Introduction and Cost Concerns
00:00:00
Speaker
Run Disney can be an expensive endeavor.
00:00:02
Speaker
So today we're talking about all the ways we try and save money when traveling to Walt Disney World for a Run Disney Race Beginner.
Podcast Goals
00:00:18
Speaker
Welcome to One More Run, the podcast.
00:00:20
Speaker
This is episode seven.
00:00:22
Speaker
I'm Erica and this is AJ.
00:00:23
Speaker
And the goal of this podcast is just to share some of the tricks that we've learned doing Run Disney throughout the years.
00:00:29
Speaker
And we want to share those with you so that you can have a successful race.
Future Topics Teaser
00:00:33
Speaker
Today, we are talking about all the ways to save money while doing a run Disney race weekend, or at least the ways we try to.
00:00:40
Speaker
And we have some exciting topics coming up over the next couple of weeks.
00:00:44
Speaker
And I thought it'd be fun to tease those out.
00:00:46
Speaker
So next week, we're talking about staying on Disney property.
00:00:49
Speaker
I'm going to do my best, Erica, to not like spoil all of that today.
00:00:54
Speaker
As we talk about saving money on property, I'm going to try and save, you know, all the things about
00:01:00
Speaker
The pros, the cons, the ways we, you know, get around the things we do, the things we don't do when we're on property.
00:01:06
Speaker
The week after that, we're going to talk about all the things we use when we run.
00:01:10
Speaker
So that's all the gear, right?
00:01:15
Speaker
the watches we wear.
00:01:17
Speaker
People ask me that.
00:01:18
Speaker
You get quite, you get that question a lot from people.
00:01:21
Speaker
People always asking me, what shoes do you wear?
00:01:24
Speaker
Um, so that'll be in two weeks and then three weeks from now, we're going to talk nutrition.
00:01:29
Speaker
So everything that we eat on our own, uh, pre-race, post-race, all that.
00:01:34
Speaker
These are the questions we get a lot.
00:01:36
Speaker
So we're going to share some of that, uh, heads up as we get into this episode, we've actually recorded this episode
Technical Issues
00:01:44
Speaker
This is episode, as you like to call it, Erica.
00:01:48
Speaker
7B, because 7A was the last 45 minutes.
00:01:53
Speaker
And I looked over at the recorder and realized that Erica's mic was on mute.
00:01:57
Speaker
So if we're a little punchy in this episode...
00:02:01
Speaker
Or it feels like, you know, Erica's a little snarky at me or I feel apologetic the whole time.
00:02:08
Speaker
It's because we're going at this for the second time.
00:02:12
Speaker
And on that super positive note, would you like to read this week's review?
00:02:17
Speaker
We got a review and we actually skipped it last week.
00:02:21
Speaker
We actually, you know, we got our first review.
00:02:23
Speaker
We were so excited.
00:02:23
Speaker
Then we were so excited about it that in the next episode, we were at another review, but we skipped one.
00:02:28
Speaker
So you want to read it?
00:02:29
Speaker
Yes, this is from Mama1128.
00:02:32
Speaker
She says, now I'm interested.
00:02:34
Speaker
We threw out the idea of participating in our first Run Disney event over the weekend, and now I'm in research mode.
00:02:41
Speaker
Looking forward to this podcast series.
00:02:43
Speaker
Thanks for walking us through.
00:02:46
Speaker
Well, Mama, whatever the number was, one, two, whatever the number was, this is your episode because we're talking about, if you're in research mode, we're talking about the ways to save money.
00:02:56
Speaker
At least the ways we try to.
00:02:58
Speaker
So that is today's
Budgeting for Run Disney Events
00:03:00
Speaker
If you leave a review, by the way, on Apple Podcasts, Erica will read it on the air, won't you?
00:03:05
Speaker
We love getting those.
00:03:06
Speaker
I mean, they do feel good, but not just for our sake.
00:03:09
Speaker
We like reading those because it's affirming for us that the information we're sharing is helpful.
00:03:14
Speaker
We also love the feedback so that we know that what we're sharing is helpful.
00:03:18
Speaker
So if you leave a review, we will read it.
00:03:21
Speaker
Today's topic, dun, dun, dun, is run Disney on a budget.
00:03:24
Speaker
Erica, do you think it's even possible to do run Disney at a reasonable price?
00:03:33
Speaker
I mean, it's going to be a little bit more than other races.
00:03:36
Speaker
But I think that if you go into it, you know, the budget with some, some willpower, especially on the shopping side of things, you can do it.
00:03:46
Speaker
You can do it on a budget.
00:03:48
Speaker
We're going to share our 15 things that we do to save money at Run Disney.
Booking Disney Hotels
00:03:54
Speaker
What I can't help you with is saving money on the registration.
00:03:56
Speaker
There is no way around that one.
00:03:58
Speaker
So just a heads up, if you're looking for a discount code or something on.
00:04:01
Speaker
Those don't exist.
00:04:04
Speaker
I mean, you can't even transfer or defer like that.
00:04:07
Speaker
That price is that price.
00:04:09
Speaker
Just you're going to have to.
00:04:10
Speaker
So we can't help you there.
00:04:11
Speaker
But let's talk about ways we do try and save money.
00:04:14
Speaker
We'll just go all 15.
00:04:16
Speaker
I'm going to knock out the first three because they're the three things I handle.
00:04:20
Speaker
For the most part.
00:04:21
Speaker
The first one is booking your Disney hotel.
00:04:23
Speaker
My suggestion is that you book it early, as soon as you can.
00:04:26
Speaker
So if you know you're going, even if...
00:04:28
Speaker
I mean, I would even say even if you don't have a race registration yet, you can book your hotel if you know you want to go or you are going.
00:04:34
Speaker
Book your hotel the minute you can because you can always cancel it.
00:04:38
Speaker
Disney doesn't have a cancellation fee or anything unless you get right up to the date.
00:04:43
Speaker
But you can always find a cheaper – not always.
00:04:47
Speaker
Let me rephrase that.
00:04:48
Speaker
You can always check back to see if the hotel is cheaper.
00:05:10
Speaker
You pay $300 even though your total is $1,200.
00:05:13
Speaker
You pay the $300 and you can change your hotel as many times as you'd like all the way up to like two weeks before.
00:05:21
Speaker
So I've done that plenty of times where I just locked in a hotel.
00:05:25
Speaker
And then I have found, oh, wow, they're running a special now.
00:05:31
Speaker
I can get the same room or maybe a different hotel or a better hotel.
00:05:35
Speaker
So check back often.
00:05:36
Speaker
If you use a travel agent, they can do that for you.
00:05:38
Speaker
And that's one of the things is they're like, we'll always check for discounts for you.
00:05:41
Speaker
We don't use a travel agent.
00:05:42
Speaker
I am not against it in any way.
00:05:44
Speaker
I'm just a control freak.
00:05:46
Speaker
And so I like to do that myself.
00:05:49
Speaker
Another way is flights.
Finding Cheap Airfare
00:05:52
Speaker
Google flights is a feature where you go in, search your flight, put it in your airline if that matters to you, put in the days you want to fly.
00:06:00
Speaker
You can even select specific flights.
00:06:01
Speaker
And then you hit the track flights button and it will email you when those flight prices change up or down.
00:06:09
Speaker
I know how much it costs to fly from Atlanta to MCO, which is the Orlando airport.
00:06:14
Speaker
I know the absolute rock bottom minimum or lowest I've ever paid.
00:06:18
Speaker
So if it ever hits that number, I just booked the flight instantly, right?
00:06:22
Speaker
I get an email notification that says, hey, yesterday the flight was 297, today it's 258.
00:06:26
Speaker
All right, bam, okay, perfect.
00:06:30
Speaker
I'm going to get it.
00:06:31
Speaker
We also book with miles sometimes.
00:06:32
Speaker
So we use our SkyMiles to do that.
00:06:34
Speaker
Last one, I said I was going to do the first three.
00:06:37
Speaker
And then I got some questions for you.
00:06:39
Speaker
I use the Mears shuttle to get from the airport to the hotel and the hotel back.
00:06:45
Speaker
I think it's $14 a person.
Airport Shuttle Options
00:06:49
Speaker
To me, that's cheaper than an Uber if it's the two of us.
00:06:51
Speaker
So let's say it's $14 a person.
00:06:54
Speaker
That's $28 plus a tip for the bag handling and whatever.
00:06:58
Speaker
And that to me is easier and cheaper than doing an Uber.
00:07:03
Speaker
We're standing on the curb, like looking for the guy, you know, and you're standing there with all your luggage.
00:07:07
Speaker
You just walk to the bus.
00:07:08
Speaker
They throw it in for you.
00:07:10
Speaker
How do you feel about the bus?
00:07:11
Speaker
Because, I mean, the bus isn't for everybody, but.
00:07:15
Speaker
They like play a little movie while we're driving and it's fine.
00:07:20
Speaker
Cheap and it gets us there.
00:07:21
Speaker
I'd rather spend the money on something else.
00:07:24
Speaker
Rather than an Uber XL.
00:07:26
Speaker
Where you have to talk to the guy about his music career.
00:07:29
Speaker
Well, and you never know how they're going to drive.
00:07:31
Speaker
Sometimes I get car sick, so.
00:07:33
Speaker
So, oh, I guess another positive to the bus, there's a bathroom on it.
00:07:37
Speaker
I've never used it.
00:07:38
Speaker
Me either, I don't think.
00:07:39
Speaker
But you don't have to talk to the driver.
00:07:41
Speaker
I mean, you could if you want.
00:07:43
Speaker
You don't have to talk to the driver.
00:07:44
Speaker
You don't have to wait very long.
00:07:45
Speaker
There's a bathroom on board.
00:07:47
Speaker
I think it's a win.
00:07:49
Speaker
Take the Mirrors Connect shuttle if you want.
00:07:52
Speaker
If you don't want to, fine.
00:07:54
Speaker
Number four, Erica, you want to take
Choosing Disney Resorts
00:07:56
Speaker
So we do stay on property, but we typically stay at a moderate resort.
00:08:01
Speaker
Why do we do that, Erica?
00:08:03
Speaker
You want to share?
00:08:06
Speaker
Actually, we should clarify.
00:08:07
Speaker
Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry.
00:08:09
Speaker
Disney has three levels of hotel.
00:08:12
Speaker
Can you describe it quickly for people who don't know?
00:08:14
Speaker
Deluxe, fancy schmancy.
00:08:16
Speaker
Moderate, like nice middle of the road.
00:08:22
Speaker
Like what's the nice way that they say that?
00:08:24
Speaker
It's like a cheap motel.
00:08:27
Speaker
Oh, ow, I don't think it's that bad.
00:08:30
Speaker
Okay, well, it is the cheaper of the hotels.
00:08:34
Speaker
Some of them are better than others, but...
00:08:37
Speaker
Let's just go ahead and call it out.
00:08:38
Speaker
Don't stay at All Stars, in my opinion.
00:08:42
Speaker
Pop Century and Art of Animation are good.
00:08:44
Speaker
If you're going to stay value, stay there.
00:08:46
Speaker
Stay at one of those two.
00:08:46
Speaker
And the reason we avoid those is because they're the cheapest, which means they draw the most amount of kids and large cheerleading groups because they're the cheaper ones.
00:08:57
Speaker
So you get some group that's on band camp.
00:09:01
Speaker
And they're all up till midnight and you're trying to go to bed at seven.
00:09:06
Speaker
Those groups are not at, and the toddlers, it doesn't seem like, are not wandering around loudly at the moderates.
00:09:15
Speaker
There's a lot less like running in the hallways, screaming.
00:09:18
Speaker
You don't hear them from the pool.
00:09:21
Speaker
Yeah, they're definitely quieter.
00:09:23
Speaker
I actually like that the moderates, for the most part, are really close to Epcot, which is where the races start and finish.
00:09:29
Speaker
And so your bus ride on race day and even to the expo seems short, easy.
00:09:35
Speaker
They haven't gotten lost yet.
00:09:37
Speaker
Yeah, that seems to be a problem for the deluxe resorts is that the buses get lost trying to find their way from the Magic Kingdom Resort area trying to get to Epcot.
00:09:50
Speaker
Because the roads are closed.
00:09:52
Speaker
So like the race course is already set up over by, you know, between Magic Kingdom and Epcot.
00:09:57
Speaker
And now this bus has to get from Fort Wilderness or the Contemporary is at the Magic Kingdom, but the roads are closed.
00:10:06
Speaker
So it has to find a way around the race course.
00:10:10
Speaker
And I feel like that's how they get lost.
00:10:12
Speaker
And they're not regular Disney buses.
00:10:17
Speaker
And so those drivers, I'm sure, have done their best.
00:10:19
Speaker
But like it's two in the morning.
00:10:22
Speaker
You know, they're running on coffee.
00:10:25
Speaker
And you got 50 runners in the back, you know, freaking out because they're going to miss the race.
00:10:30
Speaker
And I'm sure I'm probably high pressure for them.
00:10:35
Speaker
I like a deluxe resort.
00:10:37
Speaker
Don't get me wrong.
00:10:37
Speaker
I like staying there.
00:10:38
Speaker
But on a race weekend, it's expensive.
00:10:41
Speaker
All the hotels are more expensive on a race weekend than a regular weekend.
00:10:45
Speaker
Because they know everyone's coming.
00:10:46
Speaker
They know we're coming.
00:10:47
Speaker
And so I have found that it's just not worth the deluxe price for me.
00:10:53
Speaker
Moderates, in my opinion, that's the way to go.
00:10:55
Speaker
If you have Marriott points, this is tip number five.
00:10:58
Speaker
If you have Marriott points, you can actually stay at one of the Marriott resorts on property.
00:11:02
Speaker
So you get a lot of the benefits of being on Disney property.
00:11:05
Speaker
You don't have to drive in.
00:11:06
Speaker
You don't have to deal with any of that or parking or anything like that.
00:11:10
Speaker
But you can use your Marriott points.
00:11:11
Speaker
So the Swan and Dolphin is one of them.
00:11:13
Speaker
And then the Swan Reserve is the other.
00:11:15
Speaker
And you can, if you have Marriott points, which we usually like to stay Marriott when we're not at Disney, you can use those points to stay at either one of those resorts.
00:11:24
Speaker
Number six on our list, Erica, this one's going to hurt.
00:11:27
Speaker
I know this one's tricky, but be selective with the merchandise
Managing Merchandise Spending
00:11:31
Speaker
You need to set a limit before you go in.
00:11:35
Speaker
When you say merchandise, where and what are you talking about?
00:11:38
Speaker
Yeah, so when you go the first day to pick up your race bundle, packet, whatever, there are two buildings that you're gonna go into.
00:11:48
Speaker
One of them is set up with vendors that sell all different types of things unrelated to Disney.
00:11:54
Speaker
You might find some clothes, some companies sell costumes that people will wear when they're running on the course.
00:12:00
Speaker
They're just vendors, right?
00:12:01
Speaker
They're not- Just typical vendors.
00:12:01
Speaker
They have anything to do with Disney.
00:12:04
Speaker
You'll see some shoes, things like that.
00:12:06
Speaker
The other building has stuff that's specific to Disney.
00:12:09
Speaker
So you're going to find general run Disney merchandise and then merchandise that is, um, for each race weekend.
00:12:16
Speaker
So each race that they offer that weekend, as well as the challenge, you will find a merchandise there that has all that on it.
00:12:23
Speaker
I have a bunch of clarifying questions.
00:12:25
Speaker
The generic or general run Disney merchandise is themed kind of like it just says run Disney or it has Mickey on it.
00:12:33
Speaker
And it's themed for the entire race season.
00:12:36
Speaker
So if you like it and you're not going to be back and whatever, they're most likely not going to have that again in the next race season.
00:12:46
Speaker
So season is September to April, right?
00:12:49
Speaker
They're not going to have it next season.
00:12:51
Speaker
So I bought a hat that I loved last year because I knew, you know, even though, you know, it wasn't themed to the weekend, it was themed to the year.
00:13:02
Speaker
And then they have a weekend specific.
00:13:04
Speaker
This is where people go crazy.
00:13:06
Speaker
Is they're trying to get the things that you can only get that weekend says marathon on it or half marathon, you know, Disney princess half marathon.
00:13:14
Speaker
And it's got whatever the princess is on it.
00:13:16
Speaker
Like for that specific year, that's the stuff people go crazy for.
00:13:20
Speaker
Would you say, I would say, would you say this is like a Black Friday situation in that building?
00:13:27
Speaker
People are losing their minds.
00:13:29
Speaker
So typically, you know, like the first day, if you want to go, you have to get a virtual queue to get in.
00:13:37
Speaker
The reason why you do this is because, you know, by the last day before the races start, there's hardly anyone in there, but there may not be much left or not much left in the size that you need.
00:13:47
Speaker
Have you ever been to Target at the end of Black Friday?
00:13:52
Speaker
I only did Black Friday one time.
00:13:54
Speaker
But like if you go to Black Friday, you know, like the real Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day, whatever.
00:14:01
Speaker
And you might get a 60-inch TV.
00:14:04
Speaker
If you go at 4 p.m.
00:14:05
Speaker
on Black Friday, it looks like a tornado hit the store.
00:14:09
Speaker
And there's nothing left except for the ones you don't actually want.
00:14:13
Speaker
Or not in your size or whatever.
00:14:15
Speaker
Same thing applies here.
00:14:17
Speaker
You're going to come in and it's going to look picked over.
00:14:20
Speaker
There's going to be stuff.
00:14:21
Speaker
And if something wasn't a hit, then that's what's going to be left.
00:14:26
Speaker
Or if it's an odd size or they didn't order enough of one size, which is kind of random too because sometimes, like I wear a small.
00:14:34
Speaker
Sometimes I go and there's no smalls.
00:14:36
Speaker
I mean, we go in the first day, within the first two hours, we get a virtual queue, we do the whole thing.
00:14:41
Speaker
Like, where are all the smalls?
00:14:43
Speaker
I feel like some years, like all they have left is really small.
00:14:46
Speaker
Or the next year, all they have left is really large.
00:14:49
Speaker
Like there's, it's like, you think that after years of doing this, like they would be able to figure, figure this out.
00:14:55
Speaker
But, but yeah, it's usually like one group of sizes will sell out just really quickly.
00:15:01
Speaker
So it does seem a little bit random.
00:15:04
Speaker
But that's the benefit of going early.
00:15:07
Speaker
But the benefit of going, the bad thing about going early is you can get caught up in all of that craziness and buying stuff you didn't really even need or want.
00:15:15
Speaker
Which is what we're trying to suggest you don't do.
00:15:20
Speaker
At least that's what I do.
00:15:21
Speaker
I tell myself, AJ, you can spend $200.
00:15:26
Speaker
And knowing that, I can't buy the jacket for $120.
00:15:31
Speaker
And the hat and the mug and the hens and whatever, you know, like all this stuff.
00:15:37
Speaker
If I set my limit, I know, hey, with that limit, AJ, choose, prioritize.
00:15:42
Speaker
Hats are important to me.
00:15:44
Speaker
The corksicle cups are important to me.
00:15:47
Speaker
You've collected every magnet.
00:15:50
Speaker
I think we have every Christmas ornament too.
00:15:52
Speaker
And so these are things also, I'm moving on to another point, is that we, these are things AJ and Erica know we will use.
00:15:59
Speaker
Versus seeing something.
00:16:01
Speaker
Have you ever seen something?
00:16:02
Speaker
This happens to me.
00:16:02
Speaker
Seeing something and it's awesome, but you actually, if you really sit and think about it for a second, when are you going to use it?
00:16:09
Speaker
Do you have anything like that?
00:16:12
Speaker
I, I, I, where I see this the most is like a jacket or a shirt where I see it and it looks cool.
00:16:17
Speaker
And oh my gosh, they have two left in my size and I'm about to grab it.
00:16:21
Speaker
And then I think, but where am I going to wear this shirt with Tiana?
00:16:27
Speaker
For you, especially like princess weekend.
00:16:29
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:16:30
Speaker
Like I'm not going to wear that at home.
00:16:32
Speaker
You know, or, um, I mean, I love Mickey Mouse, but the reality is I'm not going to wear a lot of Mickey Mouse.
00:16:38
Speaker
Especially not at work.
00:16:39
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:16:43
Speaker
Where am I really going to use this?
00:16:47
Speaker
Something that, um, I didn't know the first time that I ran is that when you pick up your bib, you're going to get a shirt that says, well, depending on the participants, right?
00:16:56
Speaker
So like if you, however many of the races that you do, you're going to get shirts that have all of those races on them.
00:17:02
Speaker
They look very similar to the ones that they're selling in the expo.
00:17:05
Speaker
So, you know, don't think like, well, if I don't buy a shirt that says half marathon, I'm not going to get a half marathon shirt.
00:17:11
Speaker
You will, it will be with your bib.
00:17:13
Speaker
It's, you know, very similar.
00:17:15
Speaker
I'd like to go back in time, Erica, if it's okay, and amend something you said.
00:17:18
Speaker
You said when you go to the expo, there's two buildings.
00:17:22
Speaker
Can I amend that to say that there are three buildings?
00:17:25
Speaker
I just meant like there are two where you can buy things.
00:17:29
Speaker
There are three buildings.
00:17:31
Speaker
This is a totally different episode.
00:17:32
Speaker
I was going to say, we will go into great detail.
00:17:34
Speaker
One is where you pick up your bib.
00:17:36
Speaker
Another is where you pick up your shirt and you buy vendor stuff.
00:17:38
Speaker
And the third building is where you do the run Disney stuff.
00:17:40
Speaker
I just didn't want anyone to get confused and where they were like, wait a minute, my event guide says there's three buildings.
00:17:46
Speaker
Listen to the one about Expo.
00:17:49
Speaker
Anything else on trying to save money at the Expo?
Dining Strategies for Runners
00:17:54
Speaker
Tip number seven is related to food.
00:17:58
Speaker
but we try and eat quick service or counter service would be another way to say that right uh meals while we're at the parks or we'll snack we actually try to avoid um what do you call it when you sit down a sit down yeah is that what it's called yeah sit down yeah like a fancy restaurant yeah dine in yeah we try to avoid it not because we don't like them but because they're expensive yeah i mean especially with disney and we're trying to eat lighter
00:18:27
Speaker
When we go for a race weekend.
00:18:29
Speaker
I don't want to introduce anything new on race weekend that I haven't had before or often.
00:18:35
Speaker
And usually those sit down places, you know, it's very specialty stuff, you know?
00:18:40
Speaker
And so I don't want to introduce anything crazy like that.
00:18:43
Speaker
I thought it'd be kind of fun, Erica, to talk briefly without going into like crazy detail about some of the places that we do actually get quick service meals and things.
00:18:53
Speaker
Maybe, I mean, we don't have to do like every park or whatever, but where do we like to get something to eat?
00:19:00
Speaker
So pretty much our number one go-to is at Hollywood Studios, and that is Fairfax Fair, which you will find by Tower of Terror.
00:19:07
Speaker
And we like to get a bowl there.
00:19:09
Speaker
You can tell them about it.
00:19:10
Speaker
Oh, I love this bowl.
00:19:11
Speaker
And by the way, I eat it when we go to Disney, no matter what.
00:19:16
Speaker
But it's a race weekend thing for us now, specifically.
00:19:19
Speaker
It's a... This sounds crazy.
00:19:21
Speaker
It's a waffle cone bowl.
00:19:23
Speaker
It looks like the size of an ice cream bowl, right?
00:19:26
Speaker
Waffle cone bowl filled with mashed potatoes.
00:19:29
Speaker
A little bit of queso, I think.
00:19:33
Speaker
You can get different things.
00:19:34
Speaker
You can get buffalo chicken or something like that if you want.
00:19:37
Speaker
And jalapenos and like a little bit of pico or something on top.
00:19:40
Speaker
And corn chips, right?
00:19:42
Speaker
I think it's a waffle bowl.
00:19:47
Speaker
But they're not... What are those things called?
00:19:52
Speaker
Yeah, but I was thinking of the brand name.
00:19:55
Speaker
The reason I like it, one, it's delicious.
00:19:57
Speaker
Two, is because it's got a lot of positive vibes towards fueling you for your run.
00:20:02
Speaker
So it's got some carbs and some protein and things like that versus going over to wherever and getting like
00:20:08
Speaker
you know, fried chicken tenders and honey mustard sauce.
00:20:13
Speaker
You know, you want to avoid the heavy and the sauces and things like that.
00:20:16
Speaker
So we, we do like that at Hollywood studios.
00:20:19
Speaker
Um, is there any place you like to eat over at like, well, I don't know, magic kingdom.
00:20:24
Speaker
Yeah, we've eaten at Columbia Harbor House before.
00:20:27
Speaker
But typically, I'll just do like snacks in Magic Kingdom.
00:20:33
Speaker
Race weekend or not, I typically don't eat like meals at the Magic Kingdom.
00:20:36
Speaker
I'll snack my way through it.
00:20:38
Speaker
What are your favorites?
00:20:41
Speaker
The cream cheese pretzel, although it's not as great as it used to be.
00:20:45
Speaker
It used to be really good.
00:20:47
Speaker
That's over the lunching pad.
00:20:49
Speaker
I like just a regular pretzel.
00:20:54
Speaker
I'll do a corn dog.
00:20:56
Speaker
These are not good.
00:20:57
Speaker
Pre-race suggestions.
00:20:58
Speaker
Now that I'm saying they're not, no, not I'm saying it out loud.
00:21:01
Speaker
Maybe the magic kingdom isn't it.
00:21:02
Speaker
Now that I'm saying that I like to build my own popcorn.
00:21:08
Speaker
That's good after race snack.
00:21:11
Speaker
What I like to do though on a trip is I'll go to the Build Your Own Popcorn Station in the candy shop on Main Street and it's this huge bowl and you can put any flavor of popcorn you want or you can get multiple flavors, I think.
00:21:23
Speaker
And then any candy, any toppings, any, what do you call it?
00:21:27
Speaker
Drizzle on top of it, you know.
00:21:29
Speaker
And basically it's this huge bowl.
00:21:32
Speaker
I think it's a good value.
00:21:34
Speaker
Like the money I spend, I think it's $14 or 12, 13, $14 for this big bowl.
00:21:42
Speaker
And I eat on it all week while I'm there.
00:21:45
Speaker
And it doesn't go stale by the time I'm done with it.
00:21:47
Speaker
And I usually end up throwing away about half of it.
00:21:51
Speaker
But you might be right.
00:21:51
Speaker
It might not be a good pre-race thing.
00:21:55
Speaker
Anything over in Animal Kingdom or Epcot that you like?
00:21:59
Speaker
There's a bowl place in Animal Kingdom that we've eaten at before.
00:22:02
Speaker
Yeah, that's good.
00:22:03
Speaker
And it's very, you know, chicken and veggies and things like that.
00:22:07
Speaker
I think it's Satoly Canteen.
00:22:11
Speaker
You want to talk about our favorite snack at the Animal Kingdom?
00:22:13
Speaker
Again, probably not a good pre-race item, but favorite snack over there?
00:22:17
Speaker
You're talking about by Pandora?
00:22:20
Speaker
It's like this cream cheese, pineapple.
00:22:26
Speaker
It's got like, it's like rolled in sugar.
00:22:30
Speaker
It has like a sugar dusting on top of it.
00:22:34
Speaker
Erica and I will share meals a lot of times.
00:22:36
Speaker
We share a lot of meals.
00:22:37
Speaker
And so like, you know, we'll go and we'll order, you know, something from Columbia Harbor House and we'll just split it.
00:22:43
Speaker
One, to save money, but two, we just don't need that much food.
00:22:47
Speaker
No, don't split that.
00:22:49
Speaker
Because it's so good and it's actually pretty small.
00:22:52
Speaker
And it's, you know, three bucks or something like that.
00:22:57
Speaker
And Epcot, we usually, we eat a lot of Epcot food on vacation mode.
00:23:01
Speaker
But for race weekend mode, we will go to, you know that Mexican, I don't know the name of it.
00:23:07
Speaker
The Mexican restaurant on the water.
00:23:13
Speaker
But I don't know what it's called.
00:23:14
Speaker
But I'll get a rice bowl with chicken, you know, things like that, beans.
00:23:19
Speaker
And that's a good pre-race.
00:23:21
Speaker
And it's not expensive.
00:23:22
Speaker
I don't feel, you know, all these quick services are going to be in that $10, $12, $15 range.
00:23:27
Speaker
And if you split it, which we tend to do sometimes, then you're really saving money.
00:23:31
Speaker
What we'll do is we'll split a meal.
00:23:34
Speaker
And if we're satisfied, great, we move on.
00:23:36
Speaker
If we're not satisfied- Then we get a snack.
00:23:39
Speaker
Then we go get another snack or something like that.
00:23:41
Speaker
So we usually kind of like ramp up to rather than too many times in the past.
00:23:46
Speaker
I've like, my eyes are bigger than my stomach.
00:23:48
Speaker
I ordered all this food and you tried to tell me, we should just share something.
00:23:52
Speaker
And I'm like, nah, nah, nah, I'm getting my own.
00:23:55
Speaker
And then it turns out, well, okay, we could probably just split this.
00:24:00
Speaker
Any other thoughts on quick service food or snacks?
00:24:03
Speaker
No, I mean, I would just say lighter is better.
00:24:05
Speaker
You know, bowls, things like that, always good options.
00:24:08
Speaker
And yeah, big, big, well, this is a totally different topic, but a big, huge thing of pizza or, you know, cheesy pasta for me before a race.
00:24:19
Speaker
No, that's not good.
00:24:20
Speaker
Doesn't work for my body type.
00:24:22
Speaker
I've had bad experience doing that.
00:24:24
Speaker
But I know other people love to eat pizza before a race.
00:24:26
Speaker
I just don't know if that's good general advice or if that works just for them.
00:24:30
Speaker
I would say try that at home before you go for a long run.
00:24:34
Speaker
Don't do anything new before a race morning.
00:24:37
Speaker
Disney does not do pizza well in general, although there are good places to get pizza.
00:24:42
Speaker
Like a Disney cruise.
00:24:47
Speaker
They do pizza good there.
00:24:50
Speaker
I thought you were like trying to Jedi mind trick me and you're trying to Jedi mind trick me into taking you on a Disney cruise.
00:24:55
Speaker
You know, anytime that you want to is fine with me.
00:24:58
Speaker
I like the Disney pizza.
00:24:59
Speaker
I was thinking like if you go to like any of the pizza places that you just see like when you're walking through Disney, it's like that puffy, like mostly bread, like nasty pizza.
00:25:10
Speaker
Although you can get really good pizza over in Italy.
00:25:13
Speaker
And some of the resorts have good pizza.
00:25:14
Speaker
But again, not my recommendation.
00:25:18
Speaker
So that's food from Disney, which is expensive food.
Grocery Deliveries to Disney Hotels
00:25:21
Speaker
What we do is we do the quick service and we split.
00:25:24
Speaker
That's how we save money.
00:25:25
Speaker
And honestly, I order kids meals every once in a while.
00:25:28
Speaker
That's a great option.
00:25:29
Speaker
Because it's almost the same portion size.
00:25:30
Speaker
Same portion, yeah.
00:25:34
Speaker
But Erica, if we don't want to spend Disney prices on money, you want to share number eight?
00:25:38
Speaker
Yes, we do a lot of grocery delivery.
00:25:41
Speaker
Um, so Instacart, Kroger, things like that.
00:25:44
Speaker
They can deliver right to, um, the hotel lobby for you.
00:25:48
Speaker
You don't even have to be there to pick it up.
00:25:50
Speaker
Although I usually like to go meet the person.
00:25:53
Speaker
Um, but we will order things like water bottles, um, bananas, bagels, peanut butter, things like that that we'll snack on throughout the week.
00:26:02
Speaker
I get protein bars usually, something like that I have in the room, throw in my backpack.
00:26:06
Speaker
And stuff you could technically, well, not waters, but like you could bring from home.
00:26:10
Speaker
If you have room in your suitcase and all, bring it from home.
00:26:13
Speaker
But if you don't, or you're flying a long distance or you're coming off of another vacation, anything like that.
00:26:17
Speaker
We do the grocery delivery and it works great.
00:26:20
Speaker
You said Instacart.
00:26:21
Speaker
Did you say Kroger too?
00:26:23
Speaker
Um, how do you have a preference on one over the other?
00:26:26
Speaker
Um, we've had some issues within stick art before.
00:26:29
Speaker
And then what I read online is that seems to be kind of like a general theme.
00:26:34
Speaker
So people find that Kroger delivery, they have better luck with that.
00:26:38
Speaker
And we did use that for our last two deliveries and it worked well.
00:26:42
Speaker
There might be other options.
00:26:43
Speaker
I don't know about Amazon or Target or anything.
00:26:46
Speaker
We just haven't done those.
00:26:47
Speaker
But you can have it delivered right to your resort.
00:26:50
Speaker
You said we have waters delivered.
00:26:52
Speaker
And we also, this is my tip, we don't buy water bottles from Disney anymore.
00:26:59
Speaker
They're $3.95, $4.95, something like that.
00:27:02
Speaker
And you drink so much water, or you should on a race weekend, that that gets expensive incredibly fast.
00:27:10
Speaker
So yes, we have water bottles from the store.
00:27:12
Speaker
The other thing we do is that we, you introduced this to me, we basically get the nasty Florida water from the vending machine thing.
00:27:21
Speaker
What do you call that?
00:27:21
Speaker
Where you go up to the thing and it... The drink dispensary?
00:27:24
Speaker
You get the, but it tastes like Florida.
00:27:27
Speaker
And so you get that gross water, but you taught me this.
00:27:31
Speaker
We've got those circle water bottle filter things.
00:27:34
Speaker
So circle is in brand name, not the shape of it.
00:27:37
Speaker
And you put the cartridge in the top that has a flavoring in it.
00:27:40
Speaker
And then you adjust the intensity.
00:27:43
Speaker
You drink that nasty Florida water through the flavor filter and it tastes fine.
00:27:48
Speaker
It tastes like whatever your filter was.
00:27:49
Speaker
So I like like watermelon or strawberry something.
00:27:53
Speaker
Uh, there's like a blue raspberry that I like a lot.
00:27:56
Speaker
I'm sure you could accomplish the same thing with like the flavoring you put in your water.
00:28:00
Speaker
Um, we've found that like when we're in the parks, we just carabiner clip the, um, circle cause it's got a little handle on it.
00:28:06
Speaker
We carabine it to our, you know, whatever backpack or something like that.
00:28:09
Speaker
And then we can always just refill, refill, refill.
00:28:12
Speaker
And the cartridge lasts a long time.
00:28:14
Speaker
Another trick that we learned was staying at a resort that has a water filter.
00:28:20
Speaker
And this is kind of goes back to our moderate thing is that if the resort has a fitness center, they'll have a water, gosh, I don't know what to call it.
00:28:31
Speaker
A filtered water dispenser.
00:28:32
Speaker
Like the station with like the big water bottle on top or whatever.
00:28:36
Speaker
You know what I'm talking about.
00:28:38
Speaker
Maybe no one else knows, but you
00:28:40
Speaker
It's just a filtered water dispenser.
00:28:43
Speaker
So you go and you, like at Caribbean, not Caribbean Beach, Coronado Springs, we go to the fitness center, fill that thing up.
00:28:50
Speaker
Actually, we fill all of them up.
00:28:51
Speaker
We take like six water bottles.
00:28:53
Speaker
There were people that are working out in the fitness center and we come in with our 12 water bottles.
00:28:58
Speaker
Six each, you know, and fill them up.
00:29:01
Speaker
So my understanding is that Coronado is the only moderate that has a fitness center.
00:29:05
Speaker
All the deluxes do as well.
00:29:07
Speaker
If you're staying at any of the values, unfortunately, this tip is not for you.
00:29:12
Speaker
You're going to have to either grocery delivery your water, do the filter, like filter your own way.
00:29:20
Speaker
Or drink the disgusting Florida water.
00:29:23
Speaker
Whatever you do, don't skip the water.
00:29:25
Speaker
You don't want to be dehydrated on a race weekend.
00:29:29
Speaker
And actually, Disney, Run Disney knows that.
00:29:31
Speaker
They actually have runner stations at the hotels.
00:29:34
Speaker
And they usually have bottles of water there that you can grab.
00:29:37
Speaker
So you can go, I think, we've stayed at a lot of different resorts.
00:29:42
Speaker
Caribbean Beach had theirs at the pool.
00:29:46
Speaker
It's just a table.
00:29:47
Speaker
And it says, welcome runners.
00:29:49
Speaker
And you can get your picture by a little art installation, like a frame.
00:29:53
Speaker
You can get your picture and it says Run Disney on it.
00:29:56
Speaker
They have stickers and coloring things for kids.
00:29:58
Speaker
And they have bananas and granola bars and waters.
00:30:01
Speaker
So we usually go and get there.
00:30:02
Speaker
So that Caribbean Beach has theirs at the pool.
00:30:04
Speaker
I think Coronado's was by the pool.
00:30:07
Speaker
French Quarter was in the lobby.
00:30:10
Speaker
Art of Animation had an entire room.
00:30:13
Speaker
They call it the runner's lounge.
00:30:15
Speaker
Pop Century had a room maybe.
00:30:18
Speaker
We did not stay there, but I saw it.
00:30:20
Speaker
I was over at the yacht club or beach club, one of those.
00:30:23
Speaker
I saw there, they had a table in their lobby.
00:30:25
Speaker
So you can get water that way.
00:30:28
Speaker
I think politely though, you go and you grab a water.
00:30:32
Speaker
Not, oh, wow, water and scoop up all of them.
00:30:35
Speaker
That would not be, that would not be a kind thing to do.
00:30:38
Speaker
Erica, we're moving on off of water.
00:30:40
Speaker
Do you want to talk about number 10?
00:30:41
Speaker
This is the, how you can save money by spending a ton of money.
00:30:45
Speaker
Do you want to cover this one?
Benefits of an Annual Pass
00:30:48
Speaker
So one of the ways that we save money is by buying an annual pass.
00:30:54
Speaker
Which is, by the way, if you live out of state, $1,500 per person for the year.
00:31:01
Speaker
So when we say spend money to save money, Erica, I mean, I'm sure you have reasons for this, but just know that we're not saying go buy an annual pass to save money.
00:31:12
Speaker
You're going to end up spending more than you're going to save, but the benefits you have to determine if they're worth it.
00:31:18
Speaker
If you're going to do a bunch of race weekends like we normally do, then it's worth it.
00:31:22
Speaker
You're going to save money on your hotel, on merchandise, on food, and then, of course, you get your park entry.
00:31:29
Speaker
If you're only doing one Run Disney event for the year, this is not the way to go.
00:31:35
Speaker
No, I think I did the math.
00:31:36
Speaker
You got to do, so you take the $1,500 or whatever it is now, you divide it, right, by the park ticket price.
00:31:44
Speaker
And you got to go like nine, 10 times to a park.
00:31:47
Speaker
So if you're going to go nine or 10 times in a year, it doesn't have to be able to run Disney race weekend.
00:31:51
Speaker
If you're going to go on a family vacation in the summer and you know you're going for seven days and you're doing a run Disney race weekend and that's three days, that might be your 10 days worth of park time.
00:32:00
Speaker
Or you're doing every race weekend like us.
00:32:02
Speaker
I mean, I think we, shoot, we did 14 days or something in the parks that year that we did all the races, right?
00:32:10
Speaker
So that made it worth it just for the park entry alone because the tickets to get in the parks are $170 now.
00:32:17
Speaker
So just for park entry made it worth it.
00:32:19
Speaker
What you're talking about that makes it even more worth it is like you could get discount on the hotel.
00:32:25
Speaker
So sometimes it's 20%, 30%, 35% off of the hotel rates.
00:32:30
Speaker
And like we said, their prices are high on race weekend.
00:32:34
Speaker
They know we're coming.
00:32:35
Speaker
Food, you get a discount on most food.
00:32:38
Speaker
Even the run Disney merchandise, I think it's 20% off.
00:32:41
Speaker
So I go buy that sweatshirt, you know, for $120.
00:32:43
Speaker
It saves me 20 bucks or so.
00:32:46
Speaker
So you get parking included with it.
00:32:49
Speaker
I mean, if you want to try and justify the cost of an annual pass, there are ways to justify it.
00:32:54
Speaker
Just know that you have to be a Disney person who's going to enjoy the parks and all that to get your value out of having an annual pass.
00:33:02
Speaker
It's not just worth buying it just because.
00:33:05
Speaker
Just because of the hotel discount.
00:33:07
Speaker
I don't think you're going to save that much, that much money.
00:33:10
Speaker
Any other thoughts on the annual pass?
00:33:13
Speaker
So the, one of the things that's nice about the past is that when we go for race weekends, we do go into the parks, but we go for a short period of time.
00:33:21
Speaker
We will go ride a ride or two and then grab some dinner and then leave.
00:33:26
Speaker
Um, and so there's not that pressure that you feel if you bought a park ticket for race weekend, you know, you're either exhausted after the race or you're trying to save your energy before the race, but you're like, well, we just paid all this money to go into the parks.
00:33:38
Speaker
We got to go, we got to stay for eight hours, you know, whatever.
00:33:42
Speaker
It takes that pressure off if you have the pass.
00:33:45
Speaker
If you spend $170 per person and you're trying to maximize that because that's a lot of money.
00:33:53
Speaker
But you also know you need to go to bed.
00:33:56
Speaker
You don't want to have tired feet or achy legs when you're trying to run a half marathon.
00:34:01
Speaker
And maybe this is a product of you and I've been to Disney enough times that we can just go in, ride pirates, watch the fireworks and leave.
00:34:08
Speaker
You know, maybe that's a product of just having been a bunch of times.
00:34:11
Speaker
But the annual pass gives you that freedom.
00:34:13
Speaker
To say, you know what?
00:34:14
Speaker
I didn't get the full value out of today, but I got to do what I wanted to do.
00:34:19
Speaker
And then I can leave.
00:34:20
Speaker
I don't have to stay.
00:34:24
Speaker
Moving on to tip number 11 is don't, this is mostly for people who are new and just don't know how the system works yet.
Transportation to Race Events
00:34:31
Speaker
The transportation.
00:34:32
Speaker
Don't Uber around, like to the expo especially.
00:34:36
Speaker
I see a lot of people doing that, like lots of Ubers to the expo.
00:34:39
Speaker
There's a bus for that.
00:34:41
Speaker
run disney provides the bus it's included it's free you don't have to tip the driver yep you can get any of the hotels can get to all the race stuff yeah and you don't have to uber to the race you don't have to uber back any of that so don't think that so like the disney buses don't go to the race stuff i think that's where people get confused the disney bus you would normally take to the park does not service the race but there's a whole separate bus system that
00:35:06
Speaker
And all you got to do is look for the Run Disney sign at your bus stop.
00:35:09
Speaker
Every bus stop has a Run Disney sign.
00:35:11
Speaker
And a lot of them have a person.
00:35:13
Speaker
And they're wearing an orange vest and they have a clipboard.
00:35:16
Speaker
And you just walk up and you say, hi, I'm trying to get to the race expo or I'm trying to get to wherever.
00:35:21
Speaker
Usually they'll look at you, look at your shoes and be like, you're running.
00:35:24
Speaker
Are you trying to get to the expo?
00:35:26
Speaker
They immediately say, expo folks, head this way.
00:35:32
Speaker
Tip number 12 is...
00:35:34
Speaker
This might be controversial.
00:35:36
Speaker
Avoid Disney Springs.
00:35:39
Speaker
That's the end of that point.
00:35:42
Speaker
I don't like Disney Springs personally.
00:35:44
Speaker
It's crowded and I get a headache every time we go.
00:35:48
Speaker
Yes, but that's off topic.
00:35:50
Speaker
I say, even though that's true for me too.
00:35:52
Speaker
I say avoid Disney Springs because I always end up spending money at Disney Springs that I didn't intend to or want to or am happy about.
00:36:00
Speaker
Well, and they'll get you because they'll be like, run Disney people, get a discount at like Lululemon or whatever this weekend.
00:36:07
Speaker
And you're like, oh, awesome discount.
00:36:08
Speaker
And then you end up spending all this money that you weren't planning on spending.
00:36:11
Speaker
And it's like 10%.
00:36:12
Speaker
So like you're basically, you know, saving the tax and a little sum.
00:36:16
Speaker
So I just avoid Disney Springs.
00:36:19
Speaker
One, to save my legs and whatever, because it's a lot of walking and it's frustrating.
00:36:23
Speaker
It's a frustrating place.
00:36:24
Speaker
And we just need to do a whole episode on why Disney Springs is the worst.
00:36:30
Speaker
Maybe not a whole episode.
00:36:30
Speaker
No, I don't think so.
00:36:31
Speaker
We don't prefer it.
00:36:34
Speaker
But I say avoid it for my money.
00:36:36
Speaker
Like sometimes I'll go just to get Gideon's cookies.
00:36:40
Speaker
But I'll still end up in the Ron John surf shop or something or I'll see something.
00:36:43
Speaker
I'm like, I'm now I'm just now I'm being tempted.
00:36:46
Speaker
To spend money when I really didn't even want to come here.
00:36:48
Speaker
All I wanted was the cookie.
00:36:50
Speaker
By the way, total side tangent.
00:36:53
Speaker
If you like the Gideon's cookies.
00:36:55
Speaker
and you want a cookie, gourmet cookie, but you don't want to wait an hour and a half in that line, go over to the cookie bar at Summer House on the Lake.
00:37:03
Speaker
The cookies are totally different, so they're not the same kind of cookie, but those cookies are delicious.
00:37:09
Speaker
Walk right up, tell them what you want, walk right up.
00:37:12
Speaker
But if you really want to save money, don't go to Disney Springs.
00:37:16
Speaker
Tip number 13, Erica, you want to cover
Essential Race Gear Preparation
00:37:18
Speaker
Bring what you need for the race.
00:37:21
Speaker
Do not try to buy the necessities at the expo.
00:37:24
Speaker
If you forget something cool, you can run over and grab it.
00:37:27
Speaker
But for the most part, try to figure out, I will go into this probably in another episode, but I plan even down to like the amount of nutrition that I take per race so that I know that I have everything that I need.
00:37:39
Speaker
I've made the mistake of forgetting something from home.
00:37:43
Speaker
And it wasn't like purposeful mistake or whatever, but I accidentally forgot something.
00:37:46
Speaker
I had to go to the race expo, which took up time and energy.
00:37:49
Speaker
And then, you know, buying fuel.
00:37:51
Speaker
And it's, I don't know that it's marked up, but I definitely not like saving money.
00:37:56
Speaker
It's not Amazon prices.
00:37:58
Speaker
I think that's my point.
00:37:59
Speaker
It's probably retail pricing, you know, whatever, but it's not, you're not getting like bulk pricing or anything like that.
00:38:04
Speaker
So I bought in fuel before.
00:38:06
Speaker
I didn't have a hat one year and I, it was rain in the forecast and I knew I needed a hat, not because I wanted that hat, but I needed a hat because of the weather.
00:38:18
Speaker
And now I just know to pack a hat.
00:38:20
Speaker
And we're actually going to do a whole episode on what to pack.
00:38:22
Speaker
So that's coming up too.
00:38:23
Speaker
Um, but just try not like use the expo vendors, my opinion as a, Oh my gosh, I totally didn't pack my socks.
00:38:34
Speaker
I need socks and you do need them.
00:38:38
Speaker
You got, you know, you don't really have a whole lot of choice, right?
00:38:41
Speaker
Uh, unless you can get off property and go to a store or whatever, but, um, don't count on it.
00:38:45
Speaker
I think that's my, my point is you can spend a lot of money there.
00:38:49
Speaker
We are getting through our list.
00:38:51
Speaker
Number 14 is if you don't want to spend money, stay out of the parks.
00:38:55
Speaker
That's not just your park ticket.
00:38:57
Speaker
The parks are designed.
00:38:59
Speaker
They're wonderful.
00:39:01
Speaker
One of my favorite places to be.
00:39:03
Speaker
And I have conditioned to myself that
00:39:05
Speaker
as a super mature adult to walk past all the things, all the stores and the food and all that, and just go for the experience of the park.
00:39:14
Speaker
But that's a hard thing to do.
00:39:16
Speaker
Especially if you have kids in tow or anything like that.
00:39:19
Speaker
And so they're, they're trying and they're trying to make money.
00:39:22
Speaker
And they've got a million awesome outfits and awesome things that you could buy.
00:39:26
Speaker
If you don't even want to be tempted, stay out of the park.
00:39:29
Speaker
And my suggestion there is if you're going to stay at the park, enjoy your resort.
00:39:32
Speaker
We've done this where we go to the pool.
00:39:35
Speaker
We just walk a resort.
00:39:37
Speaker
We'll go visit other resorts.
00:39:39
Speaker
They do s'mores and a bonfire.
00:39:42
Speaker
You know, like there's ways to enjoy your resort.
00:39:45
Speaker
I also have just sat in the room and turned on Mickey Mouse cartoons and just enjoyed it.
00:39:55
Speaker
You love your Mickey cartoons.
00:39:58
Speaker
And so I say, you know what?
00:40:00
Speaker
Just because you're at Disney does not mean you have to go into the park.
00:40:04
Speaker
I think there's a pressure or a FOMO that you need to.
00:40:08
Speaker
But if you're cool with hanging around your resort, just do that.
00:40:11
Speaker
We like to ride the Skyliner.
00:40:15
Speaker
It's like a free ride.
00:40:16
Speaker
You can rest your legs and see Disney without paying for it.
00:40:23
Speaker
This is a good point.
00:40:24
Speaker
You can entertain yourself.
00:40:26
Speaker
all around Disney property without going into the parks and save yourself some money.
00:40:30
Speaker
We've gone and we've done the Skyliner where we just did the entire thing.
00:40:33
Speaker
We've gone and done the monorail loop.
00:40:35
Speaker
We've gone and ridden the boats.
00:40:37
Speaker
And these are all like rides, you know, like things you could do.
00:40:39
Speaker
If you've got your kids with you, it'll entertain them.
00:40:42
Speaker
We have gone from our resort to another resort, eaten a quick service meal.
00:40:47
Speaker
Yeah, that's what I was just going to say.
00:40:50
Speaker
There's good restaurants in a lot of the hotels that you don't know about.
00:40:53
Speaker
Okay, real fast, rough topic.
00:40:55
Speaker
Favorites, like if you were to say, hey, go grab a bite to eat.
00:40:58
Speaker
Yeah, that sandwich with the- Pesto?
00:41:02
Speaker
Yeah, oh, yeah, it's like- Are we thinking about the same place?
00:41:05
Speaker
It's the one that like is French- Riviera.
00:41:09
Speaker
Yeah, I thought I had like a pesto on it.
00:41:12
Speaker
Well, no, it's something like that.
00:41:13
Speaker
But that's delicious.
00:41:15
Speaker
It's like a ciabatta bread.
00:41:18
Speaker
Yeah, it's at the bottom of the Riviera.
00:41:20
Speaker
Any other quick suggestions?
00:41:21
Speaker
If you were going to go grab a fast bite to eat, quick service style?
00:41:25
Speaker
Well, our favorite is Three Bridges.
00:41:28
Speaker
That is not a quick service, but yes.
00:41:31
Speaker
It's a sit down, but we love it.
00:41:32
Speaker
But we don't order the meals.
00:41:35
Speaker
We order a bunch of appetizers.
00:41:36
Speaker
We split the appetizers.
00:41:37
Speaker
Three Bridges at Coronado Springs.
00:41:39
Speaker
It's out in the middle of a lake.
00:41:40
Speaker
It's wonderful vibes.
00:41:42
Speaker
We would just get- Corn.
00:41:43
Speaker
What's the corn thing?
00:41:44
Speaker
Yeah, the corn, street corn something.
00:41:48
Speaker
We eat it with chips.
00:41:50
Speaker
And maybe some- And the queso.
00:41:54
Speaker
I like to go to Captain Hook's over at the Polynesian.
00:41:57
Speaker
I don't know if you like Captain Hook's as much as I do.
00:41:59
Speaker
The pulled pork nachos.
00:42:01
Speaker
Yeah, those were good.
00:42:02
Speaker
What was interesting about that is I love the pulled pork and whatever.
00:42:05
Speaker
And like, I tried just not to eat so many chips, you know, but those, that was super good.
00:42:10
Speaker
Oh, French Quarter.
00:42:12
Speaker
Has a chicken sandwich.
00:42:15
Speaker
We're doing a whole episode on food.
00:42:16
Speaker
Let me just stop with this.
00:42:19
Speaker
You don't have to go to the parks to eat, to play, to explore.
00:42:22
Speaker
You can, you can do that at your resort.
00:42:24
Speaker
Last tip, and this tip I'm going to suggest, and I personally don't do it.
00:42:30
Speaker
So I cannot say this is how we do it.
00:42:34
Speaker
I'm just going to say it is a tip.
00:42:36
Speaker
And that is to stay off Disney property at your hotel.
00:42:39
Speaker
Stay at the Hilton Garden Inn, stay at the Embassy Suites, whatever.
00:42:44
Speaker
Most likely guaranteed the rate is going to be cheaper than staying on property.
00:42:48
Speaker
This is a totally different thing.
00:42:51
Speaker
I believe that what you're paying for when you stay on Disney property is the convenience and the magic.
00:42:57
Speaker
Is that worth it to you?
00:42:58
Speaker
You know, to be able to just walk out your room, get on a bus, get on the Skyliner, get on a boat and go over to wherever you're trying to get to.
00:43:04
Speaker
To me, it's worth the money, right?
00:43:08
Speaker
I do not like the headache of trying to get on and off property, pay for parking, take a shuttle from the hotel and to the this and to that.
00:43:16
Speaker
I also don't like the being removed from the Disney magic.
00:43:19
Speaker
However, I understand you're paying for it.
00:43:22
Speaker
Disney knows that.
00:43:23
Speaker
But if you need to save some money for whatever reason, or you want to save some money, or you don't even like Disney, you're just trying to do this run.
00:43:30
Speaker
And you don't want anything to do with the magic of Disney.
00:43:33
Speaker
Stay off property.
00:43:35
Speaker
I can't even think, if you're really just doing it because you're trying to knock off, you know, this bucket list item, or you're doing it with a friend and your friend talked you into it, you know, then yeah, stay off property.
00:43:45
Speaker
Any other thoughts, Erica?
00:43:47
Speaker
We've just covered 15 items.
00:43:48
Speaker
Any other thoughts on how to save money at a run Disney race weekend?
00:43:52
Speaker
I don't think I can say anything else without like encroaching into another episode.
00:43:58
Speaker
I have a surprise question for you.
00:44:00
Speaker
Okay, what's that?
00:44:01
Speaker
How do you save money on your things you wear at a race weekend?
00:44:05
Speaker
So I'm thinking like...
00:44:08
Speaker
outfits, because you usually find our matching themed outfits and things like those can be expensive.
00:44:13
Speaker
It's not at a race weekend, but like those can get expensive.
00:44:17
Speaker
Do you have any tips or suggestions on saving money there without going too deep?
00:44:21
Speaker
Or is that a whole nother topic?
00:44:22
Speaker
That's like a whole nother topic.
00:44:24
Speaker
That's a whole like podcast episode.
00:44:26
Speaker
So when we do that episode, can I just interview you?
00:44:30
Speaker
I will have lots to say.
00:44:31
Speaker
Because I actually don't do that part of the process.
00:44:33
Speaker
No, it's too much.
00:44:37
Speaker
That's 15 ways that we try to save money at a run Disney race weekend.
00:44:41
Speaker
Erica, let's talk news and run Disney news and personal training and things like that.
00:44:47
Speaker
News is that run Disney released the 12 Ks of Christmas.
00:44:51
Speaker
Have you seen the artwork?
00:44:56
Speaker
I'm not a Muppets fan.
00:44:58
Speaker
And it's all Muppets themed.
00:45:00
Speaker
So I have zero interest.
00:45:03
Speaker
We've never done the Christmas, 12 Ks of Christmas, which by the way is a virtual event.
00:45:08
Speaker
It's all Muppets themed this year.
00:45:09
Speaker
You don't like the Muppets.
00:45:11
Speaker
I love the Muppets.
00:45:13
Speaker
I don't think I knew this about you.
00:45:14
Speaker
Oh, I love the Muppets.
00:45:16
Speaker
How do I not know this?
00:45:17
Speaker
The kids and I quote the Muppets all the time.
00:45:21
Speaker
You just don't like the Muppets.
00:45:23
Speaker
So you don't get the quotes.
00:45:24
Speaker
Give me an example.
00:45:26
Speaker
Am I wearing a sign that says, bother me?
00:45:30
Speaker
That's from the Muppets.
00:45:31
Speaker
I knew that's from the Muppets.
00:45:32
Speaker
I feel like you guys don't quote that very much.
00:45:36
Speaker
I like the Muppets.
00:45:39
Speaker
I'm just going to say it.
00:45:40
Speaker
I hate the artwork for this 12Ks of Christmas.
00:45:45
Speaker
It looks awful, in my opinion.
00:45:48
Speaker
I love the Muppets, but the artwork is very flat, black outline.
00:45:54
Speaker
I mean, I literally just saw Muppets and kept scrolling.
00:45:56
Speaker
That's how much you didn't care?
00:45:59
Speaker
I'm sorry if you love the Muppets.
00:46:01
Speaker
I do love the Muppets and I'm offended, but I don't like the artwork.
00:46:04
Speaker
So you don't want to sign up for it?
00:46:07
Speaker
I don't want to sign up for it because the artwork is not great.
00:46:11
Speaker
But it's also a very expensive virtual race.
00:46:14
Speaker
I don't know if you've noticed this.
00:46:19
Speaker
Or $276, something like that.
00:46:21
Speaker
I didn't know it was that much.
00:46:22
Speaker
You get like a beanie and maybe a coffee mug.
00:46:27
Speaker
with it if it's worth it to to you the listener our friends you should do it you should do it because if it's important to you then just knock yourself out yeah just because we're not we're not digging the vibes um other news i think uh halloween came out there are course maps and stuff we are not doing the halloween race no and so that doesn't apply to us directly but i did notice that the course is very different for the half marathon coming up at the september halloween race that sounds so weird
00:46:57
Speaker
September Halloween race.
00:46:58
Speaker
Remember like how we did a long loop around Anaheim?
00:47:01
Speaker
Did you know that you don't even get to Anaheim until mile six now?
00:47:06
Speaker
So they've heard the feedback.
00:47:08
Speaker
Do you think that they're going to continue with that for half marathon?
00:47:13
Speaker
So we are doing the January half marathon race.
00:47:15
Speaker
I think last year it was the same course for their Halloween race and the January race at Disneyland.
00:47:22
Speaker
Just like in, you know how when we did Walt Disney World marathon weekend, a month later it was the same course for princess half marathon weekend.
00:47:30
Speaker
I think they certify the course and it stays the same.
00:47:35
Speaker
I actually like the course.
00:47:37
Speaker
It's still some Anaheim in there, you know, but it seems less like
00:47:41
Speaker
way out there and way back.
00:47:43
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:47:44
Speaker
Well, that's good.
00:47:45
Speaker
Hopefully it stays the same.
00:47:46
Speaker
That's Run Disney News.
00:47:48
Speaker
Any training updates for you?
00:47:49
Speaker
I have a training update.
00:47:51
Speaker
But I'm happy to listen first if you want to go first.
00:47:53
Speaker
So I was in Phoenix.
00:47:57
Speaker
And it was 100 and I think it topped out at 114 or 116 degrees in Phoenix.
00:48:00
Speaker
We're from Atlanta, which means if it's hot,
00:48:06
Speaker
If we travel to another city and it's hot, you know it's hot because we're already hot.
00:48:11
Speaker
And so I got to Phoenix.
00:48:12
Speaker
I walked outside and I just couldn't even.
00:48:15
Speaker
Like, I felt my skin sizzle, you know?
00:48:20
Speaker
And there was nobody outside.
00:48:22
Speaker
I was talking to people who were from Phoenix and they're like, oh, it's hot.
00:48:25
Speaker
And so I did not get to run outside at all.
00:48:27
Speaker
I ran on the treadmill twice.
00:48:31
Speaker
I ran the dreadmill twice, which I dreaded.
00:48:34
Speaker
Um, but I didn't, was it just because of work schedule and travel schedule?
00:48:37
Speaker
I wasn't able to get any more runs in like that right now, Erica, I am right now four days out from a run.
00:48:43
Speaker
I think this is the longest I've ever not, not been on the road.
00:48:47
Speaker
I came home late last night.
00:48:48
Speaker
Thanks for picking me up at the airport, by the way.
00:48:50
Speaker
I had to work all day today and we're recording this podcast.
00:48:56
Speaker
four days of no running, I'm feeling super antsy about getting out on the run.
00:49:01
Speaker
I was just going to say, Clay's going to be knocking on our door.
00:49:04
Speaker
I emailed Clay, my run coach and said, Hey, just a heads up.
00:49:07
Speaker
My work schedule has been all jacked up.
00:49:10
Speaker
I'm, you know, I'm off.
00:49:12
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:49:13
Speaker
Like I'm way off what I'm supposed to be doing.
00:49:14
Speaker
So I don't know how he's going to get me back on track, but I need to get back on track.
00:49:18
Speaker
So that's, that's the only update for me is travel really does mess with, with it.
00:49:22
Speaker
And then jet lag messes with you and stuff like that.
00:49:25
Speaker
But what I know is that I'm conditioned and all that.
00:49:27
Speaker
I just need to not let that beat me down.
00:49:30
Speaker
I just need to get back out and get back out on the road.
00:49:33
Speaker
Any training update?
00:49:34
Speaker
You don't have to have one, but any training update?
00:49:36
Speaker
Yeah, I did seven miles on Saturday.
00:49:38
Speaker
And one of the things that we have talked about briefly, which we'll talk about more moving forward, is just how nutrition and hydration or lack thereof definitely will play a part in your run.
00:49:50
Speaker
And so when I went for my seven miles on Saturday, the night before I had taken the kids to the movie theater, and I didn't eat a bunch, but I ate some popcorn.
00:49:58
Speaker
I didn't drink my normal amount of water on Friday.
00:50:00
Speaker
And so I definitely was feeling that on Saturday, just kind of meh.
00:50:05
Speaker
So I got the miles done, but I didn't love it like I normally do.
00:50:08
Speaker
You just, you felt the weight of the food.
00:50:10
Speaker
Is that what I'm understanding for you?
00:50:12
Speaker
I just like my stomach sort of hurt and I just felt heavy.
00:50:16
Speaker
Any tips or suggestions for our friends down there?
00:50:19
Speaker
Don't eat popcorn.
00:50:20
Speaker
Is that the suggestion?
00:50:22
Speaker
Maybe don't eat movie theater popcorn like six hours before you're going to go for your long run.
00:50:28
Speaker
Just keep your food and your water in mind before you go for your long run.
00:50:34
Speaker
It's actually amazing we can run it all when you really think about how many things you've got to line up.
00:50:38
Speaker
Food, sleep, hydration, energy level.
00:50:42
Speaker
I mean, it can still get done, but you're going to pay for it.
00:50:46
Speaker
Keeping all your workout clothes clean.
00:50:48
Speaker
I feel like we do more laundry for workout clothes than anything else.
00:50:52
Speaker
That's how you know we've had a life change.
00:50:54
Speaker
90% of our laundry is running clothes.
00:50:57
Speaker
It's like, we don't like to dry it in the dryer.
00:50:59
Speaker
So like it's all hanging up.
00:51:05
Speaker
So thanks for sharing your training update.
00:51:07
Speaker
Um, I think that's it for this episode.
00:51:09
Speaker
Thanks for doing it again.
00:51:10
Speaker
Cause you've already recorded it.
00:51:12
Speaker
We did a third, three fourths of the way.
00:51:14
Speaker
We were like to point number 12 or something.
00:51:19
Speaker
But we said it a lot more concise the second time around.
00:51:22
Speaker
Thank you all for listening to this episode.
00:51:25
Speaker
If you wouldn't mind, leave us a review.
00:51:27
Speaker
Share this with a friend if you've got friends that are interested in Disney, run Disney, running, any of the things.
00:51:34
Speaker
Share it with a friend.
00:51:34
Speaker
We'd love that for their benefit, not for ours.
00:51:37
Speaker
Next week, we're going to talk about staying on Disney property.
00:51:40
Speaker
These are going to be all the things.
00:51:41
Speaker
So we've kind of touched little places we like to eat or little things we like to do.
00:51:44
Speaker
But we're going to talk about when we arrive and
00:51:47
Speaker
our favorite hotel, our least favorite that we've stayed at.
00:51:50
Speaker
We're going to talk about all the things, pros, cons.
00:51:52
Speaker
That is all next week.
00:51:54
Speaker
Erica, I love it when you give us something inspiring to live with.
00:51:57
Speaker
Do you have anything inspiring that you can leave us with so we don't just leave on a, well, that was it.
00:52:02
Speaker
You got anything inspiring for us?
00:52:04
Speaker
Don't dream of winning.
00:52:08
Speaker
Own that training.
00:52:09
Speaker
I think another way to say that is like, it takes action.
00:52:12
Speaker
You got to put the work in.
00:52:13
Speaker
You can't just think your way to the finish line.
00:52:15
Speaker
You got to, you got to do it.
00:52:17
Speaker
But having a positive mindset is good too.
00:52:20
Speaker
