movies. And we're here now. Well before we get into the episode, let's jump into a five star review. This is from CMacAttack03. I like that name.

High School Anecdotes and Humor

00:01:14
Speaker
Huge fan. um I've got a rock question of the week. What's your wildest high school party story? Well, this may come as a big surprise to you, Rob, but I was not a big partier in high school. I had friends that were, and I would go to some, just to hang out with people. It was always pretty tame. I wasn't a massive partier in high school either. I have a few stories that I'm not willing to share on a family podcast. Fair enough. I do have something. When I was a sophomore, I went to the sophomore dance with a senior.
00:01:44
Speaker
I was not partaking in any alcohol. I was a sophomore. I was a rule follower. But this person, great girl. I guess I shouldn't say great. I have no idea what she's doing with her life now. I don't think she's in prison. um Very nice girl. She wanted to have a lot of fun that night. And so throughout the dance and at the after party, she was feeling herself. Her mom comes to pick us up. And as she's driving, this girl pukes. Oh. all over the car and her mom was so mad and disappointed. And I just remember sitting there and being like, Oh, I don't want her to think that I was drinking

00:02:17
Speaker
too. So I was trying to play it so sober, like overly sober. I was sober, but I was trying to act even more sober. You probably sounded drunk then. Yes. Absolutely. All I remember then is the mom must have had like a Christian music station playing because after this girl finishes throwing up, it's like dead silent in the car and then on the radio. I can only imagine but perfect whatever that Christian song is. We get to my house. ah Thank you for the ride.
00:02:47
Speaker
I don't know if that's my craziest story, but that's one that stands out to me. That's a memorable one, for sure. I like that one.

Exploration of 'Superbad'

00:02:53
Speaker
Well, all right, Rock, we have gotten requests for a lot of movies. One that has kept coming up is the extremely popular Judd Apatow-produced high school comedy Superbad. So this week we decided to grant the wishes of those requests and match up super bad with another Jonah Hill movie, 21 Jump Street. Alex, tell me about what movie you're repping this week. This week, I will be representing super bad quick summary, two very sexually charged, vulgar best friends that are not cool. Make a plan to get some girls drunk at a party in order to lose their virginity. And wow, as I am saying that out loud, this sounds terrible. All right, let's try again.
00:03:31
Speaker
Two high school best friends try to get alcohol for a party of underage kids so these girls will think that they're cool and get with them so they have sexual experience before college. Uh, just as bad on that one, um, alright, one last try. Two best friends discover the meaning of true friendship after a wild night. That's all one get bled on and the other get puked on. And you know what, Rob, I give up. Just watch the movie. Just watch the movie. That's all I'm gonna say.
00:03:55
Speaker
Superbad came out August 17th, 2007. It was directed by Greg Matola, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were actually childhood best friends that started working on this script when they were 13 years old after watching a really bad movie and saying, hey, we can make a better movie than this. It's loosely based on their life and people that they know. Early drafts of the script were read during Apatow's series, Undeclared, but while they were funny, it took many years of rewrites to add heart to the humor. By the time the movie was ready to be made, Rogan was too old to play himself, which led to the role being recast. ah Rob, do you know that we watched this movie together for the first time? Do you remember that? Uh, vaguely. In college, I remember this so clearly for some reason. In our hall, you know how we lived kind of like at the end of the hall? Yeah. I remember someone at the other end got super bad as a DVD. This was pre-streaming. Superbad obviously had massive buzz. So if you didn't see it in theaters, you had to wait till it came out on DVD. I remember every night it got passed down to the next room, to the next room, and then finally got to our room. We watched it together. This might be the first movie that the first time we saw it was together. We started rooming together in August of 2007. Yeah, so it would have been like our first... Yeah, it was like our first year living together. Look at that. Bonded over super bad. Yeah, that's cool. Super bad out of a budget, between $17.5 and $20 million. dollars Box office brought in $170.8 million. dollars We have a rotten tomato score of 88% and a Google audience score of 88%. Whoa, that's a bingo. Might be our first bingo. That's what we're going to call that from now on. That's good. That's a high Rotten Tomatoes score for a raunchy

Exploration of '21 Jump Street'

00:05:28
Speaker
high school comedy. I was very surprised. Well, this week I will be representing 21 Jump Street. Here's the summary. Two young looking police officers that become best friends are sent undercover to infiltrate the dealers and find the supplier at a local high school. And yes.
00:05:42
Speaker
If you're thinking that sounds a lot like an old TV show, you would be right. And if you're thinking, wow, that sounds a lot like the plot of Never Been Kissed only with, you know, drugs and stuff, then can we be friends? Released on March 16th, 2012, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Those names are familiar to you. They did Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and also the Lego movie.
00:06:04
Speaker
They went from cloudy with a chance of meatballs straight to this movie. Quite the leap. An interesting thing about those two directors, they were initially hired to do the Han Solo movie, the prequel Solo, and they filmed and worked on three quarters of it and then got fired because the studio thought they were trying to make it too funny. And then they brought him Ron Howard to finish it. Solo wasn't a great, I mean, it wasn't a bad movie, but it wasn't a great movie. I would love to see what their version would have looked like. Totally, yeah. Their tone is not Star Wars tone. No. Like I understand the thought of whatever, but why hire them then? Yeah. How did they get the job in the first place? That'd be interesting to know. 21 Jump Street was written by Michael Bacall and Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg actually did an uncredited rewrite. So in little connection right there. And yes, 21 Jump Street is based on the TV show from 1987 to 1990 that ran for five seasons.
00:06:58
Speaker
We've got another budget range here of 42 to 54.7 million dollars and a box office of 201.6 million dollars. Rotten Tomatoes score of 85% and a Google audience score of 81%. 21 Jump Street led to the sequel, 22 Jump Street, and for a while they were talks of doing a sequel crossover with the Men in Black franchise. They were going to call it Men in Black 23, didn't end up working out. And they keep trying different variations of a female-led version. And that's something that's still in production. All right, Alex, here's the big question. Why showdown these two movies? So the premise of Superbad is very similar to a lot of other movies. Project X, Good Boys, Booksmart, all great movies in their own right. You and I went back and forth, we really considered super bad verse American Pie. American Pie was the high school friends sex comedy for the late 90s, early 2000s, kind of when like you and I started watching movies like this. So it definitely holds a special place in my heart, I think for you as well. And I think you and I are at the perfect age where we fall right between the American Pie and Superbad generations like perfectly. American Pie was how I thought high school was gonna be and Superbad was a reflection back on high school. So then why choose to match up Superbad and 21 Jump Street when everything seemed to be pointing to American Pie? So here's the obvious connections. Both movies have Jonah Hill, both movies have Dave Franco, both movies focus heavily on a friendship between the two main characters and both movies spend a lot of time in the high school realm with characters trying to fit in or be cool. Both movies are also the two Jonah Hill movies that featured breakout roles for future Best Actress Oscar winners Emma Stone who would win an Oscar for La La Land and Brie Larson who would win one for a Room. But on a deeper level, I felt the tone and spirit of Superbad was closer to 21 Jump Street than American Pie. For as much as I love American Pie, it's definitely of a certain time and it feels that way when you're watching it. Superbad feels like it could have taken place anytime from the 90s to now. And while the high school vibe depicted in 21 Jump Street feels more modern, the tone of the characters fits closer to Superbad.

Jonah Hill Movie Rankings

00:09:18
Speaker
So that's kind of what led to the decision to pair up these two movies. All right, let's do our best friends challenge. I want to do Jonah Hill movies. So top five Jonah Hill movies. If we match up three or more in the same spot, we win. We're best friends. Been a while since we were best friends. I know. I i miss you. It's okay. Boop, boop.
00:09:40
Speaker
All right, Alex, start us off. So for number five, I have The Wolf of Wall Street. Great movie. My number five is Superbad. All right. Number four, I have Grandma's Boy. Call back to an earlier episode that we did. Go check it out. My number four is Wolf of Wall Street. Really good Jonah Hill performance. A little different performance, you know. All right. Number three, I have 21 Jump Street. Number three, I also have 21 Jump Street. Okay. In my opinion, this is the funniest Jonah Hill performance. Agreed. Number two, I have Accepted.
00:10:08
Speaker
Wow, number two. It's not the greatest movie, but I enjoy it so much. My number two is Forgetting Sarah Marshall, one of my favorite movies. Jonah Hill doesn't have a big part in it, but he makes the most of the lines that he has. All right, what's your number one? um My number one is Moneyball. My number one is also Moneyball. Again, he's not your typical Jonah Hill character, but he's excellent. It's a great movie. Once again, we are not best friends. We're close. We're getting there.

Cast and Character Dynamics Discussion

00:10:34
Speaker
Well, let's jump into it. Round one, best cast.
00:10:38
Speaker
All right, well, one of our leading men is Jonah Hill. He plays Seth. I don't find the character of Seth likable at all until like the last like five minutes in the movie, basically from when he blows it at the party until the end of the movie.
00:10:53
Speaker
I'm like, okay, I like this version of him. Yes. But the super try hard, I want to be so cool. But I have literally one of the worst vulgar mouths in movie history. I just find him to kind of be like a little despicable at times, which I think is the point. I think it's the point as well.
00:11:11
Speaker
I find the way he speaks to be so unnecessary. You can be funny without dropping an F bomb every 45 seconds. There's like a level and he just pushed it. And I know it's based off of Seth Rogen and like, yeah, perhaps that is how Seth Rogen was in high school. I have no idea. It's just not my type of humor. And he drives so much of this movie.
00:11:32
Speaker
Now, he has some hilarious parts. I'm not discrediting that. It's not a Jonah Hill thing, because his characters in other movies, I like so much. Just even that line where he said he's talking to Jules, he's like, you scratch my back, I scratch yours. And he's like, oh, the funny thing about my back is it's located on my cock. Nobody would ever say that, especially if you're like not a cool guy trying to impress a girl. like That's not how you would talk. Good start for me here. No, I totally agree. I remember when we first watched this, like that is the part that stood out. It's a lot to listen to. He's a lot to handle, but he's not like this random side character that you're like, Oh, great. Like this guy's in the scene. He's in every scene. Yeah. like Oh boy. ah Buckle up. Anyway, uh, Michael Sarah, he is the other half of our star duo here. He plays Evan. I do really like Michael Sarah in this movie. Michael Cera to me is, he's one of those actors that never seems like he's actually acting. Like he's always kind of that same awkward character that you feel like is just to him. um You think back to like Arrested Development, like same kind of character. Yeah, he's one of those guys that like, if I see he's in something, I'm more likely to watch it. Christopher Mintz Plus, he plays Fogle, AKA McLovin. Oh my gosh. You still see people wearing t-shirts with the fake Hawaii ID. It has transcended time.
00:12:46
Speaker
Is that the most famous thing from this movie? I think it is, personally. The McLovin intro is so good. I actually love the dynamic of Jonah Hill, Seth's character, Evan, and Fogle. Wait, you changed your name to the McLovin? What kind of a stupid name is that, Fogle? What are you trying to be, an Irish R and&B singer? Oh, they let you pick any name you want, but you get down there. And you landed on McLovin. Yeah, I was between that and Muhammad.
00:13:12
Speaker
Why the f**k would it be between that or Muhammad? Why don't you pick a common name like a normal person? Muhammad is the most commonly used name on earth. Read a f**k book for once. Fogel, have you ever actually met anyone named Muhammad? Have you actually ever met anyone named McLovin? Seth's hatred of Fogel. That's so high school realistic. Wasn't there always one of those people in every friends group? Oh, yeah. You always invite them, but you're like, oh, that guy. Why is he here? Jonah Hill did not like Christopher men's plots after their first audition together because he felt like he kept stepping all over his lines. But Rogan said you don't understand how much more that makes us want to cast him. so That checks out to me too. I know that like basically they were having a hard time casting for the part and the casting director just put up flyers in a ton of local high schools and he went and auditioned and like
00:13:59
Speaker
They were like, yeah, this is the guy. All right. We have Emma Stone. She plays Jules. Jennifer Lawrence was considered for this role. I mean, what a get for them. Was this her first movie role? Yeah, this was her first big break. That's a huge get. I mean, she's a phenomenal actress and she's really, really good in this movie. We've mentioned Seth Rogan. He plays Officer Michaels. Yeah. Seth Rogan was starting to get very popular at this point, known for 40 year old Virgin knocked up. He's only two years older than Jonah Hill.
00:14:27
Speaker
Which is funny because they were like, you're too old and you don't look like you could play a high schooler. Right. I mean, but I get it. He was playing adults. It would have been kind of weird to see him go back and try to pull off being a high school kid at that point. Even his voice, you know, his voice a little bit deeper. Yeah. Bill Hader, he plays the other police officer, Officer Slater. So good. He based Officer Slater on a real policeman who arrested him when he was younger. When they are first introduced, their chemistry right away is phenomenal. I love the part where they're looking at the idea and they're like whispering and focus on
00:14:58
Speaker
Shoot like a pie. And he's like, oh, you're an organ donor. And then and then Seth Rogen's like, it's just like a woman. Even after you're dead, they try to rip your heart out. and He's trying to copy it, but he can't like get it right. And then throw in Fogle in the three of them. That storyline is very, very good. I would have watched an entire movie of just those three. One hundred percent. ah Joe LoTrulia may know him as Charles Boyle from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Your favorite. He's of Charles Boyle. I got a question for you. He's not in this movie long. He's the conduit to get Seth and Evan to the grown up adult party. But he hits Seth with his car and he's like begging them not to go tell the police. And he says that he's wanted for a nonviolent crime. A totally nonviolent crime. What do you think it is? Something weird. The only things that went to my mind were things that I don't think we can talk about on this podcast. Like public urination. That's my guess.
00:15:51
Speaker
That is not where I was going with it, because he he makes that phone call at the party. The guy says it's something about his weird friends or yeah whatever, like just bad stuff. Yeah. Well, he's like, I'll do anything. Yeah. Well, and then he's like, you guys on Myspace? I think my favorite line was when he was talking to Michael Cera and he's like, do you guys know a guy named Jimmy? Because you look like his brother and then later at the party, someone makes a reference to is that Jimmy's brother. How much money does he try to give them? Seven bucks. this is It's all I have. Some of the smaller parts, Kevin Corrigan, Dave Franco, David Krumholz from 10 Things I Had About You and the Santa Claus. We're big Krumholz fans on this pod. We're big Krumheads. Martin Starr, he plays a ah random party goer. Danny McBride, also a background character at a party. And Clark Duke, hot tub time machine, briefly in the office.
00:16:38
Speaker
He kept like showing up in every scene at the party. I don't think he ages either because he looks exactly the same now. He does. Good for you, Clark Duke. Also, one a final little fun Easter egg character, Seth Rogen's dad. He is the guy that throws the bat at Jonah Hill after he crashes into the kid's tent. Great accuracy by that dad. It's hard to throw a bat.
00:16:56
Speaker
Yeah, and he nails him. All right, here's the cast for 21 Jump Street. We have Jonah Hill as Morton Schmidt. Why would anybody name their kid Morton? Sorry if your name is Morton out there, but like, ask your parents why. Morton Schmidt, that's just, that's a mouthful. As much as I disliked Hill's character in Superbad, I love his character in 21 Jump Street. We also have Magic Mike himself Channing Tatum as Greg Janko. Tatum apparently passed on the movie twice before Jonah Hill finally convinced him to take it and those two are so good together. I love his hair in the flashback scene. We have Brie Larson as Molly. She's really good too. I mean, just like Emma Stone, she's a very good addition to this movie. Emma Stone was actually considered for this role, but she had to drop out due to scheduling. And they also auditioned Jennifer Lawrence, Juno Temple, Julianne Huff, and Gemma Ward. A lot of good names there. Dave Franco plays Eric. I like Dave Franco. Returning to the show, Rob Riggle, the third movie this season he's been in. He plays Mr. Walters. He's great. We have Ice Cube as Captain Dixon, aka Captain Sassy. He's perfect for this role. He's so funny. I mean, it makes sense because the part was written for Ice Cube. His like intro scene, he's introducing the new drug, HFS. Talking about the kid that OD'd who, by the way, his name is Billium. Billium, yep. Channing Tatum's like, they put this on the internet. And he just says, yeah, teenagers are really stupid. They put everything on the internet, which has gotten worse. It's gotten somehow worse. You're absolutely right.
00:18:30
Speaker
He's talking about their identities they're gonna take. Schmidt, since you were a virgin through high school. says It says that? No, I just assumed it. Due to your many years on the honor roll and your membership to the juggling squad. It's a juggling society, but it's fine, it's fine.
00:18:45
Speaker
They show that in the yearbook photo. It's a picture of Jonah Hill juggling. And under it, it just says, one man, three balls. Oh, man. Office alumni, Ellie Kemper plays Miss Griggs, the teacher who was obsessed with Channing Tatum. Very problematic, but it was very funny.
00:19:03
Speaker
Here's a question. So apparently she does these pop Quiznos where the first person i said it's so serious. So apparently the first person to finish gets a $10 gift card to Quiznos. I would just finish fast. I literally would get it and hand it back in the $10 is worth more than whatever the grade on the quiz. Yeah.
00:19:23
Speaker
I mean, I guess it's an AP class or ah app. as cha and k call it So those kids like care about their grades, but the $10 gift card, that's nothing to scoff at. Are there still quizzes around? I was thinking about this. I loved Quiznos. You know, that's a good question. I have not seen a Quiznos in a long time, but pop Quiznos was hilarious. Ellie Kemper is so good at that, like straight laced, saying something ridiculous, but like very normally, which brings me to our sponsor this week, Quiznos, if you can find one.
00:19:50
Speaker
Go enjoy a tasty sub. All right, Alex, listen to these smaller roles. We've got Chris Parnell from SNL. He's Mr. Gordon. We have Jake Johnson from New Girl as Principal Daddier and Dakota Johnson as one of the female undercover 21 Jump Street officers, Fugazi. We also have Nick Offerman, who you may know as Ron Swanson, as Deputy Chief Hardy. And he has one scene and it is perfect. It is perfect. It's very Ron Swanson-y, but as a police captain. So this is right after they screw up their first arrest, and so he asks Tatum's character what the Miranda rights are. go ahead it's four declamatory sentences followed by a question for a total of fifty seven words okay it's look it obviously starts with you have the right to remain silent i know you've heard this before and and then um i think it sounds something like opportunity well the same yeah yeah oh right Do you have the right to remain an attorney? Did you say that you have the right to be an attorney? You do have the right to be an attorney if you want to.
00:20:53
Speaker
Then he jumps into the mocking, the remake, which is funny because 12 years later and it's just gotten more and more. But he says, fortunately for you to we're reviving a canceled undercover police program from the eighties and revamping it for modern times. You see the guys in charge of this stuff, lack creativity and are completely out of ideas. So all they do now is recycle from the past and expect us all not to notice.
00:21:19
Speaker
Um, which is pretty spot on. Yep. Nailed it. And then ah they ask him, where should we report to? And he says down on jump street, 37 jump street. He's like, no, that doesn't sound right. He's just really, really funny. Apparently JK Simmons was considered for the part, but scheduling conflicts prevented him from being able to do it. And Simmons said this role was one of the few that he would have liked to have played. I like JK Simmons, but you too Nick Offerman perfect. I'm sure he would have played it very well because he's very funny too. But Nick Offerman for me will always take the cake.
00:21:49
Speaker
We also get cameos by OG 21 Jump Street cast members, Edward Scissorhands himself, Johnny Depp. He plays Tom Hanson and Peter D. Luis as Doug Penn Hall. Give me your thoughts. I mean, both of these casts are stacked. They really are, especially with like the cameos or the people with the one scene or the smaller roles. Like I think when you're matching it up, Jonah Hill cancels each other out. Channing Tatum, I give a slight edge to Over Michael Cera. Emma Stone, her and Brie Larson are close, Emma Stone probably takes that one. Then you jump into Ice Cube, Rob Riegel, just the quick scenes of Chris Parnell, Jake Johnson, Dakota Johnson, and then Nick Offerman. As good as like Bill Hader is, and even Seth Rogen as Officer Michaels and Slater, I think those like bottom five, six, seven characters in 21 Jump Street pushes it over.

Iconic Scenes and Cultural Impact

00:22:39
Speaker
This is so tight, but I think you're right. I think there's like slightly more depth of the other characters in 21 Jump Street. I think that puts it over the edge. All right. One nothing 21 Jump Street heading into round two. We're changing this up a little bit. We're going with our five favorite moments from the movie.
00:22:56
Speaker
The first moment I want to start with is the home vaccine. The guys are in home at class. Seth's partner isn't there, so he tells the teacher he needs a new partner. It's great, because when he's talking to her, he's cursing, and he has to apologize for all the cursing he's doing. I'm sorry for cursing, but everyone knows this is a joke. When am I going to need to know how to make tiramisu? Yeah.
00:23:13
Speaker
So he gets paired with Jules, so that's Emma Stone. I love how he's like talking about how Home Ec is so dumb. And she's like, well, Jules partner isn't here. You can partner with her. You know, maybe I'll give Home Ec another chance. So he gets partnered with her. We start to to see Seth's inability to kind of be like a smooth operator with the women. Hey, Jules. Your partner didn't come today? It's kind of a personal question. What? Nothing. It's my attempt at humor. It was just...
00:23:37
Speaker
Oh, like coming, in like coming, in coming. Wow, this is a little too far out there. Yeah, with they interested doesn't just a little too far. I love when we pan over and see Evan and his partner, Maroke. He's like tying the apron and like putting the powder on his nose or whatever. I think the entire opening from when Seth picks up Evan to when they come up with the plan to buy alcohol for Jules's party is really good. You got the credits, which is like weird dancing. It's very unique music for and an opening of a high school movie. Right away, we find out what type of person Seth's going to be. That's when he makes the comment to Evan. I'm so jealous. You got to suck on those as a baby. It's so gross, but also kind of funny. They're Panthers. It is pretty good. Fogle shows up in their class and I even love like the teachers like Fogle, get out of here. Everyone hates Fogle. And they're like, don't tell him about the party. But then he mentions that he's getting a fake ID. So then they're like, hey, you should come to this party and you should buy us alcohol. Yeah. The reason Evan wants to go is for a different girl named Becca. Seth does not like Becca. And the reason is, um I would say a very unique reason. Yeah. So it's revealed then that when Seth was younger, he had a very ah interesting hobby. And that was that he just could not stop drawing things. All he did. They have a montage of him doing this, which is pretty vulgar, but pretty hilarious. And just the way he describes. I like how he calls them his illustrations and he'd keep them in his ah in his lunchbox. Obviously, like there's no way these are a secret for anyone because he's trying them he's everywhere. He said that school was where he got most of his work done.
00:25:20
Speaker
I'm very serious. Yeah, someone like knocks it off to his desk and then Becca picks it up and she looks at it and ah I don't know if you want to keep this thing, but it's what he refers to. He was trying a big veiny bathroom.
00:25:35
Speaker
ah So much funnier when you say it than when he said it. Because he just cursed so much. I know. When he says it, I'm like, yeah, whatever. It's funnier, unexpected. It's so funny. So she she picks it up and looks at it and screams. And meanwhile, he starts eating one of the other ones.

Which is so good. they They sent him to the principal and then they try to like do some sort of therapy on him. And then he wasn't allowed to eat any phallic shaped foods. I love he's like, you know how many foods are shaped like dick? The best kinds. He also says 8% of kids draw pictures of dick.
00:26:08
Speaker
who I would love to see where he pulled that statistic from. He did his research. I did read that that scene required enormous legal complications. So every single drawing had to be approved by the studio's legal department and they would get notes back saying like too big or too veiny. And then the shot of the little girl holding the drawing like clearly they couldn't have a little girl holding that drawing. So it's actually the hands of a very tiny adult woman. I'd love to think that someone went to law school and this is where they're approving. Well, that's a little too hairy and that one's a little too erect. little't too viny ah This leads us to Seth meeting up with Jules and saying that we got a fake ID. We're going to get the booze. We're going to bring it to the party, which then Seth has to go tell Evan and Evan is in gym class playing soccer, which I love. Evan getting in the game and he's like, kick the ball to me. The soccer scene is elite. That's the only scene that Dave Franco's in when Seth is talking to Evan. He gets so mad at him for like not playing. Can can you just get out of here and we'll talk about this later? We're down two points. Calm down Greg, it's soccer. It's soccer. Fuck you, man. Hey Greg, why don't you go piss your pants again? That was like eight years ago, ass. People don't forget. People don't forget.
00:27:17
Speaker
Also loved that the gym teacher was like, Seth, get out of here. Like, everyone knows these guys and they're like, not for good reasons. That's the same scene where we got the introduction of DTF. He's talking about the girls getting drunk saying they will be DTF. DTF made famous by Jersey Shore, but they admit that they stole it from this movie. Well, there you go. I do like in that scene when he's like, you know when you hear a girl saying like, oh, I was so faced last night. I shouldn't have that guy. We could be that mistake.
00:27:46
Speaker
who We could be that mistake. What high standards to live up to? My next moment I want to talk about is when they're trying to hatch their plan to get the booze and Seth is going to steal the booze from the grocery store that Fogel works at. This is one of my favorite lines. He walks in, he's kind of like sc scoping off the store and he sees the security guard and he just goes, hope piggy can run. Oh, which is great. He starts daydreaming about potential scenarios. In his head, um it's gonna go well. Even the cashier's gonna high-five him. Things are gonna be great. He's gonna stroll right out. Kinda comes back to, and then he sees the old lady. The next daydream, she drops her purse. She's like, oh, thank you, young man. Can I buy you some booze?
00:28:22
Speaker
I love the line when he's like, enjoy your remaining years. That's such a good line. And then the last one is when the security guard is like, don't even think about it. And then he throws the ball at him, which he catches, throws it back, hits the old lady, glass breaks, and then he gets his throw it with it. Then you see him walking out of the store and he's like, there was a security breach. I couldn't do it. I think it's around the same part when Fogle arrives and he's wearing a vest and they yeah they say, it'll take off your vest. You look like Aladdin. Yes.
00:28:48
Speaker
And then Seth's getting mad at him and he says something about like taking his face off or whatever and pretending to be him. He says, you don't have the technology or the steady hands to pull that off. Love the face off for reference. My next moment I want to talk about is the liquor store scene with Fogle actually getting to use his McLovin ID. Fogle walks in and he is petrified. He sees a sign like no one under 21. He's a mess. So he goes to the back fridge and he plays a ball in a six pack, but he just grabs it wrong and then they all smash and I love that clerk. He's like, did you do that? He's like, no, it was here. So foland he has the list. He's got to get all the booze. He gets up to the counter and he's trying to make small talk to not seem like he's a kid, which obviously just arouses suspicion. So the lady has to see his ID. It checks out, but immediately he gets punched. And the place gets robbed, which is when we meet Bill Hader and Seth Rogen, which during this whole time, Seth and Evan are obviously in the parking lot that they're not gonna go in. So they're trying to like see what's happening, which leads to many other funny parts. So you kind of have this like one scene with two separate things going on, which I think are, to me, it's like one of the strongest stretches of the whole movie.
00:29:52
Speaker
the The guys are talking about how Evan has, ah he bought spermicidal lube. Seth does not approve of this. We throws it, and then Evan's like, you owe me six bucks, because I'm not going all over there and picking it.
00:30:04
Speaker
This movie does a really good job of making them not cool. Very good job. Yeah, it's clever in the way that it utilizes their nerdiness. Another little line I like and this makes sense for when the guys aren't there when the place gets robbed because you would think they're keeping an eye on full place gets robbed and the cops show up. But during this time, they see someone down the street that they know.
00:30:26
Speaker
She had the biggest s*** I've ever seen, I think. Yeah, I heard she got breast reduction surgery. What? Making her smaller? That's like slapping God across the face for giving you a gorgeous gift. She had back problems, man. And it's not just making them smaller. They completely reshape them. They make them more supple and symmetrical.
00:30:41
Speaker
I gotta to catch a glimpse of these warlocks. Let's make a move. And they start sprinting down the street. But when they get back, they see the cops and they're like freaking out that focal got caught because they're questioning him. But really, they're just questioning him because he was a witness. When we get officers Slater and Michaels, they're interviewing Mindy, who's the cashier, and they're trying to get a description.
00:31:00
Speaker
They were like, does he look like you or does he? And she's like, no, he looked like you he looks like kind of looked like Eminem. And so he said, okay, he looked like an Eminem. And he was like, so he was circular. And then he's got his sketch. He's like, no, I'm an amateur. It's like the worst sketch of a perp. You could possibly draw. I love when they ask Vogel his name and he just says McLovin. They're just response to him having one name. And then they're like, how old are you? And he's like, old enough, and old enough for what? Old enough to party.
00:31:30
Speaker
It's revealed later that they know, but it's funny how like they go with it. It's very endearing. We actually get a 21 Jump Street reference in this sequence. That's right. as Seth says something about Jump Street. Yeah, he's like, this plan was screwed from Jump Street or some nice little call in there. The next scene or the next moment, it's simultaneous. So it's the ride along when Fogo goes with the cops and then the. two boys make their way to ah the adult party, we'll say. I love the ride along scene when they they show up at the bar, they respond to a call. They think Fogo's a guy that took him down and really he just was in the wrong place at the right time. And then they're just kind of like hanging out, like shooting the breeze at the bar afterwards, that whole conversation.
00:32:06
Speaker
It's perfect. So funny. So many like little lines too. And Bill Hader's talking about his first wife. On our wedding night, we had a group sex. I wasn't involved in it, but I could hear it through the wall. And then it was exactly 23 months later, they found out that she was an actual whore. We discovered her on the street. I wasn't involved in it, but I could hear it through the wall. Yeah. And then Seth Rogen was like, I was there. It was great. And then, um, when he's talking about his new wife and how, you know, we met her at paintball, Seth Rogen just turns to Fogel and he's like, you'll meet her. Like, well yeah why it's so funny that's so good And they're like obviously hammered and then they have to respond to another call. great I'll take 13 beers into row any thirteen to So at the other party Seth and Evan um arrive and Evan goes to use the phone to call Becca but he gets trapped in that room and the guys come in and start doing coke and they think he's Jimmy's brother because he's the singer and so like sing us a song so that's when he sings ah Rob's new favorite song these eyes.
00:33:02
Speaker
That scene captures the feeling of being an out of place, uncomfortable teenager so well. Yeah, I do really like when he's singing that song and then everyone's like kind of they're like kind of a cappelling it. Yeah, I don't think that's a word, but it's a word they're joining in. And then the one dude does like a line and yeah chimes in. He's like freaking out. He's like, wow, wow.
00:33:23
Speaker
but Perfectly on beat. It's a very funny scene I do like when they escape and then Seth gets hit by the police car this time And so cops jump out and they're like we're gonna arrest these guys Just love when he's makes them get on the ground and he's like hold this hand pretend. He's your little sister this is back government Oh man. And then they do run away. And that's where we get that line when Seth Rogen is running after Michael Saros when he's running, but he's like, he's a freak. He's the fastest skill line. Such a good line. After he pukes everywhere. It's okay. It's only beer. Oh man. Yeah. The last moment I want to talk about is really, it's the final party. You got a lot of really funny parts. Evan's trying to relax himself. So he's drinking some vodka in the bathroom. He just takes one sip.
00:34:06
Speaker
Spits it straight out all in the mirror He actually finally does get drunk and he goes and he talks with Becca and they go up to the room Then Becca's like I flirt with you in math and he's like same Z's same z Is that where same these came from? I was one. It has to be right. It has to be. At least it popularized it. Do you know that they actually got drunk to film that scene? Wow. Pretty funny. There's a lot of funny back and forth there. Be careful because it's a meaningful sweater to me. It's vintage. It's vintage. Then when she's like, I'm, yeah I said that would happen in health when I learned about it. He's so awkward. I've seen this movie a handful of times and every time he turns her down, I'm shocked. I know it's coming and I'm still shocked. I'm just like, would you really? This was like the whole point. Yeah, I agree. How did you feel when Seth's plan backfired? I know you you weren't a big Seth fan. Basically from this point on is when I actually really start to like Seth's character because I'm so happy his plan backfired and that it's like he had all this great expectations of what was going to happen. And it was like, man, if you just would have been yourself, it would have worked. I actually think it's like for as like raunchy and ridiculous as this movie is, the moral of the story is actually really good. Yeah, totally. This is where, like, the moral of American Pie is not very good. Right. Don't record women and put them on the internet. Right. ah right But the moral of Superbad is really good. I just think it was a nice twist to show, like, no, like, everything you did was meaningless because that's not what she was interested in. Exactly. But that line when she says to him, are you crying? And he's like, no, I just have something in both my eyes.
00:35:45
Speaker
That's really good. ah So our favorite policeman come, they break up the party. I assume you all have guns and crack. They kind of bust in on McLovin. hes He made a move, man. he He was in. Quite literally he was in. I felt so bad for McLovin. They make it up to him. They fake arrest him and pull him out and everyone thinks it's so cool. Does that actually make it up to him? I don't know. Like he thinks it's cool. Not where my priorities would have been in that situation. Then the spit kid is there and he spits on the cop.
00:36:12
Speaker
I love that he got nightstick. I'm glad that it came back around to him. I really like the ending of this movie. Basically this whole scene and then Seth carries Evan away. They're going back to Evan's house and Seth says, ah does your mom still have pizza bagels, which is such a relatable, like I love pizza bagels. It's definitely a really good, going back to someone's house, throwing some pizza bagels. And that's when we get the, I love you, I missed you. Boop, boop. A real connection. And he's like, I'm not afraid to say it. I want to go on the roof. Shout out. He's like, do you want to go open my roof?
00:36:47
Speaker
This is kind of like the heart of the movie. And then and simultaneously, Fogle is with the police and they're shooting guns and doing donuts and whatever. I do love how they hear cops' irons. And they're like, it's the police, we gotta rest.
00:37:02
Speaker
I did enjoy the ending, you know, how that scene where it wraps up. I mean, it's the whole point, like these two guys and friends forever, they're going their separate ways and you know what? They're best friends. All right. Let me give you my five favorite scenes or moments from 21 Jump Street, basically from the opening to when they fumble their first arrest is elite. So it opens in 2005. We got the real Slim Shady song play, which just brought me right back. Loved when I heard that. We see Jonah Hill's characters kind of dressed like Eminem with the bleached hair and stuff. We all know somebody that dressed like that in high school. Oh, yeah. Channing Tatum calls him not so slim shady, which is a very mean burn, but also really funny. And so he was starting to ask this girl to prom and Channing Tatum just starts laughing. And he's like, there's not a nice way to put it. You're a nerd. And, you know, I don't know. She's hot.
00:37:53
Speaker
Sums up Jonah Hill's high school career right there. um Then we find out Channing Tatum. He was not an intelligent person. He was told he wasn't allowed to go to prom because he had bad grades. i I don't know if that's actually a punishment that bad grades would get you, but maybe that's a big one. Channing's mad kicks the trash can. Jonah Hill's character sees him do it and he goes and kicks the trash can and then hurts his foot with his jinko jeans, his janko jeans. Yes.
00:38:18
Speaker
So then it jumps into them at the police academy. You're really good at this. Hey, want to be friends? It's a good montage of them going through it, and then they're graduating, and they say, get ready for a lifetime of being badass. Cuts right to them riding bikes just in a park. They're bike cops. like I thought there'd be more car chases and explosions. They're like helping people get like frisbees and stuff. Gets real mad. Throws the frisbee back into the lake. You can get your own frisbee.
00:38:44
Speaker
So then they try to arrest the one percenters, which is like the big gang in the movie. And that's when they're like trying to intimidate them and they're like, he'll beat your golf. a gi sweat Jonah gets run over by a dude, but they get one of them and then they're just like shooting their guns in the air. They're doing the most unpoliced things that you could ever possibly do. Channing Tatum doesn't know the Miranda rights, which is how they get away. And that's also when he says Shaka Khan, which I have no idea why he says it, but I love it. But it's hilarious. Next favorite is basically their first day of school. That's when they have their two strap versus one strap backpack conversation. Channing Tatum gives the three keys to coolness and then proceeds to list five things.
00:39:29
Speaker
Which are, don't try hard at anything, make fun of people who do try, be handsome, if anyone steps at you, punch them directly in the face, and ah drive a kick-ass car. So they show up to school, we see the new clicks, we see how high school has changed since them and you and I have been there. But I also love that we now have another click scene. This is not the first click scene we've had. no But I like how they kinda like make fun of it. He's like naming them all, and he's like, I don't know what those are.
00:39:55
Speaker
It's good. So they go up to the cool kid crew and he just punches that kid in the face because he technically stepped at him. You punched me because I'm gay? What? No. That's not cool, man. That is really insensitive. I didn't punch him because he's gay. I punched him and then he's happened to turn out to be gay afterwards. I was gay when you punched me. In a weird way, it might've been homophobic not to punch you just because you were gay. It's really good.
00:40:21
Speaker
When ah Tatum, here's the thing. Each of these characters have two names throughout this movie. Schmidt Janko and then their brother. So I'm just calling him Hill and Tatum through this. That would make it much easier. But so Tatum's in app chemistry and the one kid's like, you look really old. Were you held back or something? And he's like, you look super young. Were you held forward? He's so dumb in this movie that it's so funny. He plays it so well.
00:40:43
Speaker
leads into the narc conversation with Eric. They get the phone number to buy the HFS drug. So they go, they see it's Eric that's selling it. And Eric's like, are you a narc? They say like, no, what like are you a narc? And he's like, only narcs would ask people if they're a narc. Jonah Hill just says, your argument kind of just collapsed on itself right there. But that's when they take the drugs. And it goes into the really funny scene of when they go into the bathroom and they're trying to like make each other throw up. And so they keep sticking their fingers in the mouth. Then just like it ends when they can't do it. And they're like, is it me? I'm sorry. Sometimes I just can't cut your fingernails. But them tripping when the drugs finally kick in is so funny. We've got the conversation with Rob Riggle. Don't blow on me, son. I don't like that. Put your tongue back in your mouth.
00:41:33
Speaker
tongue in your mouth and close it. What are you doing? Stop it. Actually, that's not bad. That was one of the funniest scenes in any movie that I can remember. It's really good. From their perspective, what they're seeing and hearing and I like how they kept doing the um phases. They they kept would be like phase one of like what the drug will do to you. Like that was a nice like bit they did during the movie. Hill overly confident singing of Peter Pan. Yep.
00:42:00
Speaker
Not very good, but like everyone was very impressed. Yeah, his confidence was off the chart. Then Tatum goes into the app chemistry. He's like doing the like board writing and then it shows you what he's writing and it's just all fours like the number four. And the words he's saying is he throws in flux capacitor and radioactive spider and then just leaves and everyone's like, what?
00:42:20
Speaker
Then one of my favorite things is Rob Riggle tells Jonah Hill's character because he's apparently some like track superstar because the two brothers get their identities mixed up, which happens earlier. So the reason Tatum's in app chemistry is because it's supposed to be Jonah Hill, the smart one, vice versa. Rob Riggle tells Jonah Hill he has to run on the track team and he's tripping high on drugs when they're at the track meet. And so before the the meat starts, he's like doing this weird dance and then he's using the baton as a wiener.
00:42:51
Speaker
And as they're running, he's knocking the batons out of everyone else's hand that you couldn't have picked a better sport to show somebody tripping. Then he throws it too. Yes. And then that scene closes with Eric and his crew brought Jonah Hill and saying it was so cool that he acted that way because organized sports are so fascist. Right. And Tatum's just like, I don't get this school.
00:43:17
Speaker
Another moment, we got a party scene. Not as good as the party scene is super bad, but still really good. They're getting alcohol, drugs for the party, whatever. I do like when they just take the marijuana, but they look at, was it Coke? They're like, we're trying to show them a good time, not ruin their life. I do love how, um, like ice cubes characters always tells them, don't do this. And then they just immediately do that thing. Everything that he tells them not to do, they do. Like immediately too. I do have a question. So they opened the door and there's like a weird three way going on. It's like a girl with a guy behind her and then a girl behind the guy. Yeah. And someone says when they see like, what's the girl do like, what was the girl in the back doing? Couldn't tell you. So then someone from like a rival school shows up. This is when we get the big fight scene. Jonah Hill steps in to ah keep him away from Eric and he's just like, take five, take five. I got this. Channing Tatum is just dominating the fight. Jonah Hill's barely managing. But then the fight ends. Everyone cheers. They turn around and they're like, oh, you got stabbed. He's like, when did I get stabbed?
00:44:18
Speaker
It's like just like protruding out of his back. Yeah. Parents show up as Jonah Hill's running away. Mom, you're embarrassing me in front of my friends. Then we've got the car chase scene. Tatum hitting the golf balls with the tennis racket out of the car that day, commandeer. He has deadly accuracy, but it's really funny because there's the two situations that happen where they think something's going to blow up because it's like fuel. Yeah. It doesn't blow up. They're just like, Oh,
00:44:43
Speaker
I you have really thought that would have blown up. The way they film it is so good, too, because it's like it's got the music. They zoom in and then it's like silence and they're like, oh, that's it. And then finally, like something happens with a chicken truck and that just explodes out of nowhere. Feathers everywhere.
00:44:58
Speaker
Question about that car chase. So they're in cars and the people chasing them are on motorcycles. Wouldn't you just ram the motorcycles with the cars? Sure, knock them right over. I feel like you win that. Last scene I want to talk about basically the ending from when they finally get to go to prom because if you remember, neither of them went to their prom. So they finally go to prom. They open the limo door, all the doves fly out. There's the big meetup between the one percenters, Eric and Rob Riggle's character, and they're going to start making their deals to make this drug go mainstream. And the leader of the one percenter, he's like, I don't like strangers. Then Eric's like, I expect to make any new friends with that attitude. Yeah, everyone's a stranger. So then it's revealed Tatum and Hill are undercover cops and Eric's like, you made me this friendship bracelet. hello Eric's like so stupid, but it's he's like really funny. So then there's an ending chase where they're in a limo and there's that drunk girl who keeps trying to give Channing ah a blowjay. but Which we didn't talk about in the super bad section, but it is funny how she's like blowjay.
00:45:57
Speaker
So then Channing proves that he learned something, makes a covalent bond, throws it, blows it up, and he's just like, app chemistry bitch. Redemption. Ends with Rob Riegel's character getting his wiener shot off, and the real Miranda writes, Hill and Tatum, say them together to him. And then Jonah Hill kisses the girl, which is still kind of weird because she's in high school. I was hoping that wouldn't happen. Yeah. But she does make a point to say she's 18. She does. Here's my thoughts. I don't want to dwell too long on this. I think there's really, really funny parts in 21 Jump Street, but I think there's way more memorable, iconic parts in Superbad. The scene with them tripping and talking to Rob Riggle, I laughed at that more than anything combined in both. But from Superbad, I think we determined that there's stuff either that was coined. There's definitely stuff that's like, did that come from this movie? Like it's definitely held up like some of the quotes and references and the scenes. You said it, the fact that there's T-shirts with McLovin's ID on it. There's just a lot of things that have kind of transcended culture. And 21 Jump Street is still a fairly new movie in terms of standard, but I don't see it having scenes that carry through the way that Superbad does. Yeah, totally. Like break into the cultural lexicon. Agreed. All right. So we're going to get off to Superbad. So we are

Soundtracks and Plot Analysis

tied one to one, heading into round three, better title or soundtrack.
00:47:19
Speaker
There's a lot of funk in Superbad. A lot of funk. And even like the name to me and the opening titles, it's like very like retro. Yeah. I don't know why, because the movie's current day when it was made. It's just an interesting choice. I mean, these eyes, we've talked about that many times so far. It also plays in the cop's car. Later, make the real version. I read that they did a cut of that scene where instead of singing these eyes, Evan sung the thong song. I want to see that. I do too. I wish that was like a deleted scene we could see.
00:47:47
Speaker
um We also got Stranglehold by Ted Nugent, Ace of Spades by Motorhead, Panama by Van Halen. Apparently, Bill Hader just ad-libbed that when he was doing the donuts. He just started singing it, and they liked it. So they're like, yeah, we want to do this. But the rights to use Panama was so expensive. Director Greg Matola said that it cost almost as much as all the songs in the movie Adventureland, which Matola also directed, which had a ton of, like, 80 songs in it, so not cheap songs.
00:48:15
Speaker
That's so funny. Big Papa by the Notorious B.I.G. Here's a fun little fact. Eminem said that Superbad is his favorite movie of all time. He references it in two of his songs, Brainless and Ballin' Uncontrollably. I wonder if that led to a little bit of the Jonah Hill, Not So Slim Shady, and 21 Jump Street. I would like to think that. um And then the end credits, there's a song called F. McLovin. Nice. It's pretty funny. There's a song about McLovin.
00:48:41
Speaker
What about the title Superbad? Where's that come from? The title Superbad, Seth Rogen confirmed. This is confirmed August 17th, 2017. He tweeted, my good friend, Dave Krumholz, friend of the pod, came up with the title Superbad while we were smoking weed at the Oakwood. And the Oakwood was i an apartment complex um in California where actually a lot of the stars lived kind of before they got famous. So I like the title. It's like fun to say. I don't think it fits at all. Like it doesn't make any sense, but I don't know what you would title that movie. No. So for 21 Jump Street, I think the score is decent. It does have a score. It's got like a theme that goes through. We mentioned Real Slim Shady by Eminem. We've got Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO. That was such a thing during this time. Forgot about that. Huge song.
00:49:26
Speaker
They do play Straight Outta Compton by NWA, which Ice Cube was a member of. And in the prom scene, they're like showing pictures of the year, and they're playing the Graduation song, which is that song that's like Friends Forever by Vitamin C. Yep. I mean, that song has been popular for settings like that for a long time. And then 21 Jump Street, it's just the same title, that TV show. Yes. They don't actually say 21 Jump Street in the movie, but they show 21 Jump Street. Yes.
00:49:56
Speaker
For this one, it's close. As much as I love Crumbholts, I still don't completely understand the title super bad. And you said it, there's a lot of funk. It's a lot of funk. In this movie, which if I'm being honest, takes me out of this feeling like a high school movie at times. When you consider some of the other movies that we've done with high school aged characters or scenes or whatever, they use like popular songs from that time. It might work in their favor. You know how I'd said it does feel like it could take place in the 90s, the 2000s or now. yeah And the fact that it doesn't rely on the music from that time probably helps with that. But I kind of wish they relied on music from that time because once again, this is supposed to take place when you and I were in high school. I would love to hear some of like the popular songs from that time. the same I don't know. These are really close. Flip a coin. I love the use of Real Slim Shady and Party Rock Anthem. And, uh, the fact that we've got one of Ice Cube's actual songs in it. So I think I want to give this 21 Jump Street. I think I would go same answer, same reasons. Okay. Two to one for 21 Jump Street, heading into round four. Plot holes, cringiness, random questions.

So here's some plot holes for Superman. So Seth says that him and Evan were friends since they went to elementary school together, but Evan didn't know all about that drawing stuff. I just feel like that's not something he would have been able to hide if they were as close as they say they were. Yeah, right. Not necessarily a plot hole, but just kind of convenient. So Seth pours out laundry detergent and fills it up with beer and then brings it to the party and people drink out of it.
00:51:33
Speaker
How sick would all of those kids that drank out of that got? The whole time I was thinking. There's no way he got all the laundry detergent out of that. That's like thick, sticky, goopy. And he was in a rush. And he even said like, oh, green beer. Yeah. I was like, nope, not drinking that. Those kids would be very sick. If Evan could drive, as they say he did, he drove them to the mall in that last scene. Why were they taking the bus everywhere? No, that's a good point.
00:51:58
Speaker
Like I understand being like, well, I don't want to drink and drive, but just leave your car at the party. They had so many issues being like, we got to get on this bus to go here. Like just drive your car. Yeah, they could have saved a lot of time. Cringiness. Um, this movie is filled with cringiness. That was pretty common for the time period. I'm not sure if it's intentional or not. I think some of it is intentional. I mean, just a ton of language that you just don't hear anymore. So I don't know. I'm just like.
00:52:22
Speaker
It is what it is. It's a raunchy comedy from this time period filled with a lot of things that you wouldn't hear now. Right. Random questions. So the period dance. Seth dances with a woman. She, uh, whatever on him.
00:52:36
Speaker
I don't have a question other than why the heck is this in this movie? I don't know. I feel like this either works for you or it doesn't. And this doesn't work for me. No. Now, I'm sure there are people that find this funny and are like, you're an idiot. That's like the funniest scene. And like, that's cool. Different tastes. And that's awesome. But for me personally, could have done without it.
00:52:55
Speaker
Well, you know that when they were first writing this, when they were teenagers, they're probably like, Oh, it wouldn't be funny if this happened. And then they just, well, I think it's actually based off something that did happen, which is fine. I'm not checking the credulity of it, but I just don't like it. No, I get you. So, uh, what is a male camel toe called? Is it a camel tail? Cause I kind of like it.
00:53:14
Speaker
I had never heard that term, but it made me laugh. And I was like, yeah, that makes sense. All right. What do you got? Plot holes for 21 Jump Street. Okay. In no world Channing Tatum is ever not considered cool. No, I don't care how dumb he is. I don't care what it is. Like there's no world where he's just a straight loser going back to school. What time does

Humor and Trivia Highlights

their school start? Because on the first day of school, they wake up to the dad on the elliptical machine. They get the new car and they practice jumping over it. What time will that be on?
00:53:42
Speaker
That's like a multi hour morning before school starts. Also, like, I can't imagine that they just be able to get a car before like 8 a.m. with no red tape. Yeah, absolutely not. ah Cringy. I mean, really, the only things that are cringy are the things that are supposed to be. Yeah, the movie kind of intentionally makes fun of that stuff. Like it's aware like this was kind of where things were changing. So the cringy things that happened in the movie are played in ways that are and it's intentional. Yeah. You think this is five years after super bad. Yeah. A lot of things, you know, they're shifting. All right. Just some random questions. There's 30 days left of school. There's no way they're joining a track team based on timing and and rules surrounding competition, having to practice a certain amount of days. As somebody that coaches at the high school level, currently you can't start school and then be like, Hey, I'm going to compete in the varsity track meet today. Yeah. Today. When the parents come back to the party hours later, because the mom left her phone, how did it take so long for her to realize that? Yeah, I don't know. That was weird. And at that point, why not just leave it? They were gone for hours already. ah Jonah Hill's character definitely got too much into high school. Yeah, he was playing this character. There's no way he would have after like a couple of weeks been like, I'm applying to college. You know, Eric's going to Berkeley. It was pretty funny. though It's so funny. Totally unrealistic. Like they knew they were cops. Right. um When we see Jonah Hill's childhood house, all the pictures of him on the wall and that one of them, they said he looks like he's Fred Savage from the Wonder Years wearing an Indian friendship bracelet. It really did look like Fred Savage. And I actually Googled, was it Fred Savage? But no, it it really was just Jonah Hill. those That's great. Uh, look, I'll be honest here, Superbad's going to win this round because as much as I want to point some things out about it, there's nothing major. But we have to really suspend belief of reality to think that Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum could have passed as high schoolers in 2012. So we'll give this point to Superbad. I might agree with that one. Two to two, heading into round five. We're just going to point out some of the jokes that we didn't mention and we'll see which ones we like more.
00:55:46
Speaker
So which jokes didn't we mention for super bad? These are just like random, maybe some one liners or just scenes that weren't really part of the memorable moment. So I absolutely love this line. Bill Hader, and he's driving the cruiser. He mentions Yoda and he says, Oh, Yoda, he's from attack of the clones.
00:56:03
Speaker
If you are mentioning him from any Star Wars movie, that was probably the absolute last thing, yeah which makes it very funny, of course. I think that's just a really good deep cut. Like younger people watching this movie wouldn't understand that. But for anyone like our age or older, we get it. Um, Seth Rogan thinking that there would be semen on everything. When he's explaining, that's really funny. So funny. Back to that scene where they take that call and they go to the bar and they they have a drink with Fogle. They're talking about how you don't want to meet chicks at a bar because Bill Hader's character met his first wife at a bar at that exact bar that they were at. You got to go to other places. You got to go to spin class, a farmer's market, pumpkin patch, given the time of year.
00:56:43
Speaker
I love that. That is so good. um Yeah. So after they hit Jonah Hill and they're like trying to figure out what to do and he's like, I can't believe this is happening again. What are the odds? They're so good. And then he's just like, yeah, I'm not going to bail you out of this one. Referencing that something similar has happened before. ah The ones that I got the prayer to Korean Jesus and then Jonah Hill just says like the end. And he's like, I don't know how to end a prayer. And the Channing Tatans behind him just laughing so hard when they go to Jonah Hill's parents' house for the first time. And there's dads just like, this guy was always a great tryer. Then when they make like the yarn, work, murder, board type thing, and they're trying to explain it to Ice Cube, and there's just a question mark on the guy's face. And he's like, we we need to know who the supplier is. And he's like, well, yes, that's this this guy. We don't know. And Ice Cube asked them if they're autistic. And Jonah Hill says, yes, we are artistic.
00:57:35
Speaker
Yeah, he mishears and he thinks, yeah, well, yeah, of course we're artistic. And then I just got to point out the scene where Jonah Hill's with Eric and they're like shoe shopping and that annoying neighbor is like about to blow his cover. Oh, gosh, yeah. And he throws her into the shoes and then says that. He's trying to grab my shoes, like, oh, my God, I have arthritis. It hurts my hand. I need to grab a handful of that.
00:57:57
Speaker
and I love that they believe him too. They're like, what? ah I can't really go against Bill Hader. I know. They have so many good parts and so many good lines. Pretty much everything they say is funny. There's a lot of really, really funny parts in 21 Jump Street, including these. But I could legitimately watch an entire movie of Bill Hader and Seth Rogen as those police officers. Me too. We'll give it to Superbad. So we are three to two heading into round six, better trivia.
00:58:26
Speaker
The DVD Luray menu for Superbad features a silhouette of Evan dancing, which was filmed continuously for an hour with Michael Cera dancing nonstop for the entire time as to give the menu the feeling of not having a looped scene. That's commitment. I think if Michael Cera was a little bit more in his own as an actor, he would have been like, no, I'm not doing that. I'll do five minutes and then you will loop it.

So when Janko and Schmidt are being briefed on the drug HFS, a video sharing site is on the computer. And two of the related videos on the sidebar say that they were uploaded by users Chan Chan and Brie Larr, references to Channing Tatum and Brie Larson. Good screen names.

In Superbad, the F word is used 176 times. The movie itself is only 113 minutes long. So doing some podcast math here that averages to approximately 1.56 uses of this word per minute. 84 of those were said by Jonah Hill alone. Wow. So this is a higher rate than Platoon, Scarface, and Boogie Nights. That's a lot of F bombs. All right, here are all the connections or Easter eggs to the original 21 Jump Street show that are in this movie. So when Schmidt and Janko go undercover as brothers, their last name is McQuaid. In the original, Hanson and Penhall would frequently go undercover as the McQuaid brothers. All the original cast members from 21 Jump Street have cameos in the film, except for Richard Greco and Dustin Noguian. In one scene, though, the bad guys watch the original TV show, and almost every shot shows Noguian's character

in it. Greco and Naguyem would later cameo in 22 Jump Street. Went Dakota Johnson and Rai Rai, that's the other female Jump Street officer, talk about busting a prostitution ring and a chop shop, run out of the high school. Both of those cases were actually plots in season one of the OG show.

Channing Tatum's character is named Janko after Captain Richard Janko, who was played by Frederick Forrest in the original. And in the original, Johnny Depp really wanted a running gag where he would be shown eating peanut butter throughout the series, but his idea was denied. That is why in this movie, his character is seen in every shot eating peanut butter, has a peanut butter tattoo, and is referred to as PB.
01:00:38

And then one image shown before the credits has a man at a typewriter. This is a reference to the famous Stephen Jay Kanell Productions typewriter logo, which was shown at the end of the show. So there you go.
01:00:50
Speaker
Um, trivia is always like, so back and forth. I do like that you did the math for the effort, but I really appreciate all those connections and Easter eggs to the original 21 jump street show totally. And they're not like over the top. I like how some of them are pretty subtle. Cool that they got even like the former cast members to join. That was really fun. Seeing that it was a nice way to honor the original. All right, we'll go 21 jump

street. So we are tied three, two, three, heading into round seven, better story script, more fun.

21 Jump Street, I do feel like embraces the silliness, but in like a serious way, I don't think it treats the audience like we're dumb, and the jokes per minute are so high. Super bad, I think does a better job with the friendship aspect than 21 Jump Street. And I think that it's a little bit of a cleaner, more well-written script, and the whole movie is set over one day, but you see a lot of growth from these two characters. You know, it's also just a really weirdly good depiction of high school. And I think that's why it does stand the test of time. And I think people like this movie a lot because I think almost everybody has had that feeling of not being cool enough in high school. And whether it was displayed in this way or displayed in another way, you understand what those two characters are feeling and going through. And then realizing at the end that like, look, we don't have to be the coolest people for just ourselves and we have each other. Like that's enough. I love the fact that it's like basically 24 hours. I think it's pretty conceptual, but really cool how they pulled that off with it still feeling realistic. Like we've done some movies where they depict high school and a lot of times we're like. that never happened, that never happened. This definitely feels the most authentic to the experience. Yeah. Just like in that last scene too, like you just kind of get that feeling of like high school's ending, me and my best friend are going our separate ways. I you know i remember feeling that with all my friends who are going here, there, everywhere. And it's like, man, it Kind of brings it back. I personally like 21 Jump Street more, but I respect what Superbad does and understand that I think they do it at probably a slightly better level, if that makes sense. And I do feel like in 20 years from now, Superbad will stand the test of time. I don't know if 21 Jump Street, I mean, I think people would still watch it and like it, but it's not going to have carrying power. That's Superbad does.
01:03:13
Speaker
I think I would agree, too, that 21 Jump Street for me would be the more rewatchable of the two. But doesn't mean I wouldn't rewatch Superbad, but I think you're right that it this will be the one that will stand.
