00:01:40
Speaker
Yeah, I can't be more excited than I am to cover this episode tonight because I know how much you were waiting for it. yeah And also, it's just a phenomenal episode.
00:01:52
Speaker
And the numbers are so intriguing just to see how they tie into Hurley's pre-island life and then also into the broader mysteries of the island. that I am stoked.
00:02:05

Yeah. But before we jump in, remember, listeners, that you can send your theories, feedback.

On-Island Events and Mysterious Numbers
00:02:31
Speaker
So this one kind of combining our first on-island and flashback. The episode begins with Hurley trying to decipher what Jyn is asking as they are working on building the new raft with Michael.
00:02:45
Speaker
And while building the new raft, Michael comes up with the idea to build a distress beacon. So Jack and Hurley come to Saeed to ask for his help, finding the way to Russo's camp so that they can also get a new battery.
00:03:00
Speaker
Saeed tries heavily to discourage them, saying, Rousseau is crazy and the maps are song lyrics mixed with equations. And then Hurley notices one of Rousseau's maps, as Jack and Saeed are arguing a bit, where she had written six numbers over and over again.
00:03:17
Speaker
Four, eight, 15, 16, 23, 42. And Hurley stares at the numbers ominously. And then we cut to the first flashback to Hurley's life before the crash of the plane.
00:03:29
Speaker
We see him watching a lottery drawing in his living room while wearing a polo shirt with a chicken on it and having conversations with his mother about her respecting his privacy. She also says, look at you, a grown man sitting at home on a Saturday night. You should go out and find yourself a woman.
00:03:46
Speaker
He's like, yeah, mom, I'll get right on that. But to Hurley's astonishment as he's watching the lottery reveal, his numbers are announced as the winning combination, making him a multimillionaire overnight.
00:03:58
Speaker
And Hurley faints and falls face down to the floor of
Hurley's Flashback and the Lottery Curse
00:04:06
Speaker
I gotta ask, why'd you say the numbers, man? why'd you Why'd you say them? You're asking for something bad to happen. Right? i have just cursed us. You have.
00:04:18
Speaker
I feel like this whole episode was based off of a distress beacon. which is cool and all, but I feel like we kind of low-key lost sight of it a little bit. don't know why think that.
00:04:29
Speaker
I thought, like, we kind of got out of the Distress Beacon area, and I'm very glad that we did, because it allowed us to get a lot more backstory and a lot more lore, if you will, than it just being, like, a one-off, like, oh, let's go get this Distress Beacon. Hmm.
00:04:44
Speaker
Saeed was very very, very, very, very scared of Rousseau. Maybe not scared is the right word, but like did not want to go to Rousseau. Yeah. Was very, very, very, very vocal about it too.
00:04:59
Speaker
Mm-hmm. I feel like early getting involved in something, like instead of just being like a comic relief a little bit. was really great to see.
00:05:10
Speaker
ah loved that. Like seeing him actually getting worried by these set up by the set of numbers in that whole thing. i do love the whole bit with him with his mom, his mom being like, why don't you find like a nice woman? He's just like, oh okay. He just doesn't.
00:05:25
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, so I wonder if the him fainting was like the start of it. That's kind of my question, if that was like the the the beginning or if he just fainted because he won the lottery.
00:05:37
Speaker
I don't know. But yeah, that's what I think. Yeah, such a cool episode. Just the the theme running throughout the entire episode. And yeah, it's amazing.
00:05:50
Speaker
Maybe the theme will run through the entire show. Hard to say.
Hurley's Suspicious Actions and Beach Confrontation
00:05:56
Speaker
And then back on island, Hurley wakes Saeed up in the middle of the night because he is staring at him creepily while he sleeps. And he says, hi, you awake? And Hurley says he couldn't sleep and asks if Saeed and Shannon ever figured out the meaning of the numbers that Rousseau wrote on her maps.
00:06:14
Speaker
Saeed says he thought it might be coordinates of some kind. And Hurley asks him about the cable that Saeed found when he was going to find Rousseau the first time. And Hurley wonders, you know, is her camp close?
00:06:28
Speaker
And so Saeed's kind of like, why do you want to know this? He starts becoming suspicious. And Hurley's like, oh, no reason, just curious. Says goodnight and goes back to his tent while sneakily hauling one of the maps under his shirt. Yeah.
00:06:42
Speaker
I was thinking that Hurley was going to do something. As soon as I saw him at Saeed's tent, I was like, okay, Hurley, what are you doing? what What are you really doing? Like, what's the actual significance of the numbers? You know, like, because it's got to mean something, right?
00:06:58
Speaker
Mm-hmm. I knew it was something was up as soon as he went to Saeed. And Saeed was like, what are you, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? He's like, oh, nothing, man. and And that's, that's another thing that I really liked about this episode is every time he was questioned, he would kind of just like, he was so bad at faking it.
00:07:14
Speaker
Like he was just like, like, ah he was just like, what do you, what do you need them or the, the, the, this information for? it Oh, nothing. Oh, I'm not going to do anything. And it's like, so not believable.
00:07:27
Speaker
It's, I think it's hilarious. Oh, absolutely. He is not good at disguising his intentions. Yeah, no, not at all.
00:07:40
Speaker
And then after winning the lottery in our next flashback, Hurley is speaking to the press outside of his house. When asked how he thought of the six numbers, he claims, the numbers sort of came to me.
00:07:52
Speaker
And during the press conference, Hurley reveals he is going to give some of the money to his hardworking grandpa Tito, who has worked three jobs for 52 years. But as Hurley continues to chat on with the press, the older man suffers a heart attack and dies signaling start of some bad luck or what, Nick?
00:08:12
Speaker
I mean, seriously, i thought he just had like fainted again. I thought he fainted um just like Hurley did. I didn't think he was going to die. it so yeah, it's affecting the people around him more than him, it seems.
00:08:26
Speaker
And so like and that's that was the first domino to fall, was Tito dying. and you know, we're going to get many more throughout this entire episode.
00:08:39
Speaker
Yeah. And it just gets wilder and wilder. Yeah.
00:08:45
Speaker
And then back on Island, back at the camp, Locke enlists the help of Claire with a project that he's working on. And she says, i probably won't be ah much help since I'm nine months pregnant. But Locke is like, no, you're perfect for the job. Can you, you know, use a saw? Can you hold stuff?
00:09:04
Speaker
And so this was a fun little subplot that ran throughout the episode this week. Just to get through it, we'll kind of cover it here in one place. Later in the episode, Claire is helping Locke build a mysterious object.
00:09:18
Speaker
The two discuss Claire's memory, and Locke says, maybe I can help. I'm good at putting bits and pieces together. Apparently, Claire's memory still hasn't come back from her capture. And he also asks if she already has a name for her unborn child.
00:09:33
Speaker
Claire says she hadn't really thought about it and reveals she was going to give the baby up for adoption. And then she also mentions that it's her birthday. Locke then... says, well, that should do it, and turns the completed object over, revealing that it's a cradle for when the baby is born and gives it to her as a birthday gift.
00:09:54
Speaker
I actually really, really, really liked this on this whole side plot. I'm not a big fan of some of them, because I think they take away from the story, and it's a lot of character building, which I don't hate at all, but sometimes I do get a little annoyed at, because I'm like, I just want to know what's going on.
00:10:10
Speaker
Yeah, because you're sitting there thinking, the hatch, what's going on at the hatch? Exactly. are you building a cradle lock? Tell me what's in the hatch. Yeah, exactly. But I did really like this whole bit, especially since so I think Claire and Locke are two characters that haven't really had like many interactions with each other.
00:10:28
Speaker
i think there's a lot of characters like that. and feel like there's some characters that just have like never talked to each other, like at all. And it's crazy. But it was great to see the Locke and Claire team up because we just haven't seen that before.
00:10:43
Speaker
Also, where is Rose? You're going to keep asking it when she doesn't show up. I'm going to ask. She's been in like three total episodes. Yeah. She's probably one of my favorites, too. I really do like her.
00:10:57
Speaker
Oh, yeah. She's great. Yeah, I thought it was kind of weird for Claire to share that the baby was held for adoption. thought it was kind of strange to share that. don't know if that's me thing.
00:11:09
Speaker
I don't know. Maybe I'm just overthinking it. She's probably just lonely and... Found a friend, someone that she felt like she could confide in. and Yeah, I guess. I guess, I guess, I guess.
00:11:22
Speaker
You know, everybody's different. People say stuff about themselves when they feel comfortable around other people, and some say more than others. This is true. But I definitely theory that I have right now.
00:11:34
Speaker
ah definitely think that Claire is going to name the baby John after John Locke. Oh, okay. That just makes sense to me. Well, we shouldn't be too far off from finding that out.
00:11:48
Speaker
Oh, yeah. But the baby will 100% be born soon. Yeah. You would think that it has to come in season one. but I've never watched the show, I'm thinking it has to come in season one based on the false labor few weeks ago. And that was before being kidnapped and going through all that experience. Right.
Jungle Expedition and Traps
00:12:08
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. And then back to the sequence of events happening on the island after we get through the subplot there. We flip back to the Hurley adventure.
00:12:19
Speaker
So we're in the caves and Hurley is packing his backpack with water bottles. And you alluded to this earlier. Charlie arrives saying hi and asking Hurley what he's doing. And Hurley is super jumpy and says, me? I'm not doing anything.
00:12:34
Speaker
And then Charlie keeps you know digging a little bit and Hurley claims he's going to find some new fishing areas and Charlie's like, I'll go with you. But Hurley's like, dude, I could really use some alone time. And then all of a sudden the four huge water bottles fall from Hurley's bag and Charlie's just kind of staring at him and Hurley's like,
00:12:53
Speaker
I'm a big guy. i get dehydrated easily. It's just so dumb. i't know how Charlie didn't figure that out. Charlie was all, no I'm not going to get into that here. I'm not going get into that yet.
00:13:03
Speaker
All right. I'm not going to get into that yet. Sounds good. And then meanwhile, Saeed finds out that someone stole one of Russo's maps or papers and he goes to confront Jack. And like you said earlier, Saeed was all kinds of fired up.
00:13:19
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Why'd you send Hurley to do your dirty work? And he soon realizes, based on Jack's responses, that Jack has no idea what he's talking about. And Charlie is coming through at that moment, and they ask Charlie if he saw Hurley. And Charlie's like, yeah. and And, you know, he acted like a complete loon, if I might add.
00:13:37
Speaker
And Jack and Charlie then prepare to leave. Saeed says goodbye to Shannon, who is worried about Saeed going. And when Saeed asks her if she's worried about him, Shannon asks, so what if I am? Saeed tells her, I'll be fine.
00:13:50
Speaker
So I know that you were loving the Saeed and Shannon scenes.
00:13:58
Speaker
Loving them. i mean, I just think it's a little silly. I think it's a little silly. I just don't think they work. I don't think they work at all. I think Saeed is way out of her league.
00:14:10
Speaker
I also think that she is going to end up playing, like, she's going to make a fool out of Saeed, and then he's going to be like, oh, I'm so sad. And also, he saw the picture of Nadia in this episode from Russo's camp. So, like... Right.
00:14:24
Speaker
You're doing all this stuff with Shannon, yet you're still madly in love with this girl who you think is dead, and who you actually were willing to shoot yourself in the leg for. So, you know, yada, yada, yada Yeah, i seriously, i just don't like that whole connection. that's the only bit of Saeed and Shannon we got this episode.
00:14:45
Speaker
So I'm actually kind of thankful for that. On another note, I did love the way that Saeed and Jack conversed about like who, you know, like how Jack taking it. He was like, you have no idea what I'm talking about, do you? He was like, nope.
00:14:59
Speaker
I thought it was really funny. Yeah, for sure. And then to transition us into our next flashback, I thought this was brilliant writing. Hurley is trekking down the beach with his hair in a do-rag and a rap song starts playing. Yeah.
00:15:15
Speaker
And then it smoothly transitions off island where the rap song is actually playing in his Hummer while he and his buddies are driving down the road. Or no, yeah not his buddies. ah He and his moms mom. His mom.
00:15:26
Speaker
Yeah. And so thought that was hilarious. But as as we get into the conversation in the car, we... We see that more bad luck is headed his way. He's taking his mom to see her new house, and he's talking to her about all the random things that have happened since he won the lottery. His brother Diego's wife Lisa left him for a waitress.
00:15:45
Speaker
And then at Tito's funeral, Father Aguilar was struck by lightning. So that's some bad luck to have your grandpa fall dead of a heart attack. Genuinely horrible. Yeah.
00:15:56
Speaker
And then his father, Aguilar, is struck by lightning at the funeral. Yeah. And, you know, he tells his mother that he thinks the money is cursed, but his mom ignores him, saying they are Catholic and they do not believe in curses.
00:16:07
Speaker
And then when they get to the new house, his mom, Carmen, breaks her ankle because Hurley got the bright idea to put a blindfold on her, have her step down, and then she twists her ankle on the curb, breaks it.
00:16:20
Speaker
And in the next moment, the police show up and arrest Hurley, believing him to be a drug dealer.
00:16:27
Speaker
Not to mention the house is on fire. Oh, yeah, house catches on fire. Yeah, forgot that part. Like three things in the span of like two seconds.
00:16:38
Speaker
Yeah, crazy. it's It's insane. when When his grandpa Tito died, it was kind of like, okay, I thought he just died. This is like ah cementing the fact that it is like a curse.
00:16:53
Speaker
He is cursed. Yeah. 100%. It kind of just locked it in. And I thought it was just bad thing after bad thing after bad thing after bad thing. i think one thing that this flashback, this set of flashbacks did for me was I feel like usually flashbacks are the answers.
00:17:10
Speaker
These left a lot more questions, which I did really enjoy. That's true. Yeah.
Financial Advisor and Cursed Numbers
00:17:20
Speaker
And then in a later flashback, he's in his financial advisor, Ken's office. Ken tells Hurley that every one of his stocks are up. His interest in orange futures skyrocketed after tropical storms hit Florida.
00:17:33
Speaker
He is now a majority shareholder of a box company in Tustin. And I want to pause there for a second, Nick. Did you catch that? ah box cox company in Tustin? Yes, I did. I caught that. That's John Locke.
00:17:44
Speaker
Yep. I did catch that. Another off-island tie between characters. And then he has a sneaker company in Canada that's doing well also. But Ken's also like, you know... It was destroyed in a fire where eight people died, but you were overinsured, so it's going to bring you ah windfall of cash.
00:18:01
Speaker
That's crazy. Hurley also getting financial settlements from his false arrest by the LAPD. But after hearing about more bad things happening associated with his lottery winnings, Hurley comes to the conclusion it is not the money that is cursed, but the numbers he used to win.
00:18:16
Speaker
And as Ken is assuring Hurley, there is no such thing as a curse. A man falls past the window behind them. So just kind of falling to the ground from somewhere on the top of the building.
00:18:28
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, you can't make it up. The John Locke thing is really cool. I i do really enjoy but enjoy that. But like especially since he they he's like, do you not believe in Locke? he's like, well, I'm accountant. I believe in the numbers.
00:18:39
Speaker
As soon as he said that, like literally instantaneous, dude is falling out the window. He's an unlucky dude. mean, he's got the the luck all comes to him, but he's an unlucky dude.
00:18:54
Speaker
Yeah, well, that's the interesting thing about it, too, is it's like he brings bad luck to all those around him, but he's sort of protected. Yeah.
00:19:05
Speaker
And then back on island, back at the camp, Michael and Jen have...
Raft Building Drama: Jin and Michael's Conflict
00:19:10
Speaker
have a little tiff over the raft building and Sawyer leaves in disgust because he's complaining about the noise.
00:19:16
Speaker
So we never really got much more than just the fact that Sawyer was really annoyed at the noise. Yeah. And then in the distance from Jen and Michael arguing, son and Kate are sitting together on the beach and son tells Kate that Jen won't ever speak to her again.
00:19:33
Speaker
Kate's like, nah, he just needs time. And son asks Kate if when the raft sails, if she thinks she, He will leave with them, and Kate doesn't really know what to say in response to that. I want to say, this set of scene felt really, really, really unnecessary.
00:19:51
Speaker
I don't know if that's just me being, like, annoying, but it felt really unnecessary. I mean, I guess Michael and Jen arguing, while, I mean, they are kind of, I feel like they are definitely closer, they don't hate each other as much anymore, but at the same time,
00:20:10
Speaker
You know what I'm saying? i do. i hear what you're saying. I think that the raft is just such a pivotal part of the story now that the writers were trying to...
00:20:21
Speaker
keep it in the storyline. Yeah. And obviously the, the sun and gin thing still being fresh off of last episode. Right. And you've probably noticed that before on other episodes. Like I forgot but i think it was maybe tabula rasa. Like they basically repeated things that happened at the end of the pilot verbally.
00:20:40
Speaker
right So I think that's also a ah ah tool that the writers use on the show so that if people miss things or if people are in and out of certain episodes or whatever, just so that they know what's going on, you know?
00:20:53
Speaker
Yeah, I agree. I don't think that Jin will leave Sun. think Kate is right. He needs time, but he still loves, I think he still loves Sun. And I think he's, you know, like, I don't i don't think he'll leave without her.
00:21:09
Speaker
I don't think he'll leave, period. I don't even think he would probably get on the raft. I think it's going to be Sawyer, Michael, Walt. I mean, maybe Jin, but I can't imagine him leaving without Sun. So, i don't know.
00:21:23
Speaker
Yeah, we will find out.
Meeting Rousseau and Curse Confirmation
00:21:26
Speaker
yeah And then Hurley finds the cable and yells, yo, French chick. And then follows the cable up until he steps on a pressure trigger to one of Russo's traps.
00:21:40
Speaker
Just as Saeed, Jack, and Charlie are catching up with him. And if Hurley moves, a large trap with sharp sticks will be released. They're all like, Hurley, just stay put.
00:21:52
Speaker
He's like, I'm telling you, I can make it. I'm spry. They're trying to talk him out of it, but he goes ahead and makes his decision and jumps, and the trap barely misses him. And Charlie literally yells at him and like, what is wrong with you, Hurley?
00:22:06
Speaker
And Hurley's like, nothing. And when they ask him what he's doing, he claims he is going after Rousseau so he can get a battery. And Saeed reluctantly suggests, well, if we're going to go after him, then I guess i will take the lead.
00:22:20
Speaker
One, i loved your French chick. Yeah, that was awesome. And then I loved his line, I'm spry as well. Yeah. And he knows he's going to be okay because he knows he's lucky.
00:22:31
Speaker
He knows it. Right. It's the same thing that happened on the bridge. Yeah. So that's why he's like, i'll I'm spry, I'll make it. Right? I also love Hurley's response. Nothing. Also, how did they catch up with him so fast?
00:22:46
Speaker
Didn't he have like a few hours head start? Yeah, you would think. Convenient plot writing, yeah. Right. And then, i don't know, i thought Saeed was a little annoying here.
00:22:59
Speaker
He was like, gosh, we're not going after Rousseau. This is stupid. We're not we're not doing this. No. And then like we're like, okay, we're going to go get the battery. He's like, okay, I guess I'll take the lead. I'll take the lead. No, no, no, no, no don't worry. i'll take the lead.
00:23:11
Speaker
I don't know. It felt kind of stupid to me. Sure. Yeah, I can see that. I mean, is almost out of character. But I definitely think Rousseau is going to become a character in like like, it's going to join the characters we know, and she will have a very close relation to Saeed.
00:23:31
Speaker
I definitely think that is going to happen. 100%. Prediction, if you will. Yeah, love it.
00:23:38
Speaker
And then in our next flashback... Nick, things start to get real. So buckle up here because Hurley visits the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute where he asks to see someone named Lenny or Leonard.
00:23:51
Speaker
And we find out in this scene that his name is Hugo and that he used to be a patient at Santa Rosa as well. Leonard keeps repeating the numbers over and over.
00:24:02
Speaker
And when Hurley tells him he used these numbers to win the lottery, Leonard all of a sudden just stops. I mean, he was sitting there like a lunatic, just going for eight, 15, 16, 23, 42, over and over again.
00:24:12
Speaker
And then Hurley tells him that. And he just stops and talks normally. And he's like, you use those to win the lottery. And then he starts screaming, you've opened the box and you have to get away from those numbers or it won't stop.
00:24:25
Speaker
And as the workers in the Institute grab Leonard and drag him out of the room, he tells Hurley that he heard the numbers from Sam Toomey, who heard them in some place in Australia that I can't pronounce the name.
00:24:35
Speaker
But what a scene, Nick, that just really added a whole other layer of mystery to these numbers. Yeah, 100%. And also answered some questions that you had, right? Because I remember a few episodes ago, you were like, well, his name's not even Hurley. We don't know his real name yet.
00:24:53
Speaker
Yeah, it's hurt Hugo. wonder ah why he goes by Hurley. Yeah. Maybe we'll find that out later. But I feel like we knew the ah Hugo thing, but I did not expect him to be um a patient.
00:25:15
Speaker
Right. That's the other thing here that was a huge twist. was not expecting that. And then I was also not expecting the numbers. Obviously, with with the whole story and the numbers, I was expecting the numbers to be, you know, i you originally the money being cursed or whatever, then the numbers.
00:25:34
Speaker
But I was not expecting someone else to know about it. and i was not expecting him to get those numbers from someone else and then find out where those numbers come from. Never in a million years did I think of that.
00:25:45
Speaker
Yeah. Very intriguing. Yes. And then back on Island, the search party reaches the rope bridge that you mentioned earlier.
00:25:55
Speaker
And it's just a, a bridge that has wood planks that are held up by rope. And it's going across this very long ravine. doesn't look very sturdy. It's definitely not in great condition, but Hurley is like, no, I'm going to try it. I'll be all right.
00:26:12
Speaker
And after he crosses the bridge successfully, Charlie gives it a try he what a great job Lost did in building up the suspense here as they were both going across. And then of course we get almost to the end of Charlie making it across and the bridge breaks apart.
00:26:27
Speaker
Charlie is able to kind of swing over the rest of the way. And then it separates them from Saeed and Jack who are on the other side. They tell Charlie and Hurley to stay put, but Hurley is determined to continue the search and,
00:26:40
Speaker
Charlie again shouts at him and is saying stuff like, would you shut up and stay put? Claiming Hurley is acting like a bloody lunatic. And Hurley looks on with an upset look on his face.
00:26:52
Speaker
Yeah, I have no idea how, how, I mean, I can't really explain the bridge scene except Hurley's look. And I think you're right. The suspense was fantastic. They make you think that either one of them is going to fall.
00:27:06
Speaker
yeah And they they they make it long, too, to just keep building and building and building and building and building and building and building. Exactly. Now is when I'll talk about Charlie a little bit.
00:27:18
Speaker
Okay. keys He's on my most hated list for this episode. That's totally fair. I thought he was a complete jerk this episode.
00:27:29
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Like, Satan thought he rude. Like, so rude. Now, like, i I kind of get his point where he's like, oh, you know, we're we're, like, searching for you and you don't seem to really care if Jack or Saeed just died or whatever. Mm-hmm. Which I don't think is true.
00:27:47
Speaker
I don't know I think i Charlie was just kind of, like... Really, like, really out of character this whole episode. Really rude. Almost talking, like, down to him like he's an idiot or something.
00:27:59
Speaker
Which is, which he's not. He's 100% not. He's, he's proved that he's, like, he's gotten this far. And sure, you can say it's been off of luck, but that luck's gotten him somewhere. So, you can't even really complain.
00:28:13
Speaker
So I thought Charlie was like, I thought he was a jerk before too, even when he was just like, oh, why you can you listen to Jack or something? Like, no he's not going to. He doesn't need to. He's fine. Right.
00:28:24
Speaker
And I'll talk a little bit more about it when we get a little further. But I think Charlie is my most hated this episode. Wow. That's a big, big shift there. Yeah. Although you haven't been a huge Charlie fan the last few episodes. This this is true.
00:28:41
Speaker
And then in our next flashback, we are in Australia prior Oceanic Flight 815 taking off and then crashing on the island. And Hurley is told by Sam Toomey's wife, Martha, that Leonard and Sam had heard the numbers about 16 years ago repeatedly through a looping radio broadcast while they were stationed at a listening post to monitor transmissions out of the Pacific.
00:29:07
Speaker
And just like Hurley, Sam used the numbers and was met with similar bad luck. As a result, Sam also came to believe that the numbers were cursed and eventually shot himself.
00:29:18
Speaker
And Martha confidently says she believes the numbers are not cursed and that you make your own luck and not to blame it on the numbers. I'm with Hurley here. Yeah. I think the numbers mean something for sure.
00:29:31
Speaker
Oh, absolutely. So question for you. Yep. Given that they heard the numbers about 16 years ago, around the same time... I do think it was Rousseau. Okay.
00:29:43
Speaker
I do think it was Rousseau. Yeah. That's exactly what i was going to ask. Did they hear her May Day recording? I think... Rousseau reached with Sam, and um Sam reached Leonard, and Leonard reached Hurley.
00:29:59
Speaker
And now the connection of Rousseau and Hurley is true. So, I mean, i think it's crazy. I think it's a crazy parallel. I think the show is... does an amazing job with that.
00:30:10
Speaker
Yeah. And it's such a great connection. And it's such a great episode, too. haven't talked about how much I really did enjoy this episode yet. I loved it. I loved everything about it. I think it was very plot central, too. Mm-hmm.
00:30:23
Speaker
And i kind of explained, it gave a little bit more as to why the island is what the island is Right. While also, i mean, giving us a Harley backstory, which I will definitely not complain about in a million years.
00:30:36
Speaker
So, I mean, I loved it. I thought it was great. It was great. And so, given what we know then, that Rousseau recorded the May Day call, they heard it while monitoring out of the Pacific Ocean. Rousseau sort of started this whole loop of of trouble with the numbers.
00:30:55
Speaker
Yep. You know, obviously that doesn't doesn't solve what the numbers are why she used them in the first place or why they seem to be so unlucky or, know, there's a lot of weird stuff surrounding the numbers, but just kind of interesting. here And then back on Island in the jungle, Jack and Saeed find Russo's camp. She's not there.
00:31:17
Speaker
Jack accidentally hits a trip wire and the whole camp explodes. And Saeed comes to the conclusion that she did this because she knew that one day I would come back and probably bring others with me.
00:31:28
Speaker
And so she abandoned the camp and booby trapped to harm him. um I do have to say, I think that was extremely smart from Russo. I think Russo is an extremely smart character.
00:31:41
Speaker
She is. She's really smart. She might be a little loopy and insane, but she's extremely sm smart and she's extremely good at what she does. Oh, yeah. I thought for a minute, like I knew that Jack and Saeed weren't dead because I saw the explosion obviously in front of them, but also destroying any evidence in her house was a fantastic idea.
00:32:04
Speaker
Yeah, for sure. And then I just want to go back to, I think Saeed and Rousseau will definitely have some sort of connection at some point in the show.
00:32:16
Speaker
i'm guessing Shannon will probably get jealous. Hmm, interesting.
00:32:23
Speaker
Well, if Danielle massages Saeed's face the way she did awkwardly at the end of that one episode, that would definitely happen. Yeah.
00:32:35
Speaker
And then back to the Charlie and Hurley thread, who are still separated from Jack and Saeed. This is the part of the on-island part of the episode where we kind of buckle up because a lot happens and it happens pretty quickly here. So Charlie demands that Hurley tells him why they are looking for the French woman. And he's like, I know this has nothing to do with the batteries.
00:32:56
Speaker
And when Hurley is about to reveal his secret, they hear gunshots and start running. And Hurley ends up coming face to face with Rousseau, who's holding a gun at him. And he tells her, hey, I was from the same plane as Saeed, that guy you tortured.
00:33:11
Speaker
He shows her a piece of paper with the numbers and he asks her what they are. And she says, I don't know. And Hurley gets really angry here and says, that thing in the woods, maybe it's a monster, maybe it's a pissed off giraffe.
00:33:24
Speaker
I don't know, but the fact that no one is even looking for us, yeah, that's weird. But I just go along with it because I'm along for the ride. Good old fun time Hurley. But now guess what? I want some freaking answers.
00:33:36
Speaker
I want to say... I think Charlie demands Hurley to tell him why they're looking for a French woman. Shut up, Charlie. he was like, I think I have a right to know. they Just be quiet. Just shut up. that You don't understand.
00:33:50
Speaker
Like, in in saying you have right to know when you clearly obviously don't is stupid. And then they hear gunshots, but it's not even if they hear gunshots. It's that Rousseau shoots at Charlie and Hurley and misses, right? Because Hurley's lucky.
00:34:05
Speaker
Right. And if you ever like, were were like, oh, wait, she just missed. She saw it. She shot a second time the exact same spot and missed again because Hurley is lucky. Yeah.
00:34:18
Speaker
Right. So that that's like just really, I mean, again, just showcasing off how lucky Hurley is. And I love that we get to see like oh like a serious Hurley.
00:34:30
Speaker
I mean, um obviously we get a pissed off giraffe line, which is kind of like a tension. But i I do like the um the line, the ah but I just go along with it because I'm along for the ride.
00:34:40
Speaker
but old fun time Hurley. So it's like he he knows that he's kind of like a, I don't know what the word is off the top my head. Comic relief, I think it's what you said earlier.
00:34:53
Speaker
Yeah, like she he kind of knows that he's like comic reliever. He's not a quote, quote, serious character. But now he's becoming one and he is, you know, very, very, very passionate about it. So I just really, really, really like that.
00:35:16
Speaker
And then as Hurley gets a little upset with Rousseau, she softens and tells him her story, how she and the rest of her science expedition picked up a transmission with a voice repeating those numbers.
00:35:28
Speaker
After several weeks, they found a radio tower up by the Black Rock. So we've heard about that in Claire's dream before, or in her diary from her dream. Yep. I'm very curious as to what the Black Rock is. I hope we find out by the end of the season.
00:35:42
Speaker
Yeah. Me too. And while they tried to figure out the meaning of the numbers, all of the members of her her expedition became sick, so she returned to the radio tower and changed the numbers transmission to the distress signal.
00:35:58
Speaker
And Rousseau admits through her conversation with Hurley that the numbers were what brought her to the island, as it appears that they brought Hurley. And she says since the first time she heard them, only bad things happened to the people that she cared about.
00:36:11
Speaker
So she agrees with Hurley's assertion that the numbers may indeed be cursed. And Hurley, who has waited so long, this whole episode was about Hurley needing some validation that he wasn't crazy, right? And Charlie kept telling him over and over again that he's acting crazy.
00:36:27
Speaker
He's crazy. Why are you being crazy? And he finally gets that validation and just wraps Rousseau up into a huge bear hug and is like, thank you so much. And then...
00:36:38
Speaker
He catches up with Jack, Saeed, and Charlie, confidently hands them a battery, and then also delivers a message from Rousseau to Saeed. She says, hey. And as Hurley walks off, Jack just grins at the others. it was such a cool scene.
00:36:52
Speaker
It was such a good moment. And I like that Rousseau softens in this scene and kind of like lets Hurley like just be Hurley. It shows that she's, I don't think that she is one of, I think there's the others, but I don't think she is one of the others.
00:37:09
Speaker
No, I don't think so. ah So i i revoke my theory about Ethan being Alex. Oh, okay. I revoke that theory. Well, that theory could still have some legs, couldn't it? and You're right, right, you're right. you're right good He got kidnapped when he was ah baby. Yeah, that's that's true, that's true, that's true. I'm actually going table it. I'm not going to revoke it. I lied.
00:37:32
Speaker
That's fair. But I think that you have the others, you have Rousseau, and then you have the people on the plane crash. So I think Russo isn't bad, but i don't think she's necessarily good either.
00:37:45
Speaker
But I really did like her this episode, and I thought she was great. Giving them the battery, ah sympathizing with Hurley, and just, you know, like, really, just like you said, Hurley, who has just been waiting his entire, you know, i don't want to say life, but entire long time.
00:38:01
Speaker
Yeah, since since he won the lottery. boy Yeah, since he won the lottery, for someone to say, like, you know, like... You're not crazy. He's been waiting for that for so long.
00:38:12
Speaker
and he finally hears it. It's got to feel so good to Hurley. And i'm I'm so glad he got that. Yeah, for sure. That was a great moment.
Charlie's Confrontation and Hurley's Confession
00:38:22
Speaker
And then back at the camp later that night, Charlie approaches Hurley, who is hanging out by the fire. And he says, back in the jungle, you were going to tell me what inspired this little quest. And Hurley confesses to Charlie that he thinks the plane crashed because of him.
00:38:37
Speaker
He tells him that bad things happen to people around him, but Charlie interrupts him and says, you know what, man, back on the plane before it broke off in midair, i was snorting heroin in the toilet and I couldn't even go a whole flight without taking drugs.
00:38:50
Speaker
I suppose that was your fault as well. Charlie then looks at Hurley and asks him to reciprocate since he told him the biggest secret of his life. Hurley finally tells him that back home, I'm worth $156 million. dollars And Charlie, of course, believes that Hurley is lying and he leaves Hurley saying, I bare my soul and all I get is bloody jokes.
00:39:12
Speaker
This is, I think, what put Charlie so low on the list for me. I could deal with the other things. I think this was sort of the the the tipping point.
00:39:25
Speaker
So what was it about that conversation specifically? Because let's be real, like most people, if you were told that you're you're worth $156 million. Yeah.
00:39:37
Speaker
yeah That's hard for people to believe. Right. Right. Now I get it that like, okay, Hurley's a bigger guy. He's not the cleanest cut looking guy.
00:39:47
Speaker
yeah So maybe, you know, Charlie was profiling him a little bit and not believing it. So maybe that's where the frustration comes from for you. Actually, I'm going to go a step further. Charlie interrupts him.
00:40:01
Speaker
Yeah. And he kind of talks about himself. Right. He makes it about himself, talking about the drugs, and it's great that you got over that, and I loved them all, and I thought that was such a fantastic episode.
00:40:15
Speaker
Yeah, it was. And then like, like saying like, oh, I'm supposed that was your fault as well. Kind of mocking his thought process of like, it might have been my fault. But also if he does like believe that it is Hurley's fault, then he believes that it is Hurley's fault that he's like had all this drug addiction.
00:40:33
Speaker
Right. And then even if that wasn't bad enough, and then he tells him to reciprocate since he told him the biggest secret of his life. That's just so bad. Like, that's so bad.
00:40:44
Speaker
You don't make someone tell you to reciprocate because you just told them a big secret. That's not how that works. Yeah. You can't just expect someone to reciprocate because you told someone a secret. That's not how that works. Mm-hmm.
00:40:56
Speaker
And then Hurley did Right. He did tell him the secret of the $156 million dollars and he didn't even believe him and he thought it was a joke. I don't know. I kind of get why he thinks it's a joke. But at the same time, after everything they've been through in this one day, i would think that Charlie would have the decency to believe Hurley and the decency to, you know, be a little bit better after all the crap he's pulled.
00:41:19
Speaker
Sure. that makes sense. I do think that Charlie, in his own way, was trying to make Hurley feel better about himself by saying it's not your fault that we crashed, right? Yes.
00:41:32
Speaker
The way he did it was off-putting, and I totally get that he was annoying in this episode and acted a little bit egregiously towards Hurley at times. Yeah. Mm-hmm.
The Hatch Mystery Deepens
00:41:44
Speaker
And then as we close the episode out, somebody hold my drink. The camera pans to another part of the island. The hatch that Boone and Locke discovered is shown in the jungle. And on the side of the hatch, the numbers are embossed on it in very tiny lettering.
00:42:00
Speaker
And then we fade to black with Lost hitting our screens. And Nick, I know you were excited about this for a long time. So what an episode, in my opinion, that really blew my mind in relation to the numbers and and what they are.
00:42:13
Speaker
And what an ending for that to be on the hatch. Wow. That's kind of all I have to say as well. What does it mean? What does it mean? What does it mean? ah There's so many questions. There's so many everythings. Oh my goodness.
00:42:32
Speaker
Well, let's go back to the beginning of the episode as we talk through this, right? yeah Yeah. Saeed said that he thinks they might be coordinates. Yeah. Rousseau has also mentioned multiple times that they were playing when they got brought to the island.
00:42:49
Speaker
Yeah. So maybe they are coordinates of some kind, a location of where the island is. I'm thinking they're coordinates of the Black Rock. Off to my head.
00:43:00
Speaker
I'm going kind of skip to theories really fast. Okay. Because I really only have like three. Yeah. One, I think that the sickness that occurred to all of Rousseau's people just occurred because Rousseau used the numbers.
00:43:18
Speaker
and Similar to how everyone around Hurley either died or was severely injured because he used the numbers. And I think everyone got sick because of the numbers. And it makes Rousseau seem a little bit more reasonable now, knowing that she used those numbers. That's theory number one.
00:43:35
Speaker
Interesting. Theory number two is that they are coordinates, but they are coordinates to the Black Rock. Okay. Theory number three is that, and this one kind of contradicts my first one, or second one, about the coordinates.
00:43:50
Speaker
I think that the hatch is Rousseau's ship that washed up on the island.
00:43:59
Speaker
Okay. I don't know if that's crazy to say. and That's just a thought or an idea is that, you know, it could be, could be the actual ship that Russo came on.
00:44:12
Speaker
And that's why it's got the hatch. And that's why it's got the numbers. Okay. I hope we find out. I'm i'm assuming we've gotten a little bit more hatch action. So I'm assuming we find out pretty soon. I hope so. Those are my theories.
00:44:24
Speaker
If I had to rate this episode, I'm giving it like a 9.1 out of 10.
00:44:29
Speaker
I love that. I think that's... It's up there. think that's pretty accurate, yeah. I think I would a little higher, because I just love this episode. I think I would give it 9.3, maybe.
00:44:42
Speaker
I think this is a top five episode for me. Agreed. Because I am going to come up with a list of like all my ah like the episodes like completely ranked in order.
00:44:54
Speaker
Yes. I think it's going to be hard to place a lot of them. Right. But I definitely think this is the top five. I think my top five will surprise you. Because have some in mind.
00:45:08
Speaker
If special is in your top five, that will surprise me. ah It's going to be. We got a lot of season one left to go, so I wouldn't hold to that. yeah Okay.
00:45:18
Speaker
Because the next string of episodes is just going to keep punching you straight in the gut. Yeah. I can't wait. Awesome. Yeah, it's it's such a good episode. And I think IMDB ranked this one at 9.0, which is... Oh, wow.
00:45:32
Speaker
Very good for IMDB. Yeah. Yeah, it's one of the highest ranked episodes for season one on there, I think. All
00:45:42
Speaker
right, awesome. Yeah, what a great episode. It's time for our Most Loved, Most Hated segment. So this is the segment of our show where we talk about who's trending up and who are we loving at the current...
00:45:53
Speaker
time or episode and then who are we hating or who's trending down for us currently so Nick don't start with your most hated today since you gave us a little peek into that earlier uh Charlie is my most hated all right I gave my reasoning throughout this episode as to why he was uh he's fallen down a little bit on my list I think he's just not been as great as he could have been Yeah.
00:46:22
Speaker
A little disappointed in it. But yeah, I think he is my least favorite for this one. Second least favorite, I think I'm going to just have to go Shannon. I knew it.
00:46:34
Speaker
I do not like her.
00:46:38
Speaker
i think she's very, very annoying, and I don't like her with Saeed. So I think she is my second bottom, and then my third bottom, or my least hated out of the three.
00:46:50
Speaker
I guess I'll go boom. I don't really have anybody. Yeah. and play He wasn't even... Was he even in this episode? Nope. We didn't even see him in this episode. But I feel like he's just on such a bad streak.
00:47:04
Speaker
Yeah, and who else from this episode? This was one of those weird episodes where usually the off-island characters are the antagonists or they're some of the villains, you know?
00:47:14
Speaker
Right. but But no one off-island in this episode really fit that... Category, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. My most loved, I think for this episode, I have to put Hurley 1.
00:47:28
Speaker
Yeah. ah Compared to my usual lock one. So, yeah, I think I'm going to go Hurley one, lock two. And this one becomes difficult because I want to put Jack or Saeed, I think, but it's really hard picking which one. I'm going to go Jack i just because Saeed kind of annoyed me sometimes this episode.
00:47:49
Speaker
So I'm going to go Jack as my three.
00:47:52
Speaker
Okay, yeah. Believe it or not, I am actually in line with both of those. That's exactly who I would have in my most hated. Charlie wasn't having this episode. And I know that i'm I'm a big fan of Charlie, but he does yeah have a he does have a character arc that kind of jumps all over the place in the show.
00:48:11
Speaker
Yeah. and that's that's what makes him very interesting. um And then on your most loved, I agree that Jack would slot in there with Locke and Hurley this week. You know, this is one of those weeks where Jack was even keel, easy to get along with Jack, also going to rescue and try to look after the people from the camp, you know, leader Jack. So we didn't get any dark Jack in this episode.
00:48:36
Speaker
so i anytime that we don't get dark Jack, Jack is one of my favorite characters. I agree.
00:48:45
Speaker
Awesome. Well, we talked about our theories and predictions already. And so that's that's all for today's episode. Next time, we will be discussing episode 19, which is titled, i don't even know if I can pronounce this correctly. I think it's Deuce Ex Machina.
00:49:01
Speaker
Machina. Machina, okay. Deuce Ex Machina. So i'm getting I'm getting schooled every day I'm learning. Yes. So who you but do you think this one's going to center around?
00:49:15
Speaker
Well, a quick search and the meaning of this saying is an unexpected power or event saving a seemingly hopeless situation.
00:49:28
Speaker
I honestly have never even looked up the meaning of that word. that Which makes me think
00:49:36
Speaker
that is a Locke-centric episode, and I'm really hoping it is. what What makes you think it's a Locke-centric episode? Because Locke is basically the freaking king, man.
00:49:47
Speaker
It's King John Locke, man. Are you kidding? And secondly, why are you so good at guessing this? Because yes, that is correct. Oh, i'm this is a crazy lineup. Hurley into John Locke. That's like my favorite thing ever.
00:50:01
Speaker
Oh, that's amazing. I can't wait for this one. Especially since I think Walkabout has been of my favorite episode so far. I can't wait. Oh, I'm telling you, Nick, when I look back on all of the flashback episodes of Lost, Locke's flashback episodes are consistently at the top of my list. like They are just always so good. there's like on that There's one I didn't love as much. It was a little weird, but most of them are like, talking like nine and a half out of ten rankings. They're just so good.
00:50:39
Speaker
I wish I could go back and watch Walkabout for the first time. Oh my yeah goodness. It was so great. I was so excited. You could go back and watch it for the second time before you watch this episode. This is true. This is true. But I hear you. I was so excited. Watching something for the first time is just nothing like it.
00:50:58
Speaker
As soon as he threw that knife... um at the freaking cushion seat. ro I actually, I got so giddy. I loved that whole episode and how he sees the beast and like, but it doesn't kill him. It's oh, he knows something and he's like, oh, he's so cool.
00:51:20
Speaker
So I'm very, very, very excited. Oh, I can't wait to watch that. Well, and with John Locke at this juncture, we can probably assume we're going to get some more hatch action next week. Yeah, and then sadly also some boon action. the boon action, yeah, that's true.
00:51:40
Speaker
Well, yeah, it's going to be a great one. Be sure to watch it and join us for the discussion. And don't forget to subscribe, follow, or leave a review. And we look forward to seeing you next time. Yes, we do. Woo-hoo!
