Introduction to Expat Brad Podcast
00:00:01
Speaker
Hey, welcome back to the Expat Brad podcast.
00:00:04
Speaker
This is Salman Qureshi with his podcast voice.
00:00:10
Speaker
I practice this all week, so I sound so good when I'm speaking on this podcast, but of course,
00:00:16
Speaker
clearly it's not working um it's not working people it's uh it's that time of the week where we talk about the most important things in the world which is basically my view my perception on things as they happened all right so get ready for a real roller coaster of i don't know i don't know i've um
00:00:43
Speaker
I'm still getting used to sometimes the fact that there's a change in the weekend out here in the UAE.
Weekend Changes and WFH Realities
00:00:51
Speaker
It's a funny one because your mindset is like it's already Friday, it's Thursday, Friday should be the weekend.
00:01:02
Speaker
No, I got one more day of work and then it's the weekend.
00:01:05
Speaker
And also the amount of inconvenience caused to me because I chose Monday because usually it's a day.
00:01:14
Speaker
The second day of the week is usually when it's quietest the most for me.
00:01:18
Speaker
And I thought this would be really easy to follow as a routine to record my podcast.
00:01:24
Speaker
And then they went ahead and changed the weekend.
00:01:26
Speaker
And now it's the first day of the week.
00:01:27
Speaker
And I'm all like, oh, I got to do this stuff.
00:01:31
Speaker
But I gotta say I feel better than most people who are getting, you know, you guys would have had a great weekend and now you have to go into the office and that kind of sucks on so many levels while I sit in my pajamas and record this.
00:01:44
Speaker
All right, now I know you're picturing me.
00:01:50
Speaker
Okay, go ahead and do it.
00:01:51
Speaker
This is really ugly pajamas anyway.
Office Life vs. Self-Help Dreams
00:01:54
Speaker
But, you know, at the same time, there's a lot of stuff about being in the office I miss, to be honest.
00:02:01
Speaker
There's, you know, you get a bad boss who can tell you off and you feel miserable about life.
00:02:07
Speaker
And then you come to that point where you're like, I'm going to change everything.
00:02:11
Speaker
And then you either apply for life or start something of your own.
00:02:15
Speaker
I miss that so much.
00:02:18
Speaker
I'm really making you guys feel bad, right?
00:02:19
Speaker
Okay, jokes aside, don't.
00:02:21
Speaker
All right, I think way too many self-help, you know, authors and fakers out there, life coaches and stuff are out there going, do what you love.
00:02:33
Speaker
Do what you really, really love.
00:02:35
Speaker
And I'm like, stop it, man.
00:02:37
Speaker
No one loves their job or whatever they do for a living 100% of the time.
00:02:43
Speaker
There are days when I do gigs and I'm like, I want to kill myself after I've done that gig.
00:02:49
Speaker
There are clients I meet or shows I do and I'm like, oh, I wish I...
00:02:53
Speaker
hadn't turned this into a career.
00:02:55
Speaker
Seriously, it's just crazy.
00:02:57
Speaker
You got to just understand the stuff you do for maybe, I guess, for money or whatever, or, you know, for living.
00:03:05
Speaker
And a lot of times that's fine, man.
00:03:09
Speaker
Get a hobby instead.
00:03:10
Speaker
You know, do something for fun.
00:03:12
Speaker
Let off a little steam.
Critiquing Self-Help Clichés
00:03:14
Speaker
You're probably just lonely, to be honest, you know.
00:03:17
Speaker
I need meaning in my life.
00:03:19
Speaker
Nah, you just need a girlfriend or a boyfriend.
00:03:21
Speaker
I don't know, you know.
00:03:23
Speaker
And yeah, that's basically my take on that self-help stuff, you know.
00:03:29
Speaker
People just need to relax about it and stop telling people their life will change when they do this and that and blah, blah, blah.
00:03:38
Speaker
I want people to be honest.
00:03:39
Speaker
I want these self-help people to be honest and go, listen, look at someone and go, listen, you, you do, you do what you're doing.
00:03:46
Speaker
You keep doing that, that accounting job.
00:03:48
Speaker
Cause you know what?
00:03:49
Speaker
Maybe, maybe it's best for you.
00:03:52
Speaker
Maybe it is what you really want.
00:03:53
Speaker
You know, I'm looking at you and thinking you're doing actually quite well.
00:03:58
Speaker
I would have thought you'd be doing worse the way you are.
00:04:03
Speaker
That'd be really fun to watch.
00:04:05
Speaker
But I guess it wouldn't sell books and hope.
00:04:07
Speaker
And that stuff is what sells really well and makes a lot of money.
00:04:12
Speaker
Yeah, but this weekend thing, man, I have to say, I find it really funny when people get upset about the weekend.
00:04:20
Speaker
There were a lot of people who were like, just Friday is the day I spend with my family.
00:04:24
Speaker
It's the day we all get together and blah, blah, blah.
00:04:29
Speaker
And how can they just change our weekend?
00:04:32
Speaker
And I kind of find it really funny because...
00:04:36
Speaker
Yeah, well, then just do it on a Saturday now or a Sunday instead.
00:04:41
Speaker
You know, people get used to it.
00:04:42
Speaker
They just need to complain.
Humor in Weekend Complaints
00:04:44
Speaker
We just want to complain.
00:04:45
Speaker
And 90 percent of these people are complaining out here.
00:04:47
Speaker
What I find really funny is they're all trying to apply to Canada where the weekend is Saturday and Sunday.
00:04:55
Speaker
So what's their big plan?
00:04:57
Speaker
to go over and move in and have enough of their people and have friday declared um as the weekend i think i think that's their plan i suppose uh that's how crazy we are as people but i'm getting used to it it's just mentally you do need to get used to it sometimes like i said you know you're like at thursday and you're like ah weekend no one more day
NBA All-Star Weekend Criticism
00:05:19
Speaker
Speaking of weekends, it's the all-star weekend, man.
00:05:22
Speaker
See how smooth that segue was?
00:05:24
Speaker
You didn't even notice, did you?
00:05:26
Speaker
But now that I've pointed it out, you have.
00:05:28
Speaker
It's kind of dumb of me to do that, I suppose.
00:05:32
Speaker
Maybe I should have just been quiet and taken the success instead to speak up.
00:05:38
Speaker
uh but here we are and the all-star weekend was pretty decent i don't know what else people want people go you know the three-point shootout i'm just like what when was that exciting the last time it was exciting was maybe when larry bird was in on it you know has it ever been exciting after he left he's the only one made three point like hot maybe not curry i suppose and but they gotta if they want it to be entertaining it's gotta add something apart from the speed round
00:06:06
Speaker
You got to have this.
00:06:08
Speaker
I haven't watched the shootout.
00:06:10
Speaker
Is there further levels where people do different things?
00:06:12
Speaker
Like you need to have like shoot from the logo with your eyes closed kind of stuff going on.
00:06:17
Speaker
Eat a burrito while you're shooting the three point.
00:06:22
Speaker
Do it while you're being drowned.
00:06:25
Speaker
You know, just add the excitement again.
00:06:27
Speaker
People just, you know, either you complain or you watch.
00:06:29
Speaker
That's what it is.
00:06:30
Speaker
It's some people shooting threes and that's great.
00:06:34
Speaker
And the dunking competition.
00:06:36
Speaker
I had someone, one of my friends, a couple of my friends actually say, you know, it's not the same.
00:06:39
Speaker
And it was just boring.
Reflecting on NBA Nostalgia
00:06:41
Speaker
And I'm like, it always has been.
00:06:43
Speaker
It's only been great every like 10, 15 years.
00:06:46
Speaker
You know, there's a Jordan and Wilkins thing.
00:06:50
Speaker
Then the Vince Carter one, the Renaissance of the NBA dunking competition.
00:06:55
Speaker
And then the Zach, who was it?
00:06:58
Speaker
The 2016 guys, right?
00:07:00
Speaker
I'm forgetting names now.
00:07:02
Speaker
And that was exciting.
00:07:05
Speaker
And that was really cool.
00:07:06
Speaker
But have you noticed the frequency of those amazing dunking competitions are far and wide, my friends.
00:07:13
Speaker
So keep watching them in another 5-10 years when the human body will evolve a bit further.
00:07:20
Speaker
then you'll have a great dunking competition, maybe a three-handed dunk, because now we have three hands.
00:07:27
Speaker
It could go crazy.
00:07:32
Speaker
And just remember the timeline.
00:07:34
Speaker
We might be able to speed it up for you if...
00:07:37
Speaker
Genetics come into play and we can speed up DNA changes and whatnot.
00:07:43
Speaker
Some of that stuff's happening.
00:07:45
Speaker
We're growing meat in a lab.
00:07:47
Speaker
Maybe we'll add some stuff to the human body or maybe that lab meat will turn us into something more than we are.
00:07:56
Speaker
Keep watching and there'll be a good one coming around hopefully before we die.
00:08:01
Speaker
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, guys.
00:08:03
Speaker
This is the other thing I kind of found interesting.
00:08:08
Speaker
about the NBA All-Star Weekend was Jordan making it, you know, because they're celebrating the 75th.
00:08:13
Speaker
I think he missed the photo shoot.
00:08:16
Speaker
And then as soon as he arrives, because he's got these car racing things, right?
00:08:20
Speaker
And he had two of his cars racing.
00:08:22
Speaker
So he came in from Florida, reached Cleveland.
00:08:24
Speaker
And he comes out, probably took a private jet, ran off immediately, made it, didn't make the picture.
00:08:30
Speaker
But as soon as he walks in, he looks at Magic Johnson and the video is kind of going viral right now.
00:08:36
Speaker
And he looks at him and says, he's the old dog.
00:08:38
Speaker
I challenge him, you know, let's put on our shoes.
00:08:40
Speaker
Let's go one on one.
00:08:41
Speaker
And it's kind of funny to watch.
00:08:43
Speaker
It's kind of, it's nice to see the camaraderie, camaraderie.
00:08:48
Speaker
What was the word?
00:08:49
Speaker
Camad, camaraderie.
00:08:51
Speaker
It's not coming out of my mouth now.
00:08:53
Speaker
It's nice to see the friendship between the two players, and it's cool.
Making All-Star Games Competitive
00:08:58
Speaker
But then the internet goes wild, right?
00:09:00
Speaker
This is the problem with us.
00:09:01
Speaker
We just take it to another extreme.
00:09:03
Speaker
Nice little moment, nice little fun banner, and then the internet kind of goes, oh, my God, I'd rather see that than the all-star matchup, right?
00:09:12
Speaker
Let's make it happen.
00:09:15
Speaker
It would be fun to watch.
00:09:16
Speaker
No, no, it wouldn't.
00:09:19
Speaker
You know who I'd love to see play against each other?
00:09:22
Speaker
Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan.
00:09:25
Speaker
But these two are not the Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan.
00:09:29
Speaker
We know these are two old people.
00:09:31
Speaker
Michael Jordan is actually coming off a little bit like an old angry man here.
00:09:34
Speaker
Like just go, come on, put your shoes on.
00:09:37
Speaker
We're going one on one now.
00:09:39
Speaker
It's not as cute anymore.
00:09:41
Speaker
It's not as impressive anymore when you're not a competitor out there.
00:09:46
Speaker
Now you're just like, I don't know.
00:09:48
Speaker
It just sounds bad.
00:09:49
Speaker
I love Michael Jordan, but that to me, I don't want to watch it.
00:09:52
Speaker
I don't want to watch two old people try to shoot.
00:09:56
Speaker
The whole time I'll be watching him going, please don't hurt your hips or something.
00:10:01
Speaker
I don't know, break a knee or whatever.
00:10:04
Speaker
I'd be worried more than I'd be enjoying the game.
00:10:07
Speaker
And then you just destroy your memory of what great athletes and great basketball players these guys were.
00:10:15
Speaker
If you don't realize, that's why people were pissed off at Michael Jordan's Washington Wizards term.
00:10:21
Speaker
And I know he put on, and the internet keeps reminding me,
00:10:25
Speaker
He put on great numbers and it was super good for a 40-year-old or for any athlete to average 20 points, play all the games, blah, blah.
00:10:34
Speaker
But at the same time, you know, I loved when he was competitive on a competitive team trying to win championships.
00:10:41
Speaker
And that was amazing.
00:10:43
Speaker
And I didn't need, you know, we didn't need this.
00:10:44
Speaker
And we definitely.
00:10:46
Speaker
definitely do not want to see Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan play at this age.
00:10:51
Speaker
So shut that shit up.
00:10:53
Speaker
Shut it down real fast.
00:10:56
Speaker
And stop talking about internet.
00:10:59
Speaker
I don't want to see something like that happen and ruin my sleep or something or just spend my day worried about how long it took them to recover.
00:11:10
Speaker
As a 40-year-old myself, I'm quite worried having come from a knee surgery as well.
00:11:15
Speaker
I care about the body a lot and our limitations, I'm very conscious of it now.
Final Thoughts on Work and Aging
00:11:20
Speaker
So that was kind of cool, though, to see.
00:11:25
Speaker
I haven't really sat down and watched the NBA All-Star Weekend, so it's kind of nice to just sit down, enjoy it, and watch some of this stuff.
00:11:32
Speaker
Even if it's not the most fun thing.
00:11:36
Speaker
They also need to get some skin in the game for the All-Star game.
00:11:40
Speaker
And what I mean by that is there's got to be some consequences.
00:11:44
Speaker
So if you – the result and the performance of the players on there, because, you know, they're not playing strong, D. They don't want to injure themselves.
00:11:52
Speaker
And they're playing up for the points.
00:11:53
Speaker
It's a shooting fest.
00:11:54
Speaker
They play until, what, 163 points.
00:11:55
Speaker
First team to 163 points.
00:12:00
Speaker
And I'd rather see a little bit of defense with them because then, you know, why do you watch the All-Star weekend?
00:12:06
Speaker
Because you get all the big players in, you're getting to watch all of them play together, and you can kind of, a little bit of it is like your imagination going, hey, Curry and LeBron on the same team, wow.
00:12:17
Speaker
But it's not really seeing it like that because these guys are playing it soft, right?
00:12:22
Speaker
And it's still a little bit of fun.
00:12:24
Speaker
But get the skin in, man.
00:12:26
Speaker
Get consequences in.
00:12:28
Speaker
Stuff like you lose some kind of percentage of your income.
00:12:35
Speaker
Maybe they're too rich for that.
00:12:37
Speaker
Something to do with the championship run.
00:12:42
Speaker
You know, you get my point, right?
00:12:44
Speaker
I'm running out of ideas right now.
00:12:46
Speaker
I didn't really come up with any ideas.
00:12:48
Speaker
But the core idea is to get it more competitive.
00:12:52
Speaker
Let them risk their limbs.
00:12:55
Speaker
That's what I want to watch.
00:12:57
Speaker
Sounds so sadistic.
00:12:58
Speaker
I was just preaching about how I'd be concerned about people getting old.
00:13:01
Speaker
But when you're young, come on, man.
00:13:04
Speaker
You can put in some effort and then we'll see some game.
00:13:07
Speaker
And I think that'll bring in the crowd again.
00:13:14
Speaker
NBA All-Star Weekend.
00:13:16
Speaker
Last time I watched it was 20, 30 years ago.
00:13:18
Speaker
I actually haven't sat down to watch it.
00:13:20
Speaker
So I just realized how old I'm getting.
00:13:23
Speaker
Why do I keep reminding you guys of that?
00:13:27
Speaker
So, you know, leaving you with some kind of cool messages here.
00:13:32
Speaker
The first one being don't chase what you think you need to chase and just enjoy your job.
00:13:37
Speaker
And the second, when you're old, just sit at home.
00:13:43
Speaker
Truly inspiring podcast from yours truly.
Call to Action and Gratitude
00:13:47
Speaker
I feel so bad about it now.
00:13:49
Speaker
I'm actually going to go out for a walk right now and banish these thoughts.
00:13:53
Speaker
And if you have any sense, you will not have listened to anything I've said and just enjoyed the ride and put it all away and get back to work and do something great with your life.
00:14:03
Speaker
Yeah, how about that for some strong self-help motivation?
00:14:10
Speaker
I've sat on a sofa in my pajamas and given you some self-help talk right there.
00:14:16
Speaker
And before I leave, I got to run now, guys.
00:14:20
Speaker
Have a good week ahead.
00:14:21
Speaker
I'll catch you in the next episode.
00:14:24
Speaker
Remember, do share, like, and subscribe to this stuff.
00:14:29
Speaker
And also get on Patreon and subscribe financially.
00:14:34
Speaker
So you just need to put in a dollar or two.
00:14:36
Speaker
But it goes a long way to help me keep this podcast going.
00:14:40
Speaker
Thank you very much for listening.
00:14:44
Speaker
Have a good week ahead.
00:14:46
Speaker
I do really love that.
