Introduction of Prime Space Podcast and Guest

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to Prime Space, a Prime Coaching Academy podcast with your host, Elias Scultori.
00:00:14
Speaker
Hello, my friends and fellow coaches.

Confidence in Coaching Value and Power

00:00:19
Speaker
I have a surprise for you.
00:00:20
Speaker
I don't think it's a surprise, but today it's not just me.
00:00:24
Speaker
We have my dear friend, Amy Rupert Donovan here.
00:00:28
Speaker
Hello, Amy.
00:00:29
Speaker
Hello, Elias.
00:00:31
Speaker
I'm back.
00:00:33
Speaker
And we are super thrilled that you're here to share this, the next 10, 15 minutes with us here.
00:00:40
Speaker
Amy, what are we going to talk about today?
00:00:43
Speaker
Well, I'm excited what we're going to talk about because it comes up a lot with coaches over the years, mentoring and training coaches.
00:00:53
Speaker
Confidence.
00:00:55
Speaker
Confidence.
00:00:56
Speaker
Confidence in what?

Legitimacy of Coaching as a Profession

00:00:59
Speaker
Well, really confidence in, in,
00:01:04
Speaker
the value you can bring and the power of coaching.
00:01:12
Speaker
So important.
00:01:13
Speaker
I appreciate that you wanted to talk about this.
00:01:16
Speaker
You mentioned this briefly in our prime brief this week.
00:01:21
Speaker
And here we have the opportunity to expand on this topic a little bit more on this episode.
00:01:30
Speaker
Yeah, the questions that we created here are how confident,
00:01:35
Speaker
are you in delivering value to our clients?
00:01:41
Speaker
How confident are you in the power of coaching?
00:01:44
Speaker
Those are the questions that are coming up for me as far as this important, crucial topic for us.
00:01:53
Speaker
Yeah.
00:01:54
Speaker
Yeah.
00:01:54
Speaker
And it is.
00:01:55
Speaker
And I think that we don't talk about this nearly enough.
00:02:00
Speaker
So let's do it.
00:02:03
Speaker
Where are we going to start?
00:02:04
Speaker
Well, let's talk about just and start with the legitimacy of our profession and how far we've come that this is a legitimate profession.
00:02:18
Speaker
And many of us know this because we were involved in developing it.
00:02:23
Speaker
from the time yourself included, at least, you know, from the time where coaching was barely defined to now a profession with a basic core competencies, a body of ethics, a body of knowledge, a regulatory board.

Coaching's Influence and Professional Confidence

00:02:46
Speaker
I mean, we've done all the things in this industry
00:02:50
Speaker
profession of ours that define what a profession is.
00:02:55
Speaker
Yeah, this is such a crucial point.
00:02:57
Speaker
And especially in my history, as my experience as a coach, I could see and I can go back and see the evolution of this profession.
00:03:10
Speaker
Yeah.
00:03:11
Speaker
how much work, especially the International Culture Federation, has done to establish very clear professional and ethical standards.
00:03:21
Speaker
And not just the standards, but all the processes around the standards to make sure that those standards are applicable, both professional and ethical standards.
00:03:31
Speaker
And as a result of that,
00:03:35
Speaker
it is estimated, I was just looking this online the other day, it is estimated that the coaching industry is worth $6.3 billion worldwide, which to me, yeah, it's a number, it's money, right?
00:03:51
Speaker
But to me, we would not be able to have an industry of this size if what we do
00:04:00
Speaker
is something so beautiful and so important.
00:04:03
Speaker
All the large organizations in the world, the larger corporations, government agencies, coaching is everywhere nowadays.
00:04:14
Speaker
It's everywhere in our society.
00:04:17
Speaker
We have professional coaches who are trained,
00:04:21
Speaker
and have gone through the paces of getting their certification and building their skills.
00:04:27
Speaker
And they are bringing the value and the mindset of coaching to these

Building Internal Confidence Through Practice

00:04:32
Speaker
arenas.
00:04:32
Speaker
So that to me is a beautiful evidence of the legitimacy of the profession in general that gives us a little boost of confidence in what we do.
00:04:44
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:04:45
Speaker
And, you know, at least when you consider we went from
00:04:49
Speaker
none of this.
00:04:50
Speaker
Yes.
00:04:51
Speaker
30 years ago, there was nothing literally to where we are today.
00:04:58
Speaker
And the countless thousands and thousands of hours people have put into this with their own blood, sweat and tears of volunteer hours, no less.
00:05:12
Speaker
Nobody gets paid for this stuff when you sit on committees with the ICF and
00:05:16
Speaker
You know, you spend multiple months and years sometimes developing this stuff.
00:05:23
Speaker
It's because the people that fuel that and shoulder in to do that work believe in the power of what we do.
00:05:35
Speaker
We wouldn't be able to grow the industry to this level if there wasn't something very special about what we do here.
00:05:45
Speaker
As we like to say here at Prime Coaching Academy, coaching is not just a skill set.
00:05:51
Speaker
It is a skill set, but it's not just a skill set.
00:05:53
Speaker
Coaching is truly a mindset.
00:05:55
Speaker
And there is something very special in that mindset of coaching that has made this industry grow and thrive in such a short period of time and so widespread.
00:06:12
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely.
00:06:14
Speaker
What about the, okay, so this is wonderful evidence, external evidence for us, but I feel like that there is something else.
00:06:24
Speaker
Yeah.
00:06:25
Speaker
Yeah.
00:06:26
Speaker
What goes on inside the coach?
00:06:28
Speaker
relative to confidence.
00:06:30
Speaker
I think that's a big conversation.
00:06:35
Speaker
But let's wade into it here.
00:06:37
Speaker
Yeah.
00:06:39
Speaker
And just to share, like before the podcast, we were discussing about this, and I mentioned like,
00:06:44
Speaker
Even practices that have been, there are centuries old, let's say, you know, music, I gave the example of music or medicine or being an engineer, you know, we know that these practices, these practices are not just a few decades old.
00:07:01
Speaker
These practices have been around in the history of humanity for a long time.
00:07:06
Speaker
The practitioner still needs to build internal confidence to be able to face an audience.
00:07:14
Speaker
A performer needs to build internal confidence to be able to face a concert or going in a theater.
00:07:24
Speaker
A surgeon needs to build confidence to go and perform a surgery.
00:07:29
Speaker
So there is, regardless of the external,
00:07:32
Speaker
that we have done a lot in the coaching industry, there is the internal confidence.
00:07:37
Speaker
How do we build this?
00:07:39
Speaker
Well, we start with practice, practice, practice, practice.
00:07:47
Speaker
The old adage.
00:07:50
Speaker
Yes, which we say a lot at Prime Coaching Academy.
00:07:53
Speaker
But really, it really does all stem from the practice that you're actually out there coaching, getting new clients, coaching a multitude and very diverse group of people that come through your practice, whether you're just starting out and maybe just doing pro bono coaching or you're into it now charging fees and and
00:08:18
Speaker
But every day is practice.
00:08:21
Speaker
Every time you coach somebody, it's practice.
00:08:24
Speaker
I don't know about you, Elias.
00:08:25
Speaker
I still consider it practice for me and learn all the time.
00:08:31
Speaker
100%.
00:08:31
Speaker
And I'm thinking here, it's not just for the new coach.
00:08:36
Speaker
This is for coaches that have been, you and I, as an example, that have been in the industry for a long time.
00:08:43
Speaker
You know, how often we start thinking like, oh, maybe that session wasn't good enough, or maybe I need to pay attention to this particular skill.
00:08:52
Speaker
Having that reflective practice that we talk so much is important.
00:08:56
Speaker
It's going to build our confidence and it's going to continue to maintain that confidence because of the practice.
00:09:04
Speaker
Yeah.
00:09:04
Speaker
And with that said, Ilya, how many times have you and I taken stuff down to the mats?
00:09:10
Speaker
Just, you know, really looking at these skills and pulling them apart and looking at our experiences with them and discussing it.
00:09:19
Speaker
So another area to get confidence is in dialogue with your peers.
00:09:26
Speaker
There's such rich conversation in that.
00:09:30
Speaker
And I don't think we give that enough credit either.
00:09:34
Speaker
100% know the community.
00:09:36
Speaker
I always, this seems to be like the motto of Elias.
00:09:40
Speaker
I'm always talking about community, community, community.
00:09:42
Speaker
But this is true for myself.
00:09:45
Speaker
I wouldn't be the coach that I am today without the community, not just for my practice, but the skills that I have today.
00:09:52
Speaker
So I am a firm believer of being in community, observing others, coaching,
00:09:58
Speaker
Being coached, having our own coach, it's something that oftentimes we minimize the importance of being coached, putting ourselves in the role of a client.
00:10:10
Speaker
We learn so much about that.
00:10:12
Speaker
So the practice is not just about the practice of being a coach, but it's the three roles that we always say, be a coach, be a client, and be an observer.
00:10:23
Speaker
That will build confidence inside of us.

Embracing Imperfection and Humility

00:10:27
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:10:28
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:10:29
Speaker
And going back to that community, Elias, I think that there's an element to this of us being able to be vulnerable with our peers to really discuss what are our challenges?
00:10:40
Speaker
What are we hesitant about?
00:10:43
Speaker
What are we, you know, we just had the most beautiful prime hour a couple of weeks ago where one of our members or the people on the prime hour brought in a great ethical situation for everyone to discuss
00:10:56
Speaker
The wisdom in that room, you know, I think some people surprise themselves that they knew much more than they did given a situation like that.
00:11:05
Speaker
And so it's to be able to bring our own vulnerability into our discussions with our peers in learning environments, or if you're being coached, to be able to say, I'm not sure about this.
00:11:17
Speaker
You know, I say it, Ilyas, every now and then, I'm not sure about this.
00:11:21
Speaker
Let's take a look at this.
00:11:24
Speaker
So it's it's being willing to do that without, you know, feeling like, oh, I should know this or I should be more confident around this or I should, you know, project a certain, you know, confidence that it might not necessarily be there.
00:11:44
Speaker
Yeah, manage perspectives, right?
00:11:49
Speaker
So something for us to be mindful of.
00:11:52
Speaker
And one thing that is coming up for me as we are saying, we are talking here, Amy, the idea that understanding and really being...
00:12:03
Speaker
ground ourselves in the idea that there is no such a thing as a perfect coaching conversation.
00:12:10
Speaker
We are always learning.
00:12:11
Speaker
There is no perfection here.
00:12:13
Speaker
And being humble in the fact that, yeah, perhaps next time I'm going to do this a little different and I'm going to experiment with this particular tool or I'm going to change a little bit the way I offer that question.
00:12:29
Speaker
This also, this whole process
00:12:31
Speaker
practice in experimentation support us in building confidence and realizing that the bottom line coaching is a meeting of human, one human to another human being.
00:12:48
Speaker
And we are there in that creating that space.
00:12:51
Speaker
And there is no expectation of perfection, but it is the idea of supporting the other individual and bringing the best of our abilities at every moment.

Lifelong Learning and Mentorship in Coaching

00:13:02
Speaker
Yeah, you know, I have a default, at least in that I still wonder after 30 years, you know, did I deliver all the value I could have today?
00:13:15
Speaker
And my answer, my default answer is always no.
00:13:17
Speaker
There's always more to learn.
00:13:19
Speaker
There's always more ways I can bring value into the coaching relationship and to my clients.
00:13:27
Speaker
And so that's just the growing edge, the constant growing edge.
00:13:32
Speaker
We're all on, every single one of us.
00:13:36
Speaker
That's why it's so important to have our own coaches and work with a mentor coach, work with a coach supervisor, and really be able to reflect and continue that.
00:13:47
Speaker
This is an ongoing.
00:13:49
Speaker
We're never done, right?
00:13:50
Speaker
We're never done.

Reflective Question on Building Confidence

00:13:51
Speaker
So I would love for us to conclude this with a question to our listeners here.
00:13:59
Speaker
What is it going to take?
00:14:02
Speaker
for you to build your confidence in your skills and in the value of coaching something for you to
00:14:08
Speaker
Reflect upon, talk with your peers, talk with your fellow coaches, talk with us, reach out, send us an email, let us know.
00:14:18
Speaker
And we are going to continue building our confidence, building our skills and bringing this wonderful value of coaching to our clients and to the organizations that we worked with.
00:14:31
Speaker
Amy, any final word here?
00:14:35
Speaker
No, I just, I think that question that you just posed, Ilias, is an important, a really, really important question that you should ask yourself often, not just once, but ask yourself often and be able to articulate an answer so that you can keep pushing yourself into greater realms of confidence.

Conclusion and Call to Action
