Introduction to the Purple Door Podcast

00:00:07
Speaker
Well, hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside Deanne. Deanne, how are you today?
00:00:18
Speaker
I just am finer than a hog's hair. Goodness, I've never heard that phrase before. I don't even know really what it means, but it just popped into my brain. My uncle says that all the time.
00:00:31
Speaker
I guess they have fine hair. ah Maybe, or maybe they have really, really thin thick coarse hair and it's a sarcastic comment which would also go right along with my uncle bill he's a little sarcastic sometimes alright well I like it I don't really know what way it's going but i like it either way yeah that's awesome I love

Settling Back into Routine

00:00:54
Speaker
it. hey How are you doing now? I am wonderful. I, as you know, I've been traveling a bit. We kind of pre-recorded a couple of weeks, but now I'm back, settled in and excited to, you know, woke up this morning, watched an episode, made my notes, and I've been looking forward to recording all day. So glad to be back and in my rhythm.

Southern Idiom Clarification

00:01:16
Speaker
Okay, so I just looked it up. And I know for a fact that my uncle says hogs hair. Right. But do you know what it is that saying is? Finer than a frog hair.
00:01:28
Speaker
And it's a joke. I have never heard that before yeah and I've just learned something. southern It's a humorous southern and Appalachian idiom, meaning you're feeling fantastic, excellent, or in top-notch shape. Which you appear to be. So the as accurate, yes. Accurate, absolutely. But I could have also told you that I am finer than a frog hair split four ways.
00:01:55
Speaker
Goodness me. I know You are providing an education. There you go. But it's Southern and Appalachian. So oh yeah who knew? Who knew? I bet my Uncle Bill did. He did. Well, we tip our hat to Uncle Bill and his use of that idiom. Because, yeah, just learn something new. And every day.

Technical Difficulties and Shout-outs

00:02:20
Speaker
is a school day there you go well let's see before we get started i did re-record a little bit of last week's episode because for some reason my microphone decided to not work for a few minutes so you were kind of asking and answering questions on your own for the first half of bamboozled i bet you that was exciting I bet it was thrilling. Shout out to Steve who got in touch and let us know. So gone back, good old Steve. And, you know, recorded something at the beginning of the episode and then deleted the first you know five minutes of the recording or something. um But this week, hopefully no issues whatsoever and a full bamboozled that we can all enjoy.

Excitement for 'The One with Chandler in a Box'

00:03:10
Speaker
uh we are recording the one a review of the one with chandler in a box an iconic episode and i am looking forward to this oh before we get started i know i sent you a picture but a huge shout out to my friend jonathan boutwell yes mr boutwell when i was back in scotland i did manage to get thanks to my nephew paul hasty shout out to paul Paul!
00:03:35
Speaker
And my Chandler! And he got a Chandler me. I'm so excited. I'm still so excited. They're awesome. They have not been released here. Jonathan printed a 3D Friends Central Park couch for me. So I posted a picture on our socials. ah When this comes out, I will have posted it last week, but it's here over my shoulder and it brings me a ton of joy.
00:04:02
Speaker
It really, really does. So a huge thing thank you to Jonathan. But yeah, it is the one with Chandler in a box, an iconic episode. I'm excited to get into this one with you. um Are you ready for a full length episode of Bamboozled?

Playing 'Bamboozled' Trivia Game

00:04:20
Speaker
Heck yes, I am. All right. Make sure your your microphone's plugged in all the way. It's plugged in you can that That was the weird thing, was you could hear me clearly and I could hear you, but for some reason it just cut off my bit of the recording. um All right, who goes first this week in Bamboozled?
00:04:40
Speaker
Oh, it's going to be you, but can we pause just real quick? We can pause real quick. I'm going to do this. I'm going to do this. Nope. I'm going to do this. I'm going to do this. All right. And we're back. We had a small technical thing. We have paused it. But you said it is me to go first for bamboozled? It is. we got We're on an even episode. It's your turn, sir. All right. Bamboozled for the one with Chandler in a box.
00:05:08
Speaker
Question one. What did Chandler get for Rachel that she claimed a big dog ran off with? Backpack. It is indeed, and you are off to a great start. Yes!
00:05:19
Speaker
Alright, 1-0. We'll listen. How many years is Joey not going to talk to Chandler? Oh, I've got two numbers in my head.
00:05:31
Speaker
I'm going with 7. What was your other number? 5. It is 5! Dang! You get a half a point. Half a point, okay. Because they could have been anything.
00:05:44
Speaker
Yeah, it's funny. Five and seven. It was almost seven years bad luck. That's it, isn't If you break a mirror. So that's what was in the head. That is true. All right. My question two for you is under what shortcut does Monica have Richard's office number saved on her phone? yeah Speed dial number seven. Speaking of seven, speed dial number seven. You are two for two.
00:06:08
Speaker
All right. What's on Monica's apron? My goodness, I have no idea. So I'm going to go. It's so cute. I had to look it up and find it.
00:06:20
Speaker
Okay. I'm going to go with, is a complete shot in the dark? Sunflowers. Oh, that's a great guess. But no, but, oh, I'm not going to say that.
00:06:32
Speaker
um No, it's a Bertoli ad. Which is, it's in a olive oil. It's an Italian olive oil advertisement. And it's, is she's so cute. It's this little, like, 19, don't know, whenever they had, like, the little, like, curl up here on the top of the head. Right. And then the curl... And there's some like where the girl is like a bombshell, but then there's this girl and she's like in a cute little like apron dress thing. And she's holding her little bottle of Bertoli.
00:07:05
Speaker
And can you buy it? Like, does this exist? The ad? Yes. yeah Yeah, or like the apron, I wonder. Can you get the I imagine you can just get it printed on it. Yeah, I suppose so. there's all But it like the olive oil the Italian olive oil ads, it's a whole thing. All right. It is a whole thing. It's a whole thing. I'm going to need to deep dive that. it sounds oh I'll just send you the link.
00:07:31
Speaker
Please. Thank you. Yes, you're welcome. All right. So let's see if you can get three for three here. Okay. How long did we find out Joey was stuck in the entertainment center for?
00:07:46
Speaker
Six hours. so You are three for three. Six hours indeed. Strong, strong start. Okay. What radio station?
00:07:58
Speaker
does Chandler pretend to be whenever he keeps calling Chan or Joey at the beginning I think I know this because I went back and listened to it is it something like WKRK yeah yeah because it was WXRK but yeah okay yeah K-Rock Cave Rock. that was that was because i remember them saying Cave Rock and I thought I'm going to go back and listen to see yeah if the the the call letters, whatever they're called, line up.
00:08:29
Speaker
Alright, I'm going to need you to get this wrong. um But let's see. this Good luck! Ask me a hard one! hard one! It's a five-parter.
00:08:41
Speaker
it's a five-parter Oh, crud. Okay. But i've I've got faith in you. When everyone is giving Monica a hard time about seeing Timothy, she fires one shot at each one of the friends. and Can you tell me the five insults?
00:08:55
Speaker
Married a lesbian. Yes. Left a guy at the altar. Yes. Living in a box. That's three out five. Married a gay ice dancer.
00:09:07
Speaker
You are four out of five. That's at least half a point. The insult to Joey is a big part of a previous episode. I don't know.
00:09:19
Speaker
I don't know what she said to Joey. She said, threw a girl's wooden leg in the fire. Dang! At least half a point. At least half a point for that. oh ah Nice um work. A solid four out of five in that question alone. Nice job.
00:09:39
Speaker
Okay, thank you. but that i don't know that might i would i would accept a half a point all right but i don't have to even accept any no you've got at least at least at least if we could do three quarters of a point you would no but we'll do half a point no good no good good all right i need to get this right um yes you do all right uh what does the magna doodle say Oh, does it say, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry a thousand times? Yes. It sure does. I didn't write that down, but I vaguely remember. see Just seeing it in the background, i thought I'm going to need to pay attention to that. Uh-huh.
00:10:19
Speaker
All right. This could be a tricky question. You either saw it or you didn't. When Monica, well, or you might be able to figure out, when Monica and Timothy are on the balcony, what does Timothy have with them that's a throwback to Richard?
00:10:35
Speaker
A cigar. Matt, look at you. i thought that was going to trip you up. A cigar. Indeed. I didn't see it the first time, and then I re-watched the scene and saw it. Nice Okay. But, to be fair, a whole lot of that scene was apparently cut out.
00:10:53
Speaker
So I saw a lot more of that. so ah you dad Well, I'm excited to hear what I missed. Yeah. There was a lot of stuff cut from this scene i this episode. I thought there might have been having a quick look online. yeah You have run away with this. I've got one question left, but this is just for honor and pride. so let's see what happens. Okay. All right. Let's see here. What? um Okay.
00:11:20
Speaker
I've got three more questions. okay Would you like me to ask you one, two, or three? Let's let's go with three. Okay. What's on the box?
00:11:33
Speaker
Oh, does it say fragile? It does. It does. Okay. Yes. Nice. All right. Excellent. You've got two left for me. i just have one more for you. So why don't you fire a question this way?
00:11:50
Speaker
Okay, wait. Wait, did i did um did I answer five? Oh, you have answered five. You ran away with this. You have won by four and a half points to three and a half points. Nice.
00:12:01
Speaker
Yes. So okay this season you are winning three-one after multiple ties. Okay. All right. How many characters wear an apron and who are they?
00:12:18
Speaker
that's a Well, we know Monica wears one. mm-hmm chandler ross and joey none of them are wearing one does rachel where why would she wear one this is a this is a good i'm trying because it can't just be one because it's thanksgiving oh phoebe i'm gonna go with two because she does some cooking Very good. There we go. Yes. Good job. My last one for you is who does Rachel say Monica is saving the towels for?
00:12:52
Speaker
The Pope. The Pope indeed. yeah The Pope indeed. And then you've got one more. i do. What beer is Ross drinking? We've seen it before. Okay, is it Red Stripe?
00:13:05
Speaker
It is. Yes, okay. we Yeah, we've seen that before. All right, well done. A solid, solid run from you. I got off to a slow start and then just couldn't catch up. So well done.
00:13:17
Speaker
All right, let's get into this

Chandler's DJ Prank Calls

00:13:20
Speaker
episode. We're going to start off in the boys' apartment. Liza, I think there's a lot of stuff that I had cut out that you didn't. so Yeah, because i have i I had first one of the questions that I had was, how many times does Joey call Chandler?
00:13:37
Speaker
And of mine was cut. And so I was like, oh, I can't. I'm not going to ask that. Yeah, this, I just got the Chandler. He keeps calling Joey.
00:13:49
Speaker
Joey hangs up the phone every time until Chandler pretends to be a radio DJ, but catches on. I was curious if you've ever like won a radio contest or another sort of contest like that. No, no, I haven't. But one time i did call in and make a request. Right. Yeah.
00:14:09
Speaker
And so they played my voice whenever they played my song. That's quite exciting. I agree. it was very exciting. That's very cool. Yeah. Y'all have all kinds of contests.
00:14:23
Speaker
I feel like between you and Kate, I feel like lots of contests have been won on your part. I'm trying to, now that i'm thinking about it, can't think of a single thing, but we've definitely, we definitely have won bits and pieces. Yeah.
00:14:39
Speaker
Whenever we were at Bell, you won a radio, like a church radio thing. Yeah, Christian. re I was nominated for like teacher of the month and they showed up with a big, like a banner and a gift. It was super cool. yeah So cool. yeah And see, it made an impression.
00:14:59
Speaker
I remembered. You remember? Yeah, that was cool. No, I couldn't remember if you called in or what happened. But I knew you were on the radio and you won. I ended up being recorded for the radio. Yeah, I had no idea what was happening. They just they showed up to a meeting after school with bells and whistles. and and it It was fantastic. It was really, really cool and humbling thing. yeah um Yeah, I've won a couple of things. I've won a like hiking backpack fairly recently. oh i won the handwritten lyrics to a song I love by one of my favorite bands, which is on the board behind me. What song?
00:15:43
Speaker
So it is, well, let's see. In fact, it's got... It's actually got several songs. The band is Top House. um And I entered a contest through their Instagram and somebody was going to win where they'd been scribbling lyrics down.
00:15:59
Speaker
um But the Mountain Song is a song that I love. Amongst many of theirs, they're one the few bands when they come to town, I will absolutely go and see them. and We have tickets to see them in October, I think.
00:16:16
Speaker
Nice. So yeah yeah, lots and lots of fun. um But yeah, Chandler pretends to be this radio DJ from, what did you say, WXRK? Was that it? Yes, I did. K-Rock for our $1,000 daily challenge. And ah Joey falls for it for just a minute until Chandler says, you know, kind of blows his own cover and Joey hangs up. Was there any more to that scene? And then the phone rings again And he answers it and he's like, i told you to stop calling. And it's Ross.
00:16:52
Speaker
Nice. And he goes, hi. And then he's like, oh, hi, Ross. And he's like, yeah, well. And he's like, so how are you doing? And he's like, good. these's I was just calling to let you know that Chandler is really, really sorry. And then Joey hangs up. so Nice. An extra little bit added.
00:17:14
Speaker
Yes, yes. Not necessary, but joe erv I feel like Ross is hardly in this episode. Right. And so, ah they but they cut even more, like, out of him. They cut out an an entire scene that. had in there And we'll get to that in a minute. All right. Well, let's we'll keep moving forward. I'm interested to hear about that. We go over to the girls apartment. Chandler, as we know, he hates Thanksgiving food.

Secret Santa and Chandler's Gift Plans

00:17:42
Speaker
um Joey's still not talking to him.
00:17:46
Speaker
And Joey, I think Rachel ken says, oh, you've been trying to call him a lot. You must need one of those plug in phone headsets. um And then she and Ross just pick up where they've left off recently, start arguing again. i do quite like the line about, you know, should we all expect a gift that could be stolen from your office? You shouldn't.
00:18:07
Speaker
I do quite like that line from Rachel. yeah And this is where Phoebe, I think, suggests Secret Santa. I can't remember if it's this scene or if it's a different scene. i Googled this to make sure. ah Ross says, I think, to to to Phoebe, already got Monica something for Hanukkah.
00:18:29
Speaker
I think that's the first time that it's revealed that they're Jewish, I think. Wait, wait, wait, wait. That could be it ah in a later scene. I didn't write down where that was. Yeah, I don't even remember that.
00:18:44
Speaker
So that's weird. But, like, right here, this scene, I guess it ended with the... um Whenever Phoebe's, like, explaining... um Yeah, whenever Phoebe's explaining what Secret Santa is, and we'd be the only, we' only have to buy one gift.
00:19:02
Speaker
um and Right. And then it's the Adam mystery of who gets who. And then Ross is like, who gets whom? I don't know why I do that. and Yeah. But then comes in. but then joey comes in And then he tries to turn around and leave. he He walks in and then he sees Chandler and he tries to leave and they're like, wait, wait, wait, don't go.
00:19:26
Speaker
and so then Joey comes over like to the table and Ross is doing something at the table. um and And then they have like this really weird exchange about you know telling Joey he can't just leave and all of this and then Joey leaves.
00:19:45
Speaker
Then it then it moves on to later. Okay. Like when they're watching the parade. Okay. Yeah. Cause that's, I'm missing that whole section. Yeah.
00:19:56
Speaker
and But like it was a, and it was a very Ross heavy, like I couldn't even follow kind of what was happening and I don't, I don't know why. i think I don't know. Joseph, somebody around me had said something, but Ross says something. And I was like, i don't even understand that joke.
00:20:17
Speaker
Like, I don't understand what happened. But they were trying to get Joey to stay and telling him you can't be mad forever and blah, blah, blah. Interesting. Yeah, all cut out for me. Because the next thing I've got Chandler reaching like you just alluded to watching the Thanksgiving Day Parade.
00:20:33
Speaker
um The turkey, even though she's sitting in the other room, is making Rachel tired. She decides to go for a nap. And Chandler wants Rachel in secret Santa because he's already got a briefcase with her initials on it.
00:20:49
Speaker
um which it hadn't really dawned on me that Rachel's initials are, of course, the same as ross Okay. And they cut out a really funny line, like right there, whenever he says, yeah you know, I've already got RG put in on it.
00:21:07
Speaker
And then Phoebe's like, and he's like, her initials? And she's like, oh, well, I'm really bad at initials. and you know and then they And it was just kind of a weird, but they cut it.
00:21:22
Speaker
so Right, yeah. It's interesting what they've cut in this episode. but Phoebe doesn't want to trade for Rachel because she exchanges every gift she gets.
00:21:33
Speaker
And this is where they talk... um Yeah, they talk about the backpack that Chandler got her, and she was so upset when the big dog, which apparently is Rachel's go-to story when she returns something.
00:21:47
Speaker
um But we saw we move over to Monica. I guess she's chipping ice out the freezer. Something like that, right? I couldn't quite catch what she was doing. And then some evidently flies up, gets her right in the eye, and um it hurts a lot, evidently. I don't think I've ever done that, but it does sound like it would be pretty painful.
00:22:11
Speaker
Yeah, but it seems very dramatic, right? Right. right I felt like it was... Joseph was laughing. He was like, uh, ice.
00:22:21
Speaker
And, um, yeah, I'm But it was just silly, you know? like yeah Yeah, I guess they they needed something to happen to get this storyline on the go because she needs to go and see her eye doctor. Her eye doctor is Richard, so the last thing she... Although I do like that line, I can't go and see Richard without a boyfriend. guess he's really picky about his patients. But she doesn't want to go and see him. um So Phoebe calls and the on-call doctor is available, which is which appears to be good news for Monica.
00:22:56
Speaker
yeah um And I think I may have written this later on in my notes, but i do think it's really odd that there's an on-call doctor on Thanksgiving. It's not like it's an emergency room.
00:23:09
Speaker
And there's also a receptionist there. to me, it's all a little odd. But that's just me. Like if I called optometrist. i was going to say, I wonder if eye doctors are on-call or not.
00:23:24
Speaker
Because like dentists, r That's true. That's true. i wonder how that felt. If you did something, some damage to your eye, it's a very good point.
00:23:35
Speaker
yeah Yeah, because like at the yeah er if you do something to your tooth, the ER r won't do anything with it. They're all like, sorry. If they don't have a dentist in their emergency room, they won't have anything to do with you.
00:23:50
Speaker
interesting i didn't know that right ah yes it's that old thing about who decided that like the teeth and the eyes were separate yeah you know yeah it's a funny thing well and yeah it's weird right like huh and they have like an ear nose and throat but those aren't Yeah, that is weird because like ear, to nose and throat, like that's a specialist. I have to have a referral to go to that, but I don't have to have a referral to go to the eye doctor.
00:24:25
Speaker
i don't have to have a referral to go to. Yeah. Weird. Insurance sucks. But anyway, we could do a whole episode on ah that without a doubt. How much would an on-call eye doctor appointment cost?
00:24:45
Speaker
Right. Especially for an out-of-work chef, basically, at this point. Right. yeah Who just said they needed... Well, okay.
00:24:59
Speaker
I wonder if Richard charges her. That's a very good point. so very well we'll never know bet he didn't we will never yeah dun dun dun that's right one of the mysteries she wouldn't pay the bill anyway this is probably it yeah yeah um i've got in the next scene we're still in the girl's apartment phoebe's cooking she's not following the recipe she's just you know it's the butter she puts like half in right and then tips the rest in
00:25:32
Speaker
Okay, but before that, okay, so you know Phoebe calls on the phone and gets her the appointment, you know? Yes. Because she yeah ah he's out of town, but do you want to see the on-call doctor? She's very excited about that. then right after that, Rachel and Phoebe and then Chandler, they're all standing there.
00:25:54
Speaker
And then Chandler's like, okay, so who's going to take her? ah and rachel And Rachel looks at him and she goes, I'll take her. You can watch your parade.
00:26:06
Speaker
And he goes, thanks. And then he like jumps into the chair and like puts his legs over the side and is watching the parade. That's kind of fantastic.
00:26:17
Speaker
It's sweet. I like it. rachel yeah Yeah. I'll take her so you can watch your parade. hmm. Good for her. It's actually this next scene. I found my notes where I said this is the first episode where Ross and Monica, you know, we discover they're Jewish because he says, so this is it.

Joey's Confrontation and Moving Out

00:26:34
Speaker
Because after the recipe, um i think Chandler comes in. He thinks he's making some progress with Joey because I think he only slammed the door once, although he did give him the finger. um but then Chandler and Ross are discussing trading secret centre that's it Ross has already got Monica something for Hanukkah and then Ross kind of finds out that instead of this gold necklace being taken by a big dog that he got Rachel last year she did in fact exchange it which is going to really you know boil up into something later on in this episode
00:27:13
Speaker
Yes, yes. The next scene, kind of heartbreaking, I thought, when you go we go to the boys' apartment and Joey's packing his bags to move out. He's going to go stay at his parents' house while he looks for a new place.
00:27:26
Speaker
um He's packing up all the stuff that Chandler's bought, except for the TV, which he put into his room. um Oh, he's not packing yet, is he? Sorry, that's coming up No, he's packing up all this stuff. That's right, he's packing this stuff. He packs his stuff after he sees him and Kathy together.
00:27:43
Speaker
That's right. Yeah, he just can't cope with it. he's And he's going to punish him for five years. Right. um That's right. ross And Ross is now his best friend because there's an opening. I do love that little exchange. And then to his credit, I think Ross handles this beautifully well by you know saying as you your new best friend, this is what I'm going to have you do.
00:28:08
Speaker
He's going to get him to talk to Chandler. yes so whenever we go the next scene the next scene whenever we're over in central park and chandler and kathy are sitting at the table yeah and they're talking to each other and chandler you know is obviously telling her how terrible it is with the two of them you know or how how much joey will not talk talk to him um but She says, and like the thing, it looks like it was cut out where she says to Chandler, I really feel like it's all my fault.
00:28:46
Speaker
And then, um you know, then it cuts over to Joey and he's asking if he's seen Chandler. right and and then gunther's response i thought you were chandler i thought you were chandler yes that was so funny but it's it's a great line and i love those kind of lines where if he had just said oh he's over there we wouldn't have batted an eyelid yes just such a clever bit of writing that yes gosh and the delivery of it like gunther is so
00:29:22
Speaker
I don't even know what the word is. Dry and hilarious yeah and it just awesome. All of it. yeah um I did do a little digging into Joey because he ah he goes, Vaffanapoli, and then storms out.
00:29:38
Speaker
Did you look it up? I did indeed look it up. I didn see thought you might. Tell me out whenever. Afanapoli. I knew Napoli was a city, is a city in Italy. So I thought, I wonder if they've just made something up.
00:29:52
Speaker
But not really. Because it is a Tuscan insult. Afanapoli means essentially go to napoli and go to Naples, which translates kind of like go to hell.
00:30:05
Speaker
Yes. To the Tuscans. So it's really, really interesting that they've used a kind of deep track insult from Italy that not many people would get. It's a regional insult.
00:30:17
Speaker
Yes. And they use it multiple times throughout the episode. Yeah. Rachel says it right. Yeah, she does. Yeah. and Yeah. My just fun fact. Fun fact. My dad was stationed in Naples whenever he was in the military. He worked at the NATO base in Italy. Yeah.
00:30:39
Speaker
What a fun connection that is. I know. So then whenever we were there last summer, we did not go to Naples, but I did suggest multiple times that we go to Napoli. Right.
00:30:50
Speaker
And he said, nah. He's been been there, done that. Yeah. Nah. No, no desire. Yeah. Yep. I said, okay. We go over to the doctor's office and this is where Monica finds out that the on-call doctor is Timothy. I do like Rachel's line about thinking that he's so cute she wants to jab a pen in her eye.
00:31:14
Speaker
Okay. Yes, go ahead. what How long was that? Like that part right there. Whenever she says, oh, so cute. I'm thinking, or oh, so cute i'm that I'm thinking about jamming this pen in my eye. I think after that line, it was the receptionist then said, Dr. Buck, we'll see you now.
00:31:34
Speaker
So they're sitting there, right, on that couch. And Jennifer Aniston breaks character. right she she says that and then ah but Courtney Cox starts laughing.
00:31:48
Speaker
Like, giggling. So then Jennifer Aniston, like, it was it was so funny because it was such a real like moment between the two of them. Right.
00:32:00
Speaker
ah Where they are both laughing, but it was weird because you could tell, like, she totally broke character. and Like, it was hysterical. And then...
00:32:12
Speaker
ah Monica said something else I didn't type it in but I was I just I put stars all around it and I was like laughing because it was so funny and then Joseph goes I don't think that was supposed to happen and I was like I don't think so either I think because there were there was another line that they kind of said to each other is that Kate?
00:32:35
Speaker
It is saw you making an eyes at her I was trying to say goodbye with my eyes. She was sitting on the other desk. Busted. Busted. She's just left to go. I cant um i can tell. Out of the eyebrows, they go way up. And he looking at Kate like, hey, lady. That's right. It's funny, I forget she's there. I mean, she's literally was sitting four feet from me. But the way my screen is, I can't see her at all.
00:33:06
Speaker
So suddenly she just emerges from behind my screen, especially with these on the headphones. I cannot, the can't see her, can't hear her. yes she she i get I can always tell whenever she is around though because your your eyebrows change in your eyes like i you love your wife so much she's pretty awesome cute she is awesome she is she is but I thought that was cute so anyway the two of them are like it's just so funny and then Joseph's like I don't think that was supposed to happen
00:33:43
Speaker
Right. like No, probably not. Yeah, Jennifer Aniston, we've talked about this, notoriously covers her mouth when she breaks. um So I might need to go and look at this, look at that scene, I think that would be funny. Funny to see. Yeah, I kind of mentioned this, but i think the whole thing, it's like the office is just open, like it's a normal day, even though it's Thanksgiving Day, which I find...
00:34:09
Speaker
Peculiar, but but maybe they're the one office in the area that is open and obviously Dr. Bark Jr. wasn't just there seeing patients. So, and you' packter packed a quick thanksgiving Thanksgiving dinner, as we find out, a little brown bag dinner.
00:34:26
Speaker
um which we'll get to. We go over to the boys' apartment. Joey, this is... this It really made me really sad seeing him. Like, I believed him when he was talking about packing up and leaving, going to stay with his parents.
00:34:40
Speaker
Chandler comes in and, like, tries to get him to stay... And I find this scene so good because he's kind of funny. Like, you should stay for them. They had a rough year. The robbery and all, talking about the barns. Yeah. And then also when he grabs the bag out of Joey's hand, it's like serious physical acting.
00:34:59
Speaker
Yeah. Like it goes back and forth really quickly. It's so well done. And this is where cha or Joey says, you know, when I got stuck at the entertainment center for what was it? Six hours. You know what I was doing? And then Chandler says, if he still had it, he'd get in there for six hours.
00:35:16
Speaker
And Joey has a brilliant idea. the They have a box. They have a box. Yeah. Yeah. We're back over in the doctor's office. Of course, again, jump in with any deleted scenes. Timothy and Monica are kind of reminiscing about when they last saw each other. I did wonder how quickly it took them to realize who each other is. Surely, they like when he came in, would he not have known that was Monica from her richer days, if not before?
00:35:43
Speaker
You would think so, You would think When she and Richard were dating, surely at some point they saw each other. Her name came up. But she finds out, Monica finds out he's just broken up with his girlfriend and has packed his dinner in a brown paper bag.
00:36:01
Speaker
And it's all going to get a little weird after that. Back in the girls' apartment, Monica has invited Timothy over for dinner and everyone thinks it's weird, it's twisted, it's just kind of wrong. Ew!
00:36:15
Speaker
Ew, ew, ew! 100%. Yeah, Joey's reaction is the best, isn't it? Yes. Chandler at this point is in the box. Yes, but they moved to the box over to the girls' apartment so that he can be a part of things. Yeah, I did think that was quite good on Joey's part. He didn't just leave Chandler over in the apartment by himself. They brought him over. but And Chandler, I don't know why I love it so much. Chandler explains, the meaning of the box is threefold.
00:36:45
Speaker
And I was going to ask you what those things were. To think about what he did to prove his friendship to Joey. And it hurts. Those the three reasons. um and this is We descend into the Ross and Rachel saga again because he asked to see the gold necklace that he bought her last year.
00:37:05
Speaker
She brings it out, kind of moving it around a lot. Right, because it's completely the wrong color. Yeah. Okay, I have a question. What's the question?
00:37:17
Speaker
How many necklaces would you say that Kate has? That's a great question. She doesn't wear many.
00:37:31
Speaker
But, you know, she's probably got some that she's not worn in years, but will always keep because they match something or go with something. Right. Not many, though. I'm going to go with Seven. Wow. Okay. yeah How about you?
00:37:49
Speaker
I couldn't even begin to count. And I never wear necklaces. Right. Ever. But I have... Al, I have... I want to tell you about something crazy that I did last week. I am ready for it. Are you?
00:38:05
Speaker
Are you? okay So... um my ears i have a ridiculous amount of earrings also okay and i was looking for a token and i'll tell you about it another time i can't imagine my dad is going to listen to this podcast but in the event that he does i don't want to tell you what i was looking for understood Okay, so I was, I have been meaning to look for this thing for a while. And my brother texted me the other night and was like, hey, you know, don't forget you want to look for that. And I was like, oh, so I started going through all of my jewelry and things. And I realized I have a ridiculous number of necklaces and earrings and
00:38:56
Speaker
um A ridiculous amount. and And so that scene, anyway, so then i i my ear holes had, or one of my ear holes had completely closed up and then the other one had almost closed up. um And so I have been saying for at least six months, probably longer that I want to get my ear ears repierced. got frustrated that night and after I found what I was looking for, i went ahead and i repierced my ears.
00:39:26
Speaker
Right. All by myself. Look at you go. In my kitchen. Yikes. That's not true. In my bathroom, walking to my kitchen, back to my bathroom in my bedroom and freaking ah everybody and out in my house. Yeah. But i have earrings on. Look at you go.
00:39:44
Speaker
And my ears don't even hurt. They're not even infected. What? Look at you go. Safe and sterile. okay I'm just saying. But... While I was doing that, I was thinking, oh like ah why do I have so much jewelry and I don't wear much jewelry ever?
00:40:04
Speaker
um And so this scene really irritated me because I was like, you cannot tell me that Rachel Green does not have a gold chain. Very good point. You cannot tell me because I feel like everybody has a gold chain and a silver chain at the very least. Well, like but apparently maybe not. Maybe not because I just texted Kate who's in the other room. She says she owns maybe two to three necklaces.
00:40:33
Speaker
That's it. Ask her how many chains she has. Like if she has a silver chain and a gold chain. I am asking her right now. Beautiful. Yes, we will. i'll Do you own jewelry?
00:40:47
Speaker
I own two rings that I wear all the time. um I think that's it. i mean, I've got a couple of sets of cufflinks. I've got a necktie. That's not jewelry. No, that is not jewelry. Not a necktie, tie clip.
00:41:04
Speaker
um It's not jewelry, really. sentimental. That's kind of like a boy, like you know a tie clip and cufflinks. yeah I feel like those kinds of things. It's kind of like jewelry. Yeah, I've got my wedding ring and then um another ring that Kate got me, which has... Don't you wear bracelets?
00:41:26
Speaker
Oh, you know, yeah, I've got a leather one and then kind of ropey material one. Yeah. um The leather one we got at Disney and we got our initials put on it last year. Yeah, it's got our initials and the year 25 and a little tiny Mickey. So we're always carrying a little hidden Mickey, you see, on a you see I love that. You see? but that's it. Yeah. So we're going get too sidetracked. Obviously, the wedding ring. When I was 18, my godmother gave me a ring that had the logo of Rangers, my football or soccer team on it. It got stolen. And years, years ago, before Kate and I were married, a house I was living in got broken into. And they stole that. Monetarily not really worth anything at all, but it was huge sentimental value. So for years I didn't have it, and then Kate bought me another one with the logo on it um as a gift, as a replacement. So these, the ah I'm not against ever having more, but that's...
00:42:30
Speaker
That's it for me on this end. um yeah rachel Ross figures out pretty quickly, you know, that the gold didn't just fall off or didn't just change or whatever it was Rachel said and gives her a pretty hard time.
00:42:44
Speaker
um Everyone likes Timothy at this point, but Phoebe says it's just all too weird. um Chandler knocks on the box to trace people into thinking that there's somebody at the door. That was so funny. Yeah, again, so simple, but so funny. um Ross and Rachel start to descend into another argument with Timothy at the table, even though they have company, like Monica says. Rachel storms off and goes to get um a box.
00:43:14
Speaker
and She brings the box. I was going to ask you what the things were in the box. Oh, yeah. We see three things. Okay, so there's the bone that she took, the eggshell.
00:43:26
Speaker
Yep.
00:43:30
Speaker
And the movie ticket. That's it. Okay, so on the commentary thing, they talked about those those three things.
00:43:41
Speaker
Not a whole lot of all three, but they did spend a lot of time talking about that movie ticket. right Because they were talking about, like, there was a lot of thwarted dates, you know, before they actually went on a date.
00:43:56
Speaker
right And then they were like, did they ever go to the movies? And then they went into this big thing because, you know, then we were talking about, we were like, okay, so they they definitely went to the planetarium.
00:44:08
Speaker
yeah But i that I don't think was their first date. it was sort I think it was meant to be their first date, but then he got stuck at work. Oh, no, that wasn't their first date. No, that wasn't.
00:44:23
Speaker
So we don't know. yeah i don't think. But they were talking about how they do, because I guess the commentary was recorded during the ninth season, because they talk about the dynamic between that, how ironic this thing is with Chandler, Joey and Kathy.
00:44:45
Speaker
And then the conversation that happens between Rachel Ross and ah Joey. And how interesting it is because of the dynamic and what was happening in season nine.
00:44:59
Speaker
Interesting. And so then they said that they make, and she was like, you know, I don't know that we ever show that Ross and Rachel on their first date at the movies. And then They talked about the museum date and then she's like, well, um sometimes yeah or shes she talked about people will really dive in and be, you know, point out whenever they make a mistake like this, but they're okay with making small adjustments for the sake of a story. And this would be one that for the sake of a story because you don't really know.
00:45:40
Speaker
You know, right. And I thought that was interesting. I've just and I don't know why i thought that was interesting, but I did. But the fact that they acknowledged the inconsistencies. Yeah, there are inconsistencies. I mean, obviously throughout its TV show and that's fine. But yeah, when they do it for a reason to create a new story, I think that kind of, that works out fine. um I do like Ross's little few lines about the fact that she's really not supposed to take that bone You know, there's people looking for that. i do like that. Oh, Kate owns one chain, by the way. Okay. a One chain. Is it gold or silver or both?
00:46:22
Speaker
It is. It doesn't say. It doesn't say. I guess what the world may never know. It may never know. It may never know. We go on to the balcony. Timothy and Monica, they're kind of flirting at this point. that I re-watched the scene and noticed that had the cigar. um They're both trying to just ignore the whole Richard thing. They're saying that's separate. They start to kiss. Monica pulls away.
00:46:48
Speaker
obviously reminded her of Richard and that's going to be the end of things pretty quickly for Monica and Tim. There's no coming back from that.
00:46:59
Speaker
um Okay, so while they are while they were out on the balcony and um and she's she tells Tim, you know, you allll think and that, or you know, all my friends think this is weird. yeah And then um He's like, even the one in the box, which I thought was so funny. And then she was like, yeah.
00:47:26
Speaker
um And then they start talking about, is it weird? And then she says, you know, they they have like a little side conversation about being weird. And then Tim says, you know, I thought it was going to be weird. I mean, I almost called and canceled, but it really isn't.
00:47:42
Speaker
And she's like, I know. but then, and this whole time, this whole time, um he's holding the cigar.
00:47:53
Speaker
Like, during that whole exchange, which you don't see. So, that's why I knew that he had the cigar. Yeah, I think I only saw it on the... um Like, with the ashtray on the ledge.
00:48:07
Speaker
I think that's the only... yeah time i so Certainly all the time I caught it, yeah, um even if it was elsewhere. um We go over to the... We're back inside the girls' apartment.
00:48:22
Speaker
Kathy comes over, and it's kind of heartbreaking. She came over to tell Chandler that she's going to go to Chicago... to be with her mum, spend a little time there and think about everything that's kind of gone down, everything that's happening. She doesn't want to be the one that's going to cause all this drama.
00:48:41
Speaker
And then Chandler, heartbreaking, waves her good but goodbye to her with the one finger out the box. That that's that breaks Joey. Joey's like, get out the box. We're going to be fine. Everything's going to be okay.
00:48:55
Speaker
I didn't quite catch the fact that that was his secret Santa gift to Chandler. Oh, yeah. the box didn't It didn't quite land with me until I watched it this time. I was like, ah, that's the gift.
00:49:09
Speaker
And tells him to go and chase her down the street. And that's how we can end this episode, on the balcony. And they're watching Chandler chase Kathy, but then they realize they've misidentified them. It's actually somebody getting mugged. and i can't remember who is now i think it's joey runs and calls the police he does he does before they do

Episode Analysis and Next Episode Tease

00:49:30
Speaker
see chandler and kathy i think at the end he catches her and that's how it it kind of wraps up okay so you want to hear a couple of of such things that i learned by watching the commentary i am on the edge of my seat i know you are
00:49:47
Speaker
So they had originally planned that that goodbye scene whenever he ran after her was actually going to be in a train station. But it was too expensive to do.
00:49:59
Speaker
So they decided to do it ah from the balcony. And so what it is is the camera is actually on the floor with the wide angle lens.
00:50:10
Speaker
Right. And they have a fan. Oh, nice. That's it. So I was like, wow, that was pretty clever. Yeah.
00:50:21
Speaker
The other thing that they talked about, they talked about, um so Chandler is inside of that box the entire time. Like Matthew Perry is inside of that box. Right. And so one of the big concerns that they had whenever they very first like came up with this was if Matthew Perry was claustrophobic or not.
00:50:42
Speaker
Because they didn't want him, like, want to stop and let him out often. Right. They didn't want to do that. So they never let him out. Like, once he got in, he was in until they were done. That's crazy.
00:50:56
Speaker
Yes. Right. And then that that end part, whenever, um and they then as it turns out, Matthew Perry was not claustrophobic at all.
00:51:07
Speaker
He had no problem with it. And he was actually very comfortable sitting in the box. Which is interesting all by itself. And they said that it probably helped because of where that hole was.
00:51:19
Speaker
It let light in. So he was able to see out and people were able to see in. right so that, you know, that was a good thing. um And so like the finger, like whenever the finger comes out and everything, like those are Matthew Perry's fingers. right And they went back and forth about whether or not they wanted him to wave goodbye with one finger or with two fingers or how many fingers they wanted him to have out. And they decided that the one looked the saddest.
00:51:50
Speaker
it dan You could feel the sadness. It And then they were talking about that, um how yeah you know how do you act with a finger but but yeah his fingers kind of shaking when he's doing like he put he he does well so good um and then ah okay the claustrophobic stuff and then i don't know there was something else it'll pop in my brain i'm sure I'm sure it will.
00:52:21
Speaker
Well, let's see. while we Well, that pops into your brain. who would be your Gunther Central Park for this episode? Chandler. Chandler. Yeah, easy. Yeah. Easy.
00:52:32
Speaker
Solid choice. Although not who I've gone with, but solid choice. I think I would have, there's just something about Joey that I i liked.
00:52:43
Speaker
I just, I've never seen Matt LeBlanc, I think, act so seriously. Like when he's mad with Chandler, I'm like, I completely buy this. Yeah. And then he can switch to being funny and switch to being serious. Like I just, there was something about Joey that spoke to me.
00:53:00
Speaker
But it was really the way Joey and Chandler played off each other. So it's quite nice we've picked either side of that. Oh, they talked about, and I'm like, absolutely. But they also talked a lot about the um that this was the first time that they like, and well, and but that's not true because Janice has been in here.
00:53:23
Speaker
But they they talked about Kathy and oh, maybe it was Joey. Like it was the first time that Joey had had like a... But then she had they had the the alien girl, the alien play girl.
00:53:38
Speaker
Yes. It took me second remember. Yes. um Yeah. And that went over a couple of different um episodes. so She was never in the apartment, was she?
00:53:50
Speaker
No, they always went to hers. Yeah. But... and But like, ah but anyway, they were talking about how Joey and Chandler are, um they they couldn't make the girlfriend stay for too long because um they they talked about what a wonderful actress she was and the chemistry between her and Chandler and, you know, and all of that. But nobody,
00:54:21
Speaker
liked that relationship because it messed with joey and chandler 100 and they could not have they could they said you could tell that like everybody was way more concerned about joey and chandler getting back together right isn't that interesting and i was like that's sweet you know and they talked about the depth of of that friendship and how um What a big deal it was it is. you know that's I hadn't quite thought of it from that angle.
00:54:54
Speaker
that's it That's really interesting. That was sweet. What do we want to measure? we could add you know Ice chips? Big boxes? What do you think we should measure? I have boxes written down. Then boxes it be. Wooden crates, boxes. Where are you going to land on this week's episode?
00:55:11
Speaker
Pretty high, Al. I'm going be honest. This is a nine boxes situation for me. I'm not mad about that decision at all because I've come in at eight and a half and it was almost a nine. i was There you go.
00:55:25
Speaker
There you go. It's good stuff. Good stuff. Yeah, this this is a... i think it's I think it's really well known for the whole Chandler being in the box scene when Kathy comes. I think that's the main the main thing people remember. Certainly I did from this episode. But just... I mean, I don't buy the Timothy storyline, things like that. But I think just the Chandler, Joey, and then Kathy dynamic, I think is really strong in this episode. Makes it really solid.
00:55:56
Speaker
Yes. Yeah, it's good. Awesome. Well, let's see next next week, the one where they're going to party. Next week, which which will be fun to review. Do you have any final thoughts before we wrap up today?
00:56:15
Speaker
This is just such a great episode, and I have so enjoyed talking with you about it. Thank you. As have I with you. And I think it's kind of like a sleeper one. Like it is. It's a great episode, but not one I think would make necessarily a lot of like, if you ask people their favorite friends episode. ah Yeah. I think this one kind of flies under the radar, but really, really solid, I think.
00:56:39
Speaker
Yes. And um i would also like to point out very low on the Ross. Again, think we're going to be looking at this throughout the rest of our reviews. I feel like there's pattern here. It is. I agree.
00:56:54
Speaker
Well, fantastic. Well, like we said, next week it is the one where they're going to party. But as always, thank you, everybody out there, for listening to the Purple Door podcast.
