yeah, there's... um The logline of this movie gives it away, I should also say. i Yeah.
Speaker: Because the the the logline of the movie is like... She leaves voicemails for her dead sister and the sister doesn't die for like 15 minutes. So it's kind of. I didn't see that.
Speaker: Yeah, oh, that's good. Good for you. Like I wish I hadn't yeah yeah so the whole her sister died i mean like you could sense that it was gonna happen But it still destroyed me. It's called voicemails for Isabel. And she's talking to Isabel on the phone a lot in the first movie. So you're like, I wonder why she's going to start leaving voicemails. Right. And I was just like, maybe her sister's like the.
Speaker: Like. The positive part of me, the optimistic part of me was just like, well, maybe she's leaving voicemails for her sister, her weird sister who lives at home. um And then you just you could sense that it was coming and you knew that it was coming.
Speaker: And there she was, and she dies, and I... I cried so much. You sent me a picture, yeah. Emma loves to send me a picture of herself after she's cried.
Speaker: After I'm weeping. I did it after Hail Mary. I didn't do it after um Sheep Detectives. I should have done it for Sheep Detectives. i yeah we I also saw Sheep Detectives um recently.
Speaker: Yeah, how was that? It's great. It's so good. Yeah, it's so good. It's a delight. Yeah. Did did you cry? I did cry. Yes, I cried a couple of times. I i cried a lot in that movie.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah. My little winter lamb. the Winter lamb. I love him. So we're gonna this is when we get to the point of things that started to annoy me in this movie. Okay. um And it's the...
Speaker: References to... media that we're that that it wants the audience to attach to. Gotcha. I don't know if it's the mood I was in, but like they they say, if I'm a bird, you're a bird.
Speaker: yeah And that one didn't bother me as much as some of the other ones. There's a lot of references to like. the Millennial and Gen Z rom -com canon.
Speaker: Yeah, there's it the Taylor Swift thing. We'll get there. The Taylor Swift thing is what really is like. oh Come on, guys. Like... I felt pandered to. I felt like. i condescended a little bit. It's like, hey, you idiots, you like Taylor Swift, don't you? If it's for the millennial rom -com girlies, why can't we make Zoe Deutsch be her actual age?
Speaker: A hundred percent. A hundred percent. And also like. Like that detached me. You've got. You've got to create something new. You can't yeah borrow emotion and nostalgia for other things.
Speaker: Constantly. create something like the things that like them like the thing with like them calling each other boys names them calling each other my brother That is original to this movie. And that's the thing I'm going to remember about this a year from now.
Speaker: is... You know, my brother, Isabel. Have you seen her? um It's... Aww. That is what I will remember. And the the the the the parts where they're trying to evoke nostalgia and...
Speaker: borrow feelings from other. let's let's be honest, better movies is just such. a Netflix streaming thing. Like it's such a, it's a. it's a poison that's in the water of all of these streaming rom -coms. um yeah And it's, it's really annoying.
Speaker: Yeah, but here's the thing. I fall for it every time. listen they got me at the end but we'll get there Yeah. Oh, did you cry? Did you cry? Oh, I cried. I definitely cried, yeah. um I didn't cry here. I cried at the end. Okay. I cried here and then I cried again at the end.
Speaker: Yeah. She's dead. Um, not now. Which is the note that I wrote. It just says she's dead. She's dead. She's D -E -A -D with a capital D.
Speaker: Yeah, she runs back to Austin. So there's a lot of this movie takes place between San Francisco and Austin, which is really Vancouver. Yeah, well, and here's the first of every... as f - fun facts, Emma's fun facts. They only spent three days in San Francisco filming. Everything else was done.
Speaker: Yeah, that makes sense. um Vancouver. At Golden Gate Park and at the... But, um... marina or whatever the the landmarks yeah you gotta hit yeah the landmarks Which...
Speaker: We saw the zigzag road from what's up doc. it is it's the zigzag road for once oh yeah they did the tour they the tour buses the other day i'm sure yeah yeah The tour buses the other day. And, um, but like.
Speaker: it just, they spent three days. They put all their eggs in San Francisco basket, which. Fine. 75 % of the film takes place in San Francisco. It felt like they didn't even try with Austin. And so I texted my friend Kelsey. I was just like, Kelsey, who is from Austin. I was like.
Speaker: You need to watch this movie and you need to give me your corrections on the Austen -ness of it all. Which, yes, okay, I get it. People from Texas, we like breakfast burritos. They're great. Have you had a breakfast burrito? We like tacos. Yes. They're great. You ever had a taco?
Speaker: They have them everywhere. They have breakfast burritos in San Francisco. I guarantee it. Yeah, but you don't understand. It's like a whole culture. and I know, but did you feel pandered to about it? like is that the same yeah I I felt a little panicked too.
Speaker: This movie is doing that, yeah. Yeah. And like, it just doesn't like look like Austin, like all of the shots that they do, like of Austin, like even when she's like. out on 6th Street, like, for the, um...
Speaker: new year's eve i was just like none of this looks like austin so if you're gonna put it in a city Put it in a city that like makes sense that you can like make it look like it. Or shoot there. Like I'm sure they didn't. they probably I'm sure they didn't just didn't have the money to to do another location. Austin has amazing film credits for when you shoot there.
Speaker: Listen, I don't know. I don't know the story of the finances of this movie. but Um... So he has a girlfriend who sucks. She is dating people who suck. She dates one of her co -prep chefs who, while they're having sex, keeps going, tell me everything is okay, which is so funny.
Speaker: It's so funny. It's the guy from White Lotus. They're so stressed out. Yeah. He's from Hawaii. White Lotus. Oh, I didn't recognize him. He's from White Lotus season one. And he's also the one that went viral um during COVID because he had an audition.
Speaker: And um he had a Zoom callback. with the director and the director forgot to mute themselves and they started talking shit about his apartment and why they were like we can't hire this guy i mean like look at his shitty apartment Oh, I remember that amount i yeah that that. He's that guy. Nice. Good for him. yeah I hope this movie allowed him to get a better apartment. um Me too. He tells her, you used me like a human dildo. Yeah.
Speaker: but There's another thing that that bothered me. There's a lot of like making fun of like current relationship language in this movie where.
Speaker: The movie is kind of like. Isn't it ridiculous that people care about people's feelings now? Isn't that kind of silly? Oh, this is so weird. yeah So silly. It's a very kind of this is the kind of weird conservative thing that I. i rub me the wrong way um He is. is a millionaire. Yeah, he does real estate.
Speaker: He's a real estate tycoon. He has a mansion with a big pool, um which is never right brought up really. like um Central Austin, which is so expensive.
Speaker: I think I went off on like a tangent to Charlie when we were watching this, like on the other New Year's scene where I was just like. My dude. It was... ah It is a mansion with a pool in central Austin. Do you know how expensive that is? Is he renting?
Speaker: Does he own it? Like, is he does he sell, like, entire, like... commercial buildings i thought that that commercial real estate was like dead after 2020 We know that he commits crimes. We know that he's got a guy in the office who has who's been hacking people's information to try to give him leads on real estate, which is a...
Speaker: I don't know if it's a federal crime but it's a major crime. ah Yeah. Yeah. And we don't really go into that. We don't really go into that. We're supposed to like this guy and it's hard to like this guy a little bit. I did find it hard to difficult to. to like him in certain points.
Speaker: Yes. Yeah. So he's got a cell phone. He's got a new work cell phone. And he's getting the voicemails that she's leaving for Isabel. And he starts listening to them.
Speaker: And at one point, he text he's about to text her and be like, hey, you've got the wrong number. But then he gets interrupted. And it's pretty much hand -waved after that. Yeah. And then he just he just really enjoys living vicariously through Jill and Isabel. Well, I guess mostly Jill. Isabel is not. living anymore he's harmed by their relationship like she leaves these really charming um you know, monologues on on the voicemail, and he kind of...
Speaker: you know, falls in love with her based on. yeah How? how cool she is. And he starts to stalk her. Like a stalker. he immediately the movie i mean and again there's another thing this movie is borrowing stuff from you've got mail which yeah Listeners to this podcast know. I have a lot of problems with You've Got Mail. Yeah, but here's my thing. i I like Tom Hanks a little bit more. I would have totally like just bought it from Tom Hanks.
Speaker: Well, I mean, as they say in this movie, this guy is not Tom Hanks. He's not Tom Hanks. They scream, him you're not Tom Hanks at him. And he's not. yeah He's cute. He is cute. He's got some good lips.
Speaker: Bye. um He's not Tom Hanks. um No. He's got creeper vibes. There's a daddy's home needle drop when she starts hooking up with this podcaster who ends up ghosting her. My vagina is a secret garden.
Speaker: Amen. He, yeah, he's stalking her Instagram. um ah And then we meet Harry Shum Jr. and Leah McKendrick, who is the writer -director.
Speaker: Yes, um they are getting married. ah They are his best friends. His name is Wes. And he's the best man and he has to write a best man speech. This is when he finds out that Isabelle that He tells them about the voicemails for Isabel, and this is when he finds out that she's dead.
Speaker: um because he didn't know she was dead until about now. Yeah. Um... She crashes the live podcast taping of the douchebag relationship podcaster who ghosts her. And he.
Speaker: Flies to West. flies to San Francisco, To stalk her more. He goes to this podcast thing to watch her humiliate this guy. Yeah. Which.
Speaker: Here's another thing. like She has this big monologue about him and all the women applaud when she leaves. And I'm like, not in any world. Not in any world. Not in any world. If she did that.
Speaker: Those women would turn on her so quickly. Like the cult of celebrity is stronger than the the yeah the sisterhood of women. I'm sorry. Yep. That is fact. That is fact, unfortunately. And it's been proven time and time again.
Speaker: Um... I mean look at all the girlies going after Woody Allen. She calls him ah Hugh Cant. You can't. Oh yeah.
Speaker: Because he's English, you see. Yeah. The podcast. I wrote, Wes goes after her like a crazy person. Yeah. And then she sits at a bench at Golden Gate Park like she wants to get killed by the fucking Zodiac. Yeah, and then he comes up like the fucking Zodiac. No, no, wait, wait, wait, wait.
Speaker: She leaves a voicemail for Isabel saying. I just want some guy to come sit next to me on the bench at Golden Gate Park and like, then we'll start talking and then I'll fall in love with him. And so he does it.
Speaker: Just like you've got mail. He is using information that he got from the voicemails. to seduce her. yeah Which is fraud. like it's yeah It's the same thing as he's been doing with the real estate people.
Speaker: it It feels a lot more toxic in this movie than in You've Got Mail to me. I disagree. I think they're both pretty toxic. I think it's because, and I'm i'm going to go out on a limb here. Um.
Speaker: We as a society have moved past the fact of allowing men to think that stalking love is okay. Yeah, yeah. And in the 90s - Well, clearly not.
Speaker: uh we we didn't know that as much and it was a little bit harder um now If he wanted to, he could get her social security number. He could kidnap her And, ah or no, just kidding. He could create an AI version of her.
Speaker: Like that's way creepier. He's got a lot of information about her. That's way creepier. Like the amount of information that he can get now from stalking versus like in the 90s with dial up and like just using these like letters to be like, you like Pride and Prejudice. I like Pride and Prejudice. Now he's just like, I know exactly what your favorite color, where you grew up and everything about you ever.
Speaker: yeah Like that's, it just feels a little bit more creepy. to me. um He teach almost tells her the truth again, but then can't because he sucks. um She says that she's closed for business. She's on. um She's boy sober. Yep. um ah She's. um What is the other thing that she says? She's a I don't think I wrote it down. There's another one that she uses to describe that she's off men.
Speaker: Um... She said she tried to sell feet pics online, but someone said her toes look like little fingers. ah Yeah! I thought that was very funny. But but but she he's like, I'm going to be in in here for work. And I guess he claims that he is there for work later. So that is, kind I don't know if we met think he met they deleted a scene or something where he actually does have to go to San Francisco.
Speaker: Well, in the beginning, he says um he makes a call and he says, hey. You know that that. um He was like, hey, can I do some work out of the San Francisco office or do some something in the San Francisco office or do that thing in San Francisco that you guys mentioned? Don't worry about it. He does it intentionally to get there for her though. Exactly. He uses, he.
Speaker: tells his work he wants to go to San Francisco and do their work in the San Francisco office. He's creating serendipity for himself. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. So it's not like he just got onto a plane.
Speaker: just going to see Jill, but he did. Yeah, he did. um ah They talk about breakfast tacos because, you know, they're both from Austin. Breakfast tacos are great. um ah Sure, whatever. You know what's even better than a breakfast taco? Breakfast taquito. You ever had a breakfast taquito?
Speaker: No, I've never even, I don't, I'm not a big breakfast person. um Well, they're a lot of burger. They didn't even mention what Burger. I even mentioned Whataburger. Cookies! Like - You're not in Austin.
Speaker: What's wrong with this? Movie. Sorry. um there's a, I mean, um, ah ah Breakfast burritos. I like a breakfast burrito sometimes. It depends. Well, you can only get breakfast taquitos from Whataburger. And you can only get them on their breakfast menu. And they're delicious. And they're fabulous. And I love them.
Speaker: Are they vegetarian? They have an egg option. Okay. So he... She, like, talks about he's got a dead mom. um She talks yeah to to him. She's like, what was your mom's specialty? And he's like, cornbread chicken pot pie. That was my mom's recipe.
Speaker: But I don't know how she made it. So that's, you know, Chekhov's cornbread chicken pot pie, which they they follow up on immediately. like yeah Like literally just like five minutes later. Yep. She makes it. And he's like, this is it.
Speaker: Yeah. He says that he's there for, yeah. And another movie it'd be like, she would try different versions and eventually find it, but no, she nails it first time because she's a good chef. She's so talented. By being a girl.
Speaker: He says that she he's there for two weeks. he He wants her to show her around the city. And then there's this montage of her taking him to restaurants and flirting with her like crazy. But she says that they're not going to nothing's going to happen.
Speaker: Her job is terrible. Nick Offerman just humiliates all of them at every turn as much as possible. And and you learn it's because he came fourth in Top Chef. And so he feels.
Speaker: demasculated by his loss. And so he feels that he needs yeah to show his importance to his staff. I'm sure something that never happens to chefs ever. um Yeah, exactly. They go on a tour bus, ah the like a comedy ah tour bus in San Francisco. What kind of a tour bus? What kind of a tour is that? It seems terrible. Um, the guy yeah his bo is not known for its comedy.
Speaker: No. um The guy gets nervous and runs away. So Wes tries to take over before the bus driver kicks him out, which yeah she she should have done. He says nothing funny in there in his little. tirade there.
Speaker: Yep. And. ah they Then he starts singing, I left my heart in San Francisco, which everybody on the bus knows the words to, which like, I don't know the words to. I left my heart in San Francisco. And these are not San Franciscans. They're tourists. So why would they know the words? I think you'll find, and you should remember from the Princess Diaries. Uh, Katie. Ah, it is friends and...
Speaker: San Francisen. Um, so sorry. San Francisen. Um... That's rough. San Franciscan is rough. um It's like ah new people from New Zealand are just called. New Zealand. It's not New Zealander. It's... New Zealand actor.
Speaker: um That's so... Samara Weaving. It is. it' said It's odd. yeah Because, I mean, they call themselves Kiwi. So like, yeah you know, Kiwi actor, Samara Weaving, like. That makes sense. Actually, I think she might. I think she might be Australian. I guess she is. I and want to correct you, but I.
Speaker: She's Australian. Kiwi director. um um Peter Jackson. Peter Jackson, yeah. There you go. ah Yes. um So she says she thinks she she learned to cook with her sister because she was home all the time and they just tried a bunch of stuff. And she thinks she's dead inside because she spent so much of her life living for her sister.
Speaker: She makes the cornbread chicken pot pie like his mom's and he's - Go. And he's lying to her. Yeah. and I also wrote this movie.
Speaker: Sorry, that was my water bottle. I also wrote this movie can't go five minutes without a needle drop. um like What do you mean? Like constant songs playing. Oh, yeah. It was just basically like one long music video, which is like how I like my rom -coms, to be honest. It's how I like my rom -coms. I don't know. I found it irritating. um I mean, he's but at least. They played? They succeeded where Look Both Ways failed.
Speaker: which is they were able to have a song multiple times in a movie. without us getting annoyed as hell by it. That's true. That's true. Well, they they tie it emotionally is what they do. Yes. Yeah, which they did not do in Look Both Ways.
Speaker: No, Look Both Ways is not a good movie. um ah ah He's about to fuck her on the kitchen counter, which is pretty hot. It's pretty hot. Because of his mom's... Cornbread. Yeah.
Speaker: It's immediately hard. He's a but she they they stop ah from having sex and he's about to tell her and he tells her but she's already fallen asleep.
Speaker: Classic. Yep. Classic. As they're watching Top Chef. Yes. um ah He sleeps on the couch. She wakes up and goes to spoon him. She says that dessert tacos are her specialty, which my immediate response is...
Speaker: Gross. Um... Come here! had a dessert taco? No, I've never had a dessert taco. I've never been to Texas. Good. It's a little waffle cone. You put some ice cream in there and then you get a little toppings. It's like it's like a little ice cream sandwich, but like it's a taco.
Speaker: It seems messy and gross. Um... Then he talks about Magic the Gathering, um which is his thing that he's into. And tell us about what Charlie said about Magic the Gallery. Okay.
Speaker: was the moment in the movie where charlie goes yes and then he has to pause the movie um because he's talking about like what he's working for because she's working for she wants to be a really great chef she wants to make amazing breakfast or dessert tacos yeah and she goes so what's like your dream He talks about. He has all of the power nine. Now...
Speaker: Astute listeners of this podcast will know that I want, even though I... you know, do not care about Magic the Gathering in real life. I did work at a Magic the Gathering store once. So you were very familiar.
Speaker: And I've played the game. It's a fun game. It's a very, very well -designed fun game, but it is also a, um it's a, it's a, it's an evil in the world, I think, because it's just designed to take nerds money.
Speaker: God. Ha - My husband has spent so much fucking money on Magic the Gathering cards and Magic the Gathering accessories, I shall say. Oh, no. he has all the puzzle accessories i know he has organizational boxes Um, every time he goes because on Fridays, which like.
Speaker: I don't want to shoot a... Gift horse in the mouth. um Is that the phrase? and It's look a gift horse in the mouth, but I think that's actually more evocative, Emma. I like let's not shoot a gift horse in the mouth.
Speaker: Um... But because every Friday he goes to his local comic book store and he plays magic. Friday Night Magic. It's nationwide. yeah He plays Magic the Gathering on Friday nights. And so Emma gets to come home from work.
Speaker: Sit on the couch with a glass of wine. on Is the gift horse him not being home, Emma? Yes! Oh, no. You have to understand Katie. He works from home. He's always home. I get that. He's always home.
Speaker: you need He's always home. He does have a car now. I mean, he can drive now. He can drive. But, like... He is always home. Always. I get that. and get there And so like, this is like. my few hours once a week that I get to be in the house.
Speaker: watching TV on the couch. what watching whatever I want. I can do whatever I want. Doing my puzzles. I think last time I spent a good hour listening to my audiobook with a glass of wine, putting together my puzzle.
Speaker: Like, it was a good time. yeah It was really good. Have you ever tried to do a puzzle on edibles? Let me tell you, it doesn't work out that well. i i don't I couldn't tell you the last time I did a puzzle at all.
Speaker: Killa. Caitlin and I did one of those, like Caitlin's mom bought us one of those like mystery box things once. And we did that. That's the closest thing to a puzzle where like you have to solve like.
Speaker: codes and stuff. it's like an escape room kind of That's nice. I, I, at one point I took an edible and then I was like, I'm going to do some of my puzzle. And then the next morning I came down and I was like, well, this is all wrong. Haha!
Speaker: Yeah, that makes sense. Makes sense. um So the power nine are nine cards from, ah I believe they're all from. alpha they may not all be from the first set but they are overpowered cards that were banned in tournament play and are now super super rare and worth a lot of money and by worth a lot of money i'm talking about tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Speaker: Lots of them. Very. openpi Very expensive. i So the card he needs is the Black Lotus, which is the most expensive card in Magic. I've touched one before. i wanted to Oh.
Speaker: Cause I worked at this store and we mostly, I worked at star city games, which. is still an absolutely huge company. um It's mostly online. We mostly sold cards to... comic book stores and like hobby stores all over the world like Yeah, a call would come in from we get an order from Germany for like, you know, 400 cards. And yeah like, I would just go and get them. That was my job.
Speaker: the the really The really expensive cards were kept in a big safe. He had to put on cotton gloves to get them. They're kept in those um in the frame. like He has it. yeah He has got that hard frame that that's kept in. yeah um And yeah, I touched a Black Lotus once um to sell it. We sold it for... It wasn't as good a quality as the one that that that he has. I don't remember what it was graded or anything, but we it was sold for like, we sold it for like.
Speaker: You know, something like $30 ,000, like the cost of a car. Yeah. this is And we sold it to a comic book shop who I'm sure just wanted it to be like. I'm just gonna have. Yeah. yeah Like.
Speaker: Ta - That is a moment where I'm just like, oh, money's just pretend. Money is just pretend. Like it has no value. It's all what someone's willing to pay for something. Yeah. Exactly. Jesus fucking Christ.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So yeah, that from that moment on, Charlie was very invested in the film. Yeah. um So he he asked her to go to the wedding with him in Austin. And she agrees. But he's still lying. And this is when his friends find out that he didn't tell her about the voicemails. And they yell at him.
Speaker: Harry Shum slaps him, as he should. yeah As he should. He swears to tell her. Yeah, he swears to tell her and then I wrote He is really handsome, though. Yeah. Yeah. So.
Speaker: I'm not immune to the charms of the movie. yeah Yeah. ah the The wedding reception, we immediately cut to the wedding. The wedding reception is in a barn, which is required by law in Texas, I believe, right? Yeah, it looked exactly like... um Camp Lucy, which is where my friend Kelsey got married in Austin. A lot of shout outs to Kelsey in this one. Yeah, Kelsey, is she's like the most awesomeustin Austin person I've ever known.
Speaker: She's a, wait, this... This movie was a request, wasn't it? Didn't somebody tell us we had to do this? It was not by her. It was by Jen, which is Charlie's boss. Oh, that's right. Charlie's boss. Kelsey has not seen it. Kelsey has two children. One of... whose names is Theo and one of whom's names is Wolfgang.
Speaker: Shout out to Theo and Wolfgang. um Yeah. So he gives his speech, which she helped him with, um and talks about how Harry Shum Jr. and Liam McKendrick met by chance, yeah by total. um serendipity uh and he says sometimes life rigs things in our favor And then the line that she gave him, you made a believer out of me because he says that he didn't believe in love.
Speaker: Which I wanted to hear you made a Belieber out of me, but that didn't happen. No, that would be stupid. Um...
Speaker: She has his jacket on and she calls Isabel. Tell her about this wonderful wedding. But... his phone rings in her jacket and she realizes that he's been.
Speaker: Listening to all of her voicemails and using the information to get closer to her like a fucking serial killer. Yeah. And that freaks her out as it should, as it should any modern day woman. And she runs away as again, as she should.
Speaker: And he's trying to explain. um And she says, I don't need a man. I need my little sister back. And I'm like, that's not. That's not really the problem. Like, that's not what you should be mad at. It seems like you're mad because he's saying that he can replace your sister, which is not what he's saying. And it's not the violation. The violation. Is your privacy. Yes.
Speaker: But I think that that's where they try to undercut it. They try to undercut it there. Yeah.
Speaker: um Then a terrifying thing happens where her phone updates and she loses all of her voicemails. which It's so sad. I don't know why that would happen because yeah I, as an emotional person, I listen to old voicemails um and I have all of mine from over well over a decade ago and they've never. they've never deleted so yeah i I have several from my grandma that I keep on my phone just for when I want to hear her voice.
Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. Same thing with my with yeah dad. Yeah. Yeah. um Then ah she gets like a challenge at work. um Oh, oh, one of the guys gets fired a while ago. um And so they, the baker gets fired. cube A red cube. Yes. I think it was just a red hair. It's supposed to be his hair, yeah, because he has red hair. is Is in one of the cupcakes.
Speaker: Yes. um And so he gets fired. And then um so now they they they have a bake off a souffle bake off like on Top Chef. He gives a quick fire event. 25 minutes to make a souffle to... um show a to who's go Who's going to get the baker yeah part. ba So there's the three people. Which is really what Jill wants. She really wants the baker job.
Speaker: And she's a good picker. And so they make a souffle. She um thinks about her sister and has this moment of inspiration, which would absolutely win on Top Chef. Like yeah that is what they want on Top Chef.
Speaker: But here's the thing. Nick Offerman's character didn't win Top Chef. He's not that good of a chef. he yeah um And he she puts like pistachios and kumquats in it because the raspberry stuff gets spilled.
Speaker: Because she didn't say corner. um and then um he's like And then he openly mocks her in front of everyone. Yep. And ah gives the. gives it to thet to the to the man, and she's like, his souffle is raw. You barely tasted it.
Speaker: Um... And she's like, he's been sabotaging everyone. He's the one who put the hair in the souffle. He's the one who froze the butter from the... the the lesbian um chef who's there.
Speaker: Yep. who Also, I mean, like there's like this like very fierce competition between them. Like she tries to to help. And again, everyone makes fun of her. And the the other the the the other woman chef there is like. I didn't ask for your help. Fuck off. I didn't come here to make friends. Yeah. Chill.
Speaker: Um... So she has a breakdown. She calls him Team Gordon Ramsay. Which he is. as And then she later says, I went Jilly Maguire. And I'm like, yeah.
Speaker: i know right Call back. because she's like who's with she's yeah She's like, who's with me? And nobody goes with her. And nobody goes. And nobody goes. Who's with me? yeah Oh my God. And then her parents fly in because she's having a breakdown. It's her birthday. at night Oh, yeah. And it's her birthday. yeah She makes a disgusting little ice cream taco with a candle in it to to blow out. It's not disgusting. It's delicious.
Speaker: It's going to drip all over the place. it's that's why you eat it how do you eat it fucking ice cream sandwich, Katie! I don't. ah That's why you can't understand. I have been known to eat an ice cream sandwich and the answer is - Carefully. You put it in a fucking bowl. I don't want to get my hands sticky. Well, then meet her with a... Soon! An ice cream sandwich? You just, like...
Speaker: eat it with a th fork i don't know sure well i mean she and she she figures out the the answer to the question later on in the movie but we'll get there that's true Her parents give her a sign that she and her sister made that says Jill and Izzy's. And of course, that's what she's going to name her food truck. I could see this coming a mile away. Yeah. I love it. We don't come here for the plot twists.
Speaker: Long before they brought her the sign, I'm like, well, she's going to open up a food truck and serve her disgusting tacos. Um... Not disgusting. And then they give her a bunch of money, yeah ah and ah an undisclosed amount of money that was for Izzy's college fund. um And she.
Speaker: So she buys a truck. Yeah. Well, and first they give her the choice. They're like, yeah, you could totally. use this money, come home, you know. Go to...
Speaker: College or law school or whatever. Become an accountant is what they say. become an accountant You can you can totally do that or you can take this money and you could go crazy and you could do the most. unhinged thing ever. And you you could show them all. I think that's what he says. or so go them all Her dad is Gil Bellows.
Speaker: um ah who It took me forever. I'm like, who is that? He looks so familiar. He's the guy from Ally McBeal.
Speaker: No? Okay, he's in other stuff, but... Yeah. And do you know what Alan McNeil was? No. Yes, I know what Ally McBeal is. he was He started out as the male lead. he ended up like She ended up not getting together with him. She ended up with somebody else, I think. But um he is like the plot of that.
Speaker: of that show originally was that she goes to that law firm because she's in love with him. And I just know about the dancing baby and Jane Krakowski. Yes, Jane Krakowski was there. Robert Downey Jr. was there. yeah Yeah, lots of people. um But yes, his name is... Gil Bellows. Oh, okay.
Speaker: So she tries to start her her truck and it she's trying to make the tacos. and it's It's not working. And then she she smashes a tortilla and she's like. Dessert nachos. Because you you... You eat them with a fork and they're a lot cleaner than trying to eat an ice cream taco.
Speaker: Are you okay with dessert nachos? I think it's cleaner. I think it's, you can eat it with a fork. Yeah. Would would you order a dessert nacho? I don't know. I'm not a big ice cream fan, honestly.
Speaker: I mean, listen, listen, listen, I'll have some ice cream, but it's not like. I'm not like eating ice cream all the time, you know? okay all right she's judging me so hard like i know this is a visual medium but she's looking at me like i told her that i eat children like i don't understand how you cannot be an ice cream person Ice cream is universal?
Speaker: Ice cream is - is good. Like I, you know, I mean, I'm just going to turn down a pint of half baked, my favorite Ben and Jerry's flavor. There you go. But like... Ben and Jerry, sponsor us.
Speaker: I'm like, yeah, Ben and Jerry's sponsors. I'm also like. But I'm not, like, obsessed. Like, I... I mean, I'm not obsessed with ice cream, but, like, I'll go out for ice cream. I never have ice cream at the house is what I'm trying to say. Like, I never buy ice cream and keep it in the house.
Speaker: We always have. it Yeah. see But my husband's addicted. Yeah, it's more normal to be into that. What do you do when you want a little sweet treat? i really I honestly don't want a sweet treat that often. If I want a little treat, it's hot and spicy Cheez -Its.
Speaker: Or... you know, pimento cheese ah or, and like a nice baguette. Like it's savory snacks. I like salty and spicy stuff mostly. Yeah. What about hot honey? You ever had hot honey?
Speaker: I like hot honey. Yeah. Yeah. yeah A little bit of both. A little sweet, a little hot. Cool spacey? Pretty good pizza. She tries to get the Chaco truck going. ah Nobody shows up for a long time. A little girl and her dad shows up and she they order it.
Speaker: And then the power blows and she screams and scares the little kid. And the little girl says, I hate you. and then Yeah. You taught her how to hate, and that made me laugh.
Speaker: Then the lesbian from the restaurant shows up. Yep. And is like, I'm... competent and here to help you yeah and she's like every ah decision you have made thus far is stupid this location is stupid everything about this is stupid Let's fix this.
Speaker: They go to a place called Hippie Hill, which I guess is real. um I guess, in San Francisco. And this woman is singing ah ah that that Journey song about the lights going out. I think it's called... The lights light go out on the city. yeah Yeah.
Speaker: Yes. And which again, see like why journey? Like this seems very like, you know, 2008. Exactly. So there's... um They have a whole ah montage of the the people at the at the music festival coming and eating all of their dessert nachos. They become a big success because, of course. And then it's Christmas, and so...
Speaker: I got wrapped around the axle on the timeline in this movie. Because... Izzy died in November. Yes. It was just before Thanksgiving.
Speaker: Yes. Has only a month passed in this movie, or has a full year passed? I feel like it's gotta be a year. It's gotta be here. She he can't come to so also San Francisco would be. cold in the winter.
Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. I've never been. i think I think that it's like spring. when he goes to visit her because she's like, When she first finds out, because in the wedding has got to be in like May or June. Yes. yeah It's been a full year because she's like, because Isabel died. way back in November.
Speaker: Yeah. And then the rest of the summer, and then she and then she breaks up with him, and then the rest of the summer happens when she builds the truck. And then like, we know the truck is successful months later. It is Christmas. That's what happens. Yeah. Okay. Okay. That makes sense. That makes sense.
Speaker: I did not get wrapped around the axle on that because they very clearly told us where we were. where we Where you were, yes, yes, yes. Um, the ah The director comes to see him. um And he's heartbroken. He's in his pool in his mansion.
Speaker: Yeah. ah right Oh, the director. I was like, the director? this is This is earlier. They're not at the pool yet. It's not New Year's yet. It's still Christmas. um Yeah. She comes to see him somewhere and he's heartbroken. And um she tells him like, cause she follows, she met.
Speaker: Izzy, not Izzy, she met Jill at the um at the wedding and has follows her on Instagram and knows about the food truck and knows that she lost all of Isabel's voicemails. Voicemails, yeah. And so he goes to his hacker that we met at the beginning. Yeah, who's like, no more, no more fraud.
Speaker: Who says, can you get these voicemails back? um And he's like, no. And so he gives him his Black Lotus, which we assume he's bought at some point throughout this. yep And we actually see it in the frame and it says that it's graded at 8 .5, which I... looked up like how much an 8 .5 graded black Lotus would be. And it's somewhere in the range of like 50 to $75 ,000. I think Charlie did that too. And and it's a stupid amount of money.
Speaker: which is i mean 8 .5 is that that's out of 10 so it's not you know perfect condition or anything and that is still a shit ton of money um and then they play the second taylor swift song um yep uh they play marjorie earlier and then they play new year's day which again CHEW great Taylor Swift songs. Yeah. I love both of these songs. Yeah. um And I cried when Marjorie came on.
Speaker: Yeah, I did not cry when Marcher came on. He... um Oh, this is when the hacker tells him, he says, can't you just call her? And he goes, she won't answer. And he goes, why don't you leave her voicemails? And I'm like. Oh!
Speaker: Oh, wow. Then it's it's New Year's um and he's leaving her voicemails at his mansion pool. And this is the thing that really pissed me off where his friends come in and they're like, they start talking to him. He goes, where's the old Wes? And he goes. The the old Wes can't come to the phone right now because he's dead. And I'm like, fuck you.
Speaker: I thought it was funny because he was listening to um New Year's. Yeah, yeah, which means that he was listening to Reputation because New Year's Day is the last track on Reputation. We all get it. New Year's Day is not on Reputation. I thought New Year's Day was on Lover.
Speaker: No, New Year's Day is the last track on Reputation. I'm pretty sure. I'm going to cut this out um if I'm wrong. I'm going to fax check you. I'm doing it right now. i'm ah Why is this taking so long to get a track? New Year's Day's last track on reputation. I'm right.
Speaker: Seriously? Yeah. Yeah. Aww. okay. I always thought it was on Lover. That's my B. I apologize, Swifties. Yeah. um So...
Speaker: I'm like, that's really, I i just felt really, it felt really pandering. And then he says, look what you made me do after yeah Harry Shum Jr. tackles him into the pool. I'm like, come on guys. This is like embarrassing.
Speaker: I thought it was funny. I felt standard, too, and I enjoyed it. There you go. Yeah. Yeah. um This is like, yeah, I don't know. It's like. it it's It's like the star what would the Star Wars movies do to nerds like this movie is doing to us. It's like, hey, remember this?
Speaker: You like this, don't you? same s slight eat up the slop piggies yeah um Remember you've got mail. Hey, remember that movie? Hey, do you like the notebook? remember the um Remember Taylor Swift?
Speaker: Yeah. She gets her voicemails back. ah It's sweet. He goes running after her because he left a voicemail saying that he was going to be at Jose's, this taco place in Austin on New Year's. And he goes running after her. It's pouring down rain and they're also shooting off fireworks, which I'm like, I imagine that those are probably CGI and they couldn't decide which one they wanted. So they went with both. Yeah.
Speaker: I don't think you can set fireworks off in the rain. You could try. I mean... Apparently Austin sets off fireworks, whether it's rain or shine. So yeah. Hey. It's Texas, baby.
Speaker: um ah He finds her at Jose's and says that he loves her. He says, you make me feel brave. You make me feel everything. I know you don't need a man, but I sure as hell need you. And then they make out. And you can only kind of blame her. yeah And she's like, that was good. I feel like Meg Ryan.
Speaker: Yeah. and then we cut all pander toward yeah And then we cut forward to, I assume the spring, um because again, they're outside at some at a but a back and san outdoor music. Yeah. And it's ah months later and he's calling, at least leaving a voicemail for Isabel and asks for her blessing and says, send me a sign.
Speaker: And then she's also leaving a voicemail for. for Isabel and she says I'm going to be alright. I think he's a bird like us. yeah And then dancing on our own starts playing. And it's like the sign from his villain. That's when I cried. Oh my God. I'm tearing up now. Just like thinking about it. Like this movie was like emotional. Like.
Speaker: They really nail the ending, despite a lot of stuff in the middle pissing me off. she gets it she gets everyone to dance and they're all dancing to dancing on my own. And it's really fucking sweet. So sweet. And like, the thing is, is um also what I didn't realize when I was looking at fun facts. So this is the next step. Emma's fun facts. Emma's fun facts. um Apparently in the background.
Speaker: There, Isabella can be seen dancing. Oh shit. No way. Really? Yeah. Yeah. Oh, that's good. She's just like, they just like planted her. It's not, they don't ever focus on it. It's just sort of like an Easter egg for if you're paying attention.
Speaker: That's pretty good. Which is really good. Yeah. um ah oh my god now i'm getting really emotional thinking about it oh god yeah because like she's dancing with her and she's she's giving her blessing and Uh. Yeah. I really enjoyed this movie. Um,
Speaker: Yes, I felt pandered to, but i I enjoyed every second of being pandered to. That's why they do it. I feel like there was a lot of plot holes.
Speaker: Toxic masculinity. Um. That was just sort of blazed over. But at the end of the day, we don't come here for the Pulitzer Prize winning pieces.
Speaker: We don't, even though we have some that have won Pulitzer Prizes. Liam McKendrick does not have a Pulitzer Prize yet. Yes, and I do not think it will be this movie. It will not be this movie. um I think the the beginning and end are really strong, especially the ending. And I feel like it lost me a lot in the middle. But um it's it's a fun watch. It's better than a lot of the slop on Netflix. Yeah. Exactly. It's I mean, and that's the thing is that like. In a...
Speaker: Era of oversaturation of content. um It is. One of the good ones. Yeah. You could do a lot worse, but like. Yeah. As someone who has a dead sister, like this movie didn't like destroy me like I thought it might, you know?
Speaker: yeah Oh, I didn't even think about that one. Yeah. Oh, that's fine. Yeah. It's like, yeah, it's, it's. Well, it did nothing. Yeah, we didn't, I mean. About time, which. I mean, my sister is like 15 years older than me. We didn't have the relationship that the sisters have in this, obviously. um But, you know, yeah, still.
Speaker: Yeah. Something I was thinking about, for sure, while watching that. Yeah. ah It's fine. I'm fine. he yeah it's really good and like you know the perfect song to pick for for me i have so much like emotion involved in in robin yeah especially that album yeah i mean the listeners will remember from people we meet on vacation.
Speaker: Yeah, exactly. I feel like Dancing on My Own has got to be at least the third movie they've used it in. It's such an iconic song. This is the fourth movie we've done that takes place in San Francisco.
Speaker: Oh yeah. oh At least. Right. Yeah. Cause there's what's up doc. Princess Diaries. Um, ah Always be my maybe. Fourth meal's for Isabel.
Speaker: Is that all? i think that All of those have been recent. Have those all been this year? Is this the first movie we've done in 2026? Always Be My Maybe was like two years ago. Oh really? Okay. Yeah.
Speaker: Oh, oh, no, um, also, um, oh, no, no, no, no, no, that's not it. Same as this girl. Huh, yeah, that's a lot. Yeah. I feel like the mayor of San Francisco was in at least two of those movies. Oh, he was. He was in... Princess Diaries and Oh, he was in another one. We did another one. Yeah, I know. There's gotta be another one. This is our fifth one.
Speaker: Oh, it's um also, whatchamacallit, Saving Faces in San Francisco. Saving Faces in San Francisco. Oh my days. Always be my baby oh there's several that we haven't watched that are in san francisco Um...
Speaker: There's only four on this. that I was like, be San Francisco rom -coms and this list only has four on it. None of them are movies that we've seen. Okay, we're not going to find it. Yeah.
Speaker: ah But he does he does appear in... Two movies. He doesn't appear in this one. But keep losing money. Yeah. Oh man, we're going to have to watch all of these. All of these are so good.
Speaker: There's like at least there's like eight more San Francisco rom -coms for us to watch. Well, you know what they say. They, you left. Your heart in San Francisco. Apparently. I've never been to San Francisco. Neither have I.
Speaker: Yeah, we should go. yeah i What are we doing next week? Speaker: uh shared notes app where we're adding movies to this list to to to have Gia watch these movies Um, So she hasn't seen any movies, but one movie that she has seen and wanted to talk about on this show is the.
Speaker: Theater Kid Classic Movie Camp. Which is... Really stretching the bounds of not really a rom -com, but who gives a shit? We're going to allow it because this movie is a part of my DNA. Me too.
Speaker: It is so ingrained in my soul. The amount of times that I've watched this movie. Mwah. And I know it's not good. I know it's not good. No, it's not good. I know the acting is terrible. But it gives us... Big screen debuts.
Speaker: Anna Kendrick? And. um Oh, what's his name? Who? was... in in the Heights and in...
Speaker: Uh, Hamilton. Yeah, I know who you're talking about. yeah name yeah But ah he's the one that... that When he's Romeo, he breaks down and... He does. yeah The end of West Side Story.
