Go Get Your Ghoul: The Thing

Transcript

Speaker: You had a birthday, though. I did. i had a birthday. i got my nails done. i know. You said you were going to text them to me, and you didn't. Oh, I didn't? I'm so sorry. my God.

Speaker: I suck. I suck. I think that I got you yeah i got super distracted because um

Speaker: i took a bunch of pictures, and then Charlie was like, why do you have pictures of them in three different locations? And I was like, because the light's different. Come on, Charlie. And then I got self-conscious about it. ah I know.

Speaker: i know. But the problem is, is that like, they're my first professional fake nails. Um, first perfect. Really? You've never had acrylics before? I've never had acrylics before. wow Yeah. Um, it's always been au naturel or press ons and, um, they're great.

Speaker: I might need them to be a little bit shorter next time, at least on my left hand, because I'm learning to play the guitar. And so it's like, play the guitar. Yeah. Yeah. Oh my God. Did I not tell? Oh my God, Katie, I am a terrible friend.

Speaker: It's been my whole life. We've only talked about horror movies for the last i know, we have. We've only talked about horror movies. um But so a few, like a month ago, we went up to New Hampshire.

Speaker: Yeah, to visit um future and past guests, Madison Smith and her fiance, ah Nick, last name who shall not be named, even though... Never guess Nick. Never guess Nick.

Speaker: But um anyways, I went up to New Hampshire um and then we went to this ah thrift store and it was the cutest little... thrift store full of just so much stuff. And I saw a guitar in a case and I just went over and I was like looking at it. And then this old hippie guy comes over and he goes, you're looking at that guitar.

Speaker: And i was like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I am looking at this guitar. and he goes, and then he picks it up and he starts playing it. And he's like, oh, this actually is a pretty guitar. It's good for learning. And he goes. He did or didn't work there? He did not work there. He was just a patron. Just a random man. Just a random hippie man. And then he starts um talking to me about um how music is,

Speaker: the language of life and how he went and studied with a shaman and um they talked about the different chakras and he educated me on chakras and I was like I mean I already know but um it's fine I should save mansplain um and it was really hard to see if he was hitting on me or if he genuinely just wanted to tell me about his love of music He could just be like that. There's a certain yeah flavor of of hippie that is just like that. It's just like that.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. They just want to share their like life experience and stuff. And so I don't know if it's less annoying than being hit on. it might be. Yeah. It's probably about the same. Yeah. It's about the same. And like.

Speaker: Nick and Charlie were over in the corner looking at vinyls and Nick was like I was so ready to jump in for you Emma and I was just like it's fine he was just he just wanted to talk to someone about this guitar and so he was just like and so as he's like playing the guitar and then he goes and yeah so know learn, learn music, love music. And then he puts it down and then I'm just like, well, I guess I have to buy this guitar now. Otherwise I'm cursed. ah

Speaker: It's like the, like the, the old man in the beginning of a slasher movie. Exactly. Tries to warn the kids. Yeah. Right, exactly. Or like the the old crone in Beauty and the Beast. It's like if I don't listen to this old man about learning the guitar, I will be cursed for the rest of my life. And it was met an auger of death. I did. You're learning to play the guitar. Now I'm learning to play the guitar. And so I bought this guitar and it's this great little guitar. It was only $65. Okay, yeah.

Speaker: okay yeah What kind guitar is it? ah It's a guitar. Okay. Guitar brand. Yeah. It's a guitar brand guitar. And it came with a case. Sure. yeah And in the case was like a little like chord dictionary, which I was just like, oh, okay. um But now I have like all the guitar apps and like, I'm learning to play the guitar and I haven't completed whole song yet. I'm still working on making the shapes. going from chord to chord seamlessly. It's going to be hard with nails. Yeah, you're right about the nails. Yeah, it's real hard. Yeah. I don't understand how Dolly Parton ever played the guitar at all. Well, there's a Dolly method. Because I googled, I just like, how to play guitar with fake nails. It's all power chords, Yeah, exactly. It's all power chords. It's all bar chords.

Speaker: So yeah, so I'm going to have her, when I go back in go a little bit shorter so that I can get back to my um guitar playing. Charlie is not a fan of this new hobby. He likes it when I have silent hobbies. Jesus, Charlie. i mean no

Speaker: One of the most controversial things Charlie's ever said in this podcast. Right. He likes when I have silent hobbies. He likes when his wife is silent. That's what you're saying again. wife is silent. um Jesus. Right. Charlie hates women. No, that's a lie. That's slander. Allegedly. I didn't say that.

Speaker: No, every time I pick it up, I'll like start to like, just like pick around on the guitar. and And he'll go, Emma, no.

Speaker: And I'm like, how am I supposed to learn? Come on Exactly. i know the beginnings of zombie. You know what's a lot less expensive than magic cards, Charlie? A guitar. a guitar.

Speaker: a guitar. And like, I mean, I'm now at the point in a lot of these apps where like I have to like subscribe to keep learning. And so I have to pick one. Well, you can find free YouTube videos of people teaching you how to play the guitar unlimited hours.

Speaker: That's true You don't need to. You don't need to pay for that. That's true. That's very true. If you're going to pay for guitar lessons, I would pay someone in person, not an app. Yeah, that's very true. um But yeah, so I'm learning to play the guitar. Hell yeah. Did you say were learning zombie? I'm learning zombie. So I've learned um the chords and the strumming pattern for zombie and stick season and all too well, but all too well has F chord in there. don't know what stick But zombie zombie is ah is, yeah, that's very easy chord. It's very easy. It's very, very easy. um

Speaker: The problem is going, is like making it seamless, which comes with practice. Well, you just, I mean, you have to create calluses on your fingers and it's just going to take time I just have to keep playing that's the thing is that's going to keep me going is that if I stop playing the guitar I'm going to be cursed ah may that's probably a good way I mean if you want to think about it that way that's probably a good way to get yourself to learn yeah this man knew what he was talking about it's the end of the world ends of the world speaking of the end of the world right right famously featured in today's film

Speaker: Now, of course, that is going to make it difficult for me to cut that out, all this stuff out, so we don't have 12 minutes of guitar talk before the episode starts. So sorry. There will be 12 minutes of guitar talk, and that's going to launch Emma and Katie's ah second spinoff podcast, Guitar Talk.

Speaker: pick it in a griin Picking a and a grinning. With Emma and With Emma and Katie as they talk about ah guitars. um That's right, guys. This is Go Get Your Goo.

Speaker: That's thunder. Yeah, thanks. Our last episode of 2026 for Be Your Ghoul. Yep. And ah you guessed it. This is the podcast where Emma and Katie just want to study Snow.

Speaker: kis no are two Antarctic temperatures. Yeah. Like doing experiments in low temperature. like Yeah. I don't know. Whatever they do in Antarctica. Whatever they do. There's labs in Antarctica all the time. i don't know what they do, but they just- Doing stuff. Learning about fish and snow. And ah yeah, I guess. Uh, all of a sudden this crazy man in a helicopter is just shooting out the window at this poor innocent dog. And they're like, what is happening here? this is man is insane. Turns out he's Norwegian, Swedish, Norwegian, Norwegian.

Speaker: I was right. The first time shouldn't have second guessed it. Uh, and, um, and he's just, as they say in Norway, loco.

Speaker: And all of a sudden we realize, um well, our group goes on a little expedition to like see what happened to their camp. turns out detailed Turns out it was not great. And everyone's real cool about this weird looking organism that nobody questions. Well, I mean, they question it, but not in a way that you would think. They're like kind of chill about it. and scientists you know yeah i guess i guess that makes sense until it's a thing there's a thing about is for the important yeah it's a it's a thing the thing it's not a dog no it's not a dog and it which if you speak real or fucking cool oh i hate to do a fun fact right and but that's okay katie's fun fact katie's fun fact

Speaker: If you speak Norwegian, the movie gets spoiled for you a little bit because what the shouting at him is like, that's not a dog. That's a thing. Don't get near it. You have to kill it. It's not a dog. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Because at the beginning, anyways...

Speaker: blah, blah, blah, blah. The thing starts looking real cool and also real gross at the same time. And turns out it's like a body snatcher type situation where it just like, you know, Xeroxes your body and um eats you and then absorbs you then turns into you.

Speaker: Correct. Yes. And so then it becomes this whole, you know, psychological situation of um who do you trust?

Speaker: Who's telling the truth and who's lying and who's an asshole? All while being super turned on by the sexy, sexy, sexiness that is nineteen eighty s kurt russell be i big time big time uh that's right guys uh i'm emma and i'm katie and today we are talking about 1982 sci-fi horror masterpiece the thing the thing directed by your boy john carpenter yeah by bill lancaster who i forgot to look up bill lancaster

Speaker: um This isn't our first John Carpenter, right? um This is our first John Carpenter, I believe, yeah. He didn't do Nightmare on Elm? No, that was Wes Craven. That's Wes Craven. Oh my God.

Speaker: bill Bill Lancaster wrote the Bad News Bears. Oh, and then he was like, I'm gonna write the sequel, The Thing. And then he wrote that he, he, yeah, he's got character credits on Bad News Bears sequels. It looks like he wrote the Bad News Bears go to Japan as well. And then The Thing and that is it.

Speaker: End of list. So we had two stories in him. One about a bunch of lovable scamps. Yeah. Playing baseball for an alcoholic. and And the Bad News Bears. And the Bad News Bears, right, yeah. um So, yeah, weird. um This is based on a classic short story called Who Goes There by John W. w Campbell Jr., who was a titan of sci-fi like writing in the mid-century. There's a very famous science fiction book award for named after him. It's the John W. Campbell Award. Oh.

Speaker: called a campbell previously this movie was made into a howard hawks horror movie from the 50s called the thing from another world very um very famous movie very like there's a creature on the other side of this door that we're not going open oh i love that all you know it's paranoia right yeah it's like 1950s horror which like you see the creature at the end and it looks like you know in nineteen fifty s do you think that like the whole like communist scare situation of like the 50s is why paranoid horror was such a thing in the 50s? Oh, it absolutely was. I mean, and this and this story is very specifically about that. Yeah. What? Look at us. We just did some film analysis. Occasionally we'll do some film analysis on the right hundred episodes. Yeah. Every now and again, they'll go ding, ding, ding, ding.

Speaker: um This movie was not a hit and was reviled by critics at the time because it was ah too dark, too gross, too scary. Pretty much. This was the same year that E.T. came out. And so people were kind of like high on cute alien and like yeah disgusting, like bleak, apocalyptic alien was not really. That was not the vibe.

Speaker: That was not the vibe. Not long after, just a few years later, it became kind of a cult hit and is now widely considered one of the best horror movies of all time.

Speaker: I was going to say, it's it's fucking great. It's really fucking great. It's a masterpiece. Yeah, it is. Probably John Carpenter's favorite best movie. yeah It's his favorite. It's my favorite Carpenter movie. I mean, this is the first of Emma's fun facts, Emma's fun facts. He says that this is his favorite movie that he ever made. yeah And he took it really, really hard when it was a box office flop.

Speaker: It was also his big break. Like he made Halloween, which was an indie low budget, made a ton of money, turned down doing the sequel to do different stuff, but got that paper, baby. Yeah, many, many Carpenter famously was like, yeah, they can make Halloween sequels as long as they want, as long as I get paid. Yeah, I mean, which is fair.

Speaker: He made The Fog, which is another low-budget horror movie with Jamie Lee Curtis. And after and then like they're like, hey, do you want $15 million dollars to make a big-budget horror movie? And you can you know do whatever you want. And he's like, ah yes, please. And so he made this. This was his his first big studio movie, and He didn't get another chance like this. Like this was, you know, I suppose I can't think of anything else. I mean, I'm not a hundred percent sure about this, but I can't think of another budget this size that Carpenter ever got again, at least in terms of um

Speaker: ah inflation, you know, $15 million dollars in 1981 when he made this movie was, that's a big studio budget. of money yeah Especially for a horror movie. $200,000 of that was was set aside for creature effects, which was the most ever at the time.

Speaker: Yeah. And instead of going with, you know, Stan Winston and or one of the the classic um Jim Hansen. Yeah, Jim Henson.

Speaker: Jim Henson. Yeah, Jim Henson. Oh, do you think I said Jim Hansen? Well, you called him that at an old episode. I thought you were doing a callback. No, Jim Hansen. um they decided to go with Rob Botten, a 22 year old who had never made a movie before. And he is a genius. Yeah. And he did things that nobody else would have thought of. He did things that were partially because he was not super versed in the industry, like because of, of not knowing how to do some, some things he invented new ways of doing things. I've watched a couple of documentaries about this movie in the past. I,

Speaker: did not watch them for this episode. so That's okay. I mean, I think it's sort of like, it helps. It's not a research podcast. It's not a research podcast. And I think that the fact that you didn't prepare and you can just call upon the knowledge if it comes to you from years ago.

Speaker: Yeah, but there's there's actually a new six-hour documentary about the thing that just came out that you have to pay you have to pay to see, which I didn't do that. But i I'm going to watch it eventually. Yeah, it'll it'll be free and streaming some point. Yeah, yeah.

Speaker: But there's a lot of information out there about this movie. And I've definitely watched interviews with Rob Botten before talking about it. But I am i don't remember like specifics to call out in this. in so Yeah.

Speaker: That's okay. No worries. It'll come out. um The movie is shot by Dean Cundey, a very famous cinematographer who did Halloween and this and then went on to do Back to the Future and Jurassic Park. and a bunch of other very famous huge movies he's one of the like big cinematographers of the of the era for sure nice and the the score which was john carpenter almost always does his own scores for his movies but for this he hired ennio morricone one of the most famous composers of all time yep and weirdly morricone turned in a very john carpenter inspired score and then he's like i should have done this myself

Speaker: car Exactly. Carpenter was like, well, I should have. So instead he used, you know, pieces of it. Yeah. And um and then did a lot of the score himself. So it's uncredited John Carpenter score in this as well. But it's very moody. It's very like bum bum.

Speaker: bomb bum bum bum you know it's and it's like the thing about john carpenter that he probably didn't realize at the time is that like the fact that he does his own scoring in most of his movies and his movie if he has his name attached to it down the line now we know it has to look and sound like a john carpenter film like yeah you you want it to look and sound like a john carpenter film so it's actually for the best that that worked out because branding baby Yeah, and it's, you know, he, the the movie is, the the score was not made to the movie. The score was just a bunch of tracks that were sent to him. So he was able to to to edit the score into the into the film, which is kind of usually the opposite way um scores are put together. Well, there you go.

Speaker: Look at, you've got so many facts about this movie. Yeah. Yeah, it's just like it's important. um Yeah, so I yeah feel like there's like 10,000 more facts about this movie than there was about the 1999 remake of The Haunting.

Speaker: Well, yeah. I don't think I looked up the cinematographer of the 1999 version. I don't think you did either. Oh, are you looking at the cinematographer now? I'm pretty sure. i I think you like mentioned it was like.

Speaker: Carl Walter Lindelau. Although Caleb Deschanel originally handled cinematography before being fired. Oh, I told you that movie's cursed. Caleb, I mean, Caleb Deschanel, famous cinematographer, father of Zoe and Emily. Yeah, yeah. That movie was cursed. People kept getting fired or leaving and not doing it. And they said that it was a spooky set, even though it was all set.

Speaker: There was no mostly spooky. How bad it was. Yeah. OK, ok Too spooky. um ah Yes. So, um yeah, it's Antarctica.

Speaker: Yep. And we we start on this this lab. There's a bunch of boys. This movie has no the boys. The boys. There's about 12 characters in this movie. hmm.

Speaker: There's a couple of Norwegian guys who get killed at beginning. That's pretty much it. it's Oh, there's more than one? I thought it was just one. is it is it just one? yeah It's just the guy in a helicopter. yeah, it's just one guy.

Speaker: And he's just like, and he's saying, Norway, Norway, Norway. and Yeah. And then they go, Flirty, birdie, girdy, furtie. Flirty, burger, burger. And then they're like, stop.

Speaker: We also support PETA.

Speaker: There are two Norwegians. Oh, there are. Okay. Well, maybe it's just, I'm just being Norwegian racist. Yeah. um Then there's the the voice of Adrian Barbeau, which who was John Carpenter's wife at the time, star of the th fog. She's in escape from New York as well.

Speaker: um She is the voice of the chess computer that McCready is playing at the beginning. yeah Now ah he is playing chess against a computer And she checkmates him and yeah he opens the like door to the inside of the computer and pours his scotch inside it and says, cheating bitch.

Speaker: Yep. He's got a lot of issues. So this is the first of Emma's fun facts, Emma's fun facts. So Kurt Russell, Dreamboat. Dreamboat, extraordinaire. also you so see, like, the entire movie, I was like, wow, Wyatt really looks like his dad. Oh, big time, yeah. Like, especially when he has a beard.

Speaker: But, um, so he has this whole backstory that he came up with and for McGrady. McGrady? McGrady? McGrady. McReady. For McReady.

Speaker: Mac. For his character Mac. And so, like, that he came up with with John Carpenter. And they did a lot of sort of, like, you know, fleshing out this character, which you never really get.

Speaker: It never made the final cut of the film. There's this whole, like... He has this whole backstory that he was a um a ah ah helicopter pilot in Vietnam. And so he's like seen stuff. And so now he has PTSD, which is why he's an alcoholic. And um he's constantly drinking, which also like lends itself to why he's awake later on when the dogs are freaking out. And also why he doesn't freak out so much when he sees a bunch of gore. um because he's seen it all before in Nam. ah and But none of that made the final film. You would only know that from talking to Kurt Russell.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah, there's there's not a lot of backstory on any of these guys. It is not about that. it is But that's the great thing about this film, I think, is that like the backstory is there. It's in the layers of the characters. It's in the acting. And you can assume or you know put your own on there. But like it's...

Speaker: I love movies where like the work is already done and you don't have to say it. They can, you can just jump into the story, nitty gritty without all the exposition.

Speaker: Yeah, if this movie was made today, there would be way too much time devoted to his backstory. There'd be Vietnam flashbacks. yeah And all of that is unnecessary. Yeah, it's so unnecessary. Just give me the nitty gritty. Show me them just trying to survive in Antarctica during this crazy time.

Speaker: One last thing I did want to say about him destroying the computer ah when he loses chess is it's very much kind of the the theme of this movie. Like, it's better to be destroyed than it is to lose, right? Yeah. Which is a very Cold War, um mutually assured destruction kind of kind of idea. And it's very much what happens at the end of this movie. Like, yeah they can't they can't lose to the aliens, so they destroy everything. Yes. It's the same thing as what he does with the computer.

Speaker: And some might say, i mean, would you say that that's what that generation did to America? Big time.

Speaker: It's better to just burn it all down than to lose the the number one spot to a different country. Big time. Yeah. um Yeah, so the helicopter is shooting at a dog. Yeah, because someone is flying the helicopter and someone is shooting.

Speaker: Like you can't fly helicopter and shoot a rifle. Yeah, that makes sense. That makes sense. I was just really concerned about the fact that they were shooting at a dog. I was so upset. There's a lot of upsetting dog stuff in this movie. Yeah, a lot, which is why I was like, Katie loves this movie?

Speaker: Yeah. kitty loves this movie like that was literally that was my reactions during the dog scenes um it's it's not a dog it's okay to shoot a not a dog i know i mean some actual dogs get hurt pretty bad also but this thing is not a dog yeah and and this the actor playing this thing that is not a dog apparently was such a good actor on set The dog actor is incredible. yeah

Speaker: The dog acting in this is so good. That dog is so ominous and mysterious. Like, great job, buddy. Honestly, like, they need to have Oscars for dogs. What a good boy. Because that dog, the dog from Good Boy, um there's so many just talented dogs out there that need the the respect that they're due. ah Jed is the dog. Jed, yeah. Jed was an amazing actor and such a professional on set.

Speaker: Yeah. Jed has a Wikipedia page. Because he is a talented actor. um he was in White Fang. Oh, is he White Fang?

Speaker: The Journey of Natty Gann. Yeah, he's a wolf dog. Yeah, well, and an excellent actor. Yeah, he was born in 1997 and died in 1995. Damn. Wait, could have been born 1997 and been in movie 1982?

Speaker: 1977. He was 18 years old. That's a good boy. Yeah. You know, he just had to retire. Anyways, that's Jed.

Speaker: Jed Corner! Ooh!

Speaker: So they are, um the helicopter's shooting at the dog. ah The helicopter lands. ah there He's trying to throw a grenade at the dog. And all these all the boys from the the base run out to be like, hey, why are you shooting at this dog? yeah The grenade slips out of his hand. That guy runs to the grenade and he blows himself up.

Speaker: Oh, because he's barely in the movie. That's why I thought there was only one Norwegian. He's trying to get the grenade out of the snow, which is not what you do when you drop a grenade. you Yeah, just you run away. Why are you trying to pick up the grenade? The helicopter ah blows up. The guy the other guy is is trying to shoot the dog, shoots one of the guys, and um gets... Did they shoot him or does he get blown up? I don't remember.

Speaker: but He gets shot. They don't blow him up. Yeah, they shoot him. There's only one Norwegian blow right. Because fucking... Again, the helicopter blows up in a huge fireball. Yeah. Yeah. And the commander of the base, who... His name is Gary...

Speaker: Does one of the craziest things I've ever seen, which is he knocks the window out with the pistol and starts yeah firing out the window, which is... Right? You are in Antarctica, my my dude. Like, are you crazy? Nope. Right? I was like, well, what are you going to do when you're done shooting? you gonna You're going to just patch that up with some cardboard?

Speaker: It's very, yeah, very... very Especially when like later on in the movie, they're like, yeah, so it's going to get to be below 100 here in a few hours and we're all going to die. Broken all the windows. Right? It happens multiple times. They're just knocking out windows in this Antarctic base like it's nothing. This base has, like, not good insulation. They're just, like, opening doors left and right. They're leaving windows open. That's just sort of like, never trust a boy Never trust a boy. You in Antarctica. Like, I know you want to shoot the gun. It's important for you to shoot the gun, but, like... I don't know. Have some decorum.

Speaker: Step outside the door. Like, use yeah like use the door as cover. He wasn't that far. Anyway. Yeah, it's not far. um So they rescue the dog and we meet our boys. The boys. The boys.

Speaker: The squad. We have Mac, who's Kurt Russell, who is pilot. He's the helicopter pilot. We have Keith David, is Childs, the mechanic.

Speaker: We have Wilford Brimley, who is Blair, the biologist. We have... Richard Mazur, who is Clark, the dog handler.

Speaker: Richard Dysart, who is Copper, the doctor. We have um Donald Moffat as Gary, the commander, and then other people as well. And other people are there. Did you say window?

Speaker: We have Windows. we have Mac and Windows. Windows is the radio operator. We have Nalls, the cook, who has a skateboard. yeah We have Bennings, the meteorologist. He's got a skateboard.

Speaker: We have Palmer, who is the mechanic, who's a burnout and has a Walkman. And we have Fuchs, who's the other biologist. Yeah. So you said like all those names before. And i was like, yeah, OK, OK, OK. But get to Windows.

Speaker: Yeah, get to Windows. Get to Windows. Windows is your boy. Windows is the one that like I was like, oh, yeah. And then there's Windows because there's like one sequence where they're just like Windows. Somebody get Windows. Windows. And I'm like, is this guy's name actually fucking Windows? And it It's called Windows because he has glasses.

Speaker: Yeah. Windows. um He's the radio operator and he is really antagonistic right off the bat. They're like, Windows, can you get anybody? He's like, I can't get fucking anybody. And he he wears sunglasses inside because he's like, I'm so cool. yeah. yeah My name is Windows. Carusel is investigating the helicopter. He's like, this helicopter was absolutely loaded with kerosene, which is why it blew up in a giant fireball. um yeah They're like, what the hell was going on? Yeah.

Speaker: ah The commander, Gary, wants to save the Norwegians. And so he's like, Mac, get in the helicopter. You're going to fly me and the doctor over to the Norwegian base. Yep.

Speaker: And then we have these like ominous shots of the dog walking alone around the the base. Like we have all of these like shots of empty rooms. And then the dog is just like, like looking around.

Speaker: And we see, see a scene where there's a room. And we see the shadow of somebody in the room. We don't know who it is. And the dog walks into the room. And get.

Speaker: Exactly. When we get to the Norwegian base, we see the guy, ah the dead body of a guy at a computer who slits throat with a razor blade and all the blood is running out of him and it's frozen. It looks very cool. Yep.

Speaker: They find a disgusting hunk of flesh. Yep. And this is the moment that I was just like, who the fuck are these people? Because then like nobody really blinks an eye and they're like, what, what is this? Huh? Let's take it back to our base. This is not a big deal. um and And like the whole autopsy scene of the, of the hunk of flesh, they're like, huh?

Speaker: Well, what do you know? It's terrifying. It's like there's two heads that are melted into each other. right like Way too many arms and legs. like It's not normal at all. They're like, is that a person? I don't know. We should look We should poke at it and cut it open and and look at it some more. And I'm like, no, you shouldn't.

Speaker: Run away. Run away. You should burn that, which is yeah what they should have done in the first place. Yes. But they're screwed. They're screwed multiple ways every single time. That's the thing. Like, there's never a point in this movie where it's like, oh, this would have saved them. Because there's always, like, two things. Yeah. Like, from the beginning, they're screwed. Like, yeah the only thing they could have done was was kill that dog at the beginning.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. But, i mean ah I mean, who would do that to this poor innocent dog that looks so cute? Yeah. Yeah. Um... So Wilford Brimley, who you might know from diabetes commercials. da but films How old do you think Wilford Brimley is in this movie, Emma? Just take a guess.

Speaker: Well, it's the eighty s so people were not taking care of themselves. That's true. So I can either go super low or super high. Just how old do you does he look? How old does he look?

Speaker: He looks like he's 75, but I'm guessing that he is 50. He's 48. Are you fucking kidding me? it's and It's wild. ah Absolutely insane. He looks like an old man. Yes.

Speaker: And then he continued to look like an old man until he died in like 2015 or whenever. Yeah. Da British. Yeah. So he's the biologist and he's taking the organs out. He's like, these are normal human organs. Now, obviously this is not a normal human, but these organs are like, here's liver, here's the heart. Like this is all normal. And he's super chill while doing it.

Speaker: He's like, huh, what do you know? Well, looky there. Yeah, I mean, he's a biologist. He's interested in it. Then we have the dog scene where they're like, hey, put that dog in the kennel with the other dogs. And Clark, who's Richard Mazur, who's also in a ton of stuff, you'd recognize him. He's super young in this.

Speaker: He brings the dog in there and puts him in the kennel and all the other dogs are afraid of it. Like, yeah, so immediately the dog just like sits in the middle and like looks evil. Like how does a dog evil? Like I know i'm part of it is the way it's shot and everything, but also like part of it is the dog. a The dog is an excellent actor. That is your answer, Katie. The dog is an excellent actor.

Speaker: And the other dogs are immediately afraid of it. Like they can smell this thing is not a dog. Yeah, they know it's not only humans had a better sense of smell, we wouldn't be in this situation. Yeah, exactly. They knew are right off the bat.

Speaker: And immediately the dog's head bursts open like a flower. Yeah, terrifying. Absolutely terrifying. And it shoots off all these tentacles. Like it is it is so unlike any...

Speaker: like horror movie people had seen at this point. like there is this was This is why people didn't like it because it was it was weird and strange and terrifying. Yeah, and gross. Like a lot of it's so so gross. so how Okay, but like see now Katie.

Speaker: Katie, how many dirty fan fictions do you think people have written about the thing? oh I'm sure. I'm sure there's a lot of homo-ironic fan fiction.

Speaker: Now the problem with the movie The Thing is that it's difficult to, there's there's difficult SEO on The Thing. o But like, I can see someone who's really into monster horror getting real into The Thing. Uh-huh.

Speaker: Let's see. AO3, 293 works in The Thing. That's surprisingly low. A lot of these are mashups, it looks like. Oh. Here's, yeah, here's, um oh, here's a, here's a MacReady Windows slash.

Speaker: Oh. Melting a frozen heart. Oh. That's sweet. Where they fall in love. i didn't get that from their, like, the two of them together in the chemistry. I did not, I thought that he had more chemistry with. No,

Speaker: Childs. Anyone else? Yeah, with Childs. Yeah, he had way more. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, so why did we go Windows? Was it also because you just loved the fucking name Windows? like um Did you write this, Emma? Did you write it in the last, like, 12 hours? I can't say.

Speaker: Well, i've already closed the window, so I don't even know who wrote So yes, the tentacles start shooting out of the thing. Like it grows big spider legs. It like wraps up the other dogs and tentacles. It's so horrific. The dogs are trying to escape. It's really upsetting. They're trying to escape. And one dog is just like opening, like biting open a hole in the fence. And it's just so, it was so stressful. And I had both cats on my lap and I was just sort of like holding them for moral support. I was just sort of like,

Speaker: Because you had not seen this movie before. I had not seen this movie before. No. Clark hears all the commotion and comes back there and he's like, well, that's not good. ah Mac, Mac hears it, pulls the fire alarm. He's like, get the flamethrower. Yeah. Immediately.

Speaker: Right. So they, they go over there. He starts shooting at the dog and Clark is like, no, don't shoot the dog. I'm like, man, that is not a dog. that was it You need just need to calm down. You got to chill. Like I love dogs too, but like that, like that's not good. Yep. It bursts, it gets these giant like arms come out of it. Like it can turn into anything. Yeah. And by anything, it like doesn't have to follow the rules of what a creature should look like. Like yeah it's got the, the, the dog head, like is on a snake head that like comes out of it. yeah And like lots of, lots of things blooming open like a flower. There's lots of like, yeah

Speaker: Vagina imagery. Yeah, it's it's a little yonic and also very, very floral. Very like like buds of flowers with teeth and stuff. yeah Childs gets there with the flamethrower and ah they burn the shit out of it. Yeah, except for one piece that escapes up into the ceiling.

Speaker: Yeah. well and two And two of the dogs get away that were, we think, not infected. Yeah. yeah But we don't know. Right. ah Yeah, we don't know anything. We don't yeah know. Yeah, and and also, like, you know, Clark was with the dogs a lot. it it turns out Clark wasn't infected, so it wasn't him. But somebody that ah in that shadow, the dog could have interacted and infected multiple people before exactly it was killed. We don't know. We know it infected somebody.

Speaker: Yeah. There was that shadow. I think it was it was maybe... um The guy they do the CPR on later, maybe? We don't know who was, really. Do you think? Yeah. was somebody. Yeah, it was somebody. I'm sure somebody's tracked through and figured out who it is, but... Yeah.

Speaker: Not important. um Somebody goes, yeah, it's weird and pissed off. That's what Clark says yeah about It's like, yeah, understatement, dude. Yeah, exactly. It's weird and pissed off. um Understatement of the century.

Speaker: ah Blair, Wilford Brimley, is, like, looking at it, and he's, like, taking it apart and stuff, and and again, like, just... crazy anatomy like and being like super cool with it and he's like la la la la look at this he goes what what what and then he gets to like the skeleton which just looks like a tree trunk and he's just like what

Speaker: um he is like this is an organism that imitates other organisms and it can imitate them perfectly like look here's a dog head inside this thing like yeah it's yeah Unlike anything we've ever seen. And he's he's talking to Clark. He's like, did you notice anything strange about the dog? And he's like, not at all. and he's like, were you alone with the dog? He's like, this dog was wandering around this camp for a full day yeah before we put it in the kennel.

Speaker: So it could have gotten to anyone. Yeah. And that's when the paranoia starts. Yeah. Nobody really understands it yet, except for Blair, yeah because he's the biologist. Yeah. And he's like, wah, wah.

Speaker: They find the video, they had video from the Norwegian camp and they're watching that. There's nine hours of it. And they see that the Norwegians, oh, forgot to say, the first shot of this movie is a UFO crashing into Earth. ah Oh, I did not notice that.

Speaker: You didn't notice the UFO crashing into the planet the very beginning of the movie, right the credits? Oh.

Speaker: um not It's the only thing that looks bad in the movie. It's the only like effect that looks that looks fake. yeah Huh. I don't know. Yeah. Anyway, um the ah they find the Norwegians had found this UFO under the ice. And they... Oh, also, in the when the the guys are searching the lab in the first place, they find this giant block of ice that's got something carved out of it.

Speaker: Mm-hmm. So they put together that that this thing, like based on how deep it was in the ice, it's been like 100,000 years. Yeah. This thing has been buried in the ice and the Norwegians found it. They blew it up.

Speaker: who Which was a stupid move. They found this monster frozen in the ice and it thawed out and killed everybody. that's Yeah. That's what it does. Yeah. Because it's a parasitic life form. It um it just- not It's not a parasite. It's like a different thing altogether. Because a parasite needs a host to survive. That's true. And this doesn't. like It just needs to survive.

Speaker: It duplicates. like It can survive on its own. like It's just- it it needs someone to take the three It needs something to take the shape of. for Yeah. Yeah. yeah Yeah. Because like, it seems like it like eats the thing that it takes the, the shape of because nobody is left alive. So like it needs to absorb its creature. i don't know. I feel like it's a little parasitic in that like, it's like it absorbs the thing that it takes the shape of.

Speaker: yeah maybe um it does yeah because it can't replicate like clothes or anything because it always rips their clothes and that's part of that's one reason why they how they can kind of figure out if something's going on yeah um so yeah because like the next yeah because then they're all like keith david's like i don't believe any of this voodoo bullshit do you believe in this it's not voodoo bullshit it's science The cook is like somebody threw their their dirty like long johns in the kitchen trash can. And they're ripped and dirty. And like we don't know whos they are who they are. But it's somebody. Because when it like it it tears you it in into you. So it has to get rid of these clothes some way. That's one of the things about it. Blair, Wilford Brimley, is making a computer model about the assimilation of the things. And it's 1982. It's a little primitive. So it's going beep boop bop.

Speaker: Yeah. And it's like the computer is talking to him. It's like probability pretty people in the lab affected 75%. I'm like, what program is he using? Right. Is that Excel? um And then it's like he creates a model if it like reaches civilization. It's like will infect entire world in 27,000 hours after first contact. Yeah. Which is why I feel like it's like a parasitic life force.

Speaker: three years three years until it would would kill everything on earth yeah yeah which is kind of like pleribus i haven't seen pleribus i've seen the first episode and then i need to get back into it the um oh i've seen the first few episodes it's just because the main character she's so unlikable she's yeah and that's on purpose i love i love ray sehorn um yeah i think she's great yeah It's just like, I need to get past the fact that like, she's so unlike, she just keeps making stupid choices.

Speaker: Sure. Yeah. Um, yeah. I mean, I didn't watch it because someone is like, yeah, there's, there's eight episodes. It ends on a cliffhanger and there's not going to be another season for like three years because that's what television is like now. I'm like, okay, well, I'm going to wait three years.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. Mac has is like looking at the dirty clothes and he's like starting to put it together to Fuchs the other biologists like Blair's assistant is like I need to talk to you and they go out and sit in this like the tractor the snow cat and he's like Blair's locked himself in the lab he won't come out he won't answer anybody who's asking talking to him and but I found his notebooks and it's you know it explains what Blair already knows like yeah this is going to destroy and like Mac doesn't want to hear it. He's like, yeah, it's going to destroy all of human civilization. He's like, come on, man. It's cold. I want to go and get drunk. Right. He's like, come on, man. Why are you being a buzzkill? Like, why can't, why can't I just relax? We got it with the dog.

Speaker: um But he but he like he listens and he's like, okay, well, um let's get all this Norwegian shit and lock it in this room. And they're like, maybe we should burn this. And somebody's like, no, that's going to win somebody the Nobel Prize. No, you should burn it. You should definitely burn it. Burn it. um This is Bennings, who's the meteorologist. And Windows is helping him with it. And Windows is like, okay, I'm going to go in the other room. You stay here with this this monstrous corpse.

Speaker: He's like, yeah, okay. And we see like a tentacle like start to come out of the bottom of the thing. It's still alive somehow. Yeah. Yeah. It's still alive. And it's, I mean, we find out later it's every single organism has basically autonomy and can spread off into being its own thing. so like. It seems like from a cellular level. Yeah. Like. Yeah. Even if like.

Speaker: ah a tiny cell of this gets in because later Fuchs the biologist with the blood test well no the before that he's like we need to like we need to eat out of cans like this thing could put like a tiny part of it in your food you would never know and you could get infected that way like exactly They're fucked from there's no way there's no way you can get around that. Like, how are you supposed to like be on the lookout for every single cell? Like that's impossible. um And so like fire yeah does kill it. Yes. If you burn it all.

Speaker: Yes. You have to burn it all. Yeah. To the ground. um And then Windows comes back in the room and he sees Bennings is like covered in blood and wrapped in tentacles. He's like, oh, Oh, no.

Speaker: Bye-bye. He goes get everybody. They come back in and he's gone out the window. Yeah. they run outside and there's this like chilling scene where they're all around him in a circle outside in the dark. And he's sitting that he's sitting there and he has he looks mostly human, but he's got one crazy claw hand. And he just, he he like makes this sound, like screams this like alien sound. And MacReady like kicks over a drum full of like gasoline and lights him on. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. He's like, Nope, no fucking way. Which is like, that's what you gotta do. Like when that happens, like you gotta, yeah. And it seems like from what I'm gathering, either we're like away from the characters long enough to where they this creature can like completely reform or it gets faster at copying and absorbing. I think it i think it takes a while. i think that they are just like, I mean- not enough people believe it at first not enough like happens what they should have done is all stay in the same room together the whole time like they can't do that keep splitting up like that they're bunch of dudes what are they gonna do follow rules and be practical no exactly um it's ah he so they're like we gotta burn everything they burn down everything the norwegians had they bury the ashes um

Speaker: That's it. But unfortunately, more people are already infected because whatever got Billing, Bennings got away. Like the thing that they killed was the Bennings that didn't, was the thing that didn't get him. That was both left of Bennings. yeah Yep. um This is when Mac go gets to the helicopter and he realizes that it's been sabotaged. Yep.

Speaker: And then he starts hearing gunshots. So he runs back into the lab and Blair has um gone i mean i'm crazy. i was going to say gone crazy, but really he's right.

Speaker: Yeah. You know, he's he's destroyed the helicopter. He's destroyed the tractor. There's no way out. He's destroying the radio and the computers. Oh, so they can all go down with the ship.

Speaker: Well, I mean, it's like he knows if this thing gets to civilization, it'll destroy the world. Like, yeah there's no way that, there's no defenses against it. Yeah, the way that it's sort of like, it's framed in the scene, at least how I took it the first time I saw it, was he's sabotaged the helicopter. He's um going, as the Norwegians say, loco. Right, right.

Speaker: and famous norwegian phrase loco and um you think oh it's the creature like he wants to stay here like that was my first assumption no the creature wants out like if it was he's definitely not infected now if he was infected he would not have done any of this oh okay well maybe because creature knows yeah like the well i mean yeah you haven't seen the movie before yeah yeah The creature is in Antarctica and it can't get out. Like been there for thousands of years. like It doesn't want to be cold anymore.

Speaker: it will freeze in the ice. It will survive until like something else finds it. But you know, the ice can't kill it. yeah Only fire can kill it, but it can't get out of Antarctica.

Speaker: So Blair at this point is not infected. I think yeah we i think I know when Blair gets infected. yeah But he's not infected. But like first time watching it, my first thought is, oh, he's obviously infected. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. They they subdue him eventually. He does the the great thing where he fires all the bullets of a gun and then throws the gun. Like you love to see that.

Speaker: We love it. We love it. Classic Brendan Fraser. Yeah. Mac knocks him out and they get him and they're gonna they sedate him and put him in the tool shed. Yes.

Speaker: And he's like, watch Clark. Clark was alone with those dogs. like Watch Clark. And MacGreedy's like, okay, man. Yeah, he's saying like, he's telling them like, nobody can leave. Like, we yeah can't get out of here because then the the world will be destroyed. Yeah. um This is when I wrote Brimley is 48. Yeah.

Speaker: ah Okay, this is when um Gary, the commander, is like, well, the only thing we can do is wait for spring. And Mac's like, we can't wait for spring. We've got a thing. There's a thing about. Yes, like and he says the thing. He says it. And you go, he said it. He said it. He said it.

Speaker: She says, we don't know who's who. We have to figure out who's human and who's not. Because otherwise, if we wait, it'll just take more and more of us until we're all dead. Exactly. So he asked the doctor, Copper, he's like, can you come up with a test? He's like, sure, we could do a blood serum test. Like I could, if we have definitely uninfected blood, we could take um infected blood and and and and see if it reacts. And then we'll know if that person's infected or not. If you take your blood and it wouldn't react. Yeah. He's got science behind it.

Speaker: It's like, okay, that's great. Let's go get that, the the blood that we have. Like, yes this is a facility. We have blood in case someone gets hurt. Yeah, and let's go to the blood stalls. And it's all destroyed. It's all destroyed. The blood has been sabotaged again. So they're like, well, who had the key?

Speaker: and But like the thing is, did the thing think ahead like that far to know to do that? I think so. I think it's pretty smart. like Okay. Because later it, it because we know MacReady is not infected and it rips up his jacket and leaves it for someone to find.

Speaker: that's true. So they think that he's infected. So yes it's definitely hard intelligent. Yeah. Yeah. So it's destroyed the blood already. And they're like, well, Commander, eyebrows, you're the only one who has key.

Speaker: And he he's like, well, I would give it to the doctor or someone could have taken it off me. Like, we yeah there's no way of knowing. Yeah. And this is when they really start to turn on each other. becomes like this paranoid thriller. yeah Where like, you're the monster. No, you're the monster. No, you're the monster. We're all the monster. Windows runs and gets a gun. Gary pulls a gun on him. Yeah. And he's like, listen.

Speaker: windows is being real sketchy windows like you can i won't you can see that he's terrified yeah he's got a big head wound where blair hit him with an what we assume is an axe handle you yeah and like he's he's terrified and he's assuming that everyone else is a thing so his first reaction is to like be standoffish and run away and go get a gun um And but by doing that He makes himself look a little guilty And so you're like oh my god Is he the thing i don't know that's the problem like anything Anybody would do to to save Themselves or others could also be interpreted as being um Suspicious So it's really a low no win situation Yeah So Gary like pulls the gun on them and he's like listen, I understand that maybe you don't trust me. And so he puts the gun down and he's like, somebody else needs to be in charge.

Speaker: Yeah. And ah there's some discussion about it. And eventually Mac is like, okay, I'll be in charge. Yeah. Well, he doesn't volunteer. star at this movie Yeah. Everyone else is just like, Mac, it's you, buddy.

Speaker: Well, Childs is like, I'll do it. And they're like, no, man, you're too hotheaded. Yeah. Yeah. So they're like, okay, so a storm is coming in six hours. ah Copper, Gary, and Clark, the people that we think might be infected, we're gonna we're going to drug them and tie them up.

Speaker: Yes. And going to tie them to the rec And they're like, whoa, whoa, I'm the one doctor on this ship, or on this whatever, this compound. You do not want to give me drugs and drug me up. What if something were to happen and they're like, shut up, we're drugging you. It's like, there's no, mean, yeah, we're have to come up with something else. Because we can't trust you because you could have sabotaged the blood. Yeah. So then it's like we have a cut and he's like two days have passed.

Speaker: Right. And like, how long have these guys not been not slept? Like, because at one point he says he time he says he hadn't slept in two days at the beginning of this movie. Yeah.

Speaker: Well, he's got PTSD from mom. Yeah. This is where this is where Fuchs tells him that it could infect the food. And then Fuchs is like going out on his own and like investigating. This is where he finds McCready's torn jacket. Yeah. um And then shit gets fucked.

Speaker: And then Mac immediately, like we start to suspect Mac and he is like, where's Fuchs? The lights were out in the lab. He could be infected. They go out to try to find him and he's been all burned up.

Speaker: Yep. um We see, we check in on Blair. And at this point I think Blair is infected because he's He's made a noose. There's a noose hanging from the ceiling.

Speaker: yeah I think the thing got to him in between when he made the noose and before he decided to kill himself. I think if he hadn't been infected, he would be dead. Yeah. Right? He was going to kill himself. The thing got to him and stopped him. Yeah.

Speaker: And he's like, I'm ready. He's like calm now. He's like, I'm ready to come back inside. Please yeah let me come back inside. Now he's the thing. Yeah. um And he's super chill. Yeah. He's like, I'm not going to hurt anybody. Just let me come back inside. Yeah. And McCready's like, absolutely not. He's like, we'll think about it. And they leave out there. He's like, this seems really stupid to leave me out here. should just let me inside. Let me inside. It's OK. He's got a project he's working on out there. Yeah. Yeah. It's not little project. So they're all out there. There's a storm that's raging. They're all tied together. And they go off to look at his shack, Max's shack, because he's like, I turned the light off and now the light is on. So we need to go check that out. And then we cut...

Speaker: Because we're always doing this. We're always like seeing people together and then we're cutting away and we don't know where people are. Like it's intentionally like building that distrust because we don't ever see, there's we don't see everything. We see yeah there's there's skips in time, there's jumps and and cuts to keep us on edge. Which like part of the paranoia and- Absolutely, it's how you build it. Yeah. yeah So Nalls the cook comes back and he's like, I cut MacReady loose. because I found this like torn up jacket. So he's yeah definitely infected. And then somebody is like, well, couldn't the thing have just done that to turn us on each other? And he's like, no, you're stupid. Yeah.

Speaker: It's like, no, they shut up. They won't let McCready in the base. They're like, let him freeze to death out there. But he gets in through a window yeah into the dynamite room. He's strapped. So great. He's got so much dynamite and he's got a flare and he's like, I'll kill us all, man. Like, yeah.

Speaker: Like, i'll I'll do it. He loves this dynamite. And then he has a dyn piece of dynamite in his hand for the rest of the movie. Pretty much. Yeah. Yeah. um There's the one guy whose name I can't remember. Morris, the geologist.

Speaker: He gets knocked down and he like goes unconscious and they're like, oh, he's not breathing. We've got to do CPR. Yeah. This is the best scene in the movie. They're doing CPR and they're going, ah, ah, ah, ah staying alive, staying alive.

Speaker: ah ah, ah, ah, staying alive. And they're like, it's not working. It's not working. Quick, give me that defibrillator. And ah they they get the little, the shocky machine out. And then there he's just like, okay, clear.

Speaker: and And they're like, wow, that's a really low voltage. um They should have probably turned up that voltage if they wanted to just start his heart again. But then he goes clear and he does it again. I can't. Is it the the third time? It's like his stomach opens like a mouth. Yeah. The guy with the paddle, Copper, the doctor, his arms go in because he's expecting a chest there. And the mouth closes and bites his arms off. Yeah.

Speaker: Bites his arms off. And then he goes back and he's got little stumps, little stumps for arms. ah And it's terrifying. And also because like the mouth that is the stomach, the stomach mouth that like opens up is like, it is endless. It looks like it goes on forever. It's terrifying.

Speaker: Yeah. It immediately, like, start, his head, like, starts, like, becoming, like, plastic, and, like, the tentacles shoot out everywhere. And it's, like, the the little, the crazy little whip things start going. Like, time this happens, these, like, crazy little whips start moving around.

Speaker: Yeah. It, um, he, ah they start burning him His head comes off, and his head grows spider legs and starts skittering away.

Speaker: is just It's the best thing in the world. like And I'm just like, is nobody else seeing the spider legs? Yeah, like i I'm hooting and hollering. They eventually, yeah, MacReady's like, oh, what the fuck? And sees it and blasts the spider head thing. Right. Is that when he says, you've got to be fucking kidding me? Yeah, he says, you've got to be fucking kidding me. That's what he says. Which is Kurt Russell's favorite line in the entire movie. And if you quote it to him to this day, he will laugh.

Speaker: this is when they start tying people up um child's is like well i'm not gonna be tied up and he's like well i'm gonna shoot you and then yeah clark attacks him with a knife and he kills clark yeah he just straight up shoots him in the head which is really sad yeah he's got the flamethrower and the dynamite strapped to his chest because he's got everybody yeah he's like okay here's what we're gonna do we're gonna do a blood test yeah going everybody's blood.

Speaker: I'm going to get this wire, which is super hot. We know that the thing can't stand heat. yeah So I'm going to get the wire hot off the exhaust of this flamethrower and stick it in the blood. And if nothing yeah happens, we'll know you're fine. And if it reacts, we'll know you're the thing. Because this is when he he devolves. that He's just like, I realized that um each and every little bit of it. for I realized while watching that head scurry ah grow legs and scurry away.

Speaker: that each and every organism for this creature is its own creature. um So the blood will react. ah Because the blood, when they earlier when the the thing like is around, the blood moves toward it. The blood is definitely part of it. like i mean That's the blood coming out of that monster that becomes a tentacle when it gets Bennings the beginning. Yeah. yeah So they do the wire blood test scene. um He is Clark was human. So he shot him. But yeah. know And he goes, well, that makes you a murderer, you asshole.

Speaker: Yeah, they they test everybody and then they. um Well, and it gets to he's having Kurt Russell's having this like conversation with one of the guys where the guy is like baiting him basically being like, I'm just like, you're such an idiot. You're such an asshole, Mac. And he's just like, well, you know, you have the most reason that you're the thing because of X, Y and Z as he's like doing this test on another one of them. And he's like, so I'm going to test you last. And then he does the little blood test. And without realizing it, the blood goes.

Speaker: it Like it immediately like becomes some kind of creature, you know, like it shoots out of the like Petri dish that they're in So terrifying. Yeah. It's Palmer. It's the, um, the assistant mechanic to yeah Childs. And we never would have guessed.

Speaker: um Yeah. Immediately. And they're, tied to him on the couch during this. And um he like flies up to the ceiling. like The flamethrowers, of course, aren't working. Yep. um it His head splits open into Jaws and eats windows. Yeah. Poor windows. R.I.P.

Speaker: Yeah. um <unk>s ah They eventually do burn him. They immediately, because it runs outside, they go to get Blair because they need to test him.

Speaker: But he's gone, and they go into the tool shed, and underneath they find he was building a spaceship. A spaceship. He was building, not only did he miraculously have the time to build this little ice tunnel to a bigger ice tunnel, a bigger ice cave, he then built a spaceship out of pieces from around the camp, including- Which is- Which is crazy. It's yeah the one thing in this movie that doesn't quite like track anything. You're just like, oh wait, when did he start that? Was he an alien the whole time? Like, i mean what is happening? mean, it has been two days. He's been in there for days, I suppose. that's a full fucking spaceship. It's a spaceship, yeah. Where did he get those parts?

Speaker: I don't know, yeah, from the helicopter and in the snowcat, I guess. Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, so they've, so oh yeah, so at this point they know, they've got everybody except for Blair. um This is when um Sergeant Eyebrows is like, if you don't mind, i would rather not spend the rest of this winter tied to this fucking couch. Yeah. Yeah, it was so great. and so great So great. So bla so they they all know that they're and not infected. They just have to stay together. Yes, they will just stay together. Because they're like, no, we gotta split up because it covers more ground.

Speaker: Yeah. So they're chasing after Blair. They find Blair. Blair does this thing where he like sticks his hand into Gary's face and gets his fingers into his skin. And then he's dragging him around with the hand. It's so fucked.

Speaker: he becomes this giant monster. Um, they do blow him up. They get the dynamite. They blow him up. They're like, well, we're just going to destroy the base. Like there's no way out. Like it's over. Like we have to destroy everything. Game over. Um, so we're blowing up everything. better to be destroyed than to be defeated than to be checkmated in a chess game. Yeah. Yeah. And Childs and Mac are the only ones left. They got separated because of course they did. course they did. They get back together and they're like, everybody else is dead? And he's like, everybody else is dead.

Speaker: Yep. And it's like, how do I know you're not the thing? It's like, how do I know you're not the thing? Like the whole lab is in cinders. Like they're going to die. They're going freeze to death. Definitely. Yeah. He's like, and it's really hot right now, but you know, that's not going to last forever. And he goes, yep. I know. the buyers And so they're passing back and forth this bottle of scotch. And he's like, why don't we wait here for a little while, see what happens.

Speaker: yeah boomm boomm bu umm bo umm bum the end the end the end it's like such a cold out and you're like wait what wait more thing where's the thing yeah the thing we don't know they could both be human one of them could yeah could be the thing we don't know i mean like if they're sharing that bottle of scotch though then they're both the thing if one of them was the thing That's true. Yeah. If it can, if yeah yeah it passes that way. Yeah. Yeah. So.

Speaker: But I mean, best case scenario, it freezes again and then somebody else finds it when they come to rescue them from the the lab explosion. That's the best case scenario? Best case scenario for the thing. Yeah. Okay. I was going to say the best case scenario is that they killed the thing. They're both human and then they both just freeze to death real sad. And then they don't have to have flashbacks to Nam.

Speaker: Probably not, not that because this is the first of what John Carpenter calls his apocalypse trilogy. Yeah, saw that. In the Mouth of Madness and Prince of Darkness are the other two movies where they're all about the end of the world.

Speaker: Super. Can't wait. Yeah, I don't know. yeah i really just What really surprises me is that critics at the time didn't like champion this movie. like it's yeah It's wild. Well, it came out when a lot of really other popular sci-fi movies were coming out. Sci-fi and horror movies came out. So it's like i it's so different from those that it's yeah it's easy to be what like why everybody was like you know yeah yeah because it is it's very unsettling yeah it's very it's very unsettling um and gros yeah it's bleak and gross it's bleak and really really gross that that cpr scene is crazy yeah

Speaker: Oh, man. It's the first scene with the dog that got me with the dogs when it just starts going. on but i got it wow or And I'm just like, oh, my God. And it's not stop motion. It's like, it looks, I think it looks really good. Yeah. Even now.

Speaker: Yeah. I mean, like, it's it's pretty great. it's it's ah It's a really good movie. I very much enjoyed this. Thank you for making me watch it. I'm glad. I'm glad you liked it. Yeah. yeah Yeah. So that's pretty much the thing. Yeah, that's the thing. um And next week, guys, I mean, as you heard last week, um tis ho-a-ho-a-ho-a scene.

Speaker: We are continuing on with our beginning of November foray into non-spooky season, but still kind of spooky season. But like, it's not. We got to just sort of like blend our ways until we get to go get your ho-ho-hos.

Speaker: So we're doing the next in the Twilight series, New Moon. moon The annual tradition where Emma subjects Katie to watching the Twilight series one by one.

Speaker: I have not seen this one. all this Oh my God. I need to read the book before we watch it. this Okay. Good luck. ah Right. I mean like they're, they're YA books. How long are they going to take me? Like two hours? Maybe. I mean, they're long, but they are yeah poorly written. So it probably will fall by. I'm going to the audio book. I'm going to it on times five speed.
