Go Get Your Ghoul: The Witch

Transcript

Speaker: Um, how are you, Katie? Uh, good, good. We're seeing Resident Evil tonight. Oh, like the classic? No, the new one. The the Zach Kregger one. Oh, there's a new one?

Speaker: Yeah, directed by the guy who did Barbarian and Weapons. How did you not know this? have no idea. is news to me. not on Letterboxd. Um, uh, yeah, it's got great reviews. Um, we're excited. We're gonna go There's, like, a bunch of us going, yeah. Is it, okay, so Resident Evil has like a thousand movies out.

Speaker: Do you need to have all of them? This is complete reboot. has nothing to do with any of the other ones, yeah. Oh, nice. Okay, I was like, did you need to have seen all of the... um I haven't seen, i've I've barely made it through the first Resident Evil movie on multiple occasions. I've been like, hey, let's watch the whole series. And like, on more than one occasion, we've like started watching it and we're like, this is terrible.

Speaker: i I don't want to watch five more of these. Yeah. um Yeah. Yeah. A podcast I like is iss going through them right now. And one of the guys really likes it. And the other people are like, why are you making us watch?

Speaker: Right. I only remember the first one for the scene with the lasers where it turns people into cubes. Yeah. i remember that. Yeah. Yeah. And it's like, it has nothing to do with, ah again, like gamer moment. It has nothing to do with the games at all. Like they have, I think in later entries, they have some of the characters who have the same name as some of the characters in the games, but it's- Wait, what? The games are nothing like the Resident Evil movie, at least the first one that I've seen.

Speaker: Wait, Mila Jokovic or Djokovic or whatever? That's not character- Jovovich. Jovovich, that's not a character in the game? Absolutely not. Completely made up for the movie, yeah.

Speaker: What the hell? What the Yeah, um genetically altered clone person with superpowers. Not in the game, no. Oh, the game's just about zombies, right?

Speaker: The game is about, the first game is about, there's a group, it's a group of like SWAT team people who have been investigating this mansion that there's been some kind of zombie outbreak and things kind of escalate as the sequels progress.

Speaker: But yeah, you're you're Jill Valentine, a cop from Raccoon City in the first game. And- Chris Redfield. there's There's two characters in most of the games and you can play it either way.

Speaker: Well, this is news to me. That's insane. yeah it's weird. um So apparently the new one is also not like doing the story of the games, but is more, but is closer to the games in terms of like tone and stuff like that, which is like, okay can't be B movie is the tone of the games. Like i they can be scary, but they're also like silly.

Speaker: Yeah, yeah. We love Silly. And we love ah the guy that directed Weapons and Barbarian. Yeah, from The Whitest Kids You Know. Yeah. Oh, he's from The Whitest Kids You Know?

Speaker: See, we should have done Barbarian or Weapons this year. But, you know, next year, we'll do one of them. I thought about it. I thought about it. But if we did Weapons, it would be too witchy of a season.

Speaker: Oh, yes. This is our second witch movie in a row. Yeah. Yeah. um Season of the witch. Famously featured in today's film. um I mean, the song? No, it's not.

Speaker: No, it's not. No, it's not. Oh, sidebar before I even like get into that. Have you been watching the Lizzie Borden show? No, of course not. You can always ask yourself, did did Ryan Murphy have anything to do with this show? then Katie didn't watch it. Then Katie didn't watch it. um I'm watching it. I haven't watched any of the other monster series. I tried watching the first one, which is about Dahmer.

Speaker: um Couldn't couldn't get through it. Seems in poor taste. Yeah, it was insane. um And ah kind of unintended.

Speaker: Pun unintended. But I love the Lizzie Borden case. um I'm a sucker for Victorian horror. Like, give me some of that. So I, I've been binging it. And ah Katie, how terrible is it?

Speaker: It's so insane. it's so insane like once again they've made her gay which okay i guess if this is the umpteenth time we're making her gay like i mean i think there's some of it there's there's some evidence of that in the actual story i think that was yeah some of the some some theory some theorize that that was why she she did she got caught with whatever that lady was and that's why she killed those people yeah yeah Yeah. Yeah. um Which, like, fine. Okay. um but this time... playing... Who plays her in this? um

Speaker: Annette Bening and Warren Beatty's daughter. Of course. Wait, Annette Bening and Warren Beatty's daughter? Warren Beatty's, like, 90. Is she, like, 50 years old? like No, she's, like, 27. Gross. Yep. And...

Speaker: gross ah and ah Not only have we made her gay, but this time ah we gave her something akin to endometriosis.

Speaker: Oh, OK. so she's got painful, heavy periods and she bleeds all the time. You know, when I think about movies, about movies and TV shows that are going to heavily deal with menstruation, think Ryan Murphy is really the one to handle that. I agree. He's definitely has some firsthand knowledge, obviously. Well, did he write this one? He doesn't because he doesn't write all these things. Let's see. That's true. I really hope Monster, the Lizzie Borden story. I really, really hope a woman wrote it because like it's like not exactly endometriosis, but like it's painful, heavy periods. And like she bleeds like crazy. And it's in the first episode.

Speaker: And her stepmother makes fun of her for it. Yeah, like all the time. All episodes written by Ian Brennan, famous for Glee.

Speaker: So basically Ryan Murphy. So not, not a, not a woman, not a woman. Yeah. Cool. A straight white man. Yes. Let's have a straight white man write this story about female rage. Um,

Speaker: Then we also get Sarah Paulson as that Charlize Theron monster serial killer. Eileen, what's her face? Wuornos?

Speaker: Yeah. And it's like, she's also there. and it's like, why are we combining these two stories? i only signed up for one serial killer backstory. Well, that's like, that's kind of what all those shows do, right? Where they like, they're like, theyve they're all the same. yeah Shoot us, shoot us. Oh, man, I've been listening way too much Lone Island podcast. Are you drunk?

Speaker: No, I'm waking up. su it's weird It's eight in the morning, guys. and di di di She's got a teacup in one hand. And I'm flinging it around. I just have the personality of a drunk person. I've been told this on many occasions.

Speaker: of The personality. Effusive and loving. That's like that not a bad thing to be. That's not a bad thing. And loud. uh and when i get really excited i slur my words um it's just the way it is charlie constantly is telling me that i'm drunk um anyways you know who's not drunk everyone in this movie that's right guys you guessed it this is go get your oh oh oh that was that thunder That was Thunder. That was Thunder. ah

Speaker: This is the podcast where Emma and Katie... ah fuck it. Let's put us as the twins. Emma twins Katie... Emma and Katie befriended... Emma and Katie evil, monstrous little little children.

Speaker: They're not that evil. They don't harm any the animals. They're terrible. They're little monsters. This is a horror movie about evil little children. Yeah. Evil little children. Emma and Katie have a best friend who's a goat and said goat just he tells us things.

Speaker: And, you know, our family's been banished because our dad's too much of a God loving Christian man. Ever heard of it? Our dad is too much of an asshole for the Puritans. Mm hmm.

Speaker: Yeah, too much of an asshole for the Puritans, who were already too much of assholes for the British. Exactly. The the Puritans, who were were too too boring and religious for all of England, left and came to Massachusetts, where this guy was too boring and religious for even those people. Yeah. So the guy who plays Death in Supernatural had to kick us out.

Speaker: Exactly. egg oh that's where that goes from. um And so we live in the middle of nowhere, banished from our little village. And we just are spending our days with Black Phillip, our goat, and our family. And then our youngest brother disappears. Apparently, it was a wolf that took him. But I don't know. i have a feeling Black Phillip knows the real story.

Speaker: And our eldest sister starts getting the flack for all the things that are going wrong. And everyone's like, you're a woman. You're it's because of you. And then also like our older brother's perving on her. It's a little weird.

Speaker: And so we call her a witch and then she gets real mean about it. And um everyone ends up dying. That's right, guys.

Speaker: okay I'm Emma. Yeah. And I'm Katie. and Oh yeah, we die. Yeah. Off screen. Today we are talking about the Witch.

Speaker: The Witch! So it's it's listed as, it was made, premiered Sundance in January of 2015, but it didn't come out in theaters ah in wide audiences until the next year, 2016, February 2016. Written and directed by Robert Eggers. This is his first feature film. He made several shorts before this. The Telltale Heart, which definitely got some people some people saw. Like, I know that...

Speaker: It was streaming somewhere at some point. I know that I, I've seen it, the, his Telltale Heart movie. I think I, it must've been after The Witch came out that I saw it. But I know that, that it was like fairly well-regarded short, a short that people actually saw before The Witch came out. Which is very rare.

Speaker: and well, a little less rare in the horror community, I would say. There are definitely some, some horror shorts every couple of years that kind of get do the rounds. And um he was a production designer before he started making movies, which shows. Yeah, that shows. And since The Witch, he has made The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu, which... yeah Varying degrees of success for for me, at least.

Speaker: and And for me. Yeah, I did not like Nosferatu. I have not seen the lighthouse or um the. You haven't seen the lighthouse? That's surprising. I know. I know. And especially now that I live in New England, I should have watch the lighthouse. And I love our pets.

Speaker: But I haven't seen that or the Norseman. And but I have seen Nosferatu. And I also famously dislike Nosferatu. Well, it's not good. That's the main reason. It's just not good.

Speaker: It's just boring and long and stupid. It is. ah Yeah. um Maybe one day we'll do it here. So this movie takes place. It's it's called a New England folktale is the subtitle.

Speaker: It takes place in 1630. And if you know your American history, the Mayflower landed in 1620. So it's not long after the very first pilgrims came to this area and started ruining things immediately.

Speaker: Yep. The first scene we get is this family being, is the, the first thing we get is the, the scene with the most people in it. Yeah. It is ah it's a, it's meeting house of the pilgrims and the guy who plays death from supernatural is kicking Ralph Innocent, eison Innocent, Innocent.

Speaker: out of their being banished because he is too much of a bummer for even the pilgrims yeah they're like he's literally telling him in old english like dude lighten up like come on dude like what what is going on yeah and he says i cannot be judged by false christians yeah and they're like you need to take a chill pill Yeah, yeah. We have Anya Taylor-Joy. This is her first movie role. Maybe Anya Taylor-Joy. She has a role. She was role as an extra in Vampire Academy before this. Oh.

Speaker: Okay. Uncredited. Yeah. Yeah. But she is, I think she was 18. I'm not sure about, 100% sure about the filming. I'm fairly certain this was filmed in 2014, which means she would have been 18. And she does have a nude scene in this, so that would make sense. was going to say, as that was happening, I was like, wait, how old is Anya Taylor-Joy? Like, is this allowed?

Speaker: Yeah, I think it's allowed. of She, yeah, so she was 18. She's a little baby. she's And now she's one of our biggest movie stars. Yeah, good for look at her go.

Speaker: So um they get banished. Yeah. And there's, at the very the very beginning of this movie, we start to get the the visual and and music cues that happen over and over in this. There's lots of really intense music, which is weird.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. instrumentation like strings and stuff like it's not it's not like a violin it's something else i don't know what it is and like this this movie was like before or it was at the beginning of a24 really finding its brand i find i feel it terms of horror yes they they're 24 had released a lot of stuff before this like because i checked i was like what is the history of a24 this yeah This was its first huge horror hit for sure, but A24 had released a lot of stuff before this. Okay. But like, it just sort of, like this movie is such quintessential, like if a twenty four was to have a channel, like everything would be like this. Because this is like A24 is like creepy, um like just dreadful, like,

Speaker: stressful films that are created by the weird soundtrack and the beautiful cinematography. Yeah. Yeah. hundred percent. They, they, they created a brand for the movies that they acquire pretty early on for sure. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: So and it's not like Focus Features has a brand like that. Yeah, exactly. guess they kind of do. But A24 is like so potent. Like this and 20th Summer and like they just feel the same. is the only distribution company that most people know, I would say. Like outside of the the the five majors, like most people aren't going to know.

Speaker: you know, like, hey, list the indie labels that release, like, what's the difference between a twenty four and neon and focus features and searchlight and, you know, all that stuff. I was going to say the one with the the little, the eye the looking glass. Spyglass Entertainment? Spyglass, yeah.

Speaker: There's a lot, immediately we get this incredible tension. They're on their little cart with all their furniture and it's dark and the, whatever instrument that is, is going crazy. Yeah. hard cut to bright sunlight and silence and that's something that's kind of repeated throughout the movie is this incredible tension released by both light and silence and this is the first of Emma's fun facts Emma's fun facts um so it is it not Joel Edgerton Joel Edgerton Joel Edgerton is not in this film oh no wait he's in it comes at night the director is Robert Eggers Robert Eggers. I knew there was an egg there. Robert Eggers. So Robert Eggers said that while filming this, he utilized as much as possible, which 100% is not possible in modern filming standards, but as much as possible, he only utilized natural light, which is very evident and also helps to sort of add to

Speaker: the look and the feel of the piece. It just like, it makes it feel like you're really in pilgrim times. And so like, it's all like natural or like, like firelight, torchlight. i mean, I'm sure they had to do some film. Yeah, yeah. which is sad This was shot Jaren Blaschke or Jaren Blaschke, who is the cinematographer for this and The Lighthouse and Nosferatu.

Speaker: Yeah. Well, he did a great job on all three of those. Oh, and The Northman. I don't know why I didn't have The Northman on that list. But yeah, he's done so he's done all of Eggers movies. Yeah. And he's done the new one, Verwolf.

Speaker: Verwolf. Also, um it should be said, as of either yesterday or today, it was announced that he is going to do Romeo and Juliet. um Yeah, because if there's one thing we need, it's another Romeo and Juliet adaptation. Right? Yeah.

Speaker: It's going to be insane and bizarre and really dark, I'm sure. um Why could we not just leave it with DiCaprio and Danes?

Speaker: Leave it with DiCaprio and Danes. There's been so many Romeo and Juliet adaptations. I just, I think that, I don't know. I think there's some things that we just, it's just tired. Yeah. We don't need more. really interested in that. I'm not really interested in vervuls either.

Speaker: baville yeah well i don't want to see two 14 year olds frenching um it probably is that that does seem like something he would do is cast two like really little kids that's probably what he'll do yeah yeah you sick freak yeah we just made up a guy to be mad at um so yeah there's lots of natural light lot of weird instrumentation there's lots of uh When we are specifically like looking at the woods, there's lots of choirs of women singing. like yeah not Not even singing, but just vocalizing.

Speaker: I assume that years pass because then we cut we cut from them looking at like an empty field to a house being built and everything. yeah and like Multiple houses. like They have a house. They have a farm yeah the whole compound situation. Stable. A goat corral. you know Yeah.

Speaker: And this is just an extremely oppressive religious environment. And that's kind of what this movie is about. Like, we we start with Anya Taylor-Joy praying. and she says, I deserve all shame and misery in this life and hellfire afterward. So they are very, very obsessed with sin and obsessed with their own lack of of goodness and and yeah like as and what Christians would call grace. Like that is not something that is that is really accepted by these people. Now these people were Calvinists, which the thing about, like all the Puritans were, and the thing about Calvinists is that they believed that God, when you are born, God has already decided whether if you are going to heaven or hell. And so there's nothing really that you can do

Speaker: Super. Except, like, just hope that you're destined for for heaven. Which has always been very confusing to me. And yes this is certainly not what Calvin is. So why wouldn't you just do whatever you wanted? Right?

Speaker: I don't understand why are we trying so hard. But I guess the whole fact is that- I'm no theologian. You don't know. i'm I'm no theologian. But from what I understand, the idea was that you just try to live as good and pure a life as you can.

Speaker: And hope that you go to heaven. and But what modern Protestants would, you know, would criticize this belief as as a lack of of grace, meaning the grace of God that saves you from going to hell, which is what ah most modern Protestants believe.

Speaker: And that was Theology Corner with Katie. Oh, let's do that. Theology Corner. I'm the least qualified person to have a Theology Corner the world.

Speaker: That's crazy. um Definitely not that. mean, I feel like I learned something. Okay. Well, it's half-assed, I'm sure. But this is, that they are that they are obsessed with their own sin. They are obsessed with not being good enough for anything good to happen to them. Yeah. there is It is a life of misery followed by heaven which is why, how religion gained such traction for so long because life was terrible.

Speaker: And when life is terrible, people will tell you that, okay, well, your life is terrible now, but you will one, day you must work hard because one day the promise of heaven will, will save you and you will have a good life once you're dead, which is the only way to increase capital from people whose lives are miserable by promising them an eternal reward.

Speaker: You know what? You know what these Puritans needed, though? You know what these Puritans needed? They just needed a little a little optimistic boost. They just needed someone to take a look at their glass and go, I see a glass glass half full.

Speaker: I see, through a glass darkly, a glass half full. A glass half full. ah I do believe things might be hard right now, guys, but, you know, tomorrow, why don't we just all have a little party?

Speaker: The sun is shining. hey Yeah, that's not their vibe. That is not, that's the, pretty much the opposite of what Puritans, what Puritans did. Their, their whole deal is um misery and suffering. Because i mean, like, yeah, life is hard. Like there's nothing to eat.

Speaker: um no It sucks. But you know what? shouldn't have left England. But you know what? You know what? At least we got corn. No, they don't.

Speaker: The corn is infected with what's likely ergot, yeah the the mold that makes you crazy. That was actually, um that is featured in this film at the beginning, whenever one of them holds up like a rotted thing of corn, it's supposed to allude to the fact that there's ergot on it. However, that is factually incorrect. Yeah. because it doesn't grow on corn. It grows on wheat and it grows on barley. But um I guess all they had in Canada where they were filming this was corn. So they were like, oh here's all this corn.

Speaker: Look at all this corn. I guess corn looks better on camera. Than wheat? Yes. they I mean, yeah, it's, yeah, I understand that. So, yes, so ergot is a ergot poisoning is ah is a theory for the the reason ah behind the Salem Witch Trials and everything. I don't know if I believe that. I think that I think that um men hating women the main reason.

Speaker: Men hating women and and and capricious little children, which yeah both of which are heavily featured in this movie. Oh, yeah. And also, um well, the Salem Witch Trials also was all about people just wanting what their neighbor had. And by that, I mean their land. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, their their land and and, you know, just accusing one another for for for selfish reasons, which. Yeah, we don't need, humans don't need a hallucinogen um on bread to make us turn against each other. Yeah, 100%. Hey, have you ever seen the Twilight Zone episode The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street?

Speaker: No, I haven't. It's really, it's really cool. It's one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes. Is it like classic Twilight Zone? Oh yeah, it's a famous episode. It's a famous one. Yeah, it's classic. It's from the sixty s It is, the that suits it's it's just a street on in like suburban town and the lights, the power goes out and everybody kind of like comes out onto the street and starts talking to each other and like, hey, why are the powers out? Some of guys like, I'll over to the other street and see.

Speaker: And then like somebody's but somebody's lights come on and then goes off and then somebody else's lights come on and they start like using one another and everyone starts like arguing it's like, oh, you did this and you did like, et cetera. um And then at the very end, it's like, you see these two shadowy figures. It's like, they're, it's, we assume to be aliens aliens and they're like, we don't need to conquer anybody. We just turn their lights off, turn it on and they'll all turn on each other and kill themselves. like Yeah.

Speaker: It's exactly what's happening in in real time. Yeah, yeah. And it's, it I mean, it happens now and it happened then. Yep. And you know what? We didn't need hallucinogenic bread.

Speaker: Yeah, exactly. So Thomason, who is Anya Taylor-Joy, who is the oldest child, is keeping Samuel, the the youngest child, the baby. Yep. He's like, what, six months?

Speaker: Yeah, yeah, very young. Something like that, yeah. We have Kate, Kate Dickey is the mom who you will recognize from Department Q. Yep. If you watch that. Department Q's great.

Speaker: Go watch Department It's, yeah, it's pretty good. Yeah, there's a five yeah five children. There's Thomason, Caleb, um and then the twin twins, which are Mercy and Jonas, and then Samuel is the Yeah, yeah.

Speaker: So Thomason has is keeping Samuel. She's playing peekaboo with him. He is in front of her on a blanket and peekabooing at him. And then she closes her eyes for second a second and opens him and he's gone.

Speaker: Like yeah just impossibly gone. Like there's no, there's nothing nearby. There's no, it's, it's in no way Thomason's fault. No, it is not. got And this baby is like not old enough to crawl, nor he fast enough to crawl.

Speaker: No, he's a, he's an infant. yeah And then we cut to see everyone, like she's screaming his name and kind looking for him. And we cut to the woods and we see this woman in a red cloak running through the woods, holding the baby.

Speaker: And then cut to, we don't actually see her kill the baby. no um No. do we see We see her like put his hand her hand on him and then hold a knife. And we just cut to her like smashing up Yeah. Something. We don't see what it is. And then she's rubbing it all over her body.

Speaker: Blood all over her body. And then she has a she has a stick. It's not even a broom. It's just like a branch. And then she starts to fly toward the moon. And it it rules. It's yeah so good. yeah It's so creepy. i wasn' a a little I was a little thrown off, though, because the way that the baby murder shot was...

Speaker: The baby murder shot. I mean, disturbing enough and in and and of itself. But, um... i was I couldn't tell if it was a man or a woman because she's like this old little hag lady. And it's a crone, yeah. A crone. and ah And so I was just like, I kept being like, is that a dude? Is that a lady? i don't, who is that? What is happening? And then at one point, it looks like she grabs the baby's penis.

Speaker: And I thought she was going to cut off the baby's penis. Jesus Christ. No, she does that. That's where my brain went. She reaches her hand from below up to grab, to hold him down is what happened. Oh, okay. Which is why I thought she was grabbing the baby's penis and chopping it off. And so then it smash cuts to the smashing scene. And it I was like, okay, so she smashed up the baby's penis. Where's the rest of the baby? Oh my God, Emma.

Speaker: Listen, this movie is disturbing, but it is not that disturbing. I... i honestly thought that was what was happening that's so fucked up emma that's that's on you i don't know i was like well it's 824 anything's possible never never occurred to me in a million years um that is not what happens nope they just straight up kill the baby they kill the baby um it is oh and that the the it's a naked uh

Speaker: woman also, a naked older woman. say, and the baby's naked too. Yeah, the baby's naked. Everybody's naked, yeah. Everybody's naked in this movie. Well, I mean, they and nudity is a, it's, you're you're removing these, these like vestments of, of um religion, right? You're removing the, the chains that are holding you back. Well, and like famously, like your sin, right? Because Adam and Eve were nude until Eve, ugh,

Speaker: Probably actually Adam, if we're being honest here. What do you mean actually? I mean, a man wrote this book. Like you're saying, you're saying it it you historically the the true story of Adam and Eve is that Adam ate the apple. thats Yeah. And it was, it was rewritten to be towards hating women. So they said it was Eve.

Speaker: I went to Christian high school. There it is. Yep. All right. And so famously, famously Eve, but actually Adam ah eats the apple. Not a real thing. Not a lot of fact.

Speaker: It's a fact. It's in the Bible. Nobody did because it's not real. It's in the Bible. Or as they call it, le biblé. Do they?

Speaker: ah Sure. um

Speaker: and um And then that's when they suddenly are just like, oh my God, I'm naked. i'm i have sin. Right. Yes. Yes. Yes. And then that's when they put on clothes. So kate we cut to Catherine is just, the mother is just wailing and scream crying, um as you might expect. Yeah. mean, like, of course. Her baby's dead.

Speaker: Caleb, the the older boy who's like 12, maybe. Yeah. Yeah. How old do think Thomason is? you think she's like 16, 17? 15 or maybe. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's definitely, she's definitely, they say that she's had her period. So she's, but we don't know how long it's been. So I would say, you know, maybe 15 at the youngest. Yeah. um Caleb and his father are going out into the the woods. We see, this is when we see the rotten, that of the corn with something growing on it. Yep. um They're going to run out of food if they don't hunt. So, um and again, the other thing is like, Catherine has nothing, no comfort. Like her husband has just left her. Yeah. Yeah. She's alone in the house.

Speaker: Oh my God. He sucks so bad, but we'll get there. So fucking hard. It is all William's fault. Um, and and admit I mean, most two women do tell two women tell him to his face. This is your fault. And he also says it is himself. So we do have give them credit for that. when When we get there, I'll tell you my reaction.

Speaker: Um, so he is like, listen, I can't deal with this woman screaming and crying. So we're going to go into the woods. the The men are going into the woods. And he's like, so there I've set these traps for for for game because we're going to starve to death. Like, the the corn is bad, and if we don't hunt, we'll die.

Speaker: And he's like, he's like quizzing Caleb on what a horrible person he is. Yeah. You know that you're tainted with original sin and that you are an evil little boy. And he's like, but yes, father, I'm an evil little boy. Yeah, constantly. Like, if this was any other time period, like, this is like, have you ever watched Criminal Minds?

Speaker: No, I have not. We've had this discussion. I love Criminal Minds. Famously, Emma loves Criminal Minds. I like Matthew Gray Goobler. Yeah, I do too. but ah And um there's this whole like little mini arc. Like I want to say it was like a three episode stretch that had Dawson from Dawson's Creek.

Speaker: James Van Der Beek, RIP. RIP. RIP. So James Van Der Peak is a serial killer. And okay his whole stretch that they go through is the fact that his dad who raised him was the super, super hyper Christian guy who would like lock him in a room and go, you're sin. You're full of sin. Everyone is sin. The Bible says that you suck and sin. Yeah. subtle yeah Yeah. So it's basically like modern day this dad. Yeah.

Speaker: Okay, sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So if Caleb were was to grow up, he would become James Van Der Beek, RIP, serial killer in Grimald Mines. Quite possibly. um Yeah, he's like, my nature is empty of grace, bent into sin, only unto sin and that continually. And his father's like, yeah, sounds good, man. Yep, yep. That's exactly what I taught my boy.

Speaker: Great father-son talks. And there, the traps are empty. Nothing's there. yeah And then the boy starts talking about Samuel. he's like, but so Samuel is in hell. And he's like, we don't know. And he's like, what wickedness had Samuel done?

Speaker: Yeah. Like, I, you know, I know I've had, you know, bad thoughts. um You know, he's looking at his sister's boobs. Constantly.

Speaker: And, um but he's like, but Samuel was a baby. Like, what could he, what he has he done? And his father's like, shut the fuck up. Don't question my logic and get back to the compound.

Speaker: We're Calvinists, boy. God has decided. i mean, they don't, he doesn't say that, but like, he's like, God has decided before we were born and how we hope that Samuel's in heaven, but we don't know. It's like,

Speaker: refusal to comfort this child absolutely refusal to comfort anybody yeah yeah he' says he's a dumb bitch he's he's a dumb bitch um yeah this is when he tells Caleb Caleb's like where did you get these traps and he's like I sold your mother's silver cup yeah don't tell her yeah And he's like, this person who's supposed to be this paragon of righteousness and like goodness yeah is lying to everybody. That's the first thing. He gets his son in on a lie immediately. And like, yeah that's a sin, bro. Like, yeah that's one thing you're definitely not supposed to be doing. You talk about wickedness.

Speaker: Right? You straight up just lying to your wife and then you lean in hard on that fucking lie. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Isn't the next shot the dinner?

Speaker: The next shot is Thomason gathering eggs and she drops one and it's got like a bloody ah dead chick inside. Yeah. Like things are not going great at the farm in general.

Speaker: no they're not. And then he is trying to shoot a rabbit and the powder, he misloads the rifle and the powder burns his face. Yeah. and it And he gets real mad.

Speaker: Yeah, he's a real piece of shit. And then we meet the the evil twins, the villain of the movie. These nasty, nasty little 10 year old, maybe, maybe no, like seven or eight year old children. They're like little kids.

Speaker: They're horrible. They are, they are absolutely, like i have, there're it's like a, it's like a King Joffrey Baratheon situation. Like I hated these little children.

Speaker: They literally don't do anything. They're just taunting Phillip. Oh my God. No, no, no. They do lots of stuff. They are... I did not witness all the stuff that they did.

Speaker: They're running after Black Phillip, the goat, the male goat yeah that they have. And chanting, like singing songs, like Black Phillip wears a crown, Black Phillip is like the king. And, you know, it's a little spooky, as twins often are.

Speaker: Yeah, Phillip lies to his mom immediately And she's I've never been in the woods. and allowed to go in the woods. And he's like, oh, I thought I saw an apple tree and I wanted to to take us there. We wanted to get a surprise for you.

Speaker: And like just easily lies to his mother. the father has problem with this. Like the father is like okay with with sin as long as it benefits him. Yeah. As long as it benefits him and as long as it's a fucking boy doing it.

Speaker: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. like this is This is, again, and maybe it's the fact that I was binging Lizzie Borden around it, but this is another film that is about female rage. Yeah, it is. And it's another horror movie about being a woman. or Honestly, even more than that, it's so it's a horror movie about being a person in yeah the 1630s in rural New England. like yeah It's just a bad time to be anybody at all. Right?

Speaker: Added by the fact that you're a woman and your brother doesn't know any boobs but your boobs and he's perving after you. yeah honestly the real horror of this movie she i mean she she doesn't even realize she doesn't notice it she doesn't know like and he's just constantly staring at her boobs and she's like what you doing what's going on caleb hey buddy they have this kind of sweet relationship too like it's it's a shame yeah yeah the way it ends So ah they're at the they're by the like creek or whatever and Mercy the little twin girl is she's like I'm the witch of the woods and I'm gonna put a spell on you.

Speaker: And she's like Black Phillip told me things. Yeah. And this is when Thomason makes the worst mistake of her life. Oh. Where trying.

Speaker: just wants to shut them up. She wants Mercy to shut the fuck up because she's a horrible little child who can't She's just just like a six year old. She deserves nothing. emma um and So I guess in this scenario, I'm mercy.

Speaker: but

Speaker: So Thomas is like, no, I'm a witch. And i I wrote my name in his black book and I'm going to get you. She's just trying to scare her little sister. Yeah. He's like, I'm going to get you if you don't shut the fuck up. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. But she goes a little too hard. She goes a little too hard and she like tackles her and puts her hand over her She goes, don't tell mother and father. Yeah. And Caleb's like, why would you do that? Yeah. Like I was sick of her. Yeah. um Which is fair. I mean, like to be fair, we've all said horrible things to our siblings that we don't mean. Exactly. And that's, this is not going to be the first or the last time a sibling tries to scare their younger sibling so that they'll shut up and leave them alone. Yeah. Yeah. Or, you know, threatened to murder your sibling. That's just part of being a sibling. It's just part of being a sibling. Everybody knows it. um You don't actually mean it unless you're James Van Der Beek, RIP on Criminal Minds.

Speaker: So they're at dinner and Catherine asks Thomason, Catherine's the mom, asks Thomason, where's my silver cup? And Thomason's like, I don't know. yeah And she immediately starts blaming Thomason. Catherine also blames Thomason for Samuel's disappearance. She blames Thomason for everything. She's very quick to blame Thomason for things. Yeah, because she also hates women because she was raised in a society to hate women. Oh, 100%. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Her son couldn't have done this.

Speaker: Did a wolf vanish the cup to Thomason? Yeah. what they think a wolf took Samuel. You know who lets it fucking happen? The dad. The fucking dad.

Speaker: William's like, she did not take your cup. And he doesn't say I did, but he's like, leave her alone. She didn't take your cup. You're like- You're being a hysterical woman.

Speaker: He has this thing where he's like, it's sort of like he's comforting her, but he's like, listen, Thomason, we've lost one child out of five. Like, that's pretty good. And to be fair, he is right.

Speaker: Like, especially for for that time period, like only losing one child is incredibly lucky. Yeah. And so that's how he comforts her. yeah And he's like, don't worry about your cup. And she's like, it's not out of pride. It's not out of like greed that I want my cups. Like we could have sold it. We're going to starve to death.

Speaker: And then they they're like, we can sell Thomason to another family. Yeah. Right. that's That's where they go next is. Well, yeah. we I don't know. He doesn't. He doesn't tell her the truth. What a perfect time to tell her the truth. This right here would be. But he doesn't. No. he is She's like to be a coward.

Speaker: Yeah. And he's like, you know, don't blame Thomason for Samuel. She's like, I don't. I blame you for bringing us here. It's like, hell yeah, Catherine. hmm. Um, she's like, our corn is trash and we will starve.

Speaker: Um, so like, okay, cool. Then tomorrow morning we'll go to the village. I'll try to sell whatever I can and we'll sell Thomas into another family. Yeah. Uh, I guess we'll just, since we don't have your cup, we'll just sell our daughter.

Speaker: Yeah. So Caleb, which again was a thing people did. Yeah. So Caleb is, he like, despite like, you know, pervy glances, he does love his sister. Yeah.

Speaker: And he wants to prevent this from happening. And so he's saddling up the horse in the middle of the night. And Thomas is like, what are you doing? And he's like, I'll be back by morning. She's like, I'm going with you. Yeah. Or I'll tell mom and dad right now. Yeah. so they go off into the woods alone and he tells her about the traps. Yeah. And he's like, been out there.

Speaker: Yes, and so they're they're looking for the traps. They're also talking about, um she tells him like, God, I haven't had an apple since England. Like, I miss apples. like I miss England. I miss, I miss like, she's like, things in England were pretty. Like, things in England were were nice. He's like, I don't remember. um And she's like, you know, we weren't starving and living in England. in a one room hut and sleeping on the floor. Like things were, were nice in England and I miss it, which is so reasonable and is presented here as, you know, like that's, that's excess. That's pride. That's, that's, that's sin. You know, just wanting to not have the worst life in the world is antithetical to the Puritan beliefs and it' explicitly her father's extreme Puritan beliefs. Yeah. Which is like, come on.

Speaker: So apples are are a symbol of luxury already at this yeah point. you You know why? Do you know why? Why? Because they they were the fruit that... The Bible actually never says that an apple at all. it always call It just calls it a fruit of the forbidden tree. So we don't know what it was. Factually, it was is an apple that Eve, but actually in reality, it was most likely yeah most likely Adam because of The patriarchy.

Speaker: You gotta stop with the actually.

Speaker: so um they they get a rabbit in the traps. So that's nice. Yeah, I get rabbit. then... Then another one comes yeah and this rabbit is evil. Yeah. Well, because rabbits actually, this is actually in fact.

Speaker: Emma's fun facts. Emma's fun facts. um So ah hares and rabbits were seen as symbols of witchcraft in Pilgrim days. So they. Why?

Speaker: um Because they fuck? Because they fuck all the time. Because of ah oh my god, where is the, where I got that information? I love rabbits. Rabbits are so cute. do too. I really love, i love rabbits so much. It's, it's, I don't know. they just, they were, they they just. Okay, I believe you. Yeah, I don't know. I did.

Speaker: Don't worry. I didn't mean to put you on the spot. I thought you might have known. A hair appears frequently in this film and colonial New England hairs were considered magical creatures in their own right. They were often often associated with witches, either as a milk hair, which stole or spoiled milk from the farm animals, or the witch themselves, who were thought able to turn into a hair in order to spy on and influence people. That is a little bit of witch witchery that I feel like has fallen through the cracks over time. And I feel like we should bring that back as a, um,

Speaker: a personality trait of a witch. Yeah. Because then more rabbits. Yeah. um So, yeah, in another way, this rabbit spooks the horse, and Thomason gets thrown off the horse and knocked unconscious. Yep.

Speaker: The dog, Fowler, runs after the hare into the woods, and Caleb runs after him with the gun. Yeah. And... He is like climbing through the bramble and comes upon a little hut in the woods. And there's a terrifying young, we should say, woman there. I mean, I'd say she's a sexy young lady.

Speaker: She's a, she's a scary, sexy young lady. yeah And she's got big old, big awful boobies. Yes. Cause that's all Caleb cares about. Well, no, I mean, it's, it's relevant because that is something that he is like, you know, become infatuated with because yeah he's a,

Speaker: pubescent little boy like it's reasonable exactly yeah um so and she like she like beckons him close and like she then she starts to make out with him hard and then we cut to black well she makes out with him and then like starts like strangling him oh yeah yeah she's got got her hand and the hands around yeah and um and we cut away from that and thomason wakes up and her father finds her And they return to the house and he's like, where's Caleb? And they're like, and my girl, you are not helping yourself.

Speaker: um Oh, the dog is dead. Yes. Caleb finds it Fowler like gutted. Yeah. Yeah. And that was the second time I texted Katie and went, the real horror of this film. ah Kate is screaming at Thomasin again. Yep. Because it's on her fault. And like, tell me what were you doing in the woods? And she's like, I made a promise. And she's like, like, don't.

Speaker: Don't tell me that. Like, what is it? Well, she knows that that her dad took the cup because Caleb told her. So she doesn't want to implicate her dad. He's standing right there. Yeah. And so this is when William finally is like, I took your cup. Yeah. I sold it. Like, he finally tells Kate the truth. Yeah. And this, for a moment, she she finally softens against Thomas's. Yeah. And she's like, oh, I guess I was wrong.

Speaker: And then she goes, well, I guess I also have sin. I miss England. I hate it here. Yeah. And she says, will you damn your family to death to William? him And the answer is yes. Yes. Yes, he will. Yes, he will. Because he sucks. I wrote, what a horrible family.

Speaker: So, uh, what, uh, Thomasin is, Thomasin is caring for the goats and it's pouring down rain. And then she sees that Caleb has come back and he's naked and completely out of it. shut He's all scratched up. Looks bad. They put him, they put him down. He's feverish and unresponsive. And yeah they're like, well, something's wrong with him.

Speaker: He, ah he has, uh, they bleed him. Of course. Great job. Of course. Because, uh, colonial, uh, pilgrims. Yeah, that he has a seizure and then he vomits a whole apple, yeah which is very fucked up. So fucked up. It's so fucked up. You're like, it's so disturbing because you're like, what the fuck is coming out of his mouth? And like, and the dad takes like, not a, not pliers, but like, kind of pliers? it's ah it's a It looks like it's a it's a wooden like chisel or something. Yeah, it's like something cool. Yeah, and I'm like, oh no. And it's like it's a whole apple with one bite taken out of it. And I'm just like, oh, well I guess this is a hamnet and um Snow White had a baby.

Speaker: So this is when Mercy's like, Thomas had made him sick. The little twin is like, Thomasin, put a spell on him to make him sick. Thomasin, why are you doing this? And then the father immediately believes this seven-year-old child. ye He goes, yes, you're right. Our daughter is a witch.

Speaker: Thomasin! It's so fucking stupid. there like phil she says Black Phillip says, you're wicked. Yeah. Have we already passed by the scene? oh we must have already passed by the scene when um it's the mom and... Or Catherine Thomason and Mercy all outside. And...

Speaker: Like if Katie was to go to court, and this would be her prime evidence as to why Mercy sucks. Whereas she's just like constantly singing and they're like, shut up, Mercy. And she's just like, la, la, la, la.

Speaker: And they're like, shut up, Mercy. and she goes, la, um la, la, Doesn't listen to anybody. Like, I mean, how did they? or five times. Like, how did they fail so badly with these twins? Like, their their children their older children are are such, like... I mean, again, like, it's not good that they're this miserable and, yeah you know...

Speaker: religious and obsessed with their own suffering but the the twins have they really drop the ball on them they just stop caring i think they just let black Philip raise the twins and that's why they suck yeah yeah this is when they all accuse Thomason of being a witch yep and they're like okay we'll pray with us and they're all they all start praying over um yep uh his uh over Caleb and the twins sorry the the twin the twins pretend to not be able to pray and this is like They are literally trying to kill their sister. They, um, they're like, oh, I can't pray. I can't pray. Thomason's stopping me from praying. Oh, Thomason, why are you doing this? You little monsters.

Speaker: I don't think they realize the implications of what they're doing. I think they did. i think they're little evil little creatures. Um, and i wrote horrible little children. Caleb wakes up. for a moment and speaks of Jesus and ecstasy and like, I've come to your bosom, Jesus, and like yeah dies with a smile on his face. It's so fucking chilling. Yeah. I was to say, this is the time that Caleb take and decides is the excellent time to come back. Whether that be, cause there's also thoughts that it might be him possessed is we don't know. Is that him speaking or is that the witch speaking?

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. I mean mean, he doesn't accuse Thomason. Yeah. um But her father is like convinced that Thomas is a witch and he takes her outside and he's like, confess and we can prevent, we can heal you. And it's like, I'm not a witch. And he's like, your seven year old sister says you are. And I have no reason to disbelieve her.

Speaker: She only speaks the truth. Well, and she, and then she does, she tells like, she, he's like, speak the truth. And she goes, the truth is that you have doomed this family with your pride and you are a hypocrite for claiming to be all like holy and you lied to our mother about this whole thing. Oh, and the twins talk to a black goat.

Speaker: Maybe they're the ones who are ah like, who are evil. Like they she turns on her on the twins because you have to, like you're trying to save your own life. Like her father would kill her. Yeah.

Speaker: And she's like, why did she talk to the ones talking a goat? Yeah, they're that shes she's the ones that talk to a black goat. And so they go in there and he immediately threatens to kill the twins. He's like, okay.

Speaker: So he grabs Thomason and the twins and boards them up in the goat pen with Black Phillip. um And this this yeah this whole thing is like a microcosm for the the the Salem Witch Trials.

Speaker: And the Salem Witch Trials was a microcosm of the um ah oh the the the Blacklist movement.

Speaker: uh well yeah yeah for sure i mean any kind of um know lots of witch hunts uh abound yes um so they're they're burying caleb there's this shot of where of of we don't see her jump in but it's just this shot of kate like in the grave with her child her child's corpse yeah at least she got that one's corpse This is when William confesses to Kate. He's like, everything is my fault. Oh, no, yes oh he's not even confessing to her. oh He's alone. He's out because when he gets frustrated, he chops wood. So he just goes out and he just starts chopping wood. And this is the moment that he goes, it's all my fault, to which I screamed at the TV, yes. Yes, it is. It is.

Speaker: Um, ah he's like, I brought them here to die. This is my pride. Dispose of me how thou wilt, but save my children. They cannot tame their natural evil. Jesus fucking Christ.

Speaker: Is this when we get, oh, no, i we don't get one. He says, this is where I beg thee that I have not damned my family. Kate, uh, sees, has this vision of, um, Caleb holding Samuel with this red blanket. Yeah.

Speaker: And he says, I have bought a book for you, mother. do you see the book that I've brought you? And she's like, yes, yes. And ah she takes Samuel she and she starts to nurse him. Yeah. me But it's not really Samuel.

Speaker: And then we cut to the kids in the goat pen and like something is like on top of the pen, like someone's trying to get in and they're like, what is this? And then there's this, that old like crone is like, she seems to be biting the goat, like the side the goat. Yeah, like the goat's udders.

Speaker: it's it It didn't look like it was, she was, is that what she's doing? i It's very dark. now Yeah, you can't really tell what she's doing, but she's doing something to a goat. Maybe she's milking it, but she's got her her her face. it looks I thought she was biting into its side while she was milking the goat, but I could be wrong. But the goat was still standing, but it was fine.

Speaker: Yeah, yeah. It's not Black Phillip. It's one of the lady goats. Yeah. And she's like, she's Maybe she's like drinking its blood or something. Yeah. And the kids are like they like staring at her and then she turns around and like like hisses and laughs at them and she doesn't have any teeth and it's just it's absolutely terrifying. Yeah. And then we cut to Kate.

Speaker: who is holding this red blanket with a crow on it, who's just like pecking at her nipples. Owie. Awful. Owie. And she's just like happy crying as this is happening. Yeah. Oh yeah. She's laughing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: And then William, the next morning, like He wakes up and like Kate's nightgown is like stained with blood at her breasts. and he he goes outside and sees the goat pen and the goats are slaughtered. The pen is destroyed and Thomason is there unharmed asleep. Yep. She's the only one who survived yet again. She's a witch.

Speaker: We don't see the twins. Yeah. We don't know what happened to the twins. Yeah. Yeah. um And he is walking toward them and immediately gets gored by Black Phillip, like right in the stomach. yeah And he tries to to reach for a hatchet and he says, corruption, thou art thy father.

Speaker: And he is rammed into the wood pile, which is huge, like this comically large wood pile next to the house. hes Anytime he's frustrated, he chops wood. And this man is frustrated throughout this entire film.

Speaker: And he dies and Thomason wakes up and goes is like going toward her her father's corpse and her mother attacks her. Yeah. um Saying she's a witch. She's like the sluttish looks to your brother. You killed my children. You killed my father. And she's like going to strangle her daughter to death.

Speaker: And Thomason grabs like a knife and like cuts her in the face um to try to get her to stop. And her mother again tries to kill her. So she like kills her mom, like stabs her. She has choice. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. There's no choice.

Speaker: Yeah. And then we get the really like, soothing, like, well, not soothing, but like the, the post like fighting for your life scene where she comes in and she's just like, well, I'm covered in blood and I have this whole farm to myself.

Speaker: Well, she takes off her corset is the first thing she does. She takes off and she just sits down at a chair and falls asleep. Takes a little nap. And that's exactly what I was just like, you know what I would do in this situation? I take a little nap.

Speaker: take a little nap. Yeah, you gotta take nap after you kill your mom. Yeah. Yeah, take a little nap. You have the whole house to yourself? Take a little nap. Yeah, take a little nap. You don't need to wear Corson anymore. There's nobody there. Exactly. Take a little nap.

Speaker: Yeah, so it's this very much like, it reminded me of a lot of Herzog movies, like man consumed by the wild kind of thing. There's no like nature will destroy you. Like you cannot survive alone without community in the, in the world because it's, it's just, it's too hostile. Right. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. So she hears these chimes and at night and she, she follows the chimes and she meets black Phillip. Yeah. And,

Speaker: Black Phillip leads her into the the little goat pen. And ah we don't see him we don't see him talk, like which is important. like I think it would have been silly. It would have been very silly. This is not babe. Even if he hadn't moved his mouth, even if it was just a shot of him with the voice out loud, I think it would have been too silly. Yeah.

Speaker: But she's like, I conjure thee, Black Phillip, speak to me. And it's the shot stays on her the whole time, but we do hear his voice. And we see him sort of morph into a man. Oh yeah, big time. But it stays on her.

Speaker: sexy man. He says, what dost thou want? And she says, what canst thou give? And he says, wouldst thou like the taste of butter? A pretty dress? Wouldst thou like to live deliciously? Yeah.

Speaker: Slutty black Philip. And she says, yes. and way then we And then as we cut back around the fire, we kind of see boots with spurs walking. And then we see this like black gloved hand on her shoulder. And she he says, would you like to see the world? Yeah. do And she says, yes. And she he says, do you see this book before thee? And then there's there's like a book.

Speaker: And he says, remove thy shift. And like she takes off her like shift. And says i she says, I can't write my name. And he says, I will guide thy hand. Yeah. And then we cut to her walking into the forest naked.

Speaker: And with Black Phillip is like leading her and we hear the voices of the women. He's a goat again. Yes. We hear the voices of the women. um And there's a bunch of naked women by a fire. And it's it's very reminiscent of Goya, you know, the painting, which is white yeah by Goya. I think that was sort of the point of the the shot.

Speaker: Yeah, 100%. Yeah. And it it is this there's this ah ecstasy. Like, they're all, like like, chanting and screaming and laughing and- um Dancing, and then they start some might say. Dancing.

Speaker: Yeah, they're dancers. They're Japanese buto dancers in real life. Oh, I did not know that. Yeah, so they're all dancing and they start to fly and then it's just, it's it's close on her face and then she starts to rise up and she's laughing and we cut to the scene of all of them raising into the sky. And the end.

Speaker: The end. And then you get the yeah the post credits um little card which says that the it was inspired by folklore and journals and um a lot of other historical texts of the time. And I mean, all of the dialogue was taken from journals written around the time. i mean It's not historically accurate, obviously. But It's pretty, the the dialogue is is pretty historically accurate for the for the time. yeah i mean Exactly. Much more so than most movies you're going to see. Yeah, yeah which I thought was so cool. So, so cool.

Speaker: I really enjoyed this movie. It's so fucking good. It's it's so fucking good. One of my favorite horror movies of all time. it's It's one of those things that like, it's so oppressive. Yeah. And...

Speaker: And like just dreadful the whole time. And then it ends with this moment of like ecstasy, like this moment of just like literally ascending into the sky. Like you have had one of the worst lives possible for for people to have for so long. You've lived in suffering and privation and you're starving to death. And then finally you have like release from this, this patriarchy, from this oppressive society, from this, this religion that does nothing to save you and only hurts you for your entire life. And then finally you're, you're free. It's, it's beautiful. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. I loved it. It was great. I'd never seen it before. So, um, excellent film. Uh, any other thoughts, feelings, opinions? um ah Yeah, it's it's it's beautiful. i don't I don't like any of his other movies as much as this one. I do. I like The Lighthouse. um I have not seen The Northman, and I don't like Nosferatu. So I need to see The Northman, I suppose. People do like it. yeah But this is definitely my favorite of his. um This is my favorite of the of the modern horror, like art horror, yeah elevated horror, as they called it. ah Boom. i am I am famously not a fan of Hereditary movies.

Speaker: yeah that's that's a very that's a very hot take um everybody loves hereditary i don't care about i don't care for hereditary uh this is my like modern horror like masterpiece yeah um this is the one that i love the most for sure yeah for the last like you know 15 years or so yeah yeah um oh wait it fall it follows is great too i love it follows as well oh yeah i like this more probably yeah Yeah. um I'd say they're on par for me. I really, really like It Follows. I think It Follows is like, and I'm sure we'll do it on the pod. ah yeah

Speaker: with It's very different. It's very, very different. yeah Is it also age twenty four I don't know. Have you seen it at the end of Oak Street? No, I haven't.

Speaker: It's the writer-director of It Follows. Oh, okay. Is that the one where they're all stuck in their houses? Yeah. yeah I don't want to see that.

Speaker: No, it's, it's Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor and their neighborhood is transplanted into the like Cretaceous period. Like there's, it's dinosaurs in the neighborhood. Oh, okay. I'm, I'm getting that confused with the other cul-de-sac movie where they're all stuck in their houses and they can't leave.

Speaker: No, that's not what that is. yeah. i don't know what you're thinking of. That sounds familiar, but I don't know what that is. No, this is, this is like an eighties adventure family movie. Oh, this is like, it's, it's, I loved it. It's, yeah it's really fun. It's, it's goofy. Um, like very, it's set in the eighties. It's very, it's very like Spielberg. Oh, I love Eighties adventure movie. It's, I, I thought it was great. Yeah. Oh, okay. I'll have to keep, I'll have to give that a little watch. Um. It'll be streaming soon, I think.

Speaker: Yeah. Well, what are we doing next week? Next week. I'm going to scare the pants off you, Emma. Yeah. Oh no. Last year you vetoed this movie. You were like too scaly. And I'm like, can you watch it next year? And you're like, yes. So we are watching again, one of my favorite horror movies, um the all female cast of the descent. We love ladies in charge.

Speaker: Yeah, it's there. There there is there there. There are there's a few shots of men. I think maybe even there's like a flashback where there's a scene with a man. But yeah most of the movie is all women. Yeah, I'm going to have to watch this with all of my windows open.

Speaker: It is. i think this movie is legitimately scary. i mean, but here's the thing about this movie is you don't have to be scared because you just don't need to go into a cave ever. Like, don't explore a cave and you'll be fine. But what if you have to go in a cave, Katie?

Speaker: Why would you have to go in a cave? how do to you Organize your life in a way where you don't have to go into a cave. i mean, like, listen, you could visit, you could visit a cave. You could visit, you know, Mammoth Cave in Kentucky and like stay in the areas that are, you know, explored.

Speaker: This is an unexplored cave. These women randomly find in North Carolina and they're like, oh, we're going to go into this cave. Like, great idea, guys. What is it? Spelunking? Is that what they're doing? but No, they're caving. Spelunking is cave diving where you're like underwater in the cave. yeah Oh yeah. Spelunking terrifies me. I can't do it.

Speaker: Yeah. um I have done it once and it was very scary. I never. No. You chose to go into a cave. I was at camp.

Speaker: You just told me don't go into a cave. Anyways, ah we'll we'll get more into cave lore next time. ah All right. Shall we outro? Let's outro.
