Welcome to Prime Space, a Prime Coaching Academy podcast with your host, Elias Scultori.
00:00:14
Speaker
Hello everyone, thank you again for listening to another episode of Prime Space.
00:00:21
Speaker
Today we are going to be tackling a huge topic.
00:00:28
Speaker
Are you ready?

Defining Coaching: A Partnership for Potential

00:00:30
Speaker
The question I have right now for us is, what is coaching?
00:00:36
Speaker
we are this is episode four of our podcast and we talked a little bit about just introducing our podcast introducing Amy here talking a little bit of the history and the origins of coaching and I thought that it would be important since this podcast is all about coaching well let's talk about what is this that we are talking about what is coaching
00:01:03
Speaker
However, I'm a little hesitant to address this topic as I start recording it because it's huge.
00:01:12
Speaker
And certainly, we can't cover this in 10 minutes.
00:01:20
Speaker
It's a huge topic.

Coaching: Mindset and Transformation

00:01:22
Speaker
But why don't we start here with the official definition from the International Coaching Federation?
00:01:30
Speaker
And this is what the definition says.
00:01:32
Speaker
Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
00:01:47
Speaker
Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
00:01:55
Speaker
This is humongous.
00:01:59
Speaker
And as you can see in this definition alone, wow, there are so many ways that we can put this definition into practice.
00:02:14
Speaker
What does it mean to be a partner?
00:02:17
Speaker
What does it mean to be thought-provoking, creative, maximizing, inspires?
00:02:23
Speaker
There are so many crucial, specific words here.
00:02:30
Speaker
And it's wonderful because it gives us this huge spectrum and a spectrum full of opportunities for us to operate in.
00:02:38
Speaker
It's exciting

Transformative Coaching and Personal Values

00:02:39
Speaker
to see this.
00:02:39
Speaker
But one thing that I like to start with is that
00:02:46
Speaker
I like to say that coaching is not just a skill set.
00:02:50
Speaker
Coaching is a mindset.
00:02:53
Speaker
And why do I say this?
00:02:54
Speaker
Because coaching is human.
00:02:58
Speaker
We are working with another human being.
00:03:00
Speaker
And I like to say coaching is a human-to-human experience.
00:03:05
Speaker
At Prime Coaching Academy, we start our coach training with these tenets of coaching.
00:03:12
Speaker
And these are short phrases that Amy and I have created.
00:03:17
Speaker
that really for us encapsulates this practice, this mindset of coaching.
00:03:24
Speaker
And one of them is this.
00:03:25
Speaker
Coaching is a human-to-human experience.
00:03:28
Speaker
So if we are there to support this human being, it's imperative for us to come with our humanity too.
00:03:37
Speaker
We meet this other individual.
00:03:42
Speaker
Coaching is transformative.
00:03:45
Speaker
It's another tenet that we have.
00:03:48
Speaker
And why is it transformative?
00:03:50
Speaker
What is the proposition behind that?
00:03:52
Speaker
You know, it's not simply that we are in a coaching process to find another, what is the next step?
00:04:00
Speaker
What am I going to do here?
00:04:02
Speaker
Yes, we say that in coaching, if we don't have an action, it's not really coaching.
00:04:09
Speaker
But we want that action to be an action that is solid,
00:04:17
Speaker
in that particular person's values, in who that individual is.
00:04:23
Speaker
It's not an action simply because of best practices, not an action because someone told them to do this and that.
00:04:31
Speaker
It's an action because they truly want to do

Historical Roots of Coaching

00:04:35
Speaker
this.
00:04:35
Speaker
It's an action because it is something that is connected to who they want to become, to how this person wants to live in this world.
00:04:47
Speaker
So there is a need in the coaching process for us to go deeper, to find out who do you want to be?
00:04:58
Speaker
What is important to you?
00:05:00
Speaker
What are your values?
00:05:01
Speaker
What do you wish for yourself?
00:05:05
Speaker
And that's why it's so transformative, so that the person, when they decide to move forward, they decide to move forward knowing that
00:05:17
Speaker
And that action is solid, based on something that is truly who they are.
00:05:26
Speaker
Not an action for an action's sake, but an action based on who they truly are.
00:05:32
Speaker
And this applies, as you can see, in any category, any situation, professionally, personally, any particular industry, any particular situation.

Integrating Professional and Personal Identities

00:05:43
Speaker
It's truly a process to work with the individual for them to have more clarity on how they want to proceed and move forward.
00:05:55
Speaker
And coaching is so, this is one thing that I always say, that coaching became this organized profession 30, 40 years ago, not by random.
00:06:09
Speaker
We can trace coaching back all the way back, some people say all the way back to Socrates, right?
00:06:15
Speaker
And the Socratic method, this idea of investigating, asking a question.
00:06:20
Speaker
But to become an organized profession, it only happened in the past few decades.
00:06:28
Speaker
Why?
00:06:29
Speaker
I don't think it was random.
00:06:30
Speaker
And the way my perception, the way I see this, is that since the Industrial Revolution, we have been asking ourselves and our employees to keep your personal lives in the parking lot.
00:06:46
Speaker
Come in here and be professionals.
00:06:51
Speaker
And what happened there?
00:06:53
Speaker
When we do that...
00:06:55
Speaker
we are actually asking that particular individual to split themselves in half, smother part of who they are.
00:07:06
Speaker
There is even an Apple TV show I like to watch called Severance, where the individual goes through this process
00:07:19
Speaker
medical procedure that they own when they are at work they only they don't remember their personal lives and then they go through this elevator and then they go into their personal lives they they don't remember any anything that happened at work
00:07:34
Speaker
And it's science fiction.
00:07:37
Speaker
It's a TV show.
00:07:40
Speaker
But this is, you know, we may laugh about it and think that this is extreme, but this is exactly what we've been asking human beings to do for the longest time.
00:07:51
Speaker
And what happened?
00:07:53
Speaker
Gallup releases now, I think for the past 10 years, Gallup has released this report called the State of the Global Workplace.
00:08:03
Speaker
And consistently in all of these reports, they have come up with the data, right?
00:08:13
Speaker
This is data.
00:08:14
Speaker
More than, get this, more than three quarters of
00:08:20
Speaker
More than 75%, more than three quarters of the work, the workforce go to work every day, disengaged from their work.
00:08:33
Speaker
This is heartbreaking.
00:08:36
Speaker
More than three quarters of the workforce worldwide, this is everywhere in the world, go to work every day, spend most of their productive lives disengaged from what they are doing.
00:08:52
Speaker
We have become automatons.
00:08:56
Speaker
And this is unsustainable.
00:08:58
Speaker
This is not

Standardizing the Coaching Profession

00:09:00
Speaker
sustainable.
00:09:00
Speaker
Something needed to happen.
00:09:02
Speaker
And that is, I believe, where coaching came to be.
00:09:07
Speaker
Okay, so let's integrate.
00:09:09
Speaker
Let's look at the whole human being.
00:09:11
Speaker
What do you truly want to do?
00:09:13
Speaker
How can you contribute to this process?
00:09:17
Speaker
How can I as a manager, as a leader, as a CEO, ask a question, invite people in instead of simply ask them to perform a task and become a little robot?
00:09:31
Speaker
So this is what is at the core of coaching.
00:09:36
Speaker
It's this opportunity for the coach and the clients to come together
00:09:43
Speaker
and spend this period of time into like, who are you?
00:09:47
Speaker
Who do you want to be?
00:09:48
Speaker
What do you want to do next?
00:09:50
Speaker
You are in this particular situation.
00:09:52
Speaker
What is the crux of the matter here?
00:09:54
Speaker
And how do you want to operate based on understanding this a little deeper?
00:10:00
Speaker
Let's go and figure out how you want to continue with your life.
00:10:05
Speaker
What do you want to decide?
00:10:06
Speaker
That is at the core of coaching, partnering with a client,
00:10:10
Speaker
in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
00:10:20
Speaker
That's at the core of coaching.
00:10:23
Speaker
Of course, because this is such a huge topic,
00:10:28
Speaker
So there is the danger that, okay, I'm going to come and do this process in one way and another coach another way and another coach another way.
00:10:36
Speaker
And so then comes the ICF and with this beautiful job that the ICF has done in the past decades, it's like we need to standardize this somehow.
00:10:48
Speaker
So let's come together and see what are the basics?
00:10:54
Speaker
What are the basic points here that a coach demonstrates when a coach is in this thought-provoking creative process with their clients?
00:11:04
Speaker
And that's where the ICF came and created the ICF core competencies.
00:11:09
Speaker
And then later on to standardize certification, the ICF created the different levels of certification.

Artistry in Coaching

00:11:15
Speaker
And then the PCC markers, the ACC bars, and the MCC bars.
00:11:18
Speaker
And then we went nuts with all of these codes and all of these lists.
00:11:26
Speaker
And sometimes I get concerned because we got so enamored
00:11:33
Speaker
by these lists that then we believe, we began to believe that these lists are coaching.
00:11:43
Speaker
But this list is just a recipe.
00:11:46
Speaker
The list is not the cake.
00:11:50
Speaker
The list is just a recipe.
00:11:53
Speaker
And one can be 100% versed in the recipe, memorize the recipe, know exactly how much flour and milk and butter...
00:12:05
Speaker
We are going to put in order to create the cake, but, you know, a lot of people know how to look at the recipe, but have the recipe in front of them and still don't know how to bake a cake.
00:12:17
Speaker
Or sometimes they are so fixed on the one point of the recipe and this has to be specific about this and then the cake is stale.
00:12:29
Speaker
So what we need to do is not to be enamored by the recipe.
00:12:32
Speaker
The recipe is crucial, foundational, but it's really to understand what is behind this recipe.
00:12:39
Speaker
Why do I need to mix flour and milk?
00:12:42
Speaker
And why do I need to put this amount of butter?
00:12:44
Speaker
Why not more?
00:12:46
Speaker
So that we can create our own cake.
00:12:49
Speaker
So that we can even at some point be able to put the recipe to the side and because I understand the bottom line, the concepts, then I can really build my cake.
00:13:04
Speaker
Then I can really play.
00:13:06
Speaker
Or maybe in this one, I'm going to put a little bit more orange over here.
00:13:09
Speaker
And then I will create an orange cake.
00:13:13
Speaker
Right?
00:13:14
Speaker
That is the artistry of coaching.
00:13:16
Speaker
That is at the core.
00:13:18
Speaker
So yes, there is a need for us to go and study the recipe.
00:13:24
Speaker
But we need to be very clear that the recipe is not the cake.

Listener Engagement and Conclusion

00:13:31
Speaker
The cake is really the moment when we are able to be in front of this human being and really be able to create this thought-provoking process and connect human to human in this transformative process that we have with them.
00:13:50
Speaker
Okay?
00:13:51
Speaker
So those are just the initial thoughts that I have for this huge question, what is coaching?
00:14:00
Speaker
And I would love to hear your thoughts and what you think about this.
00:14:03
