Introduction & Purpose

00:00:00
Speaker
Hey everybody, welcome to episode one of the podcast and today we are covering the top 10 reasons we do run Disney races and why you should too.
00:00:20
Speaker
Hey everyone, I'm Erica and this is AJ.
00:00:22
Speaker
And the goal of our podcast is just to share some tips and tricks that we've learned over the last few years doing run Disney races with you so that hopefully you can have a good run Disney race experience.
00:00:32
Speaker
Yeah, we're super excited to start this thing.
00:00:34
Speaker
This is episode one.
00:00:35
Speaker
And as we kind of get this thing off the ground, if you wouldn't mind doing us a favor, letting us know how this is going, leave a review.
00:00:42
Speaker
Any ideas you have would be awesome.
00:00:44
Speaker
And if you've got questions, like I'd love for people to feel free to ask them.
00:00:47
Speaker
You can post that on YouTube or send us an email or however you want to.
00:00:52
Speaker
Want to do that?
00:00:53
Speaker
I'd love to know how we can make this podcast as helpful as possible.
00:00:56
Speaker
But let's start with today's topic.
00:00:59
Speaker
Now, we have a show format that's going to apply from here on out.
00:01:02
Speaker
But this first one, I thought, Erica, it'd be worth talking about why we do run Disney races.
00:01:08
Speaker
So let's say someone is...
00:01:11
Speaker
considering registering, this might be helpful, right?
00:01:14
Speaker
Or they've already registered and they've got the like, oh my gosh, what did I just sign myself up for?
00:01:20
Speaker
So let's casually talk through our top 10 reasons that we do these run Disney races and why someone else might want to as well.
00:01:28
Speaker
So I've got five, you've got five.
00:01:30
Speaker
I have not seen your list.
00:01:32
Speaker
And so you haven't

Motivations for Disney Races

00:01:33
Speaker
seen my list.
00:01:33
Speaker
I have not, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of our answers are the same.
00:01:36
Speaker
Yeah.
00:01:37
Speaker
Yeah.
00:01:37
Speaker
Yeah.
00:01:37
Speaker
We do think a lot alike.
00:01:38
Speaker
We've been married for 22 years now.
00:01:40
Speaker
So, uh, some of the things that we say, just it, sometimes I just sound like you.
00:01:45
Speaker
Yep.
00:01:47
Speaker
So let's go through, I've got our notes.
00:01:49
Speaker
Let's go through our top 10 reasons why you should do a run Disney race.
00:01:52
Speaker
Um, on the notes, mine are listed first.
00:01:54
Speaker
Unfortunately, that was an accident on my part.
00:01:56
Speaker
Do you want to go first or you want me to go first?
00:01:59
Speaker
Okay.
00:01:59
Speaker
So I'll share my number one reason.
00:02:01
Speaker
Well, these are not in order, by the way.
00:02:02
Speaker
Yeah.
00:02:03
Speaker
Mine are not in any particular order.
00:02:03
Speaker
Okay.
00:02:04
Speaker
Yours aren't either.
00:02:04
Speaker
Good.
00:02:04
Speaker
No.
00:02:05
Speaker
So the number one reason that I do these run Disney races, and I said number one, it's not even... Okay, how about the first, not the first reason, how do I say that?
00:02:15
Speaker
One of my five races.
00:02:16
Speaker
One of my top five.
00:02:17
Speaker
Thank you, Erica.
00:02:19
Speaker
Is the medals and the themes.
00:02:21
Speaker
Oh, they get you every time.
00:02:24
Speaker
They get me every time.
00:02:25
Speaker
They do.
00:02:25
Speaker
The only time they don't get me is when it's something really obscure.
00:02:29
Speaker
Like I didn't register for wine and dine this year because I'm not a huge lady in the tramp.
00:02:35
Speaker
fan like you know i'll watch the movie but like i don't need a medal with that on it so they didn't get me this time but nine times out of ten yeah they have in the past they get me do they get you as much not so much yeah i love my medals yeah i love the themes i love the shirts that you get with the theme on it like they get me with the theme yeah
00:02:55
Speaker
That is one of the reasons I do it.
00:02:57
Speaker
So if you're a Disney fan, I would say if you just love collecting, you know, Disney things and whatever, then the themes might be one of your things as well.
00:03:07
Speaker
Yes.
00:03:07
Speaker
You know, it might be a reason to do it.
00:03:08
Speaker
So that's one of mine.
00:03:09
Speaker
Erica, what's one of your reasons?
00:03:10
Speaker
One of mine is running in costume.
00:03:13
Speaker
I just love like seeing everyone dressed up in their costumes.
00:03:17
Speaker
Some people go like full on with a theme.
00:03:19
Speaker
I mean, if it's like Moana, you'll see like 2000 people wearing a Moana costume, but other people do other, you know, spinoffs.
00:03:26
Speaker
And, um, it's just fun when you're running.
00:03:29
Speaker
Like I'm easily distracted while I'm running by like checking out other people's costumes and

Magical Race Experiences

00:03:34
Speaker
things.
00:03:34
Speaker
It's not.
00:03:34
Speaker
I mean, you see other people dressed up at other races, like non-Disney races.
00:03:39
Speaker
You can see the occasional, like, I don't know, hot dog or something like that.
00:03:42
Speaker
But it's not, like, this is a cohesive theme where people all, beyond theme are off, but there's a lot of people dressed up.
00:03:50
Speaker
Or, like, you'll see, like, groups of people in theme.
00:03:53
Speaker
So, like, the people that dressed up as the Hook movie, there was, like, the whole baseball team.
00:03:58
Speaker
And, yeah, like...
00:03:59
Speaker
Yeah, it was a Tinkerbell race.
00:04:00
Speaker
So they had a little spinoff Peter Pan thing going on.
00:04:04
Speaker
Remember the VHS tapes?
00:04:05
Speaker
Yes.
00:04:06
Speaker
Those, that group was awesome.
00:04:07
Speaker
I mean, people get so creative.
00:04:09
Speaker
The monorail of multiple people.
00:04:10
Speaker
They were all the different section of the train.
00:04:13
Speaker
Slinky dogs.
00:04:14
Speaker
Yes.
00:04:14
Speaker
Yeah.
00:04:15
Speaker
Yeah.
00:04:15
Speaker
I do enjoy seeing costumes.
00:04:17
Speaker
I don't enjoy running in costume costume.
00:04:20
Speaker
Right.
00:04:20
Speaker
I like a shirt that looks like the theme or a hat or something, but I've never dressed full out.
00:04:29
Speaker
Yeah.
00:04:29
Speaker
Have you, um, I, some years or some races have been a little bit more complex than others.
00:04:35
Speaker
It gets a little tricky in the port-a-potty if you're wearing like a full blown tutu with multiple layers and, you know, um, but, but yeah, I mean, we usually do like some sort of screen printed, like athletic wear in that costume or whatever, but yeah.
00:04:52
Speaker
We've found that the longer the race, the less costume complexity there is.
00:04:57
Speaker
So a 5K at Run Disney, you see everybody dressed up.
00:05:02
Speaker
You get up to the half marathon and it's a little more just, you know, cotton, what do you call it?
00:05:07
Speaker
Like, what are the race shirts made out of?
00:05:09
Speaker
Like, not spandex.
00:05:10
Speaker
But anyway...
00:05:11
Speaker
You see athletic wear that's kind of like on color.
00:05:14
Speaker
Right.
00:05:15
Speaker
So the marathon is some people are just wearing their Lululemon.
00:05:18
Speaker
Like they're not on theme at all because they need to be comfortable for 26 miles.
00:05:21
Speaker
Yeah.
00:05:21
Speaker
Okay.
00:05:22
Speaker
Did we beat costumes to death?
00:05:23
Speaker
Sorry about that.
00:05:24
Speaker
Is that like its own episode, costumes?
00:05:27
Speaker
It could be.
00:05:28
Speaker
It will actually be in the future.
00:05:30
Speaker
Okay, good.
00:05:30
Speaker
There's a lot more we could say about that.
00:05:32
Speaker
We're doing 29 weeks to marathon.
00:05:34
Speaker
Yes.
00:05:34
Speaker
Right.
00:05:35
Speaker
So every week as we get closer to marathon weekend, no matter what your distance is, we're counting down to that weekend.
00:05:44
Speaker
And so we'll talk costumes in there.
00:05:46
Speaker
We'll have a whole thing on that.
00:05:47
Speaker
So maybe we should save some of the good stuff.
00:05:48
Speaker
We will, yeah.
00:05:49
Speaker
Number two on my list of reasons I do run Disney races is it's just so much fun.
00:05:54
Speaker
Right.
00:05:54
Speaker
Like the vibe, the energy, everything about it to me is an enjoyable experience.
00:06:00
Speaker
I mean, there's not, I mean, yes, you know, when you really have to go to the bathroom, you know, and there's a long line, that's not very fun.
00:06:06
Speaker
But like 99% of the entire race experience, including going to the expo.
00:06:12
Speaker
Right.
00:06:12
Speaker
I mean, even just being on the bus with other runners, it is just fun.
00:06:16
Speaker
So that, that's my number two.
00:06:17
Speaker
What's your number two?
00:06:18
Speaker
Very similar.
00:06:20
Speaker
I have said this phrase a lot, but I say that running at Disney is the only place that feels magical.
00:06:25
Speaker
Um, people that know me know that I don't love running as much as you do.
00:06:30
Speaker
I do like it.
00:06:30
Speaker
Yeah.
00:06:31
Speaker
I really like the feeling of accomplishment when it's done.
00:06:34
Speaker
Um, so we've run other races that are not run Disney other places and they are not magical.
00:06:41
Speaker
I don't enjoy them streets.
00:06:42
Speaker
Do you?
00:06:43
Speaker
No, I didn't really love running through the streets of Atlanta.
00:06:46
Speaker
Um, so no, I mean, that's why I love around Disney because everything about it,

Disney vs. Local Races

00:06:51
Speaker
um, just feels magical.
00:06:52
Speaker
The costumes, the people, the entertainment, um,
00:06:56
Speaker
They just do a really good job of putting on a good race.
00:06:59
Speaker
There's not many races where there's a curated moment that makes you cry in a good way.
00:07:05
Speaker
Like you might cry at another race for not good ways, you know?
00:07:09
Speaker
But they've curated this moment when you come through Cinderella's Castle.
00:07:13
Speaker
Oh yeah, running down Main Street.
00:07:14
Speaker
I don't care who you are.
00:07:16
Speaker
I mean, we have talked to so many people and everybody cries running on Main Street.
00:07:20
Speaker
I don't know why I even get teared up.
00:07:21
Speaker
I mean, I've been down Main Street.
00:07:23
Speaker
A hundred times in my life.
00:07:24
Speaker
It's like a combination of like the location and the people that are there cheering you on.
00:07:29
Speaker
And it's just, it's very magical.
00:07:31
Speaker
And then of course we worked at Disneyland out in California when we were in college.
00:07:34
Speaker
And so we've seen backstage, but being able to run backstage is cool.
00:07:38
Speaker
So yeah, it's just the whole thing's very Disney, you know, magic.
00:07:42
Speaker
Side tangent, isn't it interesting when you book a VIP tour thing and they take you backstage, you're not allowed to have a camera of any kind.
00:07:51
Speaker
But when you're running a run Disney race, you're backstage.
00:07:54
Speaker
You could film the whole thing.
00:07:55
Speaker
Yeah.
00:07:56
Speaker
People are stopping, taking pictures of anything they want.
00:07:58
Speaker
Right.
00:07:58
Speaker
So if you want to see backstage.
00:08:01
Speaker
Just run Disney.
00:08:02
Speaker
Yeah.
00:08:03
Speaker
It's a lot of effort, but yeah, absolutely.
00:08:07
Speaker
Okay.
00:08:07
Speaker
Was that good on your number two?
00:08:08
Speaker
I've got my number three locked and loaded if you're ready.
00:08:11
Speaker
I like how organized it is.
00:08:13
Speaker
And part of that is that it's predictable.
00:08:15
Speaker
Right.
00:08:15
Speaker
Like that could also be a bad thing, I guess, is that it's the same usually every weekend, but like the structure of how the thing works.
00:08:24
Speaker
Yeah.
00:08:25
Speaker
I understand.
00:08:26
Speaker
And I know it's probably going to be the same next time.
00:08:29
Speaker
Or if you're doing multiple races in a weekend, once you've done the first one, you know what to expect on the next one.
00:08:35
Speaker
How many times have you gone and we've gone to a local race or another race and you just don't know where anything is?
00:08:42
Speaker
No.
00:08:42
Speaker
Yeah.
00:08:43
Speaker
not as organized.
00:08:44
Speaker
I'm like, is there a water station?
00:08:46
Speaker
Is there a bathroom break?
00:08:47
Speaker
Right.
00:08:47
Speaker
Like that's, you need to know that information.
00:08:49
Speaker
Sometimes it's not all super clear.
00:08:51
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:08:53
Speaker
So at Disney, as big as it is and as, you know, whatever corporate as it feels, at least it's, it's organized.
00:09:00
Speaker
Right.
00:09:00
Speaker
Right.
00:09:00
Speaker
And if you don't know how that's a different thing than organized, like it is organized.
00:09:05
Speaker
Yes.
00:09:05
Speaker
You just need to learn it.
00:09:06
Speaker
Yeah.
00:09:06
Speaker
Right.
00:09:07
Speaker
Whereas sometimes some of the other things I've gone to, not so much.
00:09:10
Speaker
So I like how organized and predictable it feels.
00:09:12
Speaker
Yeah.
00:09:13
Speaker
What's your number three?
00:09:14
Speaker
Um, I love that it's a vacation and there's this accomplishment.
00:09:20
Speaker
Um, it's like a two in one sort of a deal.
00:09:23
Speaker
And also that we do it together because I love that running is our thing that we do together.
00:09:27
Speaker
Uh, we don't train together, but we do run together for the race weekend.
00:09:31
Speaker
So I love that.
00:09:33
Speaker
Yeah.
00:09:33
Speaker
So you promise you didn't see my answers.
00:09:35
Speaker
I did not see your answer.
00:09:36
Speaker
My number four is it's a race and a vacation.
00:09:39
Speaker
Yeah.
00:09:42
Speaker
You can see on the notes, it's literally the same thing.
00:09:45
Speaker
And we put it on the same number.
00:09:47
Speaker
That's really funny.
00:09:48
Speaker
Yeah.
00:09:49
Speaker
That's really funny.
00:09:50
Speaker
So yeah, I, I, I, whatever, certify everything that you just said.
00:09:54
Speaker
Yeah.
00:09:55
Speaker
Um, okay.

Race & Vacation Combo

00:09:56
Speaker
What's your next one?
00:09:57
Speaker
Um, I just love the people and like the camaraderie that they, that you find at run Disney.
00:10:03
Speaker
Um, everyone for the most part is like super encouraging of each other.
00:10:06
Speaker
That is not the case with every other race.
00:10:09
Speaker
Um,
00:10:11
Speaker
Yeah.
00:10:11
Speaker
Sometimes you can show up at a race and like people are really intense or like you feel like you maybe don't belong there.
00:10:18
Speaker
I don't know.
00:10:19
Speaker
Everybody belongs at run Disney.
00:10:21
Speaker
Yeah.
00:10:21
Speaker
Um, you know, everyone's sharing their encouraging stories with each other in the corrals when you're sitting around waiting.
00:10:27
Speaker
Um, everyone's just for each other.
00:10:28
Speaker
I love that.
00:10:29
Speaker
I like the mix of you can have run Boston.
00:10:33
Speaker
Yeah.
00:10:34
Speaker
And you can also be doing your first 5K and you're hoping to cross the finish line.
00:10:38
Speaker
And that's cool.
00:10:39
Speaker
Yeah.
00:10:40
Speaker
Right.
00:10:40
Speaker
Like I love and I feel like the support between people is genuine.
00:10:45
Speaker
Right.
00:10:46
Speaker
So if you've run Boston, but someone's running their first 5K, it feels authentic.
00:10:50
Speaker
Yes.
00:10:50
Speaker
That people, that somebody, one of them would say to the other, great job today.
00:10:54
Speaker
Mm-hmm.
00:10:55
Speaker
You're encroaching into my number five, but yes.
00:10:57
Speaker
Oh, sorry.
00:10:59
Speaker
It's okay.
00:11:01
Speaker
Okay.
00:11:01
Speaker
Are you done with the people and camaraderie comments?
00:11:03
Speaker
Yes, yes.
00:11:04
Speaker
Okay, let me give you my number five.
00:11:06
Speaker
And it gives me something to look forward to all year.
00:11:08
Speaker
Yes.
00:11:09
Speaker
And it gives me something to train for.
00:11:10
Speaker
So they have them kind of...
00:11:11
Speaker
spread out throughout the year.
00:11:13
Speaker
So there's, um, you know, October, November race, there's a January, then there's a February, then there's an April, right.
00:11:19
Speaker
And none during the summer really.
00:11:21
Speaker
Um, so I just liked it depending on what I've registered for.
00:11:24
Speaker
Like I've kind of got something to train for, stay fit for, look forward to, um, save all my money for, um,
00:11:32
Speaker
Right.
00:11:32
Speaker
Like I have something to look forward to.
00:11:34
Speaker
It keeps me active.
00:11:36
Speaker
And sometimes it keeps me accountable when I want to eat something that I probably shouldn't be eating, things like that.
00:11:42
Speaker
I love, well, sometimes I just eat it.
00:11:44
Speaker
That doesn't work for me.
00:11:46
Speaker
I like it.
00:11:47
Speaker
It keeps me somewhat accountable throughout the year.
00:11:50
Speaker
Yeah.
00:11:51
Speaker
What's your last one?
00:11:52
Speaker
My last one is that run Disney is super inclusive.
00:11:56
Speaker
I just run Disney is for everyone.
00:11:58
Speaker
Like AJ was saying, whether you've run Boston or you've never run a 5k before, it doesn't matter.
00:12:05
Speaker
Um, you can do run Disney.
00:12:07
Speaker
Uh, Jeff Galloway is the run Disney coach and he is a big proponent of the run, walk, run thing, which is what I do a lot of the times, especially for marathon.
00:12:15
Speaker
Um, and so, you know, anyone can do run Disney and nobody will look down on you for how slow or how fast or how little or how much you're walking or running it's everyone can do it.
00:12:28
Speaker
It's a really great race to start if you've never done a race before.
00:12:32
Speaker
Yes.
00:12:32
Speaker
And I would add that it's a gateway.
00:12:34
Speaker
Like it's, you do, let's say you go do, uh, we live in Atlanta, you go do the Atlanta Thanksgiving day half marathon or whatever.
00:12:43
Speaker
It's going to be a good experience, but it's not going to probably have that same vibe that we've been describing.
00:12:49
Speaker
So you might just do that and say, I ran a half marathon and then you're probably good.
00:12:55
Speaker
Right.
00:12:56
Speaker
You know, you probably don't need to do that again.
00:12:58
Speaker
And I'd pick on Atlanta, like choose a city.
00:13:00
Speaker
Like generally, unless it's one of these really awesome races, you might just want and done it.
00:13:06
Speaker
Yeah.
00:13:07
Speaker
At Disney, it's a gateway.
00:13:08
Speaker
I mean, you do it and you might not do it again.
00:13:11
Speaker
And I do actually want to cover a couple of reasons you wouldn't do run Disney, but like you might, but you probably will.

Community & Inclusivity

00:13:17
Speaker
Yeah.
00:13:18
Speaker
People just keep signing up for it.
00:13:20
Speaker
I did my first princess half in 2016 and that's what started this whole thing for us.
00:13:25
Speaker
So totally.
00:13:26
Speaker
I mean, you, you're going to get hooked.
00:13:27
Speaker
Yeah.
00:13:29
Speaker
You want to talk about some reasons not why you might not.
00:13:32
Speaker
That was our top 10.
00:13:32
Speaker
Yeah.
00:13:33
Speaker
Right.
00:13:33
Speaker
Yeah.
00:13:34
Speaker
Do you want to talk about some reasons why people might not want to do run Disney?
00:13:39
Speaker
It's not.
00:13:39
Speaker
I mean, it is nitpicky in my opinion, but I don't know your answers.
00:13:42
Speaker
Mine are nitpicky, I guess.
00:13:44
Speaker
So do you want to go first this round or you want me to go first?
00:13:46
Speaker
You can go first.
00:13:47
Speaker
Okay.
00:13:49
Speaker
Here's my thing.
00:13:52
Speaker
Registration, which you have not dealt with since you and I've run these together, it is hard.
00:13:58
Speaker
It's harder than actually training for and running the race.
00:14:02
Speaker
Right.
00:14:02
Speaker
Because the spots are limited and you have to register so far in advance.
00:14:07
Speaker
So we just registered for Princess, which is in February of next year.
00:14:13
Speaker
It's June.
00:14:14
Speaker
Right.
00:14:14
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:15
Speaker
And we just did that registration.
00:14:17
Speaker
I don't know what our life is going to look like next February, to be quite honest with you.
00:14:20
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:20
Speaker
I don't you know, I don't know what's going to be going on in our kids.
00:14:23
Speaker
schedule, my work schedule, but I have to commit to it now.
00:14:27
Speaker
And once I commit to it, I'm committed.
00:14:29
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:30
Speaker
I get no refunds.
00:14:31
Speaker
No.
00:14:31
Speaker
No transfers.
00:14:32
Speaker
No deferrals.
00:14:34
Speaker
None of that.
00:14:34
Speaker
None of that.
00:14:35
Speaker
If I decide I can't go, there goes my money.
00:14:38
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:38
Speaker
You know, and I actually agree with that because I don't want there to become some black market thing where people are like taking advantage of run Disney, you know, registrations.
00:14:47
Speaker
So I agree with that, but it's so far in advance that it makes it hard for like life planning.
00:14:53
Speaker
Totally.
00:14:54
Speaker
I'm not a woman, so I wouldn't get pregnant.
00:14:56
Speaker
But like, imagine if you get pregnant.
00:14:58
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:14:58
Speaker
Now you just can't run it.
00:14:59
Speaker
Well, that's not true.
00:15:00
Speaker
I've seen a lot of really pregnant women running these races.
00:15:04
Speaker
It's impressive.
00:15:05
Speaker
So the registration so far out is a reason you might not want to do it.
00:15:09
Speaker
Is that you just might not know what's going on in your life.
00:15:11
Speaker
If you're like considering medical school and you might be in next year, I wouldn't sign up for a race for next year.
00:15:17
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:15:19
Speaker
I don't know.
00:15:20
Speaker
Maybe it works for you.
00:15:20
Speaker
So that's one reason I would not do it.
00:15:23
Speaker
What's one for you?
00:15:24
Speaker
Mine is just that the courses don't really change very much.
00:15:27
Speaker
This is like our 17th.
00:15:31
Speaker
We've done 17 or so of these.
00:15:32
Speaker
Yeah, I think 16, yep.
00:15:34
Speaker
And so it starts to become a little bit redundant.
00:15:38
Speaker
Not to the point that we would stop doing Run Disney.
00:15:40
Speaker
We might just do a few less Run Disney this year and a few more of other cities or something.
00:15:45
Speaker
But yeah, it kind of loses its...
00:15:51
Speaker
Main Street doesn't lose its moments.
00:15:53
Speaker
No, never, never.
00:15:54
Speaker
That's really good.
00:15:56
Speaker
Or Epcot going through World Showcase doesn't lose its thing.
00:16:00
Speaker
But the highway...
00:16:03
Speaker
Yeah.
00:16:03
Speaker
By the sanitation plant.
00:16:05
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:16:05
Speaker
You know, or the international squeeze way.
00:16:08
Speaker
Right.
00:16:08
Speaker
Like these, these are parts of the course that we're even just running on the boardwalk to be quite honest with you.
00:16:12
Speaker
Yeah.
00:16:13
Speaker
It's because it's not overly Disney,

Challenges of Registration

00:16:16
Speaker
you know, moment.
00:16:17
Speaker
And there's, it's not a curated thing.
00:16:19
Speaker
Like it can wear down on you when you've done it.
00:16:22
Speaker
How about finishing in the same place every time in Epcot in the parking lot?
00:16:27
Speaker
That's a good point.
00:16:28
Speaker
And AJ's like, we're so close.
00:16:30
Speaker
We're almost there.
00:16:30
Speaker
Give it all you've got.
00:16:31
Speaker
And now I know after having done it 16 times, we are not almost there.
00:16:35
Speaker
There's like three more turns.
00:16:37
Speaker
Right.
00:16:37
Speaker
It's like a false finish.
00:16:39
Speaker
Right.
00:16:39
Speaker
And I say, hey, we're almost there.
00:16:41
Speaker
That's right.
00:16:41
Speaker
Yeah.
00:16:42
Speaker
Yeah.
00:16:43
Speaker
So that's starting to become a little bit of a negative.
00:16:46
Speaker
But again, that's a nitpicky thing.
00:16:49
Speaker
It is.
00:16:49
Speaker
And it's actually exactly my number two.
00:16:51
Speaker
I think it was worded exactly the same way.
00:16:53
Speaker
The course hasn't changed much.
00:16:57
Speaker
That was my number two reason why you might not want to do it.
00:16:59
Speaker
So we're, and I already said my piece about it.
00:17:01
Speaker
We're totally aligned on that.
00:17:02
Speaker
I think what we found in our upcoming season is that...
00:17:06
Speaker
We've registered for specific races versus trying to grab everything for that weekend because we've done the 5Ks or the 10Ks enough.
00:17:15
Speaker
And those really don't change that we've decided we're doing the half.
00:17:22
Speaker
Right.
00:17:22
Speaker
We're only doing a half on the weekend.
00:17:24
Speaker
Instead of a challenge.
00:17:24
Speaker
Instead of, yeah, a challenge is when you do multiple on a weekend and we've decided not to do some of those.
00:17:30
Speaker
I think that's evidence of we're getting a little tired of the courses.
00:17:33
Speaker
Now, once we're there, it's all fun.
00:17:37
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:17:37
Speaker
It's kind of when you're sitting at home and you're like, oh, they're not changing the course again.
00:17:41
Speaker
That's kind of a bummer.
00:17:41
Speaker
It would be fun if they changed it up, but we understand why they don't.
00:17:45
Speaker
Oh, logistics.
00:17:46
Speaker
We totally understand.
00:17:47
Speaker
And, and, and yeah, yeah, I get that for sure.
00:17:50
Speaker
All right.
00:17:50
Speaker
My number what three or is that where we're on?
00:17:53
Speaker
Yeah.
00:17:54
Speaker
My number three is you skipped my number two.
00:17:58
Speaker
Oh, what's your number two?
00:17:59
Speaker
That most of our training is done in either extreme heat or extreme cold.
00:18:03
Speaker
Oh, that's true.
00:18:04
Speaker
Yeah.
00:18:05
Speaker
So like, do you think that's just because where we live?
00:18:08
Speaker
I don't, maybe, I don't know.
00:18:10
Speaker
It is so freaking hot and humid right now.
00:18:13
Speaker
Yes.
00:18:13
Speaker
And like, we, yeah, it's so hard to find a time to run.
00:18:17
Speaker
I, AJ loves to run in the morning.
00:18:19
Speaker
I hate running in the morning.
00:18:20
Speaker
I just don't like getting out of bed period, but, but I enjoy running in the evening, even if it's like a little bit warmer, but I mean, this week, especially we're dealing with like
00:18:30
Speaker
you know, 98 degrees with like 72.
00:18:32
Speaker
And then it'll thunderstorm in the afternoon.
00:18:34
Speaker
Yeah, yeah.
00:18:34
Speaker
And it's steamy.
00:18:36
Speaker
Yeah, so, so humid.
00:18:37
Speaker
And so it's, I feel like we're either running in that or, you know, when we're getting ready for marathon in January and we're spending the weekends running, you know, like four hours or something.
00:18:49
Speaker
And it's like a feels like temp of 20 degrees.
00:18:54
Speaker
Like those are the things that you're not thinking about when you're registering so far in advance is like when we're training,
00:19:00
Speaker
You know, I understand why they don't do races in the summer because race day would be hot.
00:19:05
Speaker
Yes.
00:19:06
Speaker
But there's so many weekends and months and months of training where you're running and it's like either freezing or burning hot.
00:19:13
Speaker
So that's one of my.
00:19:15
Speaker
At least we don't live in New York or Canada where it's like negative.

Course Layouts & Training Struggles

00:19:20
Speaker
20.
00:19:21
Speaker
Right.
00:19:21
Speaker
Yes.
00:19:22
Speaker
And for everyone listening to this, who's like, why don't they run on the treadmill?
00:19:25
Speaker
Uh, that's why I heard what you said.
00:19:27
Speaker
It's the treadmill, the treadmill, not, I do not want to run on the treadmill.
00:19:32
Speaker
Although this summer I may end up on it, but if it works for you run on the treadmill, yeah, totally.
00:19:37
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:19:37
Speaker
There, you know, you get, in my opinion, you get more benefit running outside because of elevation changes and having to deal with uneven ground and, and,
00:19:47
Speaker
adjusting to the humidity or the weather.
00:19:49
Speaker
You get more benefit in my opinion, but, um, and it's realistic for race day.
00:19:53
Speaker
I mean, it's not like you can throw a movie on your, on your iPad and watch it run.
00:19:57
Speaker
So I would not exclusively train on the treadmill, but if you, if, if it works for you.
00:20:01
Speaker
And you can get your mileage in and build your cardio, all that, whatever.
00:20:04
Speaker
That's how I trained for First Princess.
00:20:06
Speaker
You did?
00:20:06
Speaker
Was on a treadmill exclusively.
00:20:08
Speaker
Wow.
00:20:09
Speaker
Oh, you're not doing that again?
00:20:10
Speaker
No.
00:20:11
Speaker
I see your face.
00:20:12
Speaker
No.
00:20:13
Speaker
Okay.
00:20:14
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:14
Speaker
I agree with you.
00:20:15
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:15
Speaker
The training months are hard.
00:20:17
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:18
Speaker
Okay.
00:20:19
Speaker
My last one is it's expensive.
00:20:22
Speaker
Yes.
00:20:23
Speaker
Uh, the more I realized like other races are expensive too.
00:20:27
Speaker
So you want to do New York city, you get, you're able to get in.
00:20:29
Speaker
It's going to be expensive.
00:20:30
Speaker
Your hotel's expensive.
00:20:31
Speaker
The flights are expensive.
00:20:32
Speaker
You know, the, you know, it just is, you've got to buy a new pair of shoes because you wore them out training, you know, like, so I get that it's not exclusive to Disney, but this is not cheap because you walk into the expo and you see the merchandise and you need it.
00:20:48
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:49
Speaker
You need it.
00:20:49
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:50
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:50
Speaker
Well, quote quotes on the need, I guess.
00:20:52
Speaker
Right.
00:20:53
Speaker
But it can be expensive.
00:20:54
Speaker
And we know that staying at Disney is not, not cheap.
00:20:57
Speaker
Right.
00:20:57
Speaker
So you want to add two or three park days.
00:21:00
Speaker
Oh, I should bring my family.
00:21:02
Speaker
Next thing you know, you're just adding, adding a lot.
00:21:04
Speaker
So, um,
00:21:05
Speaker
I still think it's worth it.
00:21:07
Speaker
Yes.
00:21:07
Speaker
For all the top 10 reasons we said, but it, uh, it can be expensive.
00:21:12
Speaker
Yes.
00:21:12
Speaker
Okay.
00:21:13
Speaker
What's your last?
00:21:13
Speaker
My last one was one that we already said that you just have to register way in advance and you have no idea what injury you might be dealing with.
00:21:20
Speaker
What family situation you might be dealing with.
00:21:24
Speaker
Yeah.
00:21:24
Speaker
You get hurt.
00:21:25
Speaker
Like, you know what I mean?
00:21:27
Speaker
Like anything like that, that, that'll impact it for sure.
00:21:29
Speaker
Yeah.
00:21:29
Speaker
Yeah, for sure.
00:21:30
Speaker
This, this last year's princess was hard because we had done the goofy challenge, which is like 40 miles and in a 24 hour period and for marathon weekend.
00:21:40
Speaker
And I was like super injured after that.
00:21:44
Speaker
And so princess, I did not get to go, um,
00:21:48
Speaker
I was about to say I didn't get to go as fast as I would like to.
00:21:50
Speaker
I mean, I was like mostly walking, I think.
00:21:53
Speaker
But, um, so, but those are not, those are the things that you don't know when you register for the race so many months in advance.
00:21:58
Speaker
So that, that makes it kind of difficult, but it does overall, you feel like the top 10 that we, that we listed outweigh the bottom six or whatever.
00:22:09
Speaker
Yeah, totally.
00:22:10
Speaker
It's still, the races are still worth doing.
00:22:12
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:22:13
Speaker
It's still my favorite place to run.
00:22:16
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:16
Speaker
You, I don't notice that with you when we're at Disney.
00:22:20
Speaker
I notice it with you when we run somewhere else.
00:22:23
Speaker
Yes.
00:22:24
Speaker
How opinionated you are.
00:22:25
Speaker
Oh yes.
00:22:26
Speaker
About all the things, how organized it is, how fun it is, you know, all the things like, I don't even want to bring other races to you anymore because I could just feel the eye roll.
00:22:36
Speaker
They're just like, okay, fine.
00:22:39
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:40
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:40
Speaker
They're like I said, not, not as magical.
00:22:42
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:43
Speaker
Yes.
00:22:45
Speaker
Okay.
00:22:45
Speaker
I feel like that covered it well.
00:22:48
Speaker
Just a heads up for folks.
00:22:49
Speaker
We name dropped a lot of things.
00:22:51
Speaker
We just keep seeing things like at Princess, at Marathon Weekend, all these things.
00:22:54
Speaker
Our next episode, we're going to cover all the...
00:22:58
Speaker
race weekends that are available.
00:23:00
Speaker
So a lot of that, sorry for name dropping.
00:23:02
Speaker
A lot of that's going to make a lot more sense here in our next episode next week, where we're just going to break it down.
00:23:08
Speaker
This is when this race is.
00:23:09
Speaker
This is why you should or shouldn't do this specific race weekend.
00:23:12
Speaker
There's four in Florida, two in California, which are going away.
00:23:17
Speaker
Sorry, but they got a virtual series.
00:23:18
Speaker
We're going to explain the whole thing.
00:23:20
Speaker
So if some of that was kind of, if you felt like we were talking insider language, we're going to clarify that.
00:23:24
Speaker
Yes.
00:23:25
Speaker
next week.
00:23:26
Speaker
Okay.
00:23:27
Speaker
Erica, really fast.
00:23:28
Speaker
I mean, 60 seconds or less, if you want any training, personal, anything you want to share about just kind of where you are.
00:23:35
Speaker
So marathon training starts now this week for us starts marathon training, 29 weeks, anything as you head in to training that you just kind of want to share or document.
00:23:47
Speaker
Yeah.
00:23:47
Speaker
So like I was saying, when we finished up the run Disney race race season last, Oh my gosh.
00:23:55
Speaker
That's okay.
00:23:56
Speaker
We're not cutting out the bloopers in the podcast.
00:23:57
Speaker
Oh, we're not cutting this out.
00:23:58
Speaker
Okay, great.
00:23:59
Speaker
Okay.
00:24:00
Speaker
So not in the podcast.
00:24:02
Speaker
Hopefully I get better at this.
00:24:04
Speaker
Um, as I was saying, um, after we came back from princess this last year, which was like three weekends or something after marathon weekend, um,
00:24:12
Speaker
I was super injured.
00:24:14
Speaker
I have basically run injured for like the last two years at least.
00:24:16
Speaker
And so my physical therapist was like,
00:24:20
Speaker
like that's it, no running for two months.
00:24:22
Speaker
Like we're gonna work on like cross training and get you super strong, like in areas that you need for running, but no running for two months.
00:24:30
Speaker
And running is like this terrible sport where if you stop, even for like a week, it's like starting over basically.
00:24:37
Speaker
It is terrible.
00:24:39
Speaker
And so I basically started over this last month.
00:24:44
Speaker
This was my first month back to running since February.
00:24:47
Speaker
And so-
00:24:49
Speaker
I will say that I am right there with everybody listening to this podcast.
00:24:52
Speaker
Um, you're doing it in the heat of the summer, in the heat of the summer.
00:24:56
Speaker
Um, like having not run for several months and just feeling like, did I really run 40 miles in January?
00:25:01
Speaker
I don't think I did.
00:25:02
Speaker
Like I can barely run four miles right now.
00:25:04
Speaker
Um, but to that, I would say, remember that you can do hard

Podcast Engagement & Conclusion

00:25:08
Speaker
things.
00:25:08
Speaker
Like you are so much stronger than you think you are.
00:25:10
Speaker
And when you want to quit, um,
00:25:12
Speaker
Give it 10 more seconds.

Speaker
Like that's what I always tell myself.
00:25:15
Speaker
Like just run for 10 more seconds before you take a quick walk break and then get back into it.
00:25:19
Speaker
Cause you can do it.
00:25:20
Speaker
I'm very inspired to go for a run right now.
00:25:23
Speaker
Well, that's good.
00:25:23
Speaker
I'm about to go run five miles.
00:25:25
Speaker
You want to go with me?
00:25:26
Speaker
Um, I ran this morning because I love to run in the morning.
00:25:29
Speaker
I slept this morning.
00:25:31
Speaker
I'm good.
00:25:32
Speaker
Erica, this was a ton of fun.
00:25:33
Speaker
I'm excited about our journey with this podcast.
00:25:35
Speaker
Um,
00:25:36
Speaker
Whatever it means, right?
00:25:37
Speaker
So if we do the 29 weeks and that was it, and we share the information we know and people got what they needed, but we don't need to do it anymore, fine.
00:25:44
Speaker
And if people love it, then awesome.
00:25:46
Speaker
And if it's four listeners or 400, it doesn't matter.
00:25:49
Speaker
We're going to share what we know to hopefully encourage people to feel prepared, right?
00:25:54
Speaker
To maybe even inspired, you know, all that stuff.
00:25:57
Speaker
So next week we're talking about all the races.
00:26:00
Speaker
Yes.
00:26:01
Speaker
Uh, do me a favor.
00:26:02
Speaker
If you don't mind, uh, leave us a comment, shoot us a message.
00:26:06
Speaker
If you, if there's something you, you want us to talk about, we'll happily do it.
00:26:09
Speaker
Uh, and leave us a review.
00:26:11
Speaker
We have no reviews yet because this is the first podcast and it would, it would kind of be encouraging to get a review.
00:26:17
Speaker
Uh, hopefully it's a positive one.
00:26:18
Speaker
Right.
00:26:19
Speaker
