Introduction to Expat Brad Podcast
00:00:06
Speaker
Hi, it's Salman Qureshi.
00:00:07
Speaker
You're listening to the Expat Brad Podcast.
00:00:10
Speaker
I'll tell you what I think is happening.
00:00:12
Speaker
This is what I imagine it to be right
Humorous Travel Scenario: Hong Kong to Maldives
00:00:14
Speaker
You have been sent for work to... What's a terrible country?
00:00:20
Speaker
Now it gets political already.
00:00:23
Speaker
I shouldn't have started like that.
00:00:24
Speaker
Let's try this again.
00:00:25
Speaker
Here's what I think is happening.
00:00:26
Speaker
Your workplace is sending you to, doesn't matter where, Hong Kong, right, for work, for like an important meeting, but on the way, you get upgraded to first class.
00:00:36
Speaker
Does that ever happen anymore?
00:00:40
Speaker
And your flight gets into turbulence and so they have to land it in Maldives instead and you're stranded there, all expenses paid by the airlines because it's their fault, on an island for the next week and all you can do is...
00:00:56
Speaker
is relax and enjoy yourselves because your laptop as the plane skidded onto the Mali airport just banged against the walls for some reason, just yours.
00:01:05
Speaker
And so you can't even work.
00:01:06
Speaker
And your boss has decided to be extremely sympathetic and concerned for your safety and said, you know what?
00:01:13
Speaker
on the cell phone to you know what you just had you know relax right back there take your time and and and just your job's gonna be here waiting for you right when you get back okay that's what i imagine is happening in your life sounds cool right uh meanwhile um
00:01:34
Speaker
I just got back from
Health Talk: Weather Changes and COVID
00:01:36
Speaker
Man, I've been sick the last two, three weeks off and on again.
00:01:41
Speaker
There's been a couple of changing weather, I suppose.
00:01:44
Speaker
That's what's causing this stuff, right?
00:01:47
Speaker
Or COVID, who knows?
00:01:49
Speaker
But a lot of people have been falling ill.
00:01:52
Speaker
Meanwhile, everybody's pretending it's over.
00:01:54
Speaker
I'm cool with that.
00:01:55
Speaker
No masks anywhere.
00:01:56
Speaker
We've got vaccinated.
00:01:59
Speaker
Everyone's vaccinated.
00:02:00
Speaker
So maybe we got to treat it like a common cold unless you're, you know, it's something that will kill you.
00:02:07
Speaker
in which case I'm not sure what to do.
00:02:11
Speaker
And I was traveling.
Cultural Disconnect in Karachi
00:02:13
Speaker
I went to see my mom and dad, and we decided to meet up in Karachi, which is supposed to be our hometown.
00:02:23
Speaker
Have I spoken to you guys about that?
00:02:24
Speaker
Because that's strange to me, right?
00:02:30
Speaker
apparently we're from Karachi and stuff, but we've never lived there.
00:02:35
Speaker
So it just feels really hard to call it my hometown as well.
00:02:38
Speaker
It's one of those things I'm sure a lot of expat third culture kids have as an issue.
00:02:45
Speaker
Anywho, I did go back and I realized I had packed my podcast mic into the back because I was optimistic about
00:02:56
Speaker
that I'm going to go there and for the six, seven days I have, I'm just going to find time to chill out, get into a room and blast away a couple of episodes maybe, just record a few and put it out there and have a great time in the meantime.
Travel Anecdotes: Mic Trouble and Family Observations
00:03:13
Speaker
So I packed my podcast.
00:03:15
Speaker
Disclaimer, if you've been a regular follower of the podcast, clearly I wasn't able to do that.
00:03:23
Speaker
But the mic did travel with me.
00:03:25
Speaker
And it had a nice trip.
00:03:26
Speaker
It had a great time.
00:03:29
Speaker
It had, you know, it just saw so much more in life.
00:03:33
Speaker
It didn't think, Mike hadn't thought that it would ever go to a third world country.
00:03:39
Speaker
And, ooh, ouch, calling your own country third world.
00:03:42
Speaker
Wow, that's a new low, isn't it?
00:03:45
Speaker
Developing nation.
00:03:48
Speaker
On the flight there to Karachi, my mic's in the bag.
00:03:52
Speaker
I put it in my hand carry choices, decisions that I will later regret.
00:03:58
Speaker
And in the x-ray scan, I get pulled aside.
00:04:01
Speaker
And this woman, immigration officer goes, what's in your bag?
00:04:06
Speaker
And I'm like, at that point, I have no idea, right?
00:04:09
Speaker
You forget what you packed.
00:04:10
Speaker
And for a second, I'm panicking.
00:04:11
Speaker
I'm like, I don't know.
00:04:13
Speaker
What did I put in there that might be a problem?
00:04:15
Speaker
And then she shows me the x-ray scan and this mic.
00:04:18
Speaker
I swear to God, this mic looked like a bomb, a canister or something.
00:04:23
Speaker
Like just very shady.
00:04:25
Speaker
And I looked at it and I couldn't recall that it was the mic...
00:04:29
Speaker
this very mic that I'm talking into.
00:04:31
Speaker
And I thought, oh, what have I done?
00:04:35
Speaker
Did I leave my bag around for a few seconds?
00:04:38
Speaker
What the hell happened?
00:04:40
Speaker
And I'm panicking, I'm looking at it.
00:04:41
Speaker
And it's so funny because you...
00:04:43
Speaker
You know, you just forget at that point.
00:04:46
Speaker
All your thoughts, memories, everything just vanish.
00:04:48
Speaker
I'm looking at it going, these guys are going to bust me.
00:04:52
Speaker
Eventually, I went, no, no, no, it's a podcast mic.
00:04:57
Speaker
It's a podcast mic.
00:04:58
Speaker
And she went, oh, okay.
00:05:00
Speaker
Didn't smile at me at all.
00:05:02
Speaker
Even though I, you know, kind of did my little chuckle to go, you know that chuckle you do to lighten the mood up if you don't have a joke or it's not appropriate enough to do a joke as you kind of go, ha, ha.
00:05:14
Speaker
Something like that.
00:05:15
Speaker
I think it was something like that.
00:05:16
Speaker
Maybe it sounded more panicky.
00:05:19
Speaker
She didn't respond to that, as most immigration officers don't.
00:05:22
Speaker
And I went through.
00:05:25
Speaker
It also bothered me, though, that when I thought about it, right, I was like, she didn't really check it.
00:05:32
Speaker
She didn't check it.
00:05:32
Speaker
She took my word for it.
00:05:34
Speaker
And that's a little bit scary, isn't it?
00:05:36
Speaker
Because I wasn't exactly the most confident, calm person in that moment.
00:05:44
Speaker
I literally went, it's out of...
00:05:50
Speaker
It's a podcast, Mike.
00:05:52
Speaker
And if I was in her place, I'd be like, this guy sounds a little, just a little bit suspicious.
00:05:58
Speaker
Maybe we should open this bag and check it, right?
00:06:03
Speaker
She let me through.
00:06:04
Speaker
So if it was something else.
00:06:07
Speaker
I would have taken it through the plane, right?
00:06:11
Speaker
You'll take water bottles, but not something suspicious like that.
00:06:16
Speaker
Anyway, got through.
00:06:19
Speaker
I've never panicked like that.
00:06:20
Speaker
I swear to God, when I saw that x-ray thing, it was just crazy.
00:06:24
Speaker
But the trip itself was great.
00:06:25
Speaker
Other than that, I got to travel with my sister and my niece, so my sister's daughter.
00:06:30
Speaker
And I realized kids nowadays...
00:06:33
Speaker
We always did it, but we did it as teens.
00:06:35
Speaker
It was like underplaying stuff.
00:06:37
Speaker
She, kids have taken it to a whole different level.
00:06:40
Speaker
Like she'll be having, she's six years old, by the way.
00:06:43
Speaker
She'll be having the greatest time.
00:06:46
Speaker
She's having a ball without her siblings.
00:06:48
Speaker
She's eating McDonald's every day and drinking Coke and everything.
00:06:54
Speaker
you know, play, going to the adventure land over there, the amusement parks, blah, blah, blah, blah.
00:07:00
Speaker
And I, every time I went, Hey, uh, you're having a great time.
00:07:03
Speaker
And she just goes, Hmm, it's okay.
00:07:07
Speaker
And I was just like, Whoa, what does it take to impress kids nowadays?
00:07:10
Speaker
So it's just, is this TikTok videos that have spoiled them or just they've been told not to act excited.
00:07:18
Speaker
I need to deep dive into this.
00:07:19
Speaker
If you've got kids or you are young, uh,
00:07:23
Speaker
I want to know, is this something like being promoted by videos and stuff?
Cultural Food Practices and Weight Gain
00:07:27
Speaker
But one of the biggest learning about traveling there was that we eat a lot.
00:07:39
Speaker
So firstly, I just weighed myself, right?
00:07:42
Speaker
And I'm a little like sad about my life right now because I weigh more than I did at the beginning of the year.
00:07:50
Speaker
And about seven months of this year, I had been great.
00:07:55
Speaker
I had been losing weight.
00:07:57
Speaker
I was halfway to my ideal weight.
00:08:00
Speaker
And now I've gained more weight than I did at the start of the year.
00:08:06
Speaker
And not by like half a kilo, like a couple of kilos.
00:08:11
Speaker
It's just really disappointing.
00:08:14
Speaker
I've had a few bad, a bad month or so, a couple of bad months maybe, but it just killed me to know I'm going to miss my targets or at most be right on square one or something.
00:08:27
Speaker
How do people do it?
00:08:28
Speaker
How do people transform themselves and be so consistent?
00:08:31
Speaker
My life is just so hard to do that, right?
00:08:35
Speaker
And my waistline is again at the place where it started the year.
00:08:38
Speaker
It's just really depressing, dude.
00:08:41
Speaker
And I just realized it's our culture just has too much food.
00:08:47
Speaker
We show love through food.
00:08:49
Speaker
That's the problem.
00:08:52
Speaker
It's a great thing.
00:08:53
Speaker
It's a beautiful thing in some ways.
00:08:56
Speaker
And I think all of humanity kind of does it.
00:08:59
Speaker
Like, you know, food is one of the ways we show love.
00:09:02
Speaker
Maybe it's an evolutionary thing where people at the beginning went, hey, I'm going to go out, fight this dinosaur, kill it, cook it, and present it to you instead of just having it by myself.
00:09:16
Speaker
Like the ultimate act of selflessness was probably that, right?
00:09:21
Speaker
To risk your life, to feed others.
00:09:24
Speaker
And that has stayed with us now.
00:09:27
Speaker
And even though we can just go pop into a restaurant or order online sitting at home and get literally any kind of food you want at your house in 30 to 45 minutes, we still think of it as the best way to show love.
00:09:45
Speaker
I don't know how much or how, you know, it's ingrained in other cultures, how much it might have died down.
00:09:54
Speaker
But in the brown culture, in the Paxan culture, it's still a huge thing.
00:09:59
Speaker
It's like if you don't eat, you have not just insulted.
00:10:03
Speaker
It's on a different level, okay?
00:10:05
Speaker
I know some cultures have like, they feel insulted.
00:10:07
Speaker
This isn't insulted.
00:10:08
Speaker
This is like you have... You have...
00:10:13
Speaker
What's more than feeling insulted?
00:10:15
Speaker
You have like destroyed their sense of self-worth.
00:10:20
Speaker
Like it's gone deeper.
00:10:22
Speaker
And so I had to like eat and take bites everywhere.
00:10:25
Speaker
And not to say I don't enjoy it.
00:10:27
Speaker
It was great food.
00:10:28
Speaker
Also, it was just the thing of like, okay, I'm
00:10:32
Speaker
It's fine when it's your own family, but then I had my parents, family, friends.
00:10:37
Speaker
I had, I don't know, everybody.
00:10:41
Speaker
Everybody, maybe strangers to just feeding me every single day, four or five times a day.
00:10:49
Speaker
And if I had a longer holiday where I was there for a month, I could space it out and go, hey, how about we do next Tuesday?
00:10:56
Speaker
This was like one day after another.
00:10:59
Speaker
And it was, you know, on and on and on.
00:11:01
Speaker
And I don't know what else we can do.
00:11:05
Speaker
The other problem is we show love through it.
00:11:08
Speaker
There's not much else going on.
00:11:10
Speaker
And how do you show love?
00:11:12
Speaker
Some people buy you gifts, right?
00:11:14
Speaker
Like they got us clothes locally and stuff.
00:11:16
Speaker
But the food thing is just very, very,
00:11:19
Speaker
way too important like way too important and i'm trying to come up with what would be a good thing to replace it right nfts i don't know at current nft prices maybe that's a good thing right like uh now that it's done and dusted but then who would want it they'd be like oh we're really sorry about getting you these useless things oh
00:11:42
Speaker
I don't know, man.
00:11:43
Speaker
I can't think of what else we do.
00:11:45
Speaker
Or we just go, hey, you know what I really want is your time and company and just having a laugh.
00:11:53
Speaker
And we can do it sitting at your home over a cup of tea max, right?
00:11:58
Speaker
Maybe we need to just create this rule.
00:12:03
Speaker
If I start going more back home, I'm just going to tell people, listen.
00:12:09
Speaker
These are new contracts I'm sending out to the family.
00:12:12
Speaker
We're redoing this stuff.
00:12:14
Speaker
You're only allowed to serve me liquid refreshments.
00:12:18
Speaker
They're probably, I don't know.
00:12:20
Speaker
Do you know Nihari or Curry of any kind?
00:12:24
Speaker
They probably just put it in a glass and go, hey, you said liquid.
00:12:28
Speaker
Just find a new way to feed me or just blend the parathas into a glass and go, hey, here you go, drink this.
00:12:36
Speaker
So I think that's what we got to do.
00:12:41
Speaker
We just got to go.
00:12:43
Speaker
I'm only going to come over if that's the case.
00:12:45
Speaker
And we just chill out because I really do want to spend time with everybody and have a laugh about old times and new stories and blah, blah, blah.
00:12:53
Speaker
The other problem is we're not making memories, right?
00:12:55
Speaker
What are we going to talk about next time I meet?
00:12:56
Speaker
Hey, you remember the chicken tikka we had?
00:13:01
Speaker
The biryani we had?
00:13:02
Speaker
I want to do more stuff with people, experiences and stuff.
00:13:06
Speaker
And we got to move.
00:13:07
Speaker
If you're still based in these countries now,
00:13:10
Speaker
Where you feel like if you know that this is a thing in your culture, then I beg you to start changing that.
00:13:18
Speaker
Start taking your family out somewhere other than food.
00:13:21
Speaker
I'd rather get robbed together.
00:13:24
Speaker
Oh, that's a whole...
Safety Concerns: Karachi vs. Dubai
00:13:26
Speaker
You go to a place like Karachi, and I've heard this story about South Africa, and I guess any major city, the chances of being mugged go up and up and up.
00:13:35
Speaker
And that fear of being potentially mugged is such a downer on your brain, right?
00:13:44
Speaker
That's why people are anxious and angry in these countries.
00:13:47
Speaker
I don't think, I think if you take away the mugging problem,
00:13:52
Speaker
And traffic issues.
00:13:54
Speaker
I think all these countries will shoot up so much on the happiness index because that these two things to me are the most like they're the things that destroy you on a daily basis.
00:14:06
Speaker
Like just knowing that I'm going out with my phone and wallet and this might be the last time I ever see them.
00:14:12
Speaker
Just that pressure, man.
00:14:15
Speaker
I usually carry like an older phone on me when I travel and I couldn't find it when I was leaving and I had to take my iPhone.
00:14:25
Speaker
And every day out with the iPhone felt like, oh, why am I doing this to you and to myself?
00:14:30
Speaker
And do I have backup?
00:14:31
Speaker
Is iCloud updated?
00:14:34
Speaker
This is no way to live.
00:14:36
Speaker
Meanwhile, in Dubai, people forget money on the streets and somehow it gets back to you.
00:14:43
Speaker
This place is also insane on a different level.
00:14:46
Speaker
And you better to be here.
00:14:50
Speaker
That's the other thing about Pakistan, I guess, and these places.
00:14:53
Speaker
So the whole thing, the other thing that got me with these places is how nice is it to travel to places which are weaker in currency for you?
00:15:07
Speaker
I got to admit, man, if I could earn Dubai money and move to these countries, I could live like a king, right?
00:15:15
Speaker
Just to give you an idea, like the distance that I would travel that would cost me $100.
00:15:25
Speaker
let's say $30 in Dubai from one place to another.
00:15:29
Speaker
So it's about 100, 120 therms.
00:15:30
Speaker
Costs me the equivalent of $2.
00:15:40
Speaker
I don't think I paid for Kareem Uber for a lot of distances any more than $5.
00:15:47
Speaker
And that stuff was crazy.
00:15:49
Speaker
And that's just one example.
00:15:50
Speaker
Even restaurants or fast food chains like McDonald's and stuff were slightly cheaper over there.
00:15:57
Speaker
So every time I converted and like I took my niece to the mall play areas, right?
00:16:04
Speaker
And we literally tried every...
00:16:07
Speaker
video game there we tried bumper cars we did a lot of stuff all right and it cost me one fourth of what it would have cost me here and it was still the quality was on par with the stuff that i do here okay so it wasn't even like okay so these look like shady machines that will break when we play them
00:16:32
Speaker
I got a better gift there.
00:16:33
Speaker
You know, you collect those tickets after these games and it became like a huge bunch.
00:16:39
Speaker
And the stuff we got there, I thought about what the kids would have got here and it was much better over there too.
00:16:45
Speaker
So it was just crazy that you just get more value for money as an outsider.
00:16:53
Speaker
And I feel bad for the people living there with the rising costs.
00:16:57
Speaker
And it goes crazy because I can't even imagine what that would do to me to pay 50 bucks for something.
00:17:04
Speaker
And then the very next day, that thing has gone up to 80.
00:17:07
Speaker
You know, that's the kind of price jumps that happen there.
00:17:10
Speaker
And you're like, oh, wow, I would not be able to budget with this stuff.
00:17:13
Speaker
And as it is, I'm bad with it.
00:17:15
Speaker
So I'd be on the streets pretty soon, I imagine, as there are loads of people.
00:17:20
Speaker
And that, so I do feel for those people.
00:17:24
Speaker
But like I said, as an outside person bringing in foreign currency, this was heaven, man.
00:17:30
Speaker
I was like splashing stuff around, buying branded clothes there.
00:17:35
Speaker
And I think it set me back like one-fifth, one-tenth of what it would have here.
00:17:41
Speaker
And you get good stuff.
00:17:42
Speaker
So maybe if Pakistan just sort of upped their...
00:17:48
Speaker
image a little bit, I would recommend it to people to go shopping for holidays because you guys would really get a bang for your buck over there and still see some different kind of culture and everything.
Cost of Living: Pakistan vs. Dubai
00:18:01
Speaker
I'm not here to sell it.
00:18:02
Speaker
I know how people perceive some countries as more dangerous than others, but from the outside, it does seem like that, right?
00:18:09
Speaker
Even as a Pakistani, I sit back.
00:18:12
Speaker
I haven't been there in years and I just start going, you know, you start forgetting, you start going, oh, no, it's a war zone.
00:18:17
Speaker
If I go there, it's a war.
00:18:19
Speaker
Like the metro areas, the urban areas will be just people fighting with guns, shooting at each other.
00:18:24
Speaker
And, you know, there might be dangerous areas, just like there are, like I said before, in different cities.
00:18:32
Speaker
most of it seems fine.
00:18:34
Speaker
Everyone's out and about.
00:18:35
Speaker
Holy crap, you can go on a weeknight to any restaurant and there are waiting lines there.
00:18:41
Speaker
And I'm thinking how, you know, it's just life is just busy there and people just decide to live it up and do the thing and not be shackled down.
00:18:52
Speaker
So that aspect has got to be great, you know, and I also feel like,
00:18:56
Speaker
As a comedian, sometimes I feel like, you know, in places like that, your humor kind of develops even more because that's the way you make sense or just stay sane.
00:19:09
Speaker
So that kind of develops your ability to laugh at more things, to find the funny in it because, yeah, otherwise you'd just be crazy.
00:19:18
Speaker
Okay, so there's a lot of
Comedy Tours and International Performances
00:19:20
Speaker
I think I should go back more often.
00:19:24
Speaker
I've had a few chats there, so I'm kind of excited about traveling a lot.
00:19:27
Speaker
There are a few shows very close to finishing up my special.
00:19:33
Speaker
If you've been following us, then keep a lookout on the Sal and Rushdie pages as well, because my comic friend Rushdie and I, we're going to be announcing dates soon on a new special.
00:19:43
Speaker
So that's really cool.
00:19:45
Speaker
We've been working hard on new material, and I think it's almost there.
00:19:49
Speaker
And we're going to take that on the road, not just in Dubai, but a few places, uh, just finalizing details.
00:19:54
Speaker
I'm super excited to, cause I, cause I haven't, you know, done a tour in a while and it'll be nice to get out, uh, on the road and, and meet people in different places, Pakistan included.
00:20:06
Speaker
I love performing there.
00:20:08
Speaker
I'm hoping, uh, actually this is a little shout, like a little search.
00:20:12
Speaker
So if you're a listener in Egypt or Saudi or any of the Gulf countries, hell anywhere actually in the world.
00:20:19
Speaker
You know, you have any idea about how to get us hooked up to the local scene to speak to some event promoters there to get our show over.
00:20:29
Speaker
Please reach out to us because reach out to me because I'm serious about it.
00:20:34
Speaker
Like I said, I've already been finalizing some most a few countries.
00:20:39
Speaker
But I want to keep adding because this is exciting.
00:20:41
Speaker
I'm excited about the new show.
00:20:43
Speaker
I'm excited about the work I put in.
00:20:45
Speaker
I'm excited about seeing how well it travels and make you guys laugh.
00:20:49
Speaker
And can I can it be relatable?
00:20:50
Speaker
Because I think that for me is the biggest thing about comedy is can I take this and really get people to laugh at it regardless of where I am?
00:21:00
Speaker
And I know some people I'll never be able to reach unless I do silent comedy or something of that sort to people who don't speak English or my language.
00:21:11
Speaker
What is my language?
00:21:12
Speaker
I guess English and Urdu.
00:21:16
Speaker
I don't really perform in Urdu, so why am I even bringing that up?
00:21:19
Speaker
Anywho, my point is, my point being that I do want to reach out to the max audience
00:21:27
Speaker
people that I can all right in the meantime all right so that's enough about me a couple of things like I always do is talk about the shows I'm watching I'm watching Reboot which has Keegan in it from Key and Peele and into two episodes it's all right I'm not a big comedy sitcom fan I'm not easily invested in them I don't know why there are very few that grab me but I'm this one's
00:21:52
Speaker
Kind of on the verge, so I'm going to keep watching it
Review of Netflix's 'Blockbuster'
00:21:55
Speaker
What disappointed me was Blockbuster on Netflix.
00:21:59
Speaker
So, first of all, I can't believe Melissa, the actress who played Amy on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, is in this.
00:22:06
Speaker
So far, I couldn't finish.
00:22:10
Speaker
I stopped at like seven, eight minutes into the episode.
00:22:14
Speaker
I was like, this is terrible.
00:22:16
Speaker
This has all the signs of being a terrible show.
00:22:22
Speaker
I don't know what it is about it.
00:22:23
Speaker
None of the characters appealed to me immediately.
00:22:25
Speaker
I'm being harsh here.
00:22:27
Speaker
I'm going to go back and try to finish that first episode.
00:22:30
Speaker
And if you're watching the show and you think it gets better, then motivate me, please.
00:22:35
Speaker
But seven, eight minutes into it.
00:22:37
Speaker
I'm very, I think, you know, the internet has spoiled us.
00:22:39
Speaker
So I watched Fluffy's new stand-up special.
00:22:42
Speaker
And in five minutes again, I was like, oh, this sounds crap.
00:22:45
Speaker
And I switched it off.
00:22:47
Speaker
So I hope people don't do that to my show.
00:22:49
Speaker
Please don't do that.
00:22:50
Speaker
Please give it at least 15 minutes.
00:22:53
Speaker
That's what I've watched.
Podcast Wrap-Up and Future Plans
00:22:56
Speaker
That's what's been going on in my life, guys.
00:22:59
Speaker
I got to run off now because I've got a show tonight as well with Rushdie again.
00:23:03
Speaker
We're performing live.
00:23:04
Speaker
And Rami's going to join me in another comic.
00:23:06
Speaker
I'm excited about that.
00:23:07
Speaker
So I got to get ready for that.
00:23:09
Speaker
Enjoy your week ahead.
00:23:11
Speaker
I'll be posting more episodes.
00:23:13
Speaker
So keep coming back.
00:23:16
Speaker
Or as a dog would say, woof.
