Introduction & Episode Theme

00:00:00
Speaker
Welcome to ADA Steve Will.
00:00:24
Speaker
All right, so this is a bit of a one-off podcast, or who knows, maybe it's not a one-off. Kind of a little niche podcast, shall we say.
00:00:35
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Let's say let's say let's call it nice. Let's call it nice because we're going to be very going to get down and dirty with a very specific subject. So let's get in the car. Yeah, let's get in the car. We're going to go to this as this place. All right. Let's go to this choice. Let's put on our driver's gloves.
00:01:04
Speaker
Wow, that was scary, right? It was just put on our driver's gloves. You know, my granddad had driver's gloves set in mind. Isn't that so cool? Yeah. Anyway, where are we?

Humorous Anecdotes & Personal Stories

00:01:16
Speaker
Who does? I don't know. I'm just, hang on. I'm still, I'm still thinking about my granddad's driver's gloves. They were like, like a tan colored kind of a thing.
00:01:27
Speaker
with little holes where the knuckles should be. Yeah. Yeah. Well, aeration holes too. Yeah. It's like, yes, you can get the someone decided. Oh, yeah. But someone decided, oh, if the driver's gloves, they need to be little holes with a knuckle should be.
00:01:46
Speaker
What's the point? Where's that? I mean, what's going on there? Anyway, hello listeners. Hello. We're going to be very niche today.

Art Supply Shops & Personal Experiences

00:01:56
Speaker
We're going to talk about, and Martin doesn't know about this, but we're going to talk about artist material shops. Ooh, I like those. Yeah. All right. So is that why we're now outside the art supply? Exactly. And luckily they're open.
00:02:15
Speaker
Oh, right. Well, yeah. So we could step inside. There is nothing sadder than turning up at an arts, if any of your hobbies, if you turn up at the store where you go to for your hobby and it's shut, it's like.
00:02:31
Speaker
yeah i did that once i did that one yeah i did that once because i was on one of those like ADHD spending spree kind of moments right and i decided i was going to buy like a like a really top-end hazel
00:02:47
Speaker
okay like you know the ones that made a beautiful beach kind of word are you going to be like i'm going to be a professional artist i'm going to be i'm doing properly exactly equipment yeah exactly and what i need to inspire myself is to have a really like fucking top end easel so i've got that drove there drove through the palermo traffic got there he was closed oh bastards
00:03:13
Speaker
And what was worse is they had one in the window. Just taunting you, laughing at you, as you're standing there looking at it in the glass with your face pressed up against it. Exactly, exactly.

Favorite Art Store Sections

00:03:27
Speaker
So anyway, it's open so we could go. All right. My question. So let's get, let's get like down. Let's go in, right? We're going. Okay. Maybe let's go a little bell. Ching, ching, cause like those kind of shops have a kind of like shops did a certain, you know, traditional shops had a bell. Yeah.
00:03:47
Speaker
Where's your go-to? What's your go-to? You've got like millions of potentially or thousands. Well, I'm thinking about the art store that I sometimes go to, which is quite close to me, which is huge. I mean, it is huge by UK standards. It would be like going into Sainsbury's or something, right, with like rows and rows and rows and rows of stuff.
00:04:15
Speaker
So there's a lot. So I normally would go straight to, uh, probably where the pen and the inks and the pencils are. Oh yeah. Where all the color, there's an art which has got colored pencils all down one side, which is great. I love a whole rack of colored pencils all laid out in colorful glory.
00:04:40
Speaker
I like a rack as well. I know in a state, so rack means something else potentially. Move along. And then there's kind of an ink post. So that's where I go first. What about you? Where do you head? I head, I gravitate. I'm quite a monochromatic kind of guy.
00:05:11
Speaker
and I gravitate towards the blacks.
00:05:14
Speaker
All right. So anything to do with black is good. Ink. Okay. So all kinds of ink you could possibly imagine. I've literally got them in a drawer right behind me now. I've got a drawer full of different types of black inks. All right. So, so I'm just like hunting down. So here's some, here's some black ink for the, for the, for the camera. There's one. You've got them too. Are you monochromatic?
00:05:45
Speaker
no okay here's the more dr marty black star wow lovely but with the little with the little um the cap on it so you can like add you could like use it like yeah there you go so you can add droplets so you can dose you can more easily dose your your what you need yeah
00:06:12
Speaker
there we go nice and then but I also go for like charcoal I love a bit of charcoal I like that kind of thing but I must admit I'll tip a wink as I get to that section as I'm going towards that section I tip a wink at the palette knives at the palette knives
00:06:32
Speaker
palette knives all right yeah because like oh they're like they're like your curveball all right and you know and literally before i came on to to record our podcast i was using a palette knife that i've just ordered and i received this week all right i'm gonna and you've got come then of which i used for the camera i used one of them
00:06:57
Speaker
But I've ordered five. They go. All right. It's a liquid. It's a liquid.

Palette Knives & Personal Art Stories

00:07:01
Speaker
It's freestyle. It's called. Hold it up. Liquid. I want to see it. I can only see the top top half. What about the handle? OK, they go. Black handle.
00:07:14
Speaker
Oh, okay. All right. Yeah. It's already got the bits of paint that I've just, that I've already started to add to it. I like, I like it when artists materials, they become when they're not new anymore. I prefer it. Yeah. You know, they've got like, like scratches on them or bits of paint. All right. And so what I like about them is that they force me to change the way I
00:07:44
Speaker
make gestures. Okay. And therefore mark making, it makes mark making, it makes it more left field. All right. All right. Because not a brush that I'm used to. She's like, Oh, what if I'm adding, I've just, I'm literally working on a self portrait at the moment. I'm looking at it now. I think I saw you posted up a work in progress on TikTok a while ago. And I finished it just now. I just finished it.
00:08:09
Speaker
All right. I'm really happy with the first time I've ever done a self-portrait in my life. And I do a self-portrait now after my ADHD diagnosis. All right. And is it in any state to hold up to the camera or not? Not now. I don't know. I mean, you know, you did mention it, so
00:08:41
Speaker
Here we go. So he's just taking the headphones off and he's going over to the room and he's taking it down. He's put the headphones back on again. It's literally still wet. Oh, okay. Still wet, guys. It's fresh. Don't, don't, don't smudge it. Oh, is there some color for us for such a, Oh, look, there we go. Oh, that's pretty cool. Oh, I like that. I like that.
00:09:09
Speaker
Yeah, it's like, it's like I was like, I've put like this greens in there. I know. It's like, it's like all kinds of stuff going on. I was expecting black and white. I was expecting white.
00:09:25
Speaker
I thought why not do a self-portrait. You know when you grab your phone and by mistake you press the photo button, well at least I do this, and all of a sudden you get this really shocking view of yourself lying in bed or in your armchair and you've got like
00:09:45
Speaker
you see yourself in the most brutal, the most unselfie version of yourself you could possibly see. All of a sudden, you're looking at yourself. And it's like, so that's what I did. I use one of those photographs and did a sub portrait from that.
00:10:04
Speaker
All right, cool. So if this is an

Exploring Art Store Sections

00:10:11
Speaker
audio podcast, that means that if you are listening to it on the podcast, you can head over to YouTube where you can see the artwork, see what's going on. You could almost smell it. It's literally still wet. I'm quite happy with it, which is unusual for me. I'm really self-critical.
00:10:34
Speaker
Yeah, there's a touch of a very young Lucian Freud in there. Oh my God. Lucian Freud is the only artist I've ever seen. I went to see him in London many moons ago, about 23 years ago. I came out crying. He's the only artist that ever made me cry.
00:11:04
Speaker
Yeah, he's good. He's good. Wowzers. All right. Okay. So let's say, okay, so you've got to the inks. Where else would you go in the artistry? Next, I will swing around and I will go through the oil paints and the acrylics.
00:11:28
Speaker
And I will go through the when you say swing, which is when you say swing, is it like a violent swing? Is it kind of elegant swing, a pirouette? Well, I mean, you know, it is what I call a a a shopper's swing. So so you come out of the aisle and you pause slightly just to make sure that no one's coming around the corner.
00:11:53
Speaker
Okay. Because, you know, if someone's got a shopping cart, they can, you know, they can give you a fair clip if you just go around too quickly. So you take it a little, a little slow, have a look, have a peek down the aisle, know it's safe, on you go.
00:12:10
Speaker
Okay. That's how I do it. Okay. And onto onto onto, um, I do stop at the, at the, at the pads, at the artists sketch pads and the different and different size pads that you've got there. Yeah.
00:12:33
Speaker
And then also is, and then, and then recently at the end of that aisle is usually you get like, um, uh, sketch, uh, artists, notepads. So they're kind of more, they're smaller usually like a, a four or, or smaller and a, a, a, a five. I'm just seeing if I can find one now. Yeah.
00:12:59
Speaker
This is like a little, you know, like, like, like this size thing. Yeah. Yeah. You know, with, so it's, it's, it's just like a sort of an ideas pad. Um, yeah, I do like those. And in the same section, you could also get, if you happen to be in that corner, you could also get the like different grades of watercolor paper. Mm-hmm.
00:13:25
Speaker
like sometimes even cotton based watercolour paper are the coming blocks. Yes. And if you like to peel them off, which is all part of the joy.
00:13:40
Speaker
It is all part of the joy. And then sometimes... Okay, so that's my second stop. What about you after you've done your... I kind of gravitate, even though I've never bought them, I gravitated to anything that's in a wooden box. Anything that's in a wooden box? Yeah, so you get like Karen Dash. Don't let him near the funeral, Parler.
00:14:10
Speaker
No, don't stop me on that, on those. No, they, you know, like you get like Hulk, the whole freaking collection of oil paints that come in a special presentation wooden box. Oh yeah. With all that like opening actions, like, and it's like a cost of fortune.
00:14:31
Speaker
little grass hinges yeah and once i saw um you know those little blocks of watercolors you get they're that little little blocks are like cakes yeah are they i think they're called cakes yeah right well once i discovered this german
00:14:53
Speaker
watercolor cake makers right that came in a wooden box here was like one one and a half thousand pounds the like the epitome the best quality watercolors you could possibly have have just ridiculous money wow

Expensive Art Supplies

00:15:13
Speaker
yeah wow so that would be that would be my like i kind of i've
00:15:20
Speaker
I've never bought them. And by the way, I never did buy that. Even though I could have gone back the day after. Oh, really? That kind of like that moment passed where I thought, yeah, I want to buy Paul. Paul, you really need to buy that really like top end, top end easel. No, I didn't go there at the end.
00:15:46
Speaker
Yeah. Because I've already got two. That's the point. I've already got two. I'm looking at one of them now. It's perfectly all right. Blimey. There we go. Jesus, that's the old ADHD impulse buying at its best.
00:16:09
Speaker
Yeah. So what's your third go to? You've done the blacks and you've gone back. Right. So I will sometimes go controversially to the other side of the store where they have all the kind of craft stuff
00:16:35
Speaker
right it's like weird inks like a metallic he paints just kind of like yeah lots of lots of weird stuff so i like to kind of go over there i never buy anything over there but it's always just fun just to look at what is there like this right
00:16:57
Speaker
kind of crazy crafty stuff, which is a bookshop going to a new section. It's like going to the, you know, psychology section of the bookshop that you've never been to before.
00:17:12
Speaker
right like what the hell am i doing here i won't buy anything but i'll i'll stare at all the things for it for it for a bit yeah i've done that i know what you mean because i've sometimes you get like there's a section where there's only like um special gels that change your acrylics or your oil paints to make them more matte or to make them more glossy or okay you know you can experiment
00:17:41
Speaker
I've got something here actually. All right. Here you go. This is like hold it up to the camera. It's like a special thing. Gel. It's like opaque matte gel. So it makes all your acrylics more matte based. Nice. That's a draw. You know, that's like, oh, I've never used it. It's still full. I've not used it yet. I bought it like two years ago.
00:18:11
Speaker
in that, in that whole like, I'm looking at things that I have in my drawer, I like pens. Oh yeah. Here we,
00:18:22
Speaker
I have, well actually, you know what? One thing that I have been buying is like, is like ink nib holders. I've got a whole range of like. Oh, I've got those. Nip holders and with the, with the, with the little, you know, with the little, you know, ink nibs. I've got some brass ones, I've got some steel ones. And I've got a bunch of ink.
00:18:54
Speaker
And I, but I've yet to actually kind of, you know, get the ink onto the pen and then the pen onto the paper. Like that part of the whole process has been lacking. It's just been me buying, buying, it's just been me buying pen nibs.
00:19:16
Speaker
right okay i've just bought i've just bought a very niche but apparently it's like really really good and i did research on it it's a very special type of german craft knife oh look at that there look at that sharpness look at that boy that boy yeah i like i like the holder
00:19:39
Speaker
yeah it unscrews look at that you cannot screw it look at that oh okay oh wow yeah i'm just hunting for mine now which is oh i have a a holder which which which i can screw but doesn't have any knife in it
00:20:07
Speaker
here's here's my shitty one okay okay shitty mix the other thing you get on in artists shop so like new kids on the block you get like um there's a company called liquid x that do the the most amazing spray paint
00:20:28
Speaker
And you get like new sections is like, oh, new kids on the block, you know, new pretenders, you know, and, uh, like really amazing colors. Um, which I'd really like to experiment with. That would be really cool. I love, I love, um, you know, so when I was at school with, with, with my friends, we used to do a lot of pen and ink drawing. So we used to have, used to have a lot of ink. So I have like this special little love of like.
00:20:58
Speaker
of bottles of ink. I've got this. Oh, look at that. Oh, look at that. That's beautiful. I know it's this blue. It's this blue. It's called this was called 50, 50, 50, 54th Massachusetts from from Noodles Inc. And it's this gorgeous blue color. OK, that's kind of kind of cool.
00:21:26
Speaker
got Bombay. I've got I've got so so many like so all of these inks as well. No. Lovely colors. Up to PH Martins. Is it just to have to be your name? It has to be Martin. No, it was just like me and Steve. Steve used to buy all the look buy all these things.
00:21:55
Speaker
I remember you. It was you and Steve. Hello, Steve. If you're listening, watching you, you guys introduced me to Dr. Martin Zinks. The joy that is Dr. Martin's. The joy. Look, I have my my my posh scalpel. Oh, there you go. There you go. Let's compare. I don't think that it's as posh as yours. Yours looks posher.
00:22:23
Speaker
This is, I mean, this one unscrews, sure. Here we go. I think they're pretty much the same. I can unscrew this. Pretty much the same thing. Okay. Yeah. I'm not going to think, I'm not going to think badly of you. I'm not going to get like, Oh, Martin's, you know, what is life isn't as good as mine. No, this one's pretty much this one. Yeah. This wasn't expensive actually.
00:22:51
Speaker
two men of a certain age showing off their scalpels. Exactly. Well, yeah, it came to mind. Is there a point to this podcast, this episode? Does there need to be? No, that's why it's only going to be half an hour long.
00:23:07
Speaker
Yeah. And and it'll be it'll be released as a weird bonus episode. Exactly. I could already I could almost hear the people drifting off. You know, she's a bit of a niche episode that's like moving on. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. All right. So nice. Where's your last stop in the in the in the art store?
00:23:35
Speaker
just just just a last time. Just just that I okay, I my last stop is kind of going to make it the first the first thing came to my mind. There you go. First thing came to my mind was the thing holding your hand, the palette.
00:23:56
Speaker
Oh, oh, yeah. Well, that's a hole for the thumb. Yes. At that palette. Yeah. Yeah. I've always used like plates and stuff. I've never actually I've never actually, you know, gone down the road of old. Let's go for like a proper artist palette. Didn't you have one at art college? Did I?
00:24:20
Speaker
I think I did. I think I borrowed my mum's. Did you? I don't think I ever did. I don't know. How about you? What was your last theme before you got up to the till? They kind of, you know, like run up your bill.
00:24:40
Speaker
Right. I will, I will go back through all of this, all of the hours yet again. So I'll go back down the paper. I'll go back down all the paint. I'll go back down all the pencils and the pens and the, and the inks. And I will, and I will just, and yeah, now we'll just kind of look at them all again. Okay. Just to look at them.
00:25:05
Speaker
Yeah. Oh, look at that ruler. Look at that lovely ruler. Ooh, that's a nice ruler. Maybe, maybe that's the point because often these places they have stuff that goes on, you know, that like is stacked is like goes up and stuff that people haven't bought for a while. And all the people, the stuff that I think it's very common in all artists shops, you look upwards, you know, like you look up and you see the kind of more niche stuff.
00:25:35
Speaker
All right. You know, like, like some, and we like some niche.

Episode Conclusion & Regular Schedule

00:25:40
Speaker
Yeah. Like strange kind of like, um, strange size canvases or all kinds of stuff.
00:25:50
Speaker
Wow. All right. Yeah. Okay. All right. I think before we lose any more followers. Exactly. So this has been like a little mini short episode.
00:26:07
Speaker
A very Nishi one. Nishi? Oh, as you said, very nuggety. Very nuggety. But yeah, our podcasts are out every Tuesday on where your TikTok is and YouTubes. And in the meantime, be fucking kind to yourself.
00:26:26
Speaker
And I beseech you, fellow ADSTs, know thyself, sons of the house, come hither and get the flesh. And we're out. And we're out. There, says the mayor. That's that.
