Hello and welcome back to Daily Manchester City on the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Jules Jordan-Probet and I'm delighted to be joined by Lewis Royal. How are we Lewis?
00:00:23
Lewis
Yeah, not bad Jules, how are you mate?
00:00:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, good good. Happy to do a little bit more lighthearted one after analysing City losing the last couple of weeks. And also joined by Jack Ward.
00:00:33
Lewis
Yeah.
00:00:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
How are we Jack?
00:00:36
Jack
I'm good, thank you very much, Joel. How are you?
00:00:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I've just answered that, Jack.
00:00:40
Jack
Well, I like to make sure, you know what I mean? You've got a double chat.
00:00:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, i but I'm glad we got a team full of compassionate people on the pod today.
00:00:45
Jack
in case you're it has changed since the last two seconds.
00:00:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah as as I mentioned, today we're doing a Wildcard Wednesday, our favorite day of the week, something a bit more lighthearted and to try and take the focus away from what has been a very difficult last couple of weeks for City and City fans.
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
So what we're up to today is we are going to, well, I say we, Lewis and Jack, are each going to make a team, or 11, of City Academy graduates. And then I'm going to pick whose is the best at the end, because I love the power. therate The criteria for ah who can make it in the team is quite loose. We're playing quite loose with it. So we're basically saying anyone that has ever been in the City Academy No set amount of appearances, no set amount of time just to broaden our options ah significantly and make potentially make it a little bit more fun. So let's get straight into it. Jack, what's your back line and goalkeeper going to be?
00:01:52
Jack
Oh, well, you know what? I probably say that the backlining goalkeeper is what I've spent the most time on because I do think we've had quite a bit of talent in this backline that have come from our academy or at least made an appearance from our academy. Most prominently, I'd say the right back position is much like England's pretty stacked. So I'm going to start with the the goalkeeper, which for me, it it can only be one man, really. I'd love to say it was Joe Hart, but we signed him from Shrewsbury.
00:02:21
Jack
Um, didn't really make any, any appearances for, for us in the, in the youth set up. So there's one man that sticks out for me and that's Casper Schmeichel. And Casper, he joined the, the under 18s at the beginning of the Oh four, Oh five season. I think got promoted to the reserves a couple of years later and left on a loan sporadically each season until he left Man City in the summer of 2009. Spent a couple of years at Knox County and Leeds, uh, before cementing himself as a, as a kind of primarily great really.
00:02:49
Jack
at Leicester where we spent 10 years making 284 premier appearances and and making no mistake about it, he is a prem great. Whatever you want to say about him, he's absolutely up there. Won a historic Premier League title with, with Leicester and fun facts about Caspis Michael in my first ever Manchester City game, he was in my matchday program as the third choice keeper on that matchday. So big props to Caspis Michael. He'll always have a place in my heart when it comes to City for that.
00:03:16
Jack
and I think he's a great player so that's who I've got in net. Fullbacks, this is where I struggled because one side it's quite easy to fulfill yourself with options in the right back slot, left back not so easy.
00:03:29
Jack
and so i'll I'll start with left back because it's a more difficult position. I've gone with Angelino, spent five years at City, then a further two years and after that, two of them initially in the youth set up, went on to become a bit of a ah European journeyman, the Nicholas Anelka of left backs, if you will. And and he's not phenomenal. He's not the best player in the world. He certainly wasn't great at City. He had games where he showed that he could have been something, but quite poor defensively, but lacking a bit of options in that left back slot. Right back however, we're we're not sure, we're not sure. I wanted to go maybe a care and trip year, something like that. I've gone with Jeremy Frimpong. Now Jeremy joined City at the age of nine.
00:04:13
Jack
if you believe it. Spending nine years at the club when until he was 18 before leaving for Celtic in 2019, he's since become a part of history in German football with Bialavacuz and Javi Alonso.
00:04:17
Lewis
and
00:04:25
Jack
And to be honest with you, he's a player I'd love to see back in a blue shirt. Absolutely love to see him back at City, maybe under a different coach, a different style of play where we're playing maybe a three or five back with some attacking, you know, flanking full fullbacks. I think that's to a T. Maybe it's not so much in this pep system though, because he plays a bit more like a winger. Center backs, this is where I had the most fun really, because I reckon I've got two players here who maybe Lewis might not have. And one of them, I'm going to start out, and I'm going to defend him with
00:04:56
Jack
everything I've got, because Ben Me is my first choice tenderlock. And I absolutely love Ben Me. He's a man-clad, born in sale, came through cities, he used to set up, signed his first professional contract with the club in September 2007. He capped in the city team, that won the FA Cup, FA Youth Cup in 2007 and 2008. And since then, he's gone on to absolutely sell out his family career at Old Stanley and Brentford.
00:05:22
Jack
And I will argue the case that he's often been touted as one of the prime's most underrated players in his tenure. 272 premier appearances. And I just feel like he still doesn't get the credit he deserved. you and the The last couple of years at the back end of his time at Burnley, and the first couple of years at his time at Brentford, he was so good. So, so good. And still to this day, he's a really reliable center half. Next to him, I've kind of cheated because he did predominantly play most of his career at right back up.
00:05:50
Jack
He's capable of playing centre-half and we've seen him play a few games centre-half at City. And that is, of course, Big Meeks. Not my favourite pundit nowadays. I think he's kind of turned his back on the City fanbase in some way, but make no mistake about it, he made 245 appearances across all competitions in 10 seasons for Manchester City, winning a Premier League title and an FA Cup. He did burst onto the scene. What more can can you say about Big Meeks? It hasn't been said already. and Credit where he's due.
00:06:20
Jack
He was an absolutely fine right back and one of the better players thing when set up. So that's my back four. I've gone strong. I think it's all right.
00:06:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I love that Ben Meesh out. I think he's been quality for years. and We're going years back now, but in 2017, I was writing for this website and it was just, I think it was when Virgil van Dijk was about to leave Liverpool, about to join Liverpool, sorry.
00:06:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I wrote an article about why Ben Mee should be the guy to replace him. So I've done a top six team at the time. um And he doesn't seem, it's only the last year or two, he's really dropped off, isn't it? He's been a stellar centre back since.
00:06:55
Jack
yeah
00:06:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah, so ah nice nice nice one for Ben Mee.
00:07:01
Jack
and
00:07:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
That could help you in the final scores.
00:07:02
Jack
you know
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Lewis. What say you when you're back, back, backline and goalkeeper?
00:07:10
Lewis
Yeah so I'm in agreement with Jack for the goalkeeper, I don't think it can be anyone else really. There's Mureich for, recently he's known for Ipswich who has still got a big career ahead of him but for me it's Kasper Schmeichel in that. I mean Jack's already sang most of his praises, obviously son of Peter Schmeichel obviously had a short stint at the city but he's known for being a massive United fan and a massive United legend. Obviously, he's very annoying. But yeah, 107 appearances for his country, which which wasn't mentioned, I think. Obviously, he won the league with Lester in that. In the crazy season in 2016, I think it was, 2015-16. So yeah, he's definitely going in between the stakes for me. Moving on to left back, I was really stuck for choice.
00:07:57
Lewis
but I have gone with ah quite a young backline actually quite a backline for the future I've gone with Wilson Esbrand come from the City Academy he's not had many appearances for the first team but he has had two appearances in the Champions League and I think from what I've seen of him he does it like a like a good prospect and hopefully he'll get more more chance moving forward into the future I'll go to right back next and do the fullbacks first it was between Three for me. It was between Big Meeks at right back. Kieran Trippier and Rico Lewis, and I've actually gone with Rico Lewis, so I've stuck him in. I think that the ceiling's so high for him, ah such a young lad still at 19 years of age. I think that the amount of time, the amount of Premier League first team minutes he's getting at the minute under Pep is only going to make him an amazing player. And even when Pep leaves, I'm sure he'll still be getting a lot of first team action. And I think obviously Trippier's had an amazing career,
00:08:55
Lewis
He's been a fantastic footballer, but I do think the season is probably higher for Eko Lewis in my opinion. um Moving to centre back, there was a lot. there was There was so many to pick. A lot of young lads, a few retired lads, but my first centre back is actually going to be Howard Bellis.
00:09:12
Lewis
Recently signed for Southampton for, I think, around 19-20 million um last year. He's just recently got his first England call-up, I think, a couple of days ago. Obviously, with there being a lot of injuries, Tujal has added a lot of a lot of more young players. I'm excited to see him get that opportunity for England and see see what he can do on the big stage. I saw his interview. He was very happy about it, very down to earth.
00:09:38
Lewis
ah My other centre back is actually quite a rogue shout. I've actually gone with Eric Garcia next to him, who is currently a Barcelona. Yeah, I can see your face, Jack. He's currently a Barcelona. he He didn't have the best spell at City, but um I was really struggling for what I was putting in. You know, I was debating Nederman, they were deadripped by that. I got really close for him. Actually, I nearly put him in, but I've just ah i've changed last minute. And another one I got really close to me was, was Tocin Adarabayo, who's obviously playing at Chelsea at the minute. But I've gone with Eric Garci. Yeah. For some reason, I can't actually think of any reasons, any more reasons why I've put him in. But yeah, that is a, that that finishes off my, my goalkeeper and botline.
00:10:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I love that Garcia has made two 11s in consecutive weeks.
00:10:27
Jack
yeah
00:10:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Last week it was for worst ever city signings.
00:10:32
Jack
but you you with asking today yeah I mean he came from Barca and then we gave him back to Barca he somehow still we got a transfer value of around 20 million euros
00:10:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, Barcelona wanted him, right?
00:10:32
Lewis
Exactly. exactly
00:10:45
Jack
God knows how. and But yeah, I'm sorry Lewis, but he did feature in my worst ever City Player 11 last Wild Card Wednesday. So I wanted to stare away from him. Oh, and just by the way, I have to get my obligatory mentioning every time Taylor Bellis gets mentioned that I did go to school with him, just in case you didn't know. I'm going to keep telling you that every time his name gets mentioned.
00:11:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not totally fair enough. and With that Eric Garcia shout, I think you're thinking of balancing a team, right? You know, this is the only left-footed center back we've mentioned so far. So, you know, that might come for something at the end.
00:11:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who knows?
00:11:20
Jack
Yeah.
00:11:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah That'll do for part one. When we come back, we'll get to the more exciting positions West Cities Academy has been stacked over the years.
00:11:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Manchester City Podcast. We're here for another Wildcard Wednesday, making our best City Academy graduate 11. Academy graduate being used loose there. But players that have been in City's academy at one point or another, we've gone through the goalkeeper in defence. I'm going to come to you next, Lewis. Tell us, what's your midfield looking like?
00:12:22
Lewis
So obviously we're going with a 4-3-3 formation. So I've got two eights, so two holders. I'm not going with one CDM, which is what city you're playing at the minute. And then a cam. So my first centimetre is and Chelsea's new midfield, Romeo Lavia. I think he definitely deserves to be in this team. Obviously going to Southampton straight after leaving City. And still only 20 years of age he he started.
00:12:49
Lewis
quite a few games this season and when I've watched him I'm really impressed with him, his ability on the ball, his composure on the ball, dropping in, getting on it and he's also, he's he's a boxer, a boxer midfielder as well as sitting deep and I really like the look of him.
00:13:02
Jack
Thank you.
00:13:02
Lewis
My other centimetre, it's really tough. A special mention to Michael Johnson obviously with what happened with him and then It was a big decision and I think I'm going to go with, for a bit of gritting the team, I'll stick Joey Barton in there.
00:13:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh!
00:13:20
Lewis
and Obviously, it helps us a tactically getting sent off when he when we're playing QPI. Obviously, you tactically kick people out.
00:13:27
Jack
That's
00:13:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's the best thing he ever did for City!
00:13:31
Jack
all.
00:13:31
Lewis
And well and ah we need a bit of fighting in this field. We can't just have a completely young team. We need a bit of gritting determination and a bit of you know, giving it to the to the opposition and and and making him annoyed. Tommy Doyle, special shout out to him, just just missing out. I do think he's still got a good career ahead of him, obviously at Wolves now. But in calm, now for me, this was really hard. We've got the likes of Morgan Rogers, who came from the Academy, Steven Ireland, can't forget the Superman, James McATEE, but for me, I've gone with Brahim Diaz in the center attacking me field position, I think.
00:14:08
Lewis
Obviously ah AC Milan, Real Madrid, I think he's he's been fantastic. He was always the next big thing at City. Everyone was always talking about him. He was all the talk five, 10 years ago or however long ago it was. But I do think that his ability is is second to none. I think he's a a fantastic player. So yeah, thought that completes my midfield three.
00:14:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, I'll call him a lot. He likes Diaz.
00:14:33
Jack
yeah
00:14:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's, uh, that's good enough for me. And yeah, just on Latvia. Yeah. He's going to be one of the best midfielders in the world for the next 10 years, in my opinion. He looks like he's got it all. Jack, what's your midfield looking like?
00:14:45
Jack
um Well, to be honest with you, I think I did really want to put Labia in this midfield because I do think he's probably the best defensive-minded midfield prospect that that we've produced or that has played a part in our academy.
00:14:57
Jack
and Having said that, because he missed pretty much 90% of the season last year and I've not watched as much of him this year, the games I have watched of him this season, he's been unbelievable. He's really, really impressed me. But because I'm not seeing so much of him, I've left him out of this for the time being. I also did want to put Brian Diaz in my midfield, but as you'll come to find out, there would be absolutely no balancing that midfield without with with him there. So instead of him, I've actually gone with another Spanish midfielder and that is Alex Garcia.
00:15:28
Jack
who, if you remember from his time at C, you might not have been too impressed with. He was a kind of fine, passable, competent player in the preseason games that you watched him for the under 23s, the elite government squad and stuff like that. and But since then, you know, he spent four years at Citi's academy. He left in ah twenty at the end of the 2018 season, 2017, 2018 season and to go to Girona, or it might've been at the start, sorry.
00:15:58
Jack
and where he's been kind of a stalwart in that Girona team, which last season did absolutely phenomenally. They are in the Champions League spaces this season. He's moved since from Girona to Leverkusen for a fee of around 20 million euros. He's got a market value of around 25 million euros.
00:16:17
Jack
And I think he's a bit of a late bloomer in that aspect that we're seeing him now really coming to his own as a very competent midfielder. And the reason why I've gone him for the balance is because although he can play anywhere in that midfield similar to Gundogan sort of thing likes it centrally can play a bit more attacking. He can also drop deeper and and and play and dictate the game from a little bit deeper. So.
00:16:39
Jack
He's my makeshift six in this midfield because either side of him, I've gone with two very attacking players. And one of them is, is a player that you mentioned, Lewis, and that is of course, Steven Island. I just love Steven Island. I think we all do it here at Daily Man City. So any excuse that I get to put him in a team, we'll take it. and Love Steven Island. He's going to my team as a kind of operating eight, carrying out the ball because the other side.
00:17:04
Jack
a player who very much likes to attack the box and and be as far forward as he possibly can. Although we've seen a little bit of a difference in his game this season, is of course our greatest ever academy prospect, our greatest ever ah graduate, and and probably one of our prized possessions, is of course Phil Bowden. He's my attending this team.
00:17:23
Jack
You can play him wherever you want across the front three. I imagine Lewis has probably got him in that front three, and but you can play him in the midfield as well. For me, that's his best position. I want him in this team. I want him leading this team. and and Phil Foden is just a player that you build a team around. and I think whichever player ah sorry whichever manager comes in after pep will certainly try and build that team around Foden and I just have a feeling that he's going to be the main guy when pep leaves and I'm excited for whatever happens post pep
00:17:57
Jack
It's going to be a sad time. It's also going to be an exciting time because there's going to be a lot of managers who will come in and see this team now and and want to use specific players. I feel like Phil Foden is one of those players who the next manager is going to build the team around. He is one for the future. He's our greatest ever academy prospect and and he's going to be Manchester City for the rest of his career. That's just the case. That's my midfield.
00:18:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. If Foden ever left, it would be devastating. um Yeah, and I think it's fair to say he's City's greatest academy player. True academy player, never played anywhere else. Been magic ever since he's been in the first team. So yeah, Lewis, if Foden's not in your team, then I am going to have to start worrying about that. But we will find out if Foden is in fact in Lewis' team and the rest of the forwards, and then I'm going to decide which team I think's best.
00:19:17
Jack
yeah
00:19:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Manchester City Podcast. We're here for another World Cup Wednesday. We've done our defence and midfield for City's greatest academy 11.
00:19:29
Lewis
Thank you.
00:19:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just got the attack left to go. Should be the most fun. Jack, kick us off with who's in your forward line.
00:19:36
Jack
Well, I feel like there's one play that's got to be held in down that right wing position for me. and it's probably one of the best, if not the best player in European football right now, and it's Mr. What himself, Cole Palmer. and One brain shirt brain cell too short or too many, you'd say what you want about him, his football ability leaves nothing to be questioned. He is an absolutely phenomenal player and one that us here at Daily Man City have kind of slowly come to realise that it was probably a mistake to let him go.
00:20:12
Jack
Obviously hindsight is 2020. No one could have predicted and that he would have the season that he had last year with Chelsea. We all knew that he was a fantastic player. I don't think any of us wanted to get rid of him. We were okay with him leaving because we got good money for him. But that good money doesn't look like good money anymore because he's one of the best players in Europe at the moment. An absolute output machine can score free kicks, can create from deep. We saw last weekend or the weekend before, producing an absolutely sublime pass to let Neto throw for Jackson's goal. Listen, he is one of the best players in Europe at the moment, and so you have to have him in the team. Whether you like it or not, whether you you know you might be considered a bit of a kind of United fan in disguise, I think he does have a family that supports United. but
00:21:01
Jack
The game from our academy is our product and it has to be in there. Cole Palmer is in the right hand side. On the other side, I feel like this is a player that is indisputable, and but maybe that's just some person like us. One of my favourite city players to ever put on a blue shirt. I was absolutely devastated when he left. Up until a few years ago was our record transfer sale and that is of course Shawnee, right, right, right, Shawn Wright Phillips released by Nottingham Forest when he was 17 but since then
00:21:35
Jack
came to City in 1999, played in the youth setup for a little bit but didn't spend much time in it because he had to pull to himself straight into the first team, he was that good. and He made his first first team debut as a sub in the second like a leg of a league cup match against Burnley and and he's just been electric for us ever since you know that first stint at City, did six years before obviously see that record transfer to Chelsea But he did come back, and and it was great to see him back.
00:22:06
Jack
He's had two stints at City, I've loved him in both. One of my favourite players ever, I think he's a great pundit as well. and Just one of the most lovable City characters ever. And for me...
00:22:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
You won't stick his brother up front.
00:22:19
Jack
Yeah, absolutely. I'm glad they're right, Phil, it's up front. No, I'm not going to. Yeah, you know, when we had that episode where we were talking about Barclays, man, his name got brought up. He's the epitome of a Barclays man. When it comes to city, he was way too good for us when he was at city, way too good. That's why he got that big move to Chelsea in the first place, but he's fantastic. So he's got to be holding down that left wing spot. I know he played predominantly on the right, but we've got to be right wing is there. So Sean, right Phillips on the left, Cole Palmer on the right and upfront is
00:22:52
Jack
A man who I'm probably going to have to try and defend here, because I reckon Lewis might not have him in, I reckon he'll probably have gone for someone a little bit younger, but a player who I feel like probably should have been a lot better than he was, had his career kind of assassinated by injuries, Jules you're doing the dance already, he knows what I'm talking about, and that is of course Daniel Sturridge.
00:23:13
Jack
a sort of kind of journeyman in the Premier League, played for City, played for Chelsea, played for Bolton, Liverpool, West Brom, everywhere. But he came to City's youth team, 2003, made ah three years in the youth setup, and went on to play three years for Manchester City's first team.
00:23:34
Jack
only scored five goals in 21 league appearances but he was a pretty good player at City, he wasn't anything to shout about, was a bit better at Chelsea but obviously made this big name in the Premier League at Liverpool, and just kind of absolutely struck by injuries his whole career, and something that we can relate to having players like Aguero and some company who had their injuries cut short.
00:23:57
Jack
he was still a great player and that as much as it well it doesn't even pay me to say it because we won the league in that season but that season when he was up top with Suarez was probably you know one of two displays of some of the best striking I've ever seen him and Suarez were fantastic and I feel like if Suarez hadn't had that freak season and
00:24:14
Lewis
Well.
00:24:17
Jack
he probably would have given Torre a run for his money for Player of the Season that year. He was so good, scored some free goals, and a pretty stalwart Premier League player, also was really good on FIFA, so what's not to like on your storage. and and And I've mentioned a lot about the these players turning into pundits, he's the funniest one of them all, so he gets points for that as well.
00:24:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dafoe, he's a class pundit. I really like Sturridge. And I think he's a hell of a player. I mean, at City, yeah, he wasn't the best, but he was still only 17, 18 when he was playing for City. Went to Chelsea, broke in their first team.
00:24:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Carlo Ancelotti liked him, but they were one of the best teams in Europe, so he didn't quite have a place for him. And I went to Liverpool, and my God, he was good there. Him and Suarez, that duo, like you said, that's arguably the best ever duo in the Premier League at the same time, how they were tearing every everyone apart.
00:25:03
Jack
Absolutely.
00:25:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
but still not better than Yaya Torre single-handedly winning our Premier League.
00:25:09
Jack
Still got robbed by the way. I'll still stand on that hill that you got robbed of player of the season that year.
00:25:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he was he was absolutely incredible, but that's for another time. So, Lewis, what's your front line looking like? Is it better than Jack's?
00:25:23
Lewis
um Unfortunately, it's very similar to Jack's, just a boy even even more. is On the right for me is is Cole Palmer, too. I think, obviously, Jack's said everything everything that I was going to say about him.
00:25:36
Lewis
But yeah, he's just since he left City, he's become amazing at Chelsea. He's been their main man. He's their man to go to. He's starting every game. He's playing full minutes in every every big game.
00:25:47
Lewis
I do think he still needs to sort of turn up in some of the big games and not just
00:25:51
Jack
Thank you.
00:25:52
Lewis
against the likes of Wolves and that just to prove how good he actually is because he is ah he's a traitor at the end of the day so I'm not going to sing his praises too much.
00:26:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:26:02
Lewis
but i Just some special mentions, I think Elise is a big mention to miss out as it sees Academy, obviously now at Bayern Munich left Palace last season and is performing well for them, I don't watch him a lot but in the Champions League I do and he he's still Excites me on the ball, which which he has done in the Premier League for for quite a few years I think Obviously injured at the moment as well missing out Oscar Bob is definitely a a great show I think the ceiling frame just like Rico Lewis is is very high you really unfortunate about his about his leg break and hopefully next season we can see him back out on the pitch doing his stuff and and becoming a great player that I know he can be and Also, David Brooks was at City's Academy. I think obviously very unfortunate with the
00:26:50
Lewis
with his cancer treatment, obviously it all ill went well thankfully, but I used to really like David Brooks, I used to think he was ah it was a fantastic player, and he's slowly getting back into it now at Bournemouth. So yeah, they are my...
00:27:00
Jack
Yeah, it's good to see him back in the Premier League as well actually. Really good to see him.
00:27:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he's a back in the wheel squad as well and yeah, big love for David Brooks. Definitely.
00:27:09
Lewis
Yeah, I know, definitely. like But to the left wing, you said had to get him in, and this is where I put him, I've put big Philip on the left wing, Foden, I think because of the the options in cam compared to left wing for me were were very strong.
00:27:25
Lewis
On the left wing, the only other people who I considered was Samuel Liddosee, who is getting nowhere near my squad, and Jaden Sancho, who, again, is just he's not lived up to his potential that he once was.
00:27:34
Jack
You did it.
00:27:37
Lewis
So for me, Foden's going on the left wing. Obviously, when he first started playing at City, he was predominantlyly predominantly a winger. He could never get in that cam position, obviously, with De Bruyne being there.
00:27:48
Lewis
But I do think he ah he has got the pace to play there in my team. I think he'll do a good job. and And then my striker, ah I have actually gone as well with Daniel Sturridge. So I didn't go with anyone younger, Jack. I have gone with Sturridge, I think. 26 appearances for England, eight goals. Obviously the the iconic celebration, but like you said, he he was he was fantastic at Liverpool. He was good at Chelsea and For me, I don't think there was anyone anyone better that could that could lead the line for my team. So that is my front three.
00:28:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that completes ah and that completes both both sets of teams. I'm just laughing because Jack's messaged bringing up the Sturridge goal against Wales, but we're not going to talk about that because I'm hosting and I don't want to.
00:28:38
Jack
i
00:28:40
Lewis
ah
00:28:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, so I think I'm just going to reel off what my team would be as well, and then um then do a couple more honorable mentions, and then I'm going to decide which of your teams is better. So I think, it obviously easier to do it now, I can just copy all of your best ones, but I'm going to go Schmeichel and Net, Frimpong, Ben Mee, Chris Coleman, Legend,
00:29:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Rico Lewis on the left as an inverted like as as an inferted fullback, which he does play sometimes.
00:29:11
Jack
Hey, thank
00:29:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'm definitely so um cheating a little bit there, but, you know, inverted. And we're going to need him inverted because the only midfielder I've got really is Lavia. So we've got a Lewis-Lavia pivot.
00:29:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then we've got four. So it's more of a 4-1-4-1. On the right, we've got a Lise. Then in the middle, as the two 10s, we've got Palmer and Foden. And then on the left, we've got Ryan Giggs.
00:29:42
Jack
yeah he played when he was 12 till he was Just to let you know, actually, one of my honourable shout outs for Stryker, obviously other than Liam Delappe, he's doing great.
00:29:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then.
00:29:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hey, hey, some of these players that we've mentioned have not had any appearances for City either. OK, so. And then up front, yeah, it's got to be D Studge. So not fair.
00:30:05
Jack
Ellie Simms is doing fantastic at Coventry this season, City Products, so he just won. Out of all the honourable mentions that he's been mentioned, I have most than that everyone said, but he hadn't been mentioned yet.
00:30:15
Jack
I thought he should
00:30:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he's um he's impressed me a lot since being a Coventry.
00:30:19
Lewis
You
00:30:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I didn't really like him at Everton. I thought he looked sluggish, but he's grown into his body a lot more now and he looks a bit more agile and sharper at Cov.
00:30:24
Lewis
You
00:30:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, fair play to him. So a couple more honorable mentions. I did kind of want to put this goalkeeper in, but then I had to have a reality check and think who was actually better. So there's Wayne Hennessy as well, Welsh legend.
00:30:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think Kasper Schmeichel, Premier League winning and FA Cup captain winning keeper has got to go ahead of him. and We've also got Pedro Porro, who spent a bit of time at Man City's Academy as well, but right back was absolutely stacked, probably the most stacked position to be honest.
00:30:54
Jack
Yeah.
00:30:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Neder Manua was mentioned and and so it was Tarzan, who I think probably hard done by not to get many games at Chelsea so far, I think he's a quality player. Got Felix the marker, 30 million pound sign-in for Dortmund from Wolfsburg, who was at City's Academy as well.
00:31:09
Jack
and
00:31:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Michael Johnson who I'm surprised didn't get in any of your team's guys city legend maybe his peak wasn't well it wasn't long enough was it of course he had a lot of demons but he was amazing when he he burst onto the scene um any other ones no I don't you are sorry Jack uh
00:31:28
Jack
Josh Madger. Josh Madger, West Brom Striker.
00:31:34
Lewis
but
00:31:34
Jack
No.
00:31:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah no he's definitely better than Palmer Foden at least saying gigs yeah yeah
00:31:39
Lewis
back
00:31:39
Jack
but
00:31:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
The only other striker I could think of is Ian Atchill, but Sturridge is just a better version of him really, isn't he?
00:31:44
Lewis
yeah
00:31:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
So no chance of him getting in the team. And I suppose that just leaves us with um picking who's his best. and Obviously mine was the best, but after that it would be, ooh, I'm not fan a fan of your defence, Lewis, I'm not going to lie.
00:32:02
Lewis
I've been talking with other fans.
00:32:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
So i'll just run just run through I'll just run through both teams 1-11 quickly for the viewers. So we have Jax 11, Schmeichel and Nat, Frimpong, me, Richards, Angelino, Alex Garcia, Steven Eiland, Foden, and then Palmer, Sturridge, and Sean Wright Phillips. And then in Lewis' 11, we have also Kasper Schmeichel, Rico Lewis, Horwood Bellis, Eric Garcia, and Josh Wilson-Esbrand, that team,
00:32:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
So far, that that that's not staying up in the championship for the moment.
00:32:29
Jack
Sting.
00:32:32
Lewis
but thank
00:32:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
la Lavia and Barton in the middle. ah Yeah, Lavia, of course, quality.
00:32:38
Jack
We're close enough under the left is almost worse than Eric Garcia.
00:32:42
Lewis
No it's not. but
00:32:46
Jack
Yeah.
00:32:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
and his yeah no it's no Wilson has probably worse than Eric Garcia.
00:32:51
Jack
yeah
00:32:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Diaz in the 10, then Palmer, Sturridge and Foden up top. Well, I like the look of Lewis's attack more. I think Diaz is probably better than Sean Wright Phillips, which is the only difference you guys have got.
00:33:04
Jack
what oh no no no no no no no
00:33:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, someone who plays for Real Madrid and has played for AC Milan the last couple of years. Yeah, I think so.
00:33:17
Lewis
I only had him as a right winger me, otherwise I probably would have put him in cardboard. Yeah.
00:33:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I mean, at the end ah at the end of Diaz's career, I don't think he'll even be debatable. He's only like 24, 25, isn't he? And Sean Wright Phillips' peak was quite short.
00:33:29
Jack
i hes honey no
00:33:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was injury-laden, and when he lost his pace, he lost a lot of himself, I thought.
00:33:35
Lewis
but violations.
00:33:40
Jack
I can't believe what I'm hearing.
00:33:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I don't even think that's that rogue a shout.
00:33:45
Jack
I can't believe what What did he contribute?
00:33:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're literally literally talking about us someone that's won European caps at Real Madrid, like, and he he does what he does play. like 50 appearances last year.
00:33:55
Jack
every ah so Sorry, Braheem Diaz.
00:33:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he comes off the bench nearly every game and he started about 20.
00:34:00
Jack
I have a parent. Oh, I'd have to fact check you on that. 50 appearances.
00:34:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i have I have gone early with that one to be honest.
00:34:11
Lewis
so
00:34:11
Jack
you
00:34:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm also looking, but he he he's he's in the squad every week and he comes off the bench.
00:34:16
Jack
Yeah, but ah he hasn't got a scratch on Shani right.
00:34:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
He also played for Spain when they had a lot of, ah and know I know he plays for Morocco now, but he got on the Spain team and there's a lot of good quality there too. But anyway, and no, not about me.
00:34:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's pick a team right after that comment. Jacqueline Lewis wins hands down to be honest.
00:34:34
Jack
rough
00:34:35
Lewis
Wow.
00:34:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
have
00:34:36
Lewis
Yeah.
00:34:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh I do prefer his midfield as well. You know what, this is tight. um
00:34:43
Lewis
Show me that and
00:34:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Joey, Joey Barton vs Stephen Island really. Oh, it's probably Island in there.
00:34:50
Lewis
but
00:34:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's probably Island. even if it wasn't, it should be because, but I'm not going to finish that sentence. and um yeah ah Is it a cop out to say a draw?
00:34:58
Jack
yeah
00:35:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, definitely.
00:35:03
Jack
yes and
00:35:03
Lewis
yeah
00:35:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. All right. I'm going to go. I'm going to have to pick Jack because that defense is just too shaky for me that if you had Sean Wright Phillips, Palmer, Foden, and Sturridge coming up against Lewis, Howard Bellis, Eric Garcia, and Wilson Esbrand, I'd be a bit worried, I think.
00:35:09
Jack
ah yeah
00:35:11
Lewis
ah
00:35:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
so It was very close, both very good teams highlighting some of the quality that's come out of City's academy, which we now know is one of the best in the world.
00:35:26
Jack
Yes, indeed.
00:35:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Some future players to consider as well. The Dozy was mentioned, Carlos Forbes was the Ajax and The Sims was mentioned, Juan Larios left back at Southampton, Liam Dilap who's killing the Premier League at the moment.
00:35:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bazouno and Shay Charles, maybe, might turn it around at Southampton. C.J. Egan Riley looks promising. James Makati, Oscar Bob, definitely going to be in for a shout to the first team at City when he gets back from injury.
00:35:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Both Doyle brothers, I know you mentioned, you mentioned Tommy, but Calum Doyle as well is very promising, left back, physically good, good on the ball.
00:35:59
Jack
on.
00:36:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Morgan Rogers as well, very good player, breaking into the England team recently. So yeah, I thought it was definitely a worthwhile episode to highlight some of the Quality Cities Academy has had over the years and has ah has to come as well. I hope you've all enjoyed at home. Thanks again to Lewis and Jack for giving me their teams and for um yeah for this very fun episode. It was nice to have a bit of levity in this current situation, guys. and But back to more serious matters, and
00:36:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
City's next game after the international break is Spurs. We'll have plenty of content out before then, some international, another wildcard Wednesday too, and a ah whole GSPN wide episode being recorded tomorrow to be released afterwards in overlap style. So that that could be very exciting and we will keep you up to date when that drops.
00:37:00
