Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to Manchester City Daily, brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. The only place you can get your daily news and updates from every Premier League team every single day. You're finding yourself once again in the blue side of Manchester today, so if you're a fan of Pep's Tricky Blues, then you're in the right place. It's a little bit of a sombre mood at the moment on the Man City pod.
00:00:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I'm delighted to say that after a week off, myself and Lewis enjoy some nice time away. We're back. and yeah How are you doing, Lewis?
00:00:37
Lewis
Yeah I know I'm good, it's good to be back and it's it's good to be to be discussing a topic today other than City's brilliant form, so yeah.

City cult heroes excitement

00:00:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, exactly. They've not given us much to smile about recently, have they, Keelan?
00:00:49
Keelin
No, and to be honest, unlike Lewis, it's terrible to be back. It feels like Vietnam, but we keep it rocking and we make it move. So yeah, it's it's all right to be back, admittedly. Good to have you two back.
00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's great. And you know what? We're we're not putting but putting a damper on today because it's Wild Car Wednesday. It's our favorite day of the week, really, to record. We get to ah make our own rules in a way. And today's episode, oh, it's a good one. It's a good one. I've been looking forward to this one because we're talking about city cult heroes. We're taking away a step away from the current former of the current Manchester City team. We're not thinking about it. We're putting it away. It's it's behind us in our mind because we're talking about some of our ah past legends or cult heroes so players who were admired by the club, admired by the fans when we weren't so good. That's that's what we're kind of going for. So it'd be easy for us to name, you know, your Kevin De Bruyne, your Yaya Torres, David Silvers and Aguero's. We're taking a step away from that. Players who were so good, maybe a little too good for us when we weren't all that great. So like let's kick it off.

Interview with Georgie King Cladsey

00:01:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm gonna go first there because
00:01:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
i was fortunate enough to have a very special opportunity to interview one of these city cult heroes and that is going to be my choice of cult hero which is of course the georgian superstar the georgian messy georgie king cladsey now a couple of weeks ago just before the manchester derby and was fast approaching, which we won't talk about. I managed to sit down with him for a couple of minutes and chat to him just about football, about Man City, about the Derby, how it used to be, and of course a little bit about Georgian football, so let's live give that a listen.

King Cladsey's famous goal discussion

00:06:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
So there you have it, it was a pretty unbelievable experience for me to be able to talk to the Georgian city legend that is King Klaate. Now before I started this, and we talked about some criteria that we would have. So the first one would be, what is your favorite game from this Man City cult hero? What is your best moment that they had?
00:06:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
whether it be a goal or a you know a last ditch block or anything like that and and of course the last question which i touched upon a little bit there which would be could they play for this current city team now i'm going to go with straight away georgie king cladsey best moment for me without a doubt um i'm kind of cheating here because moment and goal will be the same and of course if you know anything about king cladsey it's going to be that goal against south ampton ah Came runner-up for some reason in goal of the season on match the day should have been number one I can't even remember what came first in that but it was a two-on-win and he took it passed about five six seven players And and then lobbed the keeper one of the best goals I've ever seen by a player in a city share very messy ask
00:07:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, you could definitely play for Man City in this current team. Keelan, you have got some big issues with the left-wing spot, particularly one man who's been in headlines recently for all the wrong reasons, and that is Jack Grealish, for not scoring a goal in a full calendar year. Would you revel in King Cladsey being in this team in that left-wing spot now?
00:07:47
Keelin
I take Georgie Kincladsey as he is now over Jack Grealish, 55 years old and all. I mean, it's such a mess we find ourselves in. Imagine 1990s Georgie Kincladsey in this city team. My only concern is that Pep would take away all his flair and his sort of creativity, a bit like what he did to Cole Palmer. But if you imagine Georgie Kincladsey full flow and this in this city team, oh my God, it's game over for everybody.
00:08:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, it would be absolutely fantastic if he was in. I'd take a current Georgia King Closet now to be fair. I don't think you're too wrong on that. But just having that kind of dynamism down that left-hand side would be just so refreshing. And we've not had kind of a player that was capable of beating his man and applying that end product, that finishing, you know, you know end product in the final third, really. I mean, we've seen it with players like Docu now. He was exciting down that left-hand side, but he's a bit hit and miss when he gets to the final third. and But yeah, I think it'd be absolutely... an open goal, really, having King Cladsey, Prime King Cladsey in this city team. I think he'd be such a perfect pet player. But another player that I did mention there, Lewis, Kviche Kvaratskelya, what do you reckon about the possibility of him in this city team? There's been some light links in the past, nothing very concrete, and he's not had his best season in recent years, not since that one where they won Scudetto and Napoli, but they are
00:09:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
near enough top of the league now, he is performing back to his best. What do you reckon? Do you reckon you could see Kivarek Skelly in this city team now?
00:09:23
Lewis
I mean, we definitely need to see changes in January, which is obviously what we've mentioned, but all City fans have mentioned and what we want and what we need. And I don't hate the idea. I mean, I watched him in the Euros for Georgia, like you said, the first time they reached the competition. I didn't think he was as good as he was and in the Champions League after the Scudetto season, like you said. But watching him for Napoli in that record-breaking season, for me, was he was electric. He offered something different.
00:09:51
Lewis
and he certainly stood out in that side for having that attacking that attacking presence and the confidence on the ball, which like you previously said, hopefully, Pep wouldn't take that out of him. I mean, he hasn't taken out a docking and look how that's turned out. iss It's not great, is it? So, but you never know. I mean, I would definitely wouldn't hate the idea and something definitely has to change in January, whether it be him coming to the ad, who knows? But yeah, I wouldn't hate to see it.
00:10:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, absolutely. I completely agree. Now, next segment, we're going to talk about Keelan's iconic Manchester City cult hero. Quick word from our sponsors first though.

Uwe Rosler's Manchester City impact

00:10:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right then, Manchester City daily, it's Jack here, Keelan, no messing about, Manchester City cult heroes, who is yours and why?
00:11:01
Keelin
Boys, there's a lot that I love, but I'm going to get straight into this. There's a certain receding herlined German back in the day who captured the hearts and minds of many an Englishman, especially an English Manchester city supporter. And that man is Uwe Rosler. Um, you know, perhaps one before the young generation, many people won't remember him. He was a brilliant striker alongside my countryman, Niall Quinn. Some might remember him.
00:11:28
Keelin
and But I love Duvet Rosler, um really really good striker, stuck with City through thick and thin, there are for three seasons from 1994 to 1997. To answer your first question, favourite moment from Duvet Rosler was actually a game.
00:11:44
Keelin
I think it was 1995, City played Darby County in the FA Cup and Uwe Roster scores four goals in that game. And in doing so, he becomes, I think it was the first man City player to score four goals in one FA Cup game since Johnny Hart in 1953. So I think it's still, ah it might actually still be a City record if I'm not wrong, and but amazing striker, absolutely loved him to bits.
00:12:12
Keelin
And I still love that he's involved with the club now. and He's over now and again doing things. So it's great that he's not been forgotten. And my favorite moment for Uwe Rosler was he showed up to his signing and he wore a t-shirt that said, my grandad bombed old traffic.
00:12:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:12:29
Keelin
I mean, it does not get better than that. He was as great on the pitches as grandad was off the pitch. Uwe Rosler, you are a legend personified.
00:12:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
What an absolute icon for for Manchester City. I still remember, as soon as you mentioned that, that image just popped up straight in my head and what an absolute man he was. and Great player, great moments, just a city court hero through and through. And what I love about him is, we were talking a little bit before the podcast started,
00:12:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
think up until very recently in the in the past few years when Ilkay Gundwan's you know had those breakout goal scoring seasons where he's popped up in the false nine position and and got goal after goal after goal. I do believe, don't quote me on this, but Uwe Rosler was up there with the, I think he was actually the highest and all-time German goal scorer in the Premier League or at least one of maybe behind Mesut Ozil and up until Ilkay Gundogan started bagging him in left and right so to have a ah lasting Premier League legacy and you know that that was kind of put into into print for so long while we were pretty rubbish is is quite fantastic so I mean Lewis you might not be able to see much of him I didn't watch much of him but
00:13:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
You obviously hear the stories, Uwe Rosler, what player he was. And now he's, of course, a you know a great manager as well. Do you have any fond moments or memories of of him in in in that city team or anything other than Keelan's mentioned, of course, that iconic photo?
00:13:54
Lewis
Thank you. Not a moment specifically, no, I won't lie. But obviously, hearing stories from my dad, I know how good he was and and I have seen just over the years, but just seeing him in the in the rankings of City's all-time top goal scorers, he's up there in in the top 10, top 15 in the Premier League.
00:14:14
Lewis
so So yeah, I'm sure he was a great player and it's sad I didn't get to see him play live.
00:14:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, of course. and and And one of the few German players that we've actually had played for the club. I think, Keeling, in the 1994-95 season, Rosler was the club's leading goal scorer, actually, and won the club's Player of the Year award as well. So, he was loved not only by the by the players and the fans alike,
00:14:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
and he had that nice little partnership there with Paul Walsh at the top. He actually scored 22 league and cup goals that season, which you know is a pretty good return that we'd probably revel one of our players currently now having. Final question, Keeling, could he be playing right now in this Manchester City team?
00:14:54
Keelin
I mean, the way City are playing at the moment, 100%. I mean, Erling Haaland doesn't have even a remotely competent competition place in the squad. Uwe Rosler challenging Erling Haaland? Yes, give me some of that, absolutely.
00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
yep Yeah, that would be great. I think that probably you and Rosalie would have played with Alfie Harland actually as well. um um We'd like to have seen a bit of overlap there.
00:15:17
Keelin
Probably.
00:15:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe you can come back now and play with his son and and give him some competition because God knows he need it. Right, Keelan, I love that choice. That's a Manchester City Call hero through and through. After this next ad, we'll be getting stuck into Lewis's choice and running off the episode with who we think is the ultimate Manchester City Call hero.
00:15:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just have to worry from these sponsors.

Sean Goater as a cult hero

00:16:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, welcome back Manchester City Daily. No messing about, Lewis Royal, it is your turn to present to words who you think is the ultimate Manchester City cult hero. And I believe you've got a pretty good choice because I trust you. So without further ado, you've got the floor, Lewis.
00:16:24
Lewis
Yeah, um I'm glad you do trust me and hopefully that Keelan trusts me as well. My ultimate city cult hero is no other than Bermuda legend, Sean Goater. I mean, Feed the Goat and he will score the famous Chan. it It doesn't need any explaining. He was first actually, which people many people don't know was at Manchester United before he made his first and senior appearance.
00:16:50
Lewis
ah but he did sign in for Manchester City from I think it was Bristol City for a fee of £400,000 in 1998, played until 2003, our first season in the Etihad.
00:17:04
Lewis
He scored over 100 goals and finished as the club's top scorer for four consecutive seasons in a row. I mean nothing more really needs to be said.
00:17:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:17:14
Lewis
In terms of my favourite moment from him obviously I didn't get to watch him live But it was the iconic, like Jack said pre-recording, the last Manchester Derby at Main Road, the iconic 3-1 victory where he shoves Gary Neville over in the corner um in front of the United fans and then puts the ball away into the far the far corner of the net.
00:17:37
Lewis
And like Jack also mentioned, Peter Schmeichel was in the goal for us, celebrating against his, well, he is a United legend. So yeah, for me, I absolutely love Sean Goeter and he's a city legend.
00:17:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's so many moments, like so many bits and parts of that moment, that specific goal that just make it so, so appealing to City fans being the last derby at Main Road, being the fact that he mugs off Gary Neville of all people, the fact that he slots it past Fabian Bartes, who has been rumoured to be featuring on our all-time bold Premier League 11 killing, which we still need to do, by the way.
00:18:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
and It is coming, don't worry, it's coming.
00:18:13
Keelin
Absolutely.
00:18:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
The fact that Mark Vivian Foes plays the ball to him completely mishits it and he still gets on the end of it. Like you said, my favorite part of that though is Lewis is when the ball goes in the back of the net it cuts to a certain someone celebrating between our sticks which is of course Peter Schmeichel and I think that might have been the game where if you're remembering the tunnel pre-match where Gary Neville refused to shake Peter Schmeichel's hand and told him to get onto the other side of the tunnel, you know the home scene, teams on that, I think it might have been that one, it might have been the one at mean Old Trafford actually and that season but either way so many things to like about that moment, so many things to like about that goal
00:18:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we haven't even talked about a man feed the goat and he will score one of our greatest players ever Not only just a cult hero. He was so good when we were not so good 103 goals and I think it's 212 216 appearances 212 appearances that's nearly one in two. That's absolutely a ridiculous strike rate Lewis Do you think that he could make I mean it seems like a daft question I've been having read the out that stop or do you think he could play in this this city team? Just think he's got a slot there
00:19:23
Lewis
yeah definitely like you said at the minute with our performance he definitely will get a slot for me in our team I mean it's nearly Harlan numbers that and obviously Harlan doesn't have a good enough understudy at the minute so I think yeah he'd sit perfectly in there and maybe even start ahead of Harlan if he doesn't start scoring more like he used to soon so yeah yeah
00:19:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And you know what I think I love most about Sean Go is the fact that he could play in a two so well. I mean, that that game, I think he played alongside Nicholas and Elka up front. We've seen him have an iconic partnership shit with Paul Dickoff.
00:19:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
He could play in a two next to ah you know a different type of striker, a similar striker. So maybe he could come in and play in that front two next to Harlan. Peps rarely use the front two of strikers in his tenure at City.
00:20:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've seen a little bit of experimentation with Aguero and Jay Zeus at the time. And there were some good moments that came from that, but it's never really cemented itself as a specific tactic or strategy that we've used throughout. Just just on that, Keelan, would you like to maybe have the possibility of that being brought back under Pep Guardiola? Do you think that maybe that's a tactical fix that you can apply to this city team now? Is maybe getting a a player in in January and using him alongside Harland? Like we've seen in the past with these iconic partnerships like Sean Goeter and others. this but What do you think of that?
00:20:39
Keelin
Boys, you've convinced me I want 442 back. I have to have it in my life.
00:20:43
Lewis
Nothing.
00:20:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:20:45
Keelin
Uwe Rosler and Sean Gouder up front. I mean, Georgie Conclati and Ali Bernardi in midfield.
00:20:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow,
00:20:51
Keelin
Andy Morrison alongside Ruben Diaz. Who doesn't want to see this?
00:20:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
unbelievable.
00:20:56
Keelin
Who does not want to see this? Danny Tieto at left back. I don't care. But yeah, 442 is not a bad idea. i mean If you think back to a few years ago when we absolutely massacred Liverpool 5-0 at the Etihad, that was basically ah the 4-4-2 with Aguero and Jesus. Sterling and Sanay either side. I mean, there's certainly benefits to working. As long as for the love of whatever deity you pray to, do not don't even think of putting Mateus Nunez up front with Erlang Holland, or I might actually lose my mind completely. Sign Mateus Cunha from Wolves, do a 4-4-2, why not?
00:21:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. I mean, you're not particularly a fan of Mateus Nunez anywhere on the pitch at the moment. We see him in the derby again.
00:21:38
Keelin
No.
00:21:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's playing some sort of left wing back inverted midfielder role. Didn't really work out, did it, Keelan? And not mistaken the last minute.
00:21:47
Keelin
No, that boy belongs on the team bus. That's the only place he belongs.
00:21:50
Lewis
So.
00:21:51
Keelin
and I'm sorry, I'm just not half a month.
00:21:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do feel bad for him. it It's kind of a situation like Calvin Phillips, where he's obviously a good lad, but he's just not cut at the same quality the city players should be. He's just not up to the standard that we should demand from from these current city cropper players at the moment. so It's an unfortunate situation, but we've got to get

Consensus on Sean Goater's hero status

00:22:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
moving. So they are our Manchester City cult heroes. Before we leave, I want us to unanimously decide on who we think is the ultimate cult heroes out of those three. I'm happy to coincide that although
00:22:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
my Georgian King, Geo King Classy was fantastic for City. I think that there is one standout in the bunch and I'm going to nominate my vote and and switch it to feed the goat and he will score because for me, he epitomizes everything that there is to be a Manchester City cult hero. However, if Lewis, you heard that, you know, you and Rosla might have tickled your fancy, you're happy to switch your vote, you can change, you two take it over. Who do you actually think is the ultimate City cult hero?
00:22:55
Keelin
I think the ultimate city hero is Sean Goder, to be honest. and I love Uwe Rosler and that'll never change, especially the fact that his grand and flattened old Trafford from 30,000 feet, but you know but it just is Sean Goder. When you think of City and you think of that old kit, you think of Sean Goder. He pushed over Gary Neville, made him look like a mug, although that's not terribly difficult to do.
00:23:20
Keelin
You know, he scored a goal every two games in a city team that wasn't brilliant by any stretch of the imagination. He's an icon. He stretches across generations. It just is Sean Goeder.
00:23:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Lewis, I mean, it seems pretty unanimous from us too. Are you happy to stick with your shout?
00:23:39
Lewis
Yeah, I'm glad I've ah i'm glad i won a vote this episode after my Wilson Esbrand horrendous ah take a few weeks ago. So yeah, I'm happy to just stick with you and go and I'll take the victory.
00:23:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Don't worry, Lewis, at the end of the season, we will be doing a Manchester city daily worst takes of the season. And there will be some absolute howl is appearing on that. And don't think I have let myself forget every day that I did it for them to go down at the start of the season, following the top half the table, being in teams left, right and center.
00:24:01
Lewis
and
00:24:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
It looks worse and worse every day. Don't worry. Stick around to the end of the season because you'll get to bully me all you like for that one. and I've heard it enough from these lads here. But listen, that has been our Manchester City Cult Heroes. And I think it was a pretty good episode. I think we nailed on who we think is the number one iconic cult hero. And it just is Shongo. He epitomizes everything that it means to be city. and So very happy with that decision. Very happy that we've landed on that one. But for now, though, we have been Manchester City daily. And enjoy the rest of your day. Thank you very much.
