On this episode, I dive into the complexities of professional athlete care and the often blurry lines between private strength coaches and team staff. How much control do coaches really have over their athletes’ training? I talk about why athlete care should always come first—and how a little teamwork can go a long way in ensuring success.

Introduction to Unprofessionalism in Coaching

00:00:01
Jarrod Dyke
Hey everybody, how's it going? Welcome back to First 15 Coachcast. If you haven't been around here before, name Jared Dyke and I've been doing this thing for a little while now. So today i want to talk a little bit about, it's ah it's a subject of old, but um there's still some relevancy, seasons are coming up, so and so forth.

The Halliburton Injury Incident

00:00:23
Jarrod Dyke
And really just some unprofessionalism and then exam there's going to be two parts. Some unprofessionalism, quite frankly. And then exactly how much control does a coach have when it comes to their athletes?
00:00:36
Jarrod Dyke
So first of all, ah there if you haven't seen it or you didn't see it many moons ago when the NBA Finals were occurring and were being played, and it was I believe it was Game 7, where the Indiana Pacers star player Halliburton went down and blew out his Achilles.
00:00:56
Jarrod Dyke
That was just awful, number one. Like, just, ooh, you got to feel for the guy. Eventually, the team lost for obvious reasons.

Controversy Over Training Methods

00:01:05
Jarrod Dyke
and But the aftermath of it came, at least in the strength conditioning world, the aftermath of it was um really an unprofessional bit by Joel Seidman coming in and saying, so showing, stitching in someone else's video that was training. and It was Ben Bruno's video, actually.
00:01:26
Jarrod Dyke
and saying And basically saying all the things that he was doing in the video were the reasons he blew his Achilles out. So calling ah another coach out and saying that this was the reason that this guy blew his Achilles out.
00:01:39
Jarrod Dyke
And yeah, and tagging him and doing it without his permission, the whole McGill. Like just plain and simple.

Control and Influence in Athlete Training

00:01:48
Jarrod Dyke
That's shit. That's horrible.
00:01:51
Jarrod Dyke
There's got to be some integrity in there. And I'm not... personal personally a big fan Seedman anyway and does a lot of for the gram crap and I think it doesn't do the industry any good and just continues to be controversial just for the sake of being controversial not really someone that's helping the move move the industry along so with that It was crap. It was terrible. And a lot of people came to Ben Bruno's defense as they should because Ben's a decent fella. And no, that's how this, what he was doing with this guy was not the reason that Halliburton blows Achilles.
00:02:30
Jarrod Dyke
Can pretty much promise you that. Just because you have a doctor, doctor in front of your name doesn't make you smart. Seidman's the proof. So there's that. I'll, I'll end that there.
00:02:42
Jarrod Dyke
What we can talk about in that though is especially when we're talking about a professional athlete of that sort, how much control does a coach like Ben Bruno really have over this guy?
00:02:56
Jarrod Dyke
And the answer is not that much. I'm sure, and I think the the video that this knucklehead stitched in was also but much older than ah you think.
00:03:08
Jarrod Dyke
So with that though, these, someone like me, or Ben Bruno, or yeah my friend Tony, or whoever, if we are training someone at a pro level, and we're probably training them outside their season, maybe not, depends on depends on what's going on, and yeah know how much control they have, ah and how much say they have of who's training they adapt to, and who's training they adhere to.

Collaboration Between Coaches

00:03:41
Jarrod Dyke
Now, with that... My guess is that Ben Bruno probably has two to three months with this this um this Indiana player, Max, out of the year.
00:03:58
Jarrod Dyke
That's it. And don't sit there and think, well, he doesn't do anything outside of that. He absolutely does. He's absolutely training probably with the team's S&C staff, and they're the ones that see him Every day, they're the ones that look at them every day. they They should be, they're probably ones that are measuring workload and how much, and the minutes and all that stuff.
00:04:19
Jarrod Dyke
It's the NBA Finals also, so minutes might go out the window. Some players are just going to say, I don't care, i'm I'm playing because you want to you want to win. You want to win a title and you're that close. You're going to just probably say, whatever, I'll deal with it next season.
00:04:33
Jarrod Dyke
That type of thing. That happens.
00:04:37
Jarrod Dyke
So, he has probably one the minute management is probably out the window to he's more under the guidance of his professional teams, S and C tap staff and healthcare team and whatever else you wish, whatever other the terms you wish to put to it, that he is under going to be under the training and watch of Ben Bruno. I'm sure Ben is sitting there at home when he, when he sees this guy and is like, yeah, go baby, go, you know, do your thing. And it's just happy to watch him.

Ego and Athlete Health in Coaching

00:05:07
Jarrod Dyke
And, you know, it will anticipate when he comes off and just, Maybe making some notes like, yeah maybe this guy's feeling like this and this looks like it's happening or whatever. But that's a conversation he can have with his his client his athlete later on.
00:05:21
Jarrod Dyke
So really, in the end, to try and, know, try and really just put it to someone like that when they don't actually have that much control over what this person does is, yeah.
00:05:37
Jarrod Dyke
it's pretty ah horrible. So when you see these guys and you think about, oh, they're doing this training with this person, truth be told, not more often than not, most of these athletes are under the guidance and the look, the the watch of team trainers, team strength coaches, team, team physicians, so on so forth for a much longer periods of time than they are under their own strength conditioning coaches and their own, their own personal choices.
00:06:04
Jarrod Dyke
Now that said, I know that, um, There are certain baseball pitchers that get to just write in who they want, what what they want to do and what their workouts should look like.
00:06:15
Jarrod Dyke
And maybe, maybe if these coaches from these professional teams are on the ball and or are really good professionals, they're working with this other, this, you know, these athletes, um their own personal strength coaches. And hopefully those those people are also professional enough to say, all right,
00:06:33
Jarrod Dyke
We want to look out for what's best for this athlete overall.

Negotiating Training Regimens

00:06:38
Jarrod Dyke
We don't want to sit there and, know, just worry about ego and who who who controls what.
00:06:48
Jarrod Dyke
Really, that should be the name of the game. Make sure that these athletes, these people are as healthy as possible throughout their career and work together to make sure of that. And honestly, who gives a damn what where the credit goes?
00:07:00
Jarrod Dyke
And I know that's not how it's always going to work because... that's how people are sometimes, but it really should be that. So that said, I do know that there are some, certain athletes that are, well that are able to negotiate it, whether it's in their contract or just verbally that they get to do a program from someone they trust over what their strength conditioning staff is, has written obviously famously in the past, Tom Brady and his,
00:07:29
Jarrod Dyke
little little sidekick there, Alex Guerrero. That went very sideways, though, because unfortunately, Guerrero was kind of a quack, and it is kind of a quack. So there's goods and bads to that.
00:07:42
Jarrod Dyke
Again, it's more, it would be more, it would have been more, but that situation would have been a good situation where working together would have worked out better instead of butting hands and saying, no, my method's better, no, my method.
00:07:57
Jarrod Dyke
Really, I think we can all agree that There's little tweaks that some people know a little bit better than others. And i I think to marry them together makes some beautiful things happen.
00:08:09
Jarrod Dyke
But again, it's it's just not

Importance of Coach Cooperation

00:08:10
Jarrod Dyke
how people are. they're they They want the credit. They want, that's my person. That's my guy. That's my girl, whatever it is. It's really dumb. And yeah I'll be the first to tell you that if I ever had an athlete that was out there making a name for themselves, I'd love to just say, yeah, I know this guy. He comes in, but at the same time,
00:08:28
Jarrod Dyke
I also just want to really make sure that this athlete, you know, female, male, whatever they are, they're, they're thriving in their career. I don't know. It's, it's the number one thing. So lesson here today, don't go bad-mouthing people and using their, using their stuff to bad-mouth them when you're wrong to make sure that we understand how much time is actually being put in by individual private coaches as opposed to team coaches when it comes to even college, like major college, especially into their, into their programs as opposed to something going on with someone in a private training facility.
00:09:10
Jarrod Dyke
And three perfect world. Both groups work together. College professional team, S and C staff works together with another one saying, all right, here's what's up and dah, dah, dah. And,
00:09:25
Jarrod Dyke
No one says, no, this is me. This is my guy. No, this is my girl. Everyone just says, here's what's up. Let's make sure that we make this happen.

Conclusion and Future Discussions

00:09:33
Jarrod Dyke
I think this is it. I think this is it. Have a freaking conversation with them, even if it's a quick two to three email exchange, as opposed to, you know, just throwing down a wall and saying, no, worst thing possible for any situation of this, of this sort. So that's what I have for today, everyone. I appreciate everyone that's been listening like right along and has,
