Identity-Based Goals

It is January. It is the season to set goals for the New Year. Usually, these goals are associated with accomplishments and actions - things we want to do. What if, instead, our goals were focused on who we want to be? Building a coaching practice is intrinsically connected with building ourselves. Our brand is who we are. Whether you are a seasoned coach or just starting, the New Year is the perfect time to reflect on who you are today and the opportunities for self-discovery and self-development. That is where our brand and our personal and professional success come from.

Introduction to Prime Space Podcast

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to Prime Space, a Prime Coaching Academy podcast with your host, Elias Scultori.
00:00:14
Speaker
Hello coaches, welcome to season two of Prime Space.
00:00:21
Speaker
I can't believe that is already season two.
00:00:24
Speaker
I'm very excited for this new chapter and what we are going to be creating here in this year.
00:00:33
Speaker
And thank you so much for listening and being my partner here in this process today to get started.

Goal Setting for the New Year

00:00:42
Speaker
I would like to talk about goals.
00:00:46
Speaker
It's the new year and it's that time of the year that a lot of us are thinking of what is next.
00:00:54
Speaker
We have a big chunk of time ahead of us.
00:00:57
Speaker
What are we going to do?
00:00:59
Speaker
What are the goals that I want to set for myself?
00:01:03
Speaker
So that it keeps me on target.
00:01:07
Speaker
It keeps me focused.
00:01:10
Speaker
And I make the best out of this time.
00:01:12
Speaker
And I'm not talking here about New Year's resolutions.
00:01:18
Speaker
We know that these oftentimes don't work.
00:01:22
Speaker
But it is good from time to time to stop and look back, see what we have accomplished, and see where we want to go from here.
00:01:31
Speaker
I oftentimes, with my clients, we talk about not a whole year goal, but perhaps, you know, even 90 days goal, right?
00:01:41
Speaker
Like what is the goals that we are going to set for the next three months?
00:01:47
Speaker
But anyways, regardless of the time frame, what is the next chapter?
00:01:52
Speaker
What are the goals that we want to set up for ourselves in this next chapter?
00:01:56
Speaker
And I think that it's appropriate for us to talk about this at the beginning of the year because there is a big chunk of time ahead of us.
00:02:04
Speaker
Usually, when we talk about these goals, we tend to focus on things that
00:02:13
Speaker
I want to make X amount of money this year.
00:02:17
Speaker
I want to bring my coaching practice to this next level.
00:02:22
Speaker
I want to attain a certification or sometimes more practical things.
00:02:27
Speaker
I want to buy a house or I want to make more friends.
00:02:32
Speaker
These are usually goals that I hear a lot, and usually we're encouraged to think about these goals.

Identity-Based Habits in 'Atomic Habits'

00:02:43
Speaker
And as I'm reflecting about this, it reminded me of James Clear in the book Atomic Habits.
00:02:53
Speaker
I love so many concepts that he has in that book.
00:02:55
Speaker
I highly recommend the book to everyone.
00:02:58
Speaker
But one of the concepts that it's always part of me and part of my thought process is when he talks on chapter two, the distinction between outcome-based habits and
00:03:13
Speaker
And identity-based habits.
00:03:15
Speaker
And outcome-based habits are outcome of things that there are, what the aspiration is.
00:03:22
Speaker
So I want to quit smoking, or I want to lose weight, or I want to write a book.
00:03:30
Speaker
And he encourages us to think more about identity-based habits, which is not about like I want to quit smoking, something that is so outside of us, but I am not a smoker.
00:03:43
Speaker
I am a healthy person and I take care of my body.
00:03:48
Speaker
I am a writer, and therefore I write.
00:03:53
Speaker
He says in the book that once we have this identity, we are anchored in these identities, then it's inevitable.
00:04:03
Speaker
If I am a writer, of course I'm going to write.
00:04:06
Speaker
If I'm not a smoker, a cigarette is out of the question.
00:04:12
Speaker
If I am a healthy individual, I take care of my body.
00:04:18
Speaker
I am careful with how I deal with my body.
00:04:25
Speaker
So that's an identity-based habit that he encourages us to create.
00:04:33
Speaker
And I think that this is a perfect example for us here as we are setting goals for this next chapter.
00:04:39
Speaker
Can we make more of an identity goal instead of an external goal for ourselves?
00:04:48
Speaker
An outcome-based goal.
00:04:49
Speaker
Can we make it more of an identity-based goal?
00:04:53
Speaker
So instead of, I want to build my coaching practice and do more coaching, I am a coach.
00:05:03
Speaker
That phrase alone, I am a coach, that is loaded.
00:05:08
Speaker
And I see even seasoned coaches sometimes struggling with that particular word, this particular phrase, I am a coach.
00:05:18
Speaker
I am a coach.
00:05:22
Speaker
And I believe so much in that statement because if we truly embody...
00:05:29
Speaker
This statement, I am a coach.
00:05:33
Speaker
If we truly embody this statement, we start behaving differently and we start interacting with prospect clients differently.
00:05:47
Speaker
And creating programs or even the way we go to our computers or we start planning for our programs, it's different just because we live being a coach.
00:06:03
Speaker
But what about other goals?
00:06:05
Speaker
I want to be more compassionate.
00:06:08
Speaker
Right.
00:06:09
Speaker
I am a compassionate person.
00:06:11
Speaker
I want more peace in my life.
00:06:16
Speaker
I live with a peaceful attitude.
00:06:20
Speaker
I want love.
00:06:24
Speaker
I am a loving person.
00:06:26
Speaker
Love is all around me.
00:06:29
Speaker
I want to be more present.
00:06:32
Speaker
I am present.
00:06:35
Speaker
I live present.
00:06:40
Speaker
This is another perfect example of how coaching is not just what we do.
00:06:51
Speaker
Coaching is who we are.
00:06:53
Speaker
It's an example of the importance of living the coaching mindset.
00:06:58
Speaker
Because we talk about the who, we coach the who.
00:07:02
Speaker
Can we live the who?
00:07:06
Speaker
The importance of bringing that coaching mindset and the concept of the coaching mindset to who we are today.
00:07:15
Speaker
So what are your goals for yourself this year?
00:07:20
Speaker
Who do you want to embody?
00:07:24
Speaker
And think more, the encouragement here is for you to think more of this identity-based mindset.
00:07:34
Speaker
That's where your aspirations are going to come from.
00:07:41
Speaker
Build your practice from who you are.
00:07:46
Speaker
And then the steps that you're going to take are inevitable or just a simple matter of gathering information.
00:07:54
Speaker
But that is so easy compared to that identity-based framework.
00:08:02
Speaker
Oftentimes what's happening there is that there is a conflict between who we believe we are, who we believe to be, and the things we say we want.
00:08:16
Speaker
So keep that in mind as you're setting your goals for this coming year.
00:08:22
Speaker
One

Choosing an Anchor Word for Focus

00:08:23
Speaker
good practice that I've had for many years, and I know of other people that have done this as well, is to set a word.
00:08:30
Speaker
What is the word that you want to anchor, be the anchor for this year for you?
00:08:39
Speaker
That's one thing for you to keep in mind.
00:08:42
Speaker
All right.
00:08:43
Speaker
So thank you.
00:08:44
Speaker
I hope this is helpful as you're moving forward here.
00:08:46
