Welcome Back and Catching Up

00:00:15
Speaker
Let's get everyone, welcome back to my first kicks. This is episode 202 and this week I bring back my guy, I don't know why I say my guy a lot now, but my guy Trayvon, what's good bro? Hey man, my guy is like real catchy. But I will say,
00:00:31
Speaker
You are my guy. I reached out, I reached out. I was like, dang, man, we did it virtually. I need to pull up so I can actually show some real shoes and actually talk kicks with you. No, but you threw up the party, the daily paper party. Yes, I did see you there. And then I also seen you outside last lap. Oh, yes.
00:00:49
Speaker
Shit, do I remember that? I don't know if I remember that. Oh wait, no, yeah, yeah, yeah. But i was that was after my boy's wedding. Yeah, yeah congratulations to him. Yeah, he's the producer of the podcast. Dee's not here today, sorry. yeah yeah Shout out, shout out Dee. He got ah stuck in a snowstorm. um But, you know, you you pulled the pulled up on you and I was like, yo man, I got the studio now, you gotta pull up. And so, yeah, this is,

Networking and Support in Podcasting

00:01:13
Speaker
I feel like,
00:01:14
Speaker
Just ah just to to ah to take the onus on me, that episode that we did, I promoted it poorly all right ah to me. okay right and i And I always was like, damn, yo. And then you still helped me. You helped me get Nick the Paula on. I mean, you've been helping me just in general, just like you know yeah we've always had these like small conversations and stuff like that. So I've always felt just like you've been part of this team so you know in the back. like I can't take no credit for that, man. i mean i just see it for what it is. You know what I'm saying? You're working hard, you got something good going, and I didn't mind just letting, you know, some support. I mean, I appreciate you, man. You don't even understand like that. Just to even think about like me reaching 200 and like hitting that milestone and you being one of the first two episodes I recorded last year. And then for that to lead to Nick DePaula and then from Nick DePaula led to like me interviewing, um,
00:02:11
Speaker
to like Matt Hathill and like from that it just kept it kept this snowball. My boy, matt me, Matt and Nick had a podcast in 2016 called ah The Nice Kicks Cast on Nice Kicks. That was pretty fun, pre-video, so. Yeah, um I mean, maybe we might come back one of these days. For you here in an episode. I mean.
00:02:31
Speaker
on this podcast. How about that? and I mean, we still talk. All of us still talk. It's not like anything like that. I think it's just more so contract negotiations and stuff like that. I feel you. Yeah. Yeah. We know.

Sneakers, Community, and Events

00:02:42
Speaker
We know that one person locked up. yeah um But this is a different episode. You know, you did already. you I can't ask you what's your first kicks.
00:02:52
Speaker
Cause you've already answered it. Yeah, I mean, this is more out probably a ah conversation. I mean, it's 2025, but um you know, we didn't talk about sneaker a year. We didn't talk about some of the bangers of 24. We didn't talk about what's coming out in 25. We didn't talk about the state of sneakers. We can talk about anything. Yeah, yeah. yeah and This one's free flow. I think everybody, if they do tune in to you or if they just want to go back and get some information on me, they can go back to episode two. Yeah, that's facts. But I did want to touch on, you know, one of my first, like, just wanted to talk to you about that, like,
00:03:24
Speaker
daily paper party, and and what does community mean to you? Because i've i've I've always been trying to get more of like this to be a like an outside thing. you know like I hosted a live one ah with comedy, then I hosted ah hosted a ah ah comedy show ah ah joined with the podcast. like like My first kicks present sold out, and I wanted to build more of just like people that actually come in and interact. and Seeing what you did at Daily Paper was like the coolest thing. like Yeah, I mean, honestly, I can't even take credit for that. Shouts to the Griggs brothers. um They're like family, you know what I mean? My East Coast family. So, um New York has allowed me to loiter and pretty much hang out in their establishments, you know what I mean? I've been in Daily Paper, I hang out in extra butter. yeah um I hang out in concepts. So like these places, um you see people often and then you kind of, you know, we have different ideas and we think of, you know, certain things. Shout out to the Daily Paper also having a chess event um that that took place and that was really great. Opening up the, you know, the doors for the chess community. yeah
00:04:32
Speaker
Um, it just came about just, you know, they had, um, summer, a

Storytelling in Sneaker Culture

00:04:36
Speaker
summer out and on the rooftop that was going on the previous summer. And I was supposed to be a part of that series early on and it didn't work out and they were like, yo, you're going to be the first one to kick it off the next one. Yeah. So that's how it happened. You know, it was a IOU, but, um, and also.
00:04:52
Speaker
you know I don't assume anything. you know i mean I'm the transplant from Compton, so being out here in such a big city, it's um it means it means a lot when when people from other places come and show up for you.
00:05:04
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, its that's what's like really great about New York and you know I was just recently on the train and I watched the subway takes where they talked about if you're not a New Yorker. oh yeah Yeah, if you're not born in New York. I'm definitely not a New Yorker. I won't claim to be it. I don't wanna shout to New Yorkers. they're They're great people. I mean, it it's always a give and take because like the one thing that New York is based on is immigrants coming from Ellis Island and it's like all this. like It's hard for you to be like, Nah, you not from here when this place is like the first place people have car like, you know, or I mean it's pride You know, I mean like we don't own anything but at the end of the day we still claim stuff Yeah, you know, I mean, yeah, you asked me, you know I was in Denton tears and somebody from Los Angeles from the West Side was like it's not like Compton and I turn around and I'm like
00:05:56
Speaker
What about Compton? You know what I mean? I don't own Compton, but I'm very prideful about it. It's tattooed on my body. So, you know what I mean? We're gonna have, you know, I'm gonna carry yourself a certain way. I'm gonna need a New York tattoo somewhere. I'm gonna have to get one eventually. I'm gonna get me something New

Networking and Opportunities

00:06:12
Speaker
York related from my time here. Chop cheese? Absolutely not. I'll probably get like a slice of pizza or something. One of those splash tattoos.
00:06:20
Speaker
um Friday 13 pull up. like Let me get one. They don't do pizza though. They do like weird spooky stuff. Hockey mask for Jason with your knives. Like I'm not getting that. Next time I see, cause I've never had a flash tattoo either. I got plenty of tattoos. yeah This would be my first one. And I'm kind of like, all right, let's just, let's just do a flash for New York. I feel like on West. I would do a cab too. Oh, cab would be fire. i i Like cab. Yeah. Oh, that would be fire. Yeah. Old school joint, yeah, that was gonna be fire. um and that like I think it's just the, the what I saw was like everybody was down to talk to each other, work right? yeah um I find that really rare and in like some of these sneaker events that I be going to. I don't know, I just think that, again,
00:07:08
Speaker
It's easier to talk on the internet talk with your thumbs talk with your mind. Yeah um It's getting harder and harder to talk in person and actually be personable um But that's not a knock like I mean people are quick to call someone weird and and and kind of like tease those folks um I just think that they need to be in more comfortable situations and kind of get those conversations out Yeah, um but yeah ah the community like most of the people know each other or they know if they know me that I'm cool enough to trust them to have that conversation and feel like they can just be themselves. So um those are the environments that we're trying to create most of the time. What do you feel about networking and how does that
00:07:48
Speaker
Like, especially in the spaces that we are in, like, how does that look to you? is it these Do you see a lot more? Time and place. yeah I think time and place. You get what I'm saying? Like, I've seen you out. Like, I don't want to talk about a pod or potential next guest or whatever. It's like, hey, good to see you. Nice to meet all these people that are with you. And you're like I'm about to go in here. um But um network is cool, man.
00:08:14
Speaker
the worst thing somebody could say is no. You get what I'm saying? yeah like i don't I don't understand the nervousness or maybe fear of rejection possibly, but whatever. yeah you know It's not a hard, it's not it's not like a personal thing. I think it's time and place. Again, somebody trying to eat, someone rushing, someone you know there's never a right time, but maybe somebody actually stops in their track and you got one shot. right So do all the networking possible.
00:08:41
Speaker
Yeah, the the art of the elevator pitch is what I've like I I just I hold in on that. Yeah, you know, I mean, I'm just the type of person to put you on the spot. Yeah, I hate I hate hate hate hearing people talk about what they would do or what they want to do. Yeah. And if I have the opportunity to help them immediately, I'm going to put you on a spot. I'm going to call said person. I'm going to give you access to that.
00:09:09
Speaker
You know what I'm saying? Like, I don't want to hear, oh, I'm not ready yet. You were talking all that stuff, yeah saying you need an opportunity, or if you had this said person, like you asked me about potential gas, and you said Nick DePaula. It's one of the biggest sneaker guys in the industry. You know what I'm saying? Like, all right, hold on. Yep, I just did his pod. Gone. yeah It was cool.
00:09:33
Speaker
you He was on there, yeah you know what I'm saying? So like, that's the thing. Unless you're like, no, no, I'm not ready yet. I gotta get prepared and like, I don't know what to tell you after that. Right, yeah. I think it's just, so like ah doing this for so long, like I think the the whole,
00:09:49
Speaker
oh I'm not ready is like we is weird to me because if you're like I can't wait till I get to do that you're like But then what if it's that right in front of you? You can't wait the time is over I mean the same thing about Dayton no think about a chick that you probably Lusted over online or whatever and she's right there. It's like why you didn't talk to her You get what I'm saying? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I get what you're saying. It's the same analogy, you know what I'm saying, when you really think about it. There's never a right time. She might actually rock with you right then and there. But then you're like, nah, I gotta get my money up. And

Intentions and Transactions in Relationships

00:10:22
Speaker
it's like, well, why do you want to get your money up if she's not rocking with you while you don't have money? Yeah, but then you don't even, my whole thing is you don't even know if you're gonna have another chance. Why are you gonna waste that one chance to be like, maybe I'ma get it. So again, apply that to whatever you're trying to accomplish. Yeah.
00:10:37
Speaker
That's all. Yeah. I think it's just like, especially when I was growing up, I think that was like, I spent too much time waiting or like accepting that. and i And once I was finding like, quote unquote, outside, it was like, I'm taking, I'm taking like, I was saying yes to everything, you know, or I was like, as somebody, if I saw somebody that I would want to have on a podcast, for example, I would be, I would just go up to them and be like, yo, you know, yeah hey, how's it going? names hass like ah I also feel like there is an art to that and it's it's hard to do that on the internet and create a relationship with somebody. um Everything's transactional. yeah So you can't you can't take it for, you can't say, even somebody's saying, i I wish I could be friends with that person. yeah There is a transactional part about it regardless whether it's, yo, that person would really make me laugh every time.
00:11:35
Speaker
I see people like, yo, I would love to be best friends with Zack Fox. OK. Oh, yeah. Zack Fox probably is not intentionally trying to be funny, or he might have a time where he's like, the camera's off and I just want to have a regular conversation. And you're like, no, do the funny stuff.
00:11:52
Speaker
That's not how that works. That's not how that works. You know what I'm saying? You can take the good and you take the bad. So um yeah, everything's, you know, sadly it is what it is. It's transactional sometimes. Yeah, there's facts. I mean, I was talking to somebody ah recently about it. Like, I think sometimes, and especially in sneakers or like in this, some people just see you as another rung on a ladder. ah you're They're just trying to climb.
00:12:16
Speaker
and And it's like, it's onto you or the person that's listened to this and is looking for this advice. I don't know if you are, but but it's onto yourself to just look at it in and just be like, that's who they see me as. I need to see them as like, either like you either on my level or like we have this kind of relationship or this is just like a one and done and you just gotta be like, but always accept that somebody shows you who they are. Like, yeah.

Sneaker Aesthetics and Cultural Impact

00:12:42
Speaker
Like, that's not going to change. You can't be like, you know, now we're best friends after that. Like, it's just like, nah, you're just trying to go trying to just get up, trying to get closer to who you know who they were trying to get close to. That was close to you. And then they were like, all right, we good. We out of here. yeah So yeah, accepting that. but But I did talk, I mentioned Ellis Island. So I talked about immigrants. And I definitely wanted to talk about those kids of immigrants. you were You were talking about how much you wanted them. And I was like, yeah, you you you know what?
00:13:09
Speaker
On top of that, you were the one that sold me on them. Yeah, I did. Because i was kind I was very like, like, ah, this is cool. It's all right. Like, I like the colors. I like the colors. And then I saw your your tweet. And then you were like, yeah, them the ones. And I was like, I looked at them a little bit more. And I was like, nah, yeah, he's right. Like, so much that goes into it. Shout out to Daniel. Shout the ho out to Obby. Shout out to them. I'm missing one more person, bro. One of me.
00:13:37
Speaker
and
00:13:41
Speaker
for the designer. okay I'm blanking on his name right now though. um But I seen him out not too long ago. yeah um But I also pulled up to their pop-up, you know what I mean? What's the place, Kamali? Great storytelling. um The rollout was great.
00:13:59
Speaker
um Yeah, I just really enjoyed that. But like overall, you know, whether purple or orange, they just they just did really good, man. That's the calling card. I mean, I've seen Marvel vs. Capcom, but. Well, a well, a Dennis. Well, Dennis.
00:14:19
Speaker
um but But I was more so looking at ah like the world of the backdrop of Marvel vs. Capcom selecting. yeah And then it was that's what that's and it was like, nah, it's the calling card. And I was like, oh, that's not like really in my opinion. first world thoughts of that. um But then the detail, like, you know, you got the suede gray right there on the front, cause I got the purple pair. yeah um And then just like the laces and um it's just, it's just a fun shoe, man. It's just really a pretty shoe to look at, you know what I mean? And a lot of people like, they look and they like, whoa, you got those. It's a lot of social currency that come with them. oh yeah And you don't get tired of wearing them. Like their shoe that you grab and like,
00:15:08
Speaker
I don't know it's just a really beautiful shoot I did so well with it and like um if they were sitting here right now I'll probably be like looking at them the whole time over talking about them just because you know um they're good.
00:15:20
Speaker
but like I could talk about so many shoes that I wore this past year. The 1906 R loafers, the New Balance joints. I can't cannot get behind them. So comfortable. but i'm So comfortable. um I work in you know an office. yeah So being able to like wear those, those were great. I'm trying to think what else I was i wore a lot.
00:15:44
Speaker
Man, I wore so many shoes, dude. I mean, when you were when you're on on your episode, you were talking about some boots. What was it? It was like you were rocking some... You were like, yo, these mad comfortable. You should definitely get a pair. It was like... Was the ACG? Nah, it was like a boot that was like a clog or something like that. I'm trying to remember the boot, though. I mean, I do have the gallery department uggs.
00:16:08
Speaker
I mean, those are crazy. The cowboy boy, the boot strength. Yeah, i just I get all the you know, yeah. And we were talking off off offline about the Air Max 95 slash. Yeah. Those are good. Shout out my man Stash. The Brain Deck Converse. I'm a big Converse guy. Shout out to my man Steli.
00:16:27
Speaker
Adrian Steli over there at Converse and ah GN, you know what I'm saying? The plugs. yeah I wear a lot of that. So I wore the brain dead joints and I got the denim tears on today. Love those, yeah. i'm Real fun. Yeah. um be Like when was the last year? Because, well, first of all, as soon as you said that, I was like, now i can't now I can only hear in my head. I'm going to take you for a ride. That's all I hear of my head right now because you're just like Marvel's Capcom. Marvel's got great esteem. Yeah character select me. I had that show on on Dreamcast. So I was cooking every yeah I got the arcade at the crib. Oh and everyone lose you can pull up. Yeah, let me know. I'm full of I mean, I do I do three Cyclops teams. I don't know i't if if it allows it if you allow whatever works
00:17:14
Speaker
I used to go to Chinatown Fair. I don't know if you've ever been. I haven't. Bro, back in high school, Chinatown Fair, where they had the Marver's Capcom machine, lines. It would just be lines, bro. Love it. And people just going crazy. I believe it. I believe it. Our gates is another culture that's untapped. For sure, for sure. So what was a shoe that the last time that you had that experience with where you were just looking at it and you were like, yo,
00:17:42
Speaker
I don't know. A lot of silhouettes are like nice. yeah Just great shoes that like um that are just really great. ah Obviously, you know, Arizona 95 is my my yeah goal. I came in here with the Penny 2, Stu Seuss hair, yeah black, so thoses are those are nice. I like a triple black shoe too now. That's growing on me.

SLAM Magazine and Basketball Storytelling

00:18:10
Speaker
um
00:18:14
Speaker
Man, it's a lot of shoes. It's a lot of shoes. I brought some. I brought some that are really nice to look at, so. You want to want to want to start them up? I don't know. We're a little early in the show. yeah you oh mean However, I think we should do one and then we can do another one after another question. Okay, go ahead. So so let's do let's do these.
00:18:35
Speaker
Yeah, go ahead. You can show um show them the box. You got to show them the box. Look at that. Look at that. um Look at that. I've never seen on that box. and This is a Reebok in 2025 that we're talking about. We're discussing. This is from the family and friends slam collection. um Nick DePaula worked. He did his thing with these. You know what I'm saying? um And I know he's probably tired of me replying to every story that he posts of every shoe that he's worked on. I bet. So a few details on there. He got the three slam stars on there. You got the metallic Reebok logo. You got the question on the back. You got the... All suede, upper? All suede, upper leather sock liner part, you know what I mean? Yeah. And so, Iverson has a lot of stuff that matches the box. There's some pictures and stuff on there. This is based on the $65,000 question. Oh. And also,
00:19:47
Speaker
He had like an AP watch. So that's the details from that. Also, um you know the the hex is yeah know kind of grayed out for that. um And then on the lace locks, it's Bubba Chuck. You know what I mean? So that's pretty cool. And then under the ISO, which you can kind of point to them, it's the three of diamonds. That's crazy. You know what I mean? So some great details that they were, you know, um um Russ Bengston. Shout out Russ, man. Shout out Russ. Wrote a story on Iverson. I think you probably remember the cover shoot. Yeah. But it's a lot of Easter eggs in there on that shoe. Nick did a great job with that. I need him.
00:20:26
Speaker
Hey, don't talk to me, talk to Nick, man. i've read Every shoe that he showed on his story, I was like, I need them. That's your first time seeing those in person, right? First time ever, like, yeah. OK, yeah. I'm not like a huge... It's a beautiful shoe, right? It's my favorite color, yeah but like, it's a lot going on. And then obviously non-traditional, but the storyteller makes it really easy to like, gravitate to it. You know what I'm saying? Especially when you just look at the toe cap and you're like, Why is it? And then now that I've explained it, it's gonna, you know, probably get a little bit more love on that end. I think that like honoring SLAM in 30 years. 30 years. Shout out 30 years, man. um They really had a resurgence with like selling the shirts, um doing the book, like the cover.
00:21:17
Speaker
of book yeah A book with all the covers. There we go. A book with all the covers. um Such iconic. like I remember back in the day. The IP's crazy. yeah i That's the basketball Bible for real. Exactly. Has never changed. I've never wavered. I still got love for Slams. Still cop Slams to this day. you know I mean, a lot of people playing cop and prints. We still with the prints. We still with the Digitals. But yeah,
00:21:42
Speaker
yeah it's it's it's important, man. Everybody wants to be in front of a Slam. Yeah. the that that like i mean even like Just even thinking about the iconic covers and seeing it you know trend turned into a sneaker is is something that, like that level of heritage, you don't really see a lot of that now. I feel like, ah you know it's a lot of brands are just being like, I got this story to tell, let's tell this story. Versus, like yo, let's harken back and connect a lot of these dots that,
00:22:16
Speaker
you had to really live through in order to appreciate. I want to pat myself on the back for keeping all this a secret because I just, when I first knew about it, I was like, all right. And then, you know, they did the unveiling in May. Yeah. And they only showed, rolled out three. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? And that was cool. But yeah, I knew, you know, I got the,
00:22:39
Speaker
um it Due to, you know, um delivery problems, I was gonna bring Adidas Kobe to Yellow Suede. It didn't make it. So I have to, you know, circle back and that maybe I'll let you guys, but let you borrow it to show off on the show. oh would obviously say yeah ah you not take care theres Like, so I've never owned an Iverson, right? Maybe I had a two. Maybe I had a two. I missed out on the original back in 96. And then I got the retro all-star in 01. You had a black toe cap. Yeah. High.
00:23:17
Speaker
And um those those are a little bit bulky, but um the low tops are pretty good. And um with the baggy era being back, they go really well. yeah

Debate: Retro Releases vs. New Classics

00:23:28
Speaker
I think a lot of people would ah really enjoy those if they actually were for sale. I mean, that's what I was just about to say. So like these are just... No, they're not for sale.
00:23:37
Speaker
But not for sale. like I mean, you know, um if if, you know, that's unfortunate if somebody actually did sell their pair. Right. Yeah. No, I'm talking about like, these will never hit. Like, there's no wide release of this collab. No, this is the only ones that are for sale is the lamello balls. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. He has a Puma.
00:23:55
Speaker
collab with them that went live last week. I'm gonna try to get them. I'm gonna try to get them. They're great. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They're great. No misses, man. They didn't miss. You know, they had the Steph Curry, greatest shooter of all time pair. He had a dual pair that they did. So, yeah. That cross-brand collaboration is crazy. It's like I don't even know any other people. I could just work with everybody. Everybody.
00:24:21
Speaker
I mean, that's slam. That's why they, you know, they know all the fame now. Yeah. yeah b Yeah. So like my best friend, his favorite player is Allen Iverson. And so, but he also doesn't really ball in Iverson's, but he says his best best player, his favorite player is Iverson's. I don't know if you like balled in.
00:24:42
Speaker
I hoped in them. I hope that I'm in 10th grade. That's what I said. i yeah in them But I mean, like now it's just a different theme. You know what I mean? I don't play basketball anymore. So um wearing a sneaker like that is just like I could wear some sweats. Yeah. You know what I mean? Like some just a lounge, but like they're just a real nice shoe to look at. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Like it's a lot of details that just get swept under a rug. If I just walked in, who are those? I don't think I would probably get the same attention as them being on display.
00:25:11
Speaker
Yeah, that is Yeah, cuz I that is a shoe you have to explain Yeah, yeah you got to sit somebody down and be like yo or just watch this episode yeah I'm gonna need you to watch this episode before you hold these Yeah No, they're they're they're in the top five the of the of the of the release. Yeah. I just think that aesthetically pleasing from an Instagram, they don't do do it justice. No. Yeah. I mean, you see them here. I mean, I feel like you'd toss this to one of the guys. Like, I think they could do a crazy photo shoot with these, maybe. Oh, I mean, they're they're rolling out. People have them. Yeah. You know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah. yeah They're being ceded to the right people. So I do feel like
00:25:57
Speaker
I need that now, cause now I want to get the magazine. I want to get the, like, give me the stack of all the Allen Iverson covers just so I can have that on display around this or like put it in the case and you got the Allen Iverson cover on the back, you know, so crazy on the back. I mean, like there's, there's plenty of options. at the end of the day, but yeah, it's a nice shoe. So I didn't, I mean, I didn't, we only, glad we only touched on it a little bit, but what does slam mean to you? Like, did we say iconic? I mean, social slam ups, dude, that was like.
00:26:34
Speaker
posters, man, like, you know what I mean? Like that was kind of helping before the internet getting to know my favorite player, yeah understanding who my favorite player i was, um creating my first obsession with basketball outside of trading cards. You know what I'm saying? yeah That up close and personal storytelling, like reading some of the editorials and and and looking at it from a perspective of like, yo,
00:27:00
Speaker
This is who Larry Hughes is. This is who Baron Davis drives. This is you know this is off the court. And like they just always look super cool in their photo shoots. And the storytelling was A plus. And then you get a cool poster and you just throw it up on your wall. So I had tons of those.
00:27:14
Speaker
you know um ah Posters on the wall and now to be friends with some of the guys that you know are Elite legends and you know associated with the with the with the brand and the company um To be a part of the family and friends roll out. Yeah, great I mean, that's huge honors man, you know, maybe in the 60 year I'll get a chance I mean, look. You never know. Yeah, well, we'll see. The, you know, I'm such a huge Russ Bankson fan. I'm a huge Nick fan. Like, you know, these guys, I remember just reading their stuff as like a kid and just being like, you know, one day, like, like, maybe I'll write about sneakers. Maybe I'll do something with sneakers. Like it was always around that. And, you know, the, the way that like 90s basketball just like took over and how,
00:28:05
Speaker
just like so much function throughout these years of just like, you know, they got a new shoe, new shoe, new shoe. And, you know, Iverson's and, you know, and and like as it grows with Jordans, Jordans go crazy and all this new tech. But, you know, now we're seeing this resurgence of of how like all these no old heads are just like or OGs in the game are just like asking for a lot of old models to come back. And yeah. Yeah. I mean, what what are your thoughts?
00:28:34
Speaker
You look to ask all you want. I think ah we've had our time. Yeah, I think there we have to allow new shoes to become classics. Yeah, for sure. You know, I mean, we're taking up space because we're getting maybe a third or second roll out of.
00:28:53
Speaker
of retros and not allowing the new shoes to breathe so we don't get to appreciate them yeah when they first come out. And like now we're begging random 99, bro, lifestyles, takedowns and and stuff to come back out. And um yeah, it's just, you know, you got to just let it be, you know what I mean? And we're holding, we're comparing it to shoes that done extremely well or like that were a part of our childhood when we were 12.
00:29:17
Speaker
You know what I'm saying? So, I'm with the kids, man. If they like A6, if they like um New Balance, if they like Nike, sure. If they like Adidas, you know, the AE1 was praised. I praised the James Harden 9. So, you know. For the 10s. I like the 10s. Look, man, at the end of the day, let em let them all be, um allow them to have some type of, you know, live out here. Right. yeah And be seen and and and have some great storytelling behind it. Don't get so lazy. Yeah. um And we'll, you know, sneakers, sneakers. I mean, it's here to stay anyway. Right. We're going to like die out. Yeah. I

Mentorship in Creative Industries

00:29:56
Speaker
just find it interesting because like a lot of.
00:30:00
Speaker
a lot of the people that feel like the they're the OGs of the sneaker game wanna have this like louder voice on these spaces of just being like, no, we need a ah Nike Destruct to come back or like a a carnivore to be dropped next year. Like- No, I mean, again, the materials changed. right All you're gonna do is complain and it's not made the same way. So I stopped fighting that good fight.
00:30:23
Speaker
Again, like I said, allowing new models to breathe and the story telling to be what it is. You know, we got Wim B, we got SGA, you know, different things. And we're just quick to just say cost of trash. Yeah, facts. I was able to pick up shots to JD sports. I was able to pick up a pink racer Agassiz. Oh, yeah. Last week. Yeah. So good. I know that people are getting the weather's good. Oh, my God.
00:30:49
Speaker
Cause I was looking at my homie posted it recently, but it's not aged at all, right? Or does it have a age? It has an age. It has an age. Okay. yeah It has an age midsole, right? yeah Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I love that. It's like such a nice, like small little touch. So good. Yeah. So that, yeah, I'm going to have to, I'm going to save those for the spring. I wore them, I wore them last week where there wasn't that great. yeah But like, I'm going to bring those back out. Same with the Cortez joints. There you go.
00:31:16
Speaker
ah you the speaking of Cortez joints, did you see that they're dropping the book ah for his gumps? Yeah, I like those. Yeah, you like them? Yeah. I mean, I like the books. I still want to ball in them. I haven't balled in them. I wouldn't play basketball in them, but I will say that um there would be my modern day chukka. Yeah. I wouldn't wear those i would wear those like a modern day chukka. Yeah.
00:31:41
Speaker
I'll miss the Chukka Vad. You know, Vance Chukka? I like Nike Chukka. I like a Vance Chukka. Nike Chukka was great. With the Lunar Lawn one? Yeah, that one was great too. Yeah, man, they need to bring back that. Like, I would, that's, see now I'm sounding like, you need to bring that back? Yeah, you're retro, man. and the dominance of Nike at the time. They're competing with their selves. And everybody else is kinda, here and there, still in attention. But at this point, breaking the glass, opening up the archives and taking Nike. Well, yeah, we're getting undefeated fours back. Well, we're getting undefeated fours. Great shoe. I'm not gonna bring it back to myself. Some girls need to just be girls. I agree, but...
00:32:25
Speaker
Did you ever get them? No, because that was like such a West Coast shoe. And I get that. I get that. But like how I felt about it probably when it first rolled out. I was just going to say. Yeah. Like, you know what I'm saying? Because you're from where the West Coast. You're from on the West Coast. But no, but I get it. But I'm also, but I'm also like, it doesn't mean much. Right. Same thing with the Galaxy phone. Like, it's like, it'll be cool. But like, it's such a busy shoe to wear with like in an adult environment. right yeah You know where the galaxy forms to work and like go through a day and hope that somebody says those are cool. I'm gonna tell you I'm gonna be the total I'm a total opposite. That's what we would do man. That's what we would do man.
00:33:10
Speaker
ah Look, I understand it. And I'm the total opposite. I am the person that's like, I'm rocking. i I mean, look, I'm rocking these. Loud as hell. I did get one compliment. My boss came and was like, yo, your shoes are very nice. And I was like, ah ah yeah, these are the Trinidad yeah James. shouts to him Yeah, shout out Trinidad James. Shout out Saucony for blessing me with these. ah Jason, Jennifer, shout out to y'all. These are the Louisa Harris. Big fan of Succone. I say Succone, I'm the West Coast. They sent, they so at one point they they put the bo they put it the the phonetic spelling on the box and was like, this is how you say it, Sakani. So after that, it just snuck me. Okay, Sakani. I'm on the East Coast now.
00:33:54
Speaker
the But yeah, I mean, I am allowed. Big fan of what they got going on. Oh, yeah, for sure. I mean, they got the J-tips. J-tips. Star Cal joints. Yeah. yeah i i They blessed me with though the Star Cal Cordura joints. It's the grayish one. OK.
00:34:11
Speaker
Amazing shoe to just wear a side gun has a PE coming and weighing those that's gonna be no they're good, man They're lifestyle. They're running joints like shots to them shots to them Yes, I can't wait for that West. I don't want no because he rocks I'm like crazy unreleased sample at complex con and I was rolling with him for a little bit cuz I bother him a lot every time I see him. So now I think he knows who I am. okay But I was like... I'm bothering people. Nah, man. We talked about the elevator pitch. I gave him the elevator pitch. But then he was just like, roll with me. I was like, all right, cool. but the But he was like showing it off. And yeah, that shoe looks insane. And I can't wait to hopefully get it. so hes yeah I mean, he he he he likes details. Yeah.
00:34:58
Speaker
but another good storyteller, another person that cares about craft. Yeah. um He's like a director. Big fan of Wes Eichner. Big fan. I met him with my man, Hovain Rest in Peace. Rest in Peace, man. That's like, yeah. You posted about him recently, too. Yeah, man. i was he was He was very ah instrumental and in a lot of things for me. So I miss him daily.
00:35:20
Speaker
yeah yeah Sorry for your loss, man. It's tough. But, I mean, not to just move on, but um the we talked about like you know community, and like I definitely, and I think, feel like we touched on it a little bit on your first episode about like mentorship, and you know you talked about you know bra like just like working with people, and then I just think that, what is like mentorship look to you, and and like how to how can somebody,
00:35:48
Speaker
who's getting to kind of like not be big bro, but like also guide people. I mean i think that the the the job of a mentor is not to just say, look what I did. yeah It's more so just kind of shortening that journey yeah for whoever they're mentoring, but also um giving advice, not advice, giving suggestions. yeah And they take the suggestions and apply it to however they, um you know, take it that way. um Because you don't want to just say, do this, do this, do this, do this. And they say, I did everything and it didn't work. work You know, you apply what applies to your life and you go about it that way. um But yeah, just that, I mean, we have a lot of great mentors, you know, but sometimes people like to hear themselves talk. So

SLAM Magazine Collaborations

00:36:36
Speaker
I'm very wary of like, my time and and and in in
00:36:42
Speaker
all that stuff. I'm mindful of invading people's world. yeah If I truly can't help you, then I'll point you in the direction of somebody who can. Some people have begged me to be their mentor, and I'm just like, bruh, I'm winging it right now. I'm going to be honest to you. You know what I'm saying? And I think there's a lot of lack of honesty. A lot of people want to be I helped you or I did this or I did that, you know what I mean? it And you kind of kind of stick take a step back and just chill. Nah, yeah. the I feel like it's tough when... Because I mean, this is all stems from the tweet from... That's why I i reposted that tweet. Which one? The one that Kari sent out. If you need a... to listen to you. Oh, to have a conversational conversation with him. Yeah. um In terms of just like... I've talked to him a few times. never I've never met him. um I've talked to him in Instagram, DM, yeah about just different things and yeah um trying to see his outlook on things, I think, that dude's a talented brother. Same. And just more so just look at it as far as, you know, we're quick to have a motion tied to things yeah versus actually seeing it through and seeing what's actually
00:37:53
Speaker
how it is. And also, like the world doesn't evolve around us. We are the 1% of the opinion, you know what I mean? And working on the marketing side or seeing how consumers digest things or like things. Most of the time, people don't know what they like anyway. Yeah. And it's like, is it on the onus of us to sell that idea as a great like, yo, this is a great idea or is it just? no I mean, because it's subjective. man Right. Yeah.
00:38:21
Speaker
Sometimes you got a hit, sometimes you got trash. yeah You don't, you know? you never know like yeah it's ah it's I feel like it's a flip point. I think it's the confidence of your own taste. okay If people believe you have taste, then they're going to buy it. They're going to trust the taste level. right You know what I'm saying? yeah If you walk around with lack of confidence, why I want to buy anything that you support, right or you say, hey, this is a great show, and I'm like,
00:38:45
Speaker
No taste, bro. yeah You know what I'm saying? So for me to say, hey, this is a great shoe, that means you you trusted my taste level. right He's usually good. He has a high percentage of great taste and the things that he is associated with. yeah You get what I'm saying? yeah yeah So I look at it like that. No, yeah. And I think that, I mean, look,
00:39:08
Speaker
When it comes to like me, I guess, it's just like I've gotten a lot of people reaching out to me being like, yo, how do I get into podcasts and this and that? Just make it. Yeah, exactly. So that's always my like, just start, like yeah do your thing. Easier said than done though. Easier said than done. And I'm always like, and then I give like the caveat of like, be different. Like you want, like the two things you need to do is start and be different. Yeah. I mean, the word saturation is an excuse.
00:39:35
Speaker
Yeah, for sure. You know what I mean? Yeah. Like, you still gotta think about your idea. Right, yeah. And your eye, no one can peek in your brain. No, yeah. So that's the thing. I always, yeah, and then I always say like, nobody can do it like you, you know? um You can have the same, I can, you can be one of the other five people being like, what's your first kiss? But I'm like, you're not gonna do it like me, you know you know? But that also comes with confidence and which just comes back to what you're saying. That's a fact. Yeah. The, it's like the, the way that like,
00:40:05
Speaker
people try to move in this is always just like, how do I help guide you so that you don't have to do the extra? But then when it's just like, like, oh, i'm now I'm bouncing back. I'm like, I'm not accepting your advice. Then you keep asking me for it. It's always just like,
00:40:25
Speaker
How do I balance this so I'm not looking at myself being like, am I the one crazy woman? Like, you know, like it's it's I don't that's like that's where mentorship I've I think that's where a lot of people struggle with mentorship because it's like The person that you you're trying to help is like, yeah, you know, I'm trying to get through this wall. I'm trying to get through this wall. And I'm like, yeah, but there's a door right there. And you're like, OK, but then the the door don't got keys. But I'm like, but you are the key. And you're just like, you know, like you got to like I'm always trying to like, you know, maneuver around these ways to just help help people forward. But right.
00:41:00
Speaker
I mean, this is also a conversation me and Kari had too, because he he's like, I don't really wanna, you know, like, I'm trying to bring everybody with me, but the people that, and I'm also the same way, where it's just like the people who wanna come with me and are putting in the effort are gonna get the effort back, but the people who are just like, just drag me, are just like, nah. That's not how it works. how That's i anchor.
00:41:21
Speaker
Yeah, exactly. There's no climate. No climate. So talk about anchors. Whoa. Talking about anchors. Homes are very heavy. But these phones, these phones are flying. Right. Hey, man. I mean, there's a segue. You'll you'll understand why he said that. I'm going to move these. Yeah. Yeah. I was going to say we're going to put these.
00:41:41
Speaker
you a reason to support your segue. I actually got the the box that everybody else didn't get. Everybody else got the cool box. ah But you got the cool sneakers. It's all good. So let's talk about these foams right here.
00:42:01
Speaker
You have everybody hitting me up about these. Yeah. Bro, I mean, look, one thing real quick. Shout out to Nick. I ran into Nick at Complex Con and he had these on and seeing them in person on his feet. I think I again, I ran to his story. I was just like, I need these. But everybody. yeah everybody knew. And I'm not a foam guy, so I'm just like, yeah, these are just insane. I told him, I said, yo, those are the ones. Yeah. mean You did your thing. And he's had plenty of collaborations with Anthony Hardaway. Yes. You know what I mean? Through the Soul Collector times. Yeah. um And, you know, who else to do it by him?
00:42:43
Speaker
um yeah they're they're very It's a very interesting shoe with the white and the blue. and And for those that are kind of like probably scratching their heads with the design, it's the pinstripes from Penny's jersey on the Slam Magazine.
00:42:58
Speaker
um But then there's just, you know, there's just so many details as far as, you know, the the Orlando magic stripe there. And then you got, you got the swoosh on the carbon fiber, carbon fiber. yeah And then in the back you got the the slam stars. yeah um And yeah, man, I mean, it's, it's, it's really good. So these are, yeah, it's funny. Cause like I was literally talking about this Jersey.
00:43:25
Speaker
ah

Personal Stories in Basketball Marketing

00:43:27
Speaker
like the other day, because we were talking about, the funny, there's a segment on seven, or not seven, but like they did like a talk on 7 p.m. in Brooklyn where- Shout out to my man, Pierce. Shout out Mero. Shout out to Mero, shout out to Mero. Shout out to Rudy Gaye. Yeah, facts. Shout out to the whole team. But they do like, they're like, oh, is this Jersey nasty worker or something like that where I maneuvered it off of like, where it's just like, yeah, is, cause Penny in a, would Penny in a Nick's Jersey be nasty?
00:44:02
Speaker
I mean, he didn't play his best, but... No, but I feel like it's still... I'm anti-slander, Penny. No, I mean, look. I mean, Miami Heat Penny gave us the Penny Heat... Penny Two cute colorways. Yeah, yeah. So I can never be upset. Yeah, yeah. But we were talking about the... I thought... I think the magic jerseys is just like that black magic jersey with those pinstripes. It's just... an all-time classic along with the Hawks. Well, that's from the blue jersey. Oh, that's the blue jersey? So the Orlando. So you see the actual, the lining part, this is the blue part and the stripes from it. No, I was talking about this. Oh, yeah, yeah. But I'm talking about the original design of the shoe. Yeah, it's from that color. From that one, yeah. And then recently I watched the 30 for 30 with him and Shaq. Yeah. And I was like, yeah, this is crazy.
00:44:48
Speaker
I mean, at one point in time, Penny had us wearing band-aids on their eyes. Oh, yeah. Parts, you know, I mean, in the middle of our head, like Stefan Marbury or whatnot. And um yeah, man, he was he was as big as Jordan and shouts to my agency that I work at, Wyden Kennedy. Stacey Wall created Little Penny.
00:45:06
Speaker
Oh, really? yeah That's fire. That's fire. Yeah, Lil Penny was, ah I think that was my second favorite ah like marketing campaign. okay ah Because first is Grandmama. as always It will always be Grandmama. Larry Johnson, my favorite player of all time. okay ah I know very, and very great guy. Great guy. But um yeah, I mean, I used to throw. We passed out some groceries. Oh, yeah. About three weeks ago. Oh, fire. Yeah. So that's me, Grandma. He's a good dude. If you ever just tell him I'm his big.
00:45:38
Speaker
He around here somewhere, he around here somewhere. the ah i used to yo I used to shoot threes and put up, el my name has no L in it. ok It all used to still go like this. so It was a cool salute. um that that like ah But yeah, the jerseys, like I think that his this touch, Nick's touch is absolutely insane. like yeah that this shoe, they should, I mean, I feel like all brands should be bringing Nick in to do GRs or yeah however, you know what I'm saying? Like he's he's one he's one of the best in the game at that stuff. You know what I mean? As far as PEs yeah and storytelling. and Yeah. Like I said, i mean he made me a Kobe 11 from back in the day and
00:46:24
Speaker
he found a way to have some like turquoise blue tiger stripe with a neon swoosh and a white soul but it was kind of like based on my I won best dressed in 2003 in high school. Wow. So he like and I had this like turquoise academic velour sweatsuit with some white Air Force Ones. Wow. Yeah. And like, he just kind of like made them into it. And so like, um, behind the tongue, it says black and then it says Trey. And then on the back, it's LAX with the swoosh. I'm gonna need a picture of these. I'll send them. I'll send a picture of them. I'll put them in here. Yeah. Yeah. Cause that sounds and like just to even try to envision. I hope in them know. So like, they're not like, they're not like in the best condition, but yeah, I'll still send a picture of them. I just need a visual oh yeah that I mean look he's he's one of the most talented. I think that his like and he's also just like really nice to like actually like talk to um I have cares. Yeah, the like
00:47:31
Speaker
Cause I have so much history with Soul Collector and and just like when I got to talk to him about it on a, so like you, like I said, I i can't thank you enough because in my wildest dreams, I never thought I would sit down and talk to him, you know? Man, anything possible. Yeah. You make anything possible. I don't know about that. Don't lie to these people.
00:47:54
Speaker
on lot of these people you have my dems flooded for atre hey hey i saw you on my first case you think you get me ah you know denni's robin this on my we that yeah it's just it's just like What SLAM has brought to into so what we now call sneaker culture is is crazy. yeah you know ah Basketball sneakers were something that I feel like in the beginning weren't looked as sort of just like, oh, this is part like you know like clothing or something like that. It was always like function, more function over everything. And then the way that it was written about and how you know guys like you know Nick and and Russ were able to just
00:48:41
Speaker
incorporate hip-hop and just like actual factuals. I don't know, that's a fake word I just made up, but you know, spiritual miracles type of shit. But the way that they were able to just like wordsmith that stuff really transcends into what we have now. So being able to just like have pieces of works that are dedicated to history in your possession is,
00:49:05
Speaker
Does say a lot about you as well, you know, because I also think you are such a big cultivator of community and and history. and Thank you. Yeah, I think that I mean, look, if you ever follow, I mean, I'm pretty sure everybody watching it follows you on Twitter. You probably not. OK. No, i mean and that's good but no but that but that's the thing. i mean every you know the The idea is to reach people that have you haven't reached yet. You know what I mean? like The world does not revolve around me. right so you know um But yeah, I like to think I'm a good follower. I try to be informative and yeah informative and respectable of of whatever I'm actually touching on. yeah which Like last year, you did the McDonald's All-American. Yeah. and
00:49:49
Speaker
ah You gave like a the most inside I've ever, in depth, outside of reading it and slam. okay you know like I've never really understood it, because one, my goal was to get there, and then when I stopped playing basketball, I was just like, no, I'm not even gonna be. right um ah But you you had such a like your introspective, like even, you know, giving fries to the dunk champion. yeah Oh, yeah. I mean, you know, that was like a part of my job, though. But, you know, um working on advertising side, it's not just one person, it's a team. Shout outs to Bodega. um Yeah, man, we just had fun with it. I, you know, got on that account in 2021. So um the first year it was the pandemic. Didn't have a game in Chicago. We had the next game.
00:50:36
Speaker
And then after that, we went to Houston two years back to back. With the last year that you're talking about, um i and instead of going as the community manager and copywriter on the account, I went as a actual basketball affiliate. You know what I mean? someone as like Someone brought out to actually experience it. So when I flew it out, um I was spending time with the players, catching up. And and you know I played pig with Cooper Flag and McKinley Randolph, who's Zach Randolph's daughter.
00:51:05
Speaker
And then also, you know, convincing Jaleel, who won the dunk contest at the University of Miami, to eat some fries after his dunk. You know what I mean? Like, that was just all conversations. And the year before that, I had Jared, you know, Jared McCain show his nails at the McDonald's nails. You know what I mean? So like... Yeah. So, you know, I mean, those are not tick tock was around now. No, no, but I mean, now like, oh, yeah, the way he's like, I mean, I love I love his video. I mean, we've seen we've seen it where it was going. Right. I mean, but just being able to be a part of that and some special, you know what I mean? And watch it grow. And this year I may show my face. So, yeah, but it's always, you know, kudos to the team always doing a great job. We end up winning a Clio the year before. fire. Yeah, that was dope. That's a huge honor, man. That's fire. It was fun. Yeah, I like I mean, if I ever get to work in a marketing space, I only work in advertising the other side, like paid ads and stuff like that. But the marketing part is always the
00:52:10
Speaker
the one that you're just like, i' if I could get in there, you know, because you get the get dude cool stuff, you have to make the commercials and yeah. um But the the way that you like, you had me intrigued where I was like, ah maybe I should.
00:52:25
Speaker
But they did drop, didn't they drop campus highs that year? um So last season, or was it the Hardinates were not for sale. yeah The AE1 was an actual release, which was very rare. You know what I mean? like This is the highest honor and they get a crazy amount of sneakers. They had a D-Rose 1.5 low that I had. um And then they also had like a crazy light boost that most of the players wore.
00:52:55
Speaker
Um, but yeah, no, I had access to all those shoes. So shouts to Adidas people taking care of me. Um, yeah, I'm interested to see the rollout for this year. Yeah. And what shoes that they have, they may have the hard and they may have, um, the Donovan Mitchell's, you know what I mean? Like I guess said, so many different opportunities to, to,
00:53:15
