Keem's Early Influences and Fashion Beginnings

Speaker
So, in school, right? In middle school, high school, my mom picked my outfits every single day. What? Oh God, bro. My mom picked my fits. Now imagine that, right? You in school, everyone flying, your mom picking your fits and... Shout out to mom. You know, it's not that saying didn't have style, but like it wasn't me.
00:00:21
Speaker
So what I would do is I would put a change of clothes in my book bed every day according to what she would dress me in. And I would kind of like style it up. oh And I would do that every single day.
00:00:33
Speaker
And one day I was looking back like, yo, how did I get into fashion? Because I don't come from a fashion background. My family's not into fashion. They're not, you know I mean? So, and I was thinking like, I really had to like,
00:00:44
Speaker
put like a change of fit in my backpack just to be fly. So I feel like that's kind of where it started from. um Where were you copping clothes though? Bro, just the mole. yeah Whatever I could afford, bro. I did not come up with no type of bread. Like we, I mean, I wasn't, you know, like I wasn't poorly. We were in a bad situation, but again,
00:01:09

What's

Introduction to 'My First Kicks' and Guest Keem

00:01:10
Speaker
good everyone? Welcome back to My First Kicks. This is episode 241. And this week I bring to you a special guest, another special guest. Welcome to the podcast, Keem.
00:01:21
Speaker
Yo, man, thanks for having me. Appreciate it. Look, man, I had a you know, huge honor for being your first guest. That was your first show in? That was my first show. This my first pod. It's all types of first happening right now. Big year. Big year. Yeah, for real. Thanks for having me. Nah, man. It was it was great. like a Shout out to Nick, who's here as well.
00:01:39
Speaker
like he Shout out to Manage and Nick. yeah he He asked me to pull up. You asked me to pull up, too. and then I was like, I did not expect what we saw. But if you follow me, I did post it.
00:01:53
Speaker
But please talk, you gotta, we let's just jump into just talking about that whole, like, New York Fashion Week, being part of it, like... Yeah, I mean, to your point, I didn't expect that either.

Keem's Success at New York Fashion Week and Brand Launch

00:02:05
Speaker
Like, I think anybody who knows me will tell you I'm, like, super humble. Like...
00:02:11
Speaker
like I'm just having fun. know what mean? Like, so when I put things out, like, I'm always on to the next, on to the next. And I don't really get to, like, see how many people are tapped in because I'm, I'm like, I'm always on go.
00:02:28
Speaker
and So the only time I really get to see that is every now and then I'll go outside and people would be like, oh, I seen your stuff. But like for that amount of people to come to an event that I threw, that was...
00:02:41
Speaker
like I mean, it's just insane. like I couldn't have imagined that. And um to be a part of New York Fashion Week specifically, I'm from New York, so it's like major that that reception was insane from people in my hometown. So it was like, it's insane, it's crazy. It's crazy. But for people who are not ah familiar with you introduce yourself. Oh, yeah. So my name is Keem. I'm the owner of Keem Studios.
00:03:05
Speaker
um And I'm from Brooklyn, New York. a um I started off in the industry as a stylist. You know, I styled a few people. in the towns and then that kind of like trickled into the professional industry i did some stuff with beats stuff like that and then and then um i kind of put the styling on pause and i wanted to go i wanted to go all in on fashion and designing and um the reception from the fashion industry has been amazing i just started the clothing brand 2023 wow so i'm very new to everything that's happening right now so
00:03:42
Speaker
I'm just as impressed as you are. like that reaction? yeah I'd be having that same reaction. I'm like, oh wait, I did that. You feel me? So it's like, i'm i' I'm genuinely just happy to be here. yeah and then And then everything else is just a blessing. no ah Talk a little bit about the stories you do tell. Because I mean, you know, we were in the story. On your story, you posted somebody reposted your stuff and was talking in Portuguese and said something.
00:04:08
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah, right. So over the weekend.

Cultural Background and Diversity in Keem's Story

00:04:11
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. Go ahead. No, no. I was going to say like what I read and I responded to you. You were like, you know, Portuguese. I'm like, yeah, bro. I'm half a Brazilian. Did not know that. Did not know that. So. Shout out Brazil for sure. Yeah, for real.
00:04:22
Speaker
um But ah somebody who posted, I don't know, what was that like a 2023 piece or was that... ah The pieces that she posted? Yeah. So she had reposted the pinstripe set, which has been our most popular set. um In strong part due to... um SZA who wore recently on tour with Kendrick Lamar on the GNX tour. Yeah. and um And then Pepe from Love Island. He also wore it, which.
00:04:50
Speaker
Yeah. I have never seen Love Island. You and I both. But that's besides the point, man. Shout to Pepe. showed a lot of love. so um But the pinstripe set is what she had posted. And that's something we dropped recently. And then the next post was our... um Martin Luther King set that dropped during MLK Day.
00:05:13
Speaker
And again, it was a whole bunch of Portuguese, but it seemed genuine though. It was, it was. I explained it to you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And after you explained that, was like, oh, okay, okay. So I didn't make a mistake reposting

Telling Black Stories Through Fashion

00:05:24
Speaker
it. Yeah, this person took inspiration from seeing the black stories that you were telling through the MLK piece.
00:05:30
Speaker
And so that's what they were saying in that post of just like how inspired they were because of the quote that was on that piece. Yeah, yeah. Which is i found interesting because it's just like You know a lot of people you know I got shout out to the homie Olu who does ah Olu yeah olu oh I don't know if you've seen his work he does ah He does like little individual like black stories But he's also just like He does that like really immersive thing where it's just like he'll take a story of that you've never heard where it's like um there's this woman who's a black pilot and did a whole entire piece around it so it's the the but what I was just saying is just more of just the idea of telling black stories through clothing you know like literally it's important yeah it is it's important I mean like we as designers have a platform and you know it's up to us to really kind of
00:06:25
Speaker
utilize that and teach people you know because a lot of people don't know about a lot of things in black culture and i hate to alienate people right i'd rather educate and to be able to do that through clothing another blessing you know what i mean so and and for her to point that out is also like you know it lets me know that people are paying attention yeah to not just the pieces but the story behind it as well so Being intentional. Being intentional is important, man. You can't just drop something just to drop. I mean, you can, but then you'll end up like some other brands. I'm not going to. All right, let's hear it. The thing. And, you know, with this, I'm always about being intentional. it
00:07:06
Speaker
And I do think I'd love to point the magnifying glass on anything that is intentional because the the way. Oh, the name of the brand was like ah Progress.
00:07:16
Speaker
Check out Progress. uh by shut our progress yeah um i'll say i'll show you his stuff because it's dope but like the the way of like just being intentional i do feel like you know a lot of these other brands are definitely trying to kind of like shine these lights but it's not as deep as like somebody who actually owns like a brand and actually tells these stories and so you know with you i always feel like your stuff is just amazing I feel like storytelling in any aspect is important, right? Like, I mean, again, you could you could just be dropping anything, but if it doesn't have any substance behind it, it's gonna just like, it's gonna come and go quickly. And then people like having a story to tell as well. So it was like, if I explain the story to you of how this piece was created, then you have conversation piece
00:08:08
Speaker
on and you can now speak to the next person and it's just like it just keeps the conversation going exactly and that's something that keem studios is heavily built on which on community and and if you want i can touch base on that too but a little bit a little bit later because yeah yeah yeah you know you mentioned you mentioned you mentioned you know having stuff on that creates story so i'm gonna you with the question that i ask everybody each week oh and that question is what's your first kick so it's that first pair of sneakers you absolutely need to have

First Fashion Milestone: Buying Huffquakes

00:08:36
Speaker
I actually brought them with me. It's a cool file. Yeah. and
00:08:40
Speaker
Make sure they're together. man. So if know, you know. Yeah, geez, man. So were right here. so yeah if you know, right. So these here are called that. Running and gunning. Huffquakes. Yeah, man, these are air stabs for sure. So these were like the first pair of shoes that I could afford with my own bread. And I actually bought these at the Coliseum in Jamaica when the Coliseum was still around. I think. Yeah, yeah, yeah. My fault. So I was walking around in Soho and then they just broke on me recently. But I had to keep them because it's just like,
00:09:17
Speaker
These is literally like, I remember the day I bought them and I was like so proud and happy. And then air stabs aren't really a thing anymore. they're not. You know, like they kind of, don't, I don't really know the reason behind that either. Cause I think it's a beautiful shoe. pretty sure they'll come out again, but like, hopefully after this, right? Yep. You know, shout out Nike always watching. yeah watching not a airtas ver now yeah air if Nike If Nike's watching, I need another pair for sure.
00:09:44
Speaker
I mean, the running and gunning series, man. i still Do I still have that shirt? I had the shirt, but like that running and gunning series of like the different patterns and stuff like that, I've never seen those air stabs. These? Yeah. I've only seen like the the, I think it was the Air Max 1.
00:10:02
Speaker
and yeah it's crazy because you can see like yo those if you want to hold you can absolutely you like i feel like it's perfectly broken down too it's like scientifically separated you can see every little detail of everything those is insane bro and they lasted very long time yeah i said very long time but these are definitely uh so why did you pick to go all the way to the coliseum to go get it if you're from brooklyn honestly i used to um I have a lot of cousins in Queens. have a lot of homies in Queens. So I was always in Queens. And if you know the Coliseum, it was a place to be like in the 90s or whatever. Like I'm not about to age. I have a homie. if you know what the Coliseum, you know the Coliseum. Well, i was ah I was told to never go there so as i as a as a kid. but all
00:10:51
Speaker
But like me as a kid, it made me want to go a little more. Just its out of curiosity. little I was always a good kid, though. i never got myself in any trouble. but um what's your What's your background, though? As far as like my folks, like my parents, yeah my dad is from Bangladesh. Hey, I'm half.
00:11:06
Speaker
Yeah. Oh, for real? Yeah. Wow. You also got the you got crazy. You got a crazy mix. We both crazy mix. Yo, that's crazy. So my dad's from Bangladesh. My mom's from Haiti. And they met him. As far as I know, they met in Brooklyn.
00:11:19
Speaker
um Yeah, my mom, my mom and dad met.
00:11:23
Speaker
i Imagine but you like your dad is like ah Bro how that happened I have no idea Cause even till this day like when I told people to mix It'd be like how yeah How did they meet like what's the story behind it I'm half Brazilian I'm half Bengali That's insane That's twice you told me like you didn't tell me the other half of me said you was Portuguese before Oriented was Brazilian before, but Bengali's insane. Bro, you talking to me? Yours yours insane, bro. gay man That's crazy. Because like, yeah, I've never heard that. I've never heard.
00:11:54
Speaker
um I've heard somebody else was like half Brazilian, half Bengali before. But like, yeah, I've never heard. But there's this thing where apparently like a bunch of Bangladesh men came to America.
00:12:06
Speaker
And went crazy. Yeah, it went crazy. Nah, oh that's funny. So yeah, but like, um I mean, well, if it's a deep question,

Keem's Multicultural Family Background

00:12:17
Speaker
is your dad still in your life? Yeah, absolutely. Oh, okay.
00:12:20
Speaker
I bought, um... My dad said, nah. He said, nah, nah, nah, nah. I bought him an iPhone recently. and hu Yeah, it was first iPhone. That was dope.
00:12:32
Speaker
Yeah, recently. What was he using before? I don't even know, bro. All I know is them bubbles was green. And it wasn't for me. He was on the Obama phone. He was on the black. Word. You know, I never had one.
00:12:46
Speaker
I do miss the LX though. Remember the sidekick? Yeah, I never got those. I got into the, um I had a T-Mobile wing. because i was like oh i gotta be different this is my my i gotta be different everybody's in a dip set nah i'm in a fucking aesop rock and fucking mf doom like it was so crazy back in the day bro i had an lx and that shit didn't even work i just wanted people to see that i had one i had no service on it but but i was trying to flex with it bro it was so like crazy back in the day oh man what what what was high school like for you
00:13:19
Speaker
I curse on here? Yeah. Bro, it was shit. I tried not to relive those days, bro. For real. like ah oh For a lot of reasons. like it just what So I was born and raised in Brooklyn, but I went to high school in Brentwood. So I went to Brentwood High School.
00:13:35
Speaker
And um I mean, let them tell it. Yo Kim, man, you was one of the coolest people. Yo Kim, this, then, a third. But me being who I am I just didn't have a good time out there. And literally the day after I graduated, I came back to Brooklyn, bro. Yeah. Yeah, it was just wasn't for me. Like, I'm a city boy.
00:13:53
Speaker
You like for me to be out there- Where the hell's Brentwood? Exactly. Bro, exit 53 on the LIE, bro. the hell did you get there? My mom thought it was a better life to be in the suburbs. But little do you know,
00:14:07
Speaker
because there's nothing else to do out there, crime is hot. the dishes Really? People just do dumb shit, bro. Yeah, like Brentwood, I'm good off that. That's crazy. i don't even think I talked to nobody back from high school.
00:14:19
Speaker
Hey, I mean. I can say that confidently. yeah A few people, like a handful, like who actually kept this solid. but High school wasn't really for me. um And that's mainly because like I also had a strip ah strict upbringing too. Being in a Haitian household, like it's a strict upbringing where they want you to be home after school. They don't really want no extracurricular activities.
00:14:40
Speaker
I wasn't really allowed to have a job and stuff like that. yeah um I tell this story often too about like how I think I got into fashion. yeah. yeah And I'll tell it on here if you want. Yeah, yeah. I literally was about to ask that next. um So it actually plays into that. Is it okay if I pop this? hope you've been enjoying this week's episode with Keem.

Patreon.com slash my first kicks. Now let's go back to the episode. um But, um, so in school, right? In middle school, high school, my mom picked my outfits every single day. What?
00:15:39
Speaker
Oh God, bro. My mom picked my fits. Now imagine that, right? You in school, everyone flying, your mom picking your fits and shout out to mom you know it's not that saying she didn't have style but like it wasn't me so what i would do is i would put a change of clothes in my book bed every day according to what she would dress me in and i would kind of like style it up um and i would do that every single day and one day i was looking back like yo how did i get into fashion because i don't come from a fashion background my family's not in the fashion they're not you know i mean so and i was thinking like i really had to like
00:16:14
Speaker
put like a change of fit in my backpack just to be fly. So I feel like that's kind of where it started from. um Where were you copping clothes though? Bro, just the mole. yeah Whatever I could afford, bro. I did not come up with no type of bread. Like we, I mean, I wasn't, you know, like I wasn't poor. Like we were in a bad situation, but again, we didn't come from a fashion background. So like I only had one pair of shoes for the whole school year.
00:16:41
Speaker
One pair of sneakers for the whole school year. Well, what was the shoes? whatever she could afford bro. like I don't even know, like some Shaxx maybe, the um you know or even Starberry, I had Starberry, those were cost effective.

Resourcefulness in Fashion Beginnings

00:16:55
Speaker
25 dollars, you feel me? Yeah, 25, it was 25.
00:16:59
Speaker
Whatever it was, and then in Brooklyn, I'd go to Conway, I'd go to Bobby's, like if you know bobby like if you're from Brooklyn, if you know, you know, like I'm naming some gems right now, again, aging myself. um and yeah like i would just get my clothes and i would just finesse bro finesse however i could uh-huh and people dead thought i was fly yeah never bro
00:17:21
Speaker
You say Starberries, man. You get fits off of Starberries. Off of anything, bro. That is fire. It goes to say like you wear the outfit. Yeah. It's confidence. Bro, I could be wearing whatever. If I walk around like I'm this shit, you can't tell me nothing. No, yeah. but that's I've always said that like and, you know, a lot of people be like, oh, yeah, you dude I'm just like.
00:17:43
Speaker
No. I'm always just like, you know, 50% of flo being fly is that how much you, how, if you feel fly. It's you wear it, bro. If you feel fly. It's how do you wear it. Like, even the Keem Studios pieces, bro, it's not your average, everyday cut and wear, but yeah I wear it confidently and people are receptive to that. you know what saying? it's just like,
00:18:01
Speaker
Whatever you're in, no matter what it is, if it's your style, don't compare yourself to the next person because they say comparison is a thief of joy. It's cliche, but it's true. yeah like Just be a yourself yeah and you'll be surprised. like You will find your crowd or your crowd will find you either or.
00:18:17
Speaker
But definitely confidence goes a long way. where when does the When did you start making your own stuff first? In the hood, bro. So I'll tell you right now, um like ah had this I had to had this jacket, right?
00:18:29
Speaker
It was a denim jacket. It was a Levi jacket. And I had seen someone had a jacket with studs on yeah And I wanted that. So I had asked somebody to do it for me. They were charging, I think, like 200. And that was a lot of money in the time. Like back then, that was a lot of bread. That's a lot of money now. Facts.
00:18:48
Speaker
so um So I was like, nah, I'm not doing that. So I went to M&J Trimming on 36th, somewhere in Midtown. Yeah, fashion. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And um I had picked up the studs myself for like $20, bro, mind you.
00:19:03
Speaker
So I just did it myself. And I was walking around the towns with it and a couple of my peoples. they were rappers, they were local rappers and they were about to do a show and they were like yo, I need that.
00:19:16
Speaker
I was like, I got you. but I got you. You feel me? So i made it for them and then- You told them 200? Nah, nah, nah, I didn't even them. Nah, nah, I even charge them. But it's the homies. You know what was like, I got you. As long as y'all get the materials and stuff like that, got you.
00:19:31
Speaker
And then when their homies started wanting shit, that's when I was like, you know what? don't know you like that. So I started charging like, you know, slowly but surely and seeing, and that's when everything was handmade. And like, I have pictures from back and I'll send it to you if you want to like, put it up. You know what I'm saying?
00:19:49
Speaker
And it's just like, I have stuff from back then. And then it started there and I just never, I never stopped. I just kept going, you know, like subcontinent. I didn't realize I never stopped.
00:20:00
Speaker
up until like this year when ah few people who's actually been around for this long was like yo king you've been doing this for almost 12 years yeah i'm like yo you're right yeah i'm like yo this did not happen overnight no by any means you know what i'm saying so yeah um uh well but like so like that's the start but like when did when what keeps you going to where you like yo like these ideas where did they come from like you know because this is what you what i see now is obviously different from where you first started 100 so like you know who inspires you and then like two things inspire me for real like so my most recent almost everything i dropped recently but
00:20:42
Speaker
I'm heavily inspired by by the um anime culture. yeah So, like, you look at a lot of my pieces, it's all cut. And so I'm wearing a kimono right now.
00:20:52
Speaker
I'm wearing pleated pants as wax. so Like, it just, like, gives a very calm and... Yeah, Ryo Reni Kenshin style. Type shit. Yeah, yeah. Or a samurai champion. Facts. Yeah. fact So many, bro.
00:21:04
Speaker
That's a whole nother pod we could have on just well just shows, brother. Trust me. um And then my son, too, bro. He be watching. Like... before I got here, right? He was on the phone with his friends and he was telling his boys that you his dad has a clothing brand. yeah And like, you know, if you go on YouTube, you could find him here. And instead, like, he's proud to tell his friends that his dad is doing something. yeah You know what I'm saying? So it was like, to hear that, it's like, how can I stop, bro?
00:21:34
Speaker
How can I stop, bro? You feel me? Like, he's, he's proud of me. I'm cool dad. Every dad strives to be cool dad. Yeah. I'm that. You know what saying? So I like, I gotta keep going. um But as far as the ideas, I'm just having fun, bro. I tell people, um and like a lot of people, whatever is controversial to them, but ah I just be like, to be a jack of all trades is one thing, right? like It's cool to have a lot of talents. yeah But I ah truly believe in, you got to find your passion and lock in on one thing.
00:22:08
Speaker
because you never really know how good you are at something until you give it 100%. And if you're a jack of all trades, you're doing everything, you're not really giving anything 100% because you're splitting your time between all these different endeavors. And for me, like I love to cook. I have a cooking Instagram page. a lot of people don't even know about that. Word?
00:22:26
Speaker
Yes. Cooking with Keem? Cook Baking. I was close. Cook Baking. oh Yeah, I was here before Kaya. And then like I do a lot of photography. like i was each on NBC News. um I was doing a lot of photography during the protest with George Floyd yeah and COVID stuff like that.
00:22:43
Speaker
um And like, I do all types of things, but I was like, yo, i need to lock in on one thing. And it wasn't until I did that and I started Kim Studios that things started to project

Challenges and Resilience in Fashion Business

00:22:53
Speaker
in a positive way. So, um yeah, I just tell people like, bro, just like lock in and find your passion. And once you do that, you can never run out of ideas. Yeah. Never. Cause having fun. Yeah, for sure. you having fun.
00:23:06
Speaker
and That's interesting because like a lot of people be like, yeah, you just got lock in. You got to lock in. I do feel like... We do live in this world where a lot of people are aimless, right? Like, yeah you know, like they're just searching for inspiration.
00:23:20
Speaker
and that's okay too. Like, it's not going to like, not everyone knows what their passion is immediately. But I think it's just the fear of pursuing it. Right. Yeah. Amen. Chances make champions.
00:23:34
Speaker
Yeah, for sure. Can you talk about a moment where you felt you experienced failure and it didn't break you? 100%. Yeah, 100%, man. It was um so... um don't know if we know the retail business and how it is, but... But I sold candy.
00:23:49
Speaker
I sold candies in video games. In high school? Huh? in high school sold candy because that was the thing that was not that talking about i worked dylan's candy bar oh i sold candy for real though in retail right um like at the end of the year in q4 everybody knows this is what every business for the most part in q4 from like november to like january february things died down Like money is not being spent. Like you have to save in Q3 for Q4. It just is what it is. And me, as Afri mentioned, I just started this in 2023. So it was my first year experiencing that on my own.
00:24:30
Speaker
i um And it was rough. You know, I had to had to do a couple loans. i had to ask some people in my family for bread. I paid it back, of course. um But it was definitely a moment where I was like,
00:24:45
Speaker
wow, like this is tough. Even a few people on my team, they left at the time too. Understandably, you know, because it's a new business, things are down, you don't really know what's going on. yeah But then as soon as that wave was over,
00:25:01
Speaker
it got crazy yeah so um yeah that was definitely a challenging time in my career and and you live and you learn you know like i know like it's coming up again i know what to expect you what i'm saying like i know what to expect you gotta go hard um and yeah the I mean, you know, we've been going to a lot of events.

Post-COVID Fashion Scene in New York

00:25:25
Speaker
We've been running to each other all the time. All the time. so it love what what is love, bro. What is it about like the New York scene that you've seen grow you know since 2023 and now? Because i feel like it's been bubbling crazy this year. Yeah, I mean, definitely people are trying to make up for the COVID years, right?
00:25:47
Speaker
Like a lot of people are like if you're 36 you're really 33 agree you know and then and it's just like it's just like this year like when did COVID in right like officially or twenty twenty two i want to i say twenty twenty two i don't know it's still here it's the but i just feel like they'll get it it's still here
00:26:19
Speaker
I just feel like um between then and now, the internet plays a major role in that though, right? like I mean, not only have streamers become extremely popular, um just every every kid wants to be entrepreneur. every Everybody wants to be an entrepreneur. I don't see people applying for jobs anymore. you know People are trying to make their own thing, which is a beautiful thing.
00:26:43
Speaker
um And because of that, oh I tell people it's important to show face, especially in New York. If you're in New York, take advantage. Like show face all the time. Like that's why you see me at events. That's why I'm outside because showing face and being relevant is important in keeping your business going.
00:27:00
Speaker
And because of all these new entrepreneurs they're showing face they're outside and um I feel like it's a beautiful thing man and and and that to me has been the biggest transition between 2023 and now and just me being outside and seeing the generation and the population grow yeah um yeah Nah, yeah. I mean, look, we only touched on your showing, but like to get to the point to where you decided to put on a show.
00:27:31
Speaker
Yeah,

Community Support and Unexpected Fashion Show

00:27:32
Speaker
man. What was that thought process to be like? I mean, it's so genuine. Everything that's happened in my career with Keem Studios has been super genuine. Like, I love Sweet Chicks. So how I...
00:27:45
Speaker
how I started there, right? um Pierre Bourne wore- Ayo Pierre. Ayo Pierre, come out here. yeah oh So Pierre Bourne, he wore my hoodie to a performance at Sweet Chick. ah And I was home at the time and someone called me, was like, yo, he's wearing your hoodie.
00:28:04
Speaker
I hopped in a Uber so fast. And mind I've never been a Sweet Chick prior to this. I hopped in an Uber so fast and I, and I got the sweet chick and security was at the door. i was wearing the purple hoodie. He was wearing the purple hoodie. Obviously we'd only want, cause i just started my brand yeah and shout to Bowery showroom.
00:28:22
Speaker
He purchased the hoodie at Bowery showroom. Um, and then he performed at sweet chick cause purple is his favorite color. Um, so I went there, we met, we linked, it was dope.
00:28:35
Speaker
And then I just kept going back to Sweet Chick after that because they treated me like family. So if you fast forward to Fashion Week, um I was at Sweet Chick and I was sitting down with um a couple of the people who are involved at Sweet Chick and they were just like, yo, I think it's time.
00:28:55
Speaker
And I was like, yeah and and that's literally how it happened bro but but but it's just because like i'm there all the time they see me it's all love so it's just like like i'm sure like we could have did an event months ago for whatever but i believe in divine timing like i never pushed the agenda they never pushed the agenda it was just a day where we were just like yo i think it's time yeah and then fashion week came and then boom The I mean look For people who not don't know Well the the whole show Took place in Sweet Chick Sweet Chick is Could maybe fit like 20 people the Well it took place in Ludlow In Ludlow Coffee Which is right next door yeah And it was just their coffee shop And so you can only fit like So much of so many people in there
00:29:48
Speaker
40 seats so we were only able to accommodate 40 seats but there were plus 2 000 rsvps yeah i well how did that happen that's that's what i want to know so like how did how did because like i nick sent me you and nick sent me the link and then i go and i go oh okay and then i click it and i'm like okay 50 people whatever right i'm like okay you know and then i and then And then I saw your story and you're like, oh, a thousand people RSVP. And I'm like, what? And then I look, I look at the link again and then it went to 1500 and went from 1500 to the day of it went 2200. And i turn and I go, I get there. no, no.
00:30:28
Speaker
Uh, no, I was texting Jordan. Shout out Jordan. And I'm like, yo, the ah rsvp says 2200 people are showing up it' So how did we get there? How did we get to 2,200 people?
00:30:42
Speaker
um I mean, so we sent you the RSVP before it was public. like yeah We sent it to all the homies first because, again, you know, like we want to make sure everyone's taken care of.
00:30:53
Speaker
and then as we said before i didn't expect that and shout out to nick again because i know i'd be stressing him out from the side but um they had asked me to close i like damn don't even want i might get in trouble for this but it don't matter bro because we here now right they had asked me to close the rsvp at like 1400 yeah or like like 800 was like 800. it was under thousand they asked to close the it was under a thousand a me to close the rgp And I did it. So if you receive the email saying the event is sold out, it's because I closed the RSVPs because they asked me to. They were like, yo, bro, we can't accommodate.
00:31:29
Speaker
But then I was like, fuck that. i I had a goal in my mind to reach 2,000. two thousand Why? why yeah I don't know, bro. I honestly couldn't tell you. I don't know. Because as you've seen it, it was growing so rapidly. so at first I was like, yo, if this reaches 1,000, that's tough.
00:31:46
Speaker
It reached 1,000. And then we're past 1,000 super fast. was like, maybe we could reach 2,000. and Then it reached 2,000. And then i was like, you know what? I'm going to stop it 2,222. 2,222. Yeah. Because I always see the number 2,222.
00:32:03
Speaker
um So if you've seen my story. Yeah, the story you posted. I posted it with the angel sign because it means you're on the right path. Yeah, yeah. So it was just so, and like the way everything, it was crazy, but shout out Switch. Again, I'm sorry, but you know, I had to, I just, I'd be headstrong about certain things when I have a go, but I knew everyone was going to be straight. yeah it wasn was gonna be It was interesting. i When I came, I pulled up and I saw you take a video of the line and I'm thinking like, so people, you know, you're going to get run down.
00:32:33
Speaker
like I had security. I had security. I was straight. Shut up, Quest. Shut up, Quest. Yo. Yeah. and that But again, I didn't know that many people were tapped in, bro. I just be in my own little bubble creating. there And then even when I'm outside, you will never see me with an entourage. You'll probably see me with Nick and that's it.
00:32:51
Speaker
You know what saying? Like, I don't be with people at all. So it's like, I don't. I'm not here for that. I'm just having fun. yeah I can't say that enough. So when I get that type of reception, even I'm even um i'm a fan too. you know I'm a fan of me too. So I'd be like, wow, that's crazy.
00:33:09
Speaker
You know what I'm saying? And then all the recaps after, man, I definitely learned a thing or two about myself that day. Yeah? What'd you learn? Got motion. First and foremost. You got motion, bud. I know that now.
00:33:23
Speaker
You know what saying? It does. I will say, because, like, I've been, I mean, you got way more motion than me. But, like, for... Cut it out. But I do, i like, it's it is it is a tough reality. to Like, because you're, like, you always... Yeah, that's not what I'm here for. Exactly. Because, like, I've...
00:33:39
Speaker
you know i'll be in you know I went to Black Footwear Forum or something like that. or like I'm pretty sure somebody's going to stop me at Complex Con. Because like I'm so used to nobody saying anything to me. right And now um into that position I'm getting to that position where people are like, yo, I fuck with the podcast. And so...
00:33:58
Speaker
I've been telling people and I've been saying it on here too. I'm terrible at receiving compliments and I don't know if you are the same way. I'm awkward, bro. Yeah, you don't know what to say. I'm awkward for so many reasons, bro.
00:34:08
Speaker
Not only am I just like, like I'm super introverted. like i I don't know if you noticed, but I have a speech impediment. Nah. I stutter. have a stutter.
00:34:20
Speaker
So it's like, I don't even like to talk much. So um when I'm in public, like in around people, I'm not comfortable with, bro. I just be like, eh. But at the same time, like the first- And you still be outside even- course, bro. At the end.
00:34:35
Speaker
we spoke about confidence right yeah my confidence is through the roof yeah um but i gonna say ah the first event after the fashion show i went out um to my boy red's event and that was the first time i pulled up to a spot and people were asking for pictures people were dabbing me up giving me compliments and i was like damn I was like damn like I didn't I didn't know what to do you know what saying so it was it's definitely cool to experience and it still happens now um and it's just it's just it's a crazy reality that I only saw on TV so for that to be
00:35:16
Speaker
my reality is super, super, like, it's a blessing and I don't take it for granted at all. And I look forward to meeting everyone who says hello. You what I'm saying? But if I'm awkward and I'm shy, just know, I warned you.
00:35:29
Speaker
yeah I warned you. you um Like, have you spoken to your parents about this? Like, yes so what do you mean? Because you they're both immigrants. like yeah So, like, what what is their perception of this? Because...
00:35:42
Speaker
You know, yeah one of the biggest things of kids of immigrants story is we are our our parents' dreams. Yeah, want to be lawyers, doctors. My mom wants me to be a priest.
00:35:53
Speaker
Wow, what? Tell me about it. That's the next drop. You got to make a priest, Keem Studio priest outfit. yeah yeah i don't know i mean in the in her perfect world yeah i was supposed to be a piece of a a priest the pastor was supposed to talk to the folk was supposed to you know enlighten people um but that was never the route that i felt i was going in life but um yeah i spoke i used to uh so my mom used to come to all my fashion shows so i um
00:36:25
Speaker
I do college tours, right? Where um I'll go to a college, a college will reach out, they'll invite me to pull up, um and I'll a show at the college, and I'll speak to the students, and yada, yada, yada, right? So I would invite her to pull up to the ones that were...
00:36:42
Speaker
in the area like i went to stony brook i did brooklyn college did it um i did ithaca like things in this area yeah yeah suny now right right right yep and and um um and even cornell like she even came to cornell i believe which is crazy yeah I believe that's an Ivy League school. Yeah, it is.
00:37:02
Speaker
Bro, what? yeah I never went to college. So the only time I went to college when they invited me to go, fire. You got, you're close. You're getting real close to the honorary degree. Trying to get it. You're getting good there. You know, fingers crossed.
00:37:15
Speaker
But yeah, um she's she's definitely super proud. And my dad don't really know. to I mean, he's on social media. He likes the posts. You know, he be commenting. But as long as.
00:37:27
Speaker
On the Obama phone? on the now on the iphone i got him yeah yeah now we up now um but he's happy as long as like i'm happy i'm healthy i'm taking care of the family that you know as long as everyone's good they're happy you know i'm saying like i at the end of the day like i left when i was 17. wow yeah like the day after i graduated high school i went back to brooklyn like i it's a true story like i left i was out of there um and and i i've been on my own ever since wow from from that age yeah bro i've been paying rent since i was 17 bro that's crazy you have like brothers and sisters or anything yeah facts i have an older brother older sister i have a younger brother and like do you also like do y'all talk or
00:38:15
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, nah, I love, I talk to my you younger brother and my older sister a lot. My older sister's like the one who like really keeps me like level-headed. Like she's the one, if I'm ever going through anything, she's the first person

Family Support and Journey to Independence

00:38:30
Speaker
I call. And she's been there for me since day one, like before, like, because you know, we all go through our shit, and yeah right? So she's like out forever. And if you see me at my fashion show, I gave her the biggest hug. And you probably see me crying on her shoulder. the But that real shit. Like, you know, that's my sister. Like, she's always been there for me. And then my little brother, that's my little homie. Or he's the homie. I can't even call him the little homie. He's 26. Fucking yeah, you know what I'm saying? like but
00:38:58
Speaker
But um he's definitely, he's, ah he got a hustler mentality. He's straight, bro. He's straight and life in life and everything. And yeah, i speak to them often. They're definitely super proud. You know, I have them on my close friends. If you're my close friends, you know, I post a lot in there.
00:39:13
Speaker
You do. A lot of success. I was, I was like how did I get in here? What you mean, bro? What you mean? No, for real, though. I was like, I see i seen the green the green circle. I was just like, oh, how'd I get in here?
00:39:23
Speaker
and then it was just like, and I'm seeing, I'm like, oh, this is crazy. And then I'll be responding to y'all like, yo, this is crazy. The emails, I mean. I be trying to tell people i got the craziest email thread, bro, in the game, bro. It's insane. The emails is crazy. I wish we could talk about it. I mean, we can if you want to. Nah, I mean.
00:39:42
Speaker
I won't say too much. I mean, I'm not going to say no names, but... I mean, like, how do you... When you receive an email where just like, hey, we want to style... We want you to style, you know, such and such. SZA. Yeah. Whatever. Right? Because that's already out. Yeah. And then you're like, like, what's the next steps to that? Like, are you just like...
00:39:57
Speaker
Yeah, you know. i mean, the first thing I do is that share it with you guys, right? yeah So it goes back. So here's my, because i get a lot of flack for that too. People tell me I shouldn't be posting all that in my post friends.
00:40:09
Speaker
Right. So here's what it is for me, right? As I said before, you'll never see me with an entourage. Like I'm just not someone who does well with groups and friendships, whatever. um And when I started this thing, I was by myself, but I,
00:40:26
Speaker
when I post on my close friends, I don't feel so alone. You know i'm saying? Because everyone in there has touched me in like, damn, that's crazy. Everyone in there, everyone in there has been a part of my life in some shape or form. So it's, so it's like, I feel comfortable posting that and I trust that you guys aren't going to share that.
00:40:46
Speaker
And then it helps me feel not feel like I'm by myself in this thing. You know i'm saying? Like I get a lot of input from my close friends and people are proud of me. They they be clapping. And those affirmations, like everybody needs affirmations. Like I don't care what nobody says.
00:41:01
Speaker
Like, and if you're not getting affirmations, you could tell yourself positive affirmations in the morning. So important to manifest those things. But those affirmations for someone like me is important. You know I'm saying? like So I post in there, i feel comfortable and it's something i don't think I'm ever going to stop doing no matter how big the request is because it's just, it's how I started and not and and it just makes me feel comfortable. yeah um But in the close friends, I post um all the, all the success, all the, all the, I post the BTS behind what you see that's posted on the page. Yeah.
00:41:37
Speaker
Essentially. Yeah. and Look, I mean, you know, this is what this show is about. it is about giving flowers to people that are so they can smell them still. you know like While they're still here? Yeah, exactly. well you know Flowers for the living. Shout out shout out to the homie. um Well, this is page his page is roses for the living.
00:41:54
Speaker
But the I just think it's just is interesting, too, because, as you know... Me, like if I talk from me watching that, I'm like, that's fire.
00:42:05
Speaker
Right? And so I don't do that because, you know, in my brain, I'm like, I want to tell somebody. Like, I'm like, let me call. But then I also feel bad when I'm like, damn, is this like a flex? But that's the thing. You know, you have people to call.
00:42:19
Speaker
Yeah. I don't have. I'm telling you, I don't. I mean, and it's crazy because. I'm going to get people reach out to me and be like, not what you mean, bro. You could always call me. You could always call me. But there's a difference between having a real friendship yeah yeah and just knowing somebody. You know what I'm saying? And like, we're adults now. Like, i understand people have jobs. People are busy.
00:42:43
Speaker
Like, Me being a brand owner, like I have a lot of free, like I have more time than most. Yeah. Right. And I get that. So not everyone's always going to be able to be there. And I, because of the way I came up, i I often feel like I'm a burden on people for a lot of, for a lot of different reasons, bro. So it was just like,
00:43:05
Speaker
Like for me, like rather than to reach out, like I don't have someone I could be like, like I'll call Nick when shit happens. you know i'm saying? Or, or yeah, you know, that's it, bro. So it was just like I posted my close friends because it feels like people, like I feel like I bet.
00:43:22
Speaker
You know what I'm saying? Like if I bet at people, it'd be dumb. Yeah. And one day, like I do want to throw like a private event for everyone in my close friends. Hey, you heard it here, close friends. Yes, the first time I said that, but I definitely do because my close friends, I mean, they play a major part in my confidence. Yeah, yeah. In my brand, like they keep me going as well as all my followers do. Of course, of course, of course. Yeah. But the people in my close, like my close friends, like my family. For sure.
00:43:48
Speaker
For sure. I mean, look, you got to have you got to have like i always tell people you got to have a strong foundation, you know, like and so however you create that foundation is what's going to keep you, you know, solid. Like if you have no foundation and something bad happens, right, you just you just fallen after that. You know, there's no there's no no way to like, you know, rebound like you're just mm-hmm.
00:44:11
Speaker
It's tough. It's tough, especially as you you know as you say, when you get older. like I was telling my one of my best friends who helps me with this podcast, D, I was just like, it's hard to, when you get older, it's hard to make friends. is now hard It's hard. And you just don't care for it.
00:44:26
Speaker
Yeah, because you're just more focused on like trying to find, trying to make sure you you are a success. Yeah, like I'm cool with having people around me. You know I'm saying? But like, I don't like, i like, shout out to Katelyn, right?
00:44:41
Speaker
have my one boy named Katelyn. He's been around me for 10 plus years. Like that's, that's, that's one of my best friends. I know I can call him if I needed to. Yeah. But I just don't, because it's like, at this age, you're not going to... Or at least I don't feel that way. i think it's more you. It is. It's definitely a me thing, for sure. It's just not how I just came up, bro.
00:45:02
Speaker
Like I said before, since I was 17. So I'm not accustomed to...
00:45:08
Speaker
have like, i' all I know how to do is get to the bag bro. Cause that's all I, that's why I never went to college, none of that. So like for me to, i just, it's just who I am. But I'm a good ass friend though. Shout out to you.
00:45:23
Speaker
So I want to know, you know, you now you feel like you've done the, you've done the, the, the one show and the big one show. So like, how do you top that?
00:45:34
Speaker
Like, do you have, do you have an, I just want to know if you're, you have an idea. is it going to be a sweet chick again? yeah Like, um, we definitely have some ideas in the works. We definitely have some things planned. Um, uh, and also you showed a lot of stuff that like, I mean, I was hearing none of some of this is not even on. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There was a lot of unreleased pieces that was wearing an unreleased piece that everybody wants me to drop.
00:46:02
Speaker
Yes, you were. I want, i even I want. Yeah, I still don't know if I'm go drop it, but ah we shall see. um But yeah, no, we definitely, um definitely, definitely need a bigger venue next time. Because I want to make sure everyone gets the experience, the full experience.
00:46:17
Speaker
Did you see the other like? ah The other POVs? no not the other people do you see like the other show like like kit super did that one on the yeah you know like did did you like take any from inspiration of like yo know next time i'm be like nah so here's the thing right like you know how you know how an artist like a music artist be like no i don't listen to other people's music because i don't want to draw inspiration i'm the same way like i stopped wearing i stopped wearing other cold and i sold my entire closet when i started keem studios um i used to watch like
00:46:52
Speaker
ripped the runway or whatever it was called. And I used to watch all these fashion shows and I stopped. And the main reason for that is just, I just don't want to draw inspiration. So like, I i didn't watch the kids super show till later. yeah yeah um I don't watch any of the shows during Fast Week till later because I just don't want there to be like a subconscious inspiration from that.
00:47:12
Speaker
I want it to be organically me. You know what I'm saying? oh like I'd rather watch an anime and draw inspiration from there for the fashion show than You know, like yeah even the even the thing with the chicken holding waffles. Yeah, bro. That was straight. Just imagination.
00:47:31
Speaker
you know what saying? Like, yeah, show them all. Show it all. Yeah, this guy right here. Yeah, this guy right here a chicken. Which is on the site, right? It's on the site right now. It's on the website right now. So. It's just a chicken holding waffles because that's what they serve at Sweet Chick.
00:47:45
Speaker
And that was just pure, like, I'm a kid at heart and in my mind still. So it was just, like, and image that I found entertaining. And, you know, it took me, like...
00:47:58
Speaker
It didn't take me long to come up with that. But I tell people, like, the reason why i didn't take me long to come up with that cause I have years of experience yeah of just always being creative. So, like, I could tell someone, like, yeah, it took me 10 seconds to come up with shirt.
00:48:11
Speaker
And he'd be like, oh, yeah, but it's not going to cost. I'd be like, yeah, but the reason I could do that is because I've been doing this yeah for 12 plus years. Season vet, man. Season vet. Now we're doing towards the end of the the podcast. I got one last question for you, man, since you messaged you were Since you mentioned you were a kid, I want you to visualize yourself as you were about to get those air stops running and gunnings. Now you're older, you behind your younger self. What would you tell your younger self as he opens that box?
00:48:43
Speaker
keep I mean, don't no regrets. Just, you know, just... i'm I wouldn't tell myself to do anything different.
00:48:54
Speaker
I'll tell you that much. like I feel like I wear my trauma as armor. like It makes me strong. It makes me who I am today. um I would just tell myself, nigga, that was a good deal.
00:49:11
Speaker
You know what I'm saying? like And keep buying like keep going like keep doing what you're doing. You know what I'm saying? don't I wouldn't tell myself anything different, and bro. like i i I love everything that I've learned from all my mistakes.
00:49:26
Speaker
um And it literally led me to where I am today. yeah um So yeah, that's i mean I don't know if that's the answer you were looking for. That's the answer you're giving me, man. There's no right or wrong answer. Oh God, I wouldn't tell myself shit. I'd give myself a pat on the back and be like, yo, those kicks are tough. That's what I'm talking about. i was be still You still cop kicks, though.
00:49:49
Speaker
Oh, absolutely, man. Absolutely. I got all the beer. I don't... The only... So, I'm looking... So, right now, I'm looking for a pair the Papa beers. I have the Mama beers. I fucked them up. I got to clean them. um My LeBron Air Force Ones, the St. Vincent, St.
00:50:05
Speaker
Mary's. The... the um the bubble or the soul is about to pop i got the spike lee um i got the spike lee fire red shoes the fucking tabs came up i have so many shoes that you're talking about the fall apart the this the but fours the the fours not this is like i'm talking about the fours the fours yeah and the tabs came off the tabs fell off them bitches so and even on my ice creams it's starting to fall apart um think you got I think you got to take them you gotta to take them out.
00:50:38
Speaker
you know like they You got to put you got give them some life, bro. They're just sitting in boxes. That's why they're falling apart. I'm sure you keep the same rotation, too. No, I don't. You wear i wear every shoe. I wear every shoe.
00:50:49
Speaker
I'm sure you have over 80 shoes, over 100. I'm at like 250, maybe. And you wear all them. Every single one. All right. I always make sure the bottom row gets hit, hit gets a little love. It's a rotation rotation. I make sure I make sure let everybody know where to find you.

00:51:19
Speaker
Yeah. And you know where to find me, who is Hassan on social medias. All the podcasts, Mind First Kicks Pod. I'm going to kick it to myself, do Patreon, do my little outro. oh Thanks for pulling up, bro. Absolutely, bro. Thanks having me.

I hope you enjoyed this week's episode with Keem. You know, we got to really learn a lot about him, how he started getting into fashion. he started Keem Studios. You know, i saw how rapidly he grew. It's like working with SZA and and a lot of other cool things that he mentions basically because he puts it on his close friends. But If you go to his page, make sure you check out all his work.
00:51:59
Speaker
You will start seeing it everywhere. i believe a lot of people are really tapping in and It was crazy to find out that he's also half Bengali. And, was really cool about a lot of these episodes where, you know, i'm tapping into, you know, I guess my brown side of myself, like getting to peel back that layer because I've always grown up being, you know, Brazilian forward and being black forward.
00:52:28
Speaker
And so, It's been interesting to find that other side of me because like, yeah, when I go to Brazil, it's like, Yeah, a it's crazy. the The culture shocks are always super crazy to me. um Living on a mountain, area everybody's black.
00:52:46
Speaker
Like, yeah, it I think about those times um and hopefully getting to experience it next year. That's the plan. Hopefully going out there, um maybe doing some cool stuff with Sango.
00:53:02
Speaker
I mean, we're planning it. I'm hoping I'm hoping it happens because I'm teasing it on here because maybe you might be able to do some Brazil, like a whole month of just Brazilian artists a but episodes. And I think that would be super different, super cool to bring to this to this podcast and bring to my first kicks and kind of just like explore where we can take this. Right. I think it was just to insanely cool. But I think this episode was super dope and always like the theme for this past week. And if you follow me, it's always been betting on yourself. Like we just recently saw Soleil. He put out his own shoe with the sponge shoe and uh,
00:53:47
Speaker
the big thing about like the biggest thing you can do is just bet on yourself. Like all our ideas, if you're very creative, um they can either go to you or they can go to somebody else. Right.
00:53:59
Speaker
You know, and when you pass on your ideas to somebody else, they can take it and add their idea on top of it. And kind of like waters down what you initially thought would be your idea. Right. So like,
00:54:12
Speaker
For example, if I say if I instead of me doing my first kicks, I, you know, gave it to a company like Complex and I said, Hey, you should do my first kicks. And I pitch it to them.
00:54:23
Speaker
They bring him in a house. Doesn't sound like what I would have thought it would be. Right. ah So I did it myself. We're here at 241 episodes. Right.
00:54:34
Speaker
Hope you really enjoyed this one. I hope you enjoyed Tom's like. 40 episodes in, we're almost at the sixth year mark or the fifth year mark. One of those.
00:54:46
Speaker
i think I think I counted extra when I think about five years. But and I think we are on the fifth where we are on the fifth year, i think um but And anybody can whoever wants to do 50 was it 53 weeks, 52 weeks, just divide divided by how many episodes are. And and I will that would be how many years I've been doing this podcast.
00:55:11
Speaker
But we are at that like if you think about where we started off this year, even if you think about starting one episode one, if you're on the Patreon, you'll you'll see where who was episode one. I like, you know, having my friend on from episode one to where we are now in my conscious efforts to just try to just be really, really intentional with getting better, with upping the aesthetic, with adding these, you know, different things like adding an outro. Like if you listen to the early episodes, I was only doing intros and not in. I was doing intros and outros.
00:55:48
Speaker
But now, you know, I'm adding all this extra stuff. So. I hope you all are enjoying it and I hope you stay to to, you know, to the end to hear, you know, me ramble on at the end. Right. And also do Patreon shout outs. But of course, you got to do the Patreon shout outs. And you can also get shouted out at the end of an episode by signing up for Patreon at patreon.com slash my first kicks.
00:56:12
Speaker
So start out with the shout outs. First off, Adam Neustadar, then Ross Adams, then Jesse, Jesse G, Adam Butler, MSR.
00:56:23
Speaker
And then we have Derek, Fresh Poetic, of course. And most recently, Clox. Really appreciate all of y'all for signing up.
00:56:33
Speaker

00:56:47
Speaker
And if you're listening to this, you're just going to type it in. It's in the description. you ah You might as well just type it in. Right. As you're listening to this, I really appreciate everyone who's been sticking around. Or if you're new, you're old, ah old time, long time listener. If you're a new, this is your first episode.
