Transcript

Speaker: Well, I've painted our entryway this week. I saw it. Looks nice. Yeah, thank you so very much. I listened to an entire audiobook, which was great for my book club. Highly recommend.

Speaker: It's like if you wanted a sexier version of Hip Hop Demon Hunters, but you made it white.

Speaker: So maybe like... not but it's about demon hunter and a demon and great okay but they're not k-pop stars they're not k-pop stars okay and it's kind of like if you put zodiac academy and k-pop demon hunters and had them make a baby so it's more like buffy the vampire slayer than k-pop demon hunters yeah i guess yeah i guess but like i don't know it just felt really k-pop demon hunter-y but she's not a pop star at all no okay okay

Speaker: kind of the central conceit of K-pop Demon Hunters is that they're pop stars. know! Okay. K-pop Demon Hunters just announced releasing on the Criterion Collection on Blu-ray in November.

Speaker: Yeah. Oh my god. Do I need to buy that? Like, they have a they have a deal with Netflix, so they's so because Netflix is not going to produce Blu-rays of the movies that are now exclusive to Netflix. So they have like a bunch of Netflix movies that are like, you know, things that people might want to buy. I've been releasing Criterion. So I think that's great. Yeah. Good for them. That is great. We love, we love physical media.

Speaker: Yeah. Love physical media here. And we're going to have to rely on it soon. Oh, very soon. oh my days. Uh, boy, oh boy. I mean like case in point, when you move and you don't have internet, you got to buy some DVDs.

Speaker: Or until the oligarchs start deleting stuff ah stuff to um to have more ah more server space for world-destroying AI. Yep. Yep. And Emma, that leads me to Emma's Apology Corner. Emma's Apology Corner. Emma's Apology

Speaker: The server that we use... To make these wonderful episodes, Zencaster had a big upgrade and their big upgrade was very confusing for Emma, who was the editor of this last week's episode, which was voicemails for Isabel.

Speaker: And Emma in her painting frenzy, thought I'm not going to explore other options. I'm just going lean into it. So we try to post episodes by midnight on Sunday.

Speaker: yeah And sometimes we miss that deadline. A lot of the time. Yeah. Sometimes, yeah. It doesn't happen because, you know, life happens. And ah very, very rarely have we released an episode after...

Speaker: Sunday, you know, it's usually at some time in the evening on Sunday at the very latest. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Um, but, uh, I had done the editing. I just hadn't like done all the things to like upload it to our server. and I just hit my voice thingy.

Speaker: and um And so then i didn't realize that Zencaster's new upgrade was so complicated. And so I was trying to do it like last minute, like I always do and just be like, bloop, here's a little blurb. And then here's the thing. And then I let it like upload it takes a minute and then i post it.

Speaker: But ah the new upgrade is all ai And there came a point where it was like, do you want me to just write your blurb for you? And I was like, fuck yeah.

Speaker: And then I walked away. i just said, sure. and i am Failure of integrity, Emma. And it was like, here's the blurb. Didn't like read it. Just was like, cool, post.

Speaker: ah And walked away. And um then get a text from Katie where my guilt immediately exploded, saying, surely you didn't have a high, right?

Speaker: i The blurb for our episode. Surely you wouldn't do that to me. Surely you wouldn't. And had swallow text back, Womp and text back wampwamp

Speaker: um we ah We will... um We promise to you, our listeners, that we will not use AI to to write blurbs or or anything related to the podcast, really. Indeed. Zencaster tries to force a lot of AI stuff on us because every...

Speaker: website is going all in on AI and doing as much as they can to try to, um, to get you to, to use their, their AI tools. And I at least am a hardliner.

Speaker: Um, uh, I'm not going to do it. So, um, I'm, I'm a little bit more loosey goosey because I'm an idiot, but don't be like me. True.

Speaker: Don't be an Emma, be a Katie in this world. oh Don't an Emma, be Katie. I don't want to don't i dont want to frame it like that. I just, I think it's important to not um mix, like, I mean, it might be a stretch to call what we're doing Business with pleasure.

Speaker: an artistic pursuit. Yes. I mean, it's the most artistic pursuing I've done all year. So, um yeah but yeah. Yeah. so it's just, it's important to me that i I don't want to, I don't want to be involved in it much like in the same way that I'm a vegetarian, you know, my mother yeah argues with me a lot. She's like well, they're going to kill the cows anyway. I'm like, yeah, but I'm not involved in it this way. I don't want to personally be involved in the, in the meat. Yeah.

Speaker: industry and I don't want to be involved in the AI industry either. So, um, for me, it's important and I'm not trying to, to, to claim claim a moral high ground or anything. And if people use chat GPT and a lot of people at work are required to now, um, because it's a, um,

Speaker: it's ah It's a moving ah window that, yes um you know, companies will do anything to ah to make as much money as possible. and And any shortcut that they can make, they will, regardless on the repercussions on the environment and on the economy and on people. Yep.

Speaker: Yep. And here's the thing. When you Google something, you're strong-armed into using AI. which is why. You don't really get a choice or not. I would recommend something called DuckDuckGo, which is a search engine and web browser that you can use that does not use AI.

Speaker: Ah, and then you have to use your brain. Yeah. And like click on things. So, yeah, so I'm not scolding anybody for using AI and I'm not trying to say that I'm better than you. promise I'm much worse. I understand. In many ways, but I don't want to involve AI. As soon as you texted me, I felt so fucking guilty. was like, oh, Emma. Not my intention.

Speaker: And Katie's a writer. No, it wasn't your intention, but it's because I knew what I did was wrong, Katie. It's because I knew what I did was wrong. It's like sneaking out in high school and you get caught. Like, I knew what I was doing was wrong and I still did it anyways for the convenience and for that thrill.

Speaker: of just pressing play just for the thrill of pressing go and being able to go back to my work on the other thing is that like anybody who who listens to it would immediately know like the other thing is that it sucked like the yeah the the ai description is terrible like yeah it was like voicemails for isabel or stalking question mark and i was like yeah that's not great but i'm still gonna press play but It's like when it like I've looked at the the clips it wants to generate. It's like AI generated clips and it's like just the stupidest bullshit like you can imagine. like

Speaker: Like text question like over the video clip. It's like you can post this directly to Instagram. That sounds terrible, man.

Speaker: Goodness gracious. Anyway. Companies cutting costs and trying to make things worse. Famously featured in today's film.

Speaker: sure That's right, guys. You guessed it. This is Go Get Your Girl. This is the podcast where Emma and then Katie are just watching two of their fellow employees at a book publisher.

Speaker: I'm casting us as the two weird sidekick characters that don't ri I imagine have a bigger role in the book than in the movie. ah I don't even know what characters you're talking about.

Speaker: curly hair girl and um guy who writes on his shirt go lucy but then when he lifts it up he lifts up both shirts oh yeah yeah yeah okay yeah yeah yeah we're the we're the the the weirdo um and tertiary characters got it yeah we're we're those weirdos and we're just watching them and they are fighting all the time despite all of our hr complaints because it is disrupting our work Boy, oh boy, are we piling up those HR complaints about these too. So much so that the HR lady hates them.

Speaker: um But really, it's just sexual tension. And um then they make out and they try to fight it. ah Well, one of them tries to fight it.

Speaker: And the other one is like, I don't understand why you're fighting this. And um there's also a new job that they're both competing for. And so it gets complicated and messy. And Along the way, there's a wedding and then we wrap it all up in a stupid fucking little bow in two seconds. ah I really hated the ending of this movie. I'm sorry. We will get into this. I really hated the ending of this movie. That's right, guys. I'm Emma.

Speaker: And I'm Katie. And today we are talking about the 2021 movie, The Game. yeah is directed by peter hutchings who directed Which Brings Me to You, which is another Lucy Hale rom-com.

Speaker: um And then Then Came You, which is another... rom-com um ah and then it's written by christina mengert who's written a movie called rhymes with banana that is really her only other credit and this movie is based on oh both also the two of them the screenwriter and the director are working on their new movie that comes out maybe next year is an adaptation of you're gonna like this it happened one summer

Speaker: Which I didn't finish reading because I didn't like it, but you liked loved it. Maybe I liked the movie starring Nina Dobrev and ty Tyler Hocklin. Nina Dobrev is playing the lead in It Happened One Summer? Nina Dobrev, yeah. Nina Dobrev and Tyler Hocklin, yeah.

Speaker: Which i like But the character is famously blonde. She's supposed to be like a Paris Hilton. Maybe she'll be blonde. I don't know.

Speaker: thing Famous Bulgarian blondes. um famous So this is based on a book by Sally Thorne, which I have read. and I think you have not read it. I have not read it. I really like Sally Thorne a lot. She yeah wrote um she wrote three really fun rom-com books. She's Australian um in the early 2010s. And she hasn't written anything in like six years, which is a very long time for a rom-com book.

Speaker: book writer yeah usually these books come out like every year you know yeah like multiple a year so i don't know if she's like you know retired or like doing something else or whatever but you know they were all bestsellers like this one the most so i think but yeah um especially in australia she's like a you know um very popular writer um and this movie came out i guess like right when i had finished reading the book so oh nice well yeah that worked out really well It's like constantly on all of my ah recommended to read book lists. Yeah. And it's been on my list for a while um because ah much like how Katie has a famous trope in rom-com books, I've got a famous trope too. And that is enemies to lovers, baby. I love that fucking tension. Have them fight until they make out. I want them to fight so close to each other's faces that they're just sucking face. I want them to have sex like it's a revenge on the other person.

Speaker: oh my. I love An enemies to lovers. i i I'm obsessed with it. So, like, I was so excited to watch this movie. And like I said, 85 to 90% of this movie, I was all in, baby. ah Give me that sexual tension. I sat there with my jaw on the floor for a lot of it, um especially whenever he picks her up and she makes a little noise and he goes, oh, what that noise? i was like, ah!

Speaker: Yeah. This movie is sexy. It is sexy. This is one of the the first um that I'm aware of like movies made out of the boom of like steamy rom-coms that came in like the 2010s. And it really carries through on that on that promise. um so um So I appreciate that. Yeah. theres um I mean, they've started to do a lot more. And I think the success of Anyone But You, which is not based on a book, but, you know, was very successful in theaters, has really...

Speaker: you know, open the door for a lot more of these movies to be made. So I think that even though I don't like anyone but you, yeah i do appreciate it for um for allowing more movies to be considered.

Speaker: We love it. We love it. For financial success. Yeah. Exactly. This this is about a publishing company. Mm-hmm. The Bexleys and the Gammons um are two different publishing companies that merged.

Speaker: The Bexleys, um run by Corbin Bernson, who's Mr. Bexley, who's an idiot.

Speaker: writes a lot of, like, I mean, publishes a lot of, like, um pop culture biographies. Yeah. And, um like like, you know, trashy kind of, you know. Ghostwritten autobiography of a housewife situation. Yes, yes. Stuff like that.

Speaker: Reality star stuff. um Yeah. And the Gammons, which are, like, which publish, like, literature. um Like, what they would call... um ah you know, new fiction, stuff like that. Yeah.

Speaker: Like books. And Sakina Jaffrey is, um I don't know if her last name is Gammon or she's just the person who runs that publishing company. We don't, I don't think we know her last name. Yeah. um But Corbin Bernstein is explicitly a last name Bexley. So the company's merged and they're kind of like along these two different sides. Like there are Bexleys and there are Gammons. Yes. And Lucy Hale's character, whose character's name is Lucy in this movie,

Speaker: um Which I love. I was like, love a convenient name. Yeah, is a gammon. And um did I write down the actor who plays Josh? I did not recognize that man.

Speaker: is in stuff. um Let's find out together. Like the guy who's the head of... is actually is the dad from psych i knew who that was that's corbin bernson yeah he's i was so excited i was like dad from psych hello name is austin stowell he is known for his roles in dolphintail dolphin tail dolphin tail 2 with lash okay bridge of spies he was in catch 22 the tv version 2019 and he is now cast as the young special agent leroy jethro gibbs in the prequel series NCIS Origins. So my mom is going to know who this guy

Speaker: What? They're doing a prequel to NCIS? Well, it's in its third season already, so they've done it for while. What? They're doing a prequel to NCIS? Listen, listen.

Speaker: CBS. We've had this conversation before. Again, the most popular shows on television are some shit you've never heard of that old people love and it's on CBS. Oh my days. Like they really ran out of cities that fast? Um, I don't know what to tell you. You know, I've never seen an episode of NCIS. It's my mom's favorite show. She tells me about it all the time. She describes episodes in detail to me. Okay.

Speaker: Um, I, I just, I just know I would not be able to get through an episode of it. I don't, i don't know what to tell you. Um, but you have on with the gym on the back, in the background. She's always asking like, oh, did you watch this? Did you watch this? And it's all the same show. Like it's all the same show with the numbers filed off. It's like, I don't watch shows about like people investigating crimes. I just, I don't watch any of them.

Speaker: I don't care about it. oh little segue though. i do. um And I watched um this series. I started this series called Friends That Kill the other day on Netflix. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Yep. um And the first episode is like about this um group in the 80s and one of their friends shoots another friend and it's a mystery of finding out like who was. And then the second one is, and it's like really sad because these are all, it's a true crime doc. So like, it's hard for me to like.

Speaker: Oh, this is not a, this is not a a show. It's a, it's a documentary. It's a true crime documentary. Okay. Yeah. Like series. And so like, it's hard for me to like, be like, this was so funny in the show. Cause it's really sad because somebody actually got murdered.

Speaker: Right, right, right. But it takes place at. a college theater department. Oh no. Uh-huh.

Speaker: And the group of suspects were all in Fiddler on the Roof together. Oh, okay. And so they're using these clips of Fiddler on the Roof as like these like dramatic shots. And I'm like, there's... That sounds like a parody. That sounds like yeah American Vandal style. like i i was like, I feel like there's so many other shots you could use besides... And then...

Speaker: du du and then hum um um she was stabbed the next day. it goes to negative and like zooms in Tevye. Which is what it did. Like pretty much. It like, like slowed it down and put it like her, like play she was the fiddler. yeah And um they like slowed her down walking up to Tevye. And it's like a college production um at like, not like Juilliard or anything. So it's like not well-funded. So Tevye is like a 19-year-old. In like a bad beard. And yeah it's just sort of like I had to i had to like take minute and be like, this person's actually dead. Don't laugh. Don't laugh. Don't laugh. Don't laugh. Don't laugh.

Speaker: um Because it was really sad. But it just like, why did production do that? I mean, it's it's just how you make money. you know? Like, it's there's a formula that you follow. um and There is like a least sexy formula.

Speaker: story about murder. It is something that revolves around Fiddler on the Roof. One of what are the least sexy Broadway musicals, really. Right?

Speaker: And not ah not a particularly sexy genre, to be to be honest. No! Yeah! Like... Oh, sorry. i had to share that. And I was just like, I wanted to text so many people a clip of it, but I was like, no, Emma, that's so disrespectful to the dead.

Speaker: It is disrespectful to the dead. Yes. Um, ah yes. So we're not even one second into this movie. Um, ah, yes. Typical us. Lucy and Josh, um, work as sis.

Speaker: I don't think they're assistants. I think they're they have they're like some sort of job. um ah and they're in this But they're in the same room and their desks face each other. The room is like divided like ah like twins bedroom. um yeah You know, where there's like one thing on one side and one thing on the other. like they They do a lot of these opposite shots where you see his like it's It's silly because like production design is a little silly because there's nothing in the room yeah on either of those. It's very clean and immaculate.

Speaker: But like in the framed shot behind him, there's like filing cabinets and stuff. Yeah. and It's all very clean. It's all gray. It's all like uniform. And then behind her is like a cute bookshelf with lots of like stuff on it. and Yeah.

Speaker: And little like quirky knickknacks and stuff. if you were to take that camera and pan over, there'd be nothing there. Like there's nothing in the rest of the room. Yeah. It's just their little like Invisible pod.

Speaker: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's which you know it's a choice. like It's a yeah it's a intentional, but it is it is silly when you notice it. um And they stare at each other all day, basically. And yes they have these little intimidation games. They play with one another. um Where, you know, they morally don't like the other one yeah based on what they're they' they've organized their life around. Where Lucy has organized her life around being quirky and you know good literature and you know um she's pursuing art and all of that and she's a people pleaser yes yeah um she lets the people walk all over her her like because i know she's not an assistant because there's that woman who works for her right yeah who is asking her extensions on deadlines and stuff she's like oh i've got this happening i've got this happening and lucy always lets her do whatever she wants and and she walks all over her and so yeah

Speaker: um He doesn't respect her for that. And she um she thinks that he is purely money-focused and yeah cares nothing about content um or artistic content and what they're actually producing as long as yeah it's successful and makes money. And she doesn't respect him. Yeah.

Speaker: for that. And that's only partly true of him. Um, because we'll we'll get into it. Yeah. And she constantly is like calling him American psycho and yes, well, he kind of is. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: Cause he's like super clean and obsessed with money, which is essentially, what is it? Patrick Bates? Patrick Bateman, yes. Patrick Bateman. I mean, it is very, like, he has all of his things organized very, like, rigidly on his desk and everything. um I wrote the note, her work outfits are so great. I love them. And the second that I wrote that, he said, you dress like an elementary school librarian. Well, well and I feel like we're both Lucy.

Speaker: boy oh boy. i related a lot to her character, minus the Smurf thing. The Smurfs thing was a choice. And like her little Smurf fanfic that she writes, also a choice. Yeah, it was crazy. Yeah. um It's Anna. She's writing an Anna Karenina themed Smurfs fanfic. Yeah. Oh God.

Speaker: Why? Why? Because it's funny. Um... That was something that in the writer's room, it was um it was definitely Pride and Prejudice. And somebody in the writing and somebody like had a script note. It's like, you know, we can jazz this up a bit. We can make it Anna Karenina. That's funnier. and there right But then it doesn't make sense because later on, she's gifted a copy of Pride and Prejudice by her boss.

Speaker: And i was like, well, that's random. That's like classic rom-com stuff. It's classic rom-com stuff. you know there's yeah There's no book more beloved by rom-com protagonists than Pride and Prejudice. True.

Speaker: Well, and as soon as she gifted it to her, I was like, oh my god, that's like this movie. Is this? What's the the what Jennifer Lopez rom-com where she gets a quotation first edition of The Odyssey?

Speaker: What? What movie is that? I don't remember. on.

Speaker: The boy next door, Jennifer Lopez's character, a high school literature teacher, is infamously gifted a, quote, first edition of the Iliad, not the Odyssey. The Iliad. How is that even possible? Don't it. Which her teenage neighbor claims he bought for a dollar at a garage sale.

Speaker: Insane. Because the Iliad is obviously, you know, um an oral tradition that's yeah thousands of years old and it's going to a first edition. first edition. Well, I mean, you could have a first edition of whatever publisher printed yeah version. I mean, there's lots of first editions. You could have like, you know, Bloomsbury 1911 first edition of the Iliad, I suppose. Yeah, but I don't think that's what they were going for in that script. Yeah. We will watch it eventually, probably.

Speaker: We probably will. um Anyway, the two of them are just eye-fucking the whole first entire time like third of this movie. um She's really into lipstick. and and i wrote Lots of lipstick stuff.

Speaker: So much lipstick stuff. I mean, Lucy Hale herself is a short queen. It works for her. like Lipstick is good for her. like i can't like My complexion lipstick looks weird. like I have to wear like a really dark lip, I feel. ah i love a lipstick, but I also am... basically translucent.

Speaker: so So there's a new job coming up. Basically, Bexley and Gammon have decided that they are going to create a new position, which is going to be managing director that will report to the two of them, but be in charge of operations of the whole thing.

Speaker: And it's going to unify the company is the idea. that They need to come up with a new plan to try to unify this this company. And this person is going to direct the operations of this company moving forward.

Speaker: Because not just them, but like everybody is like butting heads. Yes, yes. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. And there's a lot more of that in the book. Again, I read this book, you know, so five years ago at least. So not a lot that I remember um of the differences between the book and the movie. 2021 was not that long ago.

Speaker: Nope. I refuse. It was five years ago. was straight up five years ago. Nope. um So there's a character called Daniel who is played by, did you notice this? um ah It is played by Damon Dauno? Damon Dauno? don't know how you say his name. He familiar.

Speaker: He is the original Orpheus from Hadestown. Really? From the off-Broadway one. Yes, the voice of an angel who did the Broadway Oklahoma, which is why he couldn't be in the Broadway version of Hadestown. That's why he looked familiar. And they replace him. Yeah.

Speaker: oh he's great um uh i really know and it's ah it's a really good part as written too for that kind of character because it's not what other rom-coms would do so he's the baxter in this movie he's the baxter but then also becomes the best friend Yes, it's it's great. Yeah. It's just, yeah. I love it. he has a crush on her. Yeah.

Speaker: I said Josh calls her shortcake, which is definitely flirting with her. How is it not? like Yeah. They are obviously flirting with each other. Everyone can see it except for the two of them. Yeah, exactly. Oh, she doesn't have any friends. She lies to her mom on the phone about it. know.

Speaker: It's Thanksgiving. It's Thanksgiving. yeah this movie runs thanks for thanksgiving Thanksgiving to New Year's is the timeline for this book basically movie basically um and it's set in New York yes it is set in New York even though he drove a lot for living in New York I was like they establish pretty early on that it's in New York yes it was filmed in New York too which is yeah I was surprised by because there's not a lot of exteriors yeah you would think but I mean they probably just use a lot of like Well, it was also 2020, 2021, so. Oh, there's probably so many office buildings that were empty that they were like, what you and because of COVID, there was probably a lot of filming restrictions and stuff, yeah.

Speaker: Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, yeah. And then i she has a sex dream on the eve of Thanksgiving.

Speaker: Which is classic steamy rom-com trope. Classic. So you're reading a steamy rom-com. You know it's going to be, you like, you can't have the characters get together that early. Exactly. But you need a sex scene early on. So one of the characters has a sex dream about the other person. That way yeah you get a sex scene in early. yep And you don't, you know, mess up any of your, your character stuff. It's like, yeah. And you create this like bubbling sexual tension. That's like about to spill over because it's like in her subconscious. And she lies to him about it. Cause she was just like, she comes in super sexy with like, fuck me heels. And like, who would wear stilettos to work?

Speaker: Which she can't walk in because she's a rom-com protagonist. If there's one thing about rom-com protagonists is we, I mean, they can't walk in heels. Exactly. We, I mean, they just keep falling over all the time because we're so, they are so clumsy. Yes.

Speaker: um I think of of Amy Poehler falling down the stairs every time now. um He's coming, but I look like a chimney sweep. Yeah. um That's, uh...

Speaker: They came together yeah for listeners. You can go back and listen to that episode. It's great. if you want A parody of rom-coms. Laugh a bunch about. if you want to hear us just reiterate jokes that happen in a movie.

Speaker: Just constantly repeating jokes. Go listen to that episode. ah Great podcasting. And he immediately is like, you had a sex dream. And then she makes some HR violations.

Speaker: She lies about having a date and he doesn't believe her. And she made if she manipulates Daniel into taking her out because she knows he has a crush on her.

Speaker: Yeah, and she doesn't really like have any like feelings towards him. like She likes him, but she doesn't like him. But then she's just like, well, I gotta do this. And so then they go and they find out they have a lot of stuff in common. So their friendship sort of grows and she tries to convince herself that it's more romantic than it actually is. Because she refuses to acknowledge the sexual tension between her And because she doesn't, she has a moral problem with him, which is realistic. Like that's totally true. Like you can have like a physical attraction to somebody is kind of unintentional, yeah but a, a moral repulsion to someone's character is, you know, not something that you can overlook usually.

Speaker: Exactly. Despite, you know, some famous pairings to the contrary. She spies on his planner and she sees these little symbols that he's written on his planner. Yeah.

Speaker: She thinks it has to do with his. Oh, so it should be noted that um in order to get the job after the holiday, after the new year, the um boss, the board will come together and listen to all the applicants pitches for, you know, they have some sort of like business plan or like pitch or something that they have to present. Yeah. Like what, what fun, exciting thing can you bring to the company if we make you managing director again? Exactly. Exactly. And so like they're both competing for this job and because both of their bosses want them to have it. And so they um they constantly are like bickering about how like, you know, if you take this job, if one of us gets the job, the other one's going to quit because we just can't yeah be in the same building. They make a deal that if whichever one of them gets the job, the other will quit.

Speaker: Yeah. So. um So, yeah. So they're they're just sort of like um constantly trying to snoop on the other's plans and so she looks at his planner thinking she's gonna get like a leg up on his like business plan but there's a lot of weird symbols in the margins it's like doesn't make sense and she's like even more american psycho woof yeah um this is uh the same day they're about she's he says that he is also going to be at the bar at the same time as her date so yeah he doesn't believe her he wants to get to see her there with her date

Speaker: They're going in the elevator down in the elevator together. It's pouring down rain. And he stops the elevator and then they make out, which... Yeah. Yeah. Well, he stops the elevator and he does that super sexy thing that they do in rom-com books, which is like, what are we doing?

Speaker: I mean, that's happened in real life. Like, have you never had a what are we doing conversation in real life? Because I certainly have. What are we doing? I mean, maybe with Charlie once. And that's how this happened. Yeah.

Speaker: No, I've definitely had like, what are we doing? Conversation with like, and then you, and then you have sex. Like that's what happens. it's Like it's what are what are we you doing? And then, yeah, exactly. Yeah. That was me making out for the the listeners at home.

Speaker: I think everybody got it. Yeah. That's the classic sound of making out. Yeah. It doesn't sound like a minion at all. No.

Speaker: They make out. He drives her to the bar. um And then she goes in to meet ah Daniel. Yep. um He says, you look great wet. um And he he doesn't like the book. They have this whole conversation about her parents are strawberry farmers and his parents had a farm.

Speaker: He's sweet and awkward. Classic Baxter. Yeah. yeah wrote And they they just have a lot in common. Yeah. They do, yeah. And then the next day, she gets roses um that says, you're always beautiful. Yeah. Which she had made a comment about, you know, someone, about feeling beautiful or someone calling her beautiful. I don't remember exactly the context. Yeah, yeah, the flowers are...

Speaker: everybody knows except for her are obviously from josh not from daniel but she assumes they're from daniel because that's the guy she went on a date with and she texts him and he doesn't deny it just well he doesn't understand yeah so he says he's he's he's a little like you know socially awkward so i don't think that he's taking credit for something he didn't do he just doesn't understand what she means yeah he just doesn't get Because she does she doesn't say thanks for the flowers. She just says something like, you know, had a great time. And then she uses like a flower emoji. Yeah. She says, no, she says, yeah, she says, thank you, Rose, Rose, Rose, Rose. rose

Speaker: Yes, yes, yes. um Which he doesn't understand. Yeah. um but They have a team building exercise. It's just like 10 things I hate about you. Paintball. um And she and Josh are on the same team in paintball. And they are playing paintball. And she has a fever.

Speaker: Yeah. um Another classic rom-com trope. Oh, yeah. He has to take care of her. It's just like, um friends, we are people we meet on vacation. Yeah. It is. It's a lot like people being on vacation. It was very reminiscent of that. Yes. And so was just like, oh my god.

Speaker: cause She ah gets super sick. She throws up on him. Well, she gets shot super hard with a bunch of paywalls. Yes, that's true. yeah And then he's like trying to make sure that she's okay.

Speaker: um And she throws up on him in front of the whole company. And then he's like, time to go home. And so he takes her home. And she continues to throw up and he takes care of her so much so that he, um when she wakes up again, there's a strange, handsome man in her apartment and it's his brother, a doctor.

Speaker: um And he doesn't do anything doctoring. He writes her prescription. Yeah. We don't know what that's for. It could be for Oxycontin for all we know. Yeah, it's never really described what she has. It's some kind of yeah stomach flu, but she has 103 degree fever, which that doesn't seem good. Yeah, I was constantly like, what does she have? Can we please just tell me what she has? I'm worried for her well-being. and Because like then she see she like lifts up her shirt in one scene and And she's like covered in bruises on her stomach from the paintballs. And I'm like, is this some sort sort of like internal bleeding thing? Like, why are we looking this? No, because she was sick before she got hit by the paintballs. Again, he said you look feverish, like you're burning up before yeah they started the paintballs. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. Well, but still, ah it was just a lot of confusing things. And then we learned that his whole family are doctors and they start to bond a little bit by him taking care of her.

Speaker: And he decided not to become a doctor. He's the only one in his family that's not a doctor or surgeon. So that's the first little red flag of, well, sounds like somebody's not loved in their family. Yeah, it's very much... um it's ah it's another It's another trope. Like, this is a very trope-y story.

Speaker: Oh, yeah. Which doesn't necessarily make it bad, but it is... I think it's ah it's a good... it's It's good plays on all of these things. Like, yeah it's the damaged rich boy and the um quirky...

Speaker: She's not poor, but, you know, definitely, like, not not rich girl. Yeah. Is about as classic as it comes with this sort of thing. Exactly. And she thinks that he doesn't care because he has put up this facade of having to be successful because his parents, you know, think he's going to fail. Like, his whole family doesn't believe in him. yeah So he he just, he yeah, he he's a perfectionist.

Speaker: Yes, yes, because he has to be, yeah. Yeah. He sees all her Smurfs. He sees her Sleepysaurus pajama t-shirt. Her Sleepysaurus. And she wakes up and she goes, oh no, I'm in my Sleepysaurus. And I was like, relatable girl. Relatable.

Speaker: Um... He, um, oh yeah. The brother tells him he needs to come to his wedding. he hasn't RSVP'd for the wedding yet. So the brother's getting married at Christmas.

Speaker: Yep. And, um, he's like, you got to come to the wedding. Yeah. And he does not want to come to the wedding. And he like, there's so much like red flags in this conversation of just like, he's just like, look, I know it's awkward, but at the end of the day, your brother's getting married. You have to show up for him. And I was just like, Ooh, I bet, I bet I can see where this is going.

Speaker: Yeah. um Watching you pretend to hate that nickname is the highlight of my day is a pretty sexy thing to say to somebody. ah um And then she lets him know that she's noticed his shirt color order. He wears the same like five shirts in order every week, like dove gray, light gray, blue, true blue, whatever, et cetera. Yeah, yeah.

Speaker: Not something you do unless you like somebody. Exactly. And then she says, you only surprised me once, the elevator. And she says, I like the way you look at me. Yeah. yeah Hot. um ah He leaves her strawberry juice, which she said is what her mom used to give her when she was sick. Yeah. And a rose in handwriting that she recognizes and realizes that he was the one who sent the roses in the first place.

Speaker: No, she doesn't realize it yet. No, this is when she realizes it. Yeah. And she's like, the roses were from you. Yeah. I thought it wasn't until later, later in the movie that she realizes it. No, it's when he gets, it's after she gets back after being sick. Oh yeah. No, you're right. You're right. You're right. Okay. I'm picturing her in her apartment when she gets back to the office. Yeah. Yes. Yes.

Speaker: This is when ah her boss tells her that she never promoted her because she never asked. Yeah. And you're like, oh. And ah she gives him strawberries and she tells him that she owes him and says she'll go to his brother's wedding with him.

Speaker: Yeah. And be DD. Then she goes to dinner. oh well he says, go to dinner with Danny and kiss him. If it's better than our elevator kiss, then fine. I don't want to be some experiment before you settle down with Mr. Right.

Speaker: Yeah. I'm not going to put my hands on you again until you tell me that nobody kisses you like I do. Right? Jesus Christ. That was another moment that my jaw was on the floor and I was just like. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. That's super hot. Right? Yeah. And yeah, so she goes to the top of the Empire State Building with Danny and kisses him and doesn't feel anything, which is like, if that's not going to do it for you, then nothing will, you know? Right. So then she shows up like a stalker at um young Gibbs's apartment and yeah stands outside.

Speaker: and he comes home from the gym and he he sees her standing there and he's just like, well, well, well. Yeah. Yeah. um she says i'm not gonna date him anymore because and then he picks her up which is yeah like again like i'm six feet tall like it's gonna be difficult for somebody to pick me up um so i do i do like you know and like fantasizing about it yeah yeah exactly you know because just like i just want to be carried around like a baby just carry me around

Speaker: Just throw me around a little bit, you know? Yeah, that's all I want. That's all I want out of life. and because we're so wrong. It's not all I want out of life. But, you know It's just, it's it's never going happen.

Speaker: yeah. Because I'm not a tiny little baby. ah um He has a lot of books at his apartment, which is very hot. Oh, but this is that's the moment when he picks her up that she goes, oh! And he goes, oh, yeah sound. And then my jaw dropped even further. i like yeah It is like ah unattached from my ma my face at this point.

Speaker: Yeah, one thing that this movie does that a lot of the movies we do we talk about on this show doesn't do is that it is hot. A lot of rom-coms can be fairly tame. um Like a lot of rom-coms don't have a sex scene. A lot of rom-coms don't have, I mean, like Hallmark movies, they even kiss until the final scene. Yeah. This movie has a lot of sexual tension and a lot of, like, actual sex, which yeah is a real part of life and relationships, and I think is is is good to be to be shown on screen. Like, that's part of why we watch these things.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah, exactly. And not because we're sickos. Yeah, not because we're sickos and perverts. Yeah.

Speaker: <unk>s unrelated to us being sickos and perverts it's unrelated it's a separate thing um it's so funny because like um oh i don't know if you heard about this but um fucking what's his name will gluk the uh director of anyone but you and easy a and his most recent movie the rom-com that's out right now called one night only which is about this like this fictional world totalitarian like uh state where people are only allowed to have um uh sex unmarried set what am i trying to say unmarried unmarried people single people are only allowed to have sex one night a year one night a year sort of like apparently the movie but the movie is bad i've heard really bad things yeah about it but i've heard bad thing in an interview in an interview will gluck said that like he's like Gen Z is not interested in sex. And I think that the time for having sex in movies is over.

Speaker: um And could not disagree more, buddy. Like, right yes. I mean, there is, there is a thing and and more so not even Gen Z as much as like kids even younger than that on the internet. Yeah. Here's the thing.

Speaker: The Puritanes, we call them. The Puritanes. They're teenagers. Yeah. These are children. Yeah. um And like, we we don't need to, first of all, we don't need to be like marketing sexual things to to children in the first place. Yeah. And secondly, their kind of reaction to like an oversexed generation before them is understandable. Like everybody rejects the the things that that happened before them. Like these kids grew up in the age of 50 shades of gray. Yeah.

Speaker: But also, like, let them become adults and decide what they want before we start, like, marketing everything to them. Exactly. Exactly. That's super fucked up. And secondly, like, that is a loud minority on the internet. Like, 15-year-olds on Twitter should not be the focus of anyone's marketing strategy. Yeah. And... is not a representative body of generational trend, for sure. I can't, I mean, listen, I'm not a marketing expert, but I just, I just believe in my heart that that's not true. We can't listen to internet teens. We can't listen internet teens, nor should we.

Speaker: And I mean, like, you you take a look at, like, how things were marketed to us. Like, i grew up watching Girls Next Door. And, you know, like, of course it's going to be the complete opposite. The pendulum is going to swing the the hard other way.

Speaker: So just like, give it a generation, dude. Take a chill pill. And like the way that Gen Z is like is so like open with expressing like fluid sexuality and gender and you know ah yeah multiple relationship configurations and um asexuality and all sorts of things like that like I just...

Speaker: I can't believe that that that then the generation after that generation alpha would swing so hard the other way I mean, it's possible, but I just, I don't i don't think it's going to be quite as bad as as people are are predicting.

Speaker: Yeah, exactly. i think everyone just needs to take a chill pill. And like you said, stop marketing to 15 year olds on Twitter. Yes, 100%. Yes. So she's at his apartment. um Yeah. And then she realizes, she says, you are a gammon. You pretend to be a Bexley, but like you can't. So in an earlier scene, she was reading 100 Years of Solitude. And and she sees 100 Years of Solitude on his nightstand that he's reading the same book. um Which is so funny because on my other podcast where we talk about video games, and the we just played a game called um the What Remains of Edith Finch.

Speaker: oh which is very upsetting, very sad um game. But it is very similar to 100 Years of Solitude. What? Why would you make a sad video game?

Speaker: Because it's ah it's a kind of art, Emma. You can make all kinds of everything. It's like, why would you make a sad movie? That's a good point. um something I mean, again, as you've said, one of the only video games you've ever played, The Walking Dead, that's a very sad video game.

Speaker: Yeah, but, you know, it's

Speaker: dodue yeah um anyway but that that book is very that that movie of that video game is very much based like inspired by 100 years of solitude so these two podcast episodes i recorded this week both had links to 100 years of solitude which is very funny that's so funny have you ever read 100 years solitude oh yeah have you no i've never read it it's It's great. it's um It's magical realism, which is like one of my favorite kind of genres. um And it's very, ah yeah, it's very beautiful, very beautiful book. um About this family in South America who have build this town and kind of all of these different stories that kind of add up to this

Speaker: um it's one of those things much like the the game that i mentioned it's there's these these little vignettes that occur over and over where it's like there's two ways to interpret it there's like the thing that that probably actually happened and then the kind of magical fantastical way that it's it's told in in the in the story and it's like well you could look at it this way or you could look at it this way um yeah it's good i'll have to read it it's been a long time since i've read it but um i really i really like that book yeah anyway um and oh she tries to bang him they start making out again well first hold on first she says why didn't you become a doctor and he's like well i couldn't deal with the dead bodies my father sent me to the morgue after my first year of medical school and i threw up yeah and um he considers it his failure to live up to his potential and then they're about to have sex and then what happens

Speaker: Oh, they're about to have sex. And then she has to open her for fucking mouth and say, let's just let's. I'm so excited that we're finally doing this because we're going to get all the sexual tension out and really work off all of that sexual tension. Then things can go back to normal.

Speaker: And he stops and he goes. Okay, we're done here. um And she's like, what? really likes her. really likes her. And he doesn't just want to be like a notch on her bedpost. He wants a relationship. He could have just said that to her, though. I know. He could have instead of just stalking off. But that's also like another rom-com trope that we see a lot in these books. mean, where he's that is also a thing that happens in real life. People reacting emotionally and not talking about their feelings is definitely something that happens in relationships in real life. Yeah. So now that things are weird between them, because she's just like, I don't understand what happened. And he's just like, I guess you didn't want the same things that I wanted. And and then they have to go on with their lives. Well, he tells her she's the one playing games, which is yeah true. Yeah. Yeah. But like.

Speaker: I don't know. Maybe you could have voiced that a little bit earlier. Yeah. She doesn't know him well enough to understand that he's not playing with her anymore. Exactly. He hasn't said that to her. Yeah, exactly. And is this where he reveals what the symbols mean?

Speaker: no not yet. Not for a while. um So it's Christmas time. um Some Harvard guy comes in to help Josh with his proposal. um And she. From HarperCollins. He works at HarperCollins. Yeah. And then she hires Danny. So Danny quit. Danny yeah started as a graphic designer that worked at the publishing company and he quit and now works, started his own graphic design like yeah independent thing. So she hires him to help work on her proposal.

Speaker: And they have this conversation where he's like, so nothing's really going to happen between us, right? And she's like, no, I'm sorry. Can we still be friends? And he's like, of course. yeah No big deal.

Speaker: You're into that other guy. That's fine. Like, I'm not going to turn my whole personality into being obsessed with you because I'm a normal human being. Yeah. He does say one sad thing, though. he says He says, yeah, no, that's fine. I'm a professional friend zone.

Speaker: I'm professionally friend zoned. Yeah, yeah, yeah. butddy Which is a little shitty. Like, we would don't really use that term anymore. But yeah it is it is nice to see um a but a straight male character in a movie like this, like... you'd Be fine.

Speaker: do that Do that normally. um Yeah. um I said, yeah, he wants her to be happy. How crazy. um so his brother's wedding is happening. He just shows up at her apartment. He's like, hey, let's go to my brother's wedding. Yeah.

Speaker: He's like, you said you'd go. And she's like, what? She says you're the man version of Icy Hot. yeah And so she ah she's like, okay, fine, yeah, we'll go to I'll go to the wedding with you. Which is, I thought was just a wedding, but no, it's like ah out upstate New York, out like New Hampshire, Vermont, somewhere in the woods. Like they have to drive and stay overnight situation.

Speaker: they it originally was going to to be a much, it's COVID restrictions is why the a lot of the the stuff was going to be a big wedding and there were goingnna be more scenes and stuff, but they had to cut it all down.

Speaker: They get to the to the lodge or whatever, and there's only one room. Can you imagine? no, another trope, only one bed? What? um The clerk's name is Jaffrey, which yeah I feel like has got to be a reference to Sakina Jaffrey, who plays her boss.

Speaker: It's like, that's so weird, right? ah Yeah, I immediately thought of um what is the that sad um little...

Speaker: ah Oh my God. Trash Panda. oh that What is the the weird raccoon that everyone's obsessed with?

Speaker: It's not. I don't know. I've been off the internet. I've been off the internet for. i immediately thought of Jimothy. I don't know who that is. We've talked about Jimothy.

Speaker: I've been on Instagram for a year. What's Jimothy? Google Jimothy. Google. Just Google the word Jimothy. I'm pretty sure we've done this on the podcast before. oh my God. A raccoon just crawled across the yeah page. Yes. The world's obsessed with Timothy. It is a wild raccoon living in Seattle.

Speaker: Yeah. His unusual short rounded shape, likely the result of his spinal deformity, led to him becoming a viral internet sensation in July, 2026. Yeah. Love Timothy. There's lots of illustrations here of Timothy. Yeah. He's adorable.

Speaker: Sure. He's a little gremlin. you've talked about this before. Oh, he He's the is yes so cute. Aww. Isn't he so cute? Yeah, he's cute. that is yeah that's So he's a wild raccoon. like Yeah, he's a wild raccoon.

Speaker: so yeah that's where yeah emma has to teach katie about the internet now because she yeah doesn't have social media anymore yep and this wild raccoon is more viral than we are let's fix that go get to your real listeners let's not don't want to be that viral than jimothy the adorable raccoon with a spinal injur injury injury um ah so he comes out on a towel of course um he's showering and she's putting on lipstick and he's like i like red and she's like so do i then they make out yeah and then they make out and then they actually have sex this time yeah yeah it's hot and then this is when he tells her she's like what were the codes in your book and he said yeah d is for dress p is for pants s is for skirt and i make a mark when we have a fight and i make an x when i want to kiss you

Speaker: Jesus. um right Which is like on the on the verge of stalkery. But like also. It's a little stalkery. It's like a, it's in the cute range of stalkery though. Like when you have a crush on somebody and you just notice things, you know? It's like her noticing his um shirts, you know? Exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah. She talks to the bride after the wedding and finds out that she was dating Josh, the bride who was dating Josh,

Speaker: for a year before she broke up with him and married his brother. And married his brother, which is just like super fucked up. And nobody else thinks it's weird at this wedding. Like the the dad gives a father of the groom speech. And even though the mom, who is very sweet and lovely and wonderful and meets Lucy at the beginning of the wedding and is like excited to meet her and obviously still has a relationship with her son. um it she had like written a speech for the dad to give and he goes no i'm not gonna do your that speech i'm gonna just go off the cuff and his entire speech is like this son my son who is getting who's getting married right now is the perfect son i don't need any other son is everything i've ever wanted and will it's really shady to his other son yeah it's so in a way that I feel like the groom should be upset that he made his wedding speech at his wedding about his younger brother's disappointment instead of about him you know right right and like he like and then he's outside staring at the snowy um wilderness and she comes outside and he goes um the day that I got my MBA from Harvard my dad went on a fishing trip

Speaker: with my brother and a bunch of other surgeons and said I wasn't invited because I wouldn't fit in yeah yeah which is like the day he got his MBA from Harvard University Harvard Business School his uh yeah his dad is a terrible person yeah then his dad gets drunk yeah dad gets drunk and tells him is yelling at him telling him he's flirting with some intern and yeah he's like intern yeah She's like, excusez-moi monsieur. And then she she tells off his dad.

Speaker: In a very adorable way. It is. it's very It's very cute. It's one of those those things that like in a in a lesser rom-com, like he would have gotten mad at her and be like, yeah you know, you don't put yourself in this business. But in this, he's like, that was great. Let's leave.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Because his dad sucks so much. um Yeah. And they're like holding any hands in the car on the way back home. That's very sweet. And she's like, I thought that you hated me. And he says, never, not for one second. And I can prove it to you.

Speaker: and he takes her back to his apartment. And he has her like look in the mirror. Or earlier, she's wearing a green dress at the wedding. And he says, it matches your eyes. Yeah. And...

Speaker: He painted his wall to match her eyes. Yeah, which again, stalkery, unless it's in a rom-com. It's a little creepy, but it works in his context. But I was so swooned. Because I have green eyes too, Emma. I do too. I do too, Katie. do you think he painted the wall after our eye color?

Speaker: yeah i think that's it That's what it is. Yeah. Um... So he calls her shortcake because her family farms strawberries. Yeah. And he says it would be a dead giveaway the that I love you.

Speaker: And then that was, and then he's just like, you're freaking out. You're freaking out. Cause he says the L word and, and it's just sort of like really dropped. very suddenly and um he's like you don't have to i don't remember if he says like you don't have to say anything back but like he's just like you're freaking out you're freaking out and then they sleep together again which we don't see because she falls asleep on his chest but she wakes up just sort of like and watches him sleep it's very cute and then the next day at work he has given her a matchbox car which he has like a little collection out of at his apartment and she gives him a smurf and then this is where i start having issues

Speaker: Yeah. So here's the thing. This is like a, I don't know how long this book is, but we'll say, you know, minimum 300 page book that they've turned into a 90 minute movie. This is not one of those two hour rom-coms. I feel like they should have made it a two hour rom-com. Right. Pretty much right at the 90, it's like 95 minutes or something with credits. So because right at this moment, um like I don't have an issue with the next story beat that happens, which is, she overhears him talking to her boss because it makes sense in a rom-com sort of like you know structure that his boss to corbin burnson yeah to his boss about like how he's gonna like beat her out for this job and um she's just corbin burnson is saying all of this stuff and he's just kind of agreeing yeah to

Speaker: you know, in in actuality, he's just like, yeah, yeah, sure, sure, sure. Like, you know, pawning him off. Yeah, but he does like he does say it in like such a way that it's just sort of like, you believe him. And yeah um you're like, well, obviously this is a famous trope of a misunderstanding. It's a classic. because we so do Do we have thing for misunderstandings?

Speaker: Do we have a, so as what? We have misunderstanding, misunderstanding, oh misunders misundtanding misunderstanding. Misunderstanding, Moment. Alert. Alert. Alert. alert um and And so you're just like, okay, I get that.

Speaker: let's Let's see how this resolves. And so she's naturally upset. She thinks that he is trying to sabotage her and get the job. And this was all just one long con so that he could get the job. And so she goes out with Daniel and gets coffee. And she's just like, I just don't understand. It just seems so psychotic that, you know, I get like flirting with me and throwing me off my A game, but like to actually pretend like you have feelings for me. and like to sleep with her yeah to sleep with me and like say that you love me like that's that's way too far that's psychotic behavior and um and he walks in as she's having coffee and saying like down with you know young gibbs yeah josh does and i keep forgetting his name he's just young gibbs to me down with young gibbs and he walks in the tail and he's just like i came to to

Speaker: keep you company and to get coffee. And she's just like, I never want, why would I ever hang out with you or do anything with you? Yeah. I would never get coffee with you. And so things are, things are bad. And like, at this point I paused it to go pee and I'm like, there's only like 15 minutes left at this movie. Mm-hmm. how are we going to resolve all of this tension? Because like, I'm emotionally invested. I've been put on a roller coaster. I i want some sort of, you know, nice, clean resolution to all of this. That makes sense.

Speaker: Yeah. And the movie says, no, let's not do that. Well, he, she tells him, this is the big problem because she tells him she overheard him and he doesn't explain it. He doesn't explain it.

Speaker: he could Nobody explained He could easily just explain it. Yeah. And he doesn't. moment never really fully gets explained. He's suddenly jealous of Danny? Like, what the fuck? Exactly. And I'm like, what is happening right now? And then I'm just like, well, surely he's going to explain and it's going to all, like, be like what that conversation was like because that was so hurtful and I'm still really emotionally bruised from that as the viewer it never gets fully explained he never says what the conversation is about he never explains like what really happened he just says you misunder you misheard me or you misunderstood but it never says what she misunderstood

Speaker: I'm sure in the book there's more to it. I don't remember. It's been too long since I've read it. um I don't remember, but I'm sure there's more explanation and there's more to it in that. There has to be Because I remember really liking the book. They just glaze over it.

Speaker: I wouldn't have liked it that much if it didn't if it had been as brief as this. Because then the next thing that happens is she goes she goes back, she gives her presentation. Everybody's rooting for her. She gives a fantastic presentation. Well, and hold on. There's one thing she asks him. She's like, are you going to let Bexley gut to the literary department? And she he says, it's his company. Like, why are you being coy all of a sudden? Yeah. like That was another moment that I went. was like, well, surely he'll like explain. Yeah. And get, we'll understand.

Speaker: Nope. Her idea that she pitches is that she wants to start like digital serial publishing where the author publishes books serially, like chapter by chapter, and then people can comment and discuss it with the author, which sounds to me like a fucking nightmare.

Speaker: I was like, I bet Katie has strong opinions about this. i do not want to talk about my book in chapter by chapter with internet people. Internet trolls.

Speaker: You don't want that. No book publisher is going to think that's a good idea. But the ah the board is like, very interesting. It's not interesting. Tell me more. It's a terrible idea.

Speaker: But it's cute. She's like, you know, like books were serialized in, you know, the 19th century, like, you know, Dickens and all that. Which like, yeah, but like Dickens wasn't responding to to readers in real time on his chapters of, right you know, Nicholas Nickleby or whatever. It would take months to like get review in because of old timey ways of doing things. Yeah. Yeah. um So she's like talking to her boss and she's just like, yeah, i you know, I don't know if I got the job or not, but I really put in my all and I really sort of like I felt like I killed it. So I felt like I did my best job. So whatever the outcome is, I feel good about this.

Speaker: And this is when Sakina Jaffer gives her an early edition of Pride and Prejudice. And she's like, Darcy was an inscrutable, misunderstood person like Josh. um And then she's like, sometimes a guy's just an asshole.

Speaker: Which I'm just like, is this foreshadowing for the end of this movie? We have a misdirect where it seems like he got the job, but really they're congratulating him on leaving. Because he has quit And has taken a job at HarperCollins Which he got from that guy that he met earlier yeah But he doesn't tell anybody this And he And so she walks in he he you know makes this long big speech that seems like it's gonna be a douchey speech about how great he is but then he goes to our new operations director lucy and she goes what but i thought you had the job and he goes no i don't work here anymore not for two weeks and then the boss comes up and she goes that's my fault i told him not to say anything because wouldn't you know it lit a fire under your ass wink wink nudge nudge end of movie

Speaker: she that's not the end of the movie she's right um like she's like working against him made you better because what she didn't have was like fire ambition like she had um like that girl who like walked all over her she finally stands up to her at the end of this movie and she's like you can't like i can't do this like you have to turn your stuff in on time like yeah that you can't walk all over me anymore yeah But none of the stuff about Josh is ever explained.

Speaker: Like none of that fucking bullshit. does tell off, he does tell off Corbin Bernson at the end. Like, I think, yeah, I think the idea there was that he was just, you know, saying, yeah, sure, dude, whatever. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it was just, it wasn't in a way that it felt like you know, like he was just like a grin going, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It was like he, he, the way that he was stood in that scene, the way that he was like responding to dad from psych was like in a way that he was like actively listening and responding where you believe what's happening and you never get the contrast of that. And so I'm just sort of like, we're just going to forget all of that.

Speaker: And the fact that he just said it's his company, like what the Yeah, that's crazy. He's, yeah, he's he's being coy with her, which is very annoying. um So dumb! ah I do want to, I wonder, i think i have that I have this book around here somewhere. I should check and and see how it works out at the end of the book, because it's definitely different. um There's no way it's exactly, I mean, there is that there is that misunderstanding. The same thing happens, but i'm sure it's gotta be, better it's gotta be, um,

Speaker: you know, told better. It's gotta be written better. They just sweep all that bullshit under the rug and they go, well, it made you a more competitive person, Lucy. So that's why we didn't tell you all these things. Yeah. And then I woke up this morning. I was like, wait, okay. So hold on.

Speaker: Was... because I'm trying to rationalize what's happening what what happened in that last chunk and I was like so like was he just doing it because he knew that he she was overhearing to like light a fire under her ass was he just like I don't think so her boss like what i don't think that's true I think it's explain to me I think maybe maybe he was gonna tell her at coffee but she had already overreacted to to that and then he was mad at her so he didn't do that he's gotten more about like smaller things that I'm just like this is just what sorry it made me really mad I wanted to throw my phone against the wall don't do that that's no i'm the phone and the wall at the wall And I just, it it just wrapped it up way too quickly for me that I was just like, wouldn't have minded some, um um normally I'm like less time in a movie, give me less. But um in this, i was like, give me more.

Speaker: Give me yeah yeah another half hour. 10 more minutes really would have would have um helped a lot, you Yeah. Yeah. yeah So, um, yeah, that's, and then they have a cute little like epilogue scene where, you know, she's got this fabulous job and he's, you know, she's fighting with someone on the phone about like stealing one of their, um, authors and they are, she goes like walking and then they meet and they, the two of them, they've been fighting on the phone and, um, they have like their little banter and, And then they go off. their deal. They fight. Yeah, they fight. And and then they walk off into the sun together and I'm left there with my arms up going, that's it?

Speaker: That's it? Yeah, i mean, the thing about the thing about enemies to lovers as a trope is that you you get a lot of of that tension that needs to carry forward into every aspect of the relationship as it evolves on the screen. And so you need to to keep that as long as you want. You need to keep that tension going as long as possible. So that's why you have to have this like, you know, 11th hour kind of turn there. But like, you've got resolve it better than this. You've got to resolve it in some way. It can't be just so simple as like, well, he he has to have a better reason for not explaining himself. You know, like there has to be, or like there has to be

Speaker: you know, some barrier to explaining. Exactly. And it's- Because so much of this movie was great. I loved a lot about this movie. It had all the tropes that I loved. It was sexy as hell. It was cute. It was adorable. And then they just sort of like threw everything out the window in the last 15 minutes. And- Way to go.

Speaker: Way to go, hating game. i hate you. Wow. I don't, I don't, I enjoyed it. I don't hate this movie. I like this movie, but, but yeah, I, I totally agree. That's, um yeah yeah. It's a little too neat, a little too quick. Yeah. Yeah. This is very similar to, so we, Charlie, my cousin, and her boyfriend, Ben, and I all went and saw a play um in Hartford last week called um the,

Speaker: ah Well, I'm not going to say what it was called because just in case. Um, we went and saw a play. Uh, I'll say what it is here, but then cut it out. Um, so we went and we saw this play in Hartford and Charlie at the end of it, I really enjoyed it. It was beautifully acted. Um, it had some really stellar actors. It it had a fantastic set design, fantastic lighting design.

Speaker: Um, like all, everything was great. The story was like a little lacking. They, it wasn't the best script, but it wasn't terrible. Like it was like,

Speaker: pretty good that so much so that like and like the actors carried it so like i i enjoyed it a lot i didn't love it i'm not like obsessed with it but i really enjoyed the show yeah at the end charlie was so fucking mad he was just like i' just don't understand why the play wasn't like all that Everything else was so good.

Speaker: Everything else except the script. Everything else. He was like, that script was terrible. So I feel like I'm pulling a bit of a Charles in this moment. Oh, okay. i'm Sure, sure, sure. because he like he got really really mad and then we got into a fight about it and then um the next day he goes I may have overreacted I think that I just was really um so in love with all of the elements except the script and the script is such a big part of a production that yeah it's really rough it's really rough when the script is bad because it kind of infects everything else it's

Speaker: Some might say it's the most important part. Some might say it's the most important part. I didn't think it was as bad as he didn't. He just, he thought that there were too many like plot holes and he just, he really wanted this. I think he was so upset because he wanted the script to be as great as all of the other elements. Yeah. am Because everything was so spectacular.

Speaker: um But the script was just like, fine. Yeah. Yeah. So he felt cheated. That's how I felt about the hating game. Yeah, that's fair. Yeah. um What are we watching next week?

Speaker: You're going to be so mad at me. Oh, God. ah um So next week, we haven't done a ton of classic rom-com in a minute. um And so I thought, no, actually, no, we're not going to do that one. We're going to do this one. Okay. I'm changing my mind. You're not going to be as mad at me. I was originally, because eventually we Probably not going to mad at you either way.

Speaker: We will eventually do Breakfast at Tiffany's, but we're not doing Breakfast at Tiffany's next week. I mean, listen, Breakfast at Tiffany's, despite, like, extreme racism, is yeah still a pretty good movie. Like, yeah I don't hate Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Speaker: Okay. Well, we're gonna do How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Oh, hell yeah. Yeah! Um, uh, not really a rom-com, but, like, great movie. Love How to Business. yeah, okay, fine. Um...

Speaker: anything can be wrong column we haven't done a classic and we haven't done a musical in a minute let's do how to succeed um how to succeed one of my favorite musicals of all time great musical great musical yeah emma we talked multiple we've talked multiple times about your uh casting and yeah yep we'll point out who you actually played yeah oh you blink and you'll miss it blink and you'll miss it um jesus fucking christ Hell yeah.

Speaker: I probably will tell my edible story once again. um That's reasonable because people don't listen to every episode. Maybe they haven't heard the edible story. yeah Exactly.

Speaker: ah Shall we outro? Let's outro.
