Red D: Hitting the jingle. Oh, it moved.
Jamie: What? boop Whoop, whoop.
Red D: A little bit of a remix?
Jamie: who
Red D: Yeah, going.
Jamie: Do you want to do vocals? Whoop! Whoop!
Red D: Janie, do you want to eat your Monster Munch? Maybe that would make a good sound effect right now.
Jamie: who Do a crunch -crunch in this medium.
Jen: No, no, no, make it listen.
Jamie: Whoop! Look! Whoop!
Red D: Jenny's like, this jiggles so long, I'm going to wash the cat dishes.
Jamie: whoop Whoop! Whoop!
Jen: This is it. No, I just wanted to get smelly. okay The cat food sticks on the dish and it's awful.
Jamie: This kind of Lucas.
Red D: but
Jamie: organised content that makes us the podcast. for the connoisseur quickly produced endeavors.
Red D: why this podcast is um Intro, single, very loud. But I think when the episode gets mixed it all works out in the end.
Jamie: I thought this was a zero editing production, Red.
Red D: It is. zero episode but the software is so smart that it does the sound mixing automatically but nothing's cut. a Welcome back. While Janie is washing up those cat dishes.
Red D: We are here for. Season three, episode 20. Favorite son. Oh wow. thought track voyage or rewatch podcast i'm already trying to time my speech to end this thing on so okay
Jamie: Yeah, I work pretty hard for that because it doesn't really give you a naturalized
Red D: No, and also I have
Jamie: He's the way out.
Red D: This little soundboard in the app is very cool, but it doesn't tell you how much time it's gonna take or how much time you have left.
Jamie: Hmm.
Jamie: It just tells me I'm speaking, which somehow I can tell without getting the soundboard.
Red D: Yes, it's a bit like all those tracking apps that tell you if you're sleeping well or not well. i'm like Do I need?
Jamie: Weirdly, it didn't tell me that I was speaking as I just spoke there.
Red D: after for That was it!
Jamie: It just sort of flatlined off as the beam at the end of the the life.
Red D: ah
Jamie: Uh,
Red D: Yeah, Jamie, normally you're...
Jen: you could not endure.
Red D: Soundwave is much more volatile. than the rest of ours, but it's a bit quiet.
Jamie: That's just how I roll. Rogue.
Red D: yeah
Jen: guys Do you guys like my background? It's very appropriate.
Red D: ah yes
Jamie: Is that three naked humans? Oh no, sorry. it's it's so It's Captain Sulu, sorry.
Red D: Nice background.
Jamie: Aw, cool.
Red D: On your TV?
Jamie: For the benefit of our viewers, Red, could you describe that background?
Red D: the
Red D: No, I think you should. I'm very bad at describing things.
Jamie: Uh... Jenny has a still of the scene from this episode where Harry Kim is tying up women. No, no, no.
Red D: it No, that's not the still.
Jamie: yeah Oh gosh, my eyes.
Red D: It's just the... what I wonder what the technical term for that is.
Jamie: very beautiful
Red D: the
Jamie: and pornography. at
Jen: that's That's what they show to you know prove I've been watching my episodes.
Red D: no
Jamie: So Jenny has the holding screen from someone who has Star Trek Voyager multiple series on one of their Whip.
Jamie: web web televisual viewing applications. on big screen on the wall.
Jen: Yes.
Red D: Yes. Holding screen, I like that. And that's your Samsung frame, if I'm not...
Jamie: We don't do product placement, but Samsung is.
Red D: Mistaken?
Jamie: and Excellent, Savira. there of televisual products.
Red D: ah Snap.
Jen: It's weird, I've got to say though that that's the still of... me
Red D: It is a very strange choice because why is the guy from Star Trek original in there?
Jen: Exactly! Out of all the characters that could be on it. I think he makes a cameo, possibly, but...
Jamie: He does, yeah.
Red D: He does have a cameo, but
Jamie: and And he makes the entire series.
Red D: Jenny, I have to say I had exactly the same thought. What is this name now? um Of course I'm gonna go.
Jamie: What, that Captain Sulu makes the entire series?
Jen: not I mean, not that I don't love that character. but It's not very representative of the Voyager, is it? the
Red D: Captain Sulu. Yeah.
Jamie: Jenny doesn't like the diversity of the photo.
Red D: The diversity is a diversity from another series.
Jamie: put the with that that
Red D: What are you talking about?
Jen: Considering you know recent events of today, I think, you know, I'm...
Jamie: What?
Jen: I'm very much down with diversity.
Jamie: This is how you do it. I know, it's just quite amusing to sort of pretend to be throwing grenades and saying, why doesn't X like diversity? Or to to quote Brian Blessed her on Have I Got News For You? ah What does he say?
Jamie: Ian doesn't think Osama's done anything wrong, which obviously Ian did think that Osama had done many things wrong, but he was just stirring the pot. In the same way that I was stirring the pot, I of course knew that Jenny...
Jamie: as do we all embrace diversity.
Red D: Um... All Jenny, I think, has muted herself and can't defend herself from that. Compliment or claim?
Jamie: you know bitter tirade of well poisoning i think is a better way of putting it
Red D: Do you want to give us a one minute summary, Jamie?
Jamie: Yes.
Red D: Thank you, go ahead
Jamie: No.
Jamie: because someone is putting a cat on the screen and I'm distracted.
Jen: I was pretty. possible.
Jamie: Okay, I mean, I i'd sort of considered lining things up, I considered witty word plays, I considered many things, and then I realised that...
Jamie: The still for this series is the incorrect historic Star Trek of a figure that it should have been. It is silly. It should, in fact, have been the one, the only Riker.
Jamie: as the biggest player in the Star Trek universe. so I could give you lots of tangential details, but effectively... there is a lot of flimsy plot devices in order to put harry kim on a planet full of scantily clothed women trying to mate to death with him.
Jamie: ah under the slightly fake pretence that he is a long -lost child on their planet, as proved by some slightly dodgy spots ah and a flimsy genetic test which is later proven to be falsified, not unlike the urine tests of certain nations known to be cheating the Olympic programme, invading Ukraine, as we speak. um Moving on from that particular parallel...
Jamie: ah The plot effectively thickens as Mr. Kim, whilst he's considering living on a planet in which he is effectively being offered group sex from the very first night,
Jamie: discovers that the only other male protagonist of that planet who he's been able to come across has on his marriage night effectively been desiccated in a way not dissimilar to a succubus of the night. within the middle ages harry having realized that he does not wish this fate attempts desperately to escape from his captors culminating in a scene in which harry is surrounded by 14 different women with quarter staves a la little john from robin hood trying to knock him out so that because of some
Jamie: flimsy plot device about the fact that they have inadequate amounts of genetic matter all need to mate with him and he's teleported out of trouble by a redoubtable skipper who presumably wants Harry back in spite of in the very first scene his opening fire for no apparent reason on an alien warship as a way of suggesting that he is getting
Jamie: precognitive slash déjà vu skills which are used by his putative uh family species as a way of suggesting that he is in fact one of them because of the inbred genetic coding that they claim to have given him you needless to say this is false and unraveled in a never -ending flurry of threesomevation by ari And indeed. ah
Jamie: frankly, explanations as to why he is or is not genetically part of that species. After the Doctor throwing out countless immeasurable lines along the tune of, ah, another saved from the jaws of death, discovers that he in fact managed to pick this disease up while on an away mission and it was picked up by the teleport.
Jamie: Life is good. Was that meandering and long enough and did I go over that minute? Too many references to group sex.
Red D: Well, I mean, not enough, I think.
Jen: Yeah.
Red D: was excellent Thank you, Jeannie. I see Jenny actually has one cool thing. Oh no, wait.
Jamie: but We're gonna walk past that description straight to one cool thing?
Red D: so
Jamie: Whoa! How did we react to this? Was it just gratuitous?
Red D: No, sorry, I skipped a bit, which is our initial reactions, but...
Jamie: indeed
Jamie: Yeah, dudes
Red D: um Uh...
Jamie: how How did you guys react to Riker Paradise?
Red D: Well. Janie, do you want to kick us off?
Jen: whoa i'm Bye. I don't know if I should because I have written... Underneath your comment on initial reactions, Red, OMB...
Red D: Oh yes, sorry.
Jen: OMG, same!
Red D: That's so funny because my initial reaction then for the listeners was Finally, we got to this episode because for some reason, this episode pops into my head from time to time.
Jamie: yeah
Red D: Have we watched that one where Harry is like...
Jen: Yes.
Red D: on that crazy planet with all the women yet.
Jen: yeah i didn't know why it sticks in because I like as an episode like it's it I quite enjoy it but it's not like you know one of my favorites or particularly sort of dramatic or memorable in any way but it really does just Just stay in the memory for some reason.
Jamie: Hmm. I mean, I see.
Red D: that's
Jamie: I think it's a good -fashioned old traditional fun Star Trek episode. Um... You know, which we haven't had a lot of and it's like It's... fun and it's silly and it's sci -fi and it's not taking itself too seriously thank heavens um you know.
Red D: that's true i mean i haven't watched the full original series but i think if you just you could put
Jamie: We're going to see the full original episode.
Red D: No, no, you could put this episode in that series. You know... and it must give a beat. I mean... i think speaking of sulu who's input like for some reason the star trek voyager poster but uh yeah it is
Jamie: assistance assistance
Red D: Perhaps you're right there, Jamie.
Jamie: this this this this system
Red D: Sorry.
Jen: Mystery.
Red D: that's a mystery It's a mystery why it's stuck in our head, to the Jenny. That is crazy.
Jen: Hmm. And for some reason...
Jamie: I mean, I can think of many reasons it might have stuck in your head if you're a teenage boy like me.
Jen: But we weren't teenage boys.
Jamie: this
Jen: The crazy thing, I...
Jamie: I can tell from your voices.
Jen: Um... Yeah, especially the spots on his... Head. I was... Remember them really well.
Red D: Yeah.
Jen: For some reason.
Red D: It's like epic. okay we are probably gonna i mean i don't want to like get into our discussion but there is something i guess about so Discovering you're not who you think you are, that also is part of, I think, the reason why I remember the episode so well. or why it pops into my head from time to time. Not just all the threesomes, or maybe I'm just a... protesting too much but anyway um jenny You have one cool thing this week. and We don't always have this, so very exciting.
Jen: Yes, and I'm afraid my one cool thing is not about this episode specifically. It's about generally...
Red D: That's fine.
Jen: Oh, it's podcasts.
Jamie: all
Jen: And I thought you guys would love to know about how... Obviously, you know I get some... Flight anxiety these days, my old age and, you know. medicate myself up.
Red D: i'm sorry Yes. But you're not old, but yes.
Jen: but one of
Red D: ah
Jen: oh i Thank you. But one of the things that... is really helping and i did it on my recent flight this weekend is to listen to the podcast
Red D: so fascinating i want you to tell us more and not just just because you're I guess praising our own podcast, but...
Jen: i
Red D: Like, that's so nice to hear.
Jen: I think it's something about hearing uh voices of people you're close to but and this is the key point. not having to interact at all. Because the thing is, I've been on flights with people. I was on a flight with my dad and my dad's partner and Jamie. And, you know, I could.
Jen: just talk to them to try and you know calm my anxiety that doesn't really help at all I've tried that before um but something about just listening to people you know and like
Red D: Yeah.
Jen: Just talk about something else. but you don't have to. uh respond you're just a passive listener i just find really relaxing and calming um And...
Red D: That is so interesting.
Jen: I would also add that i I think, guys, we had a particularly good run. I'm not saying it's over. But... But there were three episodes in a row. And I was actually laughing out loud.
Jen: at um
Red D: oh my gosh that's huge.
Jen: Yeah, yeah. I was like, that is hilarious. um
Red D: Maybe we should package as Apple. bundle them or promote them or something.
Jen: Yeah, I wondered if it was because they were good. Like, to me, they were really good episodes as well. They were some of my favorite.
Red D: and
Jen: Like, one had Q, who we all love.
Red D: oh yes
Jen: And the other one, oh, was that one with B 'Elanna.
Jamie: he
Red D: Oh yes.
Jen: basically uh and she the weapon she developed that was an ai weapon and it was And and she had to battle with it in a battle of the minds.
Red D: Yes.
Red D: gosh that's really putting this episode in a bit of a shade but yes
Jen: Oh no. Yeah. So, yeah, I thought you'd appreciate that. So now...
Red D: I do appreciate that.
Jen: when you see that there's extra listens read. Unfortunately, it is not extra listeners.
Jamie: yeah
Red D: but who we i mean This is an unintended benefit that we created something.
Jen: It's just me.
Jamie: Not hundreds, not hundreds of Jenny lessons though.
Red D: Yeah, about hundreds. um really unintended benefit but you know it does remind me um And shame. I don't know if we were. very sympathetic towards him because he's our brother sometimes you know that's your brother but we had a lot we used to have
Jamie: No one is ever sympathetic to you if you're their brother.
Red D: Yeah, we had a lot of like sibling calls ah for a long time. uh so me my brother and sister and like sometimes my brother just wouldn't say anything or contribute or the chat or whatever and I'm feeling like I mean like...
Red D: Do you have anything to say Oliver? And then you'd be like, oh, I just find it really relaxing listening to you guys.
Jamie: <unk>
Jen: all
Red D: So I think there's, yeah, that maybe there's something in that. um
Jen: Yeah.
Jamie: Shameless sucking up. I mean, yeah, what you said
Red D: Well at the time I was like
Jen: This is...
Red D: we're doing these calls for your benefits okay please contribute something But... Maybe I should have been more sympathetic. but
Jen: it's the sound of familiar voices isn't it i
Red D: Yeah.
Jen: I like him. it to my cat's reaction When Jamie and I start talking. just to each other.
Red D: oh yeah
Jen: Leo starts purring.
Jamie: Yes.
Jen: it's adorable
Red D: That is so sweet.
Jamie: And he is a brother as well, so, you know.
Red D: ah That is so sweet. I mean, yeah, I guess like as a kid or whatever, whatever or you'd like fall asleep or have a nap to the sound of your family. and Yeah.
Jen: Yeah.
Red D: Oh, but I'm so happy that this podcast is helping someone if it's someone that's on the podcast already. oh Thank you, Jenny. Um...
Red D: Right, so should we dive in? I'm sorry, I'm gonna do the very standard thing and just stick to the I guess the order that we have here. And so Jenny, I guess it means you're up again. But... um
Jen: excellent Ready?
Red D: How do you want to kick it? Great.
Jamie: process
Red D: Great.
Jen: I'm ready.
Red D: Love it. Love your enthusiasm.
Jen: Yeah.
Red D: so Something. that you really enjoyed or yeah.
Jen: Mmm.
Red D: Go ahead.
Jen: Yeah. um Actually, before I say it, I just want... I'm going to... Oh, no, Jamie, don't stop writing extra points. This is going to... This organisation is chaos. um One thing I was...
Red D: ah Yes, I can see what you're about to... Oh, no, sorry. I just saw what you wrote in your point, and I'm so excited because I also had the thought, but I couldn't remember any of the terms.
Jen: I know, right? I had to look them up. I had to look them up.
Red D: Well done.
Jen: um Yeah, I was i was only going to add to what was also quite useful listening to, re -listening to those, because I haven't really evert listened. to us. um just think just because you know you think oh i'm gonna hate the sound of my own voice skinner but um It was actually quite...
Red D: that's Yeah. yeah
Jen: a educational as well because because not in terms of star trek knowledge but in terms of what
Red D: ah
Jen: What? really works and what didn't and it made me realize just about how i articulate things. um Other than the fact that I say arms so many times.
Red D: okay
Jen: Oh, my God. but also just when I'm explaining things. i think sometimes i'm just really like straight to the point and so simplistic and that is So so. uh clearer i should try and do that more often and then when i'm trying to like expand on the point is just totally uh unnecessary so i'm going to try and stick to that
Red D: Ah, see... Oh, maybe I should listen out because I also don't listen. But I guess what you're saying is by listening, you have some feedback for yourself that you're trying to incorporate.
Jen: Yes, yet mostly the ones I was moderating.
Red D: no
Jen: it It was that ah facilitation role.
Red D: oh
Jen: um you know and feeling i think you know when when i'm doing them but i feel like i need to sort of introduce everything but actually i'm just going Great. Thanks, Jamie. you know rather than okay thank you for that red that was lovely oh yes really interesting points and now i think it's over to jamie if you wouldn't mind jamie please you know like
Red D: Yes.
Jamie: Uh -huh.
Red D: Yes, but I think it always, I also, I mean, I haven't listened to myself moderating, but it is like, can I just be that?
Jen: yes
Red D: direct or to have to like segue as the term, people's favorite terms.
Jen: ah No segue needed. Anyway, that was my little minor minor point. But the the main thing I was going to say was that I agree with B 'Elanna and the rash on Harry is super cute.
Jen: That's super cute. It's very pretty and it also reminds me of the markings on the trill.
Red D: Yes.
Jen: Dax. in deep space nine.
Red D: Excellent reference.
Jen: um And then I went down a... er a completely different uh what's What do you call it when you...
Red D: Rabbit hole?
Jen: rest rabbit hole like a mind rabbit hole I'm actually reading um these sci -fi books which i'm really enjoying at the moment called shards of earth
Jamie: thank you
Jamie: Oh, I know where you're going. I know where you're going. Oh, gosh.
Jen: And so the only... time i can think of that i really other in Star Trek Star Trek is the only time until these books that I can think of where there's this character that Is, uh...
Jen: Sim, sim. Beyond.
Jamie: and beard.
Jen: ah yep where you you have this creature attached to you or within you
Red D: i
Jen: And then you retain the memories of all the different... Um, you know, people that have been attached. um generations. Prior to that. And in Deep Space Nine, of course.
Jen: um it's a very you know meaningful and special and lovely situation and in these books shards of earth um it is wildly the opposite it's like really gruesome it's absolutely horrific it's um Yeah, and basically They're called Tothiats.
Jamie: That's it.
Red D: but
Jamie: is Mm -hmm.
Red D: ah Okay.
Jen: once they're attached. um You also are immortal. right
Red D: oh
Jen: but you can experience pain.
Red D: oh
Jen: So it's pretty rough.
Jamie: Yeah, that is really bad.
Jen: It's it's like terrible.
Red D: i wrote down What's the...
Jen: You're dead.
Red D: chance of earth ah like maybe i'll read this but based on your final comments i'm not sure i can survive
Jamie: Nice.
Jen: i'm really enjoying them there is gruesome bits but you know, he said all the time. So. But yeah, some of them are ah based on injuries that these Tothiots. sustain and they have to regrow limbs and
Red D: oh
Jen: yeah oh and there's this there's this like gangster alien that likes to to to basically torture.
Jamie: oh yeah The hook and the razor.
Jen: The Toffeeettes. But the Tothiacs can't die, so it's... Just, yeah, really horrific.
Red D: Well, that sounds like a nightmare.
Jen: yeah you can basically pull them apart you know organ by organ and they so they still won't die and they oh oh it's awful red but um i just it just brought me to mind
Jamie: Yeah.
Red D: ah
Jamie: Could you not have sticked stuck with this sheet? He just looks like a speckled targ.
Jen: Yes.
Jamie: As B 'Elanna did.
Jen: The Star Trek version is much lovelier.
Red D: Yes, I did also, I really liked that moment because I think They have a nice friendship that comes up every now and again. um she can call him cute but it's not you know it's not like a budding romance or anything
Jen: Hmm.
Red D: It's just.
Jamie: I agree. She's just sexualizing him. There's nothing deep there.
Red D: no like he is i always forget but he i think is quite a bit younger than her I mean, to me, they all kind of look the same age as each other because I'm older, so I wouldn't distinguish that. But I like that little interaction.
Red D: Oh. It was very sweet.
Jamie: Interesting.
Jen: You're not old either, Ed.
Red D: Thank you Jenny, thank you.
Jen: this is
Red D: um
Jamie: I refuse to take any final questions from the audience.
Jen: When we' we're 80 we'll look back and, you know. We're sweet.
Red D: That's true. That is true. Jamie, and anything to add up to Jenny's point? Otherwise I think you're up next.
Jamie: I am.
Red D: You are indeed.
Jamie: I am.
Red D: And I think this is maybe when you listen back to this episode, you can could think, how can I be a better podcast participant?
Jamie: Oh, you would like me to speak, would you?
Red D: Yes, that's it. yeah You're next.
Jamie: Well, I mean, if you'd only just said proceed, I would have. um don't know why i'm sort of moved to be awkward by the fact that uh brian blessed's impending fifth uh 90th i'd like to talk about the fact that there's a huge element of in the first scene of this
Red D: Proceed.
Red D: yes
Jamie: It just looks like Harry Kim woke up. got onto the bridge to start his shift hung over his balls without having had his coffee saw a ship on the screen and just chose violence and said right forget everything just open fire which is basically what he did and the entire crew just goes along with it uh on the basis of his hunch now the fact that he's subsequently proven right It doesn't sort of...
Jamie: assuaged a number of questions that i think i'd have had when i was the captain so i just thought by way of uh conversational peace for this i'd invite you both to give me a view of what your questions might have been as the captain when, harry worked in the instant, Harry woke up and chose violence.
Red D: Yeah, he did. I mean, I think that's an excellent way of putting it because that is how it comes across.
Jamie: No. It's a bit like me just going along the road and then sort of seeing another car and then suddenly saying, right, they're after us, get the gun out and starting... starting shooting i mean you'd have questions how i had the gun as well but you know
Red D: Awesome! It was very cool. quick teaser or short teaser you know like that opening sequence so it all like kind of kicked off very... quickly strongly and uncharacteristically i guess
Jamie: Well exactly, yeah.
Jen: I mean, I think she had the right
Jamie: Jenny, do you have any thoughts or questions that you'd have had as a skipper?
Jen: okay
Jamie: And if so, what are they? You or Jenny, yes.
Jen: Oh, me. Um. Well, I think Janeway did all the right things though, didn't she? because she She relieved him of duty, told him to go see the doctor.
Jen: But still. in you know set to vote to investigating whether in fact though was evidence of them wanting to fire first.
Jen: So, you know, I think job well done
Jamie: and in the moment you don't think she should have been like no stop firing explain there's been a a misfire
Jen: I think you just did it, didn't you?
Jamie: I know, but you could still...
Jen: He was too quick.
Jamie: Stop and like run rather than engage in a prolonged shooting fest
Red D: I have to admit, I guess it would have ruined the episode, but... She could have acted quicker. and
Jamie: Yeah. Wait, did you just criticise the Skipper?
Red D: Yippee.
Jamie: Because I will not stand for that red. Captain Janeway's leadership is above reproach.
Red D: It is above reproach, but she is also human and also a part of a TV tv series that has to... the web stories. um But...
Red D: I did feel like... There was time to stop him.
Jamie: Hmm.
Red D: Wasn't there?
Jen: Maybe it was also the element of... surprised because No one could have predicted that they were suddenly going to need to like restrain Harry.
Red D: That's true. That is true. And also... it's when i was watching i was like oh that was she could have acted faster but Maybe she has so much trust. in like her crew and hurry that she Thought.
Red D: He must know what he's doing. I dunno.
Jen: Yeah.
Jamie: the junior, Vincent.
Jen: And shook.
Jamie: who's just opened fire on a random ship.
Red D: okay
Jamie: It's a lot of trust, but okay, okay.
Red D: Also, he...
Jamie: let's see I see the point.
Red D: he Yeah. i mean he does have access to more information on his dashboard i guess than she does
Jamie: a I've seen the point gracefully.
Red D: Oh.
Jamie: You should all remember this in future.
Red D: That one time. Let's file it away, Jenny.
Jamie: The evening is young.
Red D: um So I think it's.
Jen: And yet the... argument over monster munch continues
Red D: but oh
Jamie: You never asked for pickled onion.
Red D: Now you know.
Jamie: You just asked for Monster Munch.
Jen: Hehehe.
Jen: Won't do.
Jamie: Dear viewers from America, Monster Munch is the greatest snack food on the face of the planet and single... mindedly the one argument for why ah You know.
Jamie: We should make America Great Britain again.
Jen: this is
Jamie: You don't know so much. That's the argument. If we do that you would have. And it would be worth it.
Red D: Um. I can...
Jamie: obviously in jest.
Red D: This is... Obviously, everything on this podcast is set in chess. People, please don't come for us.
Jen: stuff
Red D: um Yes, I think I'm a very bad... sometimes i'm very bad at getting things for people because i'll get to the store C3 Monster Munt flavors. be totally paralyzed of indecision.
Red D: Like, not just call the person or text them to find out because there's a part of me that thinks I should know what the right answer is. And then... it's such a s simple problem to solve but i would make it a much bigger deal than it should be anyway
Jen: Oh my goodness, you're so much like Jamie like in that respect.
Red D: Yes. Jamie's like, ah sorry, I'm not in that case like red. but but
Jen: ah No, but you know he'd feel like he should know. um And therefore... We're just check. just Risk.
Red D: ah
Jen: Getting the wrong thing.
Red D: Jamie. is lit beautifully right now on screen, but he looks very perturbed. So I'm gonna jump jump in with my point.
Jen: i see
Red D: It's still in the teaser. i think or maybe just after when um Jamie gives the order for
Jamie: so so so so
Red D: hurry to be stopped but i was very impressed with chakotay's leap over the barrier from the lower
Jamie: m
Red D: section of the bridge. to the higher section of the bridge. It was some very impressive parkour. I would say. So. I was very impressed. I don't know if anyone else noticed that.
Red D: um But... Yes, I'm always impressed by parkour for some reason. So Jenny, back to you.
Jen: So I think I missed the parkour. I'm gonna have to go back and...
Red D: That was a very little moment, but he's very athletic, very...
Jen: re -watch it red
Red D: Just leaping over them.
Jamie: Is live
Jen: i think I think someone...
Red D: Yeah.
Jamie: He is the world's sexiest man 20 19 -something.
Red D: He is a very attractive man.
Jen: I think someone just, you know, is constantly has the eye on Chakotay.
Jamie: Amen. Boy, does he just look...
Red D: ah
Jen: f
Jamie: Or you just approve it this episode.
Red D: He was. He was my favorite. Wow. Published for a long time, I would say. anyway i don't know how to that came out wrong but um Yes, and I look like it was actually Chakotay, not like a stunt double.
Red D: i mean i didn't rewind or anything but you know
Jen: hey
Red D: When you find out like how often there are stunt doubles for what you would not really consider a stunt. um I think that video was him.
Jamie: Hmm.
Red D: but anyway I can go back and check. But either way, I was impressed. It looked good. for Captain Scoot. It's good thing. Jenny, over to you.
Jen: Well done, Chakotay. I'm just I was just thinking, actually, thanks so much. That's the one thing about Star Trek that you tend to have in other shows is that... um There's normally you know like a hot guy for the girls and a hot girl for the guys But I never really...
Jen: I found that with Voyager in terms of Um. Chakotay is not really my type but I don't think any of the others were either. I just, you know, thought there were a lot of hot girls. basically a lot of seven
Red D: kind of attractive because they're on TV but
Jen: Janeway.
Jamie: that is
Red D: Yeah.
Jen: Yeah, yeah They're all attractive.
Jamie: I told you before. Stop. Sexualising and objectifying the women of Star Trek. That's my tool.
Jen: it Well, I mean... Given the episode, they might have.
Red D: but if you had to pick
Jamie: And that's Harry's job.
Red D: I mean, sorry to break, like, I don't know why we've never discussed this, but if you had to pick someone to marry. One of the meals from the crew.
Jen: Oh.
Red D: Who would you choose, Jenny? Because I think Chakotay is a pretty good option.
Jamie: wait Was that who would you choose, Jenny, or who would you choose, Jamie?
Red D: Jenny. just stop Because are you're not going to marry Paris.
Jen: Well.
Red D: Peace.
Jamie: Why, he's buff.
Red D: I'm ending with cheers.
Jen: That's funny you should say that actually because I was just about to say
Jamie: He's a buff!
Jen: Can I choose the later version of Paris?
Jamie: yeah
Red D: Okay, yes.
Jen: In which case it would be Paris, I think.
Red D: Okay.
Jen: Yeah, once he, you know, grows up, you know.
Red D: That's fair.
Jen: i was a bit responsible and all those things um but yeah only if i had to because um Whilst they're all attractive, men and women. um Then no. my type
Red D: None of them are your type.
Jen: Yeah.
Red D: Okay. I think Chakotay... is a little bit my type. that's maybe why Okay.
Jen: What about I feel like this is the sexist without asking Jamie I mean
Jamie: Oh, so kind of you to remember I'm in the room.
Jen: Jamie?
Jamie: May may I just burst in through this glass floor?
Red D: That was very smooth.
Jen: okay
Red D: I think it's good to put Jamie in his place every now and again, but fine.
Jamie: oma
Red D: Over to you, Jamie.
Jamie: No, i I don't want to share. Apparently I need pushing in my place, so my contribution isn't valued.
Red D: But are we asking him which male crew member would you marry or which female crew member?
Jamie: I'm... I will tell you when I receive equal pay for doing this podcast to you guys.
Jen: I knew he wouldn't answer. I knew it.
Jamie: Hang on, which male guy would I marry from this?
Jen: Or female.
Red D: Well, yes, I guess to be totally equivalent. but
Jen: yeah
Jamie: and
Jamie: think. That. If it was a male, I would make a point of intellect overlooks, so probably the doctor. um and then if it was Female.
Jamie: Uh... uh is there any chance of a secondment with the ambassadorship in an on planet teresia
Jen: and so
Red D: ah be a about it Teresa. What's that?
Jamie: Yeah.
Red D: But that's funny.
Jamie: Well, the one that...
Jen: Are you sure about that, Jay?
Jamie: soon.
Jen: I mean...
Red D: You'll let up.
Jamie: Hey, if Riker could solve this, I could. And one of my very next points is Riker could have solved this whole situation, so hell yeah.
Red D: Well, let's quickly... Jenny, have you given your point yet? Or are we still...
Jen: No, sorry, sorry i i but i
Red D: No, but go ahead.
Jamie: no It's very weird, she's not bought a lot of house with us.
Red D: Sorry, we we derailed at the...
Jen: ah
Red D: Cliff Shag, Mario, Star Trek, but anyway.
Jen: We did. Yeah. We did. And you know what, Red? Jamie did both sexes and we didn't get our chance to choose the females.
Jamie: Yeah, come on, guys.
Jen: Save that for another time.
Jamie: Disagree, disagree.
Red D: Yeah, let's save it.
Jamie: No!
Jen: I haven't done. my point. My point was just that... um' I know that All of it is science fiction. But I did struggle with some of the science fiction in this, like the explanations for stuff. And I was like, this is, it seems very...
Jen: I'm not sure about that.
Red D: Anything in particular. that ah
Jen: um Just all of the explanations for how. Well, it turned out to be a lie anyway. So... it'll Turned out okay in the end, but all of the explanations from the Tiresians. as to like how the genetic material appeared in Harry and why it was hidden and then suddenly it wasn't hidden. and you know all these different things.
Jen: and
Red D: Would you have been a bit more s skeptical? if you are hearing these stories.
Jamie: Okay.
Jen: well Yeah, and in particular, you know, the doctor says, you know, Jane Ray simply asks him, like, Why couldn't we see it in his genetic code before? And he says, oh, well, they were hidden in the... codons or whatever it was um of the i don't know what it is Possibly codons.
Jamie: in the coulons.
Jen: I can't remember all the genetic terms.
Jamie: He's not getting close to me. Oh.
Jen: I think. Uh, Coup d 'en soire. Anyway. um And... Um. you know that it was hidden in like recessive genes or alleles or whatever it was and um Then later on... He's looking at...
Jen: The past. um tests genetic testing from Harry. and he says well it's just not there i'm like well but but Wasn't that what you were looking at before?
Jen: like so
Red D: He dropped the ball. Well, he made a mistake for sure.
Jen: and like just the whole thing about how what even if it was true A true story, and the genetic. uh code starts asserting itself in ways that suddenly changed his behaviour.
Jen: Like into. I'm now... a homing beacon has lit and like i don't know there was just a lot of um
Jamie: yeah
Red D: Yes, when he was like... The brain just forms new neurons and that just changes the behavior.
Jen: Yeah, they were so long.
Red D: I was like... I'm not sure.
Jen: tenuous stuff but I did think a In the end, a lot of it turned out to be lies anyway. So I guess, yeah, as you say, it's just the doctor doctor dropping the ball.
Jamie: It can be bad science as long as it's false.
Jen: And then B, I did like the doctor's explanation.
Red D: yeah
Jen: Planetary analogies. um Like he talks about how babies can instinctively know not to.
Red D: oh
Jen: to to know to hold their breath in water.
Jamie: Hmm.
Jen: um, And that's uh It could... be like genetically coded i don't know um this is very or very tenuous but i did appreciate the effort
Jamie: Hmm.
Red D: It was a bit like broad strokes. Like don't. Don't. try to get into the detail.
Jamie: Hmm.
Jen: Yes.
Red D: That's it.
Jen: Yeah.
Red D: and Well, you are our science officer. or our resident medical experts. ah It's good to have your opinion on on that.
Jamie: subordinate officer but yes often insubordinate too.
Jen: Uh... I love that I've got this term when I'm like... Not remotely an expert.
Red D: Of the three. Three of us, you're definitely that person.
Jen: And I'd just like to point out, yes Jamie, I was correct.
Red D: Well.
Jen: The term is codon. C O D O N.
Jamie: Good one.
Red D: Very good. She's back to ordinate.
Jamie: I mean, I just thought you were implying that he got it in there. colonic irrigation session which I was a little bit surprised by so I didn't rip all that from this but I wasn't watching too closely
Jen: No, no.
Jen: A codon is a sequence of three consecutive nucleotides in DNA. Oh, I'm already.
Red D: of course
Jen: the fundamental unit of the genetic code.
Red D: want to. Oh, I forgot that term. I did study. Um, biology? Physiology? Um... great thanks jenny jamie you're up and again i'm just going to say help you to be your lit I don't know if Jenny feels the same, but...
Jen: Oh, yes. you look like you're in some kind of um spotlight you're going to give a
Jamie: Detective Noir, I think, is the title.
Jen: this I think you're about to give the speech from Hamlet.
Red D: ah
Jamie: I know. as it happens. So I took a look at my first point after I wrote it down. uh suggested a parallel to me so you are both like myself huge fans of Brooklyn Nine -Nine and it just struck me that I thought the closest
Red D: oh
Jamie: Analogue. to... harry's behavior in the intro sequence of just seeing another ship and without asking questions just immediately opening fire reminded me of Terry Jeffords just before he got signed off active frontline duty.
Red D: ah
Jamie: And he goes into the department store, sees the mannequin, and just goes, Woo! Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
Jen: okay
Jamie: It's not hyperventilating. I was like, that is that is Mary Kim right now.
Jen: Amen.
Red D: have to watch that episode again that is such a good um reference jamie
Jamie: Yes.
Jen: Let's...
Jamie: Yeah. So I challenge you all to characterise his behaviour as anything other than Terry Jeffords when he's lost the edge because he's worried about...
Jen: Yep.
Jamie: Cagney and Lacey in their first precious new moments of life.
Red D: When I saw this point, I was like... what is Jamie about to say I was like I really could not draw any parallels from what I could remember and then that
Jamie: look
Red D: that beauty came off.
Jamie: and lo
Red D: Thank you for that.
Jamie: Woo! Right, right, right, right, right.
Red D: ah
Jamie: Sorry.
Jen: Oh.
Red D: ah he He's so good at playing like... i get scared which is like just so funny because he's so Tough. and brave.
Jen: Scary himself.
Red D: and Yeah. Oh, that is so funny.
Jen: oh no do you know what though see now you've reminded me of like ah like one of my favorite ever Brooklyn Nine -Nine Screaming.
Red D: Oh yes.
Jen: Um. It seems.
Jamie: Gang, gang, gang, gang, gang, gang, gang, with the guitar.
Jen: Is... Yes, yeah, with the guitar.
Jamie: Happy to speak.
Jen: yeah You know when the Jake accidentally arrests someone without enough evidence.
Jamie: Yeah, I'll annoy him and take him with me.
Jen: And then they have to try and.
Red D: yes
Jen: um you know find enough evidence within a 24 -hour period so he tries absolutely everything and as a last resort he's like i'm going to annoy you into confessing Then he starts strumming the guitar.
Red D: He tries to torture her.
Red D: ah
Jen: And then just screaming. who Favorite.
Red D: Oh my gosh, I wish I had a memory to share but my memory is just not that good. um Except... When boils on fire. Or that French leather jacket that he finds from Lost Property.
Jen: Yeah.
Jamie: this system
Red D: And I think Holt is like, my God. Boyle's turned into a lesbian or something. funny But yeah.
Jen: so
Red D: but that i don't remember the screaming as well as you guys that was hilarious
Jen: All right. Send you a YouTube video for that one later. it It's only because we've watched it so many times.
Jamie: this was
Red D: i but i was just i said this to a friend like um and i have friends and maybe you are some of those friends where
Jen: yeah
Red D: No. what
Jamie: That wasn't a what the hell, we're not your friends. That was ah a...
Red D: yeah
Jamie: How negative is this?
Jen: oh I want to get...
Red D: Are you...
Jen: I thought it was hilarious because it sounded like maybe.
Red D: But you're looking at something.
Jen: Maybe you're my friends.
Red D: No, sorry. Can I finish my point? I thought you sent something on the chat. I'm getting so confused. um I watch you know sitcoms over and over again or funny movies, but I will never remember a line from a sitcom. Like I have a friend who can just quote lines from movies.
Red D: tv phone like i mean very easily but if a friend says something funny
Jen: m
Red D: I will never forget.
Jamie: first
Red D: Like 10 years later I still remember that.
Jen: ah
Jamie: I'm assuming it happens quite rarely for us.
Red D: No. I'm so... at least i can remember some things is is my point anyway where were we i think i'm up next Uh...
Jen: Do you know what? Do you know what though?
Jamie: I just thought it was appropriate to bring the screaming guitar into this.
Jen: You saying that, Red, just reminded me of something that Jamie said. like once months and months and months ago, but... It just... It cracked me up so bad and then whenever I think about it, it still does.
Jen: by
Red D: Oh, that is the best.
Jen: Yeah.
Jamie: for that
Red D: Are you gonna share what he said or can is that not for the podcast?
Jamie: All right.
Jen: Oh. ah
Jamie: i will play the guitar at you until you say it so choose wisely you have 10 seconds
Jen: Oh, gosh. ah Well, I'm not going to be very good at the delivery, but... um
Jamie: Five seconds.
Jen: I'd been talking about a certain situation at work. um
Red D: Yes.
Jen: And then like... Oh god, it's going to require background or in context. and oh ah Okay, nutshell, in a nutshell. ah Person at work, super head CEO. um um Like a freelance designer.
Jen: ah and interaction between them. um steadily getting less and less professional and turning into a like a...
Red D: Oh dear.
Jen: well you know just very, very silly interaction.
Jamie: Oh, God, yeah, anyway, gang.
Jen: And then. Wait, it was Jamie's description of it. Okay. Which is like, I can't remember. Jamie, can you remember what you said? it was like a Yeah.
Jen: I'm sorry, I actually can't remember. I can only remember the... um The gist, that is the problem. Oh.
Jamie: Was it?
Red D: message just a just
Jamie: Was it? The freelancer doesn't like money.
Jen: Shut up. No, it something about charging it. it' Leading the charge off Mount Crazy. I don't know.
Jamie: Oh God, yeah, yeah.
Jen: it It was something along those lines, but much better.
Jamie: Ah, yeah, your CEO joined her leading the charge off Mount Crazy.
Jen: Something like that. oh i don't know i don't even remember the details of it but i just see it was hilarious
Red D: Oh, I do love that when you just have, I feel like I've lost them now that we're talking about it, like just a little memory that you can recall to make yourself crack up.
Jamie: Hmm.
Jen: It was just so ah accurate. as well
Jamie: and
Red D: the
Jamie: yeah
Jen: who
Red D: That was amazing, love it. Um... Okay. well my second point and we're still only on the bridge after harry ah you know, chose anger or whatever it is But... And I think we discussed how Janeway handles it well, like she's...
Red D: you know, exploring all avenues. But when she says to to hurry. Let the doctor have a look at you for that cut. I mean that delivery was... Cold. That delivery was...
Red D: i don't know if anyone else thought it was pretty brutal but i thought wow she's be pretty soon. I mean, he did just open fire. any orders but I thought she acted that very well um
Jen: Yes, she was stern.
Red D: That's...
Jen: That was scary, Janeway.
Red D: Yeah. Yeah, she was like very scary. because he's like her favorite well not favorite but you know she feels a lot of responsibility because he's so young. m
Jen: I think she was mad as well wasn't she?
Red D: Jamie? Yeah, I mean, obviously she's she should be mad.
Jen: Look.
Red D: I guess it's not really a jolly. but But we should deliver the line. That was very good. No.
Red D: Jamie? Okay. with this opening it for a cat posing for a cat
Jamie: Yeah, there's a cat that demands to be in here with me, although it's just run off the moment I open the door
Red D: Oh.
Jamie: um But anyway, sorry, we we may have gone off on a tangent after the introduction of Terry Jeffords to this. Who's next?
Red D: I just gave my point, so I'm glad to know that you were listening. But I'll be back to Jenny. Teddy you're up. Oh. Yes, you Jenny.
Jen: I was...
Red D: I don't know if you're disappointed.
Jen: I was.
Red D: Oh, you eat it.
Jen: and Unprepared.
Red D: I hate you almost so much.
Jen: Yep. but It's okay. I'm just about finished
Red D: Sorry.
Jen: Okay, back to me already. My goodness.
Red D: Yeah.
Jen: Mm. So I did rather enjoy the fact that this was a bit of a... um break from tradition it's a version of expectations
Red D: but
Jen: um and the all the It was a lot of like... Creepy touching. but you know, from the women.
Jamie: That's just how you say thank you, Jenny.
Red D: How do you feel about the way ya' they say thank you?
Jamie: I lost three regions.
Jen: Yeah, I mean I found it super creepy, but you don't you don't often see that character and women do you you often have the creepy guy you know
Red D: No. Yeah.
Jen: perving on the the women. See you. Adequate. Enjoy. Yep. sort of switch around And it reminded me of my favourite ever Shakespeare production, which I went to see in Stratford.
Jen: The Taming of the Shrew.
Red D: Oh amazing.
Jen: And all the roles were switch genders. So.
Red D: oh
Jen: It was the women taming their future husbands. um
Red D: I haven't seen a Taming of the Shrew already, actually, I don't think.
Jen: Well. It was so... Cleverly done. Because... Well, i don't I don't even know how to describe it really, but it was, yeah, it was brilliant, and brilliant production. And I love the way they switched it around.
Jen: um Yeah. I...
Red D: Sounds very good.
Jen: Recommend.
Red D: I need to expand my Shakespeare for sure. Jamie, what did you think of all the creepy touching?
Jamie: um Well, it probably brings me on to my next point if i'm brutally honest i mean to me it was a case of how else do you tell someone they're a member of your species than by basically offering group sex on introduction for the first interaction um And I think that encapsulates how I felt about it.
Jamie: Obviously there was no other way in which they could have engaged. With Harry, I don't think he's got anything to complain about. They were open with their intent from the beginning. He should have realised there was something wrong, given all the touchy -feely. I mean, gosh. Showing emotions. How on earth could he not have known that something was desperately wrong? And frankly, I'm i'm all for it.
Jamie: healthy outdoors. fun in the sun. To quote the theme tune from Red Dwarf.
Jen: so
Jamie: whose characters one also feels might have enjoyed this. But just some musings that were my point, but actually segway rather nicely with your question. um I was all for the female empowerment on show.
Red D: Well then, I mean... i also have i guess a related point so i can jump in with mine i guess but i thought it was funny about
Jamie: different.
Red D: Yeah, so just if you haven't seen the episode. these toregians they say thank you by like stroking the back of the hand on your cheek I don't know why I'm doing it now to myself, but that's what I simply...
Jamie: I do think you should thank yourself for that point, Red.
Red D: But... um i did like how well two things about paris actually on the scene on the planet was paris is not getting any attention and he's a little bit perturbed i think i mean it's not a big moment it's not a big moment but You know, normally he's the...
Red D: ah
Jamie: o
Red D: the star of the show, let's put it that way.
Jamie: Which show are we talking about?
Red D: Up. I don't know, the Paris show.
Jamie: What do you mean by the star?
Jen: pieces
Red D: And then also I like how he like... It was kind of ironic how he jumped into what he, like, prevent some sexual harassment from Harry towards his woman before he realized that what the thank you.
Jamie: Mm -hmm.
Red D: um That's it. uh uh was but he's like harry as he sees how are you like about to stroke some woman's cheek and then it's like oh i can't say that means thank you yeah so i guess this is all part of his arc his changing arc his character arc jenny as you kind of reference to it.
Jen: Mm.
Jen: Becoming marriage material.
Red D: He was there to stop the sexual harassment on this planet, but it's sexual harassment that they wanted.
Jamie: hey
Red D: So he wasn't needed.
Jamie: course. Iris is Star Trek HR. which I think tells us and explains a lot.
Red D: Yeah. Yes?
Jen: It does.
Red D: I mean... This was just, as you said, Jamie, a fun silly episode. But I mean, this woman being so forward should have been a major red flag to everybody that was on that away mission. But anyway.
Red D: We are blitzing through and I think we all have a similar amount of points. so This could be a quick one. jenny back to you.
Jen: Oh, well. I actually thought I'd blathered on for so long about... Completely. you non -Star Trek points that I should try and speed mine up but I sped them up too much.
Red D: a man
Jen: um
Jamie: Hmm.
Jen: i have my last point uh i just thought the teresian woman Right at the end. the one Harry tries to take hostage. did Such a great job!
Jen: um She had this blend of Total indifference to Harry's life. you know, well, we need to...
Jamie: Which I for one shared.
Jen: We need to... need a large amount of nucleated cells to conceive so you know obviously you don't um and um
Jamie: You'd have died happy.
Red D: The end.
Jen: Then also she was just quite blase about her own life as well, which was quite chilling.
Jamie: Hmm.
Jen: You know, she said... You know this won't work taking me hostage. well All my Turisian ladies will just kill me. You're too important. you know um delivered so indifferently.
Red D: Yeah, the the biological drive to procreate was...
Jamie: Hmm.
Red D: Or something. was really driving a lot of that behavior.
Jamie: Hmm.
Jen: that strong.
Jamie: Hmm.
Red D: a not to personal concern.
Jen: Hmm. Yeah, it was scary
Red D: Yeah.
Jen: So I enjoyed her acting as a villain.
Red D: Ew.
Red D: Yeah, she was good and she didn't have a lot to do, but she did it very well.
Jen: Hmm.
Red D: hello First of all.
Jen: Exactly.
Red D: je I mean, sorry, not jeie Jamie, I was trying to merge your names there. But Jamie. I think if Jenny's finished, you're up.
Jamie: um i mean i i was I mean, I just had a number of thoughts and I put one of them into the chat that I think Harry would have died happy. And.
Red D: I told you.
Jamie: was this being paralleled in the infamous Uh... I think it's... Futurama death by snoo snoo scene her which I leave the viewers to look up themselves because even for my rather low bar it's it's distasteful to describe.
Red D: ah lots
Jamie: um And I'll wrap all of these sentiments up in the the view of... Where was Riker? where Where was Riker to meet the need of this episode? Someone to bring this to a peaceful, non -kidnappy conclusion by just quite clearly being up to every single demand which would have been put on him.
Jamie: as opposed to the clearly... chewed up and spat out frat boy who is the uh the only other gentleman on the planet I feel that a key casting opportunity was missed on this one and I invite you both to join me in that particular assertion.
Red D: You know, I think you actually have a point, Miss Jamie.
Jamie: How gracious of you.
Red D: Like... No, I don't mean that.
Jamie: That's surely going to be to say, right? My gosh.
Red D: I'm sorry. You know, the problem with being I don't know what that is. Earnest? Is that sometimes I come across as sarcastic? Um... Because...
Jamie: No you don't.
Red D: Aww. I was being serious.
Jamie: That doesn't just happen if you're earnest.
Red D: I wasn't being sarcastic. I was really...
Jamie: You weren't being sarcastic.
Red D: Ugh.
Jamie: Nor was I.
Jen: I knew it.
Red D: Oh, well, you being sarcastic, because honestly, I... I do think Rika, sorry, could have managed that situation much better and he would have enjoyed himself in the process. Sorry.
Jamie: Um, Yeah, I mean...
Red D: That's it.
Jamie: There wouldn't have been a planet left afterwards, but that's that's different, I suppose.
Red D: I'm sorry, Jenny, you were going to say something.
Jen: Oh, I was just going to say I know exactly what you mean, Red. I also experienced this and then I realized afterwards that probably Everyone's up. I was being sarcastic. but I really wasn't.
Jamie: Can I just check? Are we talking about that just saying things in the earnest voice, or are we talking about experiencing Riker?
Jen: The earnest voice.
Red D: Oh, there's a lot of things. I think Riker could... Would have made it actually better. What is going on?
Jamie: I don't know, that that wasn't what I was questioning. Anyway, I was... perhaps making an oblique joke about where Jenny's particular comment and thought was focused.
Red D: ah Maybe you were being sarcastic, but I didn't pick it up. But... ah You're being facetious.
Jamie: And then, so fast, you teach them how to lie, cheat and steal and then they bring snark into the conversation.
Red D: I think.
Red D: ah but Yeah, I think he could have handled it single -handedly, as they say. Although Harry did pretty well. I guess he got suspicious and then he pretended to play along and then he...
Red D: Me, yeah. made an escape attempt.
Jen: fold his way out In the end.
Red D: uh Yeah, exactly. So I guess that brings to me I only had really one more point and then maybe my other point is a theme. I did love seeing the Strelitzia, the flower in Harry's quarters, on the planet.
Jamie: Mmm. Wee.
Red D: Because that's a flower from South Africa.
Jamie: Aww.
Jen: oh
Jamie: adorable.
Red D: I think they will. common now because i think i've sure i've heard about them growing like in certain parts of the uk and stuff so but you know there's like They had to try and make things look exotic, so they would try to get things that were less familiar, I guess, to...
Jen: oh Yeah.
Red D: American audiences or global audiences. and so This is a very spiky. ah kind of almost bird -looking flower. um I think that's true, yeah. So, hours. I'm excited to see it as a celebrity.
Red D: Um... I guess. Okay, I guess no one else noticed that though.
Jamie: I have no idea what one of those fuzzies looks like.
Red D: That's the comments.
Jen: Well, I know, I think. Now you've mentioned it, I think I remember seeing it. Thank you. sort of spiky red thing
Red D: Yeah, exactly. So any more comments or favorite moments or funny lines before we move on to themes?
Jen: no That's me.
Red D: No. Great. Jenny, I think you have put in quite a few beans. Do you want to kick us off?
Jen: Yep. Phew, sprang to mind. Identity. You know, Harry's questioning. who he really is is he to region or i think in the end he realizes though that you know He's loyal loyalty another theme loyal to his you know Parents who brought him up and his crew.
Jen: um That's the whole family genetic versus adopted And. with the Turidian ladies, reproduction is, you know, a big theme.
Jamie: That's what we're calling it now, is it?
Jen: Some might. Say obsession.
Red D: Yeah, well. I mean maybe related to...
Jamie: Hey.
Red D: My ones are...
Jamie: i
Red D: Yeah, go ahead.
Jamie: I will not see that bunch of ladies with a healthy sex appetite slut -shamed.
Red D: That's fair. Someone has to stand up for them. But I will counter this. Well, not with that. but
Jamie: Wait, are you slut -shaming them? How dare you?
Red D: No. I am not, but I'm... One particular reading of this episode could be... Never get trapped by a woman. because there is a bit of a bait and switch element of this like oh if you come to our planet you're gonna be so happy you're gonna have three wives we're gonna be having threesomes every night but As Harry's...
Jamie: This is a lot of work.
Red D: It has no responsible time.
Jamie: Let's go.
Red D: They suddenly say, Yeah, you should stay because you have we have to have children. I'm like, that is a different lifestyle to threesomes every night.
Jen: if
Red D: Raising children is not. Hedonistic. Unimonia pleasure. it's ah it's I was like, that's a bit of a bait and switch, if you ask me. um And so...
Jamie: I don't actually know what that means. What is a basin switch?
Red D: What? We'll pretend to be something and then switch it up for something else. Like you're gonna be here enjoying yourself with your three wives but actually
Jamie: It's 12.
Red D: I mean, you know.
Jamie: And each of them have a child that needs...
Jen: Yeah, go.
Red D: Yes, but you have to raise yourself.
Jamie: Don't care.
Red D: So... um So one one reading, its maybe it's not a theme, but I was like, don't get yourself trapped by a woman.
Jamie: And again, I feel we need an ah HR rep on this podcast.
Jen: this is
Red D: Just, it's just literally litery literaryter literary interpretation, maybe interpretation.
Jamie: I did love the... um The Odyssey theme at the
Red D: Ah, yes.
Jamie: in a moment which absolutely underlines the aesthetic. positives of his moving away from his Taresian markings.
Jamie: uh Ensign Kim is told by Neelix that ah he... ruse their absence as he thought they made him look distinguished, whilst using the tale of Odysseus and the sirens as a metaphor for his experience.
Jamie: Running. A Teresian gauntlet. frenzied would be mothers of his children, I suppose.
Red D: yes that was a good way to wrap up the episode i think kind of gave it a bit of gravitas but Maybe.
Jamie: Yeah. Yeah, it was it was good that Harry knew that he looked better, I agree.
Red D: na
Jen: sister
Red D: you know tying it back to that to that myth and some
Jamie: I am. I think if Neelix tells you you looked great with the previous look, you know moving away from it was a good decision.
Red D: I also thought he looked good, so... oh well
Jamie: She said he looked like a speckled tog.
Red D: I think that's what it is.
Jamie: I don't even know what a tog looks like, but it sounds offensive.
Red D: i think it's supposed to be a compliment but yeah um Great. So, star players! I think I might be at a loss here, but someone...
Jamie: See ya.
Red D: Someone has some star players already. Thank you, Jenny.
Jen: yeah i mean i think i would opt for because so i so rarely opt for someone who isn't The main cast. I'm gonna go for the Theresian woman who was taken hostage by Harry.
Jen: I just really liked her. chilling boon chilling indifference We will meet.
Jamie: Yeah.
Red D: Nice.
Jen: keep you and murder you and mate with you and you will have our children no matter what. It's terrifying.
Jamie: Not necessarily in that order.
Red D: And I'm being very pragmatic about it. like That's also chilling, I guess.
Jen: Yes, yeah, that was absolutely what was chilling. Just... Pregnantism.
Red D: And Jamie, star player.
Jamie: i I'm going to say the... yeah the blindfold that Harry uses as pretty much the only thing capable of making look Harry Kim as a character look in any way menacing and just at the moment there you think it's either going to get dark or it's going to get kinky
Red D: oh my god i knew
Red D: yeah
Jamie: and it is believable in that moment which is quite surprising for a character as wholesome as Harry Kim and long may he remain that way.
Red D: Ah yes, and speaking of awesome, that scene at the end with Harry and Paris, where... Harry was like I want to be more bold with a woman like you and then Paris reveals he's trying to be more like Harry Kim. which was very sweet.
Red D: but anyway
Jamie: so i think Okay, I'd like to change it.
Jen: oh
Jamie: I'd like to change it to Paris for tutoring Henson Kim in the ways of righteousness.
Red D: ah Well, I was. I was annoyed that you chose the black. Done?
Jamie: Let's go.
Red D: Bye. Scott, thank you. Because I was like, I'm going to do a Jamie and choose in and um'm and and i and i'm an object as my storm player this week. That's, well...
Jamie: Well, I have moved away from the blindfold, so it's it's it's all you.
Jen: Oh, poor Harry.
Red D: The Strelitzia, because then that little... um your periods of the un. A little taste of South Africa on Star Trek. so That is my stop here. I'm being serious, maybe.
Red D: That is why I seem sarcastic. But anyway. um Great. Thank you everybody. Anything else to add?
Jamie: Thank you. Don't do drugs.
Red D: Yeah, don't do... threesomes with very, very enthusiastic ladies.
Jen: Mmm.
Red D: It's probably a trap. of some kind.
Jamie: I'm not going to endorse that particular piece of advice because I will not have our listeners slut -shamed.
Red D: I'm not. shaming anyone i'm just saying if it seems too good to be true it probably is that' my
Jen: okay
Jamie: Um...
Red D: at
Jamie: They're coming.
Red D: No comment should I hit the jingle?
Jamie: up to you really i'm i'm more than happy to discuss why we shouldn't stop people oh okay fine
Red D: I think we could get this. I think we can get this.
Jamie: Someone's giving me a stern look off screen.
Red D: oh
Jen: this just
Red D: We'll make this under an hour. Come on, let's do it. I don't know.
Jamie: We should do these episodes more when we're terrified and that's the start of our lives.
Red D: my voice will
Jen: whoop
Red D: I couldn't hear you over the jingle. Sorry, Jamie. I'm just quickly looking up what is the next episode. Oh wow. Jingles playing. Uh... how do i find this oh
Jen: Yeah, I thought we were gonna get more Borg Where are the boog?
Red D: ah yes Where are the pork? Before and after.
Jamie: Yeah, yeah.
Red D: Does that ring any bells?
Jamie: They were involved in in a incident with multiple creations.
Jen: Nope.
Jamie: There were no group survivors.
Red D: i I think it's a Kez heavy episode, so...
Jamie: Is that a UFO?
Red D: Prepare yourself, Jamie.
Jen: ya
Jamie: Well, I don't know why, I'm really sort of... into my cheeky discourse today.
Red D: Please repeat yourself, you've got 15 seconds before I head stop.
Jamie: i was When you asked if it was quite Kez heavy, I asked if that was a euphemism.
Red D: I sound a bit bad. Anyway, stopping now.
