Here we go. I'm not sure what I'm doing, which is another way of saying I'm learning. I'm opening up, I'm going within myself, and I'm inviting you along for the journey.

Setting the Scene

00:00:00
Speaker
Hello. This is going to be kind of weird. I'm sitting in my basement right now. We have a little office down here, kind of like a farmhouse table kind of thing with two computers, a couch or whatever. Anyway, sitting in my basement and K's out with the dogs and I'm just talking to this microphone and
00:00:32
Speaker
It definitely is a little weird. But either way, here we are.

The Impulse to Start Podcasting

00:00:40
Speaker
So I bought this microphone around November timeframe.
00:00:48
Speaker
I don't really have any plans for what this is going to be. I just had enough of a consistency with folks that were not like demanding I do a podcast because that would misrepresent their communication.
00:01:07
Speaker
you know, asking questions, Hey, would you ever consider it? Or Hey, I heard John has entails podcasts or active life podcasts. Like would you do your own or, you know, there were some folks out there who said, Hey, you should do your own or, or anything like that. And that was super cool. That was nice. But I never, I just, honestly, I don't know if I have the interest in it. Um, I'm, I'm categorically more of a introvert, I think. And the notion of,
00:01:38
Speaker
just sitting here and talking is not exactly what I would default to for a whole list of things. And so I was usually respectfully appreciative, but decisively dismissal when folks had brought that up. And I was like, yeah, thanks, but hell no kind of thing.

Community Encouragement and Decision Making

00:02:08
Speaker
And for reasons of kind of trying to take a little bit of my own advice or coaching or beliefs, I got to thinking a little bit more, um, about, about this whole thing and, you know, not making it, not making it out to be something it's not or.
00:02:34
Speaker
something super formal. Like I don't, I don't have that as the intention. Um, but the thought of talking into this microphone really did sort of hit me in some places where I was like, why am I having this response? Why am I being so defensive and, and, and not even considering it. So I put up a little poll on Instagram
00:03:05
Speaker
if people would be interested. And it was actually really well received. There was quite a good amount of people. And I don't think actually anybody voted no. Now, a no vote could possibly be, you know, someone not voting could be a no, but whatever. It doesn't matter.
00:03:26
Speaker
There's a couple of people, some people I really respect to and look up to and, um, worked with either the military or, um, you know, outside of the military. And, and, uh, so I was like, all right, you know what? Like, let me look at this a little bit more. Anyway, fast forward.

Acquiring the Right Equipment

00:03:44
Speaker
I'm on Amazon.
00:03:47
Speaker
yeah the danger of amazon um so i'm on amazon looking for a microphone uh and of course i'm like i don't know what i'm looking at so i do some research and get this
00:04:05
Speaker
get this, come across this blog or whatever that says, Hey, this type of microphone, a Yeti blue microphone, um, or a blue Yeti, I don't even know which, what's the company, what's the model, but it's pretty good. Like you plug it in, the red light turns on and you speak into it. I'm like, perfect.
00:04:23
Speaker
That's where I'm at right now. Anyway, it was like 50% off and I was like, hey, I got this whole thing. Of course, I went through like a whole analytical thing with Kay and she's like, just get the microphone. I don't think she actually wanted me to get it, but I think she more so just didn't want to hear me hem and haw debate about whether or not I should or shouldn't get it. I mean, it was a very fair, very reasonable price point, so it's not whatever. I'm doing it again.
00:04:51
Speaker
Anyway, get this microphone, it comes, unbox it, and put it on our desk down here.

Reflecting on the Purpose of the Microphone

00:05:00
Speaker
And it's been staring at me for a few months now.
00:05:07
Speaker
And I've been kind of looking at it as well. It's right to the side of my computer and it's got an interesting presence to it in that it's like eyeing me up and I'm kind of eyeing it up. And yeah, I'm not really so sure how comfortable I am with it. And by that, I mean, when I look at it, what I see is a tool
00:05:35
Speaker
that is spoken into to project a message out. I understand it's not a megaphone or a bullhorn. I got it. However, that's just what I'm, that's what I'm seeing. That's what I've been seeing or thinking of when I, when I'm looking at this thing, I'm like, man, I don't know. Like there's enough noise in the world. I don't know if I want to just add to it. So,
00:06:03
Speaker
I am wondering all throughout this like well if I'm just gonna sit it like it's not something I just want to sit at and stare at what did I get it for if I thought there was some value in picking it up or whatever
00:06:19
Speaker
What are you doing here?" And that's kind of how it's been like staring back at me like, what are you doing? What are you really going to do? Are you going to actually do something or are you just going to sit here and stare at me and think and do nothing? So yeah, I was like, all right, this is interesting that I'm having this type of reaction or response.
00:06:44
Speaker
I didn't I didn't love again how I was how I was looking at it and thought that might be you know really short sighted or
00:06:56
Speaker
I guess ignorant really to what a greater purpose or another intention of this thing could be. And conceptually I know that and there's tons of folks who I respect and super successful and they have podcasts and it's a great form of communication and like I know all that. I intellectually understand that. But emotionally and personally my response and my view was different from what I might intellectually know.
00:07:27
Speaker
So that's kind of cool, because I was able to look at that and say like, this is an interesting way of learning something about myself as well, something silly as this microphone. So one of the things that I often ask people, and whether it's a personal coaching client, you know, or somebody doing a between the ears event,
00:07:50
Speaker
or someone I'm just working with. I do a decent amount of work with individuals who are just looking to get better as they define it. And when we're struggling with something or when we're coming up against this kind of block, a great question to ask and one that has really been successful with folks has been, you know, what's another way of looking at this?
00:08:18
Speaker
It's a simple question. It's not groundbreaking. It's not the, you know, you're not going to win a Nobel Peace Prize for asking somebody that. And it just encourages folks to explore a shift in perspective. So I've used this question often with people and figured it was a really cool thing to use this question on myself and really actually go through the
00:08:46
Speaker
The process of answering it not just like uh-huh. I know there's Successful people or people are respect that podcast blah blah blah. So like what's another way of looking at this and The current way of looking at it is it's a tool that projects a voice and makes it louder and talks at people and I'm
00:09:09
Speaker
Super hesitant and weary of of people who talk at people I don't think they're bad people. I just I just generally think they're unaware But
00:09:21
Speaker
I don't want to be associated with that type of person. And that's how I've been currently looking at it. So I like feedback. I need feedback, really, especially in form of communication. I'm not the world's greatest communicator at all, and I don't claim to be. And so, absent of feedback, I'm just like, oh man, this is not, this seems like a bad idea.
00:09:48
Speaker
So what's another way of looking at it?

Reimagining the Microphone's Role

00:09:50
Speaker
Well, instead of it being a tool to project out and talk at people, it's like a vessel
00:10:02
Speaker
to capture thoughts and a vehicle to journey within. And it's an invitation for you to come along with me. That's sort of the other way of looking at it that now when I look at this microphone, that's what I see. And so I'd like to expand on that a little bit.
00:10:30
Speaker
You know, it's a journey within myself and by talking things out, by taking something from a thought and then communicating it, this microphone, it captures that in a way that just letting it stir around in my brain cannot.
00:10:59
Speaker
If I think about it like water, if water is my thoughts, concepts, ideas, whatever, and this microphone previously with a hose, water would flow through the hose and then spray out in whatever direction of aim.
00:11:19
Speaker
however, what I would like to have this medium of of the communication I guess be is More like instead of a hose like a pale like a big old, you know 55 gallon drum or something that there's these thoughts and we we deposit these thoughts into this vessel and it captures it captures them and provides us an opportunity to sit with it to view it to
00:11:48
Speaker
work through things to share with others and not have it be going out towards someone or something, but the intention is just to capture it and see what happens. So yeah.
00:12:13
Speaker
I'd love for you to hop along Hop on in I guess and and take the journey with me. I have no idea where we're going Don't really know what I'm doing and plugging this thing in I'm Plugging this thing in and just kind of speaking I don't have a script
00:12:36
Speaker
which I understand can kind of be like skating on thin ice, but that's sort of par for the course with some of my stuff. So yeah, I guess one of the cool things of inviting you along is gonna lean on you for some feedback and for some, if something pings with you or is interesting or wanna chat about, like, yeah, maybe share my thoughts on that or something. And I'll try to do it in as,
00:13:07
Speaker
Um What am I trying to say? I will try not to pontificate Because I really don't know there's so much stuff. I do not know and I don't I don't claim to know Know know a lot I've been very fortunate to have some incredible experiences and even more amazing mentors and people that have shaped me to
00:13:32
Speaker
to grow into somebody who's in the space of wanting to make positive change for people in their lives.

Embracing Vulnerability and Growth

00:13:39
Speaker
Um, and, and I don't really want to have this be about me or my background or, or anything like that. We can, I'll maybe address it at some point. Um, but I feel like it doesn't really matter. Like what I did seven years ago, 20 years ago, whatever it doesn't, doesn't really matter all that much. So.
00:13:57
Speaker
There is a high degree of vulnerability with this and I think that that is super valuable. It's uncomfortable. It's really not my cup of tea at all in terms of what I like to do or enjoy doing.
00:14:25
Speaker
But that vulnerability is something that I know has tremendous value for for me, honestly, if I could be selfish about that, it's super valuable for me. And to be in an uncomfortable situation like this, where I'm just speaking into into this microphone to capture some thoughts, and then push them out on the web. There's a there's a high degree of exposure that has a little unsettling.
00:14:55
Speaker
and stepping out or stepping up, however you look at it, and saying, hey, this is like, this is what I'm thinking, provides people to look at you in a way that in a platform to that's not defensible. But I think that's also really cool. And I think there's also a ton of value in that, where
00:15:21
Speaker
saying something and letting someone else have the experience of hearing what you said and wondering how it applies to them or how it rings true with them without you needing to defend and clarify and massage. That's a pretty cool thing too. I know it'll help me structure some thoughts and hopefully improve my communication just because of the kind of ground rules with that and the situation.
00:15:51
Speaker
putting yourself out there. Yeah, it's, there's, there's, there's a episode right there just talking about that. Um, I guess the one thing I will do my best to is be, uh, authentic and be honest and, and just be myself.

Authenticity and Learning in Podcasting

00:16:13
Speaker
Uh, and I'm really actually, the more I'm talking about this,
00:16:17
Speaker
really honored if you are listening and you have made the decision to hop on board and and follow in this journey within with me that really even though as of now recording this there's literally zero listeners
00:16:40
Speaker
That means a lot. It actually really doesn't. I never really felt that until I actually just said it. So I'm looking forward to doing this. I am. I'm looking forward to doing this a little bit more. I'm looking forward to just kind of putting myself out there and actually engaging in action versus doing around in thought or just having a good idea that stays a good idea and doesn't.
00:17:09
Speaker
Doesn't serve anyone and like I said selfishly. Yeah, I'm gonna try to serve myself a little bit here and and improve my form of communication Expand upon some thoughts and share some stuff with some folks.

The Challenge of Conciseness

00:17:22
Speaker
So That's that I'm gonna try to have this be
00:17:29
Speaker
less than 30 minutes each time. Um, that to me seems quite honestly like an eternity. Um, but if it's just me yapping into this thing, I think 30 minutes will be plenty. So I think we're good for now. I think we're good for now. I think that established just, Hey, like what the heck is this thing? Um,
00:17:59
Speaker
And so I'd like to stop here. We've been going for about 18 minutes. If you're still awake, um, thanks for, thanks for sticking along. Uh, and I look forward to chatting with you again.
00:18:18
Speaker
soon I guess I guess in a week or whatever I gotta research how this stuff is supposed to be done so either way I'll be up I'll be back online here shortly till then have a good one and I'll chat with you soon okay bye
