Jack Reacher v Sarah Connor -- Built Different & Judgment Day

Yeah, this one got HEATED.

This episode, we’re asking if size really matters. We have some questionable arm measurements (Steve may or may not enter that contest), and a very real discussion about whether Jack Reacher is basically just a human Terminator walking around Tennessee.

But don’t get it twisted—Sarah Connor isn’t just surviving… she’s hunting. We break down her “Hunny Bunny intensity,” her ability to weaponize literally anything, and who her ideal tag team partner would be if things really went off the rails.

And we even welcome a new sponsor - CYBERDYNE. What could possibly go wrong?

Matchup: Sarah Connor vs. Jack Reacher

00:01:38
Speaker
This week, guys, we have a second round matchup between the Terminator Terminator, Sarah Muscle Mommy Connor versus the closest thing to a Terminator a human can possibly get, Jack Reacher.
00:01:52
Speaker
Sarah Connor advanced against Indiana Jones in her last matchup, and Jack Reacher had a bye because, like Jason Bourne, this guy is an absolute beast. Two weeks in a row, I think we've had new entrants and they're absolute monsters. So the fact that these guys are in the same bracket is huge. But I got news for Jack Reacher. He's in for a battle here this week. So he needs to think about right now. And let me ask you guys, what's your history with both of these characters?
00:02:19
Speaker
I agree with you. I think Jack Reacher is definitely in for a battle against Sarah Connor here. He's not going to steamroll her. I've less experience with Jack Reacher just because of the TV series, you know, being so long and a huge fan of the Terminator series. And you've got to love seeing a strong female in the tournament.
00:02:37
Speaker
Absolutely. Yeah. Pretty much the same with Sarah Connor, just growing up watching the Terminator movies. She was always a bad-ass Jack Reacher. probably first encountered him at the grocery store, the cover of men's health magazine.
00:02:51
Speaker
Alan Richson is an absolute beast. Yeah, honestly, I didn't know who he was until he was cast as as Jack Reacher, but I didn't know who he was. You've never State? i never saw had in blue mountain state I don't remember seeing Blue Mountain State. I've heard a lot about Blue Mountain State being very funny. And it's speaking about funny, and you know the the character is is quite comedic. it's It's kind of cool that he brings that to the to the character. And he seems like a really nice guy, Alan Richson. Yeah.
00:03:19
Speaker
Yeah. Hey, before we get too far, let me, I want to play a clip here because I think it's hilarious. I won't even give it any yeah buildup. ID Neely is checking in under the name Sarah Connor and paying for an adjoining room using the name Starlin Castro.
00:03:34
Speaker
Must be for the Hulk. Starlin Castro played for the Yankees six or seven years ago. And Sarah Connor? don't give a shit. That is a clip from Reacher season two, episode one, when Reacher and his partner Neely checked into a hotel using aliases. And obviously you gathered that Neely used the alias of Sarah Connor.
00:03:55
Speaker
And did you guys recognize the voice of the person talking? I did not. He said, I don't give a shit. It was Robert Patrick, the literal Terminator, the T-1000 from Terminator 2. Oh, that's awesome. What a cool Easter egg. about stellar So I thought that's a good way to kick things off with it with a nice little crossover that we didn't even plan, but we should have. That's very cool.
00:04:17
Speaker
Wait a minute. Is that meta? Yeah, we still don't know what meta is, do we? I think that's meta. I'm going to say it one time and it's going to be right. One one day. Hey, Jordan, you want to have a message for our best listeners?

Jack Reacher: Character Analysis

00:04:55
Speaker
All right, let's go to the tail of the tape. And we're going to start with our new contestant, Jack Reacher. Jack Reacher's debut was in 2022 in season one of the TV series Reacher, portrayed by Alan Richen.
00:05:09
Speaker
Fight stats. The character is about six five as we learned in the series and also in the books. That's consistent with the Lee Child books. And he's typically between 225 pounds and pounds across the book series.
00:05:25
Speaker
Absolute monster. And his age, he but he's about 37 years old in season one. So that's also consistent with the Reacher novels. Before you go, two quick clarifications. Yes. Number one, we are only talking about the Alan Ritson Reacher in this episode. Tom Cruise can fuck off. We don't need him.
00:05:41
Speaker
Correct. Number two, ridiculously fun fact. So you mentioned that Reacher is six five But Alan Ritson was initially denied the role of Reacher. Why was that?
00:05:52
Speaker
because he was too small. Can you believe someone telling Alan Ritson he's too small? Alan Ritson is six three And after the backlash with Tom Cruise playing Reacher and all of these like absolute nerds who are super into Reacher, they almost denied Alan Ritson for being six three I mean, there's not a lot of guys that can play it. There's, I mean, The Rock, right? I can't watch another Rock movie. He's close to 50 years old. Dave Bautista, he is 50. Yeah, there's just not a lot of guys like that.
00:06:19
Speaker
All right, Reacher's home turf. He's fighting out of nowhere, literally nowhere. He has no home address, no home base. He's a drifter. He called himself a hobo and in one episode, in fact. So yeah, he's from Parts Unknown.
00:06:32
Speaker
Signature move. Anything come to mind for this? feel like it's a choke slam. I feel like every season you see this guy grabbing someone by the throat and just like showing you how big his meaty forearms are and like threatening them.
00:06:45
Speaker
What about bitch slap? I've seen him slap a couple of people in yeah in a few episodes, which is hilarious. He's got some repeatable moves for sure. How about a calm explanation of what's about to happen followed by that exact scenario? I like it when he does that too.
00:07:01
Speaker
Yeah. He talks the talk and walks the walk. And tons of head butts. Love that. a Vibe check. For a vibe check I got, he's the biggest guy in the room and usually the smartest.
00:07:12
Speaker
Yeah. He, he sticks up for the little guy. He's Sherlock Holmes on anabolic steroids. Oh, that's good. Well done, sir. Now let's talk about kill count.
00:07:24
Speaker
I know you guys are ready for this. Has Jordan won nearly every, every episode so far? I think so. Okay. think We need you to really buckle down under my belt. Okay. I'm ready. Okay.
00:07:34
Speaker
Kill count. Remember there's three episodes. I'm sorry. Three seasons of Reacher. So we're going to consider all those. You go fast, Jordan. All right. I feel really not confident. Um, 55, no 60. I'm going 60. Okay. 60. Hmm. Three seasons, 55, 55. So 55 and 60.
00:07:49
Speaker
Yeah. three seasons fifty five fifty five so fifty five and sixty yeah seriously The estimated kill count across all three seasons is 74 kills. Oh, shit. I tried to price is right, you, and I paid the price. Yeah. So Jordan wins that one.
00:08:11
Speaker
Oh, you're absolutely screwed, Chris. I don't think I can come back. No. But you can try hard. Yeah. All that matters is that everyone's having fun. Do I get a participation trophy at the end of the year? You might, yeah.
00:08:23
Speaker
So one thing I wanted to talk about here before we switch over to Sarah Connor, ah you mentioned Tom Cruise. So let me let's talk about the Tom Cruise controversy for just about 30 seconds. Maybe this is meta too, but the creators of Reacher, the series, knew all about the controversy of Tom Cruise being cast in the movies. He was way too small. The hardcore Jack Reacher fans didn't like it. So what they did was literally the first 30 seconds of the Reacher series tells you everything you need to know.
00:08:52
Speaker
There's this guy and he's getting violent with his girlfriend in public. Okay. It's like maybe outside a gas station or convenience store or something like that. Reacher happens to be walking by and he just stares at this dude.
00:09:04
Speaker
He just stops and stares. That's it. He didn't do anything. He didn't say anything. He didn't even change the expression on his face. At first the guy mouths off and he's like, Hey, what, what the hell you want? Asshole. And then he keeps looking at Reacher, who didn't move, and he realizes how enormous this dude is, and he immediately backs down and apologizes to Reacher and says, oh yeah, sorry, that that won't happen again. So it took about 10 seconds of that show to address the biggest complaint by far that fans had with the Tom Cruise version. And, you know, in the books, Reacher's size isn't just a very minor detail. It's like one of the main plot points. People change their behavior the second they see this guy. And the TV series established that instantly, like the very first scene, which I thought was pretty cool.
00:09:48
Speaker
intimidation tactics and his size has to have some kind of psychological effect on his opponents. So, yeah you know, ah put that in the books. Did you guys read any of the books? Did not.
00:09:59
Speaker
No, I did not. I actually did. i had read these before the Tom Cruise version even, and and I don't know if I read 10 or 15 or how many I read, but there's tons of them. And i do remember one of the, one of the lines in one of the books is that Jack Reacher realized that he's the guy that other people see and walk to the other side of the street to cross. So, yeah, so that's exactly who that character is.
00:10:26
Speaker
And going off of how big he is to another fun fact, it's not just a gimmick, but the camera work in this TV show, they used forced perspective and different types of framing to try and make him look even bigger. So as they're filming this, they have this in mind. We need to make this guy look as humongous as possible.
00:10:44
Speaker
And they even did some like cool camera tricks to try and get that done. i who's does Do you think his arms are as big as mine? ah Let's see him. see I mean, I'm wearing a flannel shirt right now, so you can't really i can't flex or anything. Oh,
00:11:00
Speaker
okay. All right, let's go to the tail of tape for Sarah Connor.

Sarah Connor: Character Analysis

00:11:08
Speaker
We already did this before, so we'll zip through it, but you know that her debut was 1984 in The Terminator, portrayed by Linda Hamilton.
00:11:17
Speaker
Her fight stats, she's about 5'5", 120 pounds. And remember, we raised this as an interesting point. The character was supposed to be 19 years old. Linda Hamilton was 28 at the time. And I don't think they really made it a point to say that she was a teenager at that time because it would have been silly. But she was absolutely supposed to be 19 years old as the character.
00:11:39
Speaker
Home turf. She was fighting out of Los Angeles, California. Signature move. I like what Chris said last episode. He said her her move was running for her life, which I thought was awesome. It helps in this tournament.
00:11:52
Speaker
It doesn't hurt. Vibe check. I think we said something like a traumatized mother turned warrior, something like that makes sense to me. Berserker babe. That's good too. She has the, you know, one of the best character arcs in the tournament in film history. So really cool to think about that.
00:12:09
Speaker
Man, I always think of these things that I think are very interesting. And when you said that, could two of the best character arcs of any character in our entire tournament be Sarah Connor and Walter White?
00:12:22
Speaker
Definitely. They almost were both completely helpless when we first met them. And they turned into absolute killers and monsters. Those are two good picks. Sarah Connor and Walter White went from zero to a hundred. they Absolutely. Their their' stories.
00:12:36
Speaker
I can't wait for the Walter White episode. I can't, I can't imagine that he's physically going to be able to beat somebody like Jack Reacher, Jason Bourne, even Sarah Connor. But I can't wait to talk about that character.
00:12:47
Speaker
Yeah. You just wait. I'm a huge fan. He's going to use his mind yeah more than his strength. All right. Back to the deadly Dommy mommy. Kill count, please. can i can i get Can I get it back? Yeah, yeah. I'm going let you do the kill count. Okay, what you can go first, even.
00:13:03
Speaker
What's her kill count? Wait, wait, no. it's I don't even remember it from last time we did. Oh, wait, no, no, no. I know, I know. It's two. Oh, yeah, you got it. Nice. And one was an assisted suicide. Yeah.
00:13:18
Speaker
No, there's one other thing I wanted to mention ah about Sarah Connor. This has got to be the biggest size discrepancy of any matchup and in the tournament, right? Oh yeah. Yeah. I mean, it band versus Brian Mills. Mills is like six, three, 200 and something pounds. And we said that Sarah Connor and it man was similar in weight. It may even be smaller. So yeah, yeah but for sure, for sure. This is easily on par with that. If not, I mean, it's six, five to five, five. So ah a foot in height and pretty much double the weight Sarah Connor one 20 and reaches up to two 50. So yeah.
00:13:51
Speaker
If those stats are what you say they are, I'm having a hard time reconciling the fact that Alan Richardson and Liam Neeson are pretty much the same height and weight because they look nothing like each other. Yeah. Liam Neeson is pretty gangly.
00:14:05
Speaker
Carries it all on the limbs.
00:14:24
Speaker
This episode of Fictional FC is brought to you by Cyberdyne Systems. At Cyberdyne, we believe the future is bright, extremely bright, possibly nuclear bright. From advanced microprocessors to fully autonomous defense networks, Cyberdyne is pushing humanity forward into a bold new era where machines handle the difficult decisions.
00:14:44
Speaker
Cyberdyne Systems, what could possibly go wrong?
00:14:55
Speaker
All right. You want to go to the character breakdowns? Let's hit it. Let's start with Jack Reacher. going to talk about his battle resume here. We do get snippets. And in fact, in season two, we even see flashbacks.
00:15:06
Speaker
He's a former U.S. Army military police leading a special investigations unit with a decorated record, and that's been referenced in the series. He has a reputation as the guy you call when things are already out of hand. So we do know that about Jack Reacher.
00:15:21
Speaker
Character time period. We do see flashbacks, like I just mentioned, but the main time period is pretty much modern day. So post-Iraq, Afghanistan era. Let's talk about his background, his training and his skillset really quickly here.
00:15:33
Speaker
We don't hear a specific rundown of his training that I heard, but we do know that there are several martial arts that can be identified just by his fights. And I do like looking into that a little bit. Jordan, are you familiar with military combatives training? Not in the slightest.
00:15:49
Speaker
Okay. All right. That seems to be the base that I found from Keyboard Warriors online. It's consistent with what MP training in the U.S. Army would have looked like, you know, then and now. And it seems like it's a mix of boxing, wrestling, even Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and CQC, which we have referenced a handful of time, close quarter combat.
00:16:13
Speaker
hang on. Did you just say Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Uh-oh. Oh, boy. They're using this martial art to train the warriors of our country. That says a lot. yeah i think Yes. I feel like you see some Krav Maga in there too. you see Definitely.
00:16:29
Speaker
see kick a dude to the balls. You see some like maybe some FMA weapons type stuff. Like you'll see him going up against people and he'll be grabbing improvised objects to use as weapons. So I think there's a wide array of combatives that he reaches into. sand du I don't know if any of that is training with the 110th Military Police Special Investigation Unit.
00:16:49
Speaker
But that's the name of the unit, the one that I guess he even founded. Jack Reacher founded it? Yeah. Oh, okay. That's a nice little snippet. he though He's obviously pretty good with hand-to-hand. I wouldn't say he's on par with like Jason Bourne or anyone, maybe not even Brian Mills, purely because he seems like he uses his strength a lot rather than finesse. so yeah But still, hand-to-hand, close quarters stuff is out of this world.
00:17:16
Speaker
He's the Brock Lesnar of this tournament, I think. Yeah. Yeah. He's, he's, he's tackling, he's tackling people through walls and yeah throwing people through windows. The skillset you're going to see in something that he brings up is he has 150 soft cases, like perfect conviction rate. So that's really where his head is at. That's his specialty. He he's really Sherlock Holmes vibes here.
00:17:37
Speaker
Totally. And he just happens to be a monster on top of that. What about preferred weapons? The deagle baby. Season one, the Desert Eagle. When Roscoe gives him that just hand cannon of a pistol and he just bop, bop, bop, popping off.
00:17:53
Speaker
Pretty badass. All right, cool. Absolutely cartoonish. Other preferred weapon. Season two, a homemade pipe bomb. That's a fucking psychotic way to break into someone's house. Like you're the IRA.

Jack Reacher: Combat Progression

00:18:05
Speaker
Overall preferred weapons, I'd say improvised weapons. Anything he can get his hands on. You see that a lot with these types of guys, these special ops guys. It seems like they're very good at improvising. No, that's what I was going to say too. He's like a lot like Robert McCall where he's very comfortable taking his opponent's weapon and using it against him.
00:18:22
Speaker
Speaking of opponents, let's talk about a sampling of opponents for Jack Reacher. He's got a pretty good array. i feel like there's a progression of his opponents that we see in season one, two, and three.
00:18:34
Speaker
What I'm seeing is season one, lot of goons, a lot of people coming up to him who act like they can't tell he's 100 pounds bigger than they are and they'll just pick fights for no reason. Season two, you get a little bit of that, but I feel like you see some henchmen with some more actual training.
00:18:48
Speaker
And then season three, you have some pretty hardcore bad guys, fully legit training. And then you even got Polly, who is way bigger than Reacher is. So you really see like every season, they get bigger and bigger.
00:19:00
Speaker
Let's run the gauntlet. Definitely need an intro for this section. Run the gauntlet, run the gauntlet, run the gauntlet. And then some heavy metal music. Then like ah an explosion at the end. Yeah. Good, good work.
00:19:13
Speaker
Run the gauntlet, run the gauntlet, run the gauntlet, run the gauntlet, run the gauntlet, run the gauntlet.
00:19:25
Speaker
Keyboard carnage. So have you found any good quotes, comments, reviews for Jack Reacher? um I just have one here. It seems very basic. It seemed to be a catch all for me. Every bad guy in this show should just apologize immediately.
00:19:40
Speaker
Here's a Reddit review. Reacher is super corny with weak dialogue, stilted acting, and unrealistic plot lines, but I love it. Reacher talks like a character in a late 1950s cop show. I agree with all that. It's just very enjoyable to watch, no matter how many one-liners and corny corny shit there is.
00:19:58
Speaker
Going back to what Steve said about the thugs that he faces, someone just commenting, i love it when Reacher tells the thugs exactly what he's going to do to them. They all laugh, and then he does it to them. That is entertaining.
00:20:10
Speaker
They've gone too far segment scenes that seem way too impossible to survive or unrealistic. I'm going to throw this one out here. I don't know if it's realistic or not, but it's just plain goofy season two, Reacher's chasing after this dude on foot who's trying to escape him in his car.
00:20:28
Speaker
He comes across a propane barbecue and throws it through the dude's windshield to stop his car. How did that stop a car? Why was a barbecue just sitting there? I don't even think it had a propane tank. What the hell was that scene?
00:20:42
Speaker
I did see one here that was maybe a little too far. Somebody took ah an actual crowbar and held it with two hands like a baseball bat and swung that thing as hard as he could, hit him in the face with the crowbar.
00:20:55
Speaker
He falls in a swimming pool and while he's underwater, literally drowning, and and this other dude is down holding him under, he snaps out of it. Could anybody survive a crowbar to the face like that? And then also, oh, by the way, he's being held underwater by full grown adult. As much as I like the action, I thought that went too far. Fair, fair. For your collection.
00:21:15
Speaker
Yeah. Part of the storyline is that he has zero possessions, which I think is a little bit unnecessary, to be honest. But the one thing that he continues to carry in the storyline is his toothbrush. So maybe I would take the toothbrush.
00:21:29
Speaker
That's a good one. That's good one. That's consistent. All right. This one, I'm channeling my inner James Bond. He must have a Q in his life or someone like that. Because season three, when he infiltrates the baddies, what does he pop out of the heel of his boot? A hidden miniature phone. That was hilarious. I want that.
00:21:49
Speaker
That's awesome. I did like that. Yeah. Yippee-ki-yay motherfucker segment. I feel like he's got a lot of them. So many one-liners. He might have more one-liners than like any Arnold Schwarzenegger character.
00:22:02
Speaker
Oh, absolutely. That's the whole 50s cop vibe that person was talking about. Yep. I've got an all-time favorite quote here, and it's actually from season one, episode one. So it's when the son of the dude with the big company running the town, this dude is mean-mugging Reacher. Reacher walks up to him.
00:22:18
Speaker
You looking for a dance partner? Because the last person who eyeballed me like that was a woman down in Panama when I was stationed at Fort Sherman, and she wanted to dance the tambourito with me. Do you want to dance the tambourito with me?
00:22:30
Speaker
Absolutely ridiculous. So ridiculous. yeah i have one. He's i think he's in a bar and he's getting this this really big dude with the beard is ah standing up to him and ah reaches talking his shit and they they're going back and forth.
00:22:45
Speaker
This kind of goes to Reacher's analytical skills as well. But, you know, he says, boxer, kind of registering the fact that this guy has the stance of a boxer. He looks like a boxer. he And he says, the thing about boxing, too many rules. And then he kicks him in the nuts.
00:23:03
Speaker
Yeah. McGar. So firstly, his analytical skills. And then secondly, he doesn't play by the rules. We've talked about that before. Yep. I like that one. That's a good one.
00:23:14
Speaker
There's also the prison bathroom scene. i couldn't, it was, man, it's tough to count. if Five or six of the inmates enter the bathroom and, you know, we all know what's about to happen here. And he looks at them all and just says, if you boys knew what was about to happen to you, you'd leave now.
00:23:29
Speaker
And then he goes and just demolishes all of them. That's the kind of bravado I like. Hey, I have a bonus category for Reacher here for the gauntlet, if that's all right. Let's hear it. And I want to put you guys on the spot. I have actually looked through this. So I am putting you guys on the spot here with no notice whatsoever, but let's do it anyway.
00:23:47
Speaker
I've tabbed Reacher as one of the top three strongest characters in the entire tournament. So assuming you agree with me on that, you don't have to, but let's say you are.
00:23:58
Speaker
Who would you guys put in that same elite top three of the entire tournament? I've got one. Okay. The hound. Good one. Absolutely ginormous. Good one. He, I didn't have him as top three, but I did consider him. That's a good one.
00:24:11
Speaker
He's six, eight, a little over 300 pounds, super strong. Like I'm, I'm putting them up there. The sword he carries must, must weigh a hundred pounds. I'm going go with Joel Miller. That dude is tough.
00:24:25
Speaker
Old man strength. Old man strength. I'm going to give you my other two. the The Hound was very close for me. I actually, if I did a top five, I think he would be in it. My other two, I have Dutch from The pre Predator.
00:24:37
Speaker
course. He's got to be in there. Now I sound stupid. And the other one I have is kind of, I'm i'm curious to see how familiar you guys are with this character, if at all. I have Amleth from the Northmen and he's like his giant beast of a Viking warrior. And he's an absolute monster. Like if you think Reacher looks like a beast, wait till you see this dude wearing like Viking type attire and he's shirtless all the time and he's got like, you know, his hair and everything. So yeah, anyway, those are the three that I have with maybe the Hound as a honorable mention for mine.
00:25:10
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. We've got the Viking, the hound, these old men me medieval type guys. Yeah. They're very scary. Yeah. yeah Except back, you know, back in those days, five foot eight was big. Yeah. Well, I haven't researched the actual size of Amleth or, well, we know the hound is like six, seven or six, eight, but I don't, i haven't done Amleth yet. so maybe Yeah.
00:25:32
Speaker
Maybe, maybe Amleth comes out he's like five, six, 160 pounds. Yeah. We don't know yet. I just looked him up. He's six, four. Oh, okay, great. I don't have a weight on him yet, but he looks, he's muscular, but pretty lean.
00:25:44
Speaker
Okay. By comparison, the hound's like 300 pounds, 6'8", 6'9". Yeah, I get it. Yeah, that makes sense. Back to Reacher. I mean, I guess if you need proof that he's a top 1% in strength and power, there's one scene where he's loading two dead bodies in the trunk of a car and they don't quite fit. In order to squeeze both those bodies in, with his bare hands now, he just snaps one of the guy's legs. He hyperextends it at the knee and just snaps it with his bare hands. That's got to be incredible power.
00:26:20
Speaker
All right, let's switch to Sarah.

Sarah Connor's Skills

00:26:22
Speaker
All right, we're running the gauntlet. No, no, no, we're not. Character breakdown fest. God damn it.
00:26:33
Speaker
Um, let's talk about her previous victory. We know she beat Indiana Jones. We already said that. I thought it was kind of an upset, especially considering Indy had a much, much higher kill count than Sarah might be the lowest in the tournament. And Indy's was insane for an archeologist. But what do you guys think in terms of how did she win? Why did she stand out to you?
00:26:53
Speaker
I think despite the low kill count, she's perfectly trained to handle almost all of the competitors in the tournament. And ah I think with her ability in guerrilla warfare, surprise tactics and planning ahead as well, was just so far and above Indiana Jones's abilities. that realistically I couldn't pick Indiana Jones over her just because, you know, in addition to all of Sarah's skills, Indiana Jones was always more reactive that than, you know, planning ways to take out opponents. I think Sarah Connor has the upper leg there.
00:27:29
Speaker
Yeah, think you're right. Indy's a little too goofy. She's serious. She's competent. She's a paramilitary legend. She effectively leads an entire paramilitary anti-Terminator resistance force.
00:27:41
Speaker
Yes, her son technically leads it, but she gets the ball rolling. She builds everything from the ground up and she learns all of this. i mean, you saw her driving her Vespa in the first movie and now here she is battling robots. Like,
00:27:54
Speaker
Yeah, think about this. Intense training, guerrilla warfare, survival instincts, absolutely ruthless mindset. She just refuses to die. These are the exact things that we look for in an FFC contender.
00:28:07
Speaker
So she ticked all those boxes for me. And Indiana Jones, while he's an elite adventurer in the context of FFC, I don't think it's even close. You know, there's a category that we sometimes ask, were we firing blanks with this pick?
00:28:22
Speaker
In other words, were there any listeners that were upset with our pick? And I have to say that we did get some feedback here. Budinsky Banjo, one of our good listeners, speculated that Indy's luck, while we highlighted that as a negative, maybe he says it should have been considered more seriously as a positive, that he relies on this luck.
00:28:43
Speaker
Luck is a skill. We talked about someone... a superhero where luck was their superhero. And they thought that Indy's luck was just a testament to, or an extension of his skill.
00:28:54
Speaker
So decent point. Yeah, definitely a good point. And um I think back sometimes to Filthy Phil's special segment that he gave for us during the Jax Teller versus Man with No Name episode, which I thought was really great because he broke down Jax Teller's attributes almost as if it was like Dungeons and Dragons style, like,
00:29:16
Speaker
the different attributes that a character has. And when we think of those like fantasy role-playing games, luck can be an attribute that you have. And so it is cool to think of it in that way, but you know, in some cases luck runs out.
00:29:29
Speaker
And I think Sarah Connor is so resilient that she could power through any of the the lucky situations that Indiana Jones finds himself in. Yeah.
00:29:40
Speaker
All right. Let's run the gauntlet 2.0. run the garuntlet run the garuntlet Run the gauntlet, run the gauntlet, run the gauntlet, run the gauntlet, the gauntlet.
00:29:55
Speaker
Question number one, at what age could we take her? Steve, it sounded like you had a take on Sarah Connor. I have a take. um We know that a Terminator couldn't take Sarah Connor when she was 19.
00:30:07
Speaker
But let's get nuts here. I could take her at 19. She had no skills at that time. I don't know how she survived a goddamn Terminator, but she could not do it against me. I guarantee that.
00:30:18
Speaker
What's your signature move? Charisma. All right, next category, Hell in a Cell. Sarah Connor versus Jack Reacher. Oh my God, this is like a train wreck. Yeah, that you wouldn't be able to look away from.
00:30:33
Speaker
i don't know if any of the combat sport and MMA fans out there have seen this on their YouTube feeds, but there are some questionable promotions in Russia that do some really insane fights. And they put put women up against men.
00:30:51
Speaker
I would say 50-50, the women beat the men, which is awesome. In this case, Sarah Connor is getting beaten to an absolute pulp. She can't escape the cage and just the size, height, weight advantage of of Reacher. There's no way she's even winning once. Reacher takes this 10 out of 10 times.
00:31:10
Speaker
Yeah, I have nothing to add. it's may It is mayhem. It's not close. This is, it's ugly. 10 out of 10. Zero, sorry. Well, for Sarah, zero out of 10. Yeah, by far the most mismatched fight yet.
00:31:21
Speaker
All right, here's another one. Casting couch. Could she play the other person's role? So how would she do playing Jack Reacher? Linda Hamilton playing Jack Reacher. Okay.
00:31:32
Speaker
Yeah, i'll all right, I'll leave this one off. Reacher's entire gimmick, we just talked about this, is center around centered around him being the biggest guy in the in the room. But let's get creative. Have you seen the recent Equalizer series?
00:31:44
Speaker
Guess who plays the equalizer? Oh, queen Latifah. Yeah, exactly. So maybe with some rewrites, we could see like prime Linda Hamilton playing like a version of the character. Now, obviously not Jack Reacher from the books, but maybe like an apprentice of his or something like that. And if that's the case, you know, she has the intensity to pull that off. So let's get creative and I'll, and I'll figure out a way to make it work.
00:32:07
Speaker
Oh, no, no way. There's not a fucking a chance here. All right. So not only is this whole thing that he's humongous, His other whole thing is that he's witty and charismatic, which she is not in the slightest.
00:32:19
Speaker
I see this going over like a lead balloon. Okay. Also fair. But for her to redeem herself, who here should she have killed? Who should she have killed in the movie series who she'd never got the chance to?
00:32:31
Speaker
I feel like we're going to be tech talking about the same person. why do you guys want to take this? Creeper? Yeah. Go for it. um But how about anybody from that asylum? And the first one on the list is Douglas, the creepy guy who licked her face. Douglas, anybody who licks someone's face when they're trying to sleep or they're in a medical induced coma, you got to go.
00:32:52
Speaker
So creepy. Hey, who would be an ideal tag team partner? We're talking WWF wrestling style. Who's her partner and what is their team name?
00:33:03
Speaker
all right. I've got a pretty good one for this. So who else is a guerrilla warfare expert, but is also bringing 80 vibes here? And that's going to be John Rambo.
00:33:14
Speaker
So we're going to have Sarah Connor and John Rambo and their team name, headbands and leg warmers. Oh, I like it. That's so good. Well done. I like it.
00:33:26
Speaker
I've got one here. The 80s style WWF tag team partner has to be Ellen Ripley from Alien. These two, they basically invented that prototype for the tough, unstoppable female action hero. And I'm just going to say without those two, there may not be Lara Croft, Furiosa, Beatrix Kiddo. There might not be any of those characters. So I think that's ah that's a natural tag team. And WWF would capitalize on it by putting them together. And they would be like like the first female tag team to headline WrestleMania or something. That's how popular they'd be. And I would call them the mothers of mayhem.
00:33:59
Speaker
Very, very good. That's just like name.
00:34:08
Speaker
All right, guys, let's try to pick some scenes, some skills that we see favorite moments, because now it's time to start thinking about who's going to win this thing. Any favorite moments or signature scenes that you guys want to bring up right away for either of these?
00:34:23
Speaker
I've got one that stands out to me with Reacher. We know he's a big brute. We know he beats people down. but he's also pretty damn ruthless. So season two, we got that hit man in the hospital bed there and he comes out there and to absolutely torture this guy. He's got a catheter in there. He's blowing his dick up to try and torture him to give him information. He's absolutely wild.
00:34:44
Speaker
He gives him an embolism by shooting air into his IV, which apparently definitely will not kill you with that amount of air, but still pretty savage of him. Like there was no beat down there. There was just kind of ruthless torture going on.
00:34:57
Speaker
I mean, who the heck looks at a guy in a hospital bed and is like, how should i torture him? Oh, balloon his dick. that's That's obviously where I'm going here. like You gotta be a pretty perverse dude to pull that out.
00:35:09
Speaker
And I think there's a good compare and contrast contrast there between him and Sarah Connor. Because Sarah Connor did almost the same thing, thinking on her feet, with the syringe of Roto-Rooter. that she put in the neck of the other dude as she was escaping the hospital. So both of those seem like, you know, they both have syringes. They're both using something like that. And they're just really playing with people.
00:35:30
Speaker
Pretty cool. Both good. I'll add one for Reacher. That's a pretty good scene. He's in his prison cell. They just were put into prison and they were put into the general population, which it wasn't supposed to be. They were supposed to be more in protective cusd custody. Three of these lifers show up and they start terrorizing Reacher's bunkmate.
00:35:48
Speaker
He kind of lets it happen. He's laying on the bunk up up top. And all of a sudden he just calmly drops down off the bunk and tells him that they can leave now or else they'll be carried out in a bucket.
00:35:59
Speaker
I don't know what that means specifically, but it kind of is is frightening to me. Anyway, he counts to three and before the guy can even process what's happening, he just demolishes this dude with a couple of brutal elbows to the head. Not only is it an elbow to the head, but he's got the head on the metal bed frame so that there's no give whatsoever. And it's that. elbow in the bed frame, like sandwiching his head. And it's just brutal. gives him a couple of those. And he immediately goes down so bad and so brutal that the other two inmates, the partners of of that dude who just got his ass kicked.
00:36:31
Speaker
They just immediately said they don't want any part of this. And they even gave Reacher their aviators kind of as a peace offering. And then they kind of slunk out the back and dragged their buddy out of there.
00:36:42
Speaker
So great. Yeah, everyone talks about the other prison scene when they're in the bathroom and he takes out like eight dudes. He's like a tornado running through each of them. Some guy has a shiv too, I think. And like, you know, he just brushes it off like it's nothing. And he's just kicking people in the chest, bouncing heads off of sinks. Yeah, he's he's an absolute monster. Yeah.
00:37:04
Speaker
Now we shouldn't dismiss Sarah here because likewise, i feel like monster is a good word to describe her. And there's an awesome scene that when I was researching for our first episode with her, when she beat Indiana, I totally forgot about this, but I call this the comeback scene and it's just absolutely incredible.
00:37:23
Speaker
Terminator Dark Fate. okay We have Grace, who's like a futuristic super soldier that was sent. And then we have Danny, who's the future leader of the Resistance to replace John Connor.
00:37:34
Speaker
They're trapped on this bridge and they're completely surrounded by all these Terminators and it's absolutely hopeless. And they're about to get wiped out. And all of a sudden, a truck comes ripping through like a goddamn tornado towards the two, Grace and and Danny. And the door swings open.
00:37:50
Speaker
It's an incredible scene. And out steps a 62-year-old Sarah Connor. In full action hero slow motion. And she just starts unloading this ridiculous firepower. Different types of explosives. And then this bazooka looking thing. Maybe Jordan knows what it is. I don't know. But I call it a bazooka. She held on her shoulder. And it's just chaos. She tears a hole through the entire battlefield. So that Grace and Dany are...
00:38:14
Speaker
ultimately able to escape. What I love this isn't just great nostalgia, like, oh, wow, Sarah Connor came back and helped. No, just the opposite. This scene told me that she never left. She's been out there the entire time hunting hunting down these Terminators. And if a Terminator could be killed, she would have hundreds of kills, especially with what I just saw in that comeback scene as a 62-year-old.
00:38:38
Speaker
Yeah, those Terminators can survive Sarah Connor's onslaught, but Jack Reacher is human. Yeah. Even though he's pretty close to a Terminator, I don't know if he's a surviving a grenade launcher to the chest. So yeah, if she brings as much firepower to her fight with Jack Reacher as she does with the Terminators, Reacher's going to be in for a bad time. Yeah, that's a great point.
00:38:59
Speaker
Hey, remember the um home invasion scene in Terminator 2?

Comparing Iconic Scenes

00:39:03
Speaker
Yes. Where she breaks in and gets Miles, what's his name? Miles miles Dyson. The heir to the vacuum fortune?
00:39:12
Speaker
Yes. But you remember that scene. I want to play this clip for you. And all I want you to do is get her intensity, get the vibe, right? And put that in your head for a minute. And then I'm going to follow it up with something else.
00:39:26
Speaker
Nobody fucking move. Don't hurt my daddy. Get it on the floor, bitch. Fucking down now. Oh, God. pretty goddamn intense, right? Very intense. Okay. Now I'm going to play another clip.
00:39:38
Speaker
I want you to see if you recognize it. I know Chris will. Also, tell me if they have a similar vibe. Any of you fucking pigs move! I'm going to execute every one of your motherfuckers!
00:39:53
Speaker
So good. Pulp Fiction reference there. Honey Bunny. That sounds so, so similar. It's funny. Yeah. She brings a level of intensity, I think, that matches Jack Reacher's charisma, especially when he's fighting against, i don't know, prison thugs and, you know, the yeah the town the town mayor's little yeah preppy son. Mm-hmm. His ne'er do well son. Yeah. Yeah.
00:40:19
Speaker
She brings that intensity that you played in that scene to the fight. She's could definitely come out on top. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, physically she might be nothing compared to Reacher. We all know who's going to take this in a cage match, right? We said zero to 10 in a one-on-one hand to hand, but in the context of the FFC, I think she has a really good starting point to win this battle, right? She gets a letter.
00:40:41
Speaker
She knows that she has to find and not be found by someone. And that is absolutely her home base right there. She knows how to run, hide, evade big Terminator guys all day long, just like him. yeah She's got her asymmetrical gorilla tactics that she can pull out. Like if I'm thinking we're seeing right now, Terminator one and Terminator two, but she lures the Terminators into a factory, uses her environment, homemade pipe bombs, to take them down and defeat a bigger enemy.
00:41:07
Speaker
So she's that strategic, type of person that I think is going to be able to pull together against a physically and otherwise larger opponent. Yeah. Great breakdown. Yeah. Yeah. So let's let's take that even farther and start talking about X factor or, and, or path to victory for these two, what stands out the most and what makes them the most dangerous against their opponent. Yeah. I think Jordan really hit it on the head with that last breakdown. And I would love to see someone who is on paper, the underdog,
00:41:38
Speaker
take out someone as big as as Jack Reacher, purely with the tactical, analytical, strategic skills, which I really think Sarah Connor could do.
00:41:49
Speaker
You know, what if she, you know, got a ah needle to the neck and and took him out that way? And yeah I don't think Reacher has the skills to combat something like that. It doesn't seem like he comes across people that are doing that to him. A lot of his confrontations are face to face, out in the open, um and he kind of can see it coming. If he doesn't see it, what what happens then? And I think that's Sarah's path to victory is just the element of surprise. Yeah.
00:42:19
Speaker
So let me ah throw a counter out there and talk a little bit about Reacher. and I think he has a different type of dominance. He's a lot like Robert McCall. Both guys calmly tell the aggressors or their opponents exactly what's about to happen to them, and then they carry it out.
00:42:34
Speaker
Think about that scene and in The Equalizer where McCall is tied to a chair, and he still tells the guys, hey, you're getting too close. I think it was Equalizer 2. Was it 2 or 3? Anyway. 3. It was 3. He's tied to a chair.
00:42:46
Speaker
And he still tells the guys, hey, you're getting too close. He's literally restrained and surrounded by these armed guys, and he still calmly just warns them. And of course, a few seconds later, he proves that he meant every word, and and it comes true, right? I think Reacher has that same energy, same ability. Remember that motel parking lot scene where he's cornered by four dudes, and one of them plunks him in the back of the head with a beer can?
00:43:09
Speaker
It triggers Reacher a little bit, so he kind of turns around. He says, I'm about to break the hands of three drunks. You know, they laugh at him and they're like, yeah, this guy can't count. There's four of us. Reacher says, yeah, well, someone's got to drive to the hospital. And that characteristic is really unique to just a few characters in the FFC. But the thing to note is they're all super elite. That shines a very positive light, I think, on Jack Reacher and his really unique skill set.
00:43:37
Speaker
I love that scene. Put that in the one line as a yippee-ki-yay motherfuckers. Yeah, there's so many good ones. I think before we go any further, and it's not necessarily next an X factor or a path to victory for Sarah Connor, but can we talk about her reliance on other people?
00:43:53
Speaker
Definitely in the first film, what's what's the guy's name? Kyle Reese. Kyle Reese. And then in the second film, Arnie obviously comes back as the T-800 good guy. But certainly her reliance on other people, I think is a big factor here for Sarah Connor. It's maybe her Achilles heel and we see it. And I, you know, I spoke about this earlier in the episode that we, I wanted to cover this a little bit, but the scene at the end of Terminator 2, it's so, so great. It really builds and builds and the tension is just so high at the end. She gets cornered by the T-1000. He's about to kill her and T-800 Arnie comes around of nowhere and you know the the two terminators then are fighting each other while she is able to run away and then at the very very end she's shooting him with a shotgun over and over and over again and it's almost pushing him to into that vat of molten lava and she runs out a bullets right at the end and who who comes and saves her ass it's arnie very very cool ending to the film but maybe should have been sarah connor's kill that would have been really cool to see yeah
00:44:57
Speaker
But again, she's relying on on terminators to help her and time traveling assassins. That's a really great point. And I think that was perfect timing to add that part because it's something that we definitely have to consider, even though she's an absolute monster and deserves to be in this tournament.
00:45:14
Speaker
That's something we have to consider. Before we dismiss her, i do want to bring up something that I'll call Sarah's X factor because I think we're really close to coming up with

Final Decision: Sarah Connor vs. Jack Reacher

00:45:23
Speaker
a verdict here. So on the show, we always talk about strength of schedule.
00:45:26
Speaker
A guy might have a huge kill count. Indiana Jones, but if he's killing these unimpressive jabronis, as we say, it just doesn't carry the same weight. So we have to ask ourselves a couple questions.
00:45:37
Speaker
One, how can Jack Reacher kill Sarah Connor? And two, how can Sarah Connor kill Jack Reacher? Because here's the thing. Sarah Connor just spent 30 years being hunted by Terminators, literal killing machines from the future.
00:45:52
Speaker
If they couldn't kill her, how the fuck is Jack Reacher going to kill her? And if Sarah Connor has figured out how to defeat Terminators, how can she not defeat Jack Reacher?
00:46:03
Speaker
When I think about an X-Factor, it's that she's already faced, survived, and defeated way bigger and stronger and way worse than rick Jack Reacher. So, I mean, there's just no more powerful X-Factor than that for anybody, I think.
00:46:20
Speaker
Now, it's time to settle the score.
00:46:32
Speaker
All right. I've heard a lot of great points from everyone. And i know in the back of my mind, I'm leaning one way. I think I've got an opinion. Are you guys ready to deliver a verdict? I think I'm ready. I'm ready. Yeah.
00:46:43
Speaker
Okay. To me, this is a matchup made in heaven. And Steve really brought that point home at the end of the open discussion there in that Sarah Connor has had 30 years of experience against Terminators, evading them, destroying them. i think that's why her kill count is so low is because... You can't kill a Terminator, but you can get pretty freaking close as she has has shown throughout the films. And again, Jack Reacher, like I said at the beginning, the closest thing to a Terminator a human can possibly get. At first glance, Sarah Connor is a huge underdog here. Obviously the height and weight disadvantage, and she got completely steamrolled in the Hell in the Cell. But given her experience, she is perfectly equipped to to take Reacher out.
00:47:29
Speaker
What I love about this matchup is that we kind of have a David versus Goliath scenario. And you know who came out on top in that matchup? Jack Reacher to me is is just kind of another special ops guy. But saying that, there's really nothing that special about him. He's a big brute. He he has some good hand to hand. But can we compare him to the the other elites that we have in the FFC that we've spoken about in previous episodes? I don't think so. And if we can't compare him to those elites, then certainly I think Sarah Connor could very easily take him out.
00:48:04
Speaker
I think we're gonna have to go with Sarah Connor. Oh, shit. Wow. That's bold. You know, we've spoken about it before. I think Jack Reacher is going up against some somewhat mediocre jabronis. Sarah Connor faces killer robots from the future and has survived for 30 years. I think her skill set in guerrilla warfare, surprise tactics, improvised weapons, i think even weaponry, you know,
00:48:29
Speaker
guns, grenade launchers, bombs. I think she brings an intensity that Jack Reacher just would not see coming. Wow. Okay. We have one vote for Sarah Connor and zero for Jack Reacher. So with all that being said, I'm obviously putting Jack Reacher on notice and I'm putting the other special ops elite guys like Rambo on notice. oh man, this guy's got a vendetta against Rambo and Jack Reacher's the victim of this whole thing. Oh my God. Okay.
00:49:01
Speaker
Jordan. Well, Chris, that was a big delivery. And I don't know if I disagree. See walking in I knew he's the biggest and baddest guy around. How could he not win?
00:49:12
Speaker
But I think about it. Reacher relies on time to observe, to deduce. He's a Sherlock Holmes type at the heart. He also, does he really know how to hide? In every season, he gets picked up at the police or someone, and it doesn't take up long to place his background as the John Doe and know that he's actually Jack Reacher.
00:49:29
Speaker
You look at Sarah Connor, she's a ghost, and they get the letters. I think that's going to be to her advantage. Even more than that, Reacher's got a moral code. He wants to protect others and bystanders, whereas Connor has a single mindset, save her son, save humanity. We talked about the home invasion. She doesn't care about the collateral damage.
00:49:47
Speaker
Here's how I think it's going to happen. Sarah is going to kidnap children or do some crazy shit like that and lure Reacher in because we know Reacher and his morals. He's going to have to show up and walk right into it, but it won't work. As we said, he's a Sherlock Holmes type.
00:50:02
Speaker
Reacher's an expert deducer. He's going to see through the plot and come up with his own plan and deliver it with really witty candor. He's got the best hand to hand. He has the best weapons training. He's the military guy here.
00:50:14
Speaker
I just don't see her taking this. I'm giving this to Jack Reacher. He's an elite level. It's not just his size. At first I thought it was a gimmick, but after watching all these creature shows, I'm like, this guy's the real deal. He's the full package. My vote goes to Jack.
00:50:27
Speaker
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a contest here. We have one vote for Sarah Connor and one for Jack Reacher. So I guess I get to break that tie. Two excellent arguments, by the way, and I am totally into both of them. I can see both of them happening. And I don't usually spell out a particular scenario because I think it's too um hypothetical. But in this case, I think I know exactly what's going to happen for both of them.
00:50:52
Speaker
So let me let me talk through through this thing. When I think about Sarah Connor, At her most dangerous, we've discussed the Dyson home invasion in Terminator 2. That's the moment where she's not just surviving anymore, she's the hunter. And that's how she'd have to fight in the FFC.
00:51:08
Speaker
So she does what she's done for 30 years against enemies way stronger than her. She studies him. By him, I mean Jack Reacher, of course. She learns his routine. And let's face it, Jack Reacher's routine, as you guys kind of hinted at, isn't exactly hard to predict in some cases. Cheap roadside motels, cash payments, no phone to trace, things like that. So she's able to watch him from a distance, just like she did with Dyson. She maps out exits because Sarah Connor doesn't fight fair fights. She plans this kill and tries to end this thing before it ever starts. Now, inside this room, Reacher's not sitting there like a helpless sitting duck. He's expecting an ambush.
00:51:46
Speaker
This is the FFC, okay? Remember, there was a motel scene with Roscoe, and we kind of see this whole scenario. Reacher is fully expecting a surprise attack. So for him, it's not a surprise at all.
00:52:00
Speaker
We see him create a makeshift door barricades. He inserts little toothpicks and door hinges. He's securing curtains with clips from coat hangers. And he's even moving beds around. And he said something like, don't sleep where your head's expected to be. So he's kind of shifting the beds around. And keep in mind, he's on the seventh floor and he's still taking these precautions. So if Sarah Connor puts a red laser dot on Reacher like she did Dyson, he will know it.
00:52:24
Speaker
Not only will is will he recognize the danger because he's expecting it, but he's going to use that danger to gather information. The angle of the beam, the height of the shot, and within seconds he's already figuring out here, you know, where it's coming from. So Connor's going to have no choice but to resort to her plan B, exactly like she did with Dyson, and that's storming the room.

But this isn't Miles Dyson, this is Jack Reacher. Reacher has spent his entire life walking into ambushes and turning them into close quarters fights. So the moment she crosses the threshold, he steps in inside the reach of the rifle and he shoves the barrel past his shoulder. He traps the weapon before she's able to fire it, probably with some kind of brutal headbutt, which we've seen, you know, many times before. Elbow to the jaw, elbow to the ribs. And once ah Reacher gets his hands on you, I mean, we already know what's going to happen. So he doesn't need to be stronger or smarter than a Terminator. Jack Reacher just needs to be stronger and smarter than Sarah Connor.

And I say Reacher wins. Really great breakdown. I love that visual of them fighting and getting into that situation. Yeah, this one made sense. I don't like thinking about a hypothetical blow by blow of how it's going to happen. But we saw examples of both of these. And I think that you can overlay them. And I think it makes sense.

Very, very cool. You know, split decision here, which I feel is very fitting for the matchup. Honestly, it was so close. And for an elite level fighter like Jack Reacher to get this close to being defeated, I think is pretty fun. So hopefully it was ah it was a fun listen for for everyone out there.

Man, you guys had some great arguments. Definitely arguments for both fighters to win, as we always do. But this one was, I had to sweat this one out. Bottom line, though, Jack Reacher advances.

And that's a goddamn fact. And that's a goddamn fact. Run the gauntlet. Run the gauntlet. Run the gauntlet. Run the gauntlet. Run the gauntlet. Run the gauntlet.
