Introduction and Team Update

00:00:08
officialgspn
Hey, welcome in walls friends. It is Chris here with you today. And we are back following the weekend game against Manchester city. I'm on my own today. The boys aren't with me because, uh, I told you last week and told everyone I was struggling with the variation of cold or should I say man fluids, the worst disease known to all of us. And, uh, you know,
00:00:32
officialgspn
clearly it's now spreading through the wolves daily camp like wildfire and the entire team is now struck down and struck down in their prime. Or maybe they are just wallowing in despair from another defeat. Either way we'll have a little summary from me today to talk through the weekend's results and then hopefully they'll be back with me soon to continue with their thoughts where we can all run to each other in the coming days.

Wolves vs. Manchester City Match Recap

00:01:00
officialgspn
for looking forward to another week so well where do we go from here guys as we know by now as we all know by now because it was live you know everywhere and you don't live under a rock you're tuning in because you know the results wolves last hosting Manchester City Manchester City 2, Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 and there's so many things we could talk about Most of all, obviously, well, we're going to get on. We're going to get on to obviously the big who are the big talking point, the controversy at the end of the game. But first and foremost, let's focus on the fact that there was a change in tactics. We did go after much debate amongst fans for a long time. And Gary and Elle finally coming out saying the changes needs to be made, made it. That's a new word we just made that so we went with the the back five.
00:01:54
officialgspn
And it allows so much more defensive cover that seems to just suit walls and has it done since we returned to the Premier League over recent years. And we were obviously much more solid defensively without doubt. I said in a pre-match that I thought you know against Manchester City we would still see the three holding midfielders.
00:02:15
officialgspn
Because against anyone else I would have liked to have seen two, and then someone, you know, added up front for a bit more creativity, but given who we were hosting, I think it's more than fair that that we stuck with the same midfield to to give that extra cover across, across the defense but Oh my word. I mean the game started so brightly. We looked fairly solid ah but and within the first seven minutes Strandlarson scoring with a beautiful run and cross from Somato, which by the way had ah was built up to with a beautiful ball out from Santibueno. I know Will is still you know living on that high despite everything else.
00:02:54
officialgspn
But so there was hope, there was joy, you know and and it just felt like oh this could be it. this is This could be what we're waiting for. We've got the five at the back. We've scored a goal against Manchester City again. we we know we've We've shocked everyone. It's looking positive. And despite the fact we knew, obviously, they would come on strong. They will. they you know no matter how you shape up, they're gonna have their <unk> going to have their stints, they're gonna take control for periods, but we still looked threatening on the break a few times and had some chances. And, ah I mean, once again, a

Key Moments and Controversies

00:03:28
officialgspn
couple of things have happened. One is the equalizing goal just before halftime. I mean, it's, yes, it's a beautiful strike from Gov, I can never pronounce his name, Govardiol.
00:03:42
officialgspn
uh but not closed down quick enough in my opinion on the edge of the box i mean so much beautiful defensive work for the most part and yeah it's a long way out he's got a lot to do but you know given how solid we are in the box that they're gonna start shooting from distance and uh it's a beautiful strike but it just felt like he wasn't quite closed down quick enough just needed someone just to just to pressure him a little bit more and maybe that that could have been prevented. I mean, ah I'm i clutching at straws, I know, but it was just my instinct in that moment. And when I've watched it since, it's it's still the thing that's breathing around my head. However, one, one at a half time, I'll take it against Manchester City. And, you know, despite the fact, so well, as we looked, we still had a couple of moments in the second half where we could have taken more than the point.
00:04:34
officialgspn
And ah I mean, the point that we we didn't end up getting, but we still looked fairly solid despite the fact there was a lot of pressure. And it did feel like that we started the further it went on. Obviously the more we tried to settle for the draw, the deeper we got and the more pressure we pulled on did seem to lose some of that creativity, some of that, you know, once we got that first goal, there weren't as many ah breaks forward like that.
00:05:01
officialgspn
maybe you know that's fair that at this point in time they're so desperate just to get a point and not lose you know the the pressure the scoreboard pressure is is a thing you know after this many defeats after this long without a win it's going to be natural especially against this against these opponents that there's going to be you know a factor of just the pressure building and everyone holding on but to get as close as we did as close as we did to taking a point from Manchester City and potentially kick-starting you know things are getting things rolling in the season and going into the next game with a bit more momentum and feeling like there's maybe a shift because it felt like that was on the cards
00:05:49
officialgspn
to be gut punched by such a late winner and then the controversy around it is just astounding. Now in the build-up to ah John Stone's headed goal obviously there's also a discussion about the fact that just before Guedes was on the on the break heading towards their penalty area with a goal and he gets ah a shove in the back.
00:06:15
officialgspn
ah yeah and that that could have been called back for a free kick and then that whole flurry of corners would never have happened because that was that was so close to the end of the game that could have potentially closed down the game but nothing is called you know it's debate I've watched it a few times it's on the one hand I can see why the ref has not given it because after the hands on the back he does wrap his foot around and stop the ball dead because the ball literally stops dead ah to to show that he's he's managed to get his foot around but he only gets the foot around because of the way he's put his hands on him. So ah it's it's it's upsetting because again it just feels like it's one rule.
00:06:57
officialgspn
one rule for one side and not for the other and then to to concede i mean to to go up against that much pressure and to consider to go up against 18 corners 18 corners for Manchester City and to concede on the final one in the final moments of the game. I mean, John Stone's has got his head on it. Why, you know, you can you can you can argue that maybe he shouldn't have got
00:07:29
officialgspn
been allowed to get that header but i mean we faced 18 corners and that's the only one this is the only one that had an impact and and then it's surrounded with the extra controversy which is just it's just left me the entire event the entire process has just left me reeling everyone i mean I feel, we we felt before the weekend, you know, an element of fatigue. I think we all spoke about it, the series of results, the mood, everything going on. There's a sense of exhaustion, of just needing something to happen, a shift, something. and and And then, you know, to feel like that might have been on the cards, the turning, and then and then just this, they give the goal.
00:08:26
officialgspn
for a moment, then it's given offside and then they are stepping in and say it looks like it should be potentially given and they call the ref to the screen. Once the ref goes to the screen, you know, you know,
00:08:47
officialgspn
it's going to be over to it's going to be overturned, like given back again

VAR and Refereeing Critique

00:08:52
officialgspn
as a goal. You just know it. I think only once or twice have I ever seen any kind of decision withstood from VAR as in the ref on the pitch has been strong enough to say, no, I don't know. I'm going to keep my call. And one of those, I remember vividly was in the women's world cup and it was a female ref who made a brilliant call. I wish I could remember the game, but in the premier league, I don't think I've ever seen it. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. I'm sure, but you just know, you just know when they go to the screen. That's it. And, and just, I mean, it felt like
00:09:27
officialgspn
the The cheer when it was given offside, because Molyneux erupted feeling like this was our moment to to rub it in the face of man-city and get the point. But then you just feel like it's another stab in the back, not even in the back. It's a it's a kick in the teeth.
00:09:47
officialgspn
from VAR again from the refereeing committee again and I can understand Gary O'Neill's post-match conference I can understand his comments because at this point he's you know he he knows his job is on the line he knows he's under intense pressure he also knows how many decisions we all do how many decisions went against us last season not to mention seasons before but last season under his you know his reign went against us and now this when he's most under pressure to to have this weird situation with a player in an offside position and then the debate about whether it's impacting play or not when we had the same situation with the Max Kilman goal against West Ham last season.
00:10:37
officialgspn
It's, as always, it's the consistency that is the problem. Arguably, both goals should stand. are you i mean you can you can You can look at it either way, but let's say both goals stand. Yes, it doesn't help us for this weekend, but at least it's consistent. But it's the inconsistency that is most frustrating.
00:11:00
officialgspn
And the fact that in his post-match statement, Gary Neal points out when he's being asked about it that, you know, they made, and they sent forward evidence last year over the West Ham goal about the fact that line of sight was not blocked because it whereas Chawera didn't move fully out of the way, he's short, the goalie could see, the goalie admitted he could see, and clearly the ball could be seen. But they said, the referee's committee said that it was the fact that he was still, he was in close proximity to the goalie last season that it was still not given because he was in close proximity. And then this season they've gone ahead and said that no, it's because there is nothing to do with that. It's because of the fact that the line of sight is clear.
00:11:46
officialgspn
but he's in close proximity. He can't be any closer before he moves. And they've ignored the fact that just as the ball is coming, he steps back and shoves into Jose Sarr. Now, you can debate the fact that, well, i don't I don't think it's debatable that, you know, if you've got a player who's shoved up against you and you're having to shove him away from you as the ball is coming in,
00:12:11
officialgspn
and you've got, you have to have half an eye on that person who is up against you, you can't not, he's in your vision, and he's, you know, you've had to shove him away, you can't have a set stance, he can't, he can't come for the cross, yes he can't be offside from the initial corner, but he's still, he's impacted him in such a way that then he's not immediately crouched, he's not immediately to the side,
00:12:33
officialgspn
he's there in his vision and impacting his decision making and his choices and his awareness because he has to have he has to have an eye on him and he has to have an awareness of him and he has to be able to to make sure he's not going to interfere with the ball coming in so there's even if he can see the ball there's arguably still impact there he is close enough to be impacting his play But regardless of what I think about whether or not he's impacted him on the cross, it's the consistency that once again is is not present and is basically ruining the game for all of us and denying us of of a valid point. should We should have at least got a point. We should have at least got a draw and it just feels, once again,
00:13:23
officialgspn
Like it's all rigged for the big boys. You know, Manchester City have just had all of these allegations of the how much financial fair play wiped away clean. And now here they are once again and everyone gives them what they want to get the win. As the players all crowd around the referee while he's watching the screen, they're not made to go away. They're allowed to crowd around him because that's what Manchester City and the like are allowed to do. They're all there swarming around him as the ref is at the screen.
00:13:51
officialgspn
Now, if that was wolves crowning a radium at the screen, they'd be told to go away and probably just book Lamina randomly, because that's what they do. Doesn't make any sense. It's just not, it's not fair, it's not consistent, and it's not on. Now, to add salt into the wounds of all of this, um the I urge you, by the way, to go and watch the Gary Nill press conference from after the game. If you haven't seen it,
00:14:17
officialgspn
because he very calmly and concisely puts forward his clear frustrations on it and also the fact that, you know, as I mentioned, he knows he's under pressure, he knows his job is at risk and puts forward the the the debate around refereeing decisions and the potential subconscious uh, you know, decision-making or subconscious impact on play that big games, big teams have on referees and the unconscious bias, as he called it towards bigger clubs. Now we don't get managers say this to Fairloud very much. And when they do, they normally get fined. So he was very careful to try and be very clear on the fact that he didn't think there was any conscious bias.
00:15:06
officialgspn
And that it was just, you know, is there a gray area in in unconscious bias? Because when wolves or anyone are playing these big teams, they think differently and do referees think differently.

Referee Bias Discussion

00:15:23
officialgspn
Now, I've refereed in other sports, personally, and I'd like to think it's not the case, but I totally get where he's coming from in this day and age of Premier League football, where the players are seemingly allowed to swarm around referees and say whatever they want and not get told off. It doesn't make any sense. And where they are just assumed to always be the better side. So,
00:15:47
officialgspn
Yeah, I'm not happy guys. I'm really frustrated. It's just I just don't know I don't know what to think I Mean, I do know what to I know what to think in that. I feel like we've been shafted And I'm sure you do too I know that it just doesn't seem fair the inconsistency And I know that it's not going to be the only time it happens to us this season when we are in, you know, such a predicament, such a position for these kinds of things to have such a massive impact, for that to be the final moment of a game, for that to be the defining moment of a game that denies a team, you know, fighting at the bottom a point and give Manchester City all three.
00:16:40
officialgspn
but the for the VAR to step in and... choose to interfere and make that call when i believe they're not meant to be interfering with much as playing unless it's a clear and obvious thing which seemingly on the debate of whether someone is offside or not and is making an impact on eyeline and all these other things clearly potentially not clear and obvious given that it is inconsistent to last year
00:17:12
officialgspn
So, what are they doing in the first place? Why? Why do they have to step in? The decision was made and, and I don't, and I just, I think we're all, I'm trying to be really, I'm, I'm being calm. I'm being as calm as I can. Cause if I don't be calm, I'm just going to get angry. Like I'm sure you all probably have.
00:17:36
officialgspn
Before I cover anything else, ah because I want to talk a bit more about some news that's updated since since all of this. If you're ready to tell your story, check out the link in the show description to learn more about Zencaster. so based on after the press conference that we spoke about with gary neale after the match which i i really enjoyed watching from a and not not enjoyed i was in like a smile on my face because i'm angry about the whole situation but i appreciated his there's a lot of things that you know people can say he does wrong in press conferences and he you could argue you shouldn't have said a lot of the stuff he does but i understand why he did given his position given his
00:18:43
officialgspn
potential you know uh short-lived lifespan in the role i get it i get it i think you'd be have a very have a very cold heart to not get where he's coming from So it's come out today that Wolves boss Gary O'Neill has been contacted by the Football Association after he after he suggested referees could have a problem with unconscious bias towards bigger clubs. This update, as I'm recording this on Monday night, came out three hours ago. The FA has asked O'Neill for his observations following his post-match comments after Wolves' defeat to Manchester City. And um it says here, as I pointed out, O'Neill will remain calm in his post-match

Gary O’Neill’s Insight on Refereeing Bias

00:19:25
officialgspn
comments.
00:19:25
officialgspn
and reiterated he does not believe there is any knowing bias, but will now have to explain his remarks to the FA which will decide whether to take any further action. Can you believe it? O'Neill said on Sunday, there's no chance people are purposely against wolves, let's be clear, but is there something in the subconscious around the decision making? Without even knowing it, are you more likely to give it to Man City than wolves?
00:19:50
officialgspn
My senses are heightened when we are facing Man City. Are the officials the same? When it's Erling Harland and Man City, is there something in there that not on purpose influences decision making? They guarantee me there isn't, but they are human and Man City scoring a last minute winner is a big thing. A bigger thing than walls scoring a last minute goal against West Ham. If I had to upset someone in the street and there's a big and a little guy in the street, I'm upsetting the little guy. I just if um get i I can't, e whether or not you know you believe it's true, or whether or not it's a thing, and it whether there's ever any way to prove it or not, I don't blame him for saying what he did given the situation. He said it very calmly.
00:20:40
officialgspn
He wasn't angry, he didn't shout, he didn't raise his voice and he went on to make valid points about the goal last season, about the situation this season. But the fact that now the f FA are going to you know ask for his input and potentially decide whether to find him or take any action When once again, then, then the focus is being put on the FA telling off the manager. Not, not them having to explain their decisions and what is going on. It's always a ah flip of events. It's always a change of circumstance. It's taking the onus off the FA and putting it on Gary and Neil.
00:21:24
officialgspn
And once again, it's all the wrong way around. It's all the wrong way around. Now I hope, you know, and and maybe i maybe they have, maybe I've missed it. I hope we get more analysis, even though I don't think it'll be very good um as to... why the FA think or why the VAR panel stepped in and made such a call when they didn't need to and it's particularly on their input on last season versus this one with the West Ham goal because if they're saying it's because
00:21:59
officialgspn
It's about eyesight, line of sight, and not about close proximity. Then why on earth did they say that last season? And why on earth has it changed now? What changed? Why? When? Why was it not said? Why is it not clarified somewhere?
00:22:16
officialgspn
what like It's just one rule. one week and one another without any explanation. And that's the most annoying thing. It's not fair, it's not clear, it's never explained, it's just constantly changed. The goalposts, to use the football analogy, are constantly moving, they're constantly shifting to whatever makes them look better on the day.
00:22:44
officialgspn
And that's the most frustrating thing. And it's a shame because we looked strong.

Positive Takeaways for Wolves

00:22:50
officialgspn
We looked, yes, you know, we defended a lot. Yes, Manchester City had a lot of corners, but until that one moment, you know, they weren't a problem. Dawson in the back five was once again able to basically Mark Harland out of the game, did not have a sniff. He's done it twice at home and it's um it's a beautiful, beautiful thing.
00:23:14
officialgspn
It was a brilliant goal. Strandlarson scoring again. The fact that he's scoring, you know, he's good consecutively now and still popping up and looking lively is great. You know, there's positives. There's so many good things we can take from this. There was definitely a step in the right direction with the change of formation and, and just so many things that could have, we could have left with so much more optimism.
00:23:45
officialgspn
And we can't lose that. We can't lose the fact that there was, it wasn't perfect. I'm not saying it was great and there was still way more that could have been done, but we didn't get thrashed. It was a, you know, we were in that game till the very last second. And when you compare that to Brentford before the break.
00:24:06
officialgspn
I mean that's what we wanted right we wanted to be in the game we wanted to be competitive we want to see an improvement and I think we saw that in one form or another at points throughout that game we saw that shift so let's hope, let's hope that this result, this controversy does not nullify all of that, does not crush the morale out of them because up until that last second decision it had the potential to be a turning point and we have to hope that it will be a turning point
00:24:47
officialgspn
Now, whether that, how that plays out at Brighton, I don't know.

Gary O’Neill’s Future and Team Prospects

00:24:53
officialgspn
And will not getting anything from Manchester City, if we lose at Brighton, is that the end for a Neil? I don't know. But did the City performance maybe get him an extra game or so to prove that it's not the end? Maybe. Maybe it did. Maybe it did.
00:25:16
officialgspn
but I'm curious to know if anyone out there thinks the same and if the rest of the team here at Daily Wolves think the same. So we will find out from you and from them in the coming days, and I'm sure there's going to be more. I want to hear what the FA have to say to Gary Neal and how that's all going to play out and if we have to deal with even more controversy.
00:25:38
officialgspn
so I'm gonna leave it there because I am still getting out of this cold and we are all suffering.
