The Amazing Rewatch: Hello everybody, welcome back to The Amazing Rewatch. Today we are talking about Season 20, Episode 3. And...
The Amazing Rewatch: Ended the last leg in Argentina for the second. leg in a row and We predicted we would be staying in South America.
The Amazing Rewatch: And we are. Yeah. but Did I put the... Did I predict that? Did I predict that we would actually be... I can't remember. I think you said staying in South America. Okay. And then I confirmed, yes, we were, but I didn't tell you which country, but I said it's a new one. Okay. And it is, it's Paraguay.
The Amazing Rewatch: yes so um our first team to depart were rachel and dave at 12 22 a .m and it says fly to Asuncion Paraguay.
The Amazing Rewatch: And travel by taxi to... the equipment supply company metallurgica punta de rieles and search for your next clip They have $200 for the Slay the Race.
The Amazing Rewatch: And then Art and JJ depart at 1225, not long after them. Those two teens get to the airport. And they see there is a flight that will depart at 8 45 a .m.
The Amazing Rewatch: When they go to the ticket counter, the person tells them. it's At the moment, it is very full. Mhm. And they asked to be put on standby. And then they don't tell us the departure times of any of the other. racers we just see they all arrive at the airport and they're trying to figure out what to do. Other teams are also getting on the...
The Amazing Rewatch: Waitlist? Yeah, I think like... Everybody gets on the standby list for that. Flight. But then the next... Flight. To leave after that would be at 1040.
The Amazing Rewatch: something like that yeah So basically two hours later. And. We talked about this a few times throughout the... seasons but like Art and JJ...
The Amazing Rewatch: These first... couple episodes they've been at the front of the pack and they always are saying like They're following us. They're following us. We're running the race for people. We're basically doing, making all the decisions and they're, you know.
The Amazing Rewatch: It's like, no. Everybody's just going to the same same place. You just got there before they did, but they're not following you specifically. like they're saying They keep saying, we're just running the race for everybody.
The Amazing Rewatch: and I mean the race has been around long enough now that Anybody that's on it has seen previous seasons and they know to go put themselves on the wait list for. like on standby for a flight that's leaving that's full.
The Amazing Rewatch: Or if the... clue tells you to go to this place and you guys all go there it's not because you are being followed by everyone it's just that's where everybody's going everybody's going It's annoying.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um, so yeah, everybody gets on standby, but... Only a few teams end up getting on that flight. Art and JJ get on there and...
The Amazing Rewatch: dave Rachel and Dave. and then also surprisingly bopper and mark and Um... nary and jamie nary and jamie So. Because we have interviewed race people. And we know that.
The Amazing Rewatch: not only do they have the two teams that are On the team. Or the two people on the team. They also have two crew members with them. Yeah. So that means. The flight went from full to having 16 people that could get on that flight. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: That's crazy. Yeah. And. Nowadays, I feel like... That would not be the case. They overbook every anymore single flight. That just happened to us when we were on the way to our... cruise in Orlando.
The Amazing Rewatch: And they won. One is they overbooked the flight and two, it was too hot. And they had to make less people on the flight. mm -hmm which So they were offering like $1 ,000 a person. Yeah. They were offering like $1 ,000. At one point it was $1 ,500 a person if you wanted to take a...
The Amazing Rewatch: layover in LA and then take a red eye to Orlando. But yeah, they're not like they don't have just like 16 seats available on flights anymore. Yeah. Actually...
The Amazing Rewatch: For us, the same trip when we... it was really weird because we got to salt lake and we were like waiting for our flight so half of us were on the delta flight sadie was on the delta flight with half of our family. And then.
The Amazing Rewatch: Me and my family were. Um. On a Southwest, there was like eight of us on that flight. And. We were in Salt Lake and we all got a notification on our phones that said,
The Amazing Rewatch: the flight from Nashville to Orlando was cancelled. but it was still showing up. on our app but we got a text that said it was canceled and when I went up to the desk to ask what was going on They said, oh.
The Amazing Rewatch: It's still... going. The Nashville to Orlando flight is still going. So... Nobody knew what was happening. So what ended up happening, we... We made it to Nashville and then we like checked in and the flight that we were originally supposed to be on was still on the board.
The Amazing Rewatch: But we had already been rebooked to a different flight. So it was really weird that nobody knew what was happening. I asked the gate agent in Nashville and they're like, oh, yeah, for some reason, the flight that you were supposed to be on is now making an extra stop in Dallas and then going to Orlando. So you can stay on that flight if you want to, or you can take this later flight.
The Amazing Rewatch: From Nashville to... Orlando and it will get you there faster. But that second flight. Was only like. when we got on it was full but the flight attendants were like yeah this flight was only One third booked. And now we're full because they moved basically everybody from.
The Amazing Rewatch: The one flight to the next. Weird. I know. But I don't think I've been on a plane that was only one third full in like... Years. Yeah. So. the one time when we flew home from london and we could all get our own full entire row yeah i mean but that was 2021 so that was kind of different but Yeah. yeah So anyway. random side tangent about flights but yeah the they the four teams were able to get on the earlier flight.
The Amazing Rewatch: And then all the other teams will be leaving at 1040. So about two hours later. So that first flight lands and the teams run out of the airport and get in taxis to go to that equipment supply place.
The Amazing Rewatch: art and jj right first they find the clue quickly so it's like a big outdoor open field type of thing. They have to climb these slides. To go over the fence again. into Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: um And it has a bunch of... little Barbecue grills. and yeah Yeah, it's kind of random. And they get in there and they find a clue in a grill and it's a detour and the choices are stack up or strung out.
The Amazing Rewatch: So for stacked up, they have to go to the largest fruit market in Paraguay and stack. um watermelons into a perfectly formed 10 by 10 pyramid like the local vendors do.
The Amazing Rewatch: And for Strung Out, they need to go to an auditorium and choose a harp. and which is the National Instrument of Paraguay. and follow a demonstration to show them how to attach 36 strings to the instrument to get ready for tuning And I think, because we've already seen...
The Amazing Rewatch: That it's getting hot. They're already talking about how hot it is. And we... Are. You don't have to play the harp, but we're like Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: We would probably choose the thing with music. where you get to be inside. Yes, and outside it says that you just have to prepare it. To be tuned. You don't have to actually tune it. Yeah. so you just have to string the harp so yeah i think we would definitely choose hars Yeah, the strung out. But... Not very many people chose this one. R and JJ chose stacked up. Mark and Bopper chose stacked up.
The Amazing Rewatch: nary and jamie and rachel and dave so those are the four teams on the first flight they all chose stocked up. and art and jj get there first but the other teams are not far behind and then the second flight arrives.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. So... um The teams are working on stacking their watermelons and... Art and JJ get their stack. pretty quickly and do a really good job, I guess. I don't know how they did it. so quickly compared to everybody else but it says they get the clue that says make your way to the plaza de la democracia cross yet Thank you. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: And. So they had their And then all the other teens who are still there, like, from the first flight. all their stacks start falling And... They're getting frustrated So.
The Amazing Rewatch: Rachel and Dave decide they want to switch detours. Dave at this point says he wants to use the express pass. But Rachel says no. She says nope, nope, nope, nope, nope.
The Amazing Rewatch: And Mark and Bopper... And Nary and Jamie also switch detours. And as Mark and Bopper are leaving this detour, they get out there and the Mississippi girls, I can't remember. Carrie and Stacey. Carrie and Stacey arrive. And they're like, oh, how was it? And they're like, oh, not too bad. It only took us two hours.
The Amazing Rewatch: And then they'd get in their cab and leave. yeah That Mark and Bob are getting. Yeah. Carrie and Stacey's cab. And then when Carrie and Stacey walk in, they see a few stacks of watermelons, just like. Uh... Fallen all over the place. Yeah, just scattered all over. And they immediately decided to change and do the other one. Yeah. And they're like, oh, they took our cab. and So they now have to find a new taxi.
The Amazing Rewatch: But yeah, so the teams from the second flight, Rachel and Brendan, Stacey and Carrie, Joey and Danny and Vanessa and Ralph all choose stacked up. And. Andrew and Elliot were the only team that initially chose Strung Out.
The Amazing Rewatch: And because... Elliot is... a musician and he's like i've strung guitars before i should be able to do this so they go to that one And.
The Amazing Rewatch: Uh... Yeah, so now... most A lot of the teams are switching. But this is when Art and JJ are getting to the next clue, and it's a roadblock. And it says, who's ready to use their head?
The Amazing Rewatch: They have to balance a bottle on top of their heads and perform a choreographed dance without breaking the bottle. If they break all of the provided bottles, they receive a two -hour penalty. And how many did you think that were on maybe 50? Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: Probably about that. So Art is going to do the throat block. mm -hmm So. Um. Back at the... detours.
The Amazing Rewatch: um The second group is stacking their watermelons. and It's a little bit chaotic They're all kind of there at the same time trying to rush. And. They have these dollies that they can use to get the watermelons off the truck and move them over to their stack. And Vanessa, she's telling her Ralph, she says.
The Amazing Rewatch: to rachel and brendan are like on a truck she's like block them in block them in use the thing to Use the cart and block him in. Yeah, and Raph's like... No. Yeah, he says no. no worry about yourself worry but let's worry about ourselves yeah and then Rachel is up in the Um,
The Amazing Rewatch: truck like bending over trying to pick up watermelons and Vanessa's like oh my gosh I can see like her whole But like I can see through those. I can see. And she's like. making fun of her and making her feel really self -conscious and bad about it.
The Amazing Rewatch: It's very, very... mean girl behavior like it's It's awful And the way they make it. edited for us to view it's like rachel kind of feels embarrassed and feels bad and she goes to brendan and she's like we need to switch right now like this is I don't want to be here. and you know stuff like that and they switch pretty quickly And you get in the cab and Brendan's like. Oh, she's just a mean, she's so mean. and like rachel's like yeah
The Amazing Rewatch: And it really was. So I don't know if that's how it was in real life. I don't know how it could be edited I don't know how it could have been different and be edited this way like I just feel like that's really how it was you know I would try to give people the benefit of the doubt or whatever sometimes I just like make content to be entertaining, but it was very mean girl. yeah and it was
The Amazing Rewatch: But to be fair, Rachel didn't say very nice things about Vanessa on the way. She's like got her whole makeup face and yeah she, you know, so she was saying mean things too, but it was kind of more in like. retaliation because her feelings were hurt. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: so But it ended up being a good idea for them to pass because they and did really well at the other detour. So Art finishes the roadblock. And... um The clue they get says travel on foot to the S...
The Amazing Rewatch: Esalenade Antique. Kara for the pit stop of the slug of the race. The last student to check in may be eliminated. And they show up and they're team number one and they went on a trip to the Bahamas.
The Amazing Rewatch: yeah And they're way ahead of everybody else. Yeah, they ran a great leg. They like. Did very well at both tasks. I hope they tell us the departure times next episode. I know, because I want to see the...
The Amazing Rewatch: the difference here between them and the rest of everybody else. So. Bopper and Mark, Nary and Jamie, and the twins arrive at the harp detour at the same time. So now basically...
The Amazing Rewatch: everybody else that was on both flights are now kind of like even playing field after switching detours you know all this kind of stuff so Um. Carrie and Stacey and Rachel and Dave also arrive and Rachel and Dave decide then to use their express pass. And Dave. was like, we should have just used it earlier.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. I don't know. Well.
The Amazing Rewatch: but what it Is this a situation that we would have used an express pass? Because they got there all at the same time. i may i would have Well, I wouldn't have when he first said it because they hadn't even seen the teams from the second flight when he first said it. Yeah. So definitely not.
The Amazing Rewatch: Right. But when they arrived and saw that everybody else was there and like, but everybody had just started. It's not like everybody was. like an hour into this task right and they couldn't catch up yeah But.
The Amazing Rewatch: Anyway. That's... The reason to have it and they used it and they head to the roadblock and. dave is going to do it and he struggles very very much he ends up using all of his bottles And they... I have to take a two hour penalty. So they get to the pit stop.
The Amazing Rewatch: And. Their time starts, their two hour time. penalty starts when they check in. so I wonder, like... What if somebody showed up and they tried like two times and they knew it wasn't gonna be good and they just like go over to the table and like Throw everyone every single thing on the ground and just hurry and get the two -hour penalty. I actually thought that too. I was like, you really could. Like.
The Amazing Rewatch: ah Depending on how long it... Took. like maybe just like breaking all the bottles right at the very first. I wonder if they'd be like, okay, that's not very good sportsmanship. Like you got to actually try or if they would be, i don' know I don't know. Maybe I feel like it'd be something.
The Amazing Rewatch: boston rob would i was just thinking that's like the meat challenge like okay everybody just break your bottles yeah and and then we'll all have a two -hour penalty and yeah yeah but some people i mean we'll get to it later but some people did much better at it dave was the only one that didn't mm -hmm ah finish it. So. um
The Amazing Rewatch: All the teams that switched from the watermelons to the harps are, like, happy to be inside an air -conditioned room. And they're finding this one much... easier. Brendan and Rachel, um like I said, did really well and they passed that one off. And then Mark and Bopper.
The Amazing Rewatch: are not far behind them Mm hmm. So we have... Joey and Danny and Vanessa and Ralph are like the only ones left at the watermelons and they're both kind of struggling. mm -hmm Ralph really wants to switch, but but Vanessa doesn't.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. And. So Carrie and Stacey and Nary and Jamie finish the harp detour. So... And Andrew and Elliot are the last ones there. At this point, they wanna switch detours.
The Amazing Rewatch: So they leave the... Theater. and go out and they can't really find a cab. And Joey and Danny pass off the watermelons. Oh, yeah. So that leaves... Vanessa and Ralph. Yeah. And so...
The Amazing Rewatch: And Andrew and Elliot can't find a cab. Slade. Change your mind again and go back. Say they're going to finish and then it seemed like their problem was that they had strung up. um strings quite a few they have to do 36 strings they had strung quite a few and then they had to go back and like unstring them because they missed a hole or something like that yeah And then Vanessa and Ralph, theirs just kept toppling like over and over and over.
The Amazing Rewatch: So how? i Andrew and Elliot decide to sweat i go back because they can't find a cab. And they're like, we're actually just going to try and finish. And Vanessa. Ralph, again, still really wants to switch and Vanessa just won't.
The Amazing Rewatch: And she is saying like, Ralph has a 13 year old daughter and We just want to show her that this if we are not going to quit. and it's like Well, you're not quitting. Like you just switched. You're switching tasks. Yeah. that's not that does Everybody does it all the time. Yeah. Because like some of their, you know, some of their.
The Amazing Rewatch: watermelon topples were like just like a few fell off the side and you know so you can stack them back up but the last one that happened it was like the whole thing yeah just kind of like caved in from the inside almost and so they basically had to start over from the beginning yeah And.
The Amazing Rewatch: So all the teams are arriving at the roadblock. We go back to Rachel and Dave and they're sitting there and it says there's about 47 minutes left. mm -hmm Then we go back to the roadblock. And so Rachel from Brendan and Rachel does it. Mark.
The Amazing Rewatch: Joey, Nary, and Carrie are all doing it about the same time. And Rachel finishes first. She did pretty good. She was really proud of herself. And then Joey was after her.
The Amazing Rewatch: They're both running and Rachel starts freaking out because Joey and Danny are right behind them. Yeah. I don't... I don't know why They don't know. They know they're not first. But they know that it's not last. So, like, why did she freak out so much that they were, like, right behind her? So, it was...
The Amazing Rewatch: They kept saying like six blocks away. It was like six blocks away and it kind of seemed a little bit uphill. And they had their bags and everything. So yeah, she was like running and she gets to the mat and she's kind of like She's like hyperventilating almost. And then she's like, I'm so embarrassed right now. and but and brendan keeps saying like you did you killed it you did so good
The Amazing Rewatch: And Rachel and Dave are sitting right there and their time is running down. Yeah. they At this point, it says 30 minutes. So... Brendan and Rachel are team number two, and Joey and Danny are team number three.
The Amazing Rewatch: Which is definitely the best that Joey and Danny have done. Yeah. they yeah Because they were bringing up the rear of the first two legs. Yeah. Mark finishes the roadblock next, then Nary.
The Amazing Rewatch: And. they're running up to the pit stop and like we see rachel and dave's time running down and it's like seconds it's like 14 13 and So. Mark and Bopper And Nary and Jamie get on the mat basically at the same time when Rachel and Dave literally have like one second left. yeah So Mark and Bopper are team four, Nary and Jamie are team five, and Rachel and Dave are team six. And Phil says that this is the first time that a team has not finished a task and gone to penalty and remained in the race.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah, I think it's weird that he described it that way because it's not that he didn't finish. He didn't give up. he Right. he just Part of the task was... if you don't do all the bottles, you have to wait.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. So I... thought that was a weird yeah it was like a weird description of that but Anyway. And then Carrie and Stacey, our team. seven. So before we get to the end of this, tell us about... Paraguay.
The Amazing Rewatch: Okay, so yeah, Paraguay, this is our first time in Paraguay. um This is our 79th country so far. Wow. It's our second. country of this season.
The Amazing Rewatch: Paraguay is one of South America's... a South American company. Company? Sorry, there was ah like the next line. It said company. It's like, I don't know. Paraguay is a South American... country.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um, It has... Uh, official name of the Republic of Paraguay. The capital is... Ascension. Mm -hmm.
The Amazing Rewatch: About 7 million people. It's a little bit smaller than California. They speak Spanish. Seven million in the whole country or in Asuncion. in the country. okay It's a presidential republic. It gained independence from Spain in May of 1811.
The Amazing Rewatch: ah Neighbored by Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia. Paraguay is only one of two landlocked countries in South America, along with You know. Take a guess. Bolivia? Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: um the paraguay river divides the country in two there's eastern paraguay which is greener and wetter and more populated and then And that's where Asuncion is. And Western Paraguay is a lot more hot. and um has It says about 6 % of Paraguay's territory.
The Amazing Rewatch: but only a small fraction of its population.
The Amazing Rewatch: There's thunder. And because Paraguay has no coastline, the Paraguay...
The Amazing Rewatch: Um. No, I'm sorry. That's not interesting and Before Europeans arrived, much of present -day Paraguay was inhabited by the Guarani peoples. The gra Guarani were agricultural communities who cultivated crops like May's cassava and sweet potato.
The Amazing Rewatch: and Um... Then the Spanish arrived in the 1500s. Asunción was founded in 1537. And... There were relatively few Spanish women among the early settlers. Spanish men frequently formed relationships with Kwarani women.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um... And the Guarani culture and language still remains and is unusually influential.
The Amazing Rewatch: Paraguay declared independence from Spain in 1811, then it did something unusual. Rather than immediately integrating itself into the international trade and diplomacy, Paraguay became extraordinarily isolated.
The Amazing Rewatch: under the dictator José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia who ruled from 1814 to 1840. He deliberately limited foreign influence and attempted to make Paraguay kind of economically -sufficient.
The Amazing Rewatch: Later, rulers opened the country somewhat and invested in infrastructure and military development, and then Paraguay entered a war that nearly destroyed it. There was a Paraguayan war from 1864 to 1870 fought between Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um... called The War of the Triple Alliance. Never heard of that. mm -hmm Um... The Allies invaded Paraguay and eventually... eventually devastated the country.
The Amazing Rewatch: Paraguay lost an extraordinary population portion of its population. Um...
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. Not good?
The Amazing Rewatch: And... There's like lore or... People say that Paraguay can kind of became a country mostly of women. There was an enormous gender imbalance after the Paraguayan War because so many men had died. Women therefore played a crucial role in rebuilding the country's population, farms, households, and economy.
The Amazing Rewatch: Some of the more dramatic statistics will say like 90 % of Paraguay. Paraguayan men died. Hmm. Um. The basic story is true, but the precise numbers aren't certain.
The Amazing Rewatch: This war is... Consequences shaped Paraguay for generations. and
The Amazing Rewatch: Paraguay is one of the few countries whose national flag has different emblems on the front and the back. but I didn't know you could do that. um but Um... Guarani is also the name of the currency.
The Amazing Rewatch: One U .S. dollar converts to a thousand. guaranis So prices look enormous. Um... Football is huge there.
The Amazing Rewatch: It's a major agriculture. cultural export exporter like soybeans and beef and
The Amazing Rewatch: Um... has a surprisingly intense history for a place we don't hear much about. Yeah. I would say that's true. Because when we've been to Uruguay a couple of times now. We've been there. Oh, only once actually.
The Amazing Rewatch: And when we were researching it, it's very like progressive and kind of. And Paraguay sounds similar to Uruguay. but it doesn't seem like they Or as progressive. theyre But they had a huge setback for... a large part of their history. and yeah really affected them.
The Amazing Rewatch: You don't really hear about many people traveling there for... For leisure or business or really anything. Yeah. Missions. Yeah. Huh, interesting.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. So... I'm just saying I don't want to go there. I don't know if it would be like the top of my list, but. It's raining again. It's been raining.
The Amazing Rewatch: like on and off today there was like one that was like a huge yeah microbursts and it was like So windy and... Yeah, weird weather in Utah at last.
The Amazing Rewatch: Last long time. But more rain than we usually have, which is kind of nice. Yeah, we need it. so yeah Well, back to the show. so It's dark. Yeah, it's dark now. Ellie and Andrew and...
The Amazing Rewatch: are still doing the detour and Vanessa and Ralph are. And the way they edit it seems like they finish up about the same time. And they both think they're last. yeah And they still have to do the roadblock. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: Elliot and Andrew get to the roadblock first and Elliot does it. Then but Vanessa and Ralph arrive. And when they see that the twins are still there, they're like freaking out. Like, oh my gosh, I can't believe we still have a chance.
The Amazing Rewatch: And Ralph does the roadblock. It looks... Pretty neck and neck. like They both. you know they both break bottles they both look like they're gonna get close and then the bottle falls off because like the last part of the dance they have to get down on their stomach and like put their arms out so with a bottle on their head yeah so it doesn't look easy no but It looks like these bottles break really easily because... Like, even when they just catch him in their hands, they break.
The Amazing Rewatch: I would not be able to do that. I have like... An egg -shaped head because of headstands from Drill Team. Like, have you ever felt my head? Like, it literally has like a point to it at the top right there. So a bottle would not balance on my head.
The Amazing Rewatch: Well, we'll have to remember that when we're on the race that you can't do any bottle dancing. Yes, anything that has to balance on my head, it would not be good. i Which I think they do. They've done more than once. Have you ever? I want you to feel it, actually.
The Amazing Rewatch: Look at your... Like do you feel that ridge. Right there? yeah ah Yeah. probably not a good idea no Um... But Ralph actually ends up finishing. first and it doesn't seem that andrew or not andrew elliot is very far behind And Ralph and Vanessa are running and he's like, they cannot run us. And she's like, I know, I'm sorry. And that's probably true. Yeah, they look like they're running really fast. Yeah, and like Sadie said, it's uphill.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um, And it is really close, but Ralph and Vanessa... get there first and andrew and elliot are on the map. With them, right? They're standing there at the same time. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: So Ralph and Vanessa are team eight. Andrew and Elliot are eliminated. Yes. So I definitely want to see when Art and JJ depart and when Ralph and Vanessa depart. Like the difference between one and two and the difference between.
The Amazing Rewatch: seven and eight It's going to be really interesting. Mm hmm. And one in eight. Yeah. Yes. And then, yeah, the whole spread in between. but I don't...
The Amazing Rewatch: I don't know if it's because they're like so attractive, but. Aliyah and Andrew. made more of an impression on me. Then. being eliminated in the third.
The Amazing Rewatch: leg. Like, I remember that. Do they come back? No. Hmm. Yeah, I remember. I remember them too. So that that is interesting. So. Yeah. They are they are very handsome.
The Amazing Rewatch: Can you imagine being their mom and be like, wow, I made two. people that are this good looking.
The Amazing Rewatch: Well, okay, so. They... Have a race average. of... Eight.
The Amazing Rewatch: They took... Sixth place in the first leg, ninth, and then... Ninth again and we're eliminated. They're actually really, on this website, there's not one post race.
