Campus Living: Experiences and Adaptation
00:06:13
Speaker
Okay, well, welcome Pete to the welcome certification podcast. I'll give you a bit of an introduction. Peter Becky is a fellow college student of mine. We're both studying liberal arts. And yeah, we're going to talk about Peter's survival guide for university. So, hi Pete. How are you doing? Thank you for having me. Of course. I reckon we should just jump right into it. Okay. Let's talk about general college life.
00:06:37
Speaker
What's your perception? What's your favourite part about living on campus at a university? I think it makes it very easy to... When you're in the same place, everyone's doing the same thing.
00:06:56
Speaker
Most of the time you have the same interests and most of the time you have the same beliefs. It really creates kind of a community where it is easy to do study as well as have a lot of fun because you're all doing the same things, you're all studying the same thing. Also, what's very important is you all have to do the same stuff. Yeah. Which makes it a lot easier compared to, you know, say if you were to live off college and be a day student. I would definitely prefer living on college, which I am now, but yeah, no.
00:07:25
Speaker
yeah and i mean just in terms of like homesickness did you move interstate to come to sydney i did i used to live in melbourne nice and um first time out of home but i think i settled in very well yeah actually first night i remember being here
00:07:42
Speaker
I felt a little homesick, just as in, it's such a big change. And then by the second night, this is my home now, I've really settled in. There's any regret, I think it's a good change. That's so true. And also you're living with a roommate, which is interesting. How do you find that? It's great actually, because I suppose,
00:08:03
Speaker
It's almost kind of like an accountability partner sometimes, especially if you're good friends with them. It definitely, um, you know, grow bonds and relationships and then, you know, yeah, you're living in the same room. You definitely, um, you definitely, you show some, maybe some effects of yourself that, you know, you wouldn't show to anyone else and I think you create a bond like that. But luckily the roommate I have now are actually new in beforehand. Oh, really? Actually. Yeah, it was really good. It's very nice to already have that connection, but, um, no, we really enjoy each other's company and we.
00:08:33
Speaker
And I think we get along very well, which I'm very glad. That's so good. What would be your tip then for the listeners? If they are deciding between living in college or university accommodation and they have the option to live with someone or live by themselves, I guess what would you say to that?
00:08:52
Speaker
I think it depends on who you are. If you're more of an introverted person who just, you know, wants to be by themselves and have their room to themselves, then sure, you know, there's that option. But if you want to, um, if you kind of just want to share, you know, it's not that, it's not that bad because you do definitely have that separation, even if you are living together in the same room.
00:09:10
Speaker
Um, I think it definitely depends on who you, what you prefer. If you're an introverted person, you know, extroverted person. Yeah. And if you want your alone time and just your own space and yeah, nice.
Student Life Hacks: Budgeting and Health
00:09:22
Speaker
Um, yeah, food is such a big topic. Um, cause you have to, I mean, we had the benefit that we're fed meals, weekly, um, dinners, but in terms of, you know, for students who might have to feed themselves like breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
00:09:39
Speaker
What would you say will be your tips? Definitely budgeting. A good way to budget is just not to eat too much junk food. Just don't buy stuff all the time. Just don't eat terrible things constantly.
00:09:58
Speaker
Even if they're filling in. That said, I do allow myself to, you know, sometimes have, you know, a nice mackerel. I'll just go get a kebab down at the shop. But I definitely, definitely just buying healthy ingredients. It's not too hard to cook to make a good meal, but it definitely does require some amount of effort. But luckily here we do have dinner provided, which Mohammed, our chef, is quite good. Yeah, so good. He's quite good at it. And, you know, enjoys meals. Yeah. And that kind of flows nicely onto
00:10:28
Speaker
To exercise I guess because you know if you're eating even if you're eating healthy I think that you don't need to exercise and be physically active. So What do you do to exercise Pete? I usually ride my scooter around campus usually at night because it's the best time to do it as a nice sometimes if it's a nice night to go out for my
00:10:49
Speaker
put my earbuds in, listen to whatever and just go for it because I find it clears my mind at the end of the day. Yeah. And yeah, that's kind of my form of exercise. I do need to do more though, because like maybe go for a walk or go to the gym. Do you think it's helpful, you know, like investing in like a gym membership if you didn't have access to a gym?
00:11:13
Speaker
Yes. No, I think it would be definitely very helpful. I mean, sure, you don't want to be spending money on something you never could have used. So you always got to, you know, really, if you've got to commit to it, you've got to commit to it. Yeah. And that leads into things like, you know, transport and getting around. And that's also like another thing about finance is like.
00:11:30
Speaker
budgeting money especially. Do you have a car? No, I do not have a car. So you're catching buses and things to get around public transport? Yes, luckily in Sydney compared to Melbourne the transport is a lot better but still you're spending money and you start to walk to a bus stop or whatever and get on a train and do the whole thing and it definitely
00:11:49
Speaker
It definitely is harder, but, um, there are ways around it. Like you can get, you can get concession cards where you get half price off and everything, but, but yeah, you really, just those little things like that and cutting down your costs make a huge effect. Um, when you're living here, you know, for, you know, some, some years, sometimes just a year and you save a lot of money, but just doing those little things. So I think the little things definitely help. Yeah. How do you, like, how do you budget your money?
00:12:18
Speaker
When you get, yeah. I try not to, I'm not very good sometimes. Me neither. You just, you just, um, you know, if you're out with friends, maybe, and you know, maybe you've already had something to eat and everyone wants to go again, you know, go to a restaurant, get food. Maybe just don't do that. Yeah. I mean, I mean, there's, there's so many other ways of having fun without having to go out and spend money, which is good. We have a lot of events around campus where, you know, everyone will be playing sport or sometimes lunches that be put on by, yeah.
00:12:48
Speaker
the student life office, whatever. And just things like that. There's a lot of ways of having fun with your friends without having to spend money. Yeah. And yeah. That's so true.
Music and Lifestyle Balance: Finding Harmony
00:12:58
Speaker
And you mentioned before, when you're riding around your scooter and listening to music, what sort of music do you like listening to? Right now, my music of choice is jazz. I love jazz. Nice. Yeah. I think it's something about it. It's like, hey, I'm
00:13:14
Speaker
I think I heard it on some podcasts. It's like almost like a sweet and sour combination where it really just touches me and I just love it. I can't get enough of it. Yeah. Do you listen to jazz or any sort of music when you're studying? I usually don't listen to music when I'm studying. Really? I usually have my head completely clear, usually of any noise I try to. But I haven't really tried it either. So it's just been, yeah, the way I study is I just don't have any music and just get right to it really usually.
00:13:43
Speaker
Yeah, I have. I mean, I like to listen to classical music. But then as well, like if you listen to enough of the classical pieces, you start to memorize them. And then you're studying and then even classical music can become a distraction because you're looking forward to like the next part of the piece or something. Yeah. Yeah. Don't listen to music at all.
00:14:02
Speaker
I mean, I might give it a go. I've heard some recommendations of just, you know, maybe some soundtracks or something. Just something very not too distracting, but something to help you along. So I might try that out. But right now I'm just studying with that music. Yeah. Have you heard of like white noise and brown noise? I have heard of that. Yeah. Yeah. I've never heard of that again.
00:14:20
Speaker
Um, it's pretty cool. I feel like, um, yeah, I recently discovered a brown noise just scrolling through Instagram and I saw that. What's the difference between brown noise and white noise? No, I think it's, I think it's different frequencies. Yeah, but what's the color? How do you have color with the noise? There's a white and brown. There's like green noise. Yeah, that's a good point. I don't know. Apparently
00:14:41
Speaker
Brandos are supposed to help with ADHD, supposedly, but I don't know if that's an actual scientific factor. That's just like an inquiry that people just want to keep researching into. But yeah, what about, yeah, let's move on to your next tip about sleep.
00:14:59
Speaker
sleep usually a good way a good way of getting sleep is going to bed at the same time and getting up at the same time every day and that's usually it yeah because it's so simple but yet I mean a lot of people I know
00:15:15
Speaker
It's not my case where I sleep quite easily. I don't need much to get a good night's sleep. But just for me, just getting into a routine, going to bed around the same time and getting up around the same time, it usually gets me into a good habit and I just feel a lot better and a lot more refreshed if I do that.
00:15:32
Speaker
Yeah and I was gonna say it can be a bit difficult as well like living on campus and the university life and how a lot of people are doing stuff at night time or there's spontaneous like you know sunrise beach trips or something and you have to wake up early. How do you sort of adjust to the yeah the spontaneous things that make you feel?
00:15:53
Speaker
you definitely can't do everything sometimes you have to pick and choose but i always recommend doing all the study you need to do in the morning because usually all the events that happen on campus and off campus are usually in the afternoon or evening so it's always trying to do your study in the morning because and then you have more time in the evening and afternoon to actually do the fun things that's really really true yeah i think yeah i think there's some um
00:16:19
Speaker
like facts that I read one time where it's like your brain's most active between four and six am um but I think it's sometimes really hard you know like staying up late and then trying to like wake up at a reasonable time you know to have that good sleep cycle um but yeah have you ever woken up super early um I can wake up early but usually right now my wake up time is around eight yeah I get a good night's sleep but it's not too early but not too late
00:16:44
Speaker
It's good because then usually classes will start at 9am or something. Yeah, or 10. Usually I think that was the earliest one. Yeah, that's so good. Oh nice. How would you say, like jumping back, you know how I would hug my roommates and that sort of like that first night you were staying on campus, how did you like settle into your room when you sort of got straight here? I think the first thing I did was made my bed, which was I think
00:17:11
Speaker
Yeah, I think it just has a sense of, okay, this is home now and you make your bed and put all the stuff in the drawers or whatever. So that's what I did. I haven't done too much decorating in my room, not much. No fairy lights. No fairy lights yet. I will buy some fairy lights. Not much art at all. I think a friend of mine, he drew me a picture of Lightning McQueen and I put it up on my wall and that's what it is.
00:17:34
Speaker
That's really all the, um, that's really all the decorations I have on my wall right now. But other than that, it feels like home anymore. Okay. You know, it's where I live and sleep and that kind of, it kind of embeds your home into it anyway. Yeah. I found that like, um, so I basically went from having the single room and then I went to share with someone, had a roommate purely just like financial purposes, but, um, yeah, it was very interesting. Just like when I was by myself, it didn't feel like home for me. Um,
00:18:04
Speaker
Like it just kind of felt like the place where, yeah, I woke up, went to bed. And then moving in with my roommate, it was really nice because, you know, we put up the fairy lights and, you know, my clothes just looked better in the new closet or, yeah, just making my bed and just having like another bed next to that where, like, you know, it's just the two different styles and there was just more stuff in the room.
00:18:28
Speaker
And it just felt a lot more like home. So yeah, that's very interesting. Yeah, two different styles. I love it. How about friendships? How would you? Yeah. How do you manage your friendships and how would you set up boundaries even, you know, with your roommate? I guess if you kind of wanted some alone time.
00:18:51
Speaker
And like, let's just say they were all up in your face and just wanted to talk, talk, talk. Like, how would you, um, yeah, set that
Creating Community: Clubs and Personal Growth
00:18:58
Speaker
boundary? I think we haven't, me in my room haven't talked about that too much. Sometimes we're just both quiet in the rooms, either studying and we, we don't, we sometimes we're not trying to disturb one another. Maybe that's not me with the case, but.
00:19:13
Speaker
Um, but I think we both, I think we both have some sort of understanding of when, you know, we want to talk or not just by, you know, we haven't really talked about that much, but, um,
00:19:24
Speaker
If we did want to have some more time, usually we'd just go out. He likes to write the scooter as well. Yeah, yeah. We both have to go second scooters. Yeah, we'll just go for a walk, which is nice. And I think that works fine. Yeah, it works fine. Especially, especially in just clearing your mind, because, you know, sometimes you don't have to get away from people, but most of the time it's super fun. Everyone's, almost everyone's your friend here. I mean, there are,
00:19:51
Speaker
Sometimes there are naturally when you have many people in one place, there are going to be friend groups. That's just how it is. But I think everyone here really enjoys each other's company, which is so true. Yeah, I think I'm just thinking because obviously like our university is not ginormous. It's quite niche. And yeah, there are not a lot of people that study here, which is beautiful, but just in terms of
00:20:18
Speaker
um for universities who might have you know like a thousand two thousand or like more than that students that are attending um and maybe someone hasn't found a friendship group yet maybe might not be living on campus what would you say to that like well yeah i mean i wouldn't if you're going to university and you weren't even living on campus and i mean i wouldn't even blame you if you had no friends because i mean there's so many people how can you ever you know when you just have um we just have a few people around you it's just so much easier to
00:20:47
Speaker
identify with that group when it's smaller but when it's you know a thousand people yeah it's almost impossible yeah because it's um it's just so large you can't even it's like finding a needle in a haystack yeah so um yeah I think it's definitely easier to have that one or maybe a few friends on a smaller campus and a big one because it's just
00:21:09
Speaker
it's a lot more intimate in a good way. I remember so I went to a university last year as well, studying something completely different, psychology, and I remember like the first week I knew people who went to the university but they're also in different courses and I was really quite
00:21:26
Speaker
i guess concerned that i wouldn't find a friendship group in my psychology cohort and i guess like the way that i did that was just by joining clubs and different societies like joined a volleyball club which was really great because you know i was able to um like become friends with people with like you kind of have like a common denominator um
00:21:47
Speaker
And so yeah, everyone that played obviously loved volleyball and it's something you can just talk about and you go get ice cream afterwards or something, which just kind of doesn't quite add up with exercising and then eating sugar. But yeah, that was really good. So would you recommend joining clubs and societies and stuff to find friends? Oh, definitely because
00:22:08
Speaker
I mean, we all have interests, and usually when you do move to a college, they do have societies where it might pick your interests. Like we have a theater society here on campus, which I'm a part of, which I'm really enjoying. And the people in that, because they have a few of the same interests that I do, we all get along very well. It's just a good way to express maybe the interests you have that are kind of outside of study a bit more, which I think is very healthy and good.
00:22:33
Speaker
Yeah. And I mean, speaking about that and things that you enjoy, um, let's talk about your hobbies. What do you enjoy to do? What do I enjoy to do? I enjoy a lot of things, but right now I love music and sometimes creating music and playing music. What instruments do you play?
00:22:48
Speaker
I usually piano, so I've been trying to learn a piece. I'm not very good, but I think it's just a hobby for years I've had that I've always really enjoyed. I had a good piano teacher, Becky Melbourne, that taught me the ropes, and it just kind of stuck with me. I've always really enjoyed it. I've fallen out of practice sometimes, but usually I'd get back onto it. Yeah, so aside from music, do you enjoy doing anything else?
00:23:16
Speaker
I do enjoy running. I've fallen out over the past few weeks, but over the past few years, running has been my sport of choice. Again, it's like a good escape. I can put in my headphones, go for a run, usually in the evening, and it would be a good exercise, but also a bit of entertainment. Yeah, it's so good.
00:23:40
Speaker
The best thing is obviously being safe but exploring the neighbourhood and environment around the university or wherever the people are residing.
Nature and Spirituality: Relaxation and Balance
00:23:51
Speaker
That can be so cool because there's really cool nature walks near us, like nature tracks.
00:23:57
Speaker
and a lot of recreational things, which is really helpful. It's a lot better than looking at your phone. Yes. Oh my goodness, so true. Let's talk about spiritual life because that's obviously a really important aspect of just general life.
00:24:11
Speaker
yeah yeah definitely um here i think a lot of people have the same beliefs spiritual beliefs so when you have that i think easier to get in good habits of prayer and everything and just being like really in tune as well to like the environment and i think as well just being grateful like i find gratitude is just what can make i mean if someone has um you know like religion or not i think just like that sense of gratitude is very um
00:24:41
Speaker
Yeah, it's very pivotal to happiness, I think. And also not thinking of yourself all the time in more of a charitable atmosphere where everyone is concerned for one another instead of themselves all the time. It definitely rubs off on you in a good way. Yeah, no for sure. And I guess coming to the last couple of
Effective Time Management: A Flexible Approach
00:25:01
Speaker
Um, just talking about like time, um, how would you manage your time effectively? Sometimes, um, I do kind of have a rough schedule on my week or day, but, um,
00:25:17
Speaker
Most of the time I just try and, I usually have a list of things I need to get done in a day and I try and get those things done kind of on my own time, not usually at set times. And I think that usually works for me because I know most of the time, even though I probably set a time to study, I don't usually end up doing that. So I think I find, in my case, I find it easier just saying, I need to get whatever this assignment done. I just need to get in this rough estimate time. I think that usually works for me.
00:25:45
Speaker
I mean, I'm not sure if you've done this before. I found this actually really helpful, but I kind of had my assignment in the due date of the assignment and then I'll set the due date for myself two or three days before the actual assignment date. Have you done that before? No, I haven't done that. Yeah, it kind of.
00:26:01
Speaker
I would say it's helpful. I actually haven't enacted it properly. I've kind of just written it down in the diary, but then it has just been naturally pushed back. But yeah, it's a good tactic to use. Yeah, maybe I'll give it a try. Yeah, listening to music while studying again. Also, definitely allowing yourself a few days before your sermon is due just to actually work on it.
00:26:30
Speaker
I try and definitely not leave myself until the last minute. I definitely try and do some work on them before they're actually due, which I think is the best way to go about it because it just makes it easier. Yeah. No, 100%. And that actually bridges nicely into the last question, which is,
00:26:47
Speaker
um just how do you maintain your mental health and how do you sort of just like putting yourself first in a good way um just so that you feel you know good about yourself and your studies and your friendships and your relationships and everything yeah yeah i think there definitely is sometimes a fine line between being charitable
00:27:08
Speaker
towards others and thinking of others, but also thinking of yourself. And sometimes it just, it usually just works out anyway. Usually when you know you do think of others and you do two things for others, I think that affects your mental health in a good way anyway. But also for me, there's still a lot of time in the day to do your own thing and to do your own study. And that's what I love about it. It's almost like,
