Introduction and Upcoming Matches

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Manchester City Podcast on the Global Sports Podcast Network. And today on episode 58, as is the beauty of football, we have the opportunity to look ahead with optimism as there's always another match on the way. And we have a Friday forecast in store for you and that involves the Manchester Derby. It doesn't get much bigger and better than the noisy neighbours Man United coming to town.
00:00:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
We will look briefly ahead to the 195th Manchester Derby and also at the other fixtures around the world's greatest league this weekend.

Insights on Manchester Derby

00:00:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Joining me again today is Keelan McNamara. Hi Keelan.
00:00:45
Keelin
Hello.
00:00:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, we have obviously covered a lot during the crossover episodes, and but as it's the Manchester Derby a little more couldn't hurt. Everyone at Daily Manchester City and I'm sure any of you listening will have been pretty distraught at the recent run the club has been on, but it's all about perspective. At least it's not as bad as what's happening over in Salford.
00:01:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
10 hog win in the FA Cup final. Captain Minajabi clearly wasn't capable of handling for reasons within and outside of his control and United's start to the season was absolutely rubbish. What a shock. And now even with Reuben Amorim they still only have one win from his four Premier League games. They set 13th in the table, nine points away from City, have only won five from 15 in the league this season. and Only got a goal difference of plus one, in fact unexpected goal difference to the negative. Huge money, seemingly wasted in the summer yet again, and more backroom problems with Dan Ashworth leaving this week. Any of that cheer you up Keelan?
00:01:40
Keelin
Yeah, I mean to be for the Salford Cline show does make me feel a little bit better from time to time. and Usually it's a lot sweeter whenever you're the best team in Europe but I mean to be for them making absolute idiots out of themselves makes my day a little bit brighter at least in sky

Drama at Manchester United

00:01:58
Keelin
blue. But yeah, I mean we had the Manchester United boys on yesterday. and We talked about just how much of a mess that club is at the moment.
00:02:08
Keelin
you touched on Dan Ashworth there, know they made this big hullabaloon song and dance about poaching the best sporting director in the world from Newcastle, you know, gardening leave paying him three million pounds to come over from Tyneside and I bet he probably wishes he'd have stayed in Newcastle because it's been an absolute horror show since he's been at United, at the worst yeah United just to be clear,
00:02:34
Keelin
And yeah, it's been it's been very interesting to see with the On United, obviously with the Amaran, people thought the power dynamic would be shifting, so far the results haven't followed that. But yeah, it's it's always interesting to see what the noisy neighbours get up to, and it'll be interesting to see how they continue to go.
00:02:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm Dan Ashworth, that's probably, and in my memory at least, the most embarrassing sporting director appointment saga of all time. The way that they publicly courted him, the amount of money they spent, which was probably a record for someone in that position.
00:03:10
Keelin
Yeah.
00:03:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
He went on gardening leave as well now he's left within a few months of the new position. So like the United boys said yesterday but whether that's the case if he couldn't do the job or he's seen how terrible the job actually was.
00:03:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, but maybe that's a damning indictment for the state of United now. And so I just wanted to talk about that at first, because it's a ah objectively objective way for me to open the episode, but I just wanted to remind everyone that it could be worse.

Manchester City's Standings and Title Race

00:03:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And like I said, we've pulled over City's run of late, set lost seven from the last 10, eight off Liverpool with the injuries, et cetera. But we could try and put a positive spin on it. Should City win this weekend and Liverpool don't? That shrinks the gap to just five or six points.
00:03:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
with the Merseyside Derby as Liverpool's game in hand, that could cause them problems too. and Of course there's still Chelsea and Arsenal in the way but we've seen the latter crumble to City in recent years and it's still a consensus that it's too soon for Maresca's side. Am I being a bit too ambitious here?
00:04:16
Keelin
I think you're being very optimistic, and which admittedly is a nice change of tone for recent episodes, I will admit that. Yeah, um mean, Super James Tarkovsky to the rescue sounds great, and but whether it'll actually be the case or not, I'm not so sure.
00:04:33
Keelin
But yeah, I mean, listen, and Man City have given me no real reason to be optimistic lately. I'm trying very, very hard to see the end of the tunnel or the alleged light at the end of it. All I'm hoping for is January, to be honest, I've kind of accepted that we're going to be out of title contention by then.
00:04:53
Keelin
But if we can start to rebuild in January, get some of this crap out of the way and bring in some people who are semi-competent, we might still be in it only because of how competitive the league's been this year. That might actually save us if we're going to do anything. you know Like Liverpool, to their credit, and I said this on the crossover episode, they've been very good but I don't think they've blown anybody out of the water. I think they're looking really good because Arsenal and City have been so bad, which both of us have been. So if we can make it to January and make the right signings and get this thing back on track quickly, there's every chance the second half of the season could be a hell of a lot more joyous than the first.
00:05:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And to make City still in the race for the title by January, that of course starts on Sunday. So what type of reaction and do you expect? Maybe not expect with how the boys have played over the last month or so, but what do what reaction does City need to give on Sunday?
00:05:55
Keelin
Well they need to absolutely obliterate Man United and smash them into a billion pieces, which if we had Rodry, out of every conference we'd absolutely pants them.

Strategizing Against Manchester United

00:06:08
Keelin
Unfortunately we don't have Rodry, so I'm not confident of that at all. But in terms of the statement we need to make, we need to go out, we need to absolutely blow them off the map with an atomic bomb of a performance, that's what we need.
00:06:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
and City are used to scoring plenty of goals in this fixture. Could this be the perfect game to get get the scoring flowing again?
00:06:32
Keelin
In some ways, yes, but in some ways, no. I think if City are going to do anything, it's going to come down Man United's left-hand side because, you know, Luke Shaw, everybody thinks he's the best left-back in the league when he fits, which he never is. and So it really depends on what how Man United set up on their left-hand side. If they basically throw two paper clips together and Savini, who starts, then I'm a lot more confident.
00:07:00
Keelin
But to be honest, unfortunately, lately, the likes of Erlang Halland wouldn't be able to hit a bull in the ass with a banjo. And that makes me very, very concerned. But if there's ever going to be a game, you're praying it's this one.
00:07:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And how do you expect city to line up?
00:07:18
Keelin
Sergeant, say that again.
00:07:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
How do you expect city to line up to try and do just that?
00:07:24
Keelin
Well, I think it's going to be the pretty much the exact same lineup that we've seen in the last few games, which doesn't really give me much confidence at all. The only confidence I do get is, and again, I haven't seen any injury reports, so I don't know if this is possible or not, if Nathan Aquet is fit, please start him at left back, because that makes me feel a lot more confident than Josko Vario being on the left.
00:07:49
Keelin
and for the love of Maria herself if he's fit play manuela kanji at right back because i cannot take another game with kyle walker as my fallback i just cannot do it play jamais simpson pucey at right back if you have to but do not subject me to another kyle walker captain performance at right back or i might actually just lose my mind The midfield and the forward line basically picks itself. If Foudens fit, it's him, De Bruyne, maybe Mateo Kovacic is the sixth, which I still hate saying. And then Daku, Savino, Holland, hit them fast, hit them hard.
00:08:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we haven't seen that that those three all line up together for a little while. And it does feel like that that they are the three most dynamic forwards that City possess at the moment.
00:08:34
Keelin
and
00:08:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, still inconsistency from the from the two wide boys, despite the the obvious talent that they both possess. This would be the perfect time for, especially I think Savino, to step up and give give a big performance, really endear himself to the fans, to his new fans.
00:08:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that'll do for part one. When we come back, we'll look a little bit deeper into Man United and then look at the other fixtures from this weekend's Premier League.
00:09:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Manchester City Podcast on the Global Sports Podcast Network. and We're here for a Friday forecast and we're trying to keep the positive vibes or create the positive vibes at least, and looking ahead to the Manchester Derby. So we've talked about City, we've obviously talked about City in the crossover episode two, but now let's move on to yeah Man United. So what are you expecting from Reuben Amorim's team?
00:09:58
Keelin
What am I expecting from Man United? um Honestly, a kind of worse version of the Juventus game, if I'm honest. and We know with Man United under Ruben Amorim, they like this back three system with Sort of Amadiello and Masrawi as wing backs out wide. and Their front line is a little bit of Gurnacho, Rashford, and then Rasmus Hoyland if he spit. Usually it'll be that and Joshua Xerxes, they sort of interchange the number nine position. But yeah, I'm kind of expecting a lower standard of Juventus game, to be honest, where they try and absorb a lot of pressure and then hit with speed on the counter attack. and that That's really my expectation for Man United.
00:10:47
Keelin
And to be fair, they are, when they actually counterattack, they do have speed and they do have a threat there. So city are going to have to be very, very careful. and You know, they basically, they just have to not be themselves in any way. Change everything you are and everything you've done up until this point. Just be defensively competent. That's all you need to be.
00:11:11
Keelin
and then just pray that the attack finds itself again. and That's the key to beating this Man United team. But if you have Kyle Walker halfway between the fullback position and the halfway line, you're gonna be asking for trouble. So just try and have some common sense, approach this game with common sense, and hopefully you should be alright, because we need this win.
00:11:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah ah Yeah, when you put it like that, United's best aspects are counter-attacking and cities most vulnerable are the exact same. So does that mean that we should see the backline drop perhaps?
00:11:41
Keelin
when you reach kind them attack and
00:11:48
Keelin
Yes, 100% it does. and Because ah ah when we have Rodri fit, you can play a high backline because Rodri drops in, he acts as an auxiliary defender and he's as good as any of our defenders. So you can afford to play a high line where you push it further forward. When you have no legs and you have no speed and generally no defensive IQ either,
00:12:14
Keelin
A high line is not a good idea, especially against speed. If Man United were a slow team, by all means play a high line, I have no problem with that. But they do have genuine speed threats in that team. Rasmus Hoyland can run in behind with speed. Garnacho, annoying as he is, can run in behind with speed. Marcus Rashford, if he puts it together, can also run in behind. so The threat is very clear and it's very obvious. The question is whether you are competent enough to accommodate that threat and you should absolutely drop back. and It's a bit like the top limit dilemma. Do they continue to play a high line or do they drop back? With this city team 100% drop back 10 or 15 yards because you don't have the legs to play a high line and you probably won't until next summer.

Premier League Weekend Preview

00:13:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and without and without that player that can has the intelligence to stop the team's counter-attacks as well, that that that seems to be the the big the big mess. As we've been saying all season, I was just checking, we're recording this, at about 8 o'clock on the Thursday, so I've just checked the Man United score, and they were 1-0 down away to Victoria Pilsen with their Darby's ex-Darby player mattie Mate Vidra getting the goal, and but Rasmus Heulen scored twice, one with two minutes left for them to secure a 2-1 win.
00:13:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
So they might be a bit tired after that really difficult trip to that massive Czech team, but who do you think are their danger men or their most important players?
00:13:57
Keelin
Sorry, just say that again.
00:13:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I said some of them might be tired after the long and arduous trip to to the massive team in Czech, but who do you think are their most important or dangerous players?
00:14:10
Keelin
I think for this game, because he always has a very annoying habit of this, it's probably Marcus Rashford. You know, Rashford can be the worst player in the world and he'll probably score a hat-trick against us because of course, football works that way for some reason.
00:14:27
Keelin
I think Alejandro Garnacho could be another threat if he starts. Amad Diallo I could see being a problem as well just because of the speed. Hoyland could be a threat too again because he has the Holland profile he can do pretty similar things to Holland. But those are probably the big threats, probably the forward players because unlike pretty much anywhere else in their team, they do have speed and they do have an in-behind threat and if you completely write that off, you're just being dumb.
00:14:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, and we've seen it in full force in the Epic Cup final, of course, with Gunacho reaching. Obviously, it was a mistake by Ortega, but you know he got in behind and got his rewards for it, and Meinu played well as well. And Rashford tends to show up in the Manchester Darby's, I think, six goals he's got against City, so he will always be a danger even if he doesn't start.
00:15:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But i I am confident. I am confident. I think Citi will get the job done, especially at home. I'm going to press you for a score prediction, Keelan.
00:15:32
Keelin
Erm, I am gonna say 2-1 city and only because the heart only because I just don't have the heart to predict it ah ah points lost to Man United. It's just not in my DNA. I'm gonna say 2-1 and hope it stays that way.
00:15:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the worst, worst Man United team of your lifetime as well, by the way. So you get you absolutely cannot ever admit that City will reach those lows.
00:15:53
Keelin
basically Basically...
00:15:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I don't think they will. This is not a bottom half team. This is a title challenging team in a bit of transition at the moment. Let's keep in the positivity. That's what I'm saying. Come on, come on the voice. And that'll do for our extra little preview of the Manchester Derby. When we come back, we'll have a look at some of the other fixtures in the Premier League.
00:16:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Manchester City Podcast on the Global Sports Podcast Network. So let's have a look at some of the other fixtures around the Premier League. There's probably no place to start other than League Leaders Liverpool. They are at home to Fulham, who are in 10th, but are only four points away from City and 4th in that really, really tight mid-table, mid-upper table this year. Do you think Liverpool are going to run away with this one, Keeler?
00:17:18
Keelin
Yeah, I think so. um the moment, Liverpool are just too good and too strong for any challenge that's in front of them. Expect Liverpool to run out comfortable winners in this one.
00:17:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah Mo Salah in particular is rolling back the years, he's as good as he's ever looked. I think he's top of the goal scoring and the assist chart in the Premier League at the moment, scoring in the Champions League for fun as well.
00:17:41
Keelin
play
00:17:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
What a player, unbelievable player. It would be a shame for not not for Man City or any other rival team of course but for football and Premier League fans if you were to leave if you were to leave and go elsewhere this summer but yeah hopefully you can slow down in City you can catch up but we're next we're going to move to Arsenal vs Everton and Everton lost 4-0 to Man United a couple of weeks ago but then got their own 4-0 win after that Arsenal are in good form at the moment too and beaten in the last six in the Premier League and they did draw last time out but they'd won three in a row before that just coming off the back of another Champions League win against Monaco too. How do you see this one going at the Emirates, Keelan?
00:18:28
Keelin
Yeah, a bit of a banana peel fixture for Arsenal in recent years. Everton are a weird team because they're not great, but they always have a weird sting in their tail. That being said, Arsenal should be far too strong for them. I'm going to say 3-1 Arsenal.
00:18:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
3-1 Arsenal, yeah I see someone similar there. In a game that should be a bit closer than that we have a massive one for for um the other end of the table as Wolves host Ipswich, Gary O'Neill under a lot of pressure at the moment but it seems that he will get the chance to turn it around Ipswich had a bright start to the league but they've lost the last three, still windless at home it does look like the squad is a bit thin at this level. Massive six point tequila, how do you see this one?
00:19:20
Keelin
I mean, this is, this is your textbook six pointer right here. You know, you have two teams that have just, I mean, I expected Ipswich to struggle. That's unfair, but wolves have just been absolutely treading water since the beginning of the season. It's absolutely remarkable how bad they've been.
00:19:38
Keelin
I don't know, I've got to be honest, I'm leaning towards an Ipswich win. Bold as that is, I am seeing that. I'm going to say 2-1 Ipswich, O'Mari Hutchinson and Liam Dallapkin on the scoreboard.
00:19:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, put your money where your mouth is. We've got goal scorers as well.
00:19:57
Keelin
Yeah, I'm feeling the check in my face.
00:19:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Tarpon and a sess from the Daily Man City team. And that's just because...

Forest vs. Villa and Other Key Matches

00:20:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we love Liam Delaf, don't we? How could you not? He's been he's been brilliant for them.
00:20:05
Keelin
Oh, bring it back. january Bring it back. I need him.
00:20:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, do you know what? He actually would be decent backup, wouldn't he? Because there's not really anyone else that can do it at the moment. Yeah, that and enough of City's poor transfer dealings over the past few years. And and let's talk about Newcastle versus Leicester. Newcastle are in 12th, winless in the last four in the Premier League. They give Liverpool a hell of a good goal though last week.
00:20:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And maybe the week before, sorry, no, it was last week, wasn't it? There was the last Premier League games in that great three-all. There's definitely a lot of quality in that team, even if the squad can look a bit thin at times. And with Leicester, got a win and a draw from Roode Van Astroy's first two games, which is brilliant for them after sacking Steve Cooper. Where do you think this one goes, Keelan?
00:20:58
Keelin
Yeah, I think the points stay in townside here. and like i do I like Leicester and I have a very soft spot for them, obviously, because of 2016, but I think this Newcastle team is just too strong. You mentioned the three-old draw with Liverpool. They are such an attackingly dangerous team, Newcastle, and I think they're just going to have too much firepower for Leicester. I think three-nil Newcastle.
00:21:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
3-0 Newcastle. Next we have, it's a bit of a Derby weekend actually, so you've got Forest and Villa, nice East Midlands Derby, both teams fifth and sixth in the league as things stand on, both on 25 points.
00:21:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
both at Forest in particular surprised a lot of people with their excellent start to the season and Villa have done well to win their last two after going winless in the seven before and of course they're doing brilliant in the Champions League as well. This is a nicely poised little derby this, how do you see it going?
00:22:01
Keelin
tell you what, the Midlands are on top of the moment. you know They are absolutely loving life at the moment in that part of England. and Yeah, it's a great game. It's always a really, really good game whenever these two teams meet. I think Aston Villa should have too much for them, though. and you know They have a lot of quality. They've had some mixed form recently. And as much as I like Nottingham Forest, I just think they're too inconsistent when it comes to defending. I think Tuna, Aston Villa,
00:22:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Villa look really good at the moment and Forest will be without first choice left back, Moreno as well because he's on loan from Aston Villa, and which means they'll probably be playing Nico Williams, who I think is a great player on the ball, but if he's up against Morgan Rodgers, Leon Bailey, know these type of really good direct wingers,
00:22:38
Keelin
Yeah.
00:22:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
he could have a tough game in store. Next we go to another Derby, maybe not as local as some other Derbys, but these two sets of fans definitely treat it as such. It's Brighton versus Palace. Brighton have been brilliant themselves at at times this season.
00:23:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, they've gone winless in the last three in the Premier League, but every one of the six draws they've had so far this season, they could feel hard done by not actually getting all three points. They're in seventh position, one point below Villa and Forest.
00:23:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And I really like to look at them this year. Crystal Palace, contrastly, have not had ah ah the same season. Saved their best performance of the campaign for against City, of course they did. they're just outside the relegation zone as things stand in 17th, 13 points, four points clear of Ipswich. So that draw last week and the win the week beforehand, doing wonders for them. And they're unbeaten in four in the league and they're starting to look up instead of down at the moment, Keelan.
00:23:51
Keelin
Yeah, the Battle of the Birds. and This song is always a good one. The Eagles against the Seagulls. Yeah, it's a good game. Obviously, Palace made our lives even more miserable last weekend, so cheers for that Palace. Always appreciate that. And and yeah, i think I think it's going to be a good game.
00:24:11
Keelin
i like I do like Brighton though, I think they're starting to figure things out and they're starting to put it together and I think that's going to continue here against Crystal Palace. I'm going to say 3-1 to Brighton.
00:24:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
3-1 Brighton. At least they didn't make it as miserable as Brighton did. Next we have Southampton vs Spurs. Southampton of course, rock bottom of the Premier League table. Five points and just one win after 15 games.
00:24:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
not not looking good for them and a lot of managers have had a lot to say about Russell Martin and and how well he gets his teams playing but five points from 15 games says otherwise and Spurs desperately need a win themselves. They've lost the last two, the fans have started to turn on Anjpasta Korgbloo, they absolutely need a big performance here Keeling.
00:25:04
Keelin
I'll be honest, this this is exactly the kind of game I could see Tottenham losing, you know, beat just based on how up and down they are. and But listen, and at the end of the day, Southampton are much like their position in the country. They're very much at the foot of the table as well. I think Tottenham should have far too much for them. It should be a comfortable Tottenham win, but with Tottenham, nothing's ever comfortable. I'm going to say three to Tottenham. I think they nearly blow it but they just about hang on.
00:25:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, I like that. ah ah Spurs, and it I totally agree that it's the type of game that they would lose. They, of course, gave Ipswich their only win of the season so far. They give Palace what was at the time their only win of the season so far. So they they are susceptible to dropping points in these games. so and so I'm going to need to start picking up these points so it's nicely poised there too. Next we go to London Derby and it's Chelsea at home against Brentford. Brentford with the best home form in the league but the worst away form in the league. Funny how a team like this always crops up every year. Chelsea of course are absolutely flying at the moment. Four league wins in a row, scoring goals for fun,
00:26:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've scored the most in the league, even their kind of second team players are banging them in as well. I can't see anything other than the Chelsea win here, Keelan, do you agree?
00:26:33
Keelin
I do agree. yeah i don't I don't see anything other than the Chelsea win here. you know The Stamford Bridge juggernaut is firmly rolling at the moment and they should i and they should have far too much here for Brentford. I'm going to say 4-0 Chelsea.
00:26:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
4-0 and they're only four points off Liverpool albeit with a game more played but this it could be on for them it could be on for them a lot of people are saying it might be too soon for Chelsea of course they've got a very young team and a new manager but the way they're playing they look they look as good as Liverpool at the moment in my eyes finally we have Bournemouth versus West Ham West Ham as we mentioned every time that they are brought up. We all got it wrong about them this year. I still see glimpses of life in there. I really do. but
00:27:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
they're not consistent over any 90 minutes that they've played this year and I'm not confident they would be in any 90 minutes they will play. They did win last time out but before that they would win less in a little while. Lopategi right under the cosh there, they can't seem to keep a main striker fit or in the team. i Obviously thoughts and prayers to Michal Antonio, that's not quite what I was mentioning but I hope he's doing all right.
00:27:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
seemingly is. But flipping over to Bournemouth and they are one of the former teams of the league at the moment. They've won three in a row. and They're actually second for expected goal difference in the whole league as well.
