Victory Celebration and Significance

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hey, everyone. Welcome in, Wolves fans. Happy Monday. I'm so excited. I can't speak properly because we did it, guys. The team came through. I was feeling so scared going into this weekend. I'm not gonna lie. I think we had those fears coming into last week, but oh my word. We came through with a sooner victory over Aston Villa. um Having family members that support the Villa and many of you guys out there, I'm sure do too. It makes me extra happy.
00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
that we come out of this, not only with a huge, huge three points in the relegation battle, but against a team that means so much to so many of us, one of the oldest rival or rivalries, and I'm just, yeah, I'm sure like many of you, i' I was ecstatic yesterday, I was so happy, and when that second goal went in particularly, I was,
00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
over the moon but my word we once again at times made it we never felt really a threat however that first half we should have been out of reach we should have been so far ahead we had some brilliant chances four or five glorious chances and quite how we only went in one goal up at half time is still beyond me I've watched been watching stuff back and it still baffles me that we didn't manage to put More in the net earlier on so it felt kind of typical going into that half time that That we were just potentially gonna throw it away again, and it was all gonna be it it was gonna be another step too far especially knowing that you know Villa do I he you know the villa manager is not make afraid to make changes he is quite sharp and we saw it for changes at halftime and
00:01:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
in ah in a desperation move to get things back on track. Four sets of fresh legs, again, more than anything else, has a massive impact. And um it was a worry. It was a worry. So they definitely came into it more in the second half. However,
00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, we held on, we held on and we came through with the vital finisher as well to make it two nil. However, that was so late in the game. We'd pretty much nailed it

Bellegarde's Outstanding Performance

00:02:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
anyway. It looked like we were going to come good because the defense was solid all game long. But I am sure like many of you, I was most surprised in the most glorious way though, by my man of the match. And I'm sure many of you guys out there as well, Jean-Rikna Bellegarde.
00:02:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
My word everyone, where did that come from? We have been saying all season long that, you know, everyone's like, he's not good enough. What does he do? He doesn't do anything. Everyone was very scared of Gomez being out for this game with the suspension of who was going to come in. A lot of people saying it should have been Doyle.
00:02:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I said in ah one of our pre-matches that I had a feeling it was going to be Belegarde. He'd been coming on more often than Doyle in the last few games as the replacement sub for various positions and he's got the slightly more athletic build that Pereira seems to want whenever he talks about wanting a midfielder, wanting someone with an athleticism to them.
00:03:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
and a bit more physicality. um he Obviously, he likes Andre and Gomez for elements of that too, but so we were all a bit worried. We were all a bit worried. And I've said myself, going into you know various games this season, my biggest confusion over Belegarde is, where does he play? What is his position? Because we've seen him all over the park, except really, apart from maybe once very early on in his wolf's career,
00:03:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
in the middle where it seems is his home. Like he was put where he's meant to be. And he astounded everyone. Not only did he grab a glorious goal with a great run, but the passing, I mean, some beautiful passes to play in Gedge at various points who could have had two or three goals himself. and Battling, sliding tackles, getting stuck in, physically winning the ball back, high up the pitch again and again.
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
and really just he was everywhere, he was a machine and you know it was interesting to think that prayer has been going on and on about wanting another midfielder, arguably we still do, we want more depth but that we haven't got the kind of player that he wants and we speak about people taking their chances and taking their opportunity and my word JRB did just that because has he arguably put in a claim to say that hey you were asking for another midfielder but I'm right here and I could have done this all along this is what I'm capable of because you know even even with
00:04:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
their injuries and you know mid-week game Villa are still a very very solid premiership side and he showed that he can he can get in there and get stuck in and Andre was doing his quiet thing in the background mopping up at the back as he does but um and quietly going about his usual task but it was Belegarde that was the really progressive one and and really getting stuck in higher up and putting in some great forward passes, like really direct, really authoritative driving forward, making runs himself, scoring the goal and just putting in an absolute mammoth performance. And I was, I was impressed. I was really impressed. And I'm sure many people, I hope many people were the same because he's been undervalued for a very long time. I hope he's got more of this in his locker that, you know,
00:05:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he's given the opportunity potentially to get more in that spot, whether it's coming on more often as a sub in midfield to give some some rest to the likes of Gomez when he's on a yellow card, because he is always liable to get another sending off at some point or, you know,
00:06:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
get a bit in in the rotation a bit more or whatever it is he's he's staked to claim he's surely staked to claim to say i deserve to play in this role more often because if he keeps if he puts in more performances like that then why shouldn't he and it does make you question then who, you know, how's it going to be going forward? Does he just go back to, does Gomez immediately come back in? Or if, you know, Belegard stays, because that is a performance that that that says, I should be in the next game.
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if that's the case, though, which one would drop Andre or Gomez? Now I'm not saying he, he will, but surely that is the kind of performance that as a manager, you're like, what, how can I, how do I drop someone who's just put in that kind of performance? I don't know. I don't know. I'm just a bit bawling, but, uh, and as playing devil's advocate as we do, because it is a, it is a question. He staked a claim and arguably we should see more of him after that. And a bad look for Tommy Doyle. I mean, he came on.
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
came on late in the game and, you know, he did okay. He does Tommy Doyle things. But arguably, he's probably thinking, my word, Bellagarde got the shot that I've been wanting, um because he had a couple of chances before, had that not great performance against Forrest, I think it was. And since then, it's been kind of relegated back to the bench. ah What must he be thinking right now, knowing that Bellagarde has surpassed him on that ladder? And this you know he came on and helped close out the game, I think, pretty solidly. But he just hasn't got that pace. He hasn't got that physicality.
00:07:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
He has the passing range, but he's not got that athleticism that seems to be the key to what Vittle wants. So it's tough times for Tommy, but he is a professional, at least, and a good player that's not going to cause a fuss, I think, in terms of still being on the bench and taking the opportunities when he can. But Belegarde, what a guy.
00:08:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was the day for J.R.B. And we have to say as well, though, that around that whole thing performance, though, the defense was solid. We saw Totti come back in. We've been crying out for him to come back from injury. A lot of people are thinking, how on earth are we at a point where Totti is the one we're craving the most? But he came back in.
00:08:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we saw again what I had actually preached in some of the the previous episodes that I thought Buena would be the one to drop back to the bench despite Doc not being kind of true and experienced centre back but and lo and behold it was it was Buena that dropped to the bench and Agbadou who went into the centre of the three And I thought they looked really solid as a unit. I know that we, um and we'll touch on transfer issues in a moment, but I know that we still want a centre back to, you know, potentially take Doc's spot and then you'd have Totti, Agbadoo and someone else in that three.

Defensive Strength and Player Returns

00:09:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
But for now, as they were, it was a pretty solid performance and they looked
00:09:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
good and I liked Agbadou in the middle. Again, another kind of solid performance from him. Again, some wayward passing, that's not his strong suit and hopefully, I mean, I know he's a bit of an older, come in, you know, he's he's not one of the youngest centre backs we've ever had.
00:09:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
but hopefully still some improvements there he can make but overall i'll take it despite some wayward passing at times because he just he's a he's a mountain he gets himself in the way some more great blocks some more great tackles just and anticipation as well more than once just cutting out opportunities before they came and totty doing the same cutting out ah cutting out people before they can really get anything done and then driving forward again and and being direct and really helping push up the pitch. Doing Totti things just makes me happy and so yeah really good to see Totti back and it's interesting that under Vitor the three clean sheets that Vitor Pereira has had have all had Totti in the lineup and Totti comes back and gets you know gets that clean sheet so
00:10:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully he stays fit and Agbadou does and maybe we get someone else in too but for now it seems that Doc is ahead of Bueno. I'm going to guess for a mixture of experience, his heading ability and ah a bit more physical strength than Bueno and you know in terms of being on that right hand side as well. So i'm go I'm going to guess it's experience, physicality and and that sheer heading ability that he's got because he's he's ah He's a lot more solid in the air, I think. Especially with Agbadoo in the middle to help mop things up. I think it's a pretty solid group for now, for now, given what we've got.
00:11:05

Global Sports Podcast Network
All right guys, so we touched on the performance of Belegard with a cracking goal and a great performance. The defense briefly and and Totti's return to the lineup and the clean sheets. A couple of other, well, at least one honorable mention I want to touch on. Sarabia, again, has been in the last ah two or three starting lineups. And I know some people kind of shaking their heads over why he's still getting the chance.
00:12:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I, you all know, if you've listened to previous episodes, I have a soft spot for Surabia. I do think he is technically very good. I think he sees the game in a different way. I keep saying that really he needs to be in that kind of number 10 role, like, you know, in the hole because, and here's why he showed it in the goal, that little through ball that he does his ability to see the runs and play some really neat, narrow passes. That's where he can thrive. and he showed that in that moment but also actually by his standards despite you know not being a winger had I think a pretty solid game did several times played some really
00:12:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
really dangerous balls like that had some and but actually got stuck in a bit more physically as well and I thought by you know the standards of I mean everyone performed pretty well yesterday but I thought Sarabia had a solid game um so i'm I'm glad that he started to get hold of that opportunity if anything I think the likes of Gedge being up front someone like him being up front alongside kuya and saabia I think that helped Sarabia because of those through balls, because of the way he runs. Larsen is happy to come back and kind of try and hold the ball. However, ineffectively he's done that at times. He's not as quick. He's not as nimble. He's not making those off the shoulder runs in the same way as Gedge wants to do it from deeper and get behind people.
00:13:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And so I think in many ways that actually helped Sarabia's game because it it makes the defenders have to move away from him and allow more plate ah space for for those through balls and things. so I think that was actually a more of a winning combo so it'd be interesting to see what happens with him but I touched on a while ago the the fact that when Sarabi was that injured I had a feeling that Vitor was gonna gun aside with him I don't know quite what it is that brought that out of me again the experience maybe the technical ability
00:14:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Vitor leans towards that. That's again why we see Doc in there. I'm not talking about the technical ability there, but in terms of the spirit experience and um that that aspect he brings to the game. But we shall see. We shall see. But yeah, a shout out to Serabia from me. because yeah I just feel bad that he gets picked on and I like him. I like him, guys. But if we don't see it. Again, I don't, a bit like with Belegard, I don't think we see him played in the positions that really suit his game because we he's not a winger, but that's where we see him the most. um I think he's more of a number 10. I think in that hole where he's allowed to drift and then let people make runs ahead of him that he can play dangerous balls in. I think that's his that's his zone if he can get in that spot more often.

Konye's Contract and Future Speculations

00:14:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, other big news from the night of course was Konye not only the goal which he fought for all game and helped sign off a great night, also the contract extension that came shortly after the game on the same night. We've been discussing the contract, it's been back and forth on that for a while.
00:15:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was finally announced and there was a lot of clips shared on social media afterwards if you missed it of his actions at the game to the crowd about when he came off to Matt Hobbs signaling that he wanted to sign a contract and pointing to the turf and all this kind of thing. However, however, and this may be just me and you might all begrudge me on this and not believe, not think it's a thing. Is it just me that felt that the entire game until he got his goal It just felt like once again, for me, he, whilst he had a better performance generally overall, which is not that hard to do given he'd had some really lackluster ones previously, he seemed once again to be so focused on doing so much of it himself. It's going to sound really weird considering that he got the second goal and he's just signed a new contract, but I was still concerned over, there was a few times where, you know, he, he didn't get the ball he wanted and he's literally leaping in the air.
00:16:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
for people to give in the pass and looking, you know, like fiery about it. The Belegard goal is 12 minutes in. We've taken the lead against Villa at home. Crowd goes crazy. He doesn't rejoice like everyone else at that point. I don't know if anyone else noticed that. You can go back and look. He wanted that ball played across to him.
00:16:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Belegard scores, everyone else rushes off and is excited and he kind of drops his arms and just kind of like strolls in the middle of the box because it didn't come his way for the goal that he's been so frantically chasing for the last what three four games at least.
00:16:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And it felt like then with the second goal and the actions after it, it almost felt like he wanted a win and a goal to do the contract signing, to not sign it when he'd been underperforming and not getting the goal. It felt like it felt like he wanted it to be part of a night, part of a good performance, part of a goal celebration, part of something like that.
00:17:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then also a little bit sadder, we, and we know it's the nature of the business of the contracts, right? That it's not necessarily about saying he is going to stay here for another four and a half years or five and a half years, but stating that, you know, it's assuring the club that he's not only getting a reward for pay for a short period that there's going to be.
00:17:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah potentially higher value if he goes, although there's a release contract in there which hasn't been confirmed. in The discussion is pre all of this whether it was going to be a relegation release contract. It's not been confirmed that that is the case in the new statement and I've seen some sources stating recently that it's more just a ah fee that kicks in from June saying at least 62.5 million.
00:17:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
a release clause which is less than we would expect so I'm hoping that's still relegation linked and I'm tracing up trying to chase up see if we can get confirmation on that. However, digressing a little bit the point was it just felt for me again a little bit selfish in the manner in which he, and and and I get that Strikas are a little bit selfish, not that he's a striker, but you know superstars that want to be the be all and end of. But there were points again in the game where for me he ran into dead ends so many times running into like two or three, four players trying to do it all himself instead of playing it off to people who could have then created something in more open space.
00:18:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And just, you know, I feel like you guys are gonna hate me for saying it, but that's what I saw, that's what I felt, and the goal just seemed to lift all of that away for a moment. For me, the goal detracts a bit from the rest of the stuff in the game that I saw. You can hate me for it, but in terms of the way he was the way he was getting anxious about not getting the ball in situations, the way he drove forward into like dead ends of four people when he could have played other people in,
00:19:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then the nature of the the the fact that the contractors come immediately on the back of that one game. And in in the in the interview that you watch where he's discussing the contract, they do a post contract interview thing.
00:19:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
He even states in there about the fact that, you know, he states obviously all the usual stuff about living in the club and how it's time here and all that kind of stuff. But he quite specifically mentions about the club, it it helping provide him opportunities for the future and about making sure that the club is rewarded ah yeah if and when he like when he moves. I can't remember the exact phrasing, but very much the gist was,
00:19:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's an opportunity. This is about my stepping stone opportunity. And this is about the club getting money. When I go, he stated it himself, he stated what we all know is literally a, this is just so we get business done. And the fact that it kicks in from June, this, this clause, this release clause means that, yeah, it's a summer move. I mean, we can't, I will be astounded.
00:20:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
astounded if despite this contract, he is still here in September, August, September time. Like we, we all know, right? The contract, it sounds glorious, but he's still going. I'd be amazed if he's still here next season because everything about that performance for me and everything about the contract announcement and the way it was handled. And for me, the celebrations on the pitch with the whole point, like loving the club and everything,
00:20:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Didn't change the fact he's going in the summer. Didn't change it for me. And for me, I hope that now he's got what he wanted in terms of this release clause and in terms of the financial package or whatever else. And he's finally got to do it off the back of a win and a goal. I really hope now he can put some of the the frustrations aside on the pitch in terms of what we've seen with the you know the demeanor,
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
the behaviors, the waving his arms, looking frustrated and and kind of trying to do it all himself and and moaning at other people when he's been the one that's made a mistake, as in last week when he did a hideous pass to Huang and and he tried to blame it on Huang. I just, I really hope now he can we can push all this contract stuff behind him once the window closes.
00:21:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he can focus on doing what he was doing before and just get over all of this now. get Let's get past it. Fine. You're going to go in the summer. Fine. But do it now. Get stuck in for and help Wolf push up the table for what's left of the season. Because you've shown that we've shown now that, again, that we are good enough to compete against anyone in the league on our day when they work together as a team, because that was a team performance all round from the people that started, from the people that came off the bench.
00:21:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
everyone put in a shift, more of that please, more of that please and we will be fine. And the results around us kind of were good as well, obviously, um, with the likes of Ipswich and, uh, Lester, their results really helped us in terms of just making sure that we got to pull forward slightly. It's still a massive way to go. Obviously, Everton winning means that they're a bit further from safety, ah and a bit more in safety as well. So it's still between us and Ipswich very much, but a good day all round.

Podcast Promotion and Transfer Frustrations

00:22:33

00:23:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Every day global sports podcast network every club every day All right guys, so transfer wise at the time of recording this this is Sunday the 2nd of Feb So we've got just it's literally just over a day till the window closes because obviously the 3rd of Feb at 11 p.m. UK time is when it's gonna close excuse me and Well, so far it's only Agbadoo. You guys know that. I know that. We've been, they've known for ages we've needed more. Obviously, Danso, there's been so much rigmarole about this centre-packed Danso, and in the last few days it's been more of, it's been a rollercoaster this last week of
00:23:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's gonna sign, he's not gonna sign, Juventus wants him, someone else wants him, we want him, it's going back and forth all over the place. Clearly this guy never wanted to come here. The Wolves deal was apparently all done, he was gonna have a medical on Sunday, and it was all gonna be taken care of, everything was agreed with all parties.
00:24:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Tottenham swoop in after this, like what feels like weeks of discussion on this one. And they club get a call to say that he's moving Spurs. And then they go doom. They did the medical same day and he's, he's a Spurs player. I mean.
00:24:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
It feels like, I don't know, I don't know. i I'm almost happy that we don't have him because it feels like we've been messed around once again on this one. And by all means, we all know the wolves are not the best. We've seen it all before with these failings in the transfer market, but this guy particularly just seems like he didn't want to come here in the first place. That was mentioned in some early reports that he rejected an early offer. And then other people have been involved from beginning to end. And the fact that Tottenham swooped in and took him, I mean,
00:24:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah it just felt And yet he kind of agreed everything with us. Clearly we would not an option. And I don't want someone that doesn't want to be here. So let's move on. Let's move on. However disappointing it is to be out of another center back.
00:25:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
with less than a day to go or just about a day to go at this point. The latest reports for what you have, because I don't believe, I'm not going to believe anything given what's going on with Danso and everyone else until we see someone holding a shirt and it's properly announced.
00:25:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But supposedly, at this point, with less than what, twenty just over 24 hours to go, wolves have an interest in Burnley's Josh Brownhill, defenders Thomas Thiessen Christensen from Udinese and NASA ah Digger, I don't know how to pronounce that, from Red Star ahead of tomorrow's deadline. So, I mean, who knows? New names are being thrown out all the time because everyone knows how desperate we are for, as it's been said again and again, definitely a centre back.
00:25:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Pereira wants to know the midfielder, although Belegard has shown that, you know, we're not as bad as we thought we were, but with Lamina still sulking or not playing or whatever's going on there, who knows, who knows what's going to happen there. But, uh, you know, we, we shall see, we shall see at present though, apparently wolves only have space in their squad for homegrown players, unless non-homegrown players are sold or unregistered.
00:26:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I mean, which is just going to add another difficulty this whole thing. I don't know what to say on that one, really. and They've known about this situation for a long time, how it's not been resolved. I don't know how the meaner is still here. I do not know. Just if he doesn't want to be here, then send him away somewhere. Get it done for a pittance. I don't care. He hasn't got that long left on his contracts, but having him around in this state is surely not helping.
00:26:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And then we've got four keepers. Again, we don't need four. If Johnston's staying as a backup, great. Then I'm sorry, King, maybe your time is up. um You know, as much as he's a homegrown player, Johnston is two. So we don't need all those homegrown, we're all at, barring Saar, all the backups.
00:27:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah from the British ah you know like English and Welsh and and so on so we don't they count as homegrown so they're covered and that's not gonna make a difference though in terms of releasing any of them but just in terms of helping the salary and people on the books and all that kind of jazz we don't if Johnston doesn't want to be here get get him on his way as well I don't know guys there's just this This whole transfer debacle is ridiculous, knowing that we have needed a centre-back since last summer. Since last summer. And the loss of mascara to injury means that Agudu coming in means we're just papering over cracks still. As much as I mentioned earlier this episode that I think the defence did pretty well yesterday, we're still lacking in depth. You know, Bueno,
00:27:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
clearly not favored over Doc. So yeah ah what can we say? And you've got Doc there at 33 who's not, you know, done pretty well. All things considered giving it, it's not his natural position. Interesting he said in an interview he did sometimes wonder if he could do that in the latter parts of his career as he struggled more on the wing in terms of pace.
00:28:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he's clearly enjoying it, and now I think it's great to see because we're getting a bit more service out of ah you know a long, ah respected servant of the club. I think Doc is a ah great player. you know He spent most of his career at Wolves on and off. So i'm I'm happy to see it, but clearly he's not necessarily the guy to do it for. I mean, I know we haven't got a full season and left, but you know week in, week out, especially given his age, you want a bit more experience. Dawson,

Dawson potentially is so far down the pecking order now. If Doc's playing over him and Bueno is playing over him, then surely Dawson at this point may want ah lot some games at his age as well, rather than just sit on a bench somewhere. No. However, people, let's end on the high, the fact that we did beat the villa, two nil to wolves on a day that just made me feel so happy. And going into Monday, going into the workplaces, going into, you know, see your family, friends, coworkers, whatever it is, you can hold your head a little bit higher because it was a great weekend. And I feel so much relief to get those three points, but we had a long way to go.
