We’re keeping it real and practical this week on One More Run, the Podcast. Training isn't always the most exciting thing in the world and sometimes it doesn't go exactly as planned, so if you find yourself in a slump... if you find yourself there, you’re not alone. We're sharing the little things that help us get through some of those long, boring and repetitive training runs: - Our favorite podcasts - Some of our topic music tracks that work for us - Running together This episode is a reminder that showing up doesn’t have to look perfect—just keep moving forward.

Introduction and Podcast Theme

00:00:00
Speaker
Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast.
00:00:01
Speaker
If it sounds like we are not in the studio, it sounds like we're outside, it's because Erica and I are outside.
00:00:06
Speaker
We are.
00:00:07
Speaker
We are in Seattle, Washington this week.
00:00:09
Speaker
We're about to go on a long run and this is perfect, Erica, because... We are talking today about how to stay motivated while you're out on a long run.
00:00:16
Speaker
This one's going to be a good one.
00:00:17
Speaker
Can you tell I'm ready to run?

Marathon Training Plan Overview

00:00:27
Speaker
We're a few episodes in, Erica, and I think there's something that, my bad, I just kind of like didn't, I don't think, clarified or cleared up kind of in the beginning.
00:00:37
Speaker
And maybe it didn't need clearing up, but I probably should have explained something or we should have explained something a little more in depth, which is our training...
00:00:45
Speaker
what our training looks like from here to marathon weekend.
00:00:48
Speaker
We're counting down all these episodes.
00:00:49
Speaker
We're counting down to marathon weekend in January.
00:00:52
Speaker
And so that's over 20 weeks, but we didn't really describe like what each one of those weeks looks like.
00:00:57
Speaker
And we don't have to dive into like, well, on week 12, we're doing this.
00:01:00
Speaker
Right.
00:01:00
Speaker
Like, but just kind of a sampling.
00:01:02
Speaker
Yeah.
00:01:02
Speaker
So people understand like what we're doing within a week.
00:01:05
Speaker
So we're running during a week.
00:01:07
Speaker
We are walking during a week.
00:01:08
Speaker
We are strength training during a week.
00:01:11
Speaker
Like,
00:01:12
Speaker
Each week is pretty similar.
00:01:15
Speaker
The mileage might vary.
00:01:16
Speaker
Would you mind giving an overview on each week and then we can talk about what the 20 plus

Weekly Training Routines

00:01:21
Speaker
weeks look like?
00:01:21
Speaker
Yes.
00:01:22
Speaker
So typically you're going to run three days a week.
00:01:25
Speaker
If you fall away, if you fall away,
00:01:28
Speaker
I'm not sure what you're trying to say there.
00:01:30
Speaker
If you follow the Galloway method.
00:01:31
Speaker
The Jeff Galloway run, walk, run, play.
00:01:33
Speaker
If you follow the Galloway method, you're going to run 30 minutes on Tuesday and Thursday.
00:01:38
Speaker
And then Saturday or Sunday, your choice really, is going to be your long run day.
00:01:43
Speaker
You're going to alternate back and forth between a shorter distance, like two and a half miles.
00:01:47
Speaker
The next weekend, you're going to run five.
00:01:48
Speaker
The next weekend, you're going to run three and like that.
00:01:51
Speaker
Um, one of those days definitely needs to be a rest day.
00:01:54
Speaker
So either like some slow walking or yoga, something like that.
00:01:59
Speaker
Um, and then probably two, uh, two other days, I would say two or three other days, you're going to do some sort of cross training, um, legs, arms, mostly legs.
00:02:09
Speaker
So cross training being not running.
00:02:11
Speaker
Correct.
00:02:12
Speaker
Yeah.
00:02:12
Speaker
Like in the gym, strength, body weight slash like weight, weight.
00:02:19
Speaker
Yeah.
00:02:19
Speaker
Yeah.
00:02:20
Speaker
So can you give me the, for you?
00:02:23
Speaker
Yes.
00:02:23
Speaker
And everybody can change.
00:02:24
Speaker
Like if you can't work out on, or you can't run on Tuesday, do it on Monday.
00:02:27
Speaker
Like you can change it.
00:02:29
Speaker
If you run 45 minutes instead of 30, that's not that big a deal.
00:02:32
Speaker
But can you give me your week?
00:02:34
Speaker
Just Monday, I do this.
00:02:35
Speaker
Tuesday, I do this.
00:02:35
Speaker
Wednesday, I do this.
00:02:36
Speaker
Like, can you generally?
00:02:37
Speaker
Yeah.
00:02:38
Speaker
Yeah.
00:02:38
Speaker
So Monday is, well, I can tell you this week because I just wrote it on my calendar.
00:02:42
Speaker
Let's do it.
00:02:42
Speaker
Okay.
00:02:43
Speaker
So Monday, I'm going to be doing some strength training.
00:02:46
Speaker
I'm going to be doing some leg work and some core work.
00:02:48
Speaker
Okay.
00:02:49
Speaker
30 minutes or so.
00:02:50
Speaker
It's a little bit longer than that, but yeah, less than an hour.
00:02:53
Speaker
Tuesday, I'm gonna run 30 minutes.
00:02:55
Speaker
Wednesday, I'm gonna do some more strength training.
00:02:57
Speaker
So again, it's gonna be leg work, but also going to have some, I can't think of the word that I wanna use.
00:03:08
Speaker
Core work, upper body?
00:03:09
Speaker
No, no, no, no, it's like- Mobility, stability, balance.
00:03:14
Speaker
No, no, I feel like I need to pull out my phone.
00:03:16
Speaker
We're totally keeping this in the podcast.
00:03:18
Speaker
No, we are not.
00:03:19
Speaker
Please stand by technical difficulties.
00:03:21
Speaker
That is correct.
00:03:22
Speaker
Yes.
00:03:23
Speaker
Oh, conditioning is a great word.
00:03:25
Speaker
There you go.
00:03:26
Speaker
So some conditioning rounds.
00:03:30
Speaker
Thursday, I'm going to do another 30 minute run.
00:03:32
Speaker
Okay.
00:03:32
Speaker
Friday, I probably have some more strength training.
00:03:35
Speaker
So leg and arm for sure.
00:03:37
Speaker
Okay.
00:03:38
Speaker
No rest day.
00:03:39
Speaker
You were going five days straight.
00:03:40
Speaker
Sunday is going to be my rest day.
00:03:41
Speaker
Sunday is your rest day.
00:03:42
Speaker
Sunday is my rest day typically.
00:03:44
Speaker
Saturday is going to be my longer run.
00:03:45
Speaker
This Saturday, I'm doing five and a half miles.
00:03:48
Speaker
And then Sunday is my rest day.
00:03:50
Speaker
Perfect.
00:03:50
Speaker
So you only have one rest day.
00:03:51
Speaker
That is correct.
00:03:52
Speaker
Interesting.
00:03:53
Speaker
Yeah.
00:03:54
Speaker
It obviously is going to vary person to person.
00:03:56
Speaker
Right.
00:03:56
Speaker
If you've got a running coach, which I have one, and you've got a strength and kind of conditioning person, you know, if you've got someone guiding you through that, it might change because they were going to know what you need.
00:04:09
Speaker
versus like this generic plan on the internet.
00:04:13
Speaker
But we always start with the Jeff Galloway plan and kind of talk with our coaches and stuff about what needs to be included or not, or can we vary something or
00:04:24
Speaker
I'm traveling this week.
00:04:25
Speaker
It's going to be very hard for me to get all my runs in this week because I'm traveling.
00:04:28
Speaker
Right.
00:04:29
Speaker
Right.
00:04:29
Speaker
And I'm sure people have stuff like that.
00:04:31
Speaker
Okay.
00:04:31
Speaker
So then looking at like the whole thing.
00:04:34
Speaker
So let's say half marathon training is 19 weeks.
00:04:36
Speaker
We're doing a marathon training right now.
00:04:37
Speaker
So it's got extra weeks.
00:04:39
Speaker
But in those 19 weeks, you're going to go Tuesday, Thursday.
00:04:43
Speaker
You know, they always kind of look the same.
00:04:45
Speaker
I call them maintenance runs.
00:04:47
Speaker
Right.
00:04:47
Speaker
I don't know if that's what they're actually called.
00:04:48
Speaker
That's what I call

Motivational Media for Runs

00:04:49
Speaker
them.
00:04:49
Speaker
They, you know, some of them are speed work.
00:04:51
Speaker
Okay.
00:04:52
Speaker
But with the mileage changes on the weekends, so your Saturdays or your Sundays, we start off at like two miles and then three and then back to two to kind of take it easy and then four and then back to three and then five and three and six and three and seven and three and a half and eight and three.
00:05:12
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:05:13
Speaker
And it slowly progresses until you get to like December right around Christmas.
00:05:19
Speaker
And it's like on marathon training, it's like,
00:05:22
Speaker
24 miles, you know, but you've worked up to it.
00:05:24
Speaker
Right.
00:05:25
Speaker
You have.
00:05:25
Speaker
Yeah.
00:05:26
Speaker
And so anyway, I don't know if that's helpful.
00:05:29
Speaker
If it is great, if it's not, then hopefully we didn't lose you on the podcast.
00:05:33
Speaker
And you've, I just thought that'd be helpful.
00:05:35
Speaker
And in all of that, it can get monotonous and boring.
00:05:38
Speaker
And especially when you're at home and you're doing it by yourself.
00:05:41
Speaker
And it's hot.
00:05:42
Speaker
And it's hot.
00:05:43
Speaker
Or I'm traveling, so it's going to be hard for me to do it on the road.
00:05:46
Speaker
But I'm also traveling, which means it's going to be hard for you at home because you've got kids to take care of.
00:05:51
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:05:52
Speaker
Like everyone has life.
00:05:52
Speaker
Right.
00:05:53
Speaker
And so we thought we'd just share some of the things that keep us motivated, but also what keeps us distracted.
00:06:00
Speaker
Right.
00:06:00
Speaker
Because not everything we do or listen to, you know, in our headphones or whatever, is motivating.
00:06:05
Speaker
Sometimes it's just distracting.
00:06:06
Speaker
Right.
00:06:07
Speaker
You know, or entertaining.
00:06:08
Speaker
So anyway, I thought we just, there is no what or how or,
00:06:12
Speaker
or good and bad to the today's list.
00:06:15
Speaker
Today's list is just kind of suggestions, I guess.
00:06:18
Speaker
So I thought we'd start with what we listened to.
00:06:21
Speaker
I've got my list on the notes.
00:06:23
Speaker
I always seem to put mine first, maybe because alphabetical order or I think I'm more important, but that's not true.
00:06:29
Speaker
And so I have my first list on here first.
00:06:33
Speaker
Do you mind if I share mine?
00:06:34
Speaker
Of course, go ahead.
00:06:35
Speaker
Okay.
00:06:35
Speaker
So I'm going to talk podcasts.
00:06:38
Speaker
Yes.
00:06:38
Speaker
We're on a podcast right now.
00:06:40
Speaker
Right.
00:06:40
Speaker
And so I listen to a lot of podcasts, though.
00:06:42
Speaker
I've listed five here.
00:06:44
Speaker
And I'm going to...
00:06:46
Speaker
This is not like the in order, please don't get your feelings hurt, you know, whatever.
00:06:52
Speaker
One is not better than the other.
00:06:53
Speaker
These are like my five that I absolutely go to on a run.
00:06:57
Speaker
Yeah.
00:06:58
Speaker
And then others as well.
00:07:00
Speaker
So like when I've heard the most current episode on these five, then I go to the, I start going down the list to other stuff.
00:07:07
Speaker
And these are all Disney ones.
00:07:09
Speaker
Yeah.
00:07:10
Speaker
There are three things I love.
00:07:11
Speaker
I love run Disney.
00:07:13
Speaker
I love Disney Cruise Line.
00:07:14
Speaker
And I love Disney World.
00:07:16
Speaker
So these three, five podcasts cover those three things.
00:07:20
Speaker
The Rise and Run podcast is a absolute must, in my opinion, for anyone doing Run Disney.
00:07:27
Speaker
They have built an incredibly cool, inclusive, huge community of runners of all types.
00:07:34
Speaker
And they have guests on.
00:07:37
Speaker
They do race reports with people.
00:07:39
Speaker
If you run a race at home or whatever, you go on their Facebook page and you send a picture and say how the race went and they read it on air every time.
00:07:47
Speaker
They don't miss one.
00:07:48
Speaker
And they have amazing guests.
00:07:51
Speaker
I mean, I would say it's more or less podcast and more of like a community of run Disney runners.
00:07:56
Speaker
And we see them at the race.
00:07:59
Speaker
I don't know them personally, you know, but we see them and they're clearly here for the community element of it.
00:08:05
Speaker
So I love Rise and Run.
00:08:06
Speaker
Do you listen to Rise and Run?
00:08:07
Speaker
I do.
00:08:07
Speaker
I listen to only two and Rise and Run is one of them.
00:08:10
Speaker
Okay, perfect.
00:08:11
Speaker
Three, two, one, go.
00:08:12
Speaker
The podcast is another one I listened to.
00:08:15
Speaker
It is the race announcers.
00:08:18
Speaker
If you've never done a run Disney race, Carissa Galloway and John Pelkey are two of the announcers, the main ones they've been doing at the longest and they're on the main stage.
00:08:27
Speaker
Anyway, they started the podcast and the name comes from when they start every wave and they yell, you know, go, they count it down.
00:08:35
Speaker
Right.
00:08:35
Speaker
And they yell three, two, one, go.
00:08:38
Speaker
And anyway, that's the name of their podcast.
00:08:41
Speaker
And it's good.
00:08:42
Speaker
They do more than just run Disney.
00:08:44
Speaker
So heads up, if you care to listen to people who've run, you know, like serious athletes who've run Boston and all that, because Carissa, she's an announcer for all these other things too, right?
00:08:53
Speaker
So it does go beyond run Disney, but I listened to it for the run Disney, if I'm just being honest about that.
00:08:58
Speaker
Okay.
00:08:59
Speaker
So that's my run Disney podcasts.
00:09:00
Speaker
Okay.
00:09:01
Speaker
The DCL Duo is my cruise line go-to.
00:09:04
Speaker
That's my other podcast.
00:09:06
Speaker
Okay.
00:09:06
Speaker
So you listen to the duo as well.
00:09:08
Speaker
Brian and Sam, I feel like they, from a cruise line standpoint, they've done it all.
00:09:13
Speaker
They provide very helpful information and it's entertaining.
00:09:16
Speaker
Right.
00:09:17
Speaker
And so if I just want to listen to something about cruise line and just dream of being on one of the ships, I put in their podcast and just listen to
00:09:26
Speaker
What I do like theirs is they're like an hour or so, which gets me through one of my significant runs.
00:09:33
Speaker
And I don't even have to change podcasts.
00:09:36
Speaker
They had us on their podcast.
00:09:37
Speaker
Yes, that was fun.
00:09:38
Speaker
Hello, everyone.
00:09:40
Speaker
And welcome back to another live bonus episode of the DCL Duo podcast.
00:09:45
Speaker
I'm joined by the lovely Erica and AJ.
00:09:49
Speaker
So nice to see you guys.
00:09:50
Speaker
And welcome to the show, you two.
00:09:53
Speaker
This is the best day of my life because I finally got on the show.
00:09:56
Speaker
Oh my God.
00:09:56
Speaker
And I got to be honest, that was the best.
00:09:59
Speaker
Rope Drop on Deck is my other cruise line one.
00:10:05
Speaker
And I don't know them personally, but they're just funny.
00:10:09
Speaker
Like I love their banter and all that stuff.
00:10:11
Speaker
And so that's a good one for...
00:10:14
Speaker
Less on tips and whatever and more on like opinions.
00:10:16
Speaker
They share their opinions about things on the cruise line.
00:10:19
Speaker
And I enjoy that one.
00:10:20
Speaker
And then my, this one, I'm giving a disclaimer.
00:10:23
Speaker
These guys on this last one, they use some language.
00:10:27
Speaker
It's fun, but you might not want to listen with your kids in the car.
00:10:29
Speaker
Yes.
00:10:30
Speaker
So for your amusement is the name of it.
00:10:33
Speaker
FYA.
00:10:34
Speaker
And what they do is they, I can't think of their catchphrase, but they're out to like exhaustively rate all theme park rides or something like that.
00:10:44
Speaker
So they'll choose a ride, anything, Pirates of the Caribbean or whatever.
00:10:48
Speaker
And they'll put it through this rubric test of theirs.
00:10:52
Speaker
And they're silly guys.
00:10:53
Speaker
And they just put it through this silly test of, you know, is it, you know...
00:10:58
Speaker
Is it re-ridable?
00:10:59
Speaker
Do you walk off the ride feeling energized?
00:11:01
Speaker
They have this whole rubric and they put every ride through that.
00:11:05
Speaker
Anyway, I'm sitting there yelling at them from a distance, you know what I mean?
00:11:10
Speaker
And also agreeing with them at the same time.
00:11:12
Speaker
Anyway, those are my five.
00:11:13
Speaker
That was a long description.
00:11:14
Speaker
But if you're looking for a Disney-related podcast, those are my five.
00:11:17
Speaker
All right.
00:11:18
Speaker
That was mine.
00:11:18
Speaker
So I took a long time on that.
00:11:20
Speaker
Erica, what do you listen to while you're on a run?
00:11:23
Speaker
I, by the way, I'm coming to music next.
00:11:25
Speaker
I don't know what your list looks like, but I, that was my podcast.
00:11:28
Speaker
My music is next, but I want to give you a chance to share some stuff.
00:11:31
Speaker
Yes.
00:11:32
Speaker
Okay.
00:11:32
Speaker
So I typically, I'm going to say like 90% of the time listen to music.
00:11:37
Speaker
Okay.
00:11:39
Speaker
I listened to a wide assortment of music.
00:11:41
Speaker
Okay.
00:11:42
Speaker
There's some pop, there's some rap, there's some.
00:11:45
Speaker
Some rap, huh?
00:11:46
Speaker
Yeah.
00:11:48
Speaker
Is it, is it the motivating, like, is it the right tempo?
00:11:51
Speaker
Is that what it is?
00:11:52
Speaker
Yeah.
00:11:52
Speaker
Yeah.
00:11:52
Speaker
Most of it is tempo related for me.
00:11:54
Speaker
Um, I, I've tried to put in songs that I love, like from the seventies, but like, they're just not fast enough, you know, or they're not the right tempo.
00:12:02
Speaker
So typically I try to find things that are like in my, my tempo range.
00:12:06
Speaker
Yeah.
00:12:06
Speaker
Any examples that you'd be willing to share or are they too embarrassing?
00:12:09
Speaker
They're not so embarrassing.
00:12:12
Speaker
So I love to start with Never Get Used to This by Forrest Frank.
00:12:16
Speaker
That's just like a fun one.
00:12:17
Speaker
I don't even know that song.
00:12:18
Speaker
Is it because I'm, am I too old to know this song?
00:12:21
Speaker
No.
00:12:21
Speaker
No, no.
00:12:21
Speaker
You could know this song.
00:12:22
Speaker
Okay, okay.
00:12:24
Speaker
I love What a Man Gotta Do by Jonas Brothers.
00:12:28
Speaker
I do know that one.
00:12:29
Speaker
It's very like fun and poppy.
00:12:30
Speaker
I don't know.
00:12:31
Speaker
When I'm tired, I listen to Eminem, Lose Yourself, for sure.
00:12:35
Speaker
That gets me up a hill.
00:12:37
Speaker
Like the eight mile truck?
00:12:38
Speaker
Yeah, totally.
00:12:40
Speaker
Mom's spaghetti?
00:12:41
Speaker
Like that one?
00:12:42
Speaker
Yeah, for sure.
00:12:43
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:12:43
Speaker
Okay.
00:12:44
Speaker
A lot of Meghan Trainor, a lot of Kelly Clarkson.
00:12:47
Speaker
It's just like the right beats per minute for the pace that I want to go at.
00:12:52
Speaker
I see.
00:12:53
Speaker
I also love to listen to audio books.
00:12:57
Speaker
I love to read, but I don't really have time to do that anymore.
00:12:59
Speaker
So I like to listen to audio books, but it's got to be like really riveting to keep me fully engaged. 100%.
00:13:06
Speaker
And then I do like to listen to a couple of podcasts.
00:13:08
Speaker
So for sure, my go-to is DCL Duo.
00:13:12
Speaker
I love 321 Go.
00:13:14
Speaker
Yeah, just all the ones that you listed.
00:13:16
Speaker
I feel like I listen to those whenever we're in the car together.
00:13:19
Speaker
But yeah, I like to listen to those when I run as well.
00:13:21
Speaker
But for the most part, it's music.
00:13:24
Speaker
Yeah.
00:13:24
Speaker
When I have to do a long run and I've been instructed to keep it at an easy pace, if I put on the music that I'm about to explain, then I overdo it.
00:13:33
Speaker
Right.
00:13:33
Speaker
Right.
00:13:33
Speaker
I can't control myself.
00:13:36
Speaker
Yes.
00:13:36
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:13:37
Speaker
I don't even have Eminem on my list because I would probably like pull my hoodie over my head, you know, and get in the zone.
00:13:44
Speaker
Right.
00:13:45
Speaker
Okay.
00:13:46
Speaker
Anything else you want to share about what you listen to?
00:13:47
Speaker
I've got a list of just kind of what's funny about my list.
00:13:50
Speaker
Do you have anything else to share?
00:13:51
Speaker
No, not really.
00:13:52
Speaker
I'm going to say this.
00:13:54
Speaker
I have built a playlist on my phone for race day called AJ's Perfect Race Day Playlist.
00:14:03
Speaker
I have a couple of those, yes.
00:14:05
Speaker
And I have curated this list over time.
00:14:09
Speaker
And it has a lot of my music that I need.
00:14:13
Speaker
But it actually has a very specific beginning.
00:14:17
Speaker
Yes, I know.
00:14:19
Speaker
So this is the dorkiest thing of all time, but it actually works for me.
00:14:23
Speaker
This does not apply to races that I'm doing with you because this is my motivation, my push up to my pace.
00:14:32
Speaker
Right.
00:14:33
Speaker
Right.
00:14:33
Speaker
So here's my ritual.
00:14:34
Speaker
Okay.
00:14:35
Speaker
Are you ready?
00:14:35
Speaker
Yes.
00:14:36
Speaker
You kind of know it.
00:14:37
Speaker
I do.
00:14:37
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:37
Speaker
So in the chorale, when they do the national anthem and that's done, that means they've been cleared to go.
00:14:44
Speaker
Right.
00:14:45
Speaker
That's like the official sign that we're going.
00:14:47
Speaker
Right.
00:14:48
Speaker
I already have my earbuds in.
00:14:49
Speaker
I pull my phone out.
00:14:50
Speaker
I hit start on the playlist.
00:14:52
Speaker
And the first track for those five minutes until I go out of my chorale.
00:14:57
Speaker
Yes.
00:14:57
Speaker
Corral A is the Soarin' Over California theme song.
00:15:02
Speaker
how that motivates you.
00:15:04
Speaker
Oh, it does.
00:15:05
Speaker
It says like, let's do this, you know, whatever, but it's so Disney.
00:15:10
Speaker
Yeah.
00:15:11
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:15:11
Speaker
And like, if you know Disney stuff, like if you know Soren, like when you can just picture, you can smell the oranges, you know, you can picture the aircraft carrier and the horses.
00:15:22
Speaker
And I'm just so motivated by this thing, but it's also not like
00:15:26
Speaker
pumping me up like eight mile wood right it's kind of it's my prep song yeah does that make sense like yeah i'm not moving yet yeah now this is where it gets intense okay and this is so very specific there's a track on the han zimmer live album from the movie inception okay
00:15:46
Speaker
And I think it's pronounced Mombasa.
00:15:49
Speaker
Okay.
00:15:50
Speaker
And this is the most dry.
00:15:51
Speaker
And I know I can't share it on this video or whatever.
00:15:53
Speaker
Like I can't, I don't even know how to describe it.
00:15:55
Speaker
It is like the eight mile thing, but instrumental.
00:15:57
Speaker
Right.
00:15:58
Speaker
I'm talking about, if I put it on, on a run at home, I am out there running unintentionally.
00:16:04
Speaker
Like a six minute pace.
00:16:06
Speaker
Kind of.
00:16:06
Speaker
Yeah.
00:16:07
Speaker
It gets me flying out of the gate.
00:16:09
Speaker
I am so pumped up.
00:16:11
Speaker
So go look up that track.
00:16:12
Speaker
And add it to your playlist.
00:16:14
Speaker
And if you don't like it, that's okay.
00:16:16
Speaker
I mean, you got to understand it's cinematic.
00:16:18
Speaker
It's not.
00:16:19
Speaker
It's not.
00:16:19
Speaker
Now, here's the deal.
00:16:22
Speaker
I just looked at your number three.
00:16:23
Speaker
This actually happens.
00:16:24
Speaker
I'm out the gate.
00:16:26
Speaker
Uh-huh.
00:16:27
Speaker
Flying out the gate.
00:16:28
Speaker
Okay.
00:16:30
Speaker
Leave everyone in the dust.
00:16:31
Speaker
Uh-huh.
00:16:31
Speaker
This is legit on my playlist.
00:16:33
Speaker
Yeah.
00:16:33
Speaker
Okay.
00:16:33
Speaker
Okay.
00:16:35
Speaker
Nothing can stop us now from Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway.
00:16:39
Speaker
Oh, my word.
00:16:41
Speaker
It's on my playlist.
00:16:43
Speaker
And it's very specific.
00:16:44
Speaker
How does that motivate you?
00:16:46
Speaker
It doesn't.
00:16:47
Speaker
It slows me back down.
00:16:49
Speaker
I see.
00:16:50
Speaker
And sets me in the Disney run mode.
00:16:52
Speaker
Right, right, right.
00:16:53
Speaker
Because I get a little intense.
00:16:55
Speaker
And I know that about myself.
00:16:56
Speaker
And I also have a tendency to go out too fast.
00:16:59
Speaker
Right, right, right.
00:16:59
Speaker
So I need to go.
00:17:01
Speaker
Right.
00:17:02
Speaker
I need to get out of there and I need to clear and make space.
00:17:06
Speaker
But the Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Real, that's good lyrics.
00:17:09
Speaker
Nothing can stop me, right?
00:17:10
Speaker
Nothing can stop us now.
00:17:12
Speaker
But it puts me right back and reminds me.
00:17:15
Speaker
And it's only a minute long.
00:17:16
Speaker
It's only 60 seconds because it's just a ride and whatever.
00:17:19
Speaker
It literally reminds me where I am.
00:17:23
Speaker
Oh my gosh.
00:17:24
Speaker
And then I hit repeat or not repeat, um, shuffle on my rap music.
00:17:31
Speaker
And I have a whole bunch of rap music.
00:17:33
Speaker
Now here's, um, no matter what your belief system is or whatever.
00:17:36
Speaker
Oh yeah.
00:17:36
Speaker
These are good.
00:17:37
Speaker
These are on my list as well.
00:17:38
Speaker
Yeah.
00:17:39
Speaker
So no matter what your belief system is, here's my, this is my thing.
00:17:44
Speaker
I had a bunch of rap music on my playlist, but I didn't like the lyrics.
00:17:50
Speaker
Correct.
00:17:51
Speaker
Yeah.
00:17:52
Speaker
For me personally, no judgment.
00:17:54
Speaker
Okay.
00:17:55
Speaker
But I didn't need, when I'm trying to be motivated and trying to run and trying to be kind to other runners on the course, I'm trying to do my personal best, all that, whatever.
00:18:05
Speaker
I don't need to hear about
00:18:06
Speaker
drugs and violence and shooting people.
00:18:08
Speaker
I don't need it.
00:18:10
Speaker
I don't need it at that time.
00:18:11
Speaker
Right.
00:18:11
Speaker
You know?
00:18:12
Speaker
So I found a bunch of Christian faith-based rap.
00:18:15
Speaker
Right.
00:18:15
Speaker
I should have probably specified that other than the Eminem, that is what I'm talking about is I listen to Christian rap music.
00:18:21
Speaker
Yeah.
00:18:22
Speaker
Okay.
00:18:22
Speaker
So like, but these are all very motivating songs.
00:18:25
Speaker
Like one of them is called, you can't stop me.
00:18:28
Speaker
And that's literally the chorus.
00:18:29
Speaker
You can't stop me.
00:18:30
Speaker
And I'm like, but, but there's nothing about like
00:18:33
Speaker
guns or gangs or anything.
00:18:34
Speaker
Does that make sense?
00:18:35
Speaker
Yes.
00:18:36
Speaker
Uh, and there's one called coming in hot.
00:18:38
Speaker
Yes.
00:18:38
Speaker
I love that one.
00:18:39
Speaker
Cause I, I mean, when I, when I need it, I'm coming in hot.
00:18:43
Speaker
Right.
00:18:43
Speaker
And, uh, I've got a new one called victory lap.
00:18:46
Speaker
I love that one.
00:18:47
Speaker
Anyway, maybe we'll put together an Instagram post with like our top 10.
00:18:51
Speaker
Sounds good.
00:18:52
Speaker
Nerdy Christian rap songs that motivate us on a run.
00:18:55
Speaker
Yeah.
00:18:56
Speaker
Yeah.
00:18:56
Speaker
Something like that.
00:18:57
Speaker
Okay, anything else on what you listen to?
00:18:59
Speaker
Because it's motivating for sure.
00:19:02
Speaker
Right?
00:19:02
Speaker
I mean, sometimes you need it.

Running Together: Motivation and Strategy

00:19:04
Speaker
I will say Taylor and I, our middle child, we ran the 10K at Princess together this last winter.
00:19:10
Speaker
And we got to the end and she was done and she didn't want to do it anymore.
00:19:14
Speaker
I mean, she wanted to do it, but she just physically exhausted.
00:19:16
Speaker
And I gave her one of my earbuds and I put it on and I put it in coming in hot.
00:19:21
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:19:21
Speaker
And it was in the last mile.
00:19:23
Speaker
And I watched it.
00:19:24
Speaker
I saw her.
00:19:25
Speaker
Music makes a big difference.
00:19:26
Speaker
She was moving.
00:19:26
Speaker
Okay.
00:19:27
Speaker
All right.
00:19:28
Speaker
Done with the music stuff.
00:19:29
Speaker
You want to talk about running together?
00:19:31
Speaker
Sure.
00:19:31
Speaker
Because that's motivating.
00:19:32
Speaker
Yeah.
00:19:33
Speaker
We don't do it a lot.
00:19:34
Speaker
No.
00:19:34
Speaker
We definitely do it on race days.
00:19:37
Speaker
We do it on the 10K.
00:19:38
Speaker
I think we've run every single 10K together.
00:19:40
Speaker
Yeah.
00:19:40
Speaker
We've done a few halves together.
00:19:42
Speaker
We've done all of our marathons together.
00:19:45
Speaker
And so why is that motivating for you?
00:19:47
Speaker
is i mean i know it can be intense and and whatever but is it how is that motivating for you to run with with somebody well for me specifically when i'm exhausted and i want to take a walk break you're like we can go longer come on let's go i don't really love it in the moment but um you shot me some daggers that is correct yes
00:20:07
Speaker
But no, I love it.
00:20:09
Speaker
I think like, especially on the marathon, I mean, that at 26 miles, that's a long way to go.
00:20:15
Speaker
I honestly don't know.
00:20:17
Speaker
I mean, I could do it by myself.
00:20:19
Speaker
There would be a lot more walking involved, but like the pace that I want to go, I have to do it with you.
00:20:25
Speaker
Like we've got to do it together and it's fun to do it together because then it's like something that we accomplished together.
00:20:30
Speaker
Yeah, so you get to that two-hour mark of like a half marathon.
00:20:34
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:34
Speaker
And you've kind of, you know, you don't mind doing it by yourself.
00:20:37
Speaker
Right.
00:20:37
Speaker
If you're running it by yourself.
00:20:38
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:39
Speaker
And you can tolerate it and all that stuff.
00:20:41
Speaker
But when you start pushing four hours.
00:20:43
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:43
Speaker
Four and a half, then you're, you know what I mean?
00:20:45
Speaker
Like all of a sudden, it's a lonely experience.
00:20:48
Speaker
Like mile 19 to 22 is like terrible.
00:20:52
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:52
Speaker
And you need a buddy.
00:20:53
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:54
Speaker
And you don't know this, but like you pick me up when we do those marathons because there are times when I'm like,
00:21:01
Speaker
why are we even doing this?
00:21:03
Speaker
And you, you bring me along in those moments because for some reason you're not tired at those times when I am.
00:21:09
Speaker
Yeah.
00:21:10
Speaker
But then when you're tired, I'm like, Hey, look at Hill.
00:21:13
Speaker
Yay.
00:21:13
Speaker
We get to run a hill.
00:21:14
Speaker
And you're like, I'm going to kill you.
00:21:15
Speaker
Because you're a three on the Enneagram.
00:21:17
Speaker
I am an achiever.
00:21:19
Speaker
That's right.
00:21:20
Speaker
I got it.
00:21:21
Speaker
So while we talk about, like, obviously we run together a lot.
00:21:23
Speaker
And also one of the things we also do, if you have a spouse or a partner, you know, friend, sibling, whatever at home, that's not a runner, we walk together a lot.
00:21:34
Speaker
Yeah.
00:21:34
Speaker
And that, I call that time on your feet.
00:21:36
Speaker
And that's super important.
00:21:38
Speaker
I mean, evening, sometimes in the morning, take the dog, like don't discount that that's actually helpful for your training.
00:21:47
Speaker
Right.
00:21:47
Speaker
Yep.
00:21:48
Speaker
Uh, it doesn't replace a run fully, you know, but, uh, especially if you just couldn't get a run in, then, then a walk is better than nothing.
00:21:56
Speaker
Um, but we do, we do our run and a walk generally.
00:21:59
Speaker
And we usually do those walks together.
00:22:01
Speaker
Yeah, totally.
00:22:02
Speaker
Um, I've started running with a, and this is new for me, a running group, a friend invited me cause he's like, Oh wow, you run a lot.
00:22:09
Speaker
Uh, you want to come join us for a running group.
00:22:11
Speaker
And you know, that awkward thing where you show up to a new group that you're not part of yet and you have to like,
00:22:17
Speaker
you know, be the awkward, you know, like, Hey, everybody, you overdo it.
00:22:20
Speaker
Right.
00:22:20
Speaker
You're like, Hey everybody, I made you, you know, and you're trying to land there like chill out there, pal.
00:22:25
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:22:26
Speaker
Um, and, or you do the opposite, right?
00:22:28
Speaker
You're like the quiet one in the corner.
00:22:30
Speaker
That's me.
00:22:31
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:31
Speaker
So, um, anyway, I've joined these, uh, this group, they all live near us and they go out every Saturday or Sunday and they go do eight, nine, 10 miles, something like that.
00:22:41
Speaker
And, um,
00:22:42
Speaker
interestingly, because I don't know them really well yet, I've been kind of talking to them.
00:22:46
Speaker
Anyway, I get to the end of eight miles and like, I'm like, oh, the run is already over.
00:22:50
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:50
Speaker
Um, and they don't, they don't run really, really hard so you can talk and whatever.
00:22:57
Speaker
I think that's a matter of perspective.
00:22:58
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:59
Speaker
They told me what the pace was when they asked me, you know, invited me to the group.
00:23:03
Speaker
I would not be talking at that pace.
00:23:05
Speaker
It's fine.
00:23:05
Speaker
Let's not talk pace.
00:23:07
Speaker
So anyway, if you have an opportunity to run in a running group, it's awkward in the beginning.
00:23:12
Speaker
And if it's a good running group,
00:23:15
Speaker
like this one, there are really fast runners.
00:23:18
Speaker
There's medium runners and there's some slower runners that they might run three or four miles and then they slowly fall off and whatever.
00:23:24
Speaker
And there's no judgment.
00:23:26
Speaker
Right.
00:23:26
Speaker
And I think that's the biggest thing why people don't want to do a running group or whatever is you just don't want the judgment or the, you know, you feel like you can't keep up or whatever.
00:23:34
Speaker
It's a good, if it's a good group, then I, then I would say do it.
00:23:38
Speaker
They have this thing, they call it a flash to back, I think is what they call it.
00:23:42
Speaker
Something like that.
00:23:43
Speaker
And it's literally the people in the front,
00:23:46
Speaker
go to the back and the people in the back are now in the front and it keeps the pace varying or whatever and yeah and everybody together so anyway that's just it's a motivator yeah if you're looking if you're a social person do that for sure yeah
00:24:02
Speaker
Um, Erica, you want to talk about local races?
00:24:04
Speaker
We've kind of built these sometimes into our training in terms of like, um, having something to look forward to along those 19 or 26 or however many weeks we have to marathon or half marathon, whatever it is, we find races at the appropriate distance at the appropriate time.
00:24:21
Speaker
You want to just talk about that experience?
00:24:22
Speaker
Yeah.
00:24:23
Speaker
And why that works for us or has worked for us.
00:24:25
Speaker
Yeah, sure.
00:24:26
Speaker
So in the beginning, we did the nights of lights or whatever, where you like basically run through the Christmas light display.
00:24:33
Speaker
Most people are like on a little tram, but there's a group of people that run through it.
00:24:37
Speaker
Yeah.
00:24:38
Speaker
And that was super exciting for us when we first started.
00:24:40
Speaker
We were like, we did a 5K.
00:24:42
Speaker
Is it a 5K?
00:24:43
Speaker
I think that one's a 10k.
00:24:44
Speaker
Is it a 10?
00:24:45
Speaker
Which is why we might have been so impressed with ourselves.
00:24:47
Speaker
I don't know.
00:24:47
Speaker
We were so excited.
00:24:49
Speaker
It was our first 10k.
00:24:50
Speaker
Yeah.
00:24:51
Speaker
But we had built up to that time.
00:24:53
Speaker
We'd never run that distance before, which is six miles.
00:24:56
Speaker
Yeah.
00:24:56
Speaker
We'd never run that distance.
00:24:57
Speaker
So our first time to run 6.2 miles was in an official race.
00:25:01
Speaker
And it made that achievement feel bigger.
00:25:04
Speaker
Yeah.
00:25:05
Speaker
Right.
00:25:05
Speaker
Yeah.
00:25:05
Speaker
So you get to run with other runners.
00:25:07
Speaker
Yep.
00:25:08
Speaker
There's a little bit of the hype of a race weekend, which is, you know, can get you motivated.
00:25:11
Speaker
I have a medal from that race.
00:25:12
Speaker
Yeah.
00:25:13
Speaker
Yeah, totally.
00:25:14
Speaker
And then as you get closer to marathon weekend or whatever, whatever the weekend is, the longer distances, you know, when you're, you look at your calendar and you're like, okay, this weekend I'm running 19 miles.
00:25:24
Speaker
Like where do I even go to run 19 miles in our town?
00:25:28
Speaker
I mean, there's lots of options, but if you can find a local race to sort of build that training in too, then it makes it go by quicker.
00:25:35
Speaker
I think I did a half marathon one time where it was a 19 or something mile day.
00:25:41
Speaker
And the half marathon was only 13 miles, obviously.
00:25:44
Speaker
And I think I either drove to the race, ran the race and kept running.
00:25:50
Speaker
You did.
00:25:50
Speaker
You like grabbed your medal and kept running.
00:25:52
Speaker
That's right.
00:25:53
Speaker
Yeah, yeah.
00:25:53
Speaker
I think I thought about running to the race and then running it, but I thought...
00:25:57
Speaker
Normally run there, wait in the corral, and that's not going to work.
00:25:59
Speaker
No, that wouldn't be good.
00:26:00
Speaker
By the way, we say corral a lot.
00:26:02
Speaker
A corral is where you basically, they hold you and you wait for the race to start.
00:26:08
Speaker
If the race is big enough, there'll be multiple corral, considered like a pin or a...
00:26:14
Speaker
holding area or whatever.
00:26:15
Speaker
And you'll get assigned at large races to a corral based off your time or based off of whatever their criteria is.
00:26:22
Speaker
So we say corral a lot.
00:26:23
Speaker
That's all it is.
00:26:24
Speaker
A, B, C, D, E, you're going to get assigned one based off of whatever their criteria is.
00:26:30
Speaker
So I didn't want to wait in the corral having just run a few, you know, whatever miles.
00:26:34
Speaker
You don't want to stop.
00:26:35
Speaker
Yeah.
00:26:35
Speaker
So yeah, that's right.
00:26:36
Speaker
You're right.
00:26:37
Speaker
I did the half marathon or is it 15K, something like that.
00:26:40
Speaker
Yes.
00:26:41
Speaker
Literally came through the finish chute.
00:26:43
Speaker
grabbed my medal and kept running shoved it in my backpack and kept going.
00:26:48
Speaker
Yeah.
00:26:48
Speaker
Yeah.
00:26:49
Speaker
Yeah.
00:26:49
Speaker
But I mean, it made that day a lot easier.
00:26:51
Speaker
Oh yeah.
00:26:52
Speaker
Totally.
00:26:52
Speaker
Cause you know, I got a medal for it.
00:26:54
Speaker
I think I did grab a banana too when I came through.
00:26:56
Speaker
So yeah, find a race to make the, the 19 weeks of training or whatever.
00:27:01
Speaker
Not quite so long.
00:27:03
Speaker
Totally.
00:27:03
Speaker
Um, I didn't, you know, try and time it.
00:27:06
Speaker
Anything else on running a race in your training program?
00:27:09
Speaker
I would also say in that, like, don't go run a race full out.
00:27:13
Speaker
No.
00:27:13
Speaker
Like use the race as an opportunity to practice, be around other people or just get a medal.
00:27:19
Speaker
Don't use it as like a, now I need to get a personal record during my training.
00:27:24
Speaker
That's not what I'm saying.
00:27:25
Speaker
Yeah.
00:27:25
Speaker
Okay.
00:27:26
Speaker
Anything else on that?
00:27:27
Speaker
No, I don't think so.
00:27:28
Speaker
Tracking your progress is another great way to stay motivated.
00:27:31
Speaker
What do you do to stay, you know, to kind of track things?
00:27:33
Speaker
Yeah.
00:27:34
Speaker
So I typically, before we start training for a race weekend, I will make like a giant poster board or something of the sort.
00:27:43
Speaker
Um, and I will put on there all of our runs.
00:27:45
Speaker
Um, now I'll put all of my strength training and then each day I'll just check it off.
00:27:49
Speaker
And then I'd like to write my like average mile pace so I can see sort of
00:27:55
Speaker
Is it like a calendar grid kind of vibe?
00:27:57
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:27:58
Speaker
And so you put your results from that run or whatever on there?

Tracking Progress and Community Support

00:28:01
Speaker
Yes, what I'm supposed to do and then what my average mile pace was.
00:28:04
Speaker
So that you can look at it and see progress.
00:28:07
Speaker
Correct, yes.
00:28:08
Speaker
I also use an app called Train Heroic, which is something that I do with my physical therapist.
00:28:13
Speaker
And so on that app, he tells me what I'm supposed to do that day, what exercises.
00:28:19
Speaker
I can log all of my weights for strength training.
00:28:21
Speaker
Okay.
00:28:22
Speaker
And then I log everything, like my heart rate, the temperature outside, especially in the summer, because that will make a big difference in your overall time.
00:28:30
Speaker
Yeah.
00:28:31
Speaker
So you can look at it and say, man, I was slow.
00:28:34
Speaker
Oh, look, it was 96% humidity and 110 degrees.
00:28:37
Speaker
So then you're not beating yourself up.
00:28:39
Speaker
You know there was a factor.
00:28:40
Speaker
Yes, yes.
00:28:42
Speaker
How much time I spent in each heart rate zone, because that's a new thing for me.
00:28:46
Speaker
So it's a great place for me to keep track of everything that I can go back and look and see.
00:28:51
Speaker
Awesome.
00:28:51
Speaker
Yeah.
00:28:52
Speaker
I do like your big poster board you got going on.
00:28:54
Speaker
Yes.
00:28:55
Speaker
It's pretty good.
00:28:56
Speaker
I kind of just, you know, I wear my Garmin and my Garmin has a great app.
00:29:02
Speaker
I like it where it saves all the data.
00:29:04
Speaker
Right.
00:29:04
Speaker
But I can go back and see all those.
00:29:06
Speaker
It's not like a great big spreadsheet like you've got going on on the wall.
00:29:09
Speaker
But I can go back and look.
00:29:10
Speaker
And what I've done is I've gone back to compare Disney races, interestingly, to like compare the courses because it tracks my course.
00:29:17
Speaker
So I can go and see that, hey, the princess course or the half marathon course at half marathon weekend is easier on my body than the wine and dine one because I see that my heart rate zones, wherever there's more hills.
00:29:29
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:29:30
Speaker
Like I can see.
00:29:31
Speaker
So I don't, I'm not a data nerd in general, but I actually like.
00:29:34
Speaker
Yeah.
00:29:35
Speaker
I do that.
00:29:35
Speaker
And I kind of like you're talking about, I look at my heart rate.
00:29:38
Speaker
I look at the weather.
00:29:39
Speaker
I look at all these things to kind of just see like, what is it that's working and not working in my training?
00:29:45
Speaker
And then anytime I get faster, like just knowing that there's data to back it up and it's not me thinking I'm going faster or thinking I'm going slower because sometimes you just feel like you're not moving at all.
00:29:58
Speaker
It turns out the reason you feel like that is because it's easier to
00:30:02
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:30:03
Speaker
And now you're like, you know, you're flying.
00:30:05
Speaker
You just don't know it.
00:30:06
Speaker
Right.
00:30:06
Speaker
So I like to use that.
00:30:08
Speaker
Strava is another one that a lot of runners use.
00:30:11
Speaker
It's got a little bit of an intimidating factor.
00:30:13
Speaker
Let me be honest.
00:30:14
Speaker
Cause you can give like, they call them kudos to other runners.
00:30:16
Speaker
Right.
00:30:17
Speaker
And then you see people posting on there like serious things.
00:30:20
Speaker
you know serious whatever so you get a little bit of that like oh do i um what's the word i'm thinking of imposter syndrome right i feel like with strava um but my running coach he likes to see all my stuff on strava yes and so i'm like oh shoot okay but it is i mean it's a cool app like i remember that once we went on a run together and you're like i'm not gonna log that i need to leave this right now before clay sees it
00:30:42
Speaker
because I was so much slower than you normally go.
00:30:45
Speaker
Oh, I went at your pace and didn't want him to know?
00:30:47
Speaker
Yes, yes.
00:30:47
Speaker
That's pretty funny.
00:30:49
Speaker
Yeah, I did not know about the train heroic one that you use.
00:30:53
Speaker
Yeah, it's basically like personal training slash physical therapy.
00:30:57
Speaker
Let's wrap this up.
00:30:57
Speaker
this episode up, Erica.
00:30:59
Speaker
Last thing I think, well, there's two more things, but last thing I use is, I actually kind of, not consistently enough, I wish I did, is a journal.
00:31:07
Speaker
Races, I always do.
00:31:09
Speaker
I write down, this is how the race went.
00:31:11
Speaker
This is the parts I like.
00:31:12
Speaker
This is the part I don't like.
00:31:13
Speaker
I just do it on my phone, right?
00:31:15
Speaker
And I just write in a note and this is how it went.
00:31:18
Speaker
I really wish I was more consistent with on a, on my normal runs.
00:31:23
Speaker
This is how I'm feeling.
00:31:24
Speaker
This is what I wish I could do better.
00:31:26
Speaker
This is where I fell apart, things like that.
00:31:29
Speaker
But I do like that.
00:31:30
Speaker
I have some background data on, on a lot of my runs, uh,
00:31:35
Speaker
Because again, I can go back and look and be like the progress, like you don't sometimes realize the progress.
00:31:40
Speaker
Right, right.
00:31:41
Speaker
Until you go back and you read it and you're like so excited to reach a certain milestone.
00:31:46
Speaker
Like you mentioned the 10K we ran.
00:31:48
Speaker
Yeah.
00:31:48
Speaker
That was a huge deal to us.
00:31:49
Speaker
Do you remember?
00:31:50
Speaker
Because it was such a big deal to us.
00:31:52
Speaker
We went and carb load, like celebrated at a Mexican restaurant.
00:31:56
Speaker
I remember.
00:31:57
Speaker
And ate everything in sight.
00:31:59
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:00
Speaker
Because it was our first long race.
00:32:02
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:03
Speaker
And I'm not discounting it.
00:32:04
Speaker
But at the time we'd never run that.
00:32:07
Speaker
So we burned at that time, like 700 calories.
00:32:09
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:10
Speaker
And we thought we can go eat anything we want.
00:32:13
Speaker
So we went and ate 2000 calories of Mexican.
00:32:16
Speaker
Right.
00:32:17
Speaker
You could do that after a marathon.
00:32:19
Speaker
But I love that we have that.
00:32:20
Speaker
Right.
00:32:21
Speaker
Like kind of in our memory bank and stored.
00:32:24
Speaker
Totally.
00:32:25
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:32:25
Speaker
It was such a big deal to us that we went out and celebrated.
00:32:28
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:28
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:29
Speaker
And I think that's worth remembering.
00:32:31
Speaker
It's worth documenting.
00:32:32
Speaker
Do you journal in any way or is it your board?
00:32:34
Speaker
Like, how do you?
00:32:35
Speaker
Yeah, I would say that it's probably my whiteboard or my, you know, yeah, my board or my app.
00:32:41
Speaker
Another thing I like to keep track of in there is like my run, walk, run combinations.
00:32:46
Speaker
So I was saying on a previous podcast that like I kind of mess around with like how long do I run versus how long, you know, how many walk breaks am I taking?
00:32:53
Speaker
Today's run, I ran like 10 minutes without ever taking a 30 second walk break.
00:32:58
Speaker
I just like to play around with it.
00:32:59
Speaker
And so I like to have that logged as well.
00:33:01
Speaker
I see.
00:33:01
Speaker
Because sometimes when you're having a bad day and you're like, oh, I had to take so many walk breaks.
00:33:06
Speaker
Like, and you're just convinced in your mind that your time is going to be total trash, but then it's really not.
00:33:10
Speaker
So I like to keep track of that as well.
00:33:12
Speaker
I don't like it, but I also do like, like with my Garmin or whatever, having those really bad runs in there because it reminds me that not every run is a great run.
00:33:22
Speaker
Absolutely not.
00:33:23
Speaker
And it's actually not really supposed to be.
00:33:25
Speaker
Right.
00:33:25
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:33:26
Speaker
Like you have to work through some stuff.
00:33:28
Speaker
You have to struggle.
00:33:29
Speaker
You have to grow.
00:33:30
Speaker
You have to get stronger.
00:33:31
Speaker
Yeah.
00:33:31
Speaker
And if every run is easy breezy, where's the, you're not growing in that.
00:33:35
Speaker
Right.
00:33:36
Speaker
Yeah.
00:33:36
Speaker
And so I like having the data.
00:33:38
Speaker
Yeah, totally.
00:33:39
Speaker
Yeah.
00:33:40
Speaker
Okay, let's wrap this thing up.
00:33:41
Speaker
There's another thing that people use to get motivated a lot, I see.
00:33:45
Speaker
And it's not for, I'm not against it.
00:33:48
Speaker
And I just don't find myself using it.
00:33:50
Speaker
And that is that there's a huge community of like Facebook groups.
00:33:54
Speaker
And like I mentioned, the Rise and Run podcast, their community group is incredible.
00:33:59
Speaker
People encouraging other people.
00:34:01
Speaker
Maybe it's because you and I are both runners, so we have a support system within the same house.
00:34:06
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:34:07
Speaker
Maybe that's why we don't log on there all that much.
00:34:10
Speaker
But people, absolutely, especially if you don't have runners in your life, like join one of these Facebook groups because they're very encouraging and motivating.
00:34:20
Speaker
Totally.
00:34:20
Speaker
Or someone will say, this is what I did today and it was really hard, and you encourage them.
00:34:25
Speaker
Mm-hmm.
00:34:26
Speaker
In turn, you don't even know it, but, you know, now you feel a certain way.
00:34:30
Speaker
So that's it.
00:34:31
Speaker
That's just another resource.
00:34:32
Speaker
Yeah.
00:34:33
Speaker
All right.
00:34:33
Speaker
We talked about several ways we stay motivated, distracted, entertained.
00:34:38
Speaker
Anything else you want to share before we wrap this thing up?
00:34:40
Speaker
I kind of just want to get a training update from you if you've got a training update.
00:34:44
Speaker
So do you have anything else to share, first of all?
00:34:45
Speaker
No.
00:34:46
Speaker
Okay.

Erica's Progress and Episode Conclusion

00:34:48
Speaker
Why don't you give us a training update?
00:34:49
Speaker
How's your training going?
00:34:51
Speaker
Training's going good.
00:34:52
Speaker
My time is getting better every week, which is good.
00:34:57
Speaker
Especially after having come off of a two-month no-run period.
00:35:01
Speaker
It's kind of a starting over.
00:35:03
Speaker
So that's been encouraging.
00:35:05
Speaker
It is so hot and humid.
00:35:07
Speaker
I feel like we say this every episode, but it is just hot.
00:35:11
Speaker
And I know the rest of the country is hot too.
00:35:13
Speaker
I get it.
00:35:13
Speaker
I get it.
00:35:14
Speaker
It's not just us.
00:35:14
Speaker
It's the humidity.
00:35:15
Speaker
Yeah, I get it.
00:35:16
Speaker
For sure.
00:35:17
Speaker
And then, I mean, it would not be a run Disney season without some sort of injury, right?
00:35:24
Speaker
So this season I'm running super strong.
00:35:27
Speaker
My legs feel good.
00:35:28
Speaker
I haven't had any injuries.
00:35:30
Speaker
And then the other day I was wearing shoes.
00:35:33
Speaker
Okay.
00:35:34
Speaker
I have learned my lesson because I have broken several toes over the last few years.
00:35:37
Speaker
And so now I don't walk around our house with those shoes on.
00:35:40
Speaker
I was wearing shoes.
00:35:41
Speaker
I also did kick a two by four.
00:35:43
Speaker
So I was like, are you kidding me?
00:35:48
Speaker
Uh, so I don't think my toe is broken.
00:35:51
Speaker
The toenail is completely black.
00:35:53
Speaker
So gross.
00:35:54
Speaker
But we'll save it for another episode because this is getting long and we've got to get out of here.
00:35:58
Speaker
But we'll need to share the stories of how many toes you've broken.
00:36:03
Speaker
It's ridiculous.
00:36:04
Speaker
Yep.
00:36:04
Speaker
Save it.
00:36:05
Speaker
Save it.
00:36:05
Speaker
Save it.
00:36:05
Speaker
Leave us with something inspiring, Erica.
00:36:07
Speaker
Get us out of here.
00:36:08
Speaker
What, you know, we've talked about being motivated and inspired.
00:36:11
Speaker
You got anything encouraging for us?
00:36:13
Speaker
Say something cheesy.
00:36:14
Speaker
Something cheesy.
00:36:15
Speaker
I would say the only bad run is the one that didn't happen.
00:36:19
Speaker
Totally.
00:36:19
Speaker
So get out there, do your training.
00:36:21
Speaker
If you find yourself on the weekend doing a long run and you feel like you physically cannot run another step, just walk, just speed walk for, you know, a little bit, um, the miles being on your feet for the miles.
00:36:34
Speaker
That's what matters.
00:36:35
Speaker
So just don't skip the run.
00:36:36
Speaker
Just get out there and do it.
00:36:38
Speaker
That's right.
00:36:39
Speaker
Love it.
00:36:39
Speaker
Thank you guys for listening to this episode of the podcast.
00:36:42
Speaker
Again, we're AJ and Erica.
00:36:43
Speaker
We're so thrilled to be a part of your journey.
00:36:45
Speaker
If you've got questions or anything like that, absolutely email us, send us a message, anything like that.
00:36:50
Speaker
And leave us a review.
00:36:51
Speaker
You leave us a review, I will make Erica read it on the podcast.
00:36:56
Speaker
So the reason we'd love the review is because we'd just love to know what's working and if we're being helpful and where you're at.
