Introduction to 'All Things Education'

00:00:05
Speaker
Hey, it's Mary Coleman, your host for the All Things Education podcast. If you don't know, I'm a student too and I'm currently studying psychology. I'm so glad you're listening today because we learn about study and lifestyle tips, chat with professional guests about a range of topics. We learn about the ins and outs of school and uni life, how to form solid friendships, actualize career aspirations, chat about relationships, moving, traveling, and so much more. We have a range of content on this podcast and it's all to help you be that much more informed about the world we live in.
00:00:34
Speaker
So, let's get educated, shall we? Hello, hello, everybody. Welcome back to another episode. It is yours truly, Mary Coleman, back atcha.

Commitment to Consistency

00:00:44
Speaker
I'm sticking to my 2023 goal, which is to release a podcast episode every single Sunday night. So yes, I'm sticking to that. Currently, I'm recording on Thursday night, Thursday evening, because I know I'm going to have a busy next couple of days. But nonetheless, here I am, ready

Goals vs. Resolutions

00:01:00
Speaker
to talk to you. It's just me today. There's no one else jumping on the
00:01:04
Speaker
podcast it's just gonna be because we are going to be talking about my 2023 goals and how I really don't believe in news resolutions but I believe in something that's a bit more long-term and a bit more effective sustainable
00:01:18
Speaker
that will last 2023 and beyond and those goals actually become turn to habits. So I'll talk all about that in the episode today. Really just how I am really, really, really against news resolutions because news resolutions often fizzle and fade out and most of the time they're just an idea, but they're not really actually like a smart goal, which is something that I'm gonna talk about a little bit later as well. Anyways, but that is the first sort of part of the episode

Glowing Up Tips

00:01:48
Speaker
In the second part of the episode, I may be talking about how to glow up because for those listening in Australia, it is summertime and yes, the sun is shining, the weather is warm, the tans are glowing and everything is great. Currently in Australia, we do not go back to school until the end of February if you're listening from overseas.
00:02:08
Speaker
So I'm going to give a couple of tips about how to glow up, and obviously this applies to anyone and everywhere you can glow up, whether it's summer, autumn, winter, or spring. Yeah, particularly for the Aussie listeners out there, I'm going to kind of cater it a little bit more towards the Australian lifestyle, particularly the state that I'm living in, like, you know, the climate and the weather, et cetera, and giving tips about how to glow up in this summery season.
00:02:36
Speaker
But yes, nonetheless, if you are living overseas or listening overseas, there are still heaps of ways that you can apply the glow up tips as well. So in terms of a weekly recap, um, yeah, wow, honestly, actually a lot has happened. So I am super, super excited if you saw on the Instagram page, if you're not following all things education 21. Um, yeah, on the Instagram, I made like a cute little real unboxing my Emma Kate.
00:03:04
Speaker
co-2023 weekly planner. Oh my goodness. It's it's not sponsored like there's no paid partnership or anything like that. They are just brilliant. I'm giving them a huge shout out because they are so great. Oh my goodness. I could not get over it. I was so excited to receive the package in the mail and yeah, I filmed an unboxing and very aesthetic and what do they call ASMR very ASMR-y hearing like the paper rip and the packaging and like everything, you know.
00:03:33
Speaker
So that happened and that was really great. So this week I have just been using that planner to the max. It is so great because I can just leave it open on my desk, right? And, um, I can just leave open. I can see the entire week. Personally, I prefer the week to like week to page planner rather than the day to page planner, because I know the day to page planner, so I can't speak day to page planner.
00:04:00
Speaker
can be more beneficial for people who want to really block out their day and do a lot more in-depth day-to-day thinking. But for me, I really like to see my weekly overview. I think just a monthly overview on my calendar is not quite enough. I prefer something a little bit more intricate, but not so intricate and detailed as in just a day. I would like the spread out of the week.
00:04:21
Speaker
I got the week to page planner. It is linked on my Instagram. It's linked as one of the products on the Reel. So if you want to go check that out, please definitely do. It cost me about, well, I did get a discount because these were like the non-perfect ones. They're sort of the ones that had a bit of a problem like manufacturing. But honestly, I have literally inspected this planner like back to front.
00:04:47
Speaker
and I could not find a single fold in it like the only tiny tiny tiny mishap that I saw on the planner was one of the threads like because it's all like handmade fabric um just one of the little bits of fabric had a little bit of a thicker line um but it was so tiny and so minuscule anyways I think I got 15 or 20 dollars off
00:05:07
Speaker
the purchase, which was great. So I think in the end I spent about $60, I want to say, maybe 50, $50, $60 on it. And it came within a week and a half from Melbourne. And yeah, that was great. That was so convenient. And I honestly, I could talk about it forever. The paper is just so thick. Everything about it is just amazing. I've been loving it and the pens write really well on paper. You know when you're writing with like a kind of a dodgy pen,
00:05:34
Speaker
but it still turns out really well on the paper. Like it still looks good.
00:05:38
Speaker
You know that you've got a good quality paper, so 100% would recommend the Emma Cates Co planner. They do have other things, like stationery and other little bits and bobs and diaries, et cetera. But I am a big planner girl, and I won't mention them, but I did recently buy a very personalized planner from a smaller brand as well. I'm not saying these guys are smaller brands, but they're not stocked in a Kmart or a Target or anything.
00:06:06
Speaker
They're more unique and I did buy a planner from a different place, different brand.
00:06:13
Speaker
And I was kind of disappointed. Anyway, it doesn't matter. But I bought that planner. I spent a lot of money on that planner. And now I have this Emma Cate Co. one. I'm super happy. So that is great. In terms of another weekly recap, a big thing that happened. Well, I've done a lot of cleaning. And a lot has been happening in terms of that. Just tidying.

Personal Life Updates

00:06:36
Speaker
decluttering, getting ready for my big move to Sydney. Woo hoo, very exciting. Yeah, I will talk more about that in another episode, but that is a very, very big step for me and I'm very excited for that. So please stay tuned for more updates on the big interstate move. In terms of my psychology update, we'll jump into that.
00:07:03
Speaker
There is not much to update. I have been procrastinating. If I'm being honest, I've very much been procrastinating. I have a quiz due next Monday, and well, when you're listening to this, it's technically the quiz due tomorrow. And I have a club, I have about four big assessments, all weighted around the 20, 30% mark, and they're due within the next two, three weeks. So I have a little bit of time to do them, but I haven't started, and I haven't watched any of the lectures, and they're just going back now.
00:07:33
Speaker
Yeah, that's a little bit of stuff that I have to catch up on, but no fear, it'll be fine. We'll get it all done and just about time management and making sure that everything works, everything flows. Yeah, so let's move on to

Book Recommendation

00:07:48
Speaker
the favorite book of the week. Let's talk about my favorite book of the week.
00:07:53
Speaker
Each week I'll give you guys updates on the book that I'm currently reading, whether that's educational, fantasy, fiction or non-fiction, you'll hear about it all. Hopefully you'll be inspired to read some of the books that I'm reading so you can be more educated in different areas of your life. Let's jump into it. The book of the week that I want to recommend is called My Sister's Keeper by Jodie Pickholt. I've currently just bought two other books called Picture Perfect and The Pact. None of the books are really interrelated, I don't believe.
00:08:18
Speaker
But My Sister's Keeper is amazing. It's actually a movie if you want to go watch it as well. I would highly recommend the book. As always, books always trump movies in most cases. But this book, My Sister's Keeper is about two sisters, Anna and Kate. So Anna is not sick, but she's basically giving all these transfusions and shots and the whole lack of it so that her older sister Kate can basically fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. I'm just reading from the blurb here.
00:08:47
Speaker
It is such a brilliant book. I cried my heart out. The ending is beautiful. I would highly recommend. Go read it whenever you can. Okay, so now you've heard about the favourite book of the week. I could just go on and on and talk about that forever. But I won't because I've only given myself one minute every single week just to give a quick snapshot of my favourite book. And I don't go into all the detail as you can tell. I obviously don't want to make it like I recommend it. So I mean, I'm not an author. I don't really know how to sell a book.
00:09:17
Speaker
I guess that's not what I'm trying to do, but if that sounds interesting to you, the little snapshot that I give, definitely please go check them out. And if you do ever read a book that I recommend, let me know, DM me at allthingseducation21, I would love to hear from you.

Supporting the Podcast

00:09:30
Speaker
It's always good, I say this every time, but it's always good chatting to you guys, always good starting a conversation because it's like a little sunny community. So yeah.
00:09:38
Speaker
Anyways, just before we jump into the episode today, the content, the meat of the episode as Brooke and Danielle from Gals on the Go podcast say it. A little shout out to them once again. So I'm gonna talk about how you can support the show if you're interested. So, so far if you've been listening and you like the content and you want to help me out as your host, Mary Coleman, I'm really looking to buy some new podcast equipment, be able to create some ads on Instagram,
00:10:06
Speaker
really just not like monetize the podcast, but really just get the word out there a little bit more. So there is this platform called Buy Me a Coffee. It is in the description show notes that you can view on any of your favorite podcast platform that you listen to right now. There will be sort of a hyperlink that says support the show.
00:10:25
Speaker
If you click on that, you can donate money in increments of $5 and increase it as much as you wish. And basically the whole idea is that you're helping me buy a coffee, but all the proceeds will go towards new podcast equipment to give back to you guys, to give you a better audio experience. Okay, so now that that is all done, let's jump into the meat of the podcast.

2023 Goals Framework

00:10:47
Speaker
So yes, the four categories that I chose were health, relationships, study, and podcast. Obviously, there are so many different categories that you can choose to create your 2023 goals. Again, when I say 2023 goals, it doesn't just limit you to the goals for 2023, but these should, I guess, develop into habits that you can pursue in 2024, 2025, and for the rest of your life, you know. So these goals, I guess, are just like the basis, like the starting point, the foundation, if you will.
00:11:15
Speaker
that will be able to help you build a great, awesome, successful life. So my 2023 goals, I chose health specifically because I want to improve my health. I mean, if you go even more specific than that and go exercise, you know, skincare, wellness and spiritual or like, you know, meditation side of things, or, you know, like you could go into so many different categories about health. I chose health as my big broad category. I'm just gonna read out my four goals and then I'm gonna break them down.
00:11:45
Speaker
Under health, I had exercise five times a week, cut out excessive sugar from diet, do skincare routine daily, and plan my weekly meals. Okay, so let's first talk about how I want to exercise five times a week. I think that for every single goal that you can do, you can try and make it into an achievable smart goal. So smart goal is an acronym that stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-mount. For example,
00:12:10
Speaker
if that first goal that I've listed, I have my own sort of smart goals that are literally exactly the same as what I've listed, but it is kind of written in the smart goal form, if that makes sense. So just to make the exercise five times a week go into a smart goal, you could say that I will choose to exercise for 30 minutes five times a week without fail and taking minimal breaks.
00:12:38
Speaker
every week until the end of the year. And that is something that is specific because you're saying you want to exercise. You can make it even more specific by saying what kind of exercise, what type of exercise you want to do. So you could say you want to be doing cardio, you want to be doing HIIT, you want to be doing muscle training like working on a specific muscle. It is measurable because you're saying five times a week every week of the year. It's time down because you're saying until the end of the year. And I would say that is achievable because exercising five times a week for 30 minutes is not too hard
00:13:08
Speaker
It does take a lot of motivation and consistency, but it is achievable and it is relevant because it's relevant to my life because I want to be healthier and to exercise more. So that is just an example of one smart goal. My second goal, my 2023 goal under the health category is to cut out excessive sugar from my diet. Pretty self-explanatory, again, that I've chosen something because I've kind of chosen exercise, food,
00:13:38
Speaker
skincare and then another food one. So there are lots of different things that come under health, the health category. You can choose things like you want to do breathing exercises, you want to do meditation, whatever it is. There is lots of different health things that you can choose. But I chose to focus on my fitness levels and my diet and my skin because those are the three areas of my life that I would really like to make an impact on.
00:14:04
Speaker
Yes, cut out excessive sugar for my diet. I guess it's something like that a lot of people want to be doing, a lot of people are doing. And I think that, yeah, excessive sugar, it's just something that, it just, it doesn't need to be that. Like, it's excessive. We don't need that much sugar in, or I don't need that much sugar in my diet, so it's something I want to cut out. And to my goal number three is to do my skincare routine daily, I have to say.
00:14:30
Speaker
I haven't been the best in keeping up with this. I mean the minimum I've been doing is SPF and moisturizer which I would say is good and that's like you know it's good enough but I really want to keep building on it and I don't want it to
00:14:47
Speaker
be a hindrance to completing my goal. It's something I always forget to do in my skincare. Like, you know, cleansing my face, like, without a doubt, I always do. Like, cleansing daily, or if, you know, at least, like twice a day, but if not, like, at least once a day is good. But I don't really include that in my skincare for some reason. Like, it is, it is a part of my skincare. I just sometimes don't consider it in my skincare because I just do it. And like, I just don't think about it. It's like brushing my teeth. I just do it. You know, I wouldn't say that's like in my daily morning night routine.
00:15:15
Speaker
It is there, but I don't acknowledge it if that makes any sense. So I really want to be focusing on putting the oils on my face and putting specific, I don't know, a collagen serum or an eye serum. I don't know. You know what I mean. I want to be doing those kind of specific skincare routine stuff. I do have a skincare routine, but it's just so hard to stick to it all the time because I don't make the time to do it.
00:15:41
Speaker
So that is my goal number three. And yeah, I haven't been doing the best of it, but I am going to continue trying and I'll keep you guys updated about how it's going. Goal number four under health is to plan my weekly meals. That is a great way just to really cut out excessive snacking because you can look forward to the meals that you're eating. When I go shopping, I like to at least make a list so I don't go to the shops.
00:16:02
Speaker
you know, not knowing what I want to buy. I've done that in the past and it is the worst because you spend like an extra fifty hundred dollars on things you do not need. And yeah, that's not fun. I know that as well. If you go to the shops when you're hungry, it's really, really bad because you're going to buy things you want to eat right then and there. And you're not thinking about future you and what future you want to eat. So planning your weekly meals is great. It does take five, 10, 15 minutes maybe just to sit down and just to say, OK, this is what I'm going to be buying for the week and
00:16:31
Speaker
Yeah, it does take a little bit of time and sometimes a little bit annoying, but trust me, it is a lot better in the long run. I have been doing that this week and it's been great just to, yeah, really just plan out my meals and go, okay, well, tonight I'm gonna have something that involves chickens. I'm just gonna buy chicken and we can plan it on the night, but I know I'm having chicken. You know, like I can be a bit more relaxed about it if I'm not entirely sure. And yes, that's really good just to plan out your weekly meals.

Family and Social Goals

00:16:55
Speaker
Okay, moving on to the next category of relationships.
00:16:59
Speaker
My first big goal is to start doing a routinely games night. I'm just so excited for that. Games are a really great way just to tune out of electronic devices and social media and tune into your family and friends. I think it's a great way to be interactive and playful. You get to bond with each other more and deepen those relationships while having a really great time and making some fun memories. I always just somehow just go into fits of laughter when I remember playing a board game. I do not know how I remember I played Scrabble
00:17:28
Speaker
a couple weeks ago and that was really crazy because I hadn't played that in years. And I think the last time I played it probably was like, I was 11 or 12. And yeah, it was insane. I was just in fits of laughter because I could not for the life of me. I was making up words. I was using American spelling for things instead of Australian spelling and I was just cheating left, right and center. But nonetheless, we had a great, great time and I very much enjoyed playing Scrabble. And yeah, something I would love to do more and more, just play board games with my friends and family.
00:17:57
Speaker
and it's a great way to bond. So that is my first goal for relationships. My second goal is to deepen my family relationships. Pretty self-explanatory. I guess it never hurts to strengthen and spend time with your family and strengthen your relationships and
00:18:12
Speaker
create those bonds, deepen those bonds. It's just doing the little things like there's always little things I can do as a daughter and as a niece and as an older sister or a younger sister, you know, like whatever. There's always stuff that I can do that will help my family. My immediate family, my extended family. So that's a big goal of mine as well is just to try my best to strengthen and deepen my familial relations.
00:18:39
Speaker
relationships sorry I should say um yeah so goal number three is to focus on no more gossiping about others I put this under relationships because it can be such a hindrance on your friendships it can be such a hindrance on your relationships because if you're gossiping about other people you know it just goes to show that
00:18:58
Speaker
you are capable of talking behind another person's back and you couldn't be talking to that same person that day. Like I think, I think there's a big difference between, you know, being really frustrated with someone and just venting to your friend and being like, oh, this person is annoying me so much because this isn't, and they're affecting my life and this way and this way and that way. There's a difference between doing that and just for no reason out of the blue going, oh my gosh, did you see the dress that like, you know, Karen was wearing today. She looked so disgusting and like, you know, that's a very extreme example, but you know,
00:19:28
Speaker
people are very capable of saying extremely hurtful and mean things to other people so that is a big goal is just to focus on no more gossiping about other people and a great way that I am learning to achieve that is just to pretty much not surround yourself or surround myself, sorry I should speak in first person but just to not surround myself around people that gossip will bring you down or a negative impact on
00:19:52
Speaker
you and your life, sorry me and my life. And especially I have discovered lately that there are a lot of people in my life that are so like great to help me grow and there are other people that are really trying to bring me down. So it is just a matter of finding out who are the people that you want to keep in your life and yeah just trying to
00:20:16
Speaker
really culture beautiful friendships of people and to not gossip about other people and especially like what I've learned to say and this is just a tip I will do an episode in the future hopefully in the next couple of weeks just to talk about gossiping really just to talk about how on earth do we deal with a toxic environment at school because I know when I was at school
00:20:37
Speaker
I went to an old girls school and it was insane because all the girls would do was just gossip and talk about other girls, about boys, about life, about their family, whatever, you know, their siblings, whatever drama that people could squeeze out. It was there, right? So I think that gossiping is such a big factor in school. I think it definitely drops a little bit more in university because people are sort of with the group and the friends that they want to be with a little bit more like they can pick and choose just a little bit more
00:21:03
Speaker
if university is the choice that you are going to take for your tertiary education, that is. And I would say in the workplace as well, it changes all again. So it is very different going from school to tertiary uni to tertiary education, and specifically uni, and then going into the workplace. And I have experienced gossiping and different difficult situations in all three of those environments. So, yeah, if you guys do want me to do an episode about that in the future,
00:21:31
Speaker
And do you know that a couple of people actually have come up to me and asked me questions about how to manage gossiping? Like how do you be in a friend group that is constantly just gossiping about other people? Like how do you be friends with people that actually talk about you behind your back? Like I can talk about all of that and that has been asked personally just like friends of mine have asked questions about that to me. So I'm super happy to talk about that. But yeah, that's just a big goal of mine to focus on no gossiping about other people because I know I hate when it's done to me and
00:22:01
Speaker
I have some really hurtful stories about when people have actually gone behind my back and gossiped about me and it's come back to me.
00:22:07
Speaker
and it's just crazy what people will do just to get like a little bit of attention or just to bring like the spotlight to them for a couple seconds and let them talk but they're actually talking bad about someone you know like it's just always so crazy anyway not gonna dwell on it too much but that is a great podcast episode for the future um goal number uh four is to start doing more girls nights that is just something i'm really looking forward to doing i love a good girls night just to you know
00:22:35
Speaker
do all the girly things, and watch a cool chick flick, and paint your nails, and do your hair, and face masks, and the whole shebang, and yeah, just, I mean, that kind of, I know I just said no more gossiping, but, you know, girls nights always come with a little bit of gossiping, but it's different, I guess. It's very contradictory of me. I wouldn't say like the bad kind of gossiping, I would kind of just say like the very innocent, like flirtatious, like, ooh, who likes who? But then again, like that can also go very negatively, so maybe I don't encourage that too much,
00:23:05
Speaker
girls' nights. Girls' nights are girls' nights for the girly girls and it's always very fun to have a girls' night. I would love to do it more. So that is goal number four. So moving on into the study category now. Actually just before I do I just want to quickly touch on gossiping and just say like what I said before

Academic Goals

00:23:25
Speaker
about having a girls night, I didn't mean bad gossiping. I meant the kind of gossiping that is very harmless and it's just so fun and it's just because all the girls are together and you're just having a bit of a blast and you can get a bit carried away but you're not actually being mean to anyone. The kind of gossiping
00:23:43
Speaker
that I'm talking about in goal number three for relationships, when I was saying focus on no gossiping about others, it's really the mean hurt for gossiping that I'm talking about. It's not the stuff where I need to vent to my friends about an issue that's actually hurting me or involving me, but it's more just the stuff that has no meaning and you're just talking about someone for the sake of it. Anyway, got that out of the way, I just needed to clarify for a second the study, goals,
00:24:09
Speaker
Tip, oh, sorry, not tip, sorry, goal number one is to finish all my assignments on time. Woo-hoo, I really hope I can do it. It's something that actually I have kept up with since this year has started. That's something that I've been doing a lot. Keeping up with my assignments. I'm sorry, not this year, what am I talking about? I'm talking about last year, towards the end of the year, I was keeping up with a lot of my assignments and I was super happy with the progress that I was making.
00:24:36
Speaker
Um, and I usually don't keep up with all my assessments. So that was a big win for me. And I want to continue that throughout 2023. Goal number two is to get a D minimum in all my uni work. So a D is not like, like a D is a distinction. D is not like a, is lower than like a C. Um, if you're like listening and you're in school right now, um, obviously you go like ABCD and in university you go like a high distinction. So an HD, a D, so the distinction.
00:25:04
Speaker
And then you go credit and then, oh, I can't remember what else from there. But anyway, it is always different things. So a distinction is like basically getting like an A and A plus sort of thing. I really wanna get a distinction in all of my work and that is a minimum. I do actually have to keep that up as part of my GPA minimum requirement to stay in my honors course. But that's something I think is definitely achievable. Again, all of these goals I have said can really be made into smart goals
00:25:33
Speaker
I'm just giving very rough overviews because I kind of have my own subconscious smart goals that I have in the back of my head about how I'm going to achieve it. So, goal number three for the study category is to keep up with my lectures and I'm not allowed to do any playbacks. Well, I actually haven't stuck to that at all this year, like at all, but that's okay.
00:25:56
Speaker
Yeah that basically means that I need to attend all of my classes at the time that they're playing and I'm not allowed to go and play them back. Obviously I can play them back after I've attended the class but it's really just to go and attend it straight away because that's always great because I obviously am doing my uni.
00:26:13
Speaker
course online so I am able just to ask the psychology professor or lecturer or whatever a question like real time like in the second on that moment through zoom or whatever and that's just a lot more helpful than you know playing back and having to kind of hope like hope that someone else ask the same question as you or ask the question that you're thinking about stays the time to be having to like email the lecturer
00:26:35
Speaker
And, you know, sort of not waste their time, but, you know, waste their time in the sense that you could have just been there at the class. I guess it always is hard with work and things like that that I can't always, you know, show up to the class and watch it real time, but I will try my very best.
00:26:53
Speaker
And study goal number four is to learn to deal with failures and mess ups. That's something that I put in the study category because I do fail a little bit. I might not understand a statistic or a question and I get frustrated that I just can't do it. So it's really just learning to deal with these mess ups and these failures. It's okay if I don't do well in this assessment, even though that's one of my goals, but if I do mess up or if I do fail, it's okay. I just need to acknowledge that.
00:27:25
Speaker
Yeah, so those are all of those four goals under the study category.

Podcasting Ambitions

00:27:29
Speaker
Under the podcast category, my first big, big, big goal, and you guys can definitely help me with this by the way, is to get 1,000 listeners and 1,000 Instagram followers. Okey dokey, yes.
00:27:44
Speaker
This is the part where I plead my case to you guys to help me reach that goal. Please and thank you. 1000 listeners is a big goal for me for the podcast because I'm able to monetize after that point and I'm able to put in ads. I'm able to earn a bit of commission like affiliate links and everything like that. It always just helps once you have 1000 listeners. It is reaching that big 1K goal that I'm just so stoked for. And I know I can do it if I'm consistent in my work and I'm putting out valuable content
00:28:14
Speaker
etc etc etc the best way you guys could help that I would really really love is if you were able to share this episode or share this podcast this channel with your family and your friends I would be so grateful guys please just even one person like if one person shares it then
00:28:33
Speaker
boom, like before you know it, we'll have heaps and heaps of listeners. And it's not really, I don't want people to still listen to it once and then never come back to this podcast again. I want really people to listen to an episode and go, wow, I really want to hear more about that. Or, you know, I want to hear more about what Mary or whoever the podcast, like professional guest star is for that episode. I want to hear more what they have to say on this topic or that topic and create a bit more of like, you know, like you can email us or DM me or whatever and, you know, create a bit more of a conversation around that.
00:29:03
Speaker
Um, so if you guys do know somebody, you have a friend, a family, a cousin, just someone from school or someone from work who you think will really enjoy listening to learning how to like, you know, study tips and lifestyle tips and lifestyle inspiration and just how to, um, you know, be in the know about like the world we live in today and how to really be successful in your studies and everything like that. I would really appreciate it if you would send it to as many people as you think would fit into any one of those categories. Anyone who would check the box.
00:29:32
Speaker
And yeah, I think that, I think, I just think we can do it, honestly. 1K listeners, a-z-z-z. In terms of Instagram followers, if you are not following Instagram at allthingseducation21, I would really love if you would go jump on board and give it a follow. Yeah, again, it's something that's achievable, probably something I have to focus a little bit more on Instagram to achieve. Like if you're not already following, I'd really appreciate it if you were following.
00:30:01
Speaker
There actually is pretty cool content on there. There's a lot of motivational stuff, a lot of lifestyle stuff. I am brought to you a little bit more into the lifestyle side of things, so very aesthetic content if you're interested. But that is my first big goal.
00:30:14
Speaker
And once I've achieved it, I'm hoping that it will only grow from there. So yes, that is my first goal of a podcast. My second goal is to record valuable content rich episodes. Hopefully you're finding this very like content rich and valuable. I think that every episode I release should be valuable. And I know sometimes I just want to record an episode and not really think about what I'm going to record before I actually record it.
00:30:40
Speaker
I need to remind myself that I need to sit down and I actually need to plan on the episode before I just hit record because There's just no point like that's just not gonna be valuable for you guys I'm just gonna be blabbering on and there's gonna be like no important information in there that's really gonna be worthy to listen to and that will hinder my 1k listener goal, so Recording valuable content rich episodes is yeah big goal of mine. Hopefully so far. They are valuable. They're content rich I would say they are content rich
00:31:11
Speaker
And I hope they're valuable. So yeah, that's my second goal. My third goal is to release my episodes weekly without fail. I did mention that at the start of this episode. And that is a big goal just to release every single Sunday evening. So if you haven't already, please hit the subscribe like bell or button or whatever it is, whatever platform you're looking at and.
00:31:33
Speaker
Every Sunday evening, that is when these episodes are coming out. So you're able to listen to it on your Monday morning. So when you, you know, you're driving to school or to work or to uni or whatever tertiary education or secondary education path you're taking, you'll be able to listen to this and it will be a great way just to start off your Monday morning. You know, Mondays always are just not great. Many people say, I honestly love Mondays, but most people don't, right? So I just have to take it for most people and it's a great way to start your Monday. So definitely hit the subscription.
00:32:02
Speaker
like the notification bell button wherever you're listening and that is a big goal just to release it every single week so you guys can look forward to something to start your Monday right and my fourth goal is to network with other podcasters I'm really excited for this because um it's something that yeah I'm really excited to get some new guests I've been in communication with a bunch of amazing amazing professionals and got some great interviews lined up so get keen for that
00:32:30
Speaker
and networking with other podcasters is a big goal because I'm able just to, yeah, just to talk about different things, like talk on their podcast, talk on my podcast, like, you know, all of that. So, yes, that is it for the first section of this episode. And now on to the next section about how you guys can glow up and the amazing 2023 guide to glow up in this summer season.

Defining 'Glow Up'

00:32:58
Speaker
Okay, so all of the tips I'm gonna be giving, you can probably find them somewhere on the internet. But I'm gonna give you my personal take on them, and hopefully you guys will be able to get a bit of an insight about how you guys can glow up. First of all, I just wanna say, you're beautiful no matter what. But I do understand wanting to feel extra refreshed. I just wanna clarify, I guess, what a glow up is. I'm using quotations, although you can't see me, but I'm using quotations right now. A glow up for me is
00:33:26
Speaker
feeling your best self, feeling like you have lots of energy, like you're feeling motivated to do whatever. You can, you know, run a marathon and you're going to feel great after it. And it's feeling confident in your own body, in your skin. You're looking beautiful without, you know, wearing excessive makeup or like, you know, having to get a haircut like every single week for the guys, you know, because you have to make it perfect the whole time. Like, you know,
00:33:54
Speaker
It's just feeling your confident best self and you do look good like physically you're looking you know fit active and healthy but you also are not doing things that are like you know in like over a long term of a period it's going to be like detrimental to your health. So that's why I think a glow up is it's just really putting your time and effort into things without overworking yourself.

Productivity Tips

00:34:18
Speaker
So first thing I can suggest is waking up the same time every single morning.
00:34:24
Speaker
It sounds ridiculous, um, because I know weekends you want to sleep in a little bit, um, but I would recommend waking up at the same time every single morning and in the weekends, maybe you can give yourself like a one hour sleep in, one hour max. Um, waking up, okay, this sounds bonkers, but if you wake up at like 5am or 6am, you're waking up before everyone else wakes up in your household. Hopefully it gives you more time to like work out and plan your day.
00:34:51
Speaker
you know, you can scroll through social media for like a little bit longer or you can just be more productive. You can get like study done in the morning and you can get half an hour of homework done in the morning. There's just so much that's beneficial. 5am, 6am, it sounds extreme, but if you just slowly work your way backwards, it's just going to help you so much more.
00:35:08
Speaker
The thing that goes hand in hand with waking up early is going to bed not too late or early in the morning, which means that you should really be in bed by like, you know, late as 11 p.m. If you're waking up 6 a.m., later should be 11 p.m. I'd recommend get at least, you know, minimum six hours sleep, but seven, eight hours is ideal. When I say recommend, you know, I'm obviously no expert. I'm just giving tips that
00:35:36
Speaker
have helped me in the past. And please don't follow my advice word for word. Just go talk to a doctor first or a nutritionist or a dietician or whoever is the right person to speak to for any of these tips I'm gonna talk about. Yeah, a six to eight hour sleep I think is recommended for people from 18 to 22 I wanna say, maybe 16 to 22, I'm not quite sure. But you need less and less sleep as you grow older and you really, really need that eight hours of sleep if you are 15 or 16.
00:36:05
Speaker
because your body is growing and everything like that, right? So, waking up, you know, 6am and if you're going to bed at like 10, 11, that's solid. I would say that's super solid. You're getting all the sleep that you need and you're able just to get ahead of your day. Your brain is most active between 4am to 6am in the morning. I'm pretty sure I say that tip like every single time in every single podcast episode, but it's so true.
00:36:26
Speaker
And it is a scientific fact, so I can quote it. But that means that you are waking up between that really active period where your brain is excited and engaged and motivated and ready, and you can get so much done in the morning, trust me. Okay, so next thing you can do to glow up is to start having a journal, guys and girls. Ladies and gents, this is the best thing for you. Honestly, I've just started journaling this year. I should put it in one of my goals. But my kind of goal I have, that's,
00:36:56
Speaker
not like not secretive just something I just didn't write down was to journal every single night before bed um or anytime I had a spare moment and I was really able to reflect on the day or I've done a lot in the day journaling is a really great way just to express your emotions convey how you feel like I'm not doing any of the dear diary today I did this like I'm not Elena Gilbert I'm not doing any of that vampire diary stuff um I'm just really just conveying my thoughts particularly my emotions so I'm saying like
00:37:25
Speaker
for example, today I felt really angry because this particular thing happened and I was frustrated about that because I couldn't do this and that and this made me feel sad or whatever you know like that's just a very vague example but I could say also today I felt really happy because I released a podcast episode and I felt like my
00:37:46
Speaker
goal to release that today was accomplished so I'm feeling satisfied and things like that and they could just be like you know one or two lines on the journal page and I also say what I'm looking forward to for tomorrow I also can write down things like what really inspired me today or what I'm really sorry for today what really made me happy what made me feel excited for the next day to come things like that that's really great just to write down your thoughts
00:38:12
Speaker
before bed or whenever you have a spare minute, it improves your mental health pretty much. And it sounds silly because journaling can seem very much like a childish thing or it can seem like a very girly, girly thing. But I know plenty of guys who journal and it's great for your mental health. I think that it's not really specific to any kind of gender. It's just something that is a great way to reflect and be mindful
00:38:36
Speaker
of the day that has happened and looking forward to the day to come. It is really just a great way to reflect on the past, but still being present, like living in the present moment, but reflecting on the day that has happened, if that makes sense. So journaling is great. I only use one page a day. That's just kind of my thing and it doesn't have to fill up the whole page. It can be messy writing and no one's going to read it like I can trust.
00:39:00
Speaker
I guess, you know, I was always very skeptical because I was thinking, you know, someone in my family's going to go burst into my room and read my diary, like that's just, you know, whatever. But I think if it's just more of a reflection about the day that's happened, I think it's a really great way just to consolidate your thoughts. Anyway, not going to ramble on any more about that.
00:39:17
Speaker
The third way to glow up is to really learn something.

Health and Wellness Routines

00:39:20
Speaker
Learn a skill, a language, a trick, a yoga position. It's really, really great to spend, I don't know, maybe from 10 to 30 minutes a day really honing this skill. It could be anything from maybe you could try and program a software.
00:39:41
Speaker
Or you could like, you know, coding or whatever it is, right? Or you can learn to read a book in French or Italian or Spanish or whatever. You could learn to do pottery or like, it's kind of like, and it becomes a hobby eventually as well, but it's kind of just something that is a really good outlet, a really good way to de-stress, and it's a great way to activate a different part of your brain.
00:40:05
Speaker
So that is the third tip. The fourth tip I would recommend to glow up in 2023 is to exercise. Now I couldn't get away without saying it, could I? Exercise is so great. Honestly, the best way that I've been loving it right now is I put on the vampire diaries and I do my ab exercise. It sounds so crazy, but it works. I tilt my laptop. So it's sitting on the edge of my desk and I kind of just lie on the ground and do my ab exercise, my core workout. And it's great because
00:40:33
Speaker
I'm exercising, I'm not overexerting my body, I am obviously helping my body stay healthy and strong, and then I can obviously dedicate more time to go to the gym later that evening or whatever it is, you know, or the next morning, etc. But that's a great way just to spend some time, you know, keeping your body active and fit and healthy. It's great because it gives you a good mental health state of mind and also a great physical health as well.
00:40:59
Speaker
Cardio and core strength and HIIT workouts are always my top three favorites. I don't really always have the goal in mind to lose weight, but it's more just to be healthier. And I think that the whole idea of a glob is just to be healthier, look healthier, feel healthier, just be healthier, right? So this is another crazy one and people could hate me or love me for it. I don't know. But another tip to glow up is really just to
00:41:28
Speaker
take some time to be with yourself every single day. So you can't really like, okay, I would, I would consider this like maybe meditation or a breathing exercise or something of the like, but maybe perhaps just before you do your journaling for the day or something, I just spend two, three minutes, really not long at all. Um, and I don't really set a timer, but I just breathe in, I breathe out and really just focus on every single part of my body. What feels sore, what feels relaxed, is anything clenched. Like, you know what I mean?
00:41:57
Speaker
um just relax and let my body just yeah just relax and it's great just to sit in silence and just to breathe and it's a really good way just to practice your mindfulness it gives yourself just a moment just to be like do you know what i mean it's it's really great and you're being present you're not thinking about the future of the past um and i think this is great right before journaling i often do it actually because
00:42:25
Speaker
It's like right, yeah, right before I journal, I kind of just sit there because it's a nice way to calm the body, clear the mind of anything that has been bothering you throughout the day and you're able to reflect on the day properly. So you're being present and then you're about to reflect on the past. So I don't know. It's just a really great way just to link everything together. Another great thing is to do skincare routine. So I said that was a goal of mine before, but really maybe if you're just not good at your skincare routine, just add one element in every single day. Maybe you don't have a skincare routine.
00:42:53
Speaker
So just start off with, I'm going to wash my face. I'm just going to buy a facial cleanser and I'm going to wash my face every single day. By the way, if you're not sure about what different products to buy, Neutrogena is always the best. Neutrogena is spelt. Let me get it for you. It is spelt. N-E-U-T-R-O-G-E-N-A. I use the Fresh Foaming Cleanser. It's great. That is just a great, like, gentle makeup, you know, nice, gentle skin cleanser.
00:43:21
Speaker
That is always great because I'm able to just wash my face, feel clean. And that's a great way to start if you haven't started a skincare routine before or you don't really know how. And you can always add in things after that like a vitamin C serum or you can do like eye drops or anything like that vitamin C based things or you know, there's just there's a lot of different things that you can do. But always just making sure that you are feeling your skin with the right nutrients that you need.
00:43:50
Speaker
especially if you suffer from things like acne or breakouts or if you do have really clear skin or maybe you have large pores or whatever it is. It's always good just to have a great skincare routine and there are so many different sources on the internet that can help you culture a great skincare routine into your everyday routine and yeah, so that was
00:44:12
Speaker
The next tip and the tip off of that is on top of, I guess, exercising, it's always good to spend time outdoors. So I always like to, you know, obviously do my exercise inside, but it's always going to take 10, 15 minutes every single day to spend in the sunshine, especially during the summertime right now. It is so great because you were able just to go outdoors, go for a swim, go to the beach, do whatever you got to do, you know, just walk in nature if you want. It's a really great way, I think, to get rid of anxiety,
00:44:40
Speaker
It boosts your serotonin so your happiness like dopamine Hormones and improves your mood and it is a really good thing to improve your day So every single time I'm at work whenever I'm on break. I will always always go outside I will spend you know however long I'm able to outside in the sunshine just soaking up a little bit of vitamin D and that's a great way just to calm my mind and just to feel
00:45:06
Speaker
like just one with nature you know just you know just being outside and experiencing the outdoors it's great okay so another thing that i would recommend is to glow up is to be consistent with everything so it's really just being consistent in every single aspect or area of your life as much as you can handle of course so being consistent for example in your exercise in your skincare

Value of Consistency

00:45:28
Speaker
If you're spending every single day outside, make sure it is consistently, you know, 15, 20 minutes a day. You know, whatever it is, just constantly being consistent gives your body a sense of routine stability and you feel safe. So that is a great way just to obviously boost your mental health and just to reassure yourself that you are okay and you are improving and you're growing and everything is well and great. You know what I mean? So that is another tip just to be consistent, consistent in your, you know,
00:45:57
Speaker
in your assignments, in your grades, be consistent in the time you spend with family and friends. Obviously, when I say consistent, I don't mean like you set a time, you're like, okay, mum, I have half an hour to talk to you and that's it. And it's half an hour every single day. You know, like that's a bit crazy. But it's just a matter of spending time and being consistent in what you do. So every activity you do doesn't have to be consistent in the amount of time you spend.
00:46:19
Speaker
but more just consistent in the fact that you do that same sort of habit or the same sort of goal every single day and that will eventually turn into a habit. Anyway, my next tip for you guys to glow up in 2023 is to read.

Benefits of Reading

00:46:34
Speaker
Reading is really great. I think, I know it is so great. I love sharing my book of the week with you guys because
00:46:42
Speaker
It's always a great way just to share what I'm into, what I love reading, and I think that you should always share with your friends what you are interested in reading right now as well. Obviously there are things like audiobooks and e-books that you can read as well. I do love the beauty of a hardcover book though, there is something special about that. A physical book is just so great because I'm able to literally put the pages and the smell of the book and everything, the nostalgia of that is just beautiful.
00:47:08
Speaker
I do love a physical book but of course reading online and on kindles and everything like that is a great way to deepen your knowledge as well. You don't necessarily just have to read fiction books, read non-fiction books, read biographies, anything that will stimulate your brain. It's always great to read fiction every now and again though as well. But just reading in general increases your focus and your knowledge and your self-confidence and it just deepens your mind and
00:47:37
Speaker
everything about it is just phenomenal. So I recommend, I mean, I shouldn't recommend anything really, but I love to read like maybe two chapters a day, depending on how long the chapters are. I love to read kind of self-help books as well. Self-help books are great because I mean, you're helping yourself by reading them, you know? Like they're always great just to deepen in different areas of your life and it's great just to, yeah, really, what's the word I'm looking for? Kind of, you're just trying to spend the time to,
00:48:07
Speaker
actively progress and grow. So that is something that I recommend just reading like a chapter or two a day, 20 pages a day, whatever it is. It's gonna strengthen your mind, it's gonna strengthen the way you think and the way you perceive the world. Be careful about the books you read because books really influence you. You'd be surprised what kind of books
00:48:27
Speaker
will influence your mood for the week especially after reading a fiction novel and it has a really sad ending. I feel as though I'm a little bit depressed for a couple of days after because I just don't like the world I'm living in because I'm like this world is me, don't you pickle it, why did you write such a sad ending? So that is that tip.

Hydration Importance

00:48:45
Speaker
And my very last tip, this is a great way to blow up and I know so many people say it all the time but this is something that
00:48:53
Speaker
Truly, I have tried and tested and I see phenomenal results. I'll give you a little tip. We'll play a little Q&A. It is something that is very abundant in the world. However, we cannot drink all of it all the time because most of it is very salty. Do we know what it is? It's water, yes. Drink water every single day. I can't remember the exact amount that people are supposed to be drinking. I think it differs slightly depending on your age.
00:49:21
Speaker
drinking water with every meal at least a minimum like like to have like you know three to four glasses a meal so that's what you know if you're having three meals a day that's about 12 glasses of water a day and i think that's pretty good if you have water bottle as well um i really like to drink water um hopefully like you know i just i just sip it wherever i go i'm constantly just drinking water and i think it's great if you invest in like a cute little water bottle as well that can really motivate you
00:49:47
Speaker
especially we have this little times on the side and says from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. you didn't drink this much water, like those little motivational things, I think they are super great to keep you on track. It is really hard to say motivated and drink water though, I would say. But, you know, so much of our body, like such a huge percentage of our body is made up of water. Water literally fuels us and it's great for the mind, it's great for your health overall, it is great for, you know,
00:50:16
Speaker
headaches to relieve the pain. Everything about that is so great for your skin as well. The glop is a real, oh my goodness, the glop is so great. I would recommend hopefully a litre of water a day. I would say that's pretty good. If you're hitting a litre in half, then you're solid.
00:50:37
Speaker
That's something I'm really trying to achieve. I should have put that in my goals as well. But yeah, drinking water, please do not neglect it. By the way, you can always tell if you need to drink more water is if you think about like a liquid, if you think about drinking water and you're like, oh my goodness, I'm really craving water right now. If your mouth is starting to go a little bit dry or you're getting a little bit of saliva or whatever it is, you're like, yeah, maybe I need to drink some water. And another great indication is if your lips are dry.
00:51:02
Speaker
So if your lips are dry or if you're getting headaches, then potentially it means you drink more water. But again, I'm not a doctor, so I do not know. But I would please just please, please drink a water. That's all I'm asking.
