Hello and welcome to the Daily Brighton podcast. It's your boy, Jamie G. I'm joined by my handsome friend, Joe Richardson. Joe, how are you feeling? Come on, yeah, I'm all right. I'm decent, mate. I'm decent. Bit under the weather, but I'm all right, mate. I'm ready for the weekend.

Preview: Brighton vs. Man City

Yes, and this weekend we are playing Man City at 5.30 on Saturday. Prime time game. Jules, welcome to the pod. And how are you feeling? Yeah, I feel good. I feel a lot better than City do at this moment in time. Three losses on the bounce, but I back the boys to sort that out against you on Saturday. Yeah, and joining Jules, part of the Man City team is Lewis. Tough defeat against Sporting. Do you reckon you can bounce back, Lewis? Yeah, well, hopefully we really can bounce back. It's definitely needed, especially in my house anyway, it's needed. But yeah, how are you? Yeah, I can imagine in loads of Man City households, especially with your age, kind of Lewis, I can imagine you haven't experienced this level of loss for a while. This is three losses in a row for the first time since 2018, if I'm not wrong. No, 2021 City lost three times as well, yeah. To be fair, I've said it before, but I do remember the 8-1 against Middlesbrough in 2008 or something. It's vaguely in the back of my mind.

Man City's Struggles: Injuries and Tactics

That's when they were starting to turn things around as well. Robinho might have been there. What what has, has the last kind of month or last kind of couple of weeks been like as a City fan? I'll go to you first, Lewis. Well, it's just been a bit different. Normally, obviously we're dominating games, which is what we've obviously seen over the last few, well, the last six or seven seasons. But it's just, it's different, not in terms of results. Obviously, we're second in the league and we're still doing well based on forms, two points off Liverpool. But it's the way we're playing, like we've said on our pod before, we don't look like we're going to beat teams. I mean, we played Southampton, we only scraped to 1-0 against Southampton. That's unlike us. Mostly, we're beating teams like that 5-6-0. But I just think we're getting caught on the counter far too easily compared to recent seasons. We concede in first a lot, which isn't like us at all. And we're just not scoring as many goals. I don't go into a game and think, oh yeah, we're going to batter these, and especially against you on the weekend. I'm not confident at all. Obviously, I'll back the boys. But yeah, it's just, it's a different city. But obviously, we've got players out. We know we do. But hopefully, we can turn things around shortly. Yeah. And I guess, Jules, why aren't you able to score as many goals as we're kind of used to as just watching City as a neutral perspective? I think there's a few different factors. The first is definitely injuries. If you lose your two best players in Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne pretty much all season, then you're going to struggle in midfield. Midfield has been the main issue. And you've got two young wide attackers in Doku and Savino who were both electric on the day, but they't really found top output at City yet Savino obviously only been a couple of months look the sharper of the two in my opinion but yeah need more goals from him like in the past there's players like Mahrez, Sterling, Sane you know you're going to get double figures from them guys haven't seen that yet and then you're relying on just Erling Haaland Haaland, the next top scorer for City in the league is with three goals, and that's Guardiola and Kovacic. Two players you would not have bet to score any this year, probably. Maybe Guardiola, sure. But you don't want to rely on your left back to score goals all season, really. Yeah, so there's been a lot of change, a lot of players in and out of the team, and vital ones at that

Brighton's Tactical Opportunities

as well. And yeah, like Lewis said, even the games the City have been winning. So I know it seems a bit maybe rich to complain two points off the Premier League and still in the top few positions of the Champions League. But even the games that were being won were dangerous. You know, there's been no blowouts, only just beating Ipswich at home, only just beating Southampton at home. These are teams I expect other good teams to put four or five on throughout the season. So, yeah, quite tricky at the moment. Yeah, rumour has it, Joe. No, no Rodri, no party. Yeah, it's not looking good, bruv. I'm not going to lie. I'm not right. Pep needs Rodri. No, Joe you know what? He looks weak without him. Do you know what? I saw something on Twitter today. Apparently, after Southampton, he said, I can learn a lot from Russell Martin. And then they went and lost three on the bounce. So, obviously, he learned a ton, mate. So, obviously, he wasn't lying. But, in all fairness, like, I said this literally two seconds ago when we were recording, like you guys will still look like you're, you're like having loads of possession and you also still, you're having loads of shots and creating chances, maybe not putting them away. But I just think in transition teams that... So if you think about all the games you play, most teams are going to come and they're going to just sit in their box, basically, and just wait for a chance. That chance now, the chance of that actually happening in transition is so much higher without Rodri there. So I feel like it just gives teams confidence. And then I feel like what you'll find is one team's gone. They didn't look that great against Southampton. Let's give them a game, beat you. Then you go to Bournemouth. They go, let's give you a game, beat you. And then Sporting, to be honest, that Sporting could have been five all. You could have, you had so many chances against Sporting. They obviously had loads of chances as well. But like, it just gives teams a bit of confidence thinking like, okay. And then obviously in the Brighton game, we played really well against Liverpool. And then obviously we didn't get the result, but then we're going to, you're going to come to the Amex and we're going to think, well, we can get something out of it. So yeah, that's the way I think it's at at the moment. I agree with everything you've said there, Joe, to be fair. Even the Russell Martin bit. Especially the Russell Martin bit. Especially. I actually remember the press conference after, on Match of the Day, I watched the press conference of Pep Guardiola and Bernardo Silva both

Midfield Woes Without Rodri

going, yeah, they played out from the back, they were really brave. Yeah, let's learn something from them. And yeah, you bang on, mate, because they have actually learnt. They've learnt to give the ball away, which is basically what's happened all season, hasn't it, Lewis? You've been pretty weak in midfield, like Jules said earlier. And it's kind of the disappearance or the void that Rodri has kind of left in terms of why you've been so weak in midfield and kind of given the ball away so much more often than we're used to. Like I said, we keep getting hit on the counter and you can see when we do get hit on the counter, there's that massive hole in midfield. Obviously, without Rodri there, it is. But we can't. We're one of the best clubs in the world, if not the best club in the world, in my opinion anyway, and I'm sure Jules agrees. But we can't be relying on your Rodri's and De Bruyne's being out when we're meant to be known to have this squad depth. And we spoke of it before. I don't think our squad is as big this season with the quality. I mean, Simpson-Poussé started yesterday, an 18-year-old inexperienced centre-back against Sporting and Away in the Champions League. I mean, our squad is thinning. You can clearly see that. But we just need to stop conceding so early and just switch on in games, which is what we

are used to. It's like we're going into a game, obviously four in a row, just to rub it in, thinking that, oh, yeah, we can easily win it. We can easily dominate these games. But I can see nearly against Ipswich, Fulham, Brentford, it's just the same that we're seeing. I think it is mainly partly due to the fact that Kovacic is having to sit on his own and then Rico Lewis is coming into that midfield and obviously he's still learning, even though I do love him. So, yeah, I just think it is really hurting us and it's going to hurt us throughout the season. Yeah.

Brighton's Tactical Choices Against City

00:08:27

And yeah, after this short break, we're going to be talking about how we see the game going between Brighton and Man City. And I'll put questions to both of you. But first, let's listen to this Zencast breaking news from your team. Subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and make us your first listen every day. Global Sports Podcast Network, every club, every.ad. day. And we are back with the Daily Brighton and Man City podcast. Joe, I want to put it to you first because I know we were talking about, we're kind of confused how we go about the game on Saturday or how Herzl will go about the game on Saturday. Obviously, Bournemouth went at them like fully pressing, real high intensity from basically minute one and they got a win out of it. Other teams have gone there with the traditional approach to Pep's game where they just sit back in rows of four and defend for their lives and then just try and nick a goal like kind of Newcastle did. How do you see Herzl playing? I just think you have to look at it as like with the, I feel like we could definitely swamp them out if we were to, especially the press that we deployed against Liverpool. But the only thing is that that's obviously such high risk, but the reward is so high as well. Whereas when we played Newcastle, we sat back and we literally just hit, it was one long ball and then up to Ruta and then a pass through to Wellbet, done, goal. Then we just defended for the rest of the game. So we obviously could do both, but I just don't see, at home, I personally wouldn't want to see us just sit back and just wait for them to eventually break us down. Because all

City's Resilience Despite Injuries

00:10:31
Speaker
it would take is a Gavardio goal from outside the box or just off a set piece, just one header. And then, what, you're going to be chasing the game. And then once you start chasing the game is when they're going to start picking you off. Once the space is open, once the space is open up, then, I mean, they're going to hurt you, aren't they? It's not that they don't have 20 first-team players injured. As like an Arsenal would make you believe that they don't have any players. Genuinely, they still have sick players everywhere. But like, it's just that you don't really want to sit in there like Arsenal did. I know they had 10 men but like like Arsenal did you don't just want to sit in there and just wait for them to put you to the sword I'd much rather see organized pressing you don't have to do it all game but go up there bring the game to them get a result like get a goal sorry and then maybe you can then go back into your sort of formation or whatever you want to do. But I think that we need to press, especially how we did against Liverpool because that was really good. Yeah, I feel if you do, or if we do sit off them, it's kind of inevitable. Whichever team sits off City, I feel it's inevitable a goal will eventually come. And this season, it's come by way of either a John Stones header in the dying minutes or a Josko Varjo massive worldy finish on the edge of the box. Even Kovacic have popped up with a couple on the edge of the box as well. So yeah, I'm with you. I kind of want to see us watch what Bournemouth did and take that approach. Jules, how do you see the game going? I think if you look at the last three games that City have lost, all three teams have gone at City. They've pressed high, they've taken advantage of the lack of solidity in midfield and I think created loads of chances through that. So yeah, I completely agree. I think if you sit off, then there's an area of inevitability that City will find a way because I think that is how Pep tries to create every game state to have basically all of the ball and the team defending outside the box. Hence why you wouldn't think this, but under Guardiola, no team has shot more outside the box than City and it's by some distance as well. Guardiola, Carver Church, Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, these are all players that regularly shoot from distance. So I wouldn't sit off. I'd get right in amongst it. There's players like Kevin De Bruyne who might be forced back. He came on for five minutes at the end of the sporting game. You've got to get into him. Foden does not look good in the Premier League as well. Kovacic looks pretty lightweight. Rico Lewis can look lightweight at times. Of course, these are all phenomenal footballers as well. But there is an issue at the moment. And you guys could be the first team to ever cement four losses in a row for Pep Guardiola, which would be quite some achievement. And you're playing well. I think you're definitely up for it, but I would be very surprised if we didn't see City coming back very strong here, because this is a wounded beast. You don't win six out of seven Premier Leagues, and you throw a treble in there as well, unless the whole squad has got that hunger.

Is Amex Stadium Intimidating?

00:13:42
Speaker
I have a feeling that you might be on the end of it come Saturday evening. By the way, I just have to point out the subtle name drop slash accolade drop that you've done there. Just a little treble in there as well. Rub it in a bit more. We haven't won a trophy for a while. If you ever win a trophy, mate, well, let's say a treble, sorry, then you'll definitely bring it up whenever, trust me. Whenever possible. Never fails. Lewis, one thing I want to know is do teams, because I think this season, probably more so, I guess under Dezerbi as well, but do teams actually fear coming to the Amex? And I mean, you've played Bournemouth, which is also a South Coast team, lost to them. You're staying down the South Coast. Is Brighton actually an intimidating place to go nowadays? Well, for me and my experience, it's definitely not. No, I think we've only lost there once once I think we've only lost that once in the whole of the Premier League and it was if I'm not mistaken Cancelo got sent off quite early on in like the 11th minute or something Lewis just to come in there the record in the Premier League is played 14, won 12 drawn 1, lost 1, scored 40, conceded nine. So there you go. Yeah. We get it. You want to treble as well. Do you want to throw that in the mind? Oh, Lord. Yeah, but anyway, like Jules has said, that's why I don't fear it. But this weekend, I think, is probably the time when I fear going to the Amex the most. I mean, of late, we have been following the suit of Arsenal. I mean, losing at Bournemouth, obviously used Drew with Arsenal at the Emirates as well. Maybe a draw is on the cards. But like Jules was saying, three in a row with City, we can't lose forever. There's got to be a win on the cards sooner rather than later and hopefully it is on the weekend. But 4-0 last season, we defeated you at the Ammonick. Sorry, I'm just loving rubbing it in. However, right now, just the mindset I feel is obviously very different and you just gave Liverpool a good game for, well, 70 minutes, wasn't't it? Obviously, you didn't come out with a result. I do feel like I mentioned with us getting caught on the counter, I do think that the pace of your wingers, obviously, Cardioglu scored against Liverpool and then obviously, Mitoma on the other side, are definitely going to cause us issues going forward. I think that the game is going to be one on the wings like it has been many times in our last three defeats. Yeah. Well,

Haaland's Role and City's Scoring Challenges

all I heard from that, I ignored every part of that. I don't know about you, Joe, but all I heard was this could be the day that we actually get the fear against me. There's like a tinge of fear in there. Yeah. The rest of it it ignored, especially when he just brought up last season's result. Didn't need to know that. Well, you guys know what it's like to lose three in a row, surely? Yeah, and on that note, we are going to go to our second ad with

efficiently. If you're ready to tell your story, then check out the link in the show description to learn more about Zencastr. And we are back with the Daily Brighton and me. Man City podcast. This segment, I think we'll talk about how you guys think you can hurt us and vice versa. So what is the key jewels for Man City unlocking Brighton and putting a couple past us and holding on to a win? Feed in Haaland. Good service to Haaland because it's just not been there for the last three games. It's just not been there at all. And he's still missed a hat full of chances. But yeah, I think Savinho's got to start. He seems to be the most creative player in the team at the moment. So, yeah, good service into Haaland. If you can create three chances for Haaland, you back him to score at least one or two, possibly all three of them. So, I think with the lack of solidity in the midfield, we're going to see a lot of wing play and hopefully that will mean a better delivery for Haaland. That's where I see it being won and lost. Yeah, Joe, Julio Igor versus Haaland. There's only one winner, right? Clearly Julio Igor. Yeah, we got back our boy Julio. I want to see Igor absolutely crunch him two seconds in. But the only thing is that Haaland's got a bit of bite about him as well, hasn't he? Well, the thing is, Haaland, if he goes in to crunch him, Haaland's a robot, so he won't feel any effect. Yeah, no, it's mad. Yeah, but just, yeah, you just need to stop him. You know what you need to do when you go and play against Man City. You know that he's going to get some sort of chance somewhere, whether he fashions that for himself or if it's given to him. But you just need to stop it, make it as hard for him as possible. That's pretty much all you can do against a player like that. There's not really, there's not tons of, there's not like a, oh, this is the strategy to like stop him. You just got to hope really. But, you know, he missed a few chances in the last couple of games. So, let's just hope that that continues. Long may it continue,

Foden's Role Amidst Team Injuries

00:19:29
Speaker
mate. Long may it continue. On a reel, I think Van Hecker's got his work cut out, babysitting Hulu Igor and defending against... Everyone, yeah. But the player I fear, and I think he's PFA Player of the Year last year, Phil Foden. Jules, you said that he hasn't really performed in the Prem. At all, at all, to be honest. I mean, I've got him in my fantasy team. Why isn't Pep Guardiola? Yeah, the draft one, I would love to sub him out. I'm looking for a trade. But that's a different point. Why is Pep Guardiola doing Pep Roulette where he just plays random people over the best player for City? Well, he came back from the Euros not fully fit. So that basically answers the question at the start of the season. I don't know why're rolling your eyes you know city had players that were in international tournaments i'm not sure i'm not sure if you know what that is but um i had a couple yeah um city's entire team but yeah anyway um yeah so um a lot of players didn't come back fully fit foden probably the most of that so he took a a little little bit longer. He had some time off as well. And then he was introduced slowly. And he's just not quite found a pace at the moment. He has played. The last month or so, he has started pretty much every game. So he is being trusted by Pep. And I wouldn't say it's roulette. I think the injuries have just caused so much lack of consistency in the selection. I wouldn't really say it is Pappy and Pap. It's just the squad has about 14 players in at the moment without academy. Oh, no! Yeah. Oh, no! What are we going to do? You have a squad of like 50 players, right? That's just for a good scouting though. That's great scouting. I mean, our starting centre mids against Liverpool were Jack Hinsherwood, who's from the academy. Played every game. And Yari, who's 800k. I mean, there's no better scouting than a guy from Sweden who cost 800k from Gothenburg. I don't know what our scouts are doing in Gothenburg. They're on there for a holiday. Come back with a Yari. He's going to probably start against you guys. Fear the man Yasin. I'm not going to lie. Also, I'm not buying this phone and stuff, mate, because he was ponying the Euros, mate. What's he injured from, mate? From what, mate? From playing top-class football 70 games a season for like five years since the age of 18. Yeah, but what about the Euros? My man was not there in the Euros, mate. Yeah, he was the only poor player in the Euros, absolutely, yeah. He's come back and he's just all of a sudden forgotten how to play football. He forgot about the Euros.

Kyle Walker's Form: Peak or Decline?

00:22:30
Speaker
So I'm tagging you in here, mate. Come on. I just think that the disrespect unfolding is shocking. If you watch him, you'll see on Saturday he's still the best player in the league. So, yeah, we'll find out. He's not even the best player in Man City, mate. You literally have the best player in the world at your club as well. I feel like until the next PFA winner is announced, it's fair to call him the best player in the league, right? Do you know what I mean? How? Because he's the current winner of the best player in the league award. Yeah, but you have the best player in the world at your club. Yeah, that's true, actually. Who isn't in the squad and won't be all season. Oh, you're saying rugby? Yeah, of course, yeah. Is he not? Yeah, but he's the best player in the world. Yeah, but he's not going to play against shoes. Yeah, I know. Of course, yeah. But I'm just saying, like, if he's... So, Phil Fone is not the best player in the Premier League. Like, he is, obviously, if you want to give him that thing. But you also have the best player in the world. Well, if you want me to slowly say this or break it down for you guys, that's fine. But, you know, the Ballon d'Or is about all football, including international and Champions League and stuff. Whereas the Premier League Player of the Year just means the Premier League. You're saying it like Rodri doesn't play for Man City in the Premier League. You're being intentionally facetious now. Come on. I don't even know what that word means. So we'll move on. I'll tell you what. Do you know who isn't close to being Man City's best player anymore? Or probably never was, sorry. And is having an absolute stinker of a year. And maybe you can prove me wrong or argue this with me. But Kyle Walker, good God. That guy's come back from the Euros. I'll tell you, someone who needs a holiday some rest after Euros. It's him. He has been woeful. No arguments there. He did fight Adama Traore and outpaced. And then a Semenyo last week was cooking. Yeah. He's spending too much time in clubs, I think, lately because his pace is gone and he looks like he's completely past it, in my opinion. But another one... I was actually right then. I was accepting some bite back too far. I think he's been past it for a couple of years, really, but he's such a good athlete that his recovery defending is phenomenal, but even that looks to have gone now. So then you're just left with a full- who's not that good on the ball, who isn't really that good defensively. And you're like,

Brighton's Strategy: Speed and Space

00:25:09
Speaker
what is he offering the team at this point? I know he's a leader, but on the pitch, Rico Lewis is five times the player he is. I was just about to ask him if you think Rico Lewis is better. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Definitely. Yeah. And we'll probably go back to how this conversation all started is how you guys can hurt us. And now, Joe, how can we hurt them? To be honest, I reckon pace on the wings and just getting stuck in the midfield, mate. They have a couple of players in there who probably can't believe their luck that they're starting games for Man City this season. Matthias Nunes must be thinking, what is going on, mate? I thought I was here to just chill and get money on the bench. Starting left winger now. Yeah, I know, mate. It's outrageous. He actually can't, he generally can't believe it. No one can, mate. So, I just reckon you've got to get into him, mate. It's just the way. I don't want to see sitting back, actually. It's not good to watch, is it, really? It's not hurts the ball, either. No, it's not hurts the ball, really. Apart from Newcastle, which is so random. Yeah, that was a one-off random. Yeah, one-off random part of the bus. But, yeah, we just need to get out of them, exploit the space on the wings, and, yeah, just take the game to them, I think, really, and then see what happens. Yeah. I feel like it's a bit of a different one or I feel like our forward players are a bit different to what City have experienced, especially in the last couple, like Jokerej couldn't be more different than Danny Welbeck. And then also Evan Nilsson is a bit different to both and Semenya running in behind. I reckon what I will actually see and come back to me when this actually happens is Danny Welbeck sitting deep, dropping deep and then just knocking balls to like an on running Mitoma down the line. And that's why I just, and then Mitoma just running direct, just being as direct as possible, taking it to whoever your right-back will be that day, if it is Kyle Walker, if it is... I think that's the way. I agree. I think you'll find a lot of space in behind because City ain't going to change their high line. That's never going to happen, ever. So there will be opportunities. I think if you just need to play the extra pass in midfield to bait the press, the same way Sporting did, and I think you can get loads of joy. Yeah. And do you reckon this is actually a game four? I know we say it every week, and he's not played for a while, Joe. Is this a game four Minter with his pace in behind? If he's fit, then yeah. But the only thing about Minter is that he's just got awful decision making. And in games like this where you need to be clinical, it's... Up against Guardiol. Up against Guardiol as well, he'd be, wouldn't he? Yeah. And Guardiol's actually... He's actually an accomplished defender as well. I know that he obviously scores these goals, but he's actually generally a really good defender as well. He's twice his size as well. Minta's quite slim. Yeah, of course. And he's got pace, but yeah, I reckon he could get shrugged off the ball. Navarro's no slouch either, to be fair to him. Maybe. It depends if he's fit. I'm not sure if we'd risk him straight

away. Bringing him off the bench with tired legs could be the way to go. Yeah, 100%. I think slipping balls through and potentially just playing direct football, running at them and then slipping balls through. Because I think you've been caught out by... Everyone. Anthony Gordon wins the pen. Yeah, to be fair, yeah. I was just thinking of examples. Anthony Gordon winning the pen for Newcastle. That was never a pen, by the way. I was never a pen. Hey, that's for you to debate with the Newcastle, lad. I was making it clear. But yeah, what are everyone's score predictions? Lewis, we'll start with you. I'd probably say like a 1-1 or 2-2 sort of game. Plenty of goals, I think, obviously, with both sides being quite attacking. But I just don't see us keeping a clean sheet again. We've only kept two all season. I don't see it changing on Saturday, I really don't, especially with the threat that Jules has said, which you have on the wings with the pace and the weakness in our team at the minute. I mean, another one except Karl Walker, is Ilkay Gundogan hasn't woke up yet and he's still not performing to the standard he was at Barca in the Euros or when he was previously at City two, three years ago. So, yeah, I'd probably say a high-scoring draw. Yeah. Jules, what's forward to you? I was going to also say high-scoring draw, but one of us has got to have more faith in City. So the losing run will be finished and City will win 3-2. There's got to be goals in this game. City can't keep a clean sheet and you guys score lots of goals. So I think 3-2 City, but it could go either way, to be honest. By the sounds of what Jules has just said, City concede lots of goals and we score a lot, Joe. It's going to be 5-0 us, right?
