Hello

Tactics Tuesday: West Ham's Setup

00:00:10
Josh Keech
and welcome to the Daily West Ham Podcast, the only place to catch everything West Ham five days a week. I'm Josh Keats, your host, joined today by Tom and Jacob Elkins. How are you both doing today?
00:00:20
officialgspn
Hiya mate, doing really well, thank you mate.
00:00:22
Josh Keech
Good.
00:00:22
Jacob
Yeah, yeah, very good.
00:00:23
Josh Keech
How are you doing, Jacob? Good. Brilliant. Well, I want

Goalkeeper Dilemma: Who Starts?

00:00:27
Josh Keech
to kick off today. We're going to be talking about its Tactics Tuesday. So we're going to be we just discussing how we're going to be setting up for the the season moving forward. Obviously, you know we've got a very active transfer window and that's coming up in ah future episodes, but wanting to be discussing with the current sort of setup and players we've got at the moment, how we want to see things lining up and and how we how we particularly pick pick the formation, pick the lineup, who's playing where.
00:00:48
Josh Keech
and and just the style of play as well. I know the manager's got his guidance, but we want to be saying something different, obviously, following the back of Moise's era. But um we to start with, it's going to be a really easy one. ah We're going to take the goalkeeper's to start with. I want to hear your thoughts, obviously, off the back of the with the window. We've obviously now got three sort of seasoned keepers, shall we say. We've got Fabianski, Ariola, and Wes Fodringham now just recently joining. But I want to hear your guys' thoughts on how you'd deal with that situation. Obviously, you all we want to get the most game time and any one person to play.
00:01:21
officialgspn
So I think that firstly, we have a really strong goalkeeper lineup this year. I think the fact that we've taken Wes Fodgingham from, obviously he got relegated, but he faced so many shots as a relegation keeper. I think it's it's good to have someone that played a full year of Premier League football as a third choice behind two very seasoned pros who have played at a really high level and have performed consistently well for us in the past. Obviously Fabianski has been with us for quite a few years now and he's he's always played really well and then our reodor it seems like has kind of raised the bar when it comes to goalkeeping for West Ham. I think he's probably one of the most underrated keepers in the league if I'm honest. I don't think he gets the kind of recognition he deserves because obviously because he plays for West Ham and I think that's how a lot of West Ham players
00:02:12
officialgspn
sort of full foul to that oh you know it's just West Ham so we don't give them the praise they deserve but no really really happy with the Godkeeping situation and I think it the starting one to three order of the keepers kind of writes itself I think Ariana is obviously number one for me he's Well, like I said, i I've sung his praises massively and then Fabianzki is the kind of season number two who can come in and deputize so effectively whenever we need him. And then, you know, we've got a number three, if any of those two get injured, who's also very decent standard Premier League keeper who can come and play, you know, cup games and it's good for the training ground or will be good, hopefully for the general change of room outs there.

Analyzing Defender Options

00:03:00
Jacob
Yeah, I mean, I think it will be very interesting. um and We've got three very experienced capable managers now. um I think that To be honest, I'm confident Fabianzky will stay number two, um but obviously, Foderingham's come in, watched him a bit in pre-season, looks good. He's got a few years on Fabianzky as well. He's probably not going to want to be third choice, you know um starting every game for Sheffield. um But obviously, you know I can't see Fabianzky being third choice, but
00:03:44
Jacob
We'll see. We don't know. We don't know what Lopategi is going to do. we all All we know is that Ariola is going to be first.
00:03:47
Josh Keech
Okay.
00:03:49
Jacob
um so yeah
00:03:51
Josh Keech
It's tricky, ain't I? 100% areolas first. No, there's nothing that's going to change that at all, is it really?
00:03:57
Jacob
no
00:03:57
Josh Keech
I think this is probably the weird one, but I think I can see Fodgingham a second choice, which might be a bit controversial, but the reason I think about it, we look at a few of the players that have gone out now, obviously, Jog Bonner recently departing, and he had a very much much more of a wind down ah center back this season.
00:04:12
Josh Keech
I can almost see at this time, he's getting to that point where, you know, he's probably going to be on the way out the door soon. I got don't know.
00:04:18
officialgspn
Yeah, you think this is the year where he kind of gets phased out.
00:04:21
Josh Keech
Yeah, I think it might be 39 years old. He played between they play more than I expected last season. 10 matches played, 21 goals conceded in 10 matches, which doesn't you know shout out as being particularly great. I think most people wouldn't be particularly happy with that. i know on the whole most goals conceded that we've seen in a long time at West Ham but one clean sheet out of 10 and 21 goals conceded is you know it's not not particularly what I'd like to see from second choice which is probably going to be a bit rogue but because I do respect the way that he's put in for the club but I definitely can see potentially a bit more of a wind down phase this season but um but it'd be interesting to see who Lobotage decides to favour following on from pre-season um
00:05:03
Josh Keech
moving Moving on then I'm going to break the defence down into left back and and right back and then go into the centre back sort of following on from that but I think it's been a pretty clear cut really at left at both positions right now because they're both where we don't have particularly too much hot experience now that Ben Johnson's left but um but obviously at left back we've got either Cresswell or Emerson both pretty the main considering choices but I think for me it's going to be definitely Emerson but but how would you guys split both the positions out?
00:05:31
officialgspn
I like Emerson a lot. I think he's a style of left back that we've not really had in quite a while. I think his ability with the ball and going forward, his kind of creative numbers, I think ah a lot more exciting than Aaron Cresswell. I love Aaron Cresswell. He's been a brilliant servant to the club.
00:05:51
officialgspn
What a man, what a player. I'm glad that we kept him if I'm honest. I think, again, he's one that's really good for the the kind of culture of the club because he knows what it is to play for West Ham. He's been with us in the the bad times and he was, you know, with us when we won the conference league. So I think it's good to have those long um those long servants of the club staying i like it i like the fact that he is also a squad option you know he can be he can be used as a left center back in about three obviously he can play at left back his delivery is always really consistent you know i don't think he's ever going to give you a 10 out of 10 but he's never really going to drop below like a you know very strong seven out of 10 really i think he's really solid so i like the fact that he's still there and emison may be slightly worse defensively but
00:06:39
officialgspn
if we're trying to dominate games more i think he's a much more suitable player to dominate possession and try and dictate the play from left back so yeah i'm i'm happy and then on the other side it's currently just Kufal isn't it really who i'm not unhappy about obviously we'll i'm sure we'll have further discussions about who we might be signing at the right back position but yeah Kufal i like him uh Obviously, he's not getting any younger. He's not quite a spring chicken anymore But I don't think that stops him from being a really solid Premier League player and he's been a really good servant of West Ham So yeah, not really too much to complain about
00:07:17
Jacob
Yeah um I mean in in fallbacks I think we're in a good place obviously we're very much the same as last season at the moment if anything slightly weaker at this stage with basically Emerson and Kufau, you know, they're going to start um at this time. um I think, I think so far has really come on. He's shown a completely different side, especially last season. um I can't remember exactly how many assists you got. I think it might have been 11.
00:07:50
Jacob
something like that maybe not quite that many um but that's kind of a side to him that i never anticipate and anticipated seeing you know someone that can whip a dangerous ball he always looked very one-dimensional you know he'd run down the wing, get to the corner, turn around, pass it back. But he's he's um he's really come on. And obviously, technically, Emerson, very good. um you know he's He's scored a couple of great goals over the years. um Yeah, I think think we're in a good place.
00:08:26
Josh Keech
Yeah, it's an interesting one with Kufa because I think it goes very underrated about the value for money that we got from both the both the check boys, really, because between both of them, you know, looking at him and him and Suchek together in that year, pretty probably around 20, 20 million, I think it was in the end for both, which I think is just ridiculous if you said about getting two first team starters now, or I know Suchek is probably a bit more in rotation, but actually, I think it's pretty, it's pretty mental when you think about the value of money in the market at that time of two quality players for less than 25 mil.
00:08:54
Josh Keech
but um But yeah, as I say, I've broken down the fallbacks first. We're going to move into the centre backs. But first, it's time for a brief a brief word from our sponsor.
00:09:44
Josh Keech
Now, moving on then to the centre back, so I think this is probably going to be one of the more tricky situations. I think

Midfield Dynamics

00:09:49
Josh Keech
there'll be a lot of rotation in this spot, but I know formation wise, I'm guessing we're going to be all assuming pretty much a four-back for the season. I think it's pretty clear cut that we're going to be in that that sort of sense. There may be a bit of a shuffle around maybe for some of the difficult teams, but I think for the for the case, and most of the time, we'll be in a four-back kind of formation. I know, I think Lomotague mostly favours that 4-3-3.
00:10:08
Josh Keech
and pivoting some of the midfielders around and where they go forward and back, depending on how defensive we need to be. But centre-back wise, I think it's going to be, you know, we've just signed Kilman, which is obviously fantastic. So I think he's, I can't see him moving to not be a first team starter, but how would you guys then space it out, obviously with the second spot and obviously with everyone's attitudes, you know, because someone's got to not play.
00:10:31
officialgspn
So with the recent signing, the very recent signing of Tadebo, not very happy with how I pronounced that, but I think you you probably go with him. I think the the sort of coup is to basically steal him from underneath Juventus' nose.
00:10:51
officialgspn
shows the intent that we have to firstly play him. I don't think we'd be able to steal him from a club like Juventus if he thought he wasn't going to start. And secondly, the draw that West Ham has at the moment to be able to take these guys who've got, you know, big potential suitors on the table and we've been able to nab them. It's really positive. I'm really happy with it. And I think he starts. And I think that sense about pairing with him and Kilman, I think is so solid.
00:11:20
officialgspn
really solid got great physical presence i know kilman hasn't got massive amounts of pace but i know that sedivo is not no slouch at all so yeah i'm really happy with that and then you know rotation options of agurd and mavropanos is really really solid you think you look at most other Premier League teams, obviously barring the big boys, you don't really see many teams that have better depth in centre back than us right now, so so I'm happy. And also looks like Kurt Zuma's out the door, so also something that I'm not unhappy about. If we can get a decent amount of money for him.
00:11:55
officialgspn
I wasn't always massively happy with him at center back last year. I think he's, he's obviously really good in his experience help, but I think physically like his lack of agility and his, his lack of kind of pace, I think got us unstuck a couple of times. So I'm i'm happy with where we are compared to where we were at the end of the last season.
00:12:19
Jacob
yeah i think it's difficult um this one especially now you know we've just signed to diva i'm pretty sure that's how you say it um and he's basically not going to get any chance to show himself in preseason maybe he doesn't need to i'm sure the scouts have been watching him for some time um i think it's more about how how we are actually going to line up um Lopategi has used five backs in pre-season. Maybe it's just to sort of play more defenders, see the fit, how it's going to work. um But yeah, it's definitely the the changes we needed have come, obviously. um And yeah, Zuma's not been at it for the past couple of seasons. Ogg Bonner's same for him. um Yeah, it's exciting.
00:13:15
Jacob
um exciting time, definitely.
00:13:20
Josh Keech
Yeah, I think Zoom is definitely going to be on the way out the door. I think it's been so much it has been rumored recently. And I think Saudi Arabia has been the main suitor, I think, in in what's been going forward. But it'll be interesting to see because it'll be just a huge slab off the wage bill.
00:13:34
Josh Keech
I think it's I can't remember how much his wages actually currently are weekly, but I know he's he's one of the highest paid. and And I think for the quality, as you say, from last season, that we're talking about how, you know, from from previous signings of the both the Czech lads compared to
00:13:48
officialgspn
.
00:13:48
Josh Keech
Zuma's performance in the last couple of seasons compared to Valley for money. I think if if we let it progress any further we're going to be probably hitting on the flaws of a loss in in in in performance and also the amount of money we're paying out when that could be towards some more quality players and steering the club in the right direction we should be going in.
00:13:53
officialgspn
. . .
00:14:04
Josh Keech
So it'll be interesting to see as we are approaching towards the end of the window now what the couple more weeks left yet but you know getting that interest and seeing if we can offload some of that that wage would be something that would be quite of ah of interest but I think, I think the next big thing is for you guys, where, where are you going to see the midfield set up? Because obviously we've got quite a lot now coming in. We've had the recent signing of Guido Rodriguez, and then obviously as well, we've got all the existing people that have been shining through, obviously with Kudus and, and, um and Pekatar are absolutely smashing it last, last season in their, in, in, in bits of the midfield and on the wing. How would you guys structure it? Would you play three in midfield or do a, you know, like a four, two, three, one, where, where would you kind of structure the team?
00:14:49
officialgspn
It's difficult, isn't it? not Not seeing the preseason with all of the midfield kind of interchanging together. It's difficult to kind of decide who you want to start over who because the way that the signings have kind of been relatively staggered throughout preseason. So I think realistically, whatever we go with,
00:15:14
officialgspn
It's a really strong infield. It's got good depth. I love the physical profile of the it. It's big, strong lads who are determined. They're tough tacklers. They're grafted, which I think is exactly the sort of player you want to pair with like a piqueta to allow him the the freedom to be able to play in the expressive, Brazilian way that he likes to play.
00:15:37
officialgspn
So really happy with the depth and ah particularly the Guido Rodriguez signing. I really like his profile. He seems like a really good solid midfielder to to add a lot of depth and obviously pairing him with Alvarez. I still love Sucek. I'm, you know, i'm I'm still a big fan of his. I don't think he's had any, I know his numbers haven't been as good, but I think for what he does in the team, I think he's still just as effective as he ever has been really, maybe could use a few more goals, but in a in a squad, he's exactly someone that you want. ah another like Back to what I was saying before with a leader in the squad, someone who's been with the team for quite a long time, so another positive influence. If you ask me to pick, depending on what we had, I quite like
00:16:22
officialgspn
I know that La Pate, he likes to have a three. So you're thinking probably you go Alvarez and Rodriguez, and then in front of them, depending on who you have further forwards, you'd say either Paquetta, maybe he's Paquetta further forward. You can have James Ward Prowse in there. Also, depending on who else you want. I don't know if you could try and bring kudos back just to try and squeeze him into the team because he has got so much quality, but, but yeah, whatever we go for, it's really positive and I'm really happy.
00:16:51
Jacob
yeah i think if anything um we've almost got too much depth now um in my opinion yeah i think i i think so i think it's it's never a bad thing obviously i'm not complaining i'm not saying that we shouldn't have made signings um but the only thing i'll say is we've we now seem to have quite a few of the similar sort of style players and i'm not sure how
00:16:57
officialgspn
Do you think?
00:17:18
Jacob
we're going to be able to incorporate all of them, you know, within one team with the likes of obviously Alvarez. We're not sure on his current fitness. um Is he how how much the first part of the season he's going to potentially miss um with Rodriguez, soo check Alvarez, you know, very similar sort of anchors, um you know, Alvarez is definitely got that um ability to carry the ball forward and definitely probably the most technically gifted out of the three. um bias yeah' It's difficult um to see whether he's going to go for a two with three in front or whether he's going to go for a three with
00:18:08
Jacob
you know, two wingers. um Yeah, I mean, it's not a bad thing to have this amount of depth. um It's just trying to find the best combination amongst these talented midfielders that we've got now. um You know, especially having a Argentinian World Cup winner um in the team, you know,
00:18:33
Jacob
That's a great thing to have. you know It can't be a bad thing for us. um Yeah, I think it's just think it's just going to be finding that that perfect balance. And you know I think we've got one of the best you know all-round midfields in the league. I'd

Forward Lineup Strategies

00:18:48
Jacob
go that far, probably.
00:18:49
Josh Keech
I think it's fantastic really that we're having this debate because it means we've got, we're going to have a brilliant bench regardless going forward, depending on who starts and who doesn't. I think that's obviously injuries and and and ah everything moving forward. Hopefully once fully fit, we can really see but a proper team in the midfield shine. And I think you're right. It's probably one of the best in the league. We'll be moving on shortly then to forwards, but first it's time for a word from our second sponsor.
00:19:38
Josh Keech
brilliant then moving on to the forwards I think for me this is going to be probably one of the more clear cut ones although I think there's probably going to be a bit of a maybe a bit of a disagreement between a few of us on how we do the subs but for me I'm going to just be very bold off the start obviously with the players we've got I know we've got a few more you know, strikers and forwards now that have a bit more versatility which I've been preaching about for the whole of the, but before the transfer window. I think it's good to see the players we have been bringing in with the likes of Guillerme and also obviously Somerville as well recently being joining. I think both of those add that much added depth along the front work row where we can actually see a bit more value added now.
00:20:14
Josh Keech
and being able to have that that rotation there. But I think for me, what I'm most excited to see about is Fulcrum up top. I couldn't believe to see we've actually signed, we've signed another striker, ah which is fantastic news. And I'm hoping that the curse has been lifted seeing a lot of the, and I think a lot of the time we look at highlight reels and how, ah how players are in their respective leagues. And that gives us an inclination, but obviously Premier League's just as different to every other league as it is but it's always nice to see some of the uh where the players shine the most in the in their respective leagues they've come from. For me I'm really looking forward to seeing how he shines up top and I've been preaching as well about the left wing it's being a bit absent trying to get a packet are obviously playing on the left but I think
00:20:55
Josh Keech
we're more utilised playing that in our winger there and playing him in the hole and I think that's probably what I'm now glad to see we've got Somerville joining from Leeds obviously and I think most of the Leeds fan are they're in tears now knowing that we've just bagged one of their ah well their best players last season with a with ah an absolute worldy of a season for him being it was the third third joint goal scorer and assist ah leaders so it's brilliant in that sense I think to have that kind of versatility up the front Compared to I think we've probably been a bit starved last season but for me i'm I'm just brilliant to hear we've got a brilliant another striker and also a lot a lot more talent on the wings So what are you guys thoughts? Who would you start and how how would you sort of structure the team for the front then?
00:21:36
officialgspn
ah okay ri I'm also going to be bold. I don't think I want Somerville to start initially.
00:21:44
Josh Keech
Oh
00:21:46
officialgspn
Just because I think that Kudos has earned the right to not lose his place, because if if he doesn't start on the left wing, he doesn't start on the right, he doesn't start overboating, and I'm not as much of a fan of him in the hole as I would be as Paquetta, especially with for Krung's ability to come deep and to be kind of a big man up top and he's he's got the ability to link up play as well. I like the the interchange between him and Paquetta with Kudas and Boeham running in behind and I know that some of you can do that but with the season that Kudas had last year there's no way that you can drop him and yeah obviously it's great to have a big signing and I'd like there to be competition between them but I think you have to go with
00:22:30
officialgspn
the people who have earned that spot and Kudos was, he was unbelievable last year. I think, again, like I'll keep saying, obviously we're all biased because we're West Ham fans, but he was unbelievably good last year.
00:22:41
officialgspn
That goal against City and the last game was unbelievable.
00:22:42
Josh Keech
Aww, unbelievable.
00:22:46
officialgspn
It's crazy. and And no one talks about it. No one, you know, mentions it because he's a West Ham player, but it was amazing. and And he has genuine quality that is well beyond where we are as a club and he should be playing Champions League football, he definitely should. So to for him to lose his place over someone that we've just signed up, I just don't think it's right and I want some of it to play and I want him to get the game time. And if he pushes him out, if he pushes kudos out of the team, then that's fine. But I think he has to push him out of the team. You can't just get given the sport automatically. And I just don't know where else kudos would play if some of the plays as well, because you can't drop bow and who looks like he's going to be our captain now, which, you know, so I don't know his stuff.
00:23:33
Jacob
Yeah, I mean, I agree with you as well. I think um we're in a very blessed spot now where we actually have positions that are up for debate, you know, like coming off the back of the season that Somerville has just had. um And the fact that he's probably not going to get straight into the team just just goes to show, um you know, he's he's not going to walk in. He may maybe he feels like he deserves that.
00:24:02
Jacob
um but realistically he he doesn't get in over Bowen on the right he doesn't start you know over Cudus so yeah yeah it's just another another um really good problem for us to have you know if If kudos is form dips, that gives some of all the opportunity, you know, to jump in, make his impact, you know, continue his excellent form. He's got a whole, you know, completely different challenge ahead of him now. Um, it's, you know, one thing doing it in the championship, but if he can actually do it in this league, um, we've got an absolute bargain. Um, you know, 25 million.
00:24:48
Jacob
They were talking about his valuation being a more like 40, 45. So we've done really well there. um Yeah. Striker wise, I think, you know, full crew is a very West Ham striker. You know, he's a, he's a big lad. He's a target man. Technically very good. Um, we've got that pace and that, um, that flare in behind that will,
00:25:18
Jacob
Hopefully, you get him many, many goals. um yeah yeah i think ah think um Yeah, I think he's going to be excellent.
00:25:28
officialgspn
Yeah, definitely.
00:25:28
Josh Keech
Is, is.
00:25:29
officialgspn
I just want to, sorry mate, can I just interject? the the No, no, it's nothing bad, don't worry.
00:25:31
Josh Keech
Oh.
00:25:35
officialgspn
um The fact that it is so tough and the fact that we're having this discussion, like Jacob was saying, is an amazing problem.
00:25:40
Josh Keech
Yeah.
00:25:42
officialgspn
Like, how often as as West Ham fans recently have we looked at the bench and gone, oh, there's just nothing there. there's There's no substance. There's no kind of fight or desire to come on and grab the game by the scruff of the neck.
00:25:56
officialgspn
But now it feels like we have the guys that feel like they should be starting and will be wanting to work every day consistently to take the opportunity when it comes.
00:26:06
officialgspn
So I think it is such a good problem. And I know I'm struggling to say who I want to start, but it's it's ah it's an amazing problem and I'm happy that we have that problem.
00:26:12
Jacob
Mm hmm.

you've ah You've took the words right out of my mouth, but I think it's probably one of the best headaches to have is one of these big debates of who, everyone's so great, who do we start? I um i think a couple of things to take from that is that we just need to give Tim starting a round of applause. The word that he's put in over this window has been absolutely incredible. i don't yeah he's been an absolute dream to be just getting all of this stuff done so quickly in the window which is what we've always been saying as well is get business done nice and early nice and quick then we're not scrambling last second paying more money which for me i think has been one of the brilliant things to take away from the window overall i know we'll be going more in detail about it shortly but uh but for me i think it's probably one of the best headaches that lobotage is going to get for a while is who he starts when and where i think i do agree with you in the level of summerville i think

It'll be very interesting to see how well everyone does when they get their chances. And that also means everyone's going to be hungry for it, which is probably, I think they you say that that lack of. I guess, the not ambition, but it's that drive of going forward and getting stuff done and we've probably been struggling positions up front anyway. It's going to be a nice one to be able to see a bit of actually some support going when their substitution is made and and how that goes about. It would be brilliant with, you know, ideally I think the way I'd probably want to see it is if Kudos does play on the left and we do a bow-in on the right, full grip up. up

then obviously then we have the the decisions of maybe if we're playing more attacking then we can have War Prowse, maybe probably that more further backroll near Alvarez and have Piketa freely roaming, or if we're being a bit more rogue, if if we have got some of your playing and we want to just bring on another rotation, why not bring courtesy in the hole? It's not where he's best suited, but it provides the option to get as many balls in as we can to fork it up to get a lot in. I think that's, if we can give him a proper service,

then equally we're going to be reaping the rewards when he bangs a load of goals in.

Yeah, I think i I also like Antonio off the bench. I think Antonio is such a good player to bring off the bench.

the The physicality that he brings to, like, just harry and annoy tired defenders I think is such a ah useful asset to have. He's never going to play a full season, but someone we can just bring off if we've got 10 minutes. you know Like if we're if we're chasing a game or we want someone to go and kind of make it a bit more physical, then I think he's a great asset to have. And as well, the Tim Styden stuff, one of the best things to happen to West Ham in a long time, though the work that he's done is amazing. And I think everyone's really happy and really thankful that he's at the club and seems to be on some jet to meet everyone as soon as they sign and he's talking to them and he he seems like he's

got his his grips very much on everything that's happening, which seems to be positive right now. So, so yeah, thank you very much. tim stid and
