Introduction and Podcast Overview

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everybody and welcome to the Daily Chelsea Podcast. It is of course Tactics Tuesday and I am joined by the marvellous Matt to help run down Enda Mareska's tactics with me. Matt, how are you doing?
00:00:22
Matt
Yeah, really well. Thanks, Jake. um Obviously, great to be here as always. And it's not just chosen tactics we got discussed today because there's been some other juicy news, hasn't there?
00:00:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100 percent. And um of course, it's a bit more a bit more relevant for us, obviously, as our our next Premier League opponent and ah is is who you is su you're talking about, I believe.
00:00:38
Matt
o
00:00:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is that is that the sort of news or have I missed something?
00:00:44
Matt
No, no, you're on the right track, Jake.
00:00:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, you're on the right track.
00:00:45
Matt
You got my drift.
00:00:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, well, we so we'll start off today. Obviously, we'll move on to the moving onto to the tactics, you know, sort of employed but against Newcastle on Sunday and also discuss what we're looking at for the game on Wednesday as

Eric Ten Hag's Sacking Discussion

00:00:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
well. But of course, we found out about one o'clock today that Eric Tenharg has been sacked as a Manchester United manager.
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Something I think a lot of people maybe saw coming, you know, I think it was it was going to happen at some point, but maybe a bit unexpected to happen at this point you know I think it would have been you know maybe an international break sort of thing especially if they're you know looking to make such a big change you know mid-season look for probably and they want up and you know a prominent name and so and what we've seen in the last couple of hours Matt is that they're possibly looking at Amorim from from sporting who is someone that Chelsea fans know as well because obviously there's a lot of links between us and him as well
00:01:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, I mean, we'll, we'll move on to to the implications for Sunday in a minute, but what do you think about, about 10 hark, you know, the finally being sacked of an United and what do you think about then possibly get an Amorim as well as it's a big name.
00:01:52
Matt
It is a big name. I mean, on just on 10 Harg, I'm really sad to see him go. He was so good for us. He was so good for for the league, you know, just slowly crumbling Man United into a dim-witted, slow-burning, nothing

Manchester United's Transfer Decisions

00:02:09
Matt
machine. Just, you know, that's that's what they are at the moment.
00:02:12
Matt
um Very, very questionable signings. You know, he spent I think just over 560 million pounds, 564 to be exact. And you think about that and you think about the abuse um and the narrative that the media portray Chelsea with the amount we've spent. And yes, we've spent more than that, but I think we've actually spent well. um I think that's always been the thing for me as a fan is that Football's crazy money. It's monopoly money. You know, the media can make so much out of how much club spends, but you've got to spend it well, at least. And, you know, Casamiro, 70 million for a guy on his last legs. That is bad business. um And, you know, Hoyland's coming in in as well. 72 million for him. He looks like he's got a lot of promise, but he just has not got going.
00:03:03
Matt
And then, I guess just to round it off, amongst a host of bad transfers, it's that boy Antony. That Antony boy wonder. I think 86 million they signed him for, and that was a real, real desperate signing. It almost reminds me of when, man, you signed Fellaini under Moise, and not how desperate that was, um because um Just because the reports for with Antony is that their scouts really valued him about 25 million.
00:03:31
Matt
um So where's that 60 million difference come from?
00:03:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:34
Matt
That's just absolutely ridiculous. And yeah, all of them have just let Tenharg down. But I think more than anyone is Tenharg's let himself down more. He's just caused rife with Ronaldo, with Sancho. um And it's quite ironic is that in pretty much every interview, which has been most clear this season is he keeps saying, well, just stick to the plan, stick to the plan, stick to the plan.
00:04:00
Matt
But no one really knows what this plan is, because no one really knows what their tactics are, what their style of play is.
00:04:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:07
Matt
And ultimately, I think they've just built bought bad players time and timer again, under Tenharg. And now finally, he's he's had to go because of it.
00:04:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah it's a lot of people could see it happening but i i wonder if I wonder how different the situation might have been you know if Ineos hadn't come in at the point they did and that sort of thing but for me it just you know proves another point that you know you can have like a very general sort of plan and you can you know you know that you know it's going to take you two or three seasons to build up but at the end of the day when you're at a club like when United, Chelsea Arsenal, Liverpool, all these clubs, you need you need to be bringing in results from, you know, very early on. There's ah there's a bit of leeway, you know, we we saw it with us as well, you know, Graham Potter got a bit of leeway, Pochtino got a bit more than a little bit of leeway, but and it's, yeah, you need to be bringing in results and I think obviously Man United, if we if we look at the Premier League table now, it's it's
00:05:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
really bad reading for them. They sit 14th which you know in so in terms of how they could turn their season around you know they could do it and I think this is probably the point where they where they had to maybe make a change because they're getting too far

Strategic Changes for Manchester United

00:05:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
adrift. They're seven points off of the top four currently um but ah you know the worrying thing is is they they do sit 14th and they're at the same amount of points off the top four as they are the bottom three so for you know a couple Manchester United stature that's you know maybe it may be a sackable offense but I think you know one of the things I was reading today as well was that a lot of people expected Man United to either make a change after the Chelsea game or possibly at the international break um it seems they pulled the trigger early on this and
00:05:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
The reason could be is that, you know, they've they've sort of realized they need they need another manager of of really good quality. And that's why they're possibly looking at it and In terms of the implications for Sunday, Matt, and there's maybe a slight chance, you know, you know it's only you knows on Monday today, but, you know, things might change throughout the week. Amorim could be on the touchline of Man United. It might be someone else completely.
00:06:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But as it stands, it will be Rude Vannisteroy. And, you know, X-Man United Legends taking over at Man United for his first game, you know, it's that's not just the normal new manager bounce or a new and ah normal interim manager bounce. That's something a bit special. Do you think this is going to really affect the game on Sunday?
00:06:30
Matt
Annoyingly, I've got a little gut feeling that it will um I think before the news of ten hard getting sacked I was very confident that we were gonna go there and get a win just because of United's run a form especially because they lost 2-1 to West Ham on the weekend and We're in great form and we've actually got a plan and we've got tactics. We've got great players to switch in and out if need be but I think The united fans have just given up on tenharg and they were bored with him. They didn't like him But they absolutely love rude van islery. So I think they're going to be the 12th man for the united Uh this weekend, uh when we play them which will definitely affect the referee like it did when we played liverpool I think um, there's going to be some dubious refereeing. Um Coming up this weekend, which of course we'll discuss more later in the week as we get closer with the crossover and forecast but
00:07:25
Matt
I do think it's going to be a bit of an issue. And if, you know, United's plan is to get Ruben Amorim in, I think that'll be a fantastic appointment for them. But it probably won't happen until the international breakout earliest, I don't think. And, you know, Amorin has been great. He got supporting to their first league title in 19 years in the 2021 season. And he's just been able to build up like a really strong, you know, sort of defensive so so solidity.
00:07:53
Matt
a lot of effective goal-oriented attacks with with sporting. And so it would be really exciting for United fans to get Amaro in. um Obviously, like you said, we did so look at him before going in for Maresco, but, you know, with like with Maresco and what he brings. And at the moment, I definitely think he's been the the right choice for us. I mean, ironically, with Eric Tenhag is that he actually had a high win percentage um of about 59.1 percent, um which is pretty high for a manager.
00:08:20
Matt
But if someone said that to you, you just wouldn't believe it because all we can really remember is, you know, I'm losing quite a lot. um They they just, um you know, were so poor last season getting at eighth, but.
00:08:36
Matt
the The funny thing is as well is that what I really hope is that we do beat them on the weekend and then Lester and Everton win, which means United moved down to 16th. So they'd be even closer to the bottom three. We can dream, we can dream, ah but we'll see.

Chelsea's Tactical Victory

00:08:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, the thing for me I think is, you know, one of the big strong points we've seen from Mariska so far is his tactics. And I don't think that if it is rude on the touchline, I don't think he will change too much. But we can't really prepare too much tactically for a rude vanish draw on a touchline. You know what I mean? I think we've done well with sort of squashing the, you know, the 12th male element in some of our away games so far. So I'm hopeful that we were able to, you know, at least pull a result regardless of that. But I think tactically it's going to be a very a weird week for Mareska to prepare for.
00:09:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not that he'll be prepared preparing for that all week as of course, you know, Chelsea are currently training for their game on Wednesday against Newcastle. and We will discuss tactics and the such from the Sunday game and also discuss what we're expecting for the Wednesday game just after this break.
00:09:35
Matt

and we are back on the Daily Chelsea Podcast. Yes, we are discussing, well, we've just discussed the major news of the week so far, it's only Monday, of course, but Eric Tenharg, being sacked in Manchester United, who knows, we may be discussing an appointment for them later in the week. But moving on to, of course, this is the Daily Chelsea Podcast, let's discuss Chelsea. um A fantastic win on Sunday, Matt. Just some fantastic performances and you know, i ah we were talking in our chat on Sunday I wanted to get home and then have say a couple of opinions but um what I was you know quite interested in or I thought we we did really well was just you you know tactically the way we lined up and the way some of the players performed and performed their roles to a tee was absolutely fantastic and plus you know we had certain things like colp armor just you know just making the
00:11:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
the pass from Karl Palmer to Pedro Netto for that that goal was absolutely incredible. I don't think i've seen as one of duffing that's one of the best passes I've seen live just in football. It was so good.

Chelsea vs. Newcastle Tactical Analysis

00:11:15
Matt
Oh, I bet.
00:11:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Way on it.
00:11:16
Matt
Scandalous stuff.
00:11:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fantastic.
00:11:17
Matt
Absolutely outrageous.
00:11:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah incredible Incredible. But besides that Matt, so we saw us sort of line up in basically the exact same way that we did versus Liverpool. ah couple of players had a couple of roles that were changed, however, but for most most of our players we saw what we expected. and It looked a bit like Gusto was sort of pushing up and again sort of maybe using the eight role, you know, knowing that he had sort of a casino to cover the space behind him as well, which had a good, had so sort of limited ah Newcastle's wingers quite well, I think, you know, Harvey Barnes I think he's just a very good player so he got a few more chances than what I would have liked. Amaron I don't think really made too much of an to impact besides one shot that you had in the box but went far wide. um It was a game I think where the fullbacks did really really well for us and that's like that's something we're starting to see every sort of game now. and What did you think of Hamareska sort of set up for this one tactically? and
00:12:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh have Have we got some sort of world-class tactical manager? Because i because and ah it's it's a big question because you know ah but honestly, I'm seeing him set up in incredible ways for every game. And I've not really seen him encounter a situation where he's failed tactically. you know and so what What did you think of that?
00:12:31
Matt
Yeah, absolutely, I mean with the lineup still slightly surprised surprised that um gusto and james were the the fullbacks more surprised that james was at left back, um as opposed to to right back this game, but You know again, I think that just shows the the confidence mariska has in his tinkering and with his tactics that he's willing to try new things in important games and And really, yeah um with with gusto, you know, so if he's so fluid, ah like we saw um firsthand against Liverpool, he's so willing to to drop into that eight position or get up high um and really stretch the opposition. and That's what, you know, um whoever's on the right back, whether it's gusto or James, they do so, so well. um You know, we really closed up the and the midfield very well with Lavia and Carcedo and
00:13:23
Matt
LaVia pushed up um when necessary and then supported Coseto in transition as well. um I think that really has to be our starting pair in the midfield going forward. um I think the most effective thing is that we just really ah played to to Newcastle's higher line and and breaking that with our pace.
00:13:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it is great to see you.
00:13:41
Matt
That's the main thing that we used um most notably with Cole Palmer's pass to Neto, um but also um for for For Palmer's goal that was ruled offside, Jackson very nicely receives the ball, turns and then just plays Palmer in straight away. um And so you know we talk about Jackson's pace and his creativity um and just setting other players up. but um he's got He's got an eye for for for a good pass as well going going forward.
00:14:07
Matt
um So, yeah, I

Chelsea's Defensive Setup Evaluation

00:14:11
Matt
think that was the main thing. I do think the only slight negative was, you know, Rhys James being on the left, you you have the defensive capabilities, but then you do actually lose a lot of his amazingness going forward.
00:14:24
Matt
um Because he's definitely right footed He's very right footed and we didn't really see him bumping up down down that left wing um to to stretch the the opponent in as in in Newcastle in a On the on the other side as much as you know, Netta was really pushing down there um and so I you know sort of that that sort of area i'm less uh convinced by um but you know sort of endo scott his um his genius at hand i thought everyone played their their part to a tee uh again i do just think we need to have a look at the man in between the sticks and think about what can we do with him um i'm not really sure who we can do and and play to replace him or who we can buy to replace him but um as the season goes on um i'm getting less and less convinced by sanchez
00:15:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100 percent. I agree with you and I really wanted to I wanted to back Sanchez this season. You know, I think he has shown quality like it's not like he's I can maybe understand why people are taking risks on him and why he's sort of at this level because he does show quality. I just think it's it's the lapse in concentration or his lapses in quality that are going to probably a cost him a career at the top level, really.
00:15:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I agree with you. We need we we need to look at our goalkeeper situation. It's probably the most urgent thing. Now, I think, i think you know, a few games ago or the start of the season, you'd probably say that Stryker was probably the most urgent thing, but now it really has turned into the goalkeeper situation as well.
00:15:54
Matt
Mm hmm.
00:15:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Matt, I'd like to ask you a question on Wesley Fafana. I know we're talking more tactically here, but he he's picked up quite a few yellow cards this season. from From the people who are sat around me, they're starting to get quite frustrated with Fafana and Excuse me, and I think that that might be because Carl Will was now starting to show some really good quality. So maybe, you know, i in my opinion, there might be just such a difference in quality that people are starting to get frustrated with Afana. But a lot of fans around me were frustrated with him on Sunday. And I think, you know, sort of the most the the easiest tackles to give away and stuff like that was sort of seems to be for final or sometimes his position was a bit off.
00:16:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
and What do you think of him at the moment? Do you think that you know maybe we should be giving another centre back a chance? Do you think maybe we should be looking to sign the another centre back potentially, or not too far off January? Or should he be getting you know quite a long run than this team? you know yet He had quite a long injury as well.
00:16:49
Matt
I think we've still got it back in for the time being because this is the only real time, even though we've signed him two seasons ago, that we're actually getting to see a run of solids, games with him and and some consistency. So I think the positional areas and and everything like that that, that is one of the things that we don't necessarily point out, which does come with match fitness and just general confidence. and I do think being out for so long would have knocked his confidence and just his general gameplay to an extent. And it's only by, you know, consistently playing that he's going to get that back completely. So I would still back him for the time being just because I don't think any of our replacements in terms of Badia Shilei, Tassasi and Tosin
00:17:36
Matt
are quite as good technically as him, and or also as as fast as him, you know, sort of maybe arguably a disaster. He's close to that, but he's got more of a of a disaster touch we it within him um that I wouldn't really want to risk at this stage.

Investment in Chelsea's Defense

00:17:52
Matt
um Also, for Fauna and Coldwell, I think they're drawing up quite ah um a decent chemistry between one another. And at the moment, Coldwell, like you say, is really stepping up and and being a strong leader there.
00:18:05
Matt
i I can't, ah in Dreamworld, you know, absolutely, I think we should go in for another sense back to just replace, but ah not necessarily replace Vafana, but um sort of put more pressure on him um of a more like-for-like, defended Vafana is, and and the qualities that he has, just because Fafana, there's a reason why we spent so much money on him. We did buy him for $70 million from Lester, which is a huge, huge fee, um considering Lester have now been relegated and then come back up from the prem. That's a huge um load of cash to to spend on him. And so we can't um just forgo that. We've made a lot of investment that we need to now kind of recoup.
00:18:45
Matt
um So, but yeah, his positioning is tricky and it's his own fault really when, you know, he got booked so early on in the game and 11 minutes gone. And that just puts a lot of pressure on him. And, you know, whenever a central defender does get booked earlier on the game, I think it does somewhat put the team at a slight nervousness because that's the last line of defense before the goalie. And we don't have that much faith in the goalie at the moment. And so there's almost a feeling that would Chelsea that if the opposition can break the lines and just get past the defender, the center backs, then it's almost a certain goal. So it's definitely an error to be aware of, but I think there's enough there to keep for the goods. The only way that I really see another defender coming in is if we goods, if we, if we did sell either to Sasi or Badia Shilei, or someone comes in for Trevor Chalaba when he's back in the summer.
00:19:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah, 100%. I think it's, I mean, just just before we go to it right a break, a break, Matt, and we start discussing, obviously, in the game in two days' time against the same team. um One of the interesting interesting things to me in this game was that um the most passes distributed between players, between, and between players was between Gusto, James, Neto and Madaweike.
00:19:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Which obviously shows that we're using obviously like wide players quite a lot um to sort of in our in our build-up play Which I think we can see anyway and But the person who had the least passes in the game was Nicholas Jackson with 12 only 12 passes in the game and But also got a goal just just quickly before we go to the break What have you thought of sort of Jackson's sort of flexibility because he wasn't he wasn't really on the ball too much in this game But he was sort of making a nooses of himself and when he was on the ball, you know He he nearly had to assist and he had a goal as well um In other games, he's, you know, making about 50 passes and he's constantly on the ball sort of doing a false nine style. um What have you thought about

Nicholas Jackson's Impact as a Striker

00:20:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jackson's flexibility? Do you think he's really coming into his own now?
00:20:41
Matt
I absolutely think so, you know, he's clearly growing confidence He's clearly had a bit of a chip on his shoulder from the start of the season when players ex-Chelsea players like John Obi McEl Have been constantly berating him saying he's just not at the standard that we need him to be um That you know Chelsea really need like a world-class striker and he's just not a drug but he's not a Diego Costa all of this um ah All of this talk which you know, whether he's doing it for views and to boost his own channel or whether it's to really sort of ri rile the players up and get at Chelsea players and the boards, who knows. But I think the iron ironic thing is, is that Jackson scored his 20th Premier League goal against Newcastle on the weekend. And it only took him 44 games to do so. And that's better than Crespo, Good Johnson, Vialy, Abraham and Didier Drogba.
00:21:35
Matt
So if we're actually concurring him like for like, he's doing better than Drugba. And I think the problem is, is that so many Chelsea fans, us included, we have this huge regard for Drugba, rightfully so. And we can be quick to forget that when he had his first season or first couple of seasons, he was a little bit slow, like to to really get to grips with the Premier League, um albeit we won the Premier League in his first two seasons that he was with us.
00:22:02
Matt
um So I think that's where the glazing and and the start comparisons, you know, sort of really are so vast. um And yes, you know, so he didn't. There's quite a few chances that you would expect him to put away last season. But I think that's the difference that we saw against Newcastle is that he got a chance, which is a simple chance, and he put it away. And that's really what we want from our strikers. You know, when they score a bicycle kick or a 30-yard wowser, that's always great.
00:22:28
Matt
But that's every, you know, maybe 10 games at best. What we want to see is just consistent tap ins, scoring goals in the box, headers in the box. You know, we just want to see that from our striker. And it's clear with Jackson that he's all about the team. You know, whatever Mariska asked us him, he's willing to do that do that. Whether it's dropping in and having a lot of touch touches on the ball or whether it's just almost being hard and desk in terms of just being really clinical, but not having many touches on the ball.
00:22:57
Matt
um he's happy to do that as well and I think it's great because last season he was fighting over Palmer and Madaweke for a penalty whereas now I think he's just really happy to be on the pitch and so that's credit to Maruska actually I think for for changing his mindset and getting everyone to just focus on the team and winning as a team.
00:23:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I really agree with you there. And it's, it's really great because obviously I think, you know, ah in some of the rooms in the summer where that we would maybe not signing a striker to allow Jackson to develop. And at least that seems to be coming into fruition. You know, we're really seeing a developing Nicholas Jackson, which is fantastic for Chelsea fans. and Well, we've just discussed the 2-1 result against Newcastle. We're going to go for a quick break and then we will discuss our Wednesday game in two days time um against them as well. I'll be back shortly.

season so far yet where obviously we've had cup games in the week but with no disrespect to any of our opponents those those were teams we could you know swap the whole team out and give you a few more players a chance you know in those games this although it's only the efl cup or you know a lot of people you know what obviously want to try and win that competition um do you think we're gonna see a lot of players you know making the do you think a lot we're gonna be seeing 11 different players from sunday or Is it more, we we'll get Macy, you know, Macy Gusto, maybe Casado, possibly Neto or someone like that, you know, start to give it a bit more of a bit more influence from the team, you know.
00:25:24
Matt
I think we're actually we'll actually see 11 changes. I think we'll see a very similar lineup to what we saw against Penathon Icos a week ago. But I think we'll have a very, very strong bench in the likes of having Jackson, Palmer,
00:25:39
Matt
Netto all on the bench um and more, you know, even Cole Will. um A lot of those players didn't travel to Panathinaikos for the Europa game. But I think because, you know, this is know a way game in still in England, the journey is not too far.
00:25:54
Matt
And absolutely, Mariska, like every manager, they'd love to win this trophy just because it's a bit of a landmark. It's a bit of a statement. And no one's going to, you know, sort of
00:26:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:26:05
Matt
be crying if if we you know sort of go out but as in we would expect her to win because we've just beaten Newcastle on the weekend in the prem so i think we would be in our rights to to expect to to beat them in the in the cup as well they only just beat Wimbledon in the cup to progress to this round as well it was a very tame 1-0 win My brother actually went to to support Wimbledon and went to the stadium and he said that the crowd were horrendous. And I'm not really surprised because the the players didn't really give them much to shout about. and They played a very weakened side and they even had to bring Gordon on.
00:26:39
Matt
with about half an hour to go in that game, just to make sure that they, or, you know, sort of press further and try and get another goal just to make the game secure. Alas, they only needed one in that game, but um I do expect ah Newcastle to try and put out a stronger team than they did against us in the Premier League for this, because I think Eddie Howe, he's he knows what's at stake really for Newcastle and for that club,
00:27:05
Matt
And for that city, so they really long for a trophy as soon as possible. They got close in the League Cup final against United a couple of seasons ago, but I think he he wants to try and win something with Newcastle before he leaves, if he does leave, and potentially even goes for the United job. We never know. um But yeah, absolutely. I see 11 changes for Chelsea. I do think we'll win comfortably and we'll have that strong bench if anything goes really, really poorly poorly for us in the game.
00:27:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair enough. Yeah, I don't know if I totally agree with you on on on a whole 11 changes. I think maybe there may be a couple of players who who play in this one and then maybe miss out on Sunday as well.
00:27:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know Not that I'm saying they maybe play free games in a week.
00:27:46
Matt
Bye.
00:27:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Just because it there may be a couple of you know different tactical elements. I mean, let me let me ask you this as well

Newcastle's EFL Cup Strategy

00:27:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Matt. Do you do you think Newcastle are gonna play a very similar team or do you think there'll be a few?
00:27:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know Obviously we saw Amara start on Sunday rather than Gordon. Do you think that's because he's he's thinking about the Wednesday fixture as well?
00:28:07
Matt
Yeah, absolutely. So as in I definitely think Newcastle put out a stronger 11 and they will start players like Gordon who you know by you know, he's he's up there with Isaac and with Bruno with Bruno G as as their top top players. So I do think they gave it their their best of the selection they had against us for the prem game but i think they'll go all out for this league game because you know if they if if if they lose this then it's trying to work out what are they really playing for this season um you know that obviously they'll be in the fa cup but then in the league you know sort of where where do they go um where do they really focus because it's
00:28:52
Matt
the they' They're so far down in the league at the moment. They're 12th.
00:28:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
What you love you know sucks their manager, yeah
00:28:58
Matt
I think they're fans.
00:29:01
Matt
That's the thing. Eddie Howe will definitely be feeling the pressure and he'll need some ah ah ah good results to really try and get you know alongside the fans again. um I don't think it's sacking for Eddie Howe as imminent, um but you know sort of if If the results don't go with him in the next couple of weeks and throughout November, then you know the board could be knocking on his door.
00:29:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah it definitely could be and then hopefully in the nicest way possible hopefully we can add a bit more pressure on how because we we want to win this game um yeah i mean it's it's so it's Wednesday game again obviously um which is nice because you know playing Sunday Sunday we've got that Wednesday game in between um if we do swap out all 11 players it it would be interesting because um
00:29:34
Matt
Absolutely.
00:29:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
that probably just means that's that is how Maresca sort of views our squad that would confirm it for all of us wouldn't it that's how Maresca sees sees us got the moment he's got two 11s that he can start and maybe swap some players in between um in in terms of like the formation and stuff for the for the for the new caster game i i think i'm we're gonna see the sort of similar sort of thing again we haven't really switched too much from that this season um obviously a couple of different players will have different roles i think we're if we if we do see the changes in terms of like maybe Vega and someone like that i think Vega will be that one who's Inverting maybe not playing as high up as gusto did in that game. So maybe a bit more to do for our attacking players and Just one last thing before before we finish up that we obviously we saw netto start on Sunday and he was sort of on the fringes a bit but
00:30:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
He definitely had a performance that warranted you know staying in that Premier League starting 11. Do you think we see Sancho in this game against Newcastle and do you think maybe that's sort of where his place is for the moment in these cup games?
00:30:51
Matt
Maybe it's very tricky because Sancho started life in the prem really really well in his first three appearances he got through assists and so he definitely warranted keeping that that Premier League place. I think Maresco is just now working out that you know, if we really want pace on the wings, we've got Madawake, we've got Neto and we've got Mudrik. Those are really our three proper wingers. Sancho's not necessarily necessarily that that similar type of winger. He's a lot more about keeping the ball close to him, trying to do one twos and bring other players into play in in in short, small areas. um And so I don't think he's as direct as those other wingers that we have.
00:31:33
Matt
um And so I think that's just what he's noticing um And it really depends on the game plan that that Mariska wants to set out with with Sancho with Felix, you know sort of they they probably Could slot into the number 10 role a bit more more comfortably um just to be that creative style and At the same time, you know, sort of I think Sancho, you know, maybe he'll benefit from playing the Europa games and the Cup games a bit more just because it's a slightly lower level. So he'll be slightly above that and he'll be able to express himself a bit more and have a bit more influence on the game.
00:32:12
Matt
um He's still a top Premier League player,

Chelsea's Squad Depth and Future Matches

00:32:14
Matt
but I think this is just one of those things that we're seeing is that the players know the quality that's in the squad. They know the the challenge that there is to demand starting plays. And Neto, just in the last couple of weeks, he's showed up, he stepped up and been demanding that. ah Whereas Sancho has gone a little bit quieter. That's not to say that he's totally out of the prem squad and the prem team. It's just at this moment in time that he is. And I think that's a beautiful thing for Chelsea fans just to to to see because I think this this team that we're seeing that's going to be playing in the prem is going to be ever developing. um And that goes down just to Maruska's genius.
00:32:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I agree with you there. I'm hoping that we continue to see that. It's going to be a very interesting week for Chelsea fans. As we know, we've had all these big upcoming fixtures and we're right in the thick of it now. Newcastle away, Man United away and Arsenal at home await us before the next international break.
