Seth Godin’s quote; ‘When you speak to everyone, you speak to noone’ really resonates with me.’

In this episode I share my experience of shifting from selling on behalf of many other brands to going back to selling just my own brand and the difference that has made to writing my marketing material, which was highlighted when writing the text for my Mother’s Day promo.

00:00:08
Speaker
I'm Marie Nicole and I'm devoted to combining beauty, uniqueness and connection in everyday living experiences. As a creative professional and Dharma coach, I help people connect to the truth of who they are and facilitate them in embodying their uniqueness. It is my hope in this podcast that I inspire you to live your life on your terms and earn your income through being uniquely you.
00:00:33
Speaker
After all, it's the unique thread that we each contribute to the collective tapestry that creates the whole.

Understanding and Identifying Your Target Audience

00:00:49
Speaker
You've likely heard about the importance of knowing your target audience, but maybe you haven't given it much thought beyond the fact that your product and service is for everyone, right? Well, is it really?
00:01:01
Speaker
Seth Godin's quote, when you speak to everyone, you speak to no one, really resonates with me. So let's unpack that a little. Would it really serve the 80 year old man who's achieved all that he set out to achieve in his lifetime and is now enjoying his sunset years by helping the younger generation reach their goals? Would he be someone who would be in your target audience?
00:01:25
Speaker
Or is the 12-year-old girl navigating her way through puberty the target audience of someone who offers a solution for women dealing with menopause? These are two very extreme examples, but you'd be surprised how often as a business coach I've had people describe their target audience in broad general terms, as though everyone and anyone is a potential customer. But what makes a brand a strong brand?
00:01:55
Speaker
is talking in specific terms to a specific audience. While you may pick up customers and clients on either side of that specific audience, tightening your message to meet the needs of the person you are solving the problem for delivers a much clearer message.

Personal Marketing Insights and Audience Connection

00:02:12
Speaker
As much as I miss aspects of having my bricks and mortar store selling on behalf of other makers and designers, I had a realization last week that hit me like a slap in the face.
00:02:24
Speaker
This was brought home when I wrote a post promoting Mother's Day gift ideas. Now, prior to opening Creators Nest, all of my marketing material was based around my own artisanal brand and told the story of a travelling trader rescuing and repurposing the old and discarded to create statement pieces for everyday living experiences. The target customer I had in mind was someone who doesn't conform to trends, who owns their own creativity,
00:02:52
Speaker
uniqueness and wears it as a badge of honour. I still had that target audience as my key target audience for Creators Nest but must admit that there were times when writing my marketing material that I was not sure if I was representing the other brands as well under my target audience umbrella and vice versa. So I would dilute my message down to a more generic description because of that.
00:03:20
Speaker
Writing this Mother's Day promo text, however, was like someone had removed the great boulder I was carrying on my back, which I became so used to cutting around I didn't even really notice it was there until someone removed it. And this is what flowed out of me when I had the freedom to express myself, my brand, and speak to my target audience directly.

Defining the Ideal Audience for a Brand

00:03:45
Speaker
Mother to wild, wise woman.
00:03:48
Speaker
gift ideas for the mother who is, not trying to pass off as a sister to her younglings, instead owns her age, stage and wild woman archetype. Doesn't attempt to keep up with trends, colours or patterns of the season, instead stands in her truth, embraces her uniqueness, experience, wisdom, connection and embodies the essence of who she is. Doesn't need a man to complete her,
00:04:15
Speaker
but welcomes in one who meets her Shakti with his Shiva, a man connected to the God within him that celebrates the goddess within her. Doesn't desire a nip, a tuck, or a lift because she's proud of the body that brought her younglings into this world, then nurtured them through childhood. Isn't trying to hide her silver locks instead wears her graying hair with pride because it shows the wisdom gained through all the trials and tribulations
00:04:44
Speaker
She's overcome to stand before you with potent medicine so deep in her bones she's ready to share it with you as you head down your path of the unknown too. Hasn't lost her identity through motherhood. Being a mother is what she's most proud of but she's also an example to her younglings that her gifts and talents are for sharing with the rest of the world too.
00:05:11
Speaker
Suppressing her sensuality because of her matriarchy isn't her practice, because she's divinely feminine and the essence of her creativity resides within her womb. She does, however, live in connection with nature.
00:05:25
Speaker
makes conscious sustainable choices because she wishes to leave this earth as beautiful a place if not more so for the generations to follow. Plus she's not here to compete with others, instead encourages, supports and enjoys witnessing their wings grow so she and they can soar alongside each other. Now I know this is not going to connect with every mother out there but I'm not here to serve every mother.

The Importance of Quality Connections

00:05:55
Speaker
I also know that I will lose followers on my creator's nest feed as I start tightening my messaging to truly suit my brand. But that's okay. I know I'll pick up more aligned followers who do resonate with my brand. And I'm a big believer in quality over quantity.
00:06:14
Speaker
in all areas of life and business. So I see no value in standing in the middle of a football stadium shouting out my message to an arena audience made up of people misaligned with my brand. I would much rather sit in an intimate gathering where my target audience is indulging in their passion and speak directly with them on how what I offer will truly serve them. When you try to be everything to everyone,
00:06:43
Speaker
you end up being nothing to no one. So really taking time to understand who you wish to serve, where you will meet those potential clients and customers is a much more pleasurable experience with a much greater return on investment.
