Introduction and Excitement for Peachtree City Classic

00:00:00
Speaker
This morning is the Peachtree City Classic. AJ, are you excited? I'm very excited. I'm gonna crush this thing. We're gonna crush this thing.
00:00:14
Speaker
Hey everyone, this is a bonus episode of the One More Run podcast, which means we're deviating off our normal format for just a second. We're going to talk about a recent race that we did.
00:00:24
Speaker
So kind of a race recap. Erica, the goal here is is twofold, I think, which is different than our normal episodes. I want to share some of the things maybe we learned in the race. Yeah.
00:00:35
Speaker
Right. And two, I want, if people want to consider this race or any of the races we ever cover in a bonus episode, if they're considering that race or they'd never heard of it and they're like, oh, actually yeah I'd like to do that. That sounds fun. yeah Or they were thinking about it and they're like, well, based off that information, I'm going to look at another option.
00:00:53
Speaker
So if it's, if it's helpful in that way, great. Normally we're here to, you know, motivate and inspire and educate on the run Disney side of things, but we run other races too. We do. And so today we're going to talk about our recent race.
00:01:07
Speaker
And that was actually this morning. Yes.

Race Details and Special Features

00:01:10
Speaker
Well, we're recording this on Saturday, so the episode won't come out today. But Saturday, October 18th, we ran the Peachtree City Classic.
00:01:19
Speaker
Yes. Would you mind describing just kind of what it is, high level for people who maybe didn't hear our episode where we previewed this race? um You want to talk about it? Yeah. So this is an awesome race. That's going to be in the South side of Atlanta.
00:01:31
Speaker
This was their 45th anniversary, which is awesome. It is our third time running it. And there are two race options. They have a 5k and 15k. That's right. We did the 15k this morning. It was two different courses and the 5k goes first and the 15k goes about 15 minutes later.
00:01:47
Speaker
And we, you're right. We did the 15k. If you're unfamiliar, cause 15k is a little bit of an unusual distance. a weird number um That is a, is 9.3 miles. Yes. right, today's the 15K. We just hit the restroom.
00:02:00
Speaker
Well, you got to do that before the race. What a way to start a video. Yep. So everyone was lined up at the porta potties. We went to the far porta potties where no at. So it's very quiet where we're at, but it's very loud at the start line. So we're headed back that way. Erica, have you hit this distance in a run recently or not yet?
00:02:14
Speaker
um I mean, definitely before my break, but not since I so it's been if few injured myself. Yes. All right. So today's a testing run. That is correct. Six miles as long as I've gone since. There's Tom's coffee for after the race.
00:02:26
Speaker
OK. All right. um That's it for now. Maybe we'll vlog from the course. We'll see. So why did we choose to do this? Yeah. Well, first of all, we had a long run on our calendar today anyway, for marathon training. So it it worked out well.
00:02:41
Speaker
Um, as we will talk about, I'm sure more in this little episode, um, running in Peachtree city is just really special. It's, it's basically like running through the woods. It's very quiet, very peaceful. There's wildlife. You may see deer. Um, you know, it's just, it's really nice. And so if I'm not running at Disney, Peachtree city is definitely my favorite place to run.
00:03:01
Speaker
Yes, it's they have 100 miles, or actually more than 100 miles of multi-use path, which is primarily meant for golf carts, walkers, runners, and bikers, yeah right?
00:03:13
Speaker
And they shut down part of the part of that path system for this race. And it's just a beautiful thing. Would you say that's what makes this race unique? Totally. Is there anything else that you would say makes this kind of a special or different race, or is it really the atmosphere that you're running in? think just really the atmosphere. Yeah.
00:03:29
Speaker
It's just really pretty. Yep. Um, I, it starts out on the road. It's a little bit crowded in the beginning. It feels just like a race, you know, and you know, you're kind of bumping shoulders, you know, with people and whatever. And, you know, you just have that race feeling at the beginning.
00:03:42
Speaker
Uh, but about two or three mile, I would say three miles in you get off of the road and you're in the paths. And the minute you hit the path, I feel like you just have freedom yeah space. Everyone's spaced out a little bit and it's just a beautiful run.
00:03:55
Speaker
Yeah. It's, there's a good amount of um uphill and downhill. Yes, there are. um And there are several tunnels, which we're used to, but if you've never, you know, run through the woods on the golf cart path and through a tunnel, it could be fun and exciting. Yeah. The tunnel goes under the roads so that, you know, ah people don't really ever have to deal with traffic, you know, on the multi-use path system. And so, yeah, they're, they're pretty fun.
00:04:16
Speaker
Yeah. Um, let's talk about the start line. Yes.

Kristen's Return and Running Together

00:04:19
Speaker
So we said the 5k goes first and we had a friend running the 5k. One of the things also I loved about this was we got to see several people we knew.
00:04:28
Speaker
it felt very fun just to, you know, coming out of the porta potty, you know, Oh, Hey, you know, you see somebody. And so that was really nice for us just because it's close to home for us. Right. yeah And so that felt good, but we had a friend who was on the pod yeah podcast a few weeks ago.
00:04:43
Speaker
Um, Kristen ran the five K yes you want to talk about seeing Kristen at the start line? Yeah, it was just really exciting. I know it's like maybe her first time back in, in just a little bit. Um, she's not brand new to running, but I think it's been a minute maybe since she's run. And so it was awesome to see her and to, you know, just kind of be excited with her. She gave you a pretty big hug. Yeah. Yeah. So it was awesome to see. So it's awesome. We're, we're just, we're proud of all of our friends that get out there and, you know, push themselves. I liked her photo that she sent us with her medal.
00:05:12
Speaker
Yes. Finish line. Yes. yeah yeah um Look, you know, whatever your time, but it doesn't really matter. Like this, these things are hard. Yeah. You know, totally. Wherever you're at in your training, you did it. Yeah. You weren't at home. You didn't make an excuse. You didn't, you know, I mean, you got out there and did it. So Kristen, we were super proud of you. So proud of you. Super excited to cheer you on at Princess in February. Absolutely. That's going be good. and Okay. So this race we ran together, we did the 15K. So we ran together. How was that?
00:05:38
Speaker
It was fun. Okay. I always love anytime we run together. Okay. You sure it was fun? It was. Sometimes I know that, you know, i you know, Hey, you have to AJ slow down for a second. You know, like I understand that, you know, and whatever. so everything went fine.
00:05:52
Speaker
Yeah. Any good moments, bad moments, just what you expected, what, any thoughts or, or do we need to move on? I feel like we had a really good balance of like, now we're listening to music and now we're talking. Like we yeah we, you know, you joked about that last week on the podcast, but, um but no, it was, it was good. And I just love anytime that we can run together, you know, like when I'm feeling tired, like you're, you're still going. And so, and it helped that we synced our watches today. So yep that was really good.
00:06:17
Speaker
So we've been on the road this whole time, been on the road this whole time. And now we're going through a neighborhood. I'm going join or jump on that. The famous Peachtree City Pass. Beautiful pass. Looking forward to that.
00:06:29
Speaker
Race is going good. The paths here in Peachtree City are the best. Oh look, mile seven. Perfect. 2.3 to go. Easy peasy, that's like a Tuesday.
00:06:42
Speaker
but Okay, things are going average.

Challenges and Reflections

00:06:45
Speaker
Erica got a side stitch, my backpack's driving me a little bit crazy. but don't normally bring this camera, but never doing that again. Live and learn, I guess.
00:06:54
Speaker
This is why we practice before we run. Yeah, before marathon. yeah I will say that um i'm I've decided that when you're like really tired, which happens yeah to all of us, when you're really tired and you start speaking a little bit shorter than you normally would, I've decided not to take that personally anymore. That's good.
00:07:13
Speaker
You know, when you're like, AJ, we're walking. And I'm like, I'm like, yeah, okay, cool. You know, like, like I used to, I think, take it a little more personal, you know, or you'd be like, okay, it's time to run. Like, let's go, you know, and I'm like fiddling with my backpack, which actually was a struggle for me. It today.
00:07:30
Speaker
ah But that's okay. Like, um, in the same vein, yeah when you're like looking at your watch repeatedly, I'm like, am I going too slow for you? But like now I just, I did have a moment of clarity with that Well, it's because you kept doing it. Like I, the first 20 times, like I just ignored it, but yeah.
00:07:45
Speaker
But i mean, to what you were saying, like now I don't let that bother me. yeah um And also I know that when ah it's time for me to start running again and you're doing something in your backpack, I don't wait anymore. I'm like, oh, he's going to catch me. Like he'll just or and or like you're so good at like running and like messing with stuff at the same time. Oh, yeah. Like I don't I used to worry that like, oh, do i need to wait for him now? I'm like, oh, no, he can run and put all that back in there. Today was not that day for me of like dealing with my backpack very well. So the short story there is that I brought different cameras. Like I wanted to kind of record yeah some stuff, you know, because where I'm very familiar with the course and I thought this would be a good one to like film some stuff, you know you know, with my cameras. I brought two two cameras and a microphone and all this whatever.
00:08:28
Speaker
And it was amazing. ah a pain. yeah I mean, like I hadn't run with this camera. Like it was, it was, it nothing fit. Like it fit when I packed it, but it didn't fit any other time, you know? And it was like poking me in the back. And so I kept trying to fix it because I knew we had seven more miles, six more miles. I kept trying to fix it and man, it was driving me nuts. I'm so sorry that you didn't deal with that.
00:08:51
Speaker
This is why we tell people try stuff before I will not bring the camera that I brought today. i will never bring it again. Yeah. You know, it was too painful to deal with. And I was very distracted. and I'm just hoping the footage is good because that will like, either that or it's like terrible footage and it's like just of the sky.
00:09:09
Speaker
yeah i mean, you shot it, so it's going to be great. good Yeah. just yeah we'll Well, we'll find out. Yes. Um, you haven't run in a little bit because of just other injury stuff. Yeah. Um, you're just health stuff, right? so stuff getting in the way of your training, but you did 9.3 miles today. How did it go?
00:09:26
Speaker
It was good. I was tired for the last two the I'd only run twice before this in the last month, basically. Um, and the longest I'd done was six miles. So I knew I was going to be tired. I thought I was going to to walk. Um,
00:09:38
Speaker
more Honestly, if you weren't there, I probably walked more, but we did. Sorry. No, no, it was good. We pushed through or I pushed through. So my hip flexor was a little tender, but nothing major. So okay yeah, it was good.
00:09:51
Speaker
Encouraging or discouraging as part of your overall training now towards marathon. I didn't prep you with this question. Yeah. So, um, multiple answers for that. So discouraging and that, um, I had been doing a lot of strength training and my time had drastically improved, yeah um up until three weeks ago or four weeks ago now.
00:10:11
Speaker
And so that was frustrating. My time was still fine today. I was happy with my time today. i think you should be, but Knowing that I had been faster like a month ago, that's frustrating. But I'm also, and I said this on the course, like today I'm choosing to be grateful for the fact that I dealt with all this stuff 10 weeks before the marathon and not like if, if I had a had to have three weeks off two weeks before the marathon, like that would have been terrible. right And I have done that before. yeah so um, as anyway, I just like, I was really fingers crossed, like that this was going to be the year that i the race year that I ran without an injury. yeah
00:10:47
Speaker
Didn't think it was going to be from ribs and kidney stone, but maybe one of these years I'll run without an injury. I've said it before, Erica, you are so much tougher than i am. I know I'm faster. yeah I'm just stubborn, but thank you.
00:11:01
Speaker
Yeah, you're right. That's it. so That's it. Moving on. just No, Erica, you're so much tougher than I am. Like you push through stuff like today, you know, you were dealing with whatever. And yeah, it's really easy for someone who's not had to deal with an injury or is not dealing with one at the time. So I'm always, always proud of you.
00:11:17
Speaker
Thank you. I appreciate that. Of course.

Unexpected Joys and Race Atmosphere

00:11:19
Speaker
Okay. Addie, our youngest yes um now has her driver's permit. So she was able to take the golf cart yeah and meet us on multiple spots on the course as a spectator, but you didn't know that was coming. I did not.
00:11:33
Speaker
So the first spot was about mile two and she's on the side road with a custom sign that she made yes and screaming your name.
00:11:41
Speaker
Go, Erica! Hey! Hey!
00:11:45
Speaker
Hey, Annie! Hi! oh
00:11:50
Speaker
are you like my choiceist there how love it Oh my gosh. It was awesome. We had Jesse. Well, and Zach at the end, but we had our friends Zach and Jesse turn us on for marathon this last year, but otherwise we've never really had spectators for our races. And so I mean, random people, but not people, we right? Not people that we know. Yes.
00:12:09
Speaker
Um, and so seeing her there was like, of course I immediately started crying cause that's what I do, but it just, it means a lot. And I told her it was very sweet. And then she proceeded to like, meet us several more times along the course with different signs every single time. So that was fun and just really sweet of her.
00:12:26
Speaker
what's i say or don't Run faster or don't. It's none of my business. Can get my picture with you? Sure. Okay, thank you.
00:12:38
Speaker
Bye! Addy! Your arms are killing me. I My legs are killing me. It was her idea. And I'll give you the behind the scenes that you didn't know about. The other night we had to, I'm doing quotes, go to the grocery store uhu and we did the course and we went and mapped out, can you get there um you know on the golf cart without driving on the race course? Because you know that that'd be the challenge. So we went and found all those spots. Oh, that's awesome. But it was all her idea. It was not me. That was are very sweet of her. yeah So you enjoyed that?
00:13:11
Speaker
That was, yeah, my favorite part probably. Oh, good. Yeah. Okay. That makes me happy. Yeah. Okay. So that might as you're probably your favorite experiential thing. wherever Did you have a favorite part of the course itself or least favorite part of the course?
00:13:24
Speaker
My least favorite part of the course is the very end. So, and I forgot to warn Kristen about this. We were texting about it after we got home. Yeah. um the the What do you call that at the end?
00:13:38
Speaker
ah Well, you basically run on a road that turns into a parking lot. hu And so like the last little chute of the race. That's what I, that's like, you know, they have gate on the sides or whatever yeah in the parking lot is uphill. Yeah. So the chute is uphill and I knew that and I remembered that and that's not ah huge deal. Although the first time that we did it, I was like, oh my gosh, we're finishing uphill. Yeah. But the problem is that before you even get to the uphill chute,
00:14:02
Speaker
Uh-huh. The road is uphill. The road is uphill too. So you're like, you know, you're like, oh, I can hear people. I can see the end. Like we're close. And so you start like giving it all you've got. That's right. And then you're like running uphill, running uphill, running uphill. And you're like, oh I'm getting kind of tired now, but everyone's staring at me.
00:14:18
Speaker
And then you're turning and you're going uphill more. So that's my least favorite part of the course. But you just have to like keep it in the back of your mind so that you save a little bit to be able to ye jet up those hills. That's right.
00:14:32
Speaker
Yeah. the So the the uphill on the road, they like, yes, everything you just said where like people are watching, you know, because they're waiting for their finisher, you know. yeah and so there's lots of people.
00:14:43
Speaker
And then um the photographer is there too. Oh, yeah. And she was at the top of the hill ahha and we were at the bottom. And you know she was going to take your picture at some point. you're like, I'm going take your please just take it now and so I can walk or something. yeah And she didn't, she had her camera down waiting, waiting, waiting. Cause she obviously knew when was the right spot to take a picture. yeah I'm thinking in my head, like raise that camera lady, take the picture. i know yeah though and Sure enough, we got close enough. She snapped, snapped, snapped. But then we passed them. And of course i I would notice the video guy was sitting next to her and I knew he was recording video, yeah you know? And I'm like,
00:15:18
Speaker
Literally, I'm like, I can't stop now. And i have to like give him a cool like point and like, yeah. Because I know how it is when you're the video guy. You don't want people to just you know right huffing and puffing and dying. yeah know and yeah So anyway, so I had to make a cool face for him.
00:15:35
Speaker
Right. Then you're right. You, we make a right hand turn in and you're still going uphill and you're like, it's just one of those, like do you think you've gotten to the top of a hill mentally and then you're like, oh, that's right.
00:15:47
Speaker
This is halfway. Right, right, right, right. And it's not like the hill is like super, super steep. It's not like, it's just that after you've run nine miles, You're like, why is uphill? Yes. And it's everything we just said. Everyone's watching.
00:16:01
Speaker
The photographer is there. You're like smiling and trying to run like without breathing heavy. And it's terrible. Yep. Yep. I remember last year I ran this race really hard for time or whatever. Yeah. And I remember like doing that last stretch just, I mean, my finish line photo or whatever is really bad because I had just a frown on my face.
00:16:21
Speaker
Right. Like a scowl. Like who did this? Yes. Yes. So that's instead turning left, we turn right and we go downhill. that's right yeah Yeah, they should do that. There were a couple of great parts of the course that I really loved where it was just downhill winding yeah through that. And you you couldn't even see runners ahead. Even though, you know, there were some runners ahead of you, and you almost didn't even see them for a little bit because they're just winding, but it was nice and gradual downhill. I also like going by the lake.
00:16:47
Speaker
Oh yeah. I really like that. Just something, you breeze and right there's a great water station right there where they're cheering for you. So. Anyway, those are my leap my least favorite and favorite parts. You said it to me, I think, was it mile nine? You said, AJ, I'm running on fumes.
00:17:04
Speaker
That was the the exact words you said. Those were my exact words. And I think after that, my exact words were, we're not using this on the podcast. And yet here we are. i think that was a different phrase you said. and Okay. Well, let's not talk about it, but, uh, yeah.
00:17:19
Speaker
So yes, basically I knew we were going to be going uphill. I forgot about the, the pre-hill before the hill, but, um, but I knew that you were going to try to push me and the last. Oh, that's what you said. You said, AJ, when we get to the end, you're going to want to say, come on, let's do this. yeah You got this. And you're like, don't you dare. I'm running on fumes.
00:17:38
Speaker
Right. Yeah. Just because, like I said a few minutes ago, like I hadn't run past six. And so I already was like, I'm i'm already giving it everything I have to finish without walking again.
00:17:50
Speaker
That's right. Yes. It was just a good, you know, smile and laugh moment for me. Yeah. You know, you were honest and it also informed me of how to handle the end. Right. You know, and I didn't mind. Any other fun stories or anything, Erica? We did run in, run Disney kind of costume-ish.

Fun with Costumes and Promotions

00:18:07
Speaker
We did, which I would like to say for the record was your idea. It was totally my idea. I brought it up last night and I said, i didn't want to run like Mickey Mouse or like super blatantly obvious, but I just posed the idea.
00:18:18
Speaker
You want to do a little subtle Disney there? And so we did, the most subtle thing I had was a Haunted Mansion yeah wallpaper. ah And so I did that and you wore, what was yours? Um, so I just coordinated in purple. So I was wearing crowned athletics. It was actually the little mermaid top, the purple top with a black skirt. Did you, did you feel like we were out of place?
00:18:38
Speaker
When we first got there, I felt like people were like, look at them running in their outfits or whatever. Like I heard a couple of people talking about it, but jealous, you know, whatever. Not everyone can be as cool as us. Yeah. Yeah, people did like- that and then they did mention it at the finish line too, did hear him? He was like, they're both wearing purple. Yeah, but I didn't appreciate that. Like I needed like specifically like, oh man, look, they you know run Disney, Haunted Mansion. Like needed something specific.
00:19:05
Speaker
And he just said they're in purple. um Someone behind you today asked if you were wearing the Grinch on your shirt. I was like, the Grinch? It's the Haunted Mansion wallpaper. Okay. I'm glad i've ever been to disney i but I didn't hear that one because I don't want to pass off too much judgment, but I would have had a hard time with that one. Yeah.
00:19:22
Speaker
Yeah. We did also run funny stories. I can't show it right now on the video, but um we got temporary tattoos yes that have the podcast logo on it We did. I wore mine on my shoulder. So if you were running behind me, people would be like, what's one more run the podcast?
00:19:37
Speaker
That's right. And I got mine on my arm. so I don't know if they're going to show in any of the race photos or whatever, but hopefully. yeah So those are cool. Any other fun stories or anything? Nope.

Enduring Love for the Race and Lessons Learned

00:19:44
Speaker
Okay. Would you do this race again? Absolutely. Okay.
00:19:48
Speaker
I will likely do it every year um as long as I'm running just because short of Disney, Peachtree City is the most magical place to run for me. Yeah. It is a wonderful place to run. It is. Okay. If you don't have anything else, this was fun just to talk through. Yeah. Oh, oh, did you learn anything?
00:20:03
Speaker
I guess that was one of our objectives at the beginning. I learned that I can't take a backpack full of camera stuff or not the cameras that I tried to bring. I was too frustrating. My snacks were in there too. They kept getting in the way. Then I crumpled my my waffle and I was just like trying not to be mad.
00:20:18
Speaker
Yeah. You know, but it kind of impacted my race. So I just learned, hey, this is again, one of those things you try at home, right? I'm glad I didn't try to bring this on the marathon or a race for time or anything. So my next race, I'm not bringing this, yeah you know, this setup, right? So in a in a good way, that was something I learned. Is there anything you learned?
00:20:35
Speaker
Yeah. I brought my hot hands and I had them in my pockets yeah under my skirt. But unlike Disney, there's not like people throwing stuff off along the course. You can't just throw it. Yeah. And you certainly can't throw stuff on the ground in Peachtree City. I mean, it's beautiful. So yeah.
00:20:50
Speaker
So I ran like with my legs pretty hot with these hot hands in them for a while. Yeah. um And then I was like running, carrying them. So I was glad when I found a trash can. Yes. um But yeah yeah, any other local races that I do or non-Disney races, I should say, I'd probably get rid of those. yeah It's different when they, you know, they're coming through like a sweeping truck right or something, but this was out in the woods on a path system where you're like, no, like I'm not dropping this. Right. No way. Right. Yeah.
00:21:17
Speaker
Okay. All right. Anything else you learned or is that it for this bonus episode? Hopefully these bonus episodes are good and helpful yeah and entertaining if nothing else. Absolutely. All right. We will be back with a normal episode soon.
00:21:29
Speaker
ah For now, we'll catch you. i don't know what to say. yeah but How do I get out of this now? We'll see you next Wednesday morning for one more run the podcast. Perfect. That's perfect.
00:21:45
