Vaya con Dios: Point Break vs. The Fast and the Furious

S2 E3 · The Movie Showdown with Rock & Rob
Avatar
256 Plays11 months ago

This week Rock & Rob matchup two movies with almost identical plots: Point Break (1991) and The Fast and the Furious (2001). However, if they were going to talk about Coronas and family they knew they would need the help of their friend and Fast and Furious expert Justin Ellis to guest judge. These two movies get put through seven rounds of questions and lead to the most in-depth breakdown of the Point Break beach football scene, meatball sandwiches, street racing and more. This was a close one but just remember, it don’t matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winning’s winning.

Hollywood Remakes: Point Break vs. Fast & Furious

00:00:53
Speaker
nicholless we appreciate it. Remember, leave us a five star review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify and you will get a shout out. Well, Rock, every so often a movie comes out that is so amazingly fun that Hollywood decides to repeat it beat for beat 10 years later. That's the case with this week's movies, Point Break and The Fast and The Furious. And I knew if I was going to be talking about The Fast and The Furious, there was no way I could do it without one of my closest friends and fellow lover of fast cars, Vin Diesel and Coronas.

Guest Introduction: Justin Ellis

00:01:21
Speaker
We've got Justin Ellis on the show today.
00:01:23
Speaker
What's up, Justin? It's all about family and Corona. It's an audio medium. He's holding a Corona for anyone that's curious. Justin, Alex and I, we all went to college together. Justin and I worked together for years after graduating. He now lives in the Charlotte area, has a super cool son that will most likely play for the PGA one day and a daughter on the way. He's the CDO, which stands for a Chief Development Officer for Thompson Family Services. So if you're looking for a nonprofit to donate to, this is a great organization that helps feed and foster kids and does a lot of other cool things. I'm excited to be here. I knew I had to bring Justin on this episode because him and I have seen every fast movie together since fast five in 2011. And you know what? They can keep making them and I will keep seeing them no matter how bad they get. So Justin, this leads me to my guest question of the week.

Appeal of the Fast & Furious Franchise

00:02:13
Speaker
What is it about the Fast and Furious franchise that has led to it being as big as it is and why will you and I see every single one that comes out no matter how bad they keep getting?
00:02:23
Speaker
I think that the answer is the same. As big as it is, it kept being as crazy as it was every single movie. There was at least three or four times in the Fast and Furious movies where we sat there at the end of the movie, we're like, what could they possibly do? Go to the moon? And then in the next movie, they went to space.
00:02:43
Speaker
Yep. And I will raise my son to believe that the Fast and Furious franchise is the most important thing that happened in the pre-creation of his birth. Rewatching Fast 1 for this episode, seeing where it all began, it's such a different movie than what it is now. I do think that there were little seeds thrown in this that the future directors kind of pulled from and said, hey, can we keep amping the stakes? Are you a fast fan, Alex? I've seen a handful of them. I can't tell you which ones I've seen. I mean, I've enjoyed them enough. I don't not like them. OK, but you're not a no. You two are like probably the biggest fans of these movies that I've ever met. I'm somewhere like a few levels lower. Well, you guys might be wondering why Point Break, why Fast and the Furious? But Alex, why don't you give us a little breakdown on Point Break? Sure.

Summary of Point Break

00:03:28
Speaker
Quick summary. Have you ever seen The Fast and the Furious? Well, it's that, but with surfers robbing banks. This movie was released on July 12th, 1991. Couple other movies that came out around that time. On July 3rd of that year, Terminator 2. July 19th of the same year, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, which also stars Keanu Reeves, friend of the podcast. Very close friend. boys in the hood also came out on the same day that year
00:03:51
Speaker
very well- received it is fun to look at what else came out when we cover these movies t two was a phenomenon and so the fact that point break came out in the same month obviously it hurt it in terms of box office i feel like that's one of the reasons why point break had a much stronger run post-theaters. Point Break was directed by Catherine Bigelow. You might know her from The Hurt Locker, which won an Academy Award. Written by Rick King, W. Peter Eiliff, James Cameron, who was married to director Catherine Bigelow at the time, and he did an uncredited rewrite. Point Break had a budget of $24 million. dollars Box Office brought in $83.5 million. dollars Rotten Tomatoes score of 69%. Google Audience score of 88%.
00:04:32
Speaker
ah Fun little fact, this film made over $20 million dollars in US rentals alone. Like I said, kind of lived on after its theater run. We are talking about the same James Cameron, right? Oh, yeah. That's got to be James Cameron's lowest total amount cost for a movie in his entire career. It's got to be. Which means that I will be representing the fast and the furious summary. Have you seen Point Break? It's that, but with street racers robbing semi trucks.
00:04:58
Speaker
Released on June 22nd, 2001, directed by Rob Cohen, there's been some pretty bad allegations about Rob Cohen that have come out. We're not gonna get into it, but I don't think he's that great of a guy. Written by Gary Scott Thompson, Eric Bergquist, and David Ayer of Training Day fame.
00:05:15
Speaker
Budget for Fast and the Furious was $38 million dollars and it brought in $207.3 million. In 2001, guys, come on now. These movies came out 10 years apart, but 91 and 2001 feel like very, very different.
00:05:31
Speaker
And I think like 2001 to like 2011, I'm like, yeah, they're the same. But like 90, oh geez. Fast and the Furious has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 54% and a Google audience score of 86%. Fast and the Furious also launched nine sequels and a spinoff.

Similarities in Plot: Point Break and Fast & Furious

00:05:46
Speaker
Like we said, these two movies are almost beat for beat the same. So Rock, I know this is a little early in the episode, but let's do our connections corner here. And why don't you show me all of the connections between the Fast and Furious and Point Break.
00:06:00
Speaker
So The Fast and Furious, it basically is the same movie as Point Break. Here's the plot of both of them, and stick with me here. So the main protagonist is in the FBI, or working with the FBI, to go undercover to infiltrate a gang that is stealing things. That gang is involved in extreme adrenaline pumping activities. He initially suspects a rival gang as being the bad guys and leads a raid on them that fails and gets him in trouble with the head of the FBI who's always the jerk. His older, wiser partner knows that it's the group that he has gotten close with doing the theft. He just doesn't want to admit it because he has gotten very close with them and has fallen in love with one of the female acquaintances that is also a waitress. He eventually realizes it's them and at the end allows the group leader to escape, effectively leaving police work in the final shot. Just to get a little more in the details here, both films are set in Los Angeles. Both have a scene where the main group leader breaks up a fight where the protagonist is getting his butt kicked. Both movies involve drinking coronas. Both movies have a protagonist that orders a tuna sandwich. Both movies feature Neptune's Nest, which is a restaurant near Malibu. In both movies, the last heist goes awry after changing the formula of what they typically do. The last shot of both movies is the same, with the hero walking towards the camera and then out of frame on the right side.
00:07:11
Speaker
I think it's really interesting that director Rob Cohen and producer Neil Moritz claim that Fast One was inspired by the 1998 Vibe article, Racer X, but we know better. You're not fooling anybody. Literally from that article, the main character is like kind of similar to Dom Toretto, I guess. But they talk about this thing called Drag Wars, which they renamed Race Wars, which doesn't actually play that big of a part in the overall plot. So look.
00:07:36
Speaker
point break, Fast and the Furious. They're the same movie. I wish Dom had a like a different last name. It was like a state. Oh yeah. But not a good one.

Game: Favorite Movies of the Stars

00:07:43
Speaker
Dominic Maryland. Justin Alex and I like to do this thing called a best friend challenge. We'll each list movies and if we match them up, we win. Since there's three of us, I actually thought we would take the four stars of these movies, the two lead characters in Point Break and the two lead characters in The Fast and Furious. And we'll each just name our favorite movie that that person has been in and we'll see who matches up what. Alex, we'll start with you. What's your favorite Keanu Reeves movie? You know, I had a lot of back and forth on this, but I'm just going to go straight up the first Matrix. All right, Justin, what about you? I'm going to go devil's advocate, man. I like it.
00:08:19
Speaker
I, uh, if you would have asked me like seven years ago, I would have went replacements, but I think I have to go John Wick. I love a good revenge movie. All right. No match-ups in that one. Let's shift over to Paul Walker. I'm going to give a shout out to our podcast and say Varsity Blues. Ooh, I like it. I gotta go Fast and Furious 2. Fast and Furious 2. He carried the whole movie. He did. I like it. Alex, I am also going Varsity Blues. I've gotten a lot of hate on the socials for putting that in my top five sports comedies. People do not like that choice. I'm standing by it. I love varsity blues. Yeah. Let's just keep bringing that up every episode. All right. What about Patrick Swayze, Alex? Again, I'm going to go podcast pick. I'm going to say Roadhouse.
00:09:00
Speaker
Yeah, I'm Roadhouse all the way. I am also Roadhouse. You just cannot beat that movie. Patrick Swayze, that man was on a heater for five years. And I'm telling you Roadhouse is one of his best. And last but certainly not least, Alex favorite Vin Diesel movie. I kind of went back and forth on this one. I'm just gonna say the Fast and the Furious, the first one.
00:09:19
Speaker
I will die on this hill. Iron Giant is Vin Diesel's best movie. It's the only reason he got to be Groot in the Marvel series. It is his best movie. No one needs to see his face. He killed it in Iron Giant. I almost said Guardians, but

Vin Diesel's Best Roles: Debate

00:09:34
Speaker
I'm like, all he says is I am Groot. And I'm like, I don't know. like He made me cry as a child in Iron Giant.
00:09:40
Speaker
Well, I am going to take his role as Groot, but not in the Guardians movies. I love Avengers Infinity War. That movie is elite. It is kind of cheating because literally he just says I am Groot, but he does it in a really good way. He's in it. Alex and I matched up to. So I guess you win. I guess we win. I would hope so. We talk about movies every week together. What I wanted to do, Justin, was I wanted to list our top five favorite fast movies, but then Alex told me that he doesn't watch the fast movies. I want to hear you two match up yours, if you could do it quickly. I would love to see if we're actually friends or if it's just on paper. We got a guest judge. We got to do something. Okay. We'll go number five down. So top five, number five is the worst of the five. So number five is seven. Okay. Number five is Tokyo Drift for me. Oh, we're not friends. How dare you do a disservice, Tokyo Drift. For the longest time, I thought that movie was so bad, but then watching how they tied it back into things, like, I like it a lot. Alex, this is what you're missing. See, what they do is they take mediocrity and they turn it into diamonds. Well, I know what I'm watching after this. I'm watching all of them right in a row. Justin once texted me. What are your plans for this day? I was thinking we could watch every fast movie. It's only like 27 hours. so What's your number four? Tokyo Drift is my number four. Oh, all right. So that's closed. I did fast six as four. All right. Number three. Fast six. Number three for me was fast seven. Number two for you. Fast original. Me too. Number one. Fast five. Fast five. Nice. That was fun. We were pretty close. You had the same movies. That's pretty good for a movie series with 11 movies. Yeah. All right, let's jump into these categories. Round one, best cast.

Keanu Reeves in Point Break

00:11:25
Speaker
All right. Well, we have Keanu Reeves, everyone's favorite. He plays FBI agent. I don't know if you knew that he's an FBI agent in this movie named Johnny Utah. Keanu's perfect for this. He's got that vibe already. Cleans himself up. He's the ex quarterback, plays that role pretty well too. Just feels like a role made for Keanu. Top 2% in Quantico. He's a smart dude. I do, I agree with you. I think Keanu is perfect in this movie. He does, like you said, have that perfect mixture of you can believe him as an FBI agent, but you also believe that he would fit in with a bunch of surfers. So like there's that scene when him and his partner, they're getting reamed out for not producing anything on the surf gang yet. And McGinley's character asks if they have anything remotely interesting to say. And Keanu just replies, Caught my first tube this morning.
00:12:09
Speaker
sir It's such a dumb line, but when Keanu says it, it works. So Catherine Bigelow actually fought to have Keanu in this movie as Johnny Utah. The studio and the producers, they wanted Johnny Depp, Val Kilmer, or Willem Dafoe. Willem Dafoe isn't interesting. I don't see how that would have fit. I could see him as almost any other role in that movie. I get Johnny Depp and I get Val Kilmer, but not Willem Dafoe.
00:12:31
Speaker
As part of his research, Keanu Reeves, he actually observed real FBI agents in Los Angeles. And he practiced with the UCLA quarterback coaches to help with the football seed. That's dedication. Step one, I think they just told them wear jeans. That's very important when you're playing quarterback. So Johnny Utah is an amazing action hero and quarterback name. So I want to give you my top five action hero names.
00:12:54
Speaker
Honorable Mention, Han Solo, and Indiana Jones, both played by Harrison Ford. I'm putting them at Honorable Mention because neither Star Wars nor Indiana Jones are true straight action movies, but those names were too good to be left off this list. Number five, Mason Storm. This was Steven Seagal in Hard to Kill. This is a wild movie, and Steven Seagal is, well, he's Steven Seagal, but there's no denying Mason Storm is an elite action hero name. I dare you to find a Steven Seagal movie that you wouldn't characterize as a wild film. Very fair. Number four, Snake Plissken. This is Kurt Russell in Escape from New York and Escape from l LA, nicknamed Snake because of his ability to silently creep up on people like a snake, which is cool and terrifying at the same time. Number three, Axel Foley, Eddie Murphy in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise.
00:13:45
Speaker
an awesome name, an awesome theme song, and the recent Legacy sequel titled Beverly Hills Cop Axle F shows the name's power with fans. Number two, James Bond. I only need to say five words. The name's Bond, James Bond. And number one, John. Insert your favorite one here. We've got John Rambo, or John McClain, or Johnny Utah, or John Matrix, or John Wick. It seems every cool action hero's first name is John. Any of those would be worthy at number one. So I'm gonna cheat a little bit and give it to all of them.
00:14:15
Speaker
All right, we also have Patrick Swayze. He's back. He plays Bodhi. Justin, you you mentioned his run of films leading up to Point Break. Dirty Dancing, Roadhouse, Ghost, and then Point Break. I challenge you to find a run and correct me if I'm wrong, Alex. I'm pretty sure that that was in five years. Yeah, try to rank those ones, you know.
00:14:33
Speaker
and We're not trying to make an argument here that Patrick Swayze is the greatest actor to ever exist. But no guy has played four different roles in five movies. And pretty different roles, yeah. I would say outside of maybe Harrison Ford, Patrick Swayze was killing it around this time.
00:14:49
Speaker
There's nothing else that comes, you know, top of my head. If you go to our social media post about top comedy runs, I don't know how, but some people just interpreted it as top runs and people have strong opinions on other actors that had really good runs. Like someone's going to be like, well, Humphrey Bogart was like really good. Right.
00:15:09
Speaker
Yeah, so Patrick Swayze actually here originally auditioned for the part of Johnny Yuta before he landed the role of Bodhi. Rob, what do you think about the Keanu Swayze one-two punch? Keanu and Swayze in the same movie, their chemistry was really good. And I don't even know who you would say is one and who you would say is two. At the time, you would have said Patrick Swayze is one. Now, if people get to this movie, they probably look at Keanu, but you can't discredit how famous Patrick Swayze was at this time. There's actually a lot of fun little Swayze Easter eggs in this movie. So when Bodhi is introduced to Johnny at first on the beach, Johnny's got that ridiculous surfboard. Bodhi remarks, your surfboard reminds me of a 57 Chevy that I used to have. Well, he actually drove a 57 Chevy in Dirty Dancing. Also, when Johnny Utah is listing the places he followed Bodhi to, he says that Bodhi had lunch at Patrick's Roadhouse. And as we all know, the star of Roadhouse.
00:15:59
Speaker
Patrick Swayze. One more for you. I don't know if you want to call this real life imitates art, but Johnny Utah became an FBI agent after a knee injury ended his football career. In real life, Keanu was once an aspiring hockey player who suffered a knee injury, a la Gordon Bombay, I guess. And he went on to become an actor while Patrick Swayze also suffered a serious knee injury playing football. And he went on to become an actor. Interesting. John C. McGinley plays FBI director Ben Hart. You may know him from Scrubs as Dr. Cox.
00:16:27
Speaker
I was going to say shout out to John C. McGinley figuring out his character for Scrubs from Point Break. I have not watched Point Break since watching Scrubs and watching it again. 98% of that man's character was identified and confirmed in his character from Point Break. I mean, props to him. One of the most iconic TV show characters in my opinion. and His intro scene is so good. There's no question what type of person he is when this happens. So he's talking to Johnny Utah.
00:16:55
Speaker
Can you have a solid breakfast, Utah, sir? All the food groups, avoiding caffeine, sugar, I like to make sure that all my people maintain sound cardiovascular fitness. They don't drink and we sure as hell don't smoke. Sir, I take the skin off chicken, good man. He doesn't think Keanu's paying attention to him. He's like, Special Agent Utah, are you receiving my signal? Zero distortion, sir. Then he takes that massive bite of the donut. Then we get the real famous.
00:17:20
Speaker
ah You're a real blue flame special, aren't you, son? Young, dumb, and full of coke. Like, let me tell you, after having to do IVF yeah for two kids, boy, would I would love to be young, dumb and full of kids. So McGinley, he is like the Billy Bean of bank robberies. So he uses like his money ball tactics to solve crimes. He says that there were one thousand three hundred and twenty two bank robberies in L.A. County in a year. Do we think that's accurate? It's a lot. How many is that a day? What, four? Three point six two bank robberies a day in a county. We're just talking the county. I mean, I can tell you this. In 1992, for the entire year, 2,600 bank robberies in l LA. That would make sense then. It sounds like Dr. Cox

Diverse Cast of Point Break

00:18:06
Speaker
knew what he was talking about. 2,600. 2,641 bank robberies, highest year ever. That checks out then. How were there even that many banks? What are you guys doing? You know in Tommy Boy, when-
00:18:19
Speaker
He goes into the bank and they think he's trying to rob him and the security guard just like throws the gun at him. I mean, that's what the LA people must be doing, right? I'm sold. We get Gary Busey returns. Man, we got a lot of ah returners here. He is FBI agent Angelo Pappas. He was in black sheep as the crazy guy lived in the bus. He's great in this. So he's like the older, I don't know if wiser is the word, but he's the older partner for Johnny Utah. When we meet him, the intro is pretty funny. So he's got the blindfold on for that random brick diving thing that they're doing. Talking about his new quarterback punk partner pulls off the blindfold and Keanu's just standing there doing his wave. Such a weird wave, but I love it. He's the only one that had the theory about the surfers. Got a lot of heat for that, but got to give him credit. He had it right. I think Busey was good in this. No, he's great. Like I enjoyed him. Just enough goof.
00:19:05
Speaker
I'd like to hear an argument where you think that Busey is not good in this movie. I would too. Busey kills it. He starts off, he does the blindfold thing where you're like, why are there bricks in the bottom of the pool?
00:19:17
Speaker
um And then rounding out are more of our main characters. We have Lori Petty. She plays Tyler. You might know her from A League of Their Own. The one thing I want to mention about Lori Petty is that scene where she's teaching Keanu to surf. Very reminiscent of the scene in Forgetting Sarah Marshall when Paul Rudd is trying to teach Jason Siegel to surf and they're both doing it just on the sand like, Papa, Lori Petty was not doing it for a humorous effect. But I saw that and I was like, wait, I've seen this before. Apparently, Petty had never been in the ocean before making this movie. How is that possible? Especially because she was a pretty famous actress at the time. Like she had money. You're not going on a beach vacation. Maybe that just wasn't a thing. Who knows? One more character I want to mention, not a main character. But if you notice the skinny long haired guy named Tone in War Child's Gang. Well, that is actually Anthony Keetus of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is really random.
00:20:06
Speaker
Well, all right, let me talk a little bit about the cast of The Fast and the Furious. We have Vin Diesel as the corona and family-loving Dominic Toretto. You know, what like when I was looking up Vin Diesel for this, I forgot he was in Saving Private Ryan.
00:20:22
Speaker
Solid performance. His career went in a very different direction. At this point, though, like I'm not really sure where Vin Diesel ends and Dom Toretto begins. Like I think they're the same person. Here's a question for you, though. Dom Toretto versus Bodhi from Point Break. Who's cooler? Who's tougher? You're asking two very different questions. Bodhi doesn't try to be cool, which like makes them pretty cool. There's no question that Bodhi is cooler. I will say this. Let's go back to the War Child fight scene. Bodhi uses his legs a lot. He's got those kicks. That's a Swayze specialty. Dom doesn't have a lot of kicks. He's more of the closed punch. I wonder how many shots he could get in before some swift kicks to the head. But let me ask you this. Has Bodhi ever been rock bottomed through a table from the second story and gotten up fine? See, I was gonna argue, has Bodhi ever thrown himself from a car across a tank and a four-lane intersection into another car window? So how much would a leg hurt? I think tougher has to go to diesel. Also, what I'm gonna say is, like, Bodhi couldn't survive a hundred-foot wave. Dom Toretto rides those in his sleep with cars. True. But has he ever thrown a dog at someone? Honestly, yes, probably. Probably has.
00:21:32
Speaker
We mentioned this on our Gone in 60 Seconds episode, but Timothy Oliphant actually turned down the role of Dominic Toretto because he thought it would be too similar to Gone in 60 Seconds. I love Timothy Oliphant, but no, give me Vin Diesel all day. Moving on, we've got Paul Walker as Brian O'Connor. Paul Walker, this is his third episode for us. We got Varsity Blues. She's all that. And now Fast and the Furious. Here's something interesting for you. Christian Bale and Eminem were considered for this role.
00:22:01
Speaker
You only get one shot. Wow. A lot to process. Nice. Is Paul Walker actually like a good actor in this movie? Keanu Reeves in Point Break led to Paul Walker's character in Fast and Furious. There was a lot of, I'm really confused about where I am and I don't know if I'm actually in a movie. which I would describe was Paul Walker's entire character for three quarters of the first Fast and

Critique of Paul Walker's Performance

00:22:25
Speaker
Furious movie. You're very right because there was times where I was waiting for him to react to something that was said or happened and he didn't. I feel like his direction in this movie was just don't say or do anything because Paul Walker has pretty good charisma. Like in Varsity Blues, he jumps off the screen. She's all that. Even though he plays like the bad guy, the charisma is there. And I would say it comes back later, but like I don't look at Paul Walker in Fast One and think, wow, I'm really drawn to that guy in this movie. It's more Dom. 100%. Paul Walker, not so much. Brian O'Connor's not the brightest. Was he in the top 2% of his class, do you think?
00:23:02
Speaker
We have Jordana Brewster as Mia Toretto. Jordana Brewster was a thing, right? She was popular for a hot second. Name something else she was in. No, but she was popular in like the Maxim cover girl type of way. A hundred percent. So the role of Mia was originally written for Eliza Dushku, but she turned it down. In addition to Dushku, Natalie Portman, Sarah Michelle Geller, Kirsten Dunst, and Jessica Beal all auditioned for the role.
00:23:26
Speaker
We've got Michelle Rodriguez as Letty Ortiz. Here's something. Neither Michelle Rodriguez nor Jordana Brewster had driver license or learner permits before production of this film. Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez were actually dating during the filming of this movie. Didn't last. Rest of the crew, you can look them up. They were cool, but they didn't get brought back really for a reason. I know people will be like, Oh, Vince came back for a couple of the movies, but like, not really. I do want to mention we've got Ja Rule in this movie, but that was such a pop culture move. Like I'm guessing they wanted to use his music and they're like, Oh, if you let us use like a bunch of your songs, we'll put you in the movie. I do think they wasted their one F word allowance. He like yells the F word at Monica. They could have used that in a much better place. Do you think they got Ja Rule because they didn't get Eminem? Oh, maybe. Or they wanted both? I don't know. The last character I want to mention, and this character became hugely popular in our culture after this movie, and that is the speed-boosting Nas. Nas is such a cultural phenomenon now. I mean, I don't know if anyone actually uses it, but everyone knows what it is. Even if like you aren't like a Fast and Furious fan, you know what Nas is. And this is what started the Nas trend. Justin, before you make your decision on which cast and crew wins this round, I do want to point out only one of these movies has spun off 10 other movies.
00:24:46
Speaker
That's fair. Is that a good thing or a bad thing, though? Alex, you so you stole my thunder here in terms of Cast Man and you know how much I love you, Rob. You can't argue. Point Break wins this one. Yeah, I really can't argue with that. I'm a massive Keanu Reeves fan and I love Patrick Swayze. Those two together are amazing. I can't be mad at that decision. All right, that takes us into

Iconic Scenes in Point Break

00:25:06
Speaker
round two. Best moments.
00:25:10

So the first bank robbery scene in Point Break is great. They call themselves the ex-presidents. They all have the masks on. Very iconic. And then when you think about some of the other heist movies with masks, you know, you got the town with the nun masks, the clown mask and the dark knight. Yeah. Heats, hockey masks, solid bank heist.
00:25:26
Speaker
Those are good mass too. So these guys, the ex presidents, they say they've hit 27 banks in three years, but how much money have they actually made? So when you consider they're only hitting the front, so they're only getting the tellers, they're never going to the vault. How much are they actually making? Like, well, how much is it actually in those drawers? Cause they all seem like decently sized banks. So you have to think like at least $5,000 to $10,000 each time. And remember it's a 90 second max. Like that's like the number they're hitting. It's not that much time and not everyone's grabbing money.
00:25:56
Speaker
I mean, I know my big man ever carries more than 5000 at a time in the colors. I think it's a good strategy to go in, not go for the vault 90 seconds in and out. But I don't know if that risk is worth the low reward that I feel like you might get. Yeah, right. um All right. Then we got Keanu. He's surfing for the first time. I'm a sucker for scenes like this when he's like, how hard can it be? And then they just show him like getting destroyed by the way. Yeah.
00:26:23
Speaker
I like those kind of scenes. Besides surfing, there there is another very important sports scene, and that is the beach football scene. Yeah, they all pull their cars onto the beach to illuminate the field. It's got to take a lot of vehicles to pull this one off. Let's just break down this game a little bit of what we see. and So, OK, Bodhi's team scores two and a half times, and we say the half because we don't know if he actually scores on the play where Keanu tracks him down. He ran a mile. I'm assuming he crossed the end zone.
00:26:49
Speaker
Johnny Utah's team only scores once, which is pretty pathetic for him being a former all-conference football player at Ohio State. Yes. So they do play with an offensive line. He is taking snap on her center, which that seems like very professional for a beach football game.
00:27:05
Speaker
The last way that they show is a flea flicker that Bodhi runs. Johnny Utah breaks five blocks to chase him down. Yeah, he was a quarterback. And while I think he was probably pretty tough, I heard someone say that his ability to shed blocks to make that tackle makes it seem like he threw a lot of interceptions when he played. He knew the drill. I didn't come up with that. That's I believe it was Mark Titus. So Bodhi runs for 13 seconds of screen time before he's tackled. That's more than 100 yards.
00:27:33
Speaker
Because Bodhi is athletic and he is running in sand. I don't know. It was a long run. And we don't know if he scores. We'll give him half a score. They're a very fun scene. We have the war child fight. So Bodhi does show up to help Johnny Utah get out of that. Just comes in guns a blazin. He dominates Swayze. Such a good fighter. So according to the stunt coordinator, they held fight training sessions for the cast on the weekends. And allegedly Anthony Keetus was the only one to not show up, which is why his character gets knocked out with one punch. So that was his punishment for missing training. Then you get the raid scene. They appear in the window. The guy's putting probably a Corona into his Cheerios. I think that they're just trying to set the tone of like, how messed up can we get? Have you ever put beer in your Cheerios? Can't say I have. I feel like Justin has once. I'm going to plead the fifth on this one. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Johnny Utah. He gets beat up again this time by the naked lady in the shower. Not winning in a lot of fights, Johnny. No, no. She must have been so slippery too. Like maybe he was like, I don't know what to touch. She almost tombstones him.
00:28:32
Speaker
He got destroyed by her. And then he goes outside and he fights the other person. He gets beat up by that person. He's getting his face shoved in the mower. Yeah. He's about to get his face lawnmowed off. And then Gary Busey just shows up and shoots the lawnmower. It's a bold strategy. It is. You know, you could have probably shot the person that was pushing his face into the mower, but no, not Busey. Gary Busey's ability to hit a small target is quite impressive at the beginning. Somehow he loses that ability towards the end of the movie. That's right. Well, I mean, I wouldn't put it past him that he probably did have a drill lined up like this if he's blindfold diving for bricks. I mean, he's probably got something worked yeah up for shooting lawnmowers in case it comes to that. Then we have the second bank robbery scene. Keanu and Angelo, they're sticking out the bank. Gary Busey tells him to go get him two meatball sandwiches. It's time for lunch. Angelo, it's 10 30. Right around that corner, there is a sandwich shop. They sell meatball sandwiches. Best I've ever tasted. Would you go get me two? Which begs the question, is meatball sandwich a good steak out food? No. I'm gonna say no. Utah, get me two. I love that line when he just yells Utah, get me two. You're right, not a good steak out food because like if you do have to move, if your hands are all saucy, that's not smart. But so then Utah goes and gets it, literally walks up to the counter and he says, I want two meatball sandwiches.
00:29:50
Speaker
and a tuna sandwich. Within a second, they bring the food back. Have you ever been any place that just had meatball sandwiches like readily available to go? Can't say I have. So you're assuming that you've got hot meatballs and sauce right next to a cold tuna. Yeah, right. You know those restaurants at airports that have their meals already prepared to go and they're all just like sitting in like a warmer. It had to be something like that. Maybe that's all they served.
00:30:17
Speaker
Oh, but at that point, the sauce is seeping into the meat, like the bread, like no one's ordering that. Nothing about this is good. OK, so the ex-president show up, they're robbing the bank right behind Angelo. Pretty funny scene there. Then we get the car chase and then the foot chase. So car chase and then we're at the gas station where he lights the gas pump like a flamethrower, which then sets off the foot chase, which is amazing. like There's a lot of things that happen in this chase. It's a well filmed scene.
00:30:44
Speaker
even the part where he has like the wherewithal to lock the sliding glass door and they kind of jumped through it and then the lady is beating him up like a golf club or something. Yeah. And then he gets out and there he gets a dog thrown at him to make direct eye contact as he's locking that door and then to wait like you're already a couple seconds ahead and he goes no I'm gonna pick up this absolutely massive pitbull and I'm going to wait here and baby throw it to you. Yep. And we also just for a second talk about the fact that I will search for the rest of my life for a gas pump that looks like a flamethrower.
00:31:23
Speaker
Also, all of a sudden, the gas is shooting out of that pump at about 65 miles an hour. The PSI on that gas pump, that Lincoln that they didn't catch would have been filled up in about six seconds. That's a good point. Some other things that happened in this chase, I don't know if you noticed, but they both make it a point to run through like a little kiddie pool in someone's backyard. It was very strange. And then Johnny Utah hurts his knee, Bodhi gets away, which ends a very entertaining, very classic scene. Then we have from the skydive scene to the end. We're packed with action. The skydiving scene is great because we know that each of them knows who the other actually is. The tension is there. He has that good line. You got to earn trust, which is rich coming from a dude that just robbed a bunch of banks and threw a dog at him. Right.
00:32:08
Speaker
Patrick Swayze, I don't know if this surprises anyone, but he was actually a very accomplished skydiver and did a lot of the jumps himself. He actually made 55 jumps in total and it was eventually told to stop for insurance purposes. I i would love to have been in that conversation. But this is where we get that fantastic line from Keanu.
00:32:25
Speaker
wake a comment i am an f b i agent i know man isn't it wild The fact that he says I am and not I'm an FBI agent, very important there. It is very important. So we have the bank heist where Bodhi takes Johnny Utah. This is where things kind of go sideways for him where he decides now's the time I'm going to go for the vault. Why does he do that?
00:32:49
Speaker
My only thinking is that he knew they were caught. Like they were basically gonna have to live on the run. This is gonna have to be the last heist we need to go for it. But it's just very against everything that he stood for. It was poor judgment. Agreed. Alright, so they track them to the airport and this is where Gary Busey's character gets killed. Utah got him killed, right? I think so. They're doing the shootout. They don't know he's there and he yells, Angelo, don't fire. And then they know he's there and then they shoot him and kill him. so It's like, dude, I had it. Uh, we have the second skydive scene. So this is when he jumps out of the plane with no parachute, which I mean, that is crazy. Is there anything that would cause you to jump out of a plane with no parachute? Let me play devil's advocate here. At this point, what does John in Utah have to live for? He's so focused on one, catching Bodhi and two, saving Tyler. And in his mind, he's like, I have to get to Bodhi to make sure that we can save Tyler. Gary's dead. Like, he's gotten his superior officer killed. He's got a bomb knee. Like, he's got nothing else to live for. He's probably going to get fired, yeah.
00:33:52
Speaker
Here's my question. He's alone in the plane after Bodhi jumps out. He has a gun. There's radios on planes. Why not go to the dude flying the plane and say, I need you to radio in to the FBI and say, this is where we are. Come and arrest Bodhi and save this person. It's too logical. If it's me, I think I'm running through 48 other alternatives before I'm like, Oh, let me jump out and see if I can catch up to him. You're thinking much more strategically than a very, very poor FBI. off Are we sure he was top 2% at Quantico? How many people were in his class? He was the only one in his class and he was He was so he was number two out of one. Yeah. So then Johnny Utah tracks Bodhi down in Australia, the 50 year storm, which apparently is a real thing. I did look it up. Yeah. Yeah. He sees him staring out to the water and he just kind of like drops the mask. Yeah, it's cool. It's a good reunion scene there. And then he lets him he lets him go surf the big wave, go get him when he comes back. He's not coming back. And then he quits the FBI at the end. Also, I just want to point out he gets his butt kicked in that scene, too. He gets beat up a lot. I read this great observation by this Reddit user named KFBR 392. So the name Bodhi, which we're told is short for the Bodhisattva, is a term in the Buddhist religion, meaning an enlightened being who out of compassion forgoes nirvana in order to save others. which is really fitting since Bodhi literally helps Johnny Utah, quote, unquote, attain enlightenment. He even says to Utah at one point, we can exist on a different plane. We can make our own rules. Why be a servant to the law when you could be its master? So this leads to the final confrontation where Utah catches him and gets him in cuffs. Bodhi begs him to allow him to experience this once in a lifetime natural phenomenon. And then that is when Utah finally achieves his enlightenment, seeing the world as Bodhi does. So he lets him go, he says, the famous, i am con di which translates to go with God. The final shot is Utah throwing away his badge and Bodhi crashing in the wave, ending his time on Earth being granted Nirvana since he helped Utah gain enlightenment. Now, do I think that's what the writers were actually focused on when they were like, let's call this dude Bodhi? You know, maybe it's James Cameron. Who knows? Maybe. That's the most James Cameron thing of any part of this movie.
00:36:07
Speaker
All right, let me tell you about some of my favorite moments from The Fast and the Furious.

Opening Scene of Fast & Furious

00:36:11
Speaker
The opening truck robbery scene, it's great if only for the fact that we see that car drive under the semi truck, which is something that I think about once or twice a week. Whenever I'm driving and I'm on a highway and I see a semi truck, I always think, could a car fit under that? but I've seen it in a few other movies. I just think this is the one that popularized the move. So then we've got Brian going to Toretto's Cafe. He orders the tuna with no crust, which like, what is Brian seven? No crust? like what What are you doing, dude? You're gonna literally make this waitress cut the crust off of your tuna sandwich. That's the worst flirting I've ever seen. That's the scene we see Dom just sitting from behind with his like hulking shoulders. So then Vince shows up and he just wants to fight Brian for like no reason other than the fact that Vince likes Mia too. It's a valid reason.
00:36:58
Speaker
As I was just saying it, I was like, OK, I kind of get it. Dom breaks up the fight. That's a great tough guy moment for him. He points if it's like you embarrass me. It's pretty good. So the first race scene really cool, even though they're like insane. That does have fast one stand out apart from like point break because the surfing scenes are like fine. But you don't remember point break for the surfing scenes. The fast racing scenes make it stand out. So Dom's crew enters in like the perfect flying V formation. Do you think they drive like that everywhere they go?
00:37:28
Speaker
Absolutely. Hey, we got to go to Target. Let's drive. That's when Brian says ah he doesn't have money, but he puts his car up and he's like, but if I win, I take the cash and I take the respect. Once again, I don't know how well acted it is, but I like the line. I would assume here that we don't have a lot of street racing experience in this group. I think you're safe to say that, yeah.
00:37:48
Speaker
So I grew up on Long Island. I street raced with a guy that I knew a couple times and he had a tricked out BMW. When I tell you that when this movie came out, this was the coolest thing of any kid that didn't have the ability to go faster than 62 miles an hour in their mom's minivan. Everybody was fast and the furious when this came out.
00:38:08
Speaker
Like this was the coolest thing. And I'm sorry, no offense to the surfing community. There's no point in time in history where surfing was considered that cool. Because no, not everyone can do it. Like everyone can drive a car. You might not be good at racing, but like it's attainable. You can watch the scene and Fast and Furious to be like, Oh, I could do that. Whether you can or not. yeah to be seen Yeah, you could try. Most people probably can't even get on the board. No, because I'm thinking, oh, I need a wetsuit. I'm going to get sand. I don't want to do that. But even if you're out in the ocean on a surfboard, it's really hard to get up on that. Yeah, right. So first race scene, Brian, he can't beat Dom. Everybody knows you never granny shift. Brian wasn't even double clutching like he should. He's lucky that 100 shot and Nas didn't blow the welds off the intake. Which I don't know what any of those words mean, but it's something that Vin Diesel says in the movie. So I'm just going to take his word for it. You sounded like you knew what you were talking about. The what are you smiling at speech from Dom to Brian? Ask any racer, any real racer.
00:39:06
Speaker
It don't matter if you win by an inch or a mile. Winning's winning. I use that quote very often in my life. If you attributed that to Bill Belichick or like any of the big sports guys, if you said one of these guys said it it would be on ESPN, it would be on every yeah sports site, it would be everywhere. That is an iconic line. Dom and Brian escaped the cops together. You ever think about how you would escape the police in a situation like that?
00:39:32
Speaker
I think about it all the time. I'm like, if I'm driving down a road and I'm going too fast, oh, if a cop were to like, throws lights on it, could I get away? My first thought is always, you turn your lights off immediately, turn into the first neighborhood that you can find, and then just like, park in somebody's driveway. Park in somebody's driveway, yeah, I think about that all the time. I've done this. I was going way too fast. Cott turned his lights on. I found the next exit. I turned off the exit. I turned all the way around. Went but the opposite way on the highway. You absolutely knew where I was. And then we just played that game. I did it for like two or three times. Eventually turned my lights off and drove the opposite way down the highway for about two or three miles.
00:40:11
Speaker
That's a good one. It's extremely dangerous and something that I would never, as a parent now, don't do that. I'm not recommending this on this podcast, but I will say it worked. But if you do get caught, you're screwed. You're done. There's high risk, high reward. Dom and Brian driving around, that's when we're introduced to Johnny Tran and his gang. They like shoot the car, so it blows up, so then Dom and Brian walk slash take a taxi back to the party.
00:40:39
Speaker
They go back to the party. He yells at Jesse. Jesse's like hooking up with a girl, like making out with her and he yells at her to get a room and he says, you can't detail a car with a cover on. I didn't know if that was good advice or the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life. Is that like a weird play that you shouldn't wear protection? That's how I took it. I was like, oh, he's saying like, oh, you can't, you know, whatever if you have your clothes on. But, like, you can. We all all went to a Christian school. Oh, my gosh. Yep. So, like, when they get back, they show Mia. She's upstairs in a room. She's, like, doing homework or something. Like, what is she doing? How old is she in this? I was going to say, is she in high school? I kind of got that from this scene. I was like, yeah, it made me rethink. She literally is on her bed with, like, a textbook out or something. She's, like, writing something. And then ah she comes downstairs when she's trying to act all, like, sexy towards Brian. And she's, like, drinking a Snapple. You guys remember Snapples? Are they still a thing?
00:41:29
Speaker
Yeah, of course they are. Snapples are a thing, but they're in plastic bottles, and I have a a real problem with it. ah We were all in the age when they were really hugely popular in high school. They had the Snapple facts, and you'd have them at lunch. That pop off top off of a glass Snapple can. Oh, so good. So good. Nothing beats it. Vince yells at Dom. He's like, why'd you bring the Buster here? And then Dom's just like, the Buster kept me out of handcuffs. Then they call Brian Buster for the rest of the movies. That's where it came from. Then ah this is where we get the iconic endorsement of Corona. You can have any brew you want, as long as it's a Corona. I would like to take this time to shout out that this episode is sponsored by Meatball Sandwiches and Coronas. Neither of which are giving us any money for it. So 35 minutes into the movie, it's revealed that Brian's an undercover cop, that the crew he's searching for has stolen $6 million dollars of merchandise. Where's all that money going? Because they are not living like they have
00:42:27
Speaker
I know they have to give a percentage to the truckers that tip them off and whatever, but even if it's like $4 million, dollars like where's that $4 million dollars going? We have the opposite problem between Point Break and Fast and Furious here. Yeah. Point Break wasn't stealing enough. That amount of money was shocking to me to hear. I have to point out the first barbecue scene here because it started a trend in like all of the other movies that they would have the big family barbecue. This is when Dom shows Brian, his dad's charger. That's the best car in the movie, right? What about the Eclipse?
00:42:56
Speaker
My sister had an eclipse when I was in high school. I thought it was very cool. I'm a sucker for the charger. No, that's a good one. They did this on purpose. The cars that they chose that were cool. yeah There was not a single other significant muscle car outside of Dobbs.
00:43:12
Speaker
No, there wasn't. There was like 60 something Japanese vehicles in the movie. And I think there was three American cars. There was the Charger in this scene. There was Brian's like Ford truck that he drives around in the beginning. And then in the post credit scene with Dom driving around Mexico, he's driving another like American car.
00:43:29
Speaker
And Dom's dad's car had something that didn't exist at the time, a 900 horsepower racing engine. He invented it. He created it. ah The quarter mile at a time speech is really good. you know He says he heard his dad scream, burning to death, but the people around said it was me that was screaming.
00:43:47
Speaker
And then that's why we find out Dom went to jail because he was like angry at the dude that assisted in the death of his dad. They were like really trying hard to be like, well, I know he went to jail and he stole six million dollars, but he's not a bad guy. Yeah. um So I was shocked when I heard this this time around. So we know the big theme of the Fast and Furious franchise is family. It's like the most important thing to Dom next to Coronas. But in Fast One, it's actually the cop that Brian works with that gives the family speech. He tells Brian there's all kinds of family in reference to Dom's group. Dom doesn't mention family at all. What strikes me, Rob, is that you're assuming that when they made this movie, they thought that they could make 10 more. These guys took a risk.
00:44:36
Speaker
You're right. You're right. And then the family thing stuck and they're like, yeah, that's what we were doing. So then we get that scene where Brian and Dom race the Ferrari. That's actually producer Neil H. Moritz in the Ferrari. They go to eat shrimp. This is another scene where I was like, Paul Walker is not doing his best acting. He's trying to subtly ask about getting in on outside money opportunities with Dom. And it's just like the most forced you sound like a cop thing I've ever heard. And Dom doesn't pick up on it.
00:45:05
Speaker
So similar to Point Break, basically from the race war scene to the hijack gone wrong to the final scene of the movie, great sequence.

Emotional Reveal in Fast & Furious

00:45:13
Speaker
So they're at Race Wars, Dom's gang goes to do another job, doesn't go well, Brian comes out of nowhere, saves Vince, and then calls into the police to come get help. That's the best acting in the movie is Vin Diesel's face when Brian calls the cops. He doesn't even have to say anything, and you just know the anger and betrayal he feels. So then they get back to the house. Jesse gets shot down by Johnny Tran's crew. Dom and Brian chase after them. Then when that's done, they decide to have one last street race. Quarter mile.
00:45:47
Speaker
If you pay attention from the point of view of the train as Brian and Dom cross the tracks, Brian actually wins this race by a few inches. So, good for him. Then, uh, Brian hands him the keys and lets him go. And that's it. So you're asking best moments. That's what I have to vote on. Unfortunately, I feel like I'm a little bit skewed in this, but you don't get a much more iconic moment than Vin Diesel making that lie. You gotta go Fast and the Furious on this one.
00:46:11
Speaker
There's a couple really good quotes in Point Break, but there's two monologues by Vin Diesel in the fast movie that is really, really good. And then, you like you said, you add in all the racing scenes. It's like, yeah, they're pretty memorable. All right. So we are one to one heading into round three. Better title or soundtrack.
00:46:33
Speaker
All right, Rob, we know you love this kind of stuff, but they're talking about getting a match on the hair and point break. Like those left at the crime scene. And then they find that it was a Latigo beach and then Keanu pipes up and says, nice point break. That's where we get the title. Point break. I do like when they say the title in the movie, does it count in fast and furious because in a job rule song, they say fast and furious. I don't think it counts.
00:46:56
Speaker
I think they were like, Ja, make a song that says the fast and the furious. Anyway, sorry. Getting back to the title, originally they wanted it to be called Johnny Utah. Then they renamed it Riders on the Storm, which I believe is a door song. Yeah. But the lyrics just did not match up to what the movie was about. So they scrapped that. It wasn't until halfway through filming point break that they landed on the title. In Spain, ah the movie is called Le Yaman Bodhi, which translates to they call him Bodhi. I kind of like that.
00:47:23
Speaker
It sounds cool. I think Point Break's better, but music, I mean, you know, we don't really have too much of a soundtrack here. um You have songs by Rat and Jimi Hendrix. The title The Fast and the Furious is cool, I guess. There's like a 1954 movie called The Fast and the Furious that they bought the rights for. Working titles for the movie included Racer X, Red Line, and Race Wars. Fast and the Furious is better than all of those. I mean, the nice thing about The Fast and the Furious is that they've kind of gotten creative with the other titles. so It flows really nicely. It's definitely not bad. Like I said, there's a lot of Ja Rule in this movie, including the song called Furious that says Fast and the Furious in it. We've also got Rollin' by Limp Bizkit that was a staple during this time. I mean, that's the best song in the movie. There's a song by Benny Cassette called Watch Your Back, and it's like, watch your, watch your, watch your back. And it's during the fight scene between Vince and Brian. And I don't know why, but that always stands out to me. I don't like the song, but it just fits.
00:48:19
Speaker
ah So at the party after the first race, the song area codes by Ludacris you can hear and Ludacris would go on to play Tej in most of the fast sequels. I know this is my movie, but I really don't like the like weird house trap hard rock electronic mix that they play in fast one. It really dates the movie to like 2001. But also, that's the tone they were going for. They wanted that, like, street race vibe and, like, that's what it was at the time. And so, like, I can't hate it for it. All right, Justin, who's winning title and

Fast & Furious Soundtrack Critique

00:48:49
Speaker
soundtrack? I looked up the other night the official soundtrack for Fast and Furious of the 11 songs, I think, that are on it. Ja Rule is featured seven times. Nice. That's commitment. The quality of music in Point Break is absolutely better. And I will say this, this is a tough combination because I think that the name Point Break is really strong. But if I'm doing the title and soundtrack together in terms of how they mix into each other, it's got to be fast here. So Fast and the Furious take a two to one lead heading into round four. Plot holes, cringiness, random questions.
00:49:25
Speaker
As a reminder, I will be pointing out plot holes for point break. Alex for the fast injuries, plot holes for point break. So in the final skydiving scene of the film, Bodhi tells the pilot to climb to an altitude of 4000 feet. The average freefall takes 50 to 60 seconds from roughly 13000 feet, which is like three times that amount. 4000 feet is still considered a safe jumping altitude, but it would require immediate deployment of the parachute like as soon as you got out of the plane. It would take roughly 26 seconds to hit the ground from 4000 feet and MythBusters actually like broke this down. Utah and Bodhi fall for 90 seconds when they're skydiving from that distance. So no shot. That timing is matching up. um Here's a question.
00:50:07
Speaker
In that scene, Keanu jumps out of the plane, grabs onto Bodhi. He's got the gun in one hand, and he's holding onto Bodhi's parachute in the other hand. And he faces a dilemma. He can't pull the parachute cord because he has the gun in his hand, so he decides to throw the gun so he can pull the cord. why not just put the gun in his belt? like he He was wearing a belt and pants. Yeah, that's a good question. Cringiness, I got nothing. Random questions. So the surfers recognize Utah. They're like, oh, do you know who this is? That's Johnny Utah. And they're like, oh, Johnny Utah, wow. They say he was only all conference. Do you think a bunch of surfers from California would recognize an all-conference quarterback from Ohio State? Without the internet, I don't think anybody outside of his city would recognize an all-conference quarterback. Unless they went to the Rose Bowl. But a bunch of surfers? And even if you got a Rose Bowl ticket, like, are you remembering that that's what he looks like? um So John C. McGinley's character blames Keanu that the raid went wrong. But why is it Keanu's fault? Wouldn't he have had to have gotten that approved? Like, hey, here's the evidence. I think it's this group. Let's set up this raid. Somebody said yes to it. So listen to this, the ending of the movie, and it's all done in one day. They skydive, they rob a bank, then the police come, then they have the airport shoot out, then they skydive again. How long was that day? It's a long day. Here's something. So Keanu plays a former Ohio State University quarterback in this movie, and he also plays a former Ohio State quarterback in the movie The Replacements, which we covered on the show. I want to give you guys my top five actors who played same sport athletes, but in different films.

Actors in Similar Sports Roles

Okay. So my honorable mention is Charlie Sheen. He was a pitcher in major league and an outfielder in eight men out. The wild thing, Rick Vaughn, he's like great, but Sheen wasn't actually in eight men out that much, which is why he's only honorable mention here.

Number five, Adam Sandler played a quarterback in The Longest Yard and arguably the greatest movie linebacker in history, Bobby Boucher in the movie The Waterboy. Number four, Vince Vaughn. Now stay with me. He was a running back who had a cannon in Rudy, which led to Rudy getting on the field in the movie. Not real life. That's not how it really happened. And in Wedding Crashers, he was a former first team all state quarterback that could put the ball wherever he wants. He'll make it rain out there. Hot route.

but Number three, Woody Harrelson was a very believable basketball player and white man can't jump, and he helped invent the alley-oop in semi-pro. Number two, the sports movie goat, Kevin Costner, played a catcher in Bull Durham, and then a pitcher in For Love of the Game. He's got a solid baseball swing, good pitching motion. His role is Crash Davis, legendary. And number one, Keanu Reeves. Not only did he play a left-handed quarterback in Point Break and The Replacements, but both characters also played college ball at the Ohio State University. In point break, he was at all conference and in the replacements, he led his team to the sugar bowl before blowing it because of all the footsteps. All right, Alex, tell me about the plot holes in fast. So in the opening scene, when the truck gets robbed, this happens twice in the movie. What does the truck driver doing? He just lets it happen. Some guy shoots a harpoon thing, like claw thing through his windshield, pulls the windshield out. He just keeps going. He just is like, ah well, this guy's c climbing a rope while we're all going 70. Just let him do it. I want to see this play out. But like there had to be an easier way to rob the truck, right? Oh, yeah, absolutely. Like make him pull over, rob him. We've all been there. Yeah. Anyway, we've all been there.

How did Johnny Tran know that Dom was in b Brian's car? Oh, that's a good one. OK, so when Brian breaks into Hector's garage and then he gets found by Dom and Vince, why are Dom and Vince there in the first place? I wish I could answer that question. um OK, so the first race scene is supposed to take place over a quarter mile, as we all know, which takes approximately 10 seconds. That's where the term 10 second car comes in. However, the race takes almost two minutes of screen time and it shows the vehicles driving in excess of 150 miles per hour.
00:54:03

that was the longest quarter of a mile ever well along those lines of the last quarterm mile race between b brian and dumb when the railroad tracks are going down it actually takes one minute and nine seconds for them to cross the track just timing in both of these movies just i mean i know we throw it out the window in film and television but they just didn't even like yeah what are we gonna try um There's no way that Dom would survive the crash at the end, right? So he does like a full spin, flips the car over onto the roof before landing upright. You disrespectful, Simon. And this was in the 1970s Dodge Charger. Yeah, those 70s cars, we all know how safe they were. They were made out of straight steel and American prowess.

Um, okay. So for cringe, you get, I'm gonna say the F word, but the slur, not a good look. Moving on. I don't think that Jesse would have raced Johnny Tran. He was around Dom and then enough to know not to do that, right? And he puts his car up too. There's no way that they would have let him race in his Volkswagen. No. Um, race wars. What exactly was it? They just like pull up and then like, whoever they're next to, they race like, or do they have to like pick who they race? I needed more info on race wars. It just seemed like they like registered and pulled up and they were just like, oh, I'm going to race you because you're next to me. All right, Justin, you heard all the plot holes in questions. Which movie had more? Fast and the Furious has built their entire career off of plot holes, though Fast and the Furious has to have more plot holes here.
00:55:26
Speaker
um I'm not upset about it. I love it. It doesn't ruin anything, you know, and that's great. So we are two to two heading into round five, our miscellaneous question of the week. Justin, Alex and I will not be saying anything about this question. This is solely on you to decide. After watching these movies, were you more drawn to quit your job and become a surfer or a street racer?
00:55:48
Speaker
street racer 100%. At no point in time did anything about Fast and Furious encourage me to believe that I couldn't be a street racer and watching Keanu Reeves get both verbally lambasted and physically blasted by the waves. I don't want to be a surfer.

Street Racer vs. Surfer: Guest's Choice

Fast and the Furious takes a three to two lead heading into round six. Better trivia.

So the beach spot where they play that infamous football game is the same spot that they use for the soccer game in The Karate Kid. Where Daniel LaRusso gets beat up for the first time by Johnny Lawrence. The street where Vin Diesel crashes his car at the end of the film is the same location as the first narcotics bust in Training Day, which, as mentioned, was also written by David Ayer. Elizabeth Berkley, a.k.a. Jesse Spano from Saved by the Bell, had a small scene in the movie, but it was kind of... That's sad.
00:56:41

So the director's original casting choices for the stars of The Fast and the Furious were Mario Lopez as Dom Toretto, Mark Paul Gosselaar as Brian, and Dustin Diamond, aka Screech, as Jesse. This would have been somewhat of a saved by the bell reunion, except the studio execs shot it down. Let's go, Race Prippy. Justin, which trivia is better? It's a hard one. I have a bonus trivia. Parks and Rec, which is one of my favorite shows of all time, Tom Haverford, actually references Point Break. So in one episode, he's given hypothetical three wishes. Anyway, his second wish is that they remake Point Break and that he gets to play both parts, Swayze and Keanu, which is

amazing. What a great wish. I forgot about Tom wanting to play both parts. Also, Point Break did have a remake and I refused to watch it, but I'm sure Tom playing both parts would have been better than what that remake gave us. That's fair. So I would say after all of the trivia, that extra, I think that Point Break wins this one. All right. That takes us into round seven. We're tied up three to three. Better story, better script, more fun.
00:57:50
Speaker
It is kind of hard to say which script is better when essentially the Fast and the Furious was stolen directly from Point Break. It's more like, which one do you think did it better? I don't know, Justin. It's up to you, man. Which movie wins this showdown? The original came first. If you go purely off of the end of each movie, That scene where Johnny Utah throws his badge into the ocean after saying, Vaya con Dios, and he's not coming back. There's three or four different levers you could activate for multiple scenes from that. I don't think you can argue that better story, better script, more fun at the end of that movie when it came out has to be point break.
00:58:29
Speaker
I don't like losing, but I don't really think I can disagree with that point at all. Well, it's almost like you won because it's the same movie. So that is true. So Point Break wins this matchup of two movies with basically the exact same plot. So Alex, what do you rank in Point Break and Fast One?
00:58:46
Speaker
Uh, this is pretty tight. I'm gonna go point break 84 fast and furious 82. I am going point break 91, the fast and the furious 84. I would go point break 92 fast and the furious 87. Well, Justin, this was fun. Thank you for hopping on the show. Once again, everyone, if you're feeling charitable, Thompson, CFF dot org help out some kids in need. This has been the movie showdown with rock and rob. Make sure to like, subscribe, rate, and review all that fun stuff. And follow us on all the socials at Rock and Rob Show. Until next time, peace. I'm out of here. Vaya con Dios. You gotta say something. I have to say something on this? I am an FBI agent. ah Perfect.
