Hello and welcome to the Daily Manchester City podcast on the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Jules Jordan-Probert and this is episode 42 of the podcast and today we'll be delivering another Friday forecast looking back at City's pretty horrendous week and also ahead to the trip to Brighton on Saturday alongside some of the other games being played by City's rivals in the Premier League this weekend.

joining me today is the force of nature that is jack ward how are we today
00:00:35
Jack
I'm good, actually. You know what? We're getting back to that little bit of optimism at the end of the week. We've had a bad week. We've had a bad couple of weeks at Manchester City. But you know what?
00:00:46
Jack
As ever, we're always turning things around come the end of the week. And just before that game, we're ready for our weekly heartbreak now, which seems to be the theme at the moment.
00:00:56
Jack
But no, optimistic. Optimistic.
00:00:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
wow and you say that but now the pleasantries are over We're here on the back of three consecutive defeats for City.
00:01:02
Jack
You wouldn't tell, would you? You
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Only the third time that has happened during Pep Guardiola's tenure, and the performances have possibly been more worrying than the results. Pep has stated his indication to drive and ah to and his drive to fight, saying he relishes this challenge as a manager.
00:01:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Some may find it perhaps rich to be proclaiming such crises, but the standard set at Manchester night at manchester City, sorry, at Man United would be a very different story.
00:01:29
Jack
won't be able to tell, would you?
00:01:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Three losses in a row is regular for them, but at Man City, the standards are completely different and the highest possibly of any football club in the world, give or take, maybe Real Madrid, by Munich.
00:01:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
But three defeats in a row is big news at this football club, and Pep will be doing everything in his power to rectify the situation.
00:01:49
Jack
Thank
00:01:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Currently, City are second in the Premier League with 23 points, only two away from Liverpool in first, and four clear of Forest. Yes, that's Nottingham Forest, in third. And until last week, it was a very good start to the season, despite the performances not being quite up there.
00:02:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
But three losses in a row, like I mentioned, 2-1 to Spurs, 2-0 to Bournemouth, and now 4-1 to Sporting, have imposed this maybe not-so-mini-crisis. But the potentially scary prospect is that there are many difficult games to come in the immediate future.
00:02:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spurs are next after this, who of course started this rot. Then Feyenoord of the Champions League, but then it's Liverpool at Anfield, then third place Forest, then away to Crystal Palace, who are normally a bogey team for City, before Juventus away, the Manchester derby, and then Aston Villa away.
00:02:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, it is massively important to rectify the rut here heading into that crucial period, otherwise it could potentially be be catastrophic for the season and especially the way Liverpool are ruthlessly dispatching teams at this present time and just to pile it on the injuries are stacking up as well Stones, Diaz, Grealish, Bob, Rodri all definitely out Kevin De Bruyne come on for the last five minutes against Sporting but we don't know how fit he is Savinho and Darko have both been injured or doubts over the last week or two as well, but hopefully Darko and Savino will be back.
00:02:49
Jack
Thank
00:03:09
Jack
you.
00:03:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, with the injuries, Jack, how do you see City lining up for this one, especially with how important a victory is?
00:03:17
Jack
um Well, just going off the off the the fixtures that you read out there, usually we'd be looking at that and licking our lips at the sound of United because United are definitely probably the easiest fixture in that list.
00:03:27
Jack
However, by the time we play them, they will have Reuben Amarim who has just handed us another L recently. So, exactly, yeah, that is not a nice fixture list whichever way you swing it, but you've got to play everyone over the course of the season twice and and we're we're always going to have tough Champions League fixtures.
00:03:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
the big as ofvals
00:03:46
Jack
So for the weekend, I feel like we're going to line up I want to say relatively similarly to how we did against Sporting.
00:03:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
the biggest of l's
00:03:55
Jack
Obviously, I'd say without Simpson Pusey ah right back, I don't think he'll get any minutes in this game. and I think we might see Walker return, but we're at a point now where both Walker and Rico Lewis, I think it's fair to say, he's had a bit of a dip in form.
00:04:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:04:12
Jack
So, ah right back, he might want to go with with pace and physicality. Walker got his first game back in, I think, 19 days against Bournemouth. We saw him get absolutely ripped to shreds by Semenyo and the rest of the Bournemouth team who were doubling up and targeting Kyle Walker.
00:04:28
Jack
Hopefully, it's a different case for him and hopefully he has a better game because I do think that he will probably start, especially since we're seeing Rico play a lot more minutes in the midfield.
00:04:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:04:39
Jack
Other than that, I don't see um a lot of changes happening. Maybe we'll see Gundogan not start over who. I'm not too sure.
00:04:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:04:49
Jack
If Docky's fit enough to start, then and he could maybe start a left-wing Nunes brought back into the centre of the midfield. That's
00:04:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We see Kevin De Bruyne rushed back with how everything's been going at the moment
00:05:01
Jack
probably what I don't want to happen because I was a bit frustrated with Pep bringing him on with 10 minutes to go after getting batted 4-1. I thought that that's not the game, not just because of the result and how it was going.
00:05:15
Jack
It's not like I thought he would only come on to turn it around. There was nothing that could have turned that result around. But I think the state of the game, the intensity that the game was was playing with going forward, even when Sporting were 4-1 up, we were still having to work a lot.
00:05:29
Jack
That's not the game that I wanted Pep Guardiola to bring back Kevin Yeah.
00:05:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
the moment.
00:05:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
that is what that Sorry to cut across, but I think that is why he will start, because I i don't so don't see why you'd have brought him on at all in in a game like that. It's such a risk. I think he just wanted to get him on the pitch because god said need him right now
00:05:47
Jack
That's a good point. It's either a big Pep Guardiola boo-boo or that is the reason that he
00:05:58
Jack
in which case i will be watching that game through gritty teeth because all it takes is one little wrong move and his hummy's gone again and then we're but we're back to square one
00:06:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
If he's out for the season like Rodri, just wanted to get him on the pitch because God said he need him right now. then then like expectations start to really change then, don't they?
00:06:15
Jack
i mean you look at how we've played without
00:06:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Expectations.
00:06:17
Jack
rodrie and i feel like there this's very few teams in football um the ah so drastically different when one player is out. But you take Kevin De Bruyne out of that as well and and our creativity drops to less than nothing.
00:06:31
Jack
We've seen Phil Foden operating a little bit more of a creative burden this season, which is nice to see. Although his shot numbers are ah coming down a little bit, and his is his creative numbers are still going up slightly, which is not what we usually associate Foden with.
00:06:47
Jack
He's obviously a high shot volume player.
00:06:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:06:50
Jack
He's now operating, I think, at the top of the table for expected assists per 90. So maybe we're seeing Phil Foden take up that mantle. But I think it's fair to say, maybe you'll agree, Jules,
00:07:02
Jack
he's not had the best start at fell forward
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
i i think he's I think he's been really poor, in the Premier League at least. and He's only scored he scored in three consecutive Champions League games, but they are the only games he's scored in this season. Doesn't seem like he's fully sharp in the Premier League yet.
00:07:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe it's because, and I've mentioned this on the pod before, all the chopping and changing midfield behind him. It's hard to get that rhythm. And any team in the world loses their two best players, they're going to have a drop-off in quality.
00:07:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's as simple as that. Rodri and KDB are the two best players and in in the team, if not the world. Let's be honest. If you lose two players like that, of course it's going to affect the team and the players around it.
00:07:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And City still managed to win nearly every game until this week. So, i've you know, and it does seem like a crisis, but if anyone can turn it around, it's Pep and City, absolutely.
00:07:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:07:51
Jack
I think there's actually, sorry, sorry to interrupt, but I do think there's actually some respite in this week of results in that you look at it and we've taken three different losses in three different competitions, which means when you take a step back, the dint in our progress for those competitions is very minimal.
00:08:11
Jack
Of course, we're out of the Carabao Cup. I don't think any City fan is particularly upset with that. I don't think any of us at the start of the season, even before the Rodri injury, just due to the size of our squad before that, thought we were going to go deep in all four cups.
00:08:24
Jack
it's not going to be a formidable season. So I think that we're okay we're out of that Cup. And if you take a look outside of that, one loss in the Champions League, one loss in the Premier League, like you said, with two points off the leaders, still four points clear at Forest and Arsenal, it's not the end of the world.
00:08:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:08:39
Jack
But it is a bad ditch to be in because this is where you can start snowballing as a team.
00:08:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, especially with the fixtures come in
00:08:46
Jack
And exactly, yeah, you can get a lot worse. So at the moment, it's not call for crisis. Of course, three losses in in isolation in a Pep team is unheard of.
00:09:01
Jack
But it's not the end of the world. However, it could become very bad it could go from but to worse is what we're thinking at the moment
00:09:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, um and just the fixtures coming.
00:09:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
one more thing on City in this segment. Erling Haaland always looks... His performances always look worse when City aren't playing well. But we need we need to not forget that he still has 11 goals in in just the Premier League this season.
00:09:27
Jack
very bad. It could go from bad to worse, is what we're thinking at the moment. Yeah.
00:09:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's more goals than games. The big issue for me is that the next highest scorer after him is Gvardiol and Kovacic with three each. Then there's only one other player that scored more than one and that's Stones, who's been pretty poor uninjured other than the goals he scored.
00:09:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then only two other goal scorers in total doku and kdb got one each so surely the other attacking players need to start contributing more in the final third right
00:09:49
Jack
Yeah Absolutely. I feel like we've got two wingers who are absolutely amazing and absolutely frustrating to watch. Doku and Savio, you can tell there's so much talent in either of those players.
00:10:04
Jack
And we see them, they've got capability to beat a man. Their final delivery is sometimes great, sometimes awful. But what has really frustrated most City fans, particularly with Doku, because we've seen him last season as well, is the consistency in which he's finishing his chances.
00:10:21
Jack
Sometimes it's a rocket, like we've seen this season, into the back of the net from from distance. And then other times he's fluffing his lines and doing too much. So we've not got that Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling wing duo that are going to score 20 goals a season each.
00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:10:35
Jack
We've not got a figure like Mohamed Salah or Eden Hazard who can play in that inside forward role. It really is Erling Haaland or Bust. And teams have started to figure out if you double, triple up, quadruple up on Erling Haaland or take the wingers out of the game so there's not much supply to him, then we struggle.
00:10:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:10:54
Jack
We struggle to break teams down.
00:10:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and I think the wingers are also missing that quality in the middle as well, aren't they? Because since Rodri and KDB have not been in the team a lot this season, season the wingers are getting the ball more they're getting the ball a lot more and they're getting the ball deeper normally as well so they've got more to do with less options in the middle if they don't find harland where the goal is coming from so yes i totally agree and well i brought it up that they need more output they're both still young but now is the time to step up second second season for docu as well he's had a year and a half now so i think he needs to start kicking on he's looked really sharp since he's come back from injury so this might be it but yeah now is the time if he if he wants to carve out a piece of city history for himself then i think he needs to start now savinho a little bit more time i am oh and'll do for part one.
00:11:07
Jack
Yeah.
00:11:23
Jack
Exactly. Absolutely.
00:11:30
Jack
Yeah.
00:11:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll have a look at Brighton specifically and the
00:12:08
Jack
you
00:12:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
hello and welcome back to daily manchester city podcast on the Global Sports Podcast Network. We're here today doing another Friday forecast. We've looked at City's past week, but now we're going to look ahead to City playing at 5.30 on Saturday at the Amex against Brighton.
00:12:28
Jack
Thank you.
00:12:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not a team that you really want to face when you're in dire need of a result, But history says that City, like facing Brighton, all-time City have won 21, drawn five and lost six of the 32 games played.
00:12:41
Jack
All right.
00:12:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
But in the Premier League, it's a lot better. Played 14, won 12, drawn one, lost one, scored 40, conceded nine. That it makes a lot better reading, including a 4-0 result this game last season with KDB getting one, Foden two and Alvarez getting the fourth.
00:13:08
Jack
Thank
00:13:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, it feels like it might be a little bit different this time around. Brighton, ah ah currently eighth with 16 points, only three away from Forrest in third, but also only one away from Newcastle in 11th in a very tight top half this season in the Premier League.
00:13:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've only lost twice, away to Chelsea and away to Liverpool, which is good signs for them too. They've beaten Everton, United, Spurs from 2-0 down, um one away at Newcastle, drawn away to Arsenal, drawn at home to Forest to a third, and then two poor results drawn with Ipswich and Wolves.
00:13:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
But in general, new manager Fabian Herzler has done an excellent job, in my opinion. It was a risk to hire him, um especially with the swelling of popularity the predecessor Roberto de Zerbi had.
00:13:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
But in true Brighton fashion, they seem to have unearthed another gem. I really like Herzler. He's only 31. He's had no top division experience. Yes, he got St.
00:14:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Pauli promoted last season, but maybe it dispels the the myth that you've got to have Premier League experience to be successful in this division because if you're good enough, you're good enough and everyone needs to start somewhere.
00:14:07
Jack
Okay.
00:14:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he's playing good football. That high line seemed like suicide at the start of the season, but he's adapted. They ground out a 1-0 win at St. James' Park, putting men behind the ball, so it shows he's flexible.
00:14:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And I'm sure the attack in football was one of, if not the most important decision for who to appoint for the hierarchy at Brighton.
00:14:28
Jack
Thank
00:14:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Being able to implement that is another story entirely, but he seems to have done so, so far. They've got good players, established players like Captain Dunk, Mitoma, and they've got a bunch of young players like Baleba, Minta and C.
00:14:48
Jack
you.
00:14:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Ferguson are only 20. Verbuggan and Ruta, who look like quality players, are only 22 as well. So, with all that in mind, Jack, where do you see the threats coming from Brighton
00:15:03
Jack
um Well, you you touched upon it beautifully there. If there's one one team, one fan base, one set of fans that should never worry about what's happening to their club, it's Brighton. Because as long as Tony Bloom still has power, still has authority, still in charge of the decisions and the scouting problems and and the way that the club is run, there's nothing to worry about if you're a Brighton fan.
00:15:25
Jack
The club is run so well and and and how they bring in talent and not only talent, but coaches and staff all through the club is is fantastic and and something that every other team in the Premier League should take note of.
00:15:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
and how do you feel about them as a team?
00:15:39
Jack
I mean, how many times have they brought these relatively unknown players from South America and and places in Europe and turned them into ยฃ100 million signings for the Premier League?
00:15:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:15:49
Jack
I mean, it's it's something to kind of marvel at. In terms of players, there's so many players that they've got that can cause problems. It's like, where do you even start? Of course, I'm not too sure on the fitness of Jao Pedro, and but Caro Matoma, although he's had a bit of a tougher time this season and a bit of a quieter season last, he's still that same player who kind of lit the Premier League.
00:16:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
you.
00:16:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
it always looks dangerous doesn't it
00:16:12
Jack
Always looks dangerous. Great on the ball. Fantastic. Yacoubi Minter, who they've they've got for... I don't know whether they got him in a loan or a cheap purchase deal from Newcastle because of their FFP.
00:16:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Still always looks dangerous, doesn't he?
00:16:24
Jack
Yeah,
00:16:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they bought him, and I think they spent nearly thirty mill by the way
00:16:28
Jack
but I do think that he was, that Newcastle were wanting more than double that for Mincer, but were forced into selling him because of FFP issues.
00:16:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:16:37
Jack
That's a fantastic deal. He's a brilliant, brilliant player. We've seen glimpses from him this season. and Nothing consistently enough, but it's Manchester City. So if there's ever a time where a player is going to show one of his few and far between glimpses, it's against us.
00:16:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
they spent nearly 30 mil, by the way. Yeah.
00:16:52
Jack
So I'm likely expecting him to have a good game. i One player who's been in absolutely fantastic form at the moment is Jorginho Rutter. I mean, everyone kind of was, I think it's fair to say, putting question marks over that signing from Leeds.
00:17:08
Jack
You'll probably know the number.
00:17:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:17:09
Jack
Was it something like 40 odd million?
00:17:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
um yeah a little little bit less
00:17:12
Jack
ah Yeah. and Bit of a big name transfer, bit of a controversial transfer from Leeds fans' point of view, but he's absolutely kicked on.
00:17:23
Jack
And at the start start of the season he was assisting a lot of goals now he's started scoring goals and he's also kind of having a great time playing against Premier League defenders which is what I've noticed from watching him he really enjoys playing against the physical defenders and and if there's one thing that we have got without or going without at the moment now that Ruben Diaz is out is that physicality in the back line.
00:17:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
um yeah a little bit less
00:17:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:17:44
Jack
We've got a little bit of a soft blush in the back line. Maybe Akanji can come back.
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:49
Jack
He didn't look to me fully fit in that game against Sporting but if he can come back relatively fit um and and and come back and have a good game then maybe we've got some hope.
00:17:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:17:59
Jack
and But Balaba as well, another fantastic young player who every time I watch him, he's fantastic. And that's not to mention a player who dunked on us in the last game of the season a couple of years ago, Julio and Ciso.
00:18:12
Jack
He scored that
00:18:16
Jack
surprises if he had a fantastic game against those
00:18:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
you mentioned that they're not in trouble and that every club is envious of the way that Brighton does their business. They're not only envious, they've tried to imitate it and failed. Loads of the top 10, say top 10 clubs in the Premier League have been stealing backroom staff from Brighton for the last few years.
00:18:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chelsea took them all and they're only now a few years on seeing the of that, which I think they...
00:18:40
Jack
yeah
00:18:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
but But they are seeing the results of that, right? but So, yeah, Brighton have really shook up the football world, to be quite honest.
00:18:48
Jack
Exactly.
00:18:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
From from the moment they got rid of Chris Hootan after he kept them in the Premier League and they signed Graham Potter from Swansea, there it was a risk, but it it showed that they tried to evolve and it and it worked, you know?
00:19:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because now look at that. Obviously, it's not all about Graham Potter, but I think he'd have probably got there thereabouts if he had had longer because you they were like fourth or fifth when he when he did leave for Chelsea. Of course, it went wrong.
00:19:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, Brighton, um everyone likes Brighton. But hopefully, hopefully.
00:19:21
Jack
Yeah. I won't play Brighton then
00:19:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah. but Hopefully City fans will like them a little bit more come Saturday. and ah Also, we haven't mentioned that guy Welms, who's having the best season of his life at age 34.
00:19:33
Jack
ah until they play Brighton. I'm trying not yeah it would be great to avoid mentioning him because i feel like he's the name where you you say the name in that it he's scoring against yeah and
00:19:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:44
Jack
eighty four just been a stalwart premier leaguer cat i feel like danny welbeck is who troy deney thought he was ah feel like
00:19:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
But then, in fact, I can't believe I'm about to defend Troy Deeney live. Welbeck has never got more than the six goals that he's got this season.
00:20:01
Jack
oh ri
00:20:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Troy Deeney has, I think, nearly every season had more than that.
00:20:06
Jack
i actually
00:20:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welbeck gives you a lot more.
00:20:07
Jack
don't know. Yeah. I feel like that's such a weird thing that you always think that Welbeck has scored more than six from your goals in a season, but never has. That's crazy. and Yeah. Yeah.
00:20:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know that, but just to be fair.
00:20:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah He's normally in and out of the team, really. like Everywhere he's been, United, Arsenal, he's never been the 38-game season guy. At Brighton, he might have been, but then you had Evan Ferguson come and he had more injury problems.
00:20:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's one of them, I think. But yeah. um When we come back from this short ad break, we'll look at some of the other fixtures from city's rivals this weekend
00:21:08
Jack
Thank
00:21:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
from City's
00:21:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
hello and welcome back to the daily manchester city podcast on a global sports podcast network we've um looked at cities week and City's week to come with Brighton on Saturday and now we're going to touch upon some of the other fixtures in the Premier League and that might catch the eye.
00:21:26
Jack
you.
00:21:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
So last week we ended up spending 20 minutes on this and it turned into three quarters of an hour episode so I think we'll go a little bit quicker with the fixtures this week and I'll just run from the top.
00:21:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we have Wolves v Southampton. That is a massive game at the bottom of the table.
00:21:43
Jack
Yeah.
00:21:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think if both teams draw, then it's still very early doors, I know. But both, well, I'll say it like this. Both teams absolutely will be desperate for their first win of the season here, Jack.
00:21:56
Jack
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, yeah you look...
00:21:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, sorry, Southampton just had their
00:21:58
Jack
I was just going to say, yeah, did yeah they they did have their first win. And that's huge for them mentally as well because, you know, they'll want to keep on keeping on and kick on from that.
00:22:09
Jack
and Obviously, they've had the great news this week that Taylor Bellis has had a surprise England call-up, his first ever. and So, thats that's great news for the team and for the camp. And hopefully, it'll instil a bit more confidence confidence in them but Southampton really need to start getting some points pretty or not it just has to start coming for them and Wolves the same I mean I'm surprised at how poor Wolves have been doing this season because when we played them they were pretty good I think you'll agree they were really really decent and and and not the team that the table suggests so it's going's going to be an interesting game for them.
00:22:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
first, didn't they? But still, yeah.
00:22:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Sorry,
00:22:43
Jack
Is it outside at St Mary's?
00:22:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:45
Jack
Molyneux.
00:22:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
it is at Molyneux.
00:22:49
Jack
Okay, well, I'd expect a Wolves win then in that case.
00:22:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Other
00:22:53
Jack
But, yeah, I think both teams need something out of that game.
00:22:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
than the Chelsea game where Maduweke scored a hat-trick, I think Wolves have been in every game.
00:22:57
Jack
Yeah.
00:23:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've not got any results from it, but they've been good for periods of time and bad decisions, bad decision-making, poor finishing, classic Wolves story, really.
00:23:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
But they've had a hard run of fixtures as well. I think this is when it starts to get a bit more favourable for them. So, yeah, they need to start putting points on the board ASAP.
00:23:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. Next, we have West Ham versus Everton.
00:23:26
Jack
Yes.
00:23:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
West Ham not doing as well as perhaps many people, myself included, and Keelan, I know for sure, fancied them to do this year.
00:23:34
Jack
I think everyone on City, City Daily, thought that we were going to do well.
00:23:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:38
Jack
Remember, in the start of the season, all our Premier League awards, like most underrated player and and dark horses were at West Ham.
00:23:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:23:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah and it's not worked out. Five losses from 10 games. Yes, it's a new manager with a very different style to David Moyes previously, but it doesn't look good at times, does it? And Everton are not a team you want to play
00:24:02
Jack
Yeah, I mean, they're both doing pretty poorly by their standards this season. Everton slowly starting to look a little bit more like a cohesive team, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin time and time again, this is season on season now.
00:24:18
Jack
He's kind of near the top of the table for big chances missed and he's just not that clinical striker.
00:24:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
when you're not at your best because they will get in your face yeah
00:24:24
Jack
I think he's third highest underperformer of XG this season. and So, he's not working for Everton. They've got Beto as well who can't hit a barn door from...
00:24:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. They scored two over the last few weeks, to be fair. So maybe maybe they need to give him the start over Calvert-Lewin, to be fair, because Calvert-Lewin every week seems like he's missing chances.
00:24:44
Jack
Yeah.
00:24:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
At least at least he still looks confident. Do you know what I mean? Like he's not given up yet. and on it He's not the type of guy to will give up a thing.
00:24:53
Jack
Well, I do know that a lot of Everton fans that I speak to anyway much prefer Calvert-Lewin to Beto. They really just don't see any quality in Beto, which is just a shame because you saw how he played in Italy.
00:25:05
Jack
I think it was for Udinese. And the play style that he had in Italy is so completely different to the Premier League. Moise, Sean Dyche is using him as like a target man just because he's really tall.
00:25:18
Jack
But he was actually one to kind of run him behind and chase long balls and he's deceptively quick.
00:25:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:25:24
Jack
That's not what Everton are playing like at all and and it's just not working for him and it's not really working for Dominic Calvert-Lewin as much this this season. So that game is the kind of, the the game of underperformers, ad set
00:25:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I feel like that's goingnna it's going to be a stinky 0-0 or like a 4-0, isn't it? Do you know what I mean?
00:25:43
Jack
be yeah
00:25:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, big game for both teams there. Brentford versus Bournemouth. Next up, Brentford lost the table.
00:25:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brentford are currently in 12th. I think they had a better start. then they've ah They've won two of the last four, lost the other two. So I think it's classic Brentford, to be fair. On their day, they're very good.
00:26:06
Jack
I'd say.
00:26:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
At other times, you can get at them. you You can make them make mistakes. But you know what you're going to get from them. They're goingnna they're going to press high. They're going to try and get the ball into the two strikers.
00:26:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And if Mbwemo or Vissa are on their day then they're a match for anyone
00:26:22
Jack
Yeah, Yeah. you know, we we go from the last game, which I would say is the game of the underperforming teams, to this one, I'd say, is the game of the overperforming teams. Maybe it's fair unfair to say that about Brentford, but I don't think anyone really particularly expected Bournemouth to be doing this well this season.
00:26:38
Jack
But it's not just the results that they're getting. Both teams are playing really nice football. We've seen Brentford, who've kind of been infamous this season for scoring within the first five minutes.
00:26:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
their day, then they're a match for anyone.
00:26:48
Jack
Bournemouth as well, kind of doing really well. So I actually don't know what to expect from this game. One thing I will say is I'm not as confident in Bournemouth away from home as I am at the Vitality Stadium.
00:27:00
Jack
I've talked about that stadium, how tough it is to play there. That's going to have a massive effect. so Doing it at the Brentford Stadium is going to be completely, I'd say, a game-changer.
00:27:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:27:11
Jack
and I can see only a Brentford win from that game.
00:27:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. Bournemouth not lost in their last ah three games, and that's a win over Arsenal, a win over a City, and a draw at Villa. So in good form, but yeah, they're definitely a different prospect away as Brentford are at home as well.
00:27:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
So next we have Crystal Palace at home to Fulham. Crystal Palace look like they've turned a corner over the last week or so, um getting a draw and a win of the last two. They're now out of the relegation zone as well.
00:27:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
no one No one had them struggling as much as they have, but of course losing someone like Michael Alise, where all your creativity comes from, can do that.
00:27:47
Jack
Thank you.
00:27:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Glasner, is he the right guy to turn it around for you? And what have Palace got in the locker for Fulham, who I know you rate very highly?
00:27:55
Jack
ah
00:27:57
Jack
ah You know what? i'm um I'm very much willing to go back and say that I was completely wrong because even before when I said that Fulham were not going to do as well this season, I should have known that the quality in that team was still good enough and Marco Silva is the key difference maker.
00:28:12
Jack
and Although I am a big fan of Glasner, I don't know necessarily if I've bought into as much hype as he had towards as the latter end of last season. He was doing fantastic, but I think this season he has struggled and I don't think that's the the kind of the the end of it.
00:28:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:28:29
Jack
I think he will turn it around, but I do think Marco Silva is a better manager and I can see Fulham nicking something away. However, having said that, Selhurst Park is a pretty horrible place to go for any team.
00:28:40
Jack
and So I really don't know what to expect from this one. I could see a a high-scoring draw.
00:28:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right.
00:28:45
Jack
I could see a Fulham win. Or I could see Crystal Palace blowing them away. I really don't know.
00:28:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think um about both sides. I think recruitment was probably the the main talking point for both. and Palace didn't didn't replace Alise with enough quality, hence whether they're in the position they are now.
00:28:57
Jack
Yeah.
00:29:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Fulham, to defend you slightly, there was a lot of risk involved with the new sign-ins with Fulham. Smith Rowe, who I think has been excellent, there's no guarantee he would have been fit to do that.
00:29:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wobbe's turned into into the main guy there as well. Raul Jimenez has become the old Raul Jimenez. So there's a lot of intangibles that were risky or not guaranteed there.
00:29:26
Jack
Okay.
00:29:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that a lot of it's, well, they've been poor the last few weeks, but before that they were you know sniffing Europe. And i think I think they'll be there or thereabouts top half come the end of the season.
00:29:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Marco Silva's done a great job there absolutely and next that we have brighton v city of course we've done that we but um i'll get jack to give a score prediction as well
00:29:46
Jack
Thank you.
00:29:52
Jack
Oh, you know what? Because we're being optimistic at the moment, I'm going to go for a close 2-1 win for City away from home. Get rid of this slump. Get out of it and just get back to winning in ways. That's all I can hope. We've talked about the game in detail, what's going to happen, ah who can threaten us. It's not going to be an easy fixture and I wouldn't be surprised if it went completely though the other way and went from bad to worse but I'm going to stay but ah optimistic and say a tight two one
00:30:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
on the crossover episode i pretty much echoed all the sentiments you said there, that I i don't see City keeping a clean sheet. Only two in the Premier League this year so far. Brighton are a team that know how to score goals, let me tell you that.
00:30:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let me tell you, Jack. So and I said a City win as well. Way more confident than Lewis, who predicted a draw, by the way.
00:30:43
Jack
but
00:30:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
But um yeah, I think 3-2, narrow win to City, slump over.
00:30:46
Jack
2-1 win.
00:30:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's move on. Anyway, after that, we have Liverpool at home to Aston Villa in what is one of the games of the weekend. Liverpool are absolutely flying at the moment under Arnish slot.
00:30:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Diaz is scoring for fun. Salah's running the show. They look amazing, don't they, Jack? And Villa, I know they lost they just lost to Club Bruges, but Champions League away days are always going to throw up a result like that.
00:31:06
Jack
you
00:31:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've started the Champions League fantastically other than that. This is two of the best teams, if not in the country, in europe at the moment i
00:31:19
Jack
Yeah, absolutely. and And one thing I will say is I don't think anyone expected Villa to be doing as well as they have been doing it in the Champions League. I feel like when people were talking about Villa at the start of the season, they used the Champions League to kind of back up their point that Villa were going to suffer this season.
00:31:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Europe at the moment, Jack. yeah i i did that i did that yeah
00:31:35
Jack
a Yeah, and and I think it's come to a shock for everyone, really. One thing I will say about this fixture, particularly though, eight o'clock on a Saturday night at Anfield, that does not favour Aston Villa whatsoever.
00:31:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:31:50
Jack
Those late games in the winter at Anfield, it's cold by by the coast, you know, in Liverpool by the docks and stuff like that. It's horrible for them. and So I can only see this going one way.
00:32:01
Jack
I know Liverpool got beat at home by Forest. I feel like that will probably be looked at as a kind of anomaly ah over the course of the rest of the season.
00:32:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:32:09
Jack
So I can only predict ah maybe a 3-1 win is what I'm going to go for.
00:32:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah i think i think i act i yeah Yeah, I think I reciprocate that. And we say they lost to Forrest. Forrest have done better than Villa in the Premier League this year. That's facts. So they that's ah it doesn't look anywhere near as bad a result now as it did at the time. And that is one of only two games Liverpool have not won in all competitions this year, I think. So yeah, they are absolutely flying. Hopefully Villa do City a favour, to be honest, and get a result there. But, yeah, I can't see it happening either. Move on to Sunday's games. Manchester United are at home to Leicester City, which is a repeat of the Carabao Cup fixture and last week, which was Ruud van der Strijd's first game as interim manager, which they won 5-2
00:33:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
you see anything different happen in your jack
00:33:04
Jack
um You know what? I'm going to be a bit of a bird. And although I was optimistic about the City result, I'm going to go back to my City fan and put my my blue tinted goggles on for one second.
00:33:16
Jack
And I'm going to say, I can see a Jamie Vardy brace here at Old Trafford and just a dagger in the heart of United fans who have been on a run of OK form of the new manager, one big win and then a draw away.
00:33:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
comfortably do you see anything different happening here jack Best result in United's recent history was City losing to Sporting, wasn't it?
00:33:30
Jack
So I'm going to go yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:33:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
so Yeah,
00:33:36
Jack
They were watching that game as if it was their own, yeah. I'm going to go with 2-2. Why not? 2-2 United. I can see that happening. I feel like United are always playing on a Sunday at 2pm at the moment.
00:33:48
Jack
It just feels like that's the...
00:33:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah it's it's because they're in the thursday they play thursday in europe in ah
00:33:52
Jack
Yeah, of course. Oh, what an eye. Anyway. I'm going to go with 2-2 United Leicester because why not? Why not? I'd love to see that happen.
00:34:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah. It's because they play Thursday in Europe. Well, if Leicester are within one goal and Jordan Ayew is on the pitch, then they need to be scared because that bloke lives for the 90-plus minute impressed me a lot this season, to be honest.
00:34:11
Jack
flick from Jamie Vardy for his goal at the weekend, it was unbelievable.
00:34:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
i i I didn't think he'd be... I didn't think he'd still be at this level because I watched him a few times in the championship last year and I thought oh boy Jamie's legs are gone a bit yeah but I think he knows his limitations well and for all intents and purposes sorry Jack um he trains a lot better than he did when when he was on top of the world as a lot of his players say he takes it a lot more seriously now and he and he must do it to still be in his mid-30s banging them in in the Premier League.
00:34:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, fair play to Vardy and a big shout out to Jordan Ayew anytime I get the chance as well. um the other There's two other games. It's 2 o'clock on Sunday and the first is Forrest at home to Newcastle.
00:34:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
The Chris Wood derby. The Elliot Anderson derby. But yeah, talking about Forrest, we've got to start with Chris Wood, right?
00:35:05
Jack
Yeah, or the Matt Sells derby, if you will.
00:35:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
if If no one has ever said that, other than Matt Sells' family.
00:35:13
Jack
And it's funny because all of those players that we mentioned, well, maybe not Elliot Edmonton, but Chris Wood and Matt Sells, who were really quite poor at Newcastle, doing fantastically at Forest.
00:35:24
Jack
It's it's really cool to see. This is an interesting one because Newcastle, of course, just off the back of a pretty huge win for not only their confidence, but for the title race in general.
00:35:34
Jack
1-0 at home against Arsenal. Early kick-off was horrible. It's a different story, though, because Newcastle are on the road and they're at the Forest ground on Sunday. It's going to be tough for them. um I can't really see them taking all of that form into this weekend against Forest.
00:35:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:35:51
Jack
and The way that they're playing, the way that Nuno has got them playing despite, I think he had a three-match ban, won all of those games.
00:35:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah ah believe so.
00:35:59
Jack
That's crazy to me. So I can see him. Am I right in saying he's back on the sidelines for this game? Yeah, so I can see only a Forest win here. I'm going to go with, I'm going to go with 3-0 actually.
00:36:10
Jack
I'm quite confident in Forest.
00:36:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just because of the way football is, now he's back on the touchline, they're going to lose.
00:36:17
Jack
Oh
00:36:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're going to lose. So i i oh I don't think they'll actually will lose, but I think it might be a one-all draw. I think it's going to be a tight game. the The longer Forest stay in the upper echelons of the division, the less teams that are going to treat them as if they are the relegation fodder.
00:36:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that comes with more expectation, especially at home.
00:36:34
Jack
yeah
00:36:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I don't think Forest are the type of team that you you know can dominate the ball and dominate games like that. I think they thrive off teams coming onto them. So it's it's always tricky to be one of the lower teams up there.
00:36:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Remember Leicester, they faced the same thing but managed to fight through it.
00:36:50
Jack
yeah.
00:36:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the season after, for and you know just as an example, ah when you're suited best to attacking in the space but you get all the ball, sometimes players don't know what to do with it. But if you feed Chris Wood, he is going to score.
00:37:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely.
00:37:07
Jack
but buy
00:37:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Next up, we have Spurs at home to Ipswich Town. Spurs, I just can't get a handle on them this year, man. I i always feel like they're turning a corner and and they're going to ignite and then and it all goes then it all goes messed up like bottling it against Brighton.
00:37:25
Jack
Yeah.
00:37:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd expect i' expect them to comfortably win this game of course because Ipswich's season has not really got off the ground at all.
00:37:27
Jack
I mean...
00:37:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
They look like they've threatened to win games. In fact, they've threatened to win five of them, getting five draws from ten so far. But they've lost the other five and it does seem like they have a lack of quality at times, Jack
00:37:40
Jack
Yeah.
00:37:44
Jack
Yeah. i mean as we're recording this spurs are just about to play their europa league fixture later on against galosaserine they've rested some key players so it does feel like that that put in all of their eggs in the basket of the Premier League and trying to build up that form.
00:37:59
Jack
um I've been a massive fan of Ange Postacoglu since he's come in, but it's just not been consistent. I don't think anyone can put ah a finger on where they are at the moment. However, I can see them winning this game.
00:38:12
Jack
But what does worry me is they play a dangerously high kind of suicide line and they're against a team which I really, really rate at playing against a high line because you've seen at the start of the season, Ipswich was so dangerous in getting that ball over the top.
00:38:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:38:28
Jack
You've got players like Liam DeLapp, Leif Davis attacking and Sam Smodiacs, who was the championship top scorer last season. So I feel like on the break, they can really, really hurt Spurs and And Spurs, if any team in the Premier League, are probably next to us in that they're one of the most vulnerable of the top teams at the back.
00:38:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to go
00:38:50
Jack
So I can see this being a high-scoring game, to be honest with you, but I think Spurs will probably just have enough quality and to beat them. I'm going to go 4-
00:38:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah why not ah think if spurs even half turn up they should have enough to get it done, really, shouldn't they?
00:39:00
Jack
i
00:39:04
Jack
yeah
00:39:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Especially the form that Brennan Johnson and Solanke are finding themselves in as well. They've got goals gotckol everywhere. But if they give Liam De Lappe much space to run in behind, he loves to attack it.
00:39:16
Jack
Why not?
00:39:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And shout out to him this season, too. He's taken to the Premier League like a duck to water. Fair play.
00:39:21
Jack
Yeah.
00:39:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
The daily Manchester City always going to have a lot of love for Liam De Laff.
00:39:25
Jack
Yeah. Always.
00:39:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think we've saved the best till last. I lied when I said we wouldn't reach 40 minutes. but we But we have to talk about Chelsea v Arsenal because a lot of people I've seen fancying Chelsea for this one.
00:39:40
Jack
You know what?
00:39:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
awesome know Arsenal need a result.
00:39:43
Jack
hey They do.
00:39:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Desperately. Desperately.
00:39:46
Jack
But I'm also in the same boat that I do fancy Chelsea for this one. Is this three losses on the bounce for Arsenal as well as us? They they ah lost against Bournemouth and I think they lost in the Champions League the last fixture.
00:39:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um um they ah you know They just lost to Inter Milan.
00:40:03
Jack
I could be wrong. Yes. Yeah, I see.
00:40:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
They lost to Newcastle.
00:40:06
Jack
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:40:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, they did beat Preston 3-0 in the Carabao Cup.
00:40:10
Jack
Well, that doesn't count, does it?
00:40:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Before that, they drew with Liverpool. Before that, they beat Shakhtar. But before that, they lost to Bournemouth. So, it's very spotty form. And the only wins there are home to Shakhtar and away to Prest
00:40:24
Jack
And not very convincingly against Shakhtar as well. So they're definitely in a bit of a bad form.
00:40:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:40:28
Jack
Of course, missing their talisman martin erdegard obviously a bit of a similar situation with o in rodrie
00:40:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
he and more more kaie b to be honest um because he he got few minutes um
00:40:34
Jack
however
00:40:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah when they were desperately Milan in the week but again they could they could put be pushing him through um quicker than quicker than they should because they are dying out for that quality in the middle sorry Jack
00:40:49
Jack
yeah
00:40:54
Jack
well we know better than anyone that playing into millan is absolutely gut- wrenchingly painful because they defend so well, whether you like it or not, that five of the bat,-bat, it's so solid. Probably the most five but most solid five-of-the-bat system in Europe, I'd say, is in Zaghi, is in Milan.

They were doubling, tripling up at Saka at times. And we've seen with Arsenal this season that if you can take Saka out of the game completely, Odegaard's not there, they have no outlet.
00:41:22
Jack
I mean, Havertz is just sometimes great, sometimes dreadful.
00:41:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:41:27
Jack
Martinelli really hasn't been on it the past season. And I think even last season, he was pretty poor by his standards. I know Arsenal fans have been frustrated with Trossard. So going into this game, I feel like if Chelsea can defend the set pieces well, and if there aren't that many set pieces conceded for Arsenal, then I think they will struggle.
00:41:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:41:48
Jack
And I am really, well, I don't know if I've been mega impressed with Chelsea this season, but they've been much better than they have in the recent years.
00:41:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:41:55
Jack
We've seen Chris Ado, who's turned into probably one of the better midfielders in the league this season. and exactly yeah yeah ah yeah I actually don't think that Palmer's been in his very best form recently this season.
00:42:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I only think he wasn't for a few months, to be honest. You know, the first few months he was at Chelsea, it was all going stinky. But I think since then he's been amazing as he has most his career
00:42:16
Jack
I don't think he's reached the heights that he did last season, but he's still on the pitch. He's still a threat. Rhys James has just played two back-to-back 90 minutes. That's unheard of. They will be they will be absolutely buzzing with that.
00:42:29
Jack
I can't see anything but a Chelsea win is that is that unfair to say
00:42:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
no no at all not with recent form it definitely looks like Arteta is feeling the pressure too um in the press conferences.
00:42:40
Jack
yeah
00:42:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
But i i have this I have this feeling like City that this is a big one. And I think if they don't get a result here, then, you know, same same as City at Brighton. You know, it turns a mini crisis into, God, where's the season going?
00:42:55
Jack
absolutely i'll be i'll be watching this game with very close eyes because this is a huge game for the title race. I think Liverpool fans will we'll all be eyes on this this game as well.
00:43:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if Chelsea win this game, that would take them... and Well, they're already above Arsenal, my bad, I think. um So would you then have Chelsea as more of a threat than Arsenal in the title race
00:43:12
Jack
Yes, don't know if I have them as more of a threat in the title race, given what we've seen last season.
00:43:24
Jack
I'd like to think that Arteta's got enough credit in the bank to be able to turn this around. However, it doesn't look good for Arsenal. If they're getting this Chelsea team and to to look better than them this season and to be in a better league position, it doesn't look good for them.
00:43:39
Jack
and I mean, you can't really fault Chelsea how they've done this season. 18 points, only one off Forest, which would put them in third.
00:43:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
that They've only lost twice title race. and that's to City and Liverpool.
00:43:47
Jack
Yeah. And and that that opening game day at Stamford Bridge was a bit of an anomaly because we played that game without Rodri and we were playing fantastically.
00:43:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
City haven't played that well again in the Premier League, to be honest.
00:43:59
Jack
i ah That's not a form we've seen since then. So maybe Chelsea are just going to kick on for the rest of the season now would and be right up there.
00:44:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they they do look really good, especially considering all the young talent. So, yeah, Mareska's done a good job of sorting the sorting the Deadwood out, picking the peer players he likes, and it seems like he's picked them well.
00:44:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, that that promises to be an absolute cracker on Sunday.
00:44:21
Jack
Yeah. I didn't give a score prediction. I'll go 1-0. I don't think it's going to be a mega high scoring game, but I think it's going to be a game that Chelsea probably see that op as well
00:44:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to go 2-2, and I think Chelsea will feel hard done by not to have won it. That's what I'm going to go with. Right, well, um after saying we're not going to get it to 45 minutes, that's exactly what we've done.
00:44:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
