Welcome to Prime Space, a Prime Coaching Academy podcast with your host, Elias Scultori.

Levels of ICF Certification: Differences and Purposes

00:00:15
Speaker
So you probably heard that the ICF has three different levels of certification.
00:00:25
Speaker
ACC, Associate Certified Coach, PCC, Professional Certified Coach, and MCC, Master Certified Coach.
00:00:39
Speaker
What does that mean?
00:00:41
Speaker
What's the difference?
00:00:44
Speaker
Why three different levels of certification?
00:00:47
Speaker
What is behind them?
00:00:48
Speaker
This is what I would love to talk about here today.

The Ongoing Nature of Coaching

00:00:53
Speaker
And my goal here for bringing this podcast to you is to hopefully bring an excitement to you about this journey.
00:01:07
Speaker
It's so beautiful to see the progression and how we in the coaching community have created this path of development for a professional coach.
00:01:23
Speaker
Coaching is not simply something that we take a little training and then we get certified and off we go.
00:01:30
Speaker
Coaching is ongoing.
00:01:32
Speaker
We are never done.
00:01:33
Speaker
We are always growing.
00:01:35
Speaker
We are always polishing.
00:01:37
Speaker
We are always discovering.
00:01:40
Speaker
And here comes this beautiful path that we as a community created that
00:01:48
Speaker
to give us some sort of a framework for this journey of development as a coach.
00:01:57
Speaker
And this is what I would love to talk about with you.
00:01:59
Speaker
How can I verbalize this in a way that puts these concepts in a nutshell for you and also excites you?

Translating ICF's Complexity for Students

00:02:09
Speaker
But before we go there, I want to say one thing.
00:02:12
Speaker
I take my job as a coach educator and as a mentor, supervisor very seriously.
00:02:19
Speaker
I'm a firm believer that the job of a coach educator is not simply to give you the core competencies.
00:02:24
Speaker
You know, the ICF has a bunch of lists, right?
00:02:27
Speaker
We have the list of the core competencies.
00:02:29
Speaker
We have the list that was created specifically for assessors, the list of the ACC bars, the PCC markers, the MCC bars.
00:02:40
Speaker
These three lists are guideposts or supporting the assessor in assessing recordings for certification.
00:02:47
Speaker
It's an assessor's tool.
00:02:50
Speaker
And then we have the list of the minimal skills requirement, which gives a, tries to summarize in a way what are the expectations for each one of these levels of certification.
00:03:02
Speaker
So all of these lists.
00:03:03
Speaker
And if I simply give you the list,
00:03:07
Speaker
it's going to be overwhelming to you.
00:03:09
Speaker
It's huge.
00:03:11
Speaker
There are so many concepts and ideas behind all of these phrases.
00:03:17
Speaker
And just by looking at the list, you're going to get overwhelmed about that.
00:03:20
Speaker
So I take my job very seriously as I am the translator for you.
00:03:25
Speaker
It is my job to be fully grounded and know these lists very in-depth,
00:03:35
Speaker
And then how am I going to put these lists, the concepts of these lists to you, present this to you so that it's manageable, it's usable, it's alive, it's organic.
00:03:50
Speaker
And I want you to keep in mind that this is my way of verbalizing it.
00:03:55
Speaker
This is not finite.
00:03:56
Speaker
This is not absolute.
00:03:58
Speaker
On the contrary, these are just a few concepts, foundational concepts, for you to become curious and explore even deeper what it truly means to be operating at these different levels of certification.

ACC Coaches: Framework and Client Focus

00:04:16
Speaker
Let's talk about ACC, Associate Certified Coach.
00:04:21
Speaker
So the expectation, my understanding here, the expectation for a coach that is operating at ACC level, and I put this in three little bullet points.
00:04:33
Speaker
First of all, there is an expectation that this coach understands what coaching is and that this coaching is operating as a coach.
00:04:44
Speaker
Not as a consultant, not as a mentor, not as an advisor, not as a teacher, not as a therapist.
00:04:52
Speaker
That this coach understands coaching and this coach is operating as a coach.
00:04:59
Speaker
The second thing that is expected at ACC that I notice it is expected at ACC level
00:05:06
Speaker
is that you understand that you have a basic grasp of the coaching framework.
00:05:13
Speaker
You understand that there is a beginning, middle, and end of a coaching conversation, and you are able to support the client into going through this beginning, middle, and end.
00:05:22
Speaker
What is the focus of the coaching conversation?
00:05:25
Speaker
What do you need for the conversation here?
00:05:27
Speaker
What is the expectation that you want for this conversation that we are going to have?
00:05:33
Speaker
You go through a process of development and at the end of the coaching conversation, you support the client into a movement forward.
00:05:39
Speaker
What is the action?
00:05:40
Speaker
What are you going to do moving forward?
00:05:43
Speaker
There is a rudimentary, if I can use that word, a clear understanding that there is form, that there is a framework, and you are able to demonstrate that.
00:05:55
Speaker
The third point at ACC level that I think is very important is
00:06:00
Speaker
is the idea that you are already mastering language and a coaching language.
00:06:08
Speaker
Your questions are clearly intentionally open-ended.
00:06:13
Speaker
There is a succinctness of language.
00:06:16
Speaker
You are giving space to the client for the client to process.
00:06:20
Speaker
The spotlight is not on you.
00:06:22
Speaker
Your language is streamlined enough...
00:06:25
Speaker
And we can see that you are bringing a certain level of intentionality around your language so that the coaching process can really flow.
00:06:38
Speaker
So these are the three points that I usually think of ACC-level coaching.
00:06:43
Speaker
Ready to go to PCC, the professional certified

PCC Coaches: Techniques and Insight

00:06:46
Speaker
coach?
00:06:46
Speaker
So if a coach is demonstrating that, what else?
00:06:49
Speaker
Okay.
00:06:52
Speaker
Isn't this it?
00:06:54
Speaker
No, there is a lot more, right?
00:06:56
Speaker
This is just ACC.
00:06:58
Speaker
At PCC level, I feel that the number one, especially after we created the PCC markers,
00:07:06
Speaker
I see PCC as the coach really understands the science, the technique, the form of the coaching conversation and is able to demonstrate this form, this framework of the coaching conversation, the technique of coaching conversation with no doubt.
00:07:27
Speaker
There is no question that this coach understands and is able to demonstrate the technique, the framework of the coaching conversation beautifully.
00:07:38
Speaker
There is complete command of the technique of coaching.
00:07:43
Speaker
That is number one for me at PCC level.
00:07:46
Speaker
So framework is absolutely crucially present.
00:07:51
Speaker
Accession agreement, language is polished, open-ended questions, the understanding of the distinction between different questions, questions that support the client into examining the presence, questions that support the client into imagining the beyond,
00:08:11
Speaker
There is truly a command of these skills, supporting the client into a movement forward, into action.
00:08:20
Speaker
And it's not simply like, what are you going to do?
00:08:23
Speaker
But there is a whole support of the planning.
00:08:26
Speaker
So the technique of coaching is really clear.
00:08:31
Speaker
And this coach is able to show and demonstrate that.
00:08:35
Speaker
Besides that, that's not enough.
00:08:38
Speaker
Besides that, at PCC level, all of this technique is serving the client, is supporting the coach in supporting the client to have a depth of exploration.
00:08:52
Speaker
So the coach is really being able to demonstrate that they can use these skills that they have command over to support the client into a deeper level of exploration and a deeper level of insight.
00:09:10
Speaker
So those are the two points that I'm... And you can see that they are loaded.
00:09:15
Speaker
Those are the two points that I think it's very important at PCC level.
00:09:19
Speaker
Okay, so if the coach has command over technique and bringing the client into a depth of exploration, what else is there?
00:09:29
Speaker
Oh, then it's where the magic happens.

MCC Coaches: Integrating Science and Art

00:09:34
Speaker
And it's so interesting because the gap between PCC to MCC is huge.
00:09:40
Speaker
Okay.
00:09:42
Speaker
And it's huge in my point of view because now it's the time for the coach to go beyond the technique and integrate.
00:09:55
Speaker
The way I see MCC, Master Certified Coach, is where all of the training, all of the experience that the coach has gathered now becomes a part of who we do and how we show up.
00:10:13
Speaker
It's the artistry of coaching.
00:10:17
Speaker
At PCC, there is no question about the technique of coaching.
00:10:23
Speaker
At MCC, there is no question about the mindset of coaching.
00:10:31
Speaker
Here the coach has fully embodied the concepts of coaching and it's living these concepts in front of the client.
00:10:44
Speaker
It's really mastery.
00:10:46
Speaker
It's really a place where the coach is so much at ease in the balance between the form and the flow, the science and the art of coaching.
00:11:00
Speaker
to be at service for the client.
00:11:05
Speaker
One of the metaphors or stories that I teach my students around this process of learning and developing our coaching skills and mindset is similar to when we learn how to drive a car.
00:11:25
Speaker
At first, when we start driving a car, there are so many things to think about.
00:11:29
Speaker
The clutch, especially a stick shift, right?
00:11:33
Speaker
You have the clutch, you have the gas, you have the brakes, you have the gear, you have to steer, and the wheel, and you have the mirror, that you have to look, and the pedestrian, and the signs.
00:11:45
Speaker
There are so many things.
00:11:47
Speaker
But the more you do this, then you become more at ease with this.
00:11:52
Speaker
to the point that you are able to drive on a highway with lots of cars around you, and you are having a conversation with someone who is in the passenger seat, and you are operating and utilizing the car without even thinking about it.
00:12:17
Speaker
That is what happens at MCC in my point of view.
00:12:20
Speaker
We are in such a flow.
00:12:24
Speaker
And it's not that we forgot the concepts of coaching and the foundational skills of coaching.
00:12:30
Speaker
But these concepts are so ingrained in us that
00:12:36
Speaker
that we no longer have to think about them, they will show up naturally because of course we're going to bring this to our clients.
00:12:46
Speaker
That's the mastery, the artistry of coaching.
00:12:49
Speaker
And I hope that this excites you and gives you the energy.
00:12:53
Speaker
the intentionality to pursue this journey.
00:12:57
Speaker
Imagine the value that we can bring to our clients when we are operating at that level.
00:13:03
Speaker
That's so beautiful and humane.
00:13:07
Speaker
And this is our challenge.
00:13:10
Speaker
that we have and I hope that you embrace that challenge and continue this journey with me thank you so much for inviting me to walk this journey with you and I am excited to support you and learn from you along the way
