Today, let's meet our hosts, Brian Klager and Dave Hutchings.

Journey to Podcasting

00:00:29
Speaker
Hutch, how doing? Hey, Brian. Welcome to the podcast. Dude, welcome to the podcast. This has been a long time coming. We've been dreaming about it for a while. And as we get started, we thought it'd be good for people at least know us a little bit. They're going to get to know our voices.
00:00:45
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, we've been talking about this for a long time and... kind of I don't know if you've had many things like this where of you got a great idea and you kind of drag your feet and then it keeps coming up. This was one of those things that people kept bringing back to us. We kept bringing up and dude, we're

Military Topics and Transition Tips

00:01:02
Speaker
finally here. That feels good.
00:01:03
Speaker
It feels good. And so for those of you who are starting to join us, we're starting a cadence podcast that's on one hand is broad and on another hand, it's narrow. It's broad in the aspect that we want to have a variety of topics and people and ideas and discussions.
00:01:21
Speaker
But it's a little narrow because it's going to be all military related and military ministry, not just ministry related, I guess. There'll be just tips on how to do transitions well, how to do military life, but also how to love people and love Jesus well in the military setting.
00:01:36
Speaker
Yeah, we have Caden's staff who have been doing this for 50 plus years. And I think it's an opportunity to capture the wisdom and the experience, the stories that those people have who have dedicated their life to serving military.
00:01:51
Speaker
ah their family members and yeah, bringing Christ, bringing the gospel. And there's, there's some lessons learned along the way. And I think we want to capture that and have that be of value for others that care deeply about the military. Maybe you've got a family member in the military community, or you're looking down the barrel of your first PCS and you're feeling nervous about

History of Cadence Ministry

00:02:14
Speaker
it. And hopefully we can provide some resource for those kinds of things too.
00:02:17
Speaker
Why don't use the military pun there looking down the barrel of your first PCS? You know what? I have picked up so many military puns over the years and probably not the best one, but they were now they're there.
00:02:29
Speaker
We're good. it's It's in the podcast. So you mentioned kind of a history of Cadence and Cadence has been around for over 70 years now. But how long have you been with Cadence? This first podcast is for everyone to really just get to know us.
00:02:42
Speaker
So we're kind of interviewing each other. So how long you been with Cadence and how'd you first get connected? Yeah, good question. I've been with Cadence 18 years now and i was actually connected. There was a Cadence missionary in my church growing up and our church supported them. they,
00:03:02
Speaker
And they actually celebrated 50 years with Cadence the year that I joined the mission. So that's almost the entire

Brian's Cadence Journey

00:03:09
Speaker
history of Cadence. They were one of the first missionaries. So I knew about that, but I'd never connected really what Cadence did. i didn't have an experience of going to a Cadence hospitality house or a military community.
00:03:21
Speaker
And so when I graduated from Bible school, I went to Moody Bible Institute. And the year after that, actually went and visited a Cadence community in Germany. And I was hooked. I knew that that was the kind of ministry that was on my heart that I wanted to be a part of opening your home, your life, sharing the gospel and walking alongside military people who are this mobile force around the world, that these families are going to go out and live Jesus wherever they go.
00:03:49
Speaker
And what a privilege it would be to share that with them. So I

Dave's Path from Military to Ministry

00:03:52
Speaker
but i was hooked. And that was 18 years ago that I joined for two and see what God might do and I'm still here and God's still doing some amazing stuff.
00:04:00
Speaker
It's awesome. Yeah. How about you? On one hand, ah you got me beat by a couple years because we've been on staff with Cadence for about 16 years now. But I never thought about it till you're talking just now. We've been connected to Cadence for over 25 years. Yeah.
00:04:16
Speaker
And so for us, it was 1999. ninety ninety nine I was in the army. We moved to Germany. We describe it as being new to being married, new to living overseas and new to the army.
00:04:29
Speaker
And at the second weekend, we were... In Germany, we went to chapel and met Paul and Stacey Cassidy, who run the hospitality house there. They invited us out for lunch and we were hooked.
00:04:42
Speaker
And we're part their ministry for the three years we were stationed there. And then really sensed God calling us into military ministry. And yet in a strange turn of events, God affirmed he's calling us into it. But then there was a pretty clear, but not yet.
00:05:01
Speaker
And so stayed in the army a few more years, eventually got out in 2004 and went to Denver Seminary, got an MDiv and then joined Cadence in 2018. No, 2008. Sorry.
00:05:13
Speaker
We moved back to Germany and our family ran a house, toddy house and then served in some leadership roles and spent another 13 years in Germany. And now we're both back here in Colorado.

Family Introductions

00:05:26
Speaker
Both moved back in 2021 to work at the headquarters on the leadership team. And tell me a little bit about your family. Tell not just me. I know your family, but tell everybody that's listening on the other end of this about your family. Yeah. Yeah. There's definitely been, you know, talk about the,
00:05:45
Speaker
delivering the news. You're going to be a part of this, but not yet. Or this is what I have for you, but not yet. And that dreaded waiting that the Lord brings on us. um ah I have an amazing family. My, my bride, Andrea, and then we've got four kids. Our oldest is 13 and then 10. And then the youngest are six. They're actually twins.
00:06:04
Speaker
And the Lord put adoption on our heart for years. And while we were living in Japan, ah God really made it clear ah that we were to just kind of take some steps of faith that direction and brought these two girls into our life. And there was a lot of promise, but waiting involved in that. And God just, yeah, moved in powerful ways that our family can hold on And we yeah we've got just this big, crazy family now. So between first grade and seventh grade, we're going every direction all the time, whether it's
00:06:37
Speaker
playing in the outdoors or school or family

Siblings' Unique Life Paths

00:06:40
Speaker
friends. We just, yeah, it's a full life for sure. You know, it's, you're talking about your your twins that you adopted. It's for everyone else to know kind of reason Hutch and I get along so well is his family found themselves at a ah season where they were leaving military ministry in Japan.
00:06:59
Speaker
but couldn't move to the United States. And so we ended up in Germany for a year in the same town together doing military ministry and our families just bonded. And then at the same time, we moved back to the Denver area.
00:07:12
Speaker
Yeah, that was all connected to the immigration of the girls and so much, again, waiting in that process. But then God did something really great that we got to share that year. Our family spent that time together and and then to come back and serve here at the kids headquarters at the same time.
00:07:28
Speaker
I got just lined up something really cool. It's been fun. Our families are, you know, little quick background on mine. ah We both have four kids and our youngest is also adopted.
00:07:39
Speaker
We adopted from Ethiopia when she was, oh we got paired up with her when she was only eight months old. So my wife, Amy, we met at TCU and she's a kinesiology degree and athletic trainer by trade. And then we did the army and then the ministry route.
00:08:00
Speaker
And we've got four kids. Our oldest is 22 and married and finishing up his final year of college, ah Air Force ROTC.
00:08:12
Speaker
And I'm learning, okay, he's only been married less than six months. So I correct myself. We have five kids because now we have a daughter-in-law and ah she's got a teaching degree, elementary education.
00:08:27
Speaker
And so they'll be doing the Air Force next summer. And then we've got a freshman at Biola University, an eighth grader, and then our daughter who we adopted. She's in third grade. So it's awesome. It's a ride.
00:08:40
Speaker
it is a journey It is. It is. It is. So, okay. Those are our families, our kind of cadence stories. And Unless you have anything else to

Outdoor Activities and Enrichment

00:08:49
Speaker
add, I came up with this really high speed online spinner and list of 20 questions that we can, we don't know what question we're going to be asked, but oh we're we're just going to, Oh, I can shoot from the hip.
00:09:01
Speaker
Is that what we're going to do? what Pun well played. Our military members appreciate that. All right. So I'm going to spin. You get to answer the first question. It'll be question number six.
00:09:14
Speaker
Outside of a family member, who do you look up to and why? Man, there's been a lot of people in my life. I have a good friend who's ah he's a coach, a consultant. he was a pastor for years, ah but his name's Daryl Hammond. And ah did everything from coaching basketball with him when I was in high school and college.
00:09:33
Speaker
ah We would do camps for kids in inner city Denver to walk in alongside of him in ministry and in leadership. And he coaches leaders across the state of Colorado. But I I look up to him for a couple reasons. One, he's really taken some really big steps of faith through hard family situations, as well as in his career, moving between HR and leadership and ministry and ah basketball coaching. he played international ball for years and
00:10:05
Speaker
Really, those are big leaps between any of those things. And to watch him walk in faith, navigate the unknown and stay close to Jesus has just been a really admirable thing about him. So he's a local guy here in Colorado, a good friend of mine.
00:10:21
Speaker
That's great. So much so, uh, you've introduced me to him, went down and I got to listen to one of his conferences and leadership training. And I agree. He was really, uh, provided a lot of great content. He was really good and information, have good information.
00:10:35
Speaker
So, all right. Are you up? Spin it spinner. No whammies, no whammies. Stop. Oh, do you have any siblings?
00:10:46
Speaker
ah Tell us about him. Yeah, that's fine. I have one brother, Jimmy. He's two and a half years older than me. He's four inches taller than me. He's built like a linebacker ah that could play college football, whereas I'm a skinny biker.

Fun Questions and Answers

00:11:03
Speaker
he's ah And he was an infantryman for 20 years, ah infantry officer, ranger. And if you're, even when we talk about someone would look, oh, but that was outside of a family member, that question. Sorry. So Jimmy, I do look up to you, but I can't talk about that right now.
00:11:20
Speaker
um So he and his family live over in Grand Junction, Colorado, and he did the army life for 20 years and a lot of sacrifices, quite a few deployments. And yeah, now he's into real estate over there. We get stay close. We like to go elk hunting and duck and goose hunting together. So our families are good friends.
00:11:40
Speaker
Yeah. Do you have any siblings? I do. Yeah. I've got one sister. She actually lives full time in Haiti, teaching at a school there, and she provides family support. for families, uh, kids with special needs.
00:11:52
Speaker
So it's pretty crazy work. She's been living there full-time for years now, and that really has become her home. And, uh, and she's, a she's not married, doesn't have family there with her. She's, she's committed to those families and she's really made a home in Haiti, which is incredible.
00:12:11
Speaker
It's incredible because Haiti's, uh, not the safest place for Christian missionaries. Not at all. And she's really had the opportunity to stay there through a lot of the hardship. She's not in the capital. She's in a more rural area.
00:12:25
Speaker
There's ways that she can really stay and serve. And it's spoken volumes to the people there that she would be committed to life and community in Haiti. And God's protected her and provided for her to do that.
00:12:38
Speaker
So was there a time ah where your parents with two kids, one was living in Japan and one was in Haiti? Oh, yeah. It's the it's a deep combination of joy and regret for them.
00:12:50
Speaker
Like, I think we raised them right. but Oh, man. Yeah. Shoot, we shouldn't have done that. It's been definitely a challenge. It's been a joy to be back, be near family, being stateside after living international for so long. But I think it's a mixed bag for my parents in a really good way.
00:13:07
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that makes sense. All right. Spinner's active. Wait, I'm asking you now. Yeah. Fifteen. Do you enjoy, this is I laugh because if you know Hutch, the answer this question is duh, but do you enjoy spending time outdoors? Yeah, the answer is I really don't enjoy spending time indoors.
00:13:30
Speaker
it That's probably the best way to answer it. Yes. ah ah outdoor photography. I've been a rock climber. I've done search and rescue, ah been urban a climbing guide. So i love to climb mountains. I love to do rock climbing, take my kids out doing that, or ah giving experiences for kids at our local school.
00:13:53
Speaker
It was a part of our ministry for years. So anything I can do to be outdoors. And for me, it really is where I experienced the Lord and where

Closing Thoughts and Future Episodes

00:14:02
Speaker
busyness of my life slows down is in the outdoors. Love to get out and hunt. Took my son out hunting this year. And um those are some sweet times, some deep connection between me and him. I wouldn't trade that for anything. So I love the outdoors. that I know you're the same way.
00:14:18
Speaker
I am the same way hunting, skiing, ah camping. i don't like hiking, which is why in the army i was a tanker versus infantryman. I'd rather ride around than walk, um but do love getting into the outdoors. all right. Quick question on that one. Would you rather skin up a mountain in order to ski down it or go rock climbing?
00:14:39
Speaker
Well, it's winter. I'm going to go with skiing right now for sure. I just did one the other day and it was, it was a great time, but that's a hard choice. I love rock climbing and getting to the top of a mountain by a difficult route, but being able to earn your turns is, is a good way to go.
00:14:55
Speaker
Love it. All right, here we go. 17. have favorite TV show or movies? Favorite TV shows. or I love watching NFL. I love college basketball on TV. So,
00:15:09
Speaker
And the NFL in a way is reality TV. and Okay, maybe not. And movies, I'm going to go kind of off the grid just a bit. I love a movie called Four Feathers.
00:15:20
Speaker
And forget the era. I mean, it's old, old. It's about an old British ah a time of war in which if you got four feathers from your military colleagues, it was a sign of like cowardship.
00:15:37
Speaker
I don't know if that's a word, but and it's been a long time since I watched. Thanks. It's been a long time since I watched the movie, but there are some profound, deep life lessons. So if you're looking for kind of an off the grid a movie that a lot of people haven't heard about, I'd go with Four Feathers. Fantastic. All right. Let me ask you one more.
00:15:58
Speaker
We're going with question 10. Your morning person or a night owl? Night owl. Really? 100%. Yeah, absolutely. and But i I do really well with less sleep. So yeah my sweet spot is kind of at the six hour mark. And i really, I have great energy for a long day. So, you know, 1130 to 530, that's a good way for me to go or midnight to six. That's Great. So I'll stay up late, get get all the family in bed, and then I can, you know, give myself to my hobbies. I love to roast coffee. That can be a late night activity for me. Do some extra reading, all sorts of things. But then I'm up early and back at it.
00:16:39
Speaker
Love it. All right. Final spin. And we will go with number. Three. Nice. What's your favorite way to unwind, Brian?
00:16:52
Speaker
Oh, favorite, like, so crazy day. well, today's a Tuesday. Yesterday was Monday. It was a really full day. Didn't get left the house at like 6am.
00:17:04
Speaker
Didn't get home till about seven or 8pm and Monday night football was on. Nice. And honestly, ah put my feet up on the couch, turned on Monday night football and it was not a game worth watching to the end. So, you know, 30, 45 minutes was all I needed. My team wasn't in it. I'm a,
00:17:23
Speaker
I grew up a San Diego Chargers fan living in Denver. I've become a Broncos fan and they're in the same division. So creates some, some challenges, but in fact, they're going to be playing this week. and but i'm flying I know often in those games, I let the game start and then feel who I Like, who am I cheering for? Like, I figured out by the end of the first quarter, just kind of which way my my heart's going. Nice.
00:17:49
Speaker
I like that. It speaks a lot to the different stage of life we're at. I would thoroughly enjoy that. But last night, same thing. i had a long day yesterday and I was on the couch with all three of my daughters watching Bluey.
00:18:02
Speaker
So that was our... my And that's that's good unwinding, cuddling with your girls, hanging out, relaxing. But Bluey was more my speed. Well, there's there's a for the podcasters, for the listeners, that's a little bit of Hutch and I. You're going to get to hear our voices.
00:18:18
Speaker
Hopefully you enjoy the podcast so you keep coming back to them and keep hearing our voices. And we're going to bring in a lot more voices. Yeah, hopefully you're not going to hear us too much more. You're going to hear us drawing out other people's voices, their stories, their experiences. And so we'll we'll be in the background a little bit more in the future. But we want you guys to get to know us and what this is going to be about. And thanks for jumping in today.
