Host Introductions

Global Sports Podcast Network
My name is Michael Grams-O and I'll be your host for this episode. And if you can't tell by the accent, I sit firmly in the Team Toon camp. But I'm not the only Magpie on this call as I'm also joined by Ian Mackay. How's it going Ian?
00:00:32
Iain
It's going great, Michael. Good to see you.
00:00:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely fantastic. You too. And of course we are joined by two of Will Hampton's finest. Firstly, it's Chris McIntosh. How's it going, Chris?
00:00:42
Chris
Although living the dream is always living the vital prayer of dream.
00:00:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, the Vito Pereira dream. Now we'll get a bit more into that later. And we're also now joined by Nathan Edgerton. How's it going, Nathan?

Match Preview: Newcastle vs Wolves

00:01:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
If anyone hasn't clicked yet, we're here because Newcastle United hosts Wilham Wanderers on Wednesday evening. And it's safe to say both camps are a little bit more optimistic than what they were for the reverse fixture. We'll start with Wolves, Nathan. It was a tough start the campaign for you. And subsequently, you had a little bit of a change. Well, getting rid of, I should i say, god of Gary O'Neill.
00:01:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
and replacing him with Vito Pereira. Now what were your initial thoughts on O'Neill's departure and has anything changed since the appointment of Pereira?
00:01:38
Nathan
Yeah, I mean, a load has changed. I think his his arrival to Wolves has been the best thing that's happened to us this season, quite clearly. I mean, the results have had have had a quick change. But the main thing that we've noticed is just that the different approach to games and the positivity that we seem to have around the group. And I know some some people will quickly kind of label it as the manager bounce, but there's also quite clearly a lot of tactical adjustments that these he's made that have been more suited to that group of players. and Yeah, the Gary O'Neill sacking was was long overdue. I think i'm I'm not the only one in a wolf shirt that will think the same. So long overdue, but we're we've welcomed Vitorian and he's he's done a good job so far for us. We've seen some positive things. So long may his his reign continue.
00:02:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely fantastic. And Chris, we saw a little bit of distaste on this towards Gary O'Neill. There was a little bit from O'Neill back at the fans. It was quite clear to see. Why was the reason for that? Was it just results or was there a lot? So you think there was more going on?
00:02:38
Chris
Uh, it was a, I mean, it was a combination of things, the results definitely. Cause if you look back, not just this season, but the end of last, it was a long, long period of, of defeats. And, uh, with very few points on the board.
00:02:50
Chris
And then on top of that, just more and more, he felt like a rabbit in the headlights. I mean, and stuff he was saying in post-matches, like at one point he said he was dealing with a ah squad that hadn't got much Premier League experience.
00:02:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:02
Chris
But there was actually, if you look at our starting lineup, you look at the likes of. Jose Sarr and Somato and Dokti and like all these people with with massive amounts of Premier League experience and then yes there was some youngsters scattered about but there was still a lot of people there couldn't use been with us for a couple of seasons it's not like it there was loads of youngsters and they're just the things that were coming out and playing people out of position all the time saying that people weren't good enough it just felt like yeah the longer it went on I was all I'm all for giving people chances and I probably sat on the fence a lot longer than many people
00:03:36
Chris
people but by the end it was just it was too late if anything.

Newcastle's Turnaround Under Eddie Howe

00:03:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah from the outside looking in it definitely looked like something wasn't adding up because the results the club is so much better than the results were showing but Ian on the Newcastle side would you say that ah well it's been eight wins in a row for the Magpies were playing very good football significantly better than we were when we played Wolves the first time around would you say this is up there with the the best version of Newcastle United we've seen under Eddie Howe?
00:04:07
Iain
I think so. i think it's I think it's definitely developed and it's the best team that we've got. I think the yeah inclusion of Sandro Tenali as a number six and getting Bruno Gamaras to play forward has certainly given us a much much sharper cutting edge.
00:04:26
Iain
i And playing players in the positions that they really want to play in has given us a massive difference. I think that's the difference between our indifferent start and certainly from the Liverpool game, how well balanced we've looked, and maybe down to just including a right winger in the right wing position instead of trying to reinvent Joe Linton and Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes even as the right winger.
00:04:54
Iain
but I just think that gives us an attack down both sides and that gives opposition defenses twice as much to think about. so yeah, but I do think, I do think we've developed, I think Tenali's new this year.
00:05:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
absolutely.
00:05:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mhm.
00:05:06
Iain
He barely played last year before he was banned. and you know, we know Premier League might not have accepted it quite yet, but there will be by the end of the season that Tenali is world-class.
00:05:18
Iain
Ask anyone at AC Milan, they'll tell you that he's world-class.
00:05:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. Yeah, 100%. He's definitely one of our best players. And him alongside Bruno Gomadez, it almost feels a bit like a cheat code for us because I've, i've I mean, I've heard stories about the likes of Rob Lee, et cetera. I don't remember them. I was a bit too young and it almost, the way those were idolized by my dad and stuff like that, that's sort of what I feel I'm going to be like with Tenali and Bruno in 10, 15 years time when I have kids.
00:05:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'll probably won't wait that long. That sounds horrible. horrible. ah But at the same time, it's one of those where you're looking at those sort of iconic plays. And if they stay at Newcastle for sustained periods, they could well be the best two of the best sentiment fields that we've ever had midfielders that we've ever had.

Wolves' Tactical Changes with Vito Pereira

00:06:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
But just wanted to touch on there as well we spoke a lot about a change in fortune for new castle coming from playing players in their more natural position now we also saw in the summer england was struggling because they were playing the letter phone etc out of position from the conversations we were having at the start of the pod i believe that was a similar issue that gary o'neill was having at wolves is that correct
00:06:26
Chris
Nathan, do you want to go with that one?
00:06:28
Nathan
Yeah, sure, I think he... he was chopping and changing a lot week on week, and things weren't going well, so something did have to change, but the as you said, the I think Chris said it before we came on air, it's just the round pegs in round holes situation, and you've got players that are doing something well for a long period of time in the prem in a certain position, just keep them to that position. If fit if it ain't broke, why fix it? you know So I think players like Mario Lamina, who was,
00:06:58
Nathan
Often, yes, he he does have the physical attributes and some of the experience to play in various different positions. He was played at centre-half and Gary O'Neill had an alright game against Fulham and then in the next game he was played again at centre-half and it's almost like you' you've got fit centre-halves on the bench with plenty of Premier League experience.
00:07:17
Nathan
you know If you're having to play a midfielder at centre-half, it should only be in an emergency situation but don't persist with it just because he's had a one-off good game you know when we know he's a centre-mid.
00:07:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:28
Nathan
And we're seeing it now where Vital Pereira has come in and he's made just some slight adjustments where, you know, Matt Doherty, he's lost a bit of pace. Instead of playing wingback, he's now playing as a right-sided centre-half. And he's got that experience in the back five. And formation-wise, it just works. And, yeah, going forwards as well, just playing players in the positions that they used to play in and not trying to sort of force people into the starting lineup because they're on a good reign of form. I don't know.
00:07:58
Nathan
It felt a bit forced under O'Neill and now just feels like it's flowing a bit more.
00:08:01
Chris
Yeah, if I can follow up on that just because it also felt at times like he he he lacks the courage to make the strong decision to drop people when he needed to. For example, Mary Lamina was made captain in the summer, but then we go in by Andre Brazilian starting midfielder, like plays for the national team, outstanding defensive midfielder.
00:08:21
Chris
And then he was trying to shoehorn Joe Gomez, Mary Lamina and Andre into like this midfield three that wasn't working when he clearly just lacked the guts to drop the captain who was actually the weakest of the three and performing the worst he's performed for us last couple of seasons. Love Mary Lamina. He helps keep us up a couple of seasons ago, but This season all over the place and there's clear points where it was like just drop him play the two who have come in and like suit over like taking that place over and Sure enough like vittles come in and now it's two holding midfielders and the mean is looking like he might even go in this transfer window because He's struggling to get back in the team.
00:08:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:58
Chris
Yes He's had some injuries, but he's not the guy was he's lost the captaincy because he got emotional kicked off after one match, you know it and And so it just seems like he lacked the decision, the courage sometimes to make the harsh calls, you know, because he wanted to be liked by the players.
00:09:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah. Yeah.
00:09:15
Iain
I was i was just wincing it just wincing a little bit there when you mentioned Matt Doherty because I had a flashback.
00:09:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
100%. Go on in.
00:09:22
Iain
How long ago is it? His first session with the Wolves because he he went away and then came back.
00:09:26
Nathan
Was that 2018?
00:09:27
Chris
14 years ago, he's just hit his 14 year anniversary.
00:09:29
Iain
Yeah, scored up.
00:09:31
Chris
yeah
00:09:31
Iain
Right, he scored a last minute winner with a header at St James's Park.
00:09:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah might have been but it was definitely around that era it was horrible times yeah
00:09:35
Nathan
Yeah.
00:09:36
Iain
That was a long time ago. That might have been rough at times, was it? Or even before that?
00:09:42
Iain
oh
00:09:45
Iain
Yeah.
00:09:46
Chris
Yeah, he's been a great server for the club.
00:09:46
Iain
Such a good header as well. Such a good goal for an injury time goal.
00:09:48
Chris
Yeah.
00:09:50
Iain
Well worked.
00:09:51
Chris
And that's another thing that's helped with him moving into the back three while we've needed center backs because he is so strong in the air. He's arguably one of our ah strongest players in the air. We've been leaking goals.
00:10:01
Chris
We score. And if you look, we're one of the highest scorers in the league, but we're also the worst at conceding but whereas he's, and we've been conceding massively from set pieces, but him coming into the back three, you mentioned he's good in the air.
00:10:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:13
Chris
He's good in the air, both boxes. And so it's actually helped shore up that defense a little bit.
00:10:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent stuff, excellent stuff. And I think both teams are sort of showing that fluidity that we maybe weren't seeing when the first game where it came around. It was very rigid. Well, I think now we're we're almost looking at this game and expecting quite an entertaining game. I mean, Wolves fans are maybe a bit more used to it, as you say, one of the top goal scorers, one of the top conceitors. But for Newcastle, we've had a lot of pretty dismal nil-nils with Everton, 1-0 defeats to Brighton, where We couldn't, we should have scored two or three goals.
00:10:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, us that little change in shape, Ian mentioned it a bit earlier with to gnarly coming in and Bruno playing a little bit more advanced. but I think it's worth so much of a better team because of that.
00:10:58
Iain
Well, we've got somebody with Bruno who can play ah ah a forward ball.
00:11:03
Iain
He's looking to play a ball through the lines into Isaac's feet, behind the fullback into Murphy or into into Gordon.
00:11:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:11
Iain
And that just that puts you on the byline there, which is a fabulous place to be for for setting up a goal. And we didn't have that in the first half. we All of our fancy stuff was being played in front of the teams that we were playing.
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:25
Iain
We're not as bad as Arsenal and just playing for corners. We never stoop that low, but it's much better now, much better.
00:11:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
100% and as I mentioned earlier in the season we're a bit like a days ago but two stunning strikes from Harvey Barnes and Fabian Cher led Newcastle to a quite undeserved comeback victory.
00:11:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
do both sides see this fixture going? Well we'll find out after this quick advert from Zencaster.

Global Sports Podcast Network
absolutely fantastic again thank you very much and welcome back to the special crossover podcast ahead of new castle versus wolves on wednesday night now i touched briefly on the game earlier in the season uh... which feels like an age ago a lot happened for both teams but before we go into part two i'm just going to give a ah rundown of the players that are out for both clubs so for new castle it's jamala cells emil craft joe willach calum wilson and nick pope are all out injured and there are some small doubts over the fitness of Alexander Isaac and Sven Botman. Ian, would you say based off what we've seen from Newcastle and aunt Eddie Howe in the past, Knox probably still mean that Isaac and Botman will at least feature on Wednesday night?
00:13:02
Iain
m Yeah, it's hard to second guess him now because they've all they've all played alright, but I think the double performance with Dan Byrne and Sven Botman away at Tottenham, then away Arsenal.
00:13:14
Iain
And this will be a bit of a shock. I think that means that Fab Shah will be on the bench. I think Botman and Byrne will keep their centre to half positions, but I mean.
00:13:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah so
00:13:25
Iain
We all love Fab Schar, so that could easily be wrong. Now, I didn't know, I mean, I heard that Isaac was having a rest for the yeah FA Cup match. I was surprised just as soon as Asula scored his wonder goal after about 58 minutes or an hour or something yesterday, which should have given him his confidence to go on and get a couple more.
00:13:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:46
Iain
and He pulled him straight off without the forward to come on.
00:13:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:13:52
Iain
So I'm I would not be at all surprised if he's still not sure whether he's actually going to be fit or not. He's at might sit on the bench and a Sula start with these are hopefully able to come on or the other way around.
00:14:05
Iain
But I don't think you'll see he's like playing play 90 minutes on Wednesday. I'd be amazed if he gets to halftime.
00:14:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, absolutely not.
00:14:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And on the wolf's side, the injury list is, I'm going to be honest, significantly harder a print to pronounce than Joe Willick, Callum Wilson and Nick Pope. But I will give it a go. Versa, Muscarra, Barbecue, Buba, Castra, Iore, Enzo, Gonzalez, Sak.
00:14:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sasa, Casa Deglitch and Tottie Gomez are all confirmed to be out, but Craig Dawson, Nelson Sommedo and Mario Lamina are all down as doubtful, or at least that's what I've seen. Is there anyone that I've missed there at all who's out and how does the fitness of the three doubtful players look? Do you think either of them, or any of them, should I say, will get a crack and start on Wednesday?
00:14:54
Chris
Okay, I have something.
00:14:55
Nathan
and the notable, sorry, we we're just kind of looking at each other there, see who's going. The notable one, I think, is the limina situation. We're not too sure what what's going on, really. I mean, Vito Pereira has kind of said, you know, he's got to make his mind up and we don't know where his head is at.
00:15:12
Nathan
I mean, as we mentioned earlier, he was captain for the first part of the season and then had a bit of an outburst at West Ham and since then it's kind of been, yeah, his his body language around games when he's come on and he's had a couple of knocks and illness in quotation marks.
00:15:27
Nathan
So yeah, but I just wanted to say he did a cracking job on the old pronunciation there.
00:15:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:30
Nathan
That was was very impressive.
00:15:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bye for now.
00:15:32
Iain
Yeah, I tell you what, I didn't realise you had somebody called Barbecue Samara. I wanted him to invite me to he to his Barbecue Samara would be fantastic.
00:15:43
Chris
bebi card traore
00:15:44
Iain
that's a well Whoever that was, he said.
00:15:45
Chris
What I will say is a couple of names there, I mean, like, you know, Fringe if that, Enzo, for example, that you mentioned, he's just a youngster, he's not even breached the first team, so it's not really a relative.
00:15:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:58
Chris
Kalizic, yeah, he's been out for a long time with like his third or fourth ACL in however many years, it's ridiculous.
00:16:04
Iain
Oh dear.
00:16:05
Chris
lamina yeah i think even if he's fit wouldn't start as i mentioned because i think he he's a backup now to to andre and jao gomez for me the biggest intrigue there is whether somatos fits or not because if somato plays Then, because we've seen, we've seen Rodrigo Gomez cover his spot recently while, Samado is out. He's done really well. Ironically, a player that, uh, Gary Nilsud said wasn't for now was for the future, not ready for the premiership. Vittor's come in, started playing him. He's played left wing back. He's played right wing wing back. He's played left wing and he's done outstanding. every time, whichever wing he's on, he's doing the business. So this youngster is doing the job to the point that I think if Samedo comes in, it'll be interesting to see if Rodrigo Gomez has earned, I think arguably earned, start higher at the pitch, because Huang, I think a lot of the fans would be saying, should be on the bench. I don't think necessarily he will be, but I think he's pushing Huang for that let that wing spot at the moment, if.
00:17:04
Chris
If he's not needed to cover Samedo, if I'm making any sense, then Rodrigo Gomez could move up front. So front three would potentially be Strandlas and Gedge, which is get as to anyone who doesn't get the pronunciation. And, and then Rodrigo Gomez.
00:17:19
Iain
Where is Kunia fit into that then? Is he not in the front three?
00:17:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just behind.
00:17:23
Nathan
where wherever he fancies, wherever he fancies.
00:17:24
Chris
behind he's like a floating he's literally he wears the number 10 for a reason and he's given the freedom very much to roam nowadays so he'll float somewhere in that midfield usually between yeah
00:17:24
Iain
Right.
00:17:30
Iain
Right.
00:17:33
Iain
They probably become very familiar with Sandro Tenali tour of Wednesday night, I guess, if that's the case.
00:17:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah i think we'll have try and have tenali stick to him like glue but
00:17:39
Nathan
Yeah.
00:17:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
We know how good Coon is and we know how easily you can get away from players. So that should be the probably the key battle of the game. But Ian, from that game that we had earlier in the season and probably more of what you've seen from Wolves this season, are there any players that are ahead of Wednesday night you're looking at and thinking, yeah, they could really cause Newcastle some problems?
00:18:03
Iain
I'm just worried about Matt Doherty turning up on a far post in the last minute. No, that's not that's not the only worry I've got.
00:18:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not
00:18:11
Iain
Of course, Cunha is is one of the top strikers in the Premier League. You know, he's fantastic and he's not even a striker. He's a number 10.
00:18:22
Iain
Huang tends to turn up against us regularly. although I must admit, I mean, I've always admired from afar when I've seen on this season, I don't know if he's quite there. Has he come back from a really long injury?
00:18:38
Chris
He's been in and out, so basically he hasn't been the same since he went to the Asia Cup last spring, because he went away with that with career at that point.
00:18:43
Iain
Right.
00:18:46
Chris
If you remember, is it was that Klinsman was manager and basically there was a big, there was loads of trouble with there with their team. I think they got knocked out of the tournament earlier than expected and there was a lot of infighting and apparently he wasn't keeping them very fit.
00:18:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:58
Chris
He has not been the same since that.
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow.
00:18:59
Chris
He came back started the season then went out with a hamstring I think it was for a few weeks and he's just not yeah he's not quite been the same players he has scored two goals in the last few games but aside from that one was a gift like uh against Manu it was the it was the late goal and Kunya basically did all the hard work and just gifted him the winning pass for the goal and then the other was off a free kick uh set piece situation so but out in open play he's uh he's still being played but the wall I mean Nathan I'm sure you can back me up on this that
00:19:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:31
Chris
I've always been Mr. Positive Swords, and I do give him more benefit than some, but I think there's a lot of people calling for him to go back to the bench, as I mentioned, and maybe someone like Gomez take his spot.
00:19:41
Nathan
Yeah, I think a big thing with Wang and his form this season is just the competition that we actually have in the positions going forwards. I mean, we mentioned Rodrigo Gomez, who hasn't been given much of a look in, but Gonzalo Guedes this season has been a real bright spark going forwards early on, sort of only coming off the bench and a few sort of cut performances. And then he really started to catch the eye and he's been a big threat going forwards. And I would say consistently putting in sort of eight out of 10 performances going forward. It's like a solid, solid performer for us this season, as well as Strand Larsson, who's been, in my opinion, excellent considering our position in the table and how much defending we've had to do in certain games. And Carlos Forbes has had cameos coming off the bench and of course, Kounier as well. So there's there's plenty of players in that sort of attacking area where Huang, when he hasn't been delivering, there's other guys that are there to come in.
00:20:35
Chris
Yeah, I think the he's great.
00:20:35
Iain
He's a very willing target man strand last, isn't he?
00:20:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:20:39
Iain
He leads the line really well.
00:20:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:20:39
Chris
And I think, yeah, and I think that's a big difference as well with Huang because last season at points for large periods, Huang was essentially playing as the number nine because we didn't have a proper front man.
00:20:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
of so
00:20:48
Chris
And now we have in Strandlass and so Huang is back to the wings and potentially that's not, even though he's kind of came in as that player, that's not actually where he's been most successful for us is double digit goals last season.
00:20:57
Iain
Hmm.

Key Players and Tactical Roles

00:20:59
Chris
was playing essentially as the, as the front man. And now he's back out on the wing, but Strandlarson is, yeah, he's, he's fantastic.
00:21:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:21:05
Chris
Seven goals already. A couple of assists in his first season in the premier league and a team that has been in a relegation battle.
00:21:11
Iain
Yeah.
00:21:11
Chris
He's a, he's a brilliant worker.
00:21:13
Iain
He's he's nonstop.
00:21:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
A hundred percent.
00:21:15
Iain
That was the last name I was going to put forward to be worried about.
00:21:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:18
Iain
He didn't score obviously against Forrest, but he got it. He should have scored two. I still don't know how either of them were kept out. It wasn't anything that he did wrong. It just ah ah incredible point blank save in particular that I can i can remember.
00:21:32
Chris
He's not scored in a winning game yet, by the way, just so you know that.
00:21:32
Nathan
Yeah.
00:21:32
Iain
Yeah, he's good.
00:21:35
Chris
So if he scores, you've got a chance of not losing.
00:21:35
Iain
Or shall we we let him get one in the first 10 minutes?
00:21:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh.
00:21:38
Chris
Yeah, yeah.
00:21:39
Nathan
Yeah please do.
00:21:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think strand larson is probably one of the the reasons why i think the argument will be there for damburn to start over fabian share like you mentioned earlier uh botman and burn have had a fantastic sort of relationship with the two center backs with share being out suspended but i think when you've got a target man that good in the air you need your best aerial defender Marking them a hundred percent all throughout the entire game, and I think that's damn burn.
00:22:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think any defender Realistically has more of a chance of keeping them quiet than damn burn But I've got a really bad feeling that we're gonna be so worried about the big man that the little number ten Just weaves his way in and out of players and does a little dance before putting it in the back of the net So that's that is a worry.
00:22:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm gonna be honest. I am a little worried about wolves offensively
00:22:29
Iain
but I think Michael, both these teams love getting on the front foot. I mean, I think that's one of the major changes, isn't it, since Pereira has come in. Wolves are always looking to move forward.
00:22:41
Iain
I think we're going to have a great game.
00:22:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:43
Iain
I think we'll be goals at either end. I just hope we score one more than Wolves do. yeah I'd be happy to watch a 4-3. I'm more than happy.
00:22:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:53
Chris
I mean, we we were just begging for clean sheets, to be honest with that, conceded that many goals.
00:22:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
100% Sam.
00:22:56
Nathan
Yeah.
00:22:58
Chris
yeah As much as I love, you know, these entertaining games, I'll be so happy for whether it's whether it's a boring away from home, you know, because you guys, you know, you like you say, you you've had a good season, so I'll take away from home a nil-nil, a boring one nil, like nil-nil and stink the place out if it gets us a point, because points are vital for us more than anything, stay ahead of Ipswich, or even just like a scrappy one nil win.
00:23:03
Iain
You want a 1-0.
00:23:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:22
Chris
It won't be because we can't, whisper you know, although we do saying that we haven't mentioned we do have a new central defender. We've already signed one this transfer window. We bought Emmanuel Agbadou. So he played his first game for us this weekend against Bristol City in the Cup.
00:23:35
Chris
Quite rightly, I think this will put him straight in even only after like two days training, because the Cup game was a good chance for him to kind of obviously play alongside people, get some connection with the team outside of the pressures of the Premier League, you know, against the lower league opposition.
00:23:49
Iain
how they How did he do?
00:23:49
Chris
So he's come in for.
00:23:51
Chris
I mean, he did well, he played on the left of the central three, the the three center backs. He's big, he's ah six foot something, I can't remember, he's a big stocky lad. He's strong on the ball.
00:24:02
Chris
Like it was a couple of times in the game, someone tried to get the ball off him and he wasn't having it. He just basically sent them flying.
00:24:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:08
Chris
is He's a bit of a beast, but he looks commanding.
00:24:11
Chris
and He's from, is it Ren it's pronounced Nathan in France?
00:24:15
Iain
No.
00:24:16
Chris
16 million euros up front.
00:24:16
Nathan
house or something yeah
00:24:19
Chris
Yeah, 16 million euros up front or something like that. yeah, he he looks a good piece of work.
00:24:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow.
00:24:24
Chris
So we'll see. But obviously it's only it's going to be his first Premier League game. So it'll be interesting to see how he how he does against strong opposition.
00:24:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:32
Nathan
I don't know if there's a bigger deep end than playing against Ezak in your first Premier League game if he does start because at the minute that is Yeah That'll be a test to say the very least
00:24:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, absolutely not.
00:24:36
Chris
Yeah.
00:24:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he's in full.
00:24:43
Chris
But he kind of has to start.
00:24:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is it eight goals in eight games?
00:24:45
Chris
Sorry.
00:24:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
F... is that goes at nine?
00:24:50
Iain
Isaac is 9, 9 and 8.
00:24:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nine.
00:24:53
Iain
Well in fact it's it's not actually 9 and 7 because he didn't play in the last game.
00:24:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:24:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh. Oh, yes. Yes.
00:24:58
Chris
But you mentioned our injuries.
00:24:59
Iain
but yeah
00:25:00
Chris
So Anu signing essentially has been brought in to start, you know, he's like 26, 27, I think he's, you know, he's a very experienced place for Ivory Coast national team.
00:25:04
Iain
yeah
00:25:09
Chris
He's actually born in Ivory Coast. so like he, there's no bones about it. I mean, the one game we had eight Nori, who's not a centre back playing at centre back. He's a left wing back or arguably our left winger.
00:25:19
Chris
you know, so he has to start. There is, you're some mascara's out. Dawson's doubtful and has been carrying injuries all season. There is a reason Doc has moved into the back three.
00:25:30
Chris
So this new signing is going straight in the fire. That's, that's pretty much it.
00:25:33
Iain
yeah 8 Nori was a player I forgot, but I quite like him. He's very good going forward if he's given the space, isn't he?
00:25:40
Chris
Yeah, he loves to go wondering, which is the problem at the back sometimes.
00:25:41
Nathan
Yeah.
00:25:43
Iain
Well, yes, you're a glad you're a glass half empty man, aren't you Chris?
00:25:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
you mentioned the
00:25:49
Chris
we've been through We've been through it this season.
00:25:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's all right, so am I.
00:25:51
Chris
I'm sorry. we've but We've been through it. You just look at our position, you know.
00:25:55
Iain
I get it, I get it.
00:25:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. You mentioned Alexander Izak a little bit earlier. Are there any other players that you are slightly worried about going into the game who you think might be able to control and dominate the game?
00:26:07
Nathan
My big ones actually Bruno Guimares I think that it's going to be really interesting to see how he how he matches up against Andre and Jal Gomez because you guys tend to play a three in midfield if I'm I'm not wrong.
00:26:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that's correct.
00:26:20
Nathan
So with our two and it's very clear and Davido Pereira that he wants those two CDMs just sat there protecting the back three. It'll be really interesting to see where your midfield decide to pick up space and I can see it being a bit cagey at first and both teams trying to feel each other out, but Gimares, Jal Gomez, Joel Linton and Andre, they know each other so well.
00:26:45
Nathan
So there's going to be a, it'll be an interesting
00:26:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.

Midfield Battles and Match Predictions

00:26:48
Nathan
battle.
00:26:48
Nathan
And I think that's where the game ultimately probably will be decided who can get the ball to their most creative players.
00:26:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely spot on. And that's our thoughts on the Danger Men for the two sides. And in part three, we'll get into our final predictions for the game. But for now, we've got another advert from the Global Sports Podcast Network.

And I will say myself, that was a brilliant, brilliant advert, Michael. Thank you very much. You're brilliant, you're gorgeous, the lot. And welcome back to the daily Newcastle and Wolves crossover. That was a lot of meat open, so we're going to quickly move to our predictions. We'll start on the wolves side with Chris, then we'll move to Ian, then to Nathan, and I will finish this off.

Upcoming Challenges for Wolves

00:27:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Chris, start us off. What are the expectations of wolves fans going into the game and how can you see it panning out?
00:27:59
Chris
And I think I kind of touched on it a little bit already. This is a really tough run we're going into for us because we've got, I can't remember the order, but in the space of a few short games, we've got you guys, Arsenal, Liverpool, like it's all back to back. So we need whatever we can get, which is why I said I'll be grateful for.
00:28:15
Chris
I see goals, like you mentioned, I think there's going to be goals in this either way. We're always capable of scoring. like We pretty much always manage to score no matter the outcome. so and But given that we've got a new defender, some new combinations at the back, and we're still trying to shore up shot from set pieces, I'll take a 1-1 to be honest with you.
00:28:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
and what interest interesting so what are you thinking Ian are we we know Newcastle fans are confident going at the game but is there potentially a worry of overconfidence and how do you see the game going yeah
00:28:52
Iain
I don't think we're, I don't think it's a lot that are ready to be overconfident yet because we've lived through the first part of the season. You know, we turned overconfident to play West Ham and got turned over. I do think there'll be goals. I think Wolves will score. but I'm going to go with my old favorite, the old faithful, the score that I back every week, except I haven't backed the last three times that we've won this score.
00:29:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we expected a bit more but it wasn't Yeah, and then when they scored Kraken 3-1 Nathan do you agree with Chris's thought for a 1-1 or at least a draw or are you leaning maybe a different way?
00:29:21
Iain
I'm going to go for 3-1. I didn't do 3-1 against Bromley. Come on. I was on about seven. I was on six six or seven nil or something on that one, but what could he do?
00:29:32
Iain
3-1 for me.
00:29:35
Iain
Yeah, that was a shot. That was a shot.
00:29:45
Nathan
I'm going to try and be the the really optimistic one. Usually Chris is carrying that bat on, but I'm going to go for a 2-1 away win for the Wolves.
00:29:52
Nathan
I can just i can see us scoring and I can't see us not conceding.
00:29:55
Chris
Get in there.
00:29:57
Nathan
So, yeah, hoping that new lad has a good run out at the back and can can keep Isaac quiet-ish.
00:30:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, absolutely. I think it's, to be honest, it's going to be very interesting to see how he plays Ian.
00:30:11
Iain
Matt Doherty, you'll be at least 10 to 1 to score at any time. You heard it here first, right?
00:30:18
Nathan
Get to the book, you.
00:30:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Matt Dougherty, Matt Dougherty gonna be in my nightmares once again and...
00:30:23
Chris
Do you want to join our podcasting and so you can just come and watch lyrical about doc anytime you want? Cause that'd be, that'd be great.
00:30:28
Iain
I'm more than happy.
00:30:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
...adds
00:30:30
Chris
that
00:30:30
Iain
I'm more than happy. it's it's part of my event Talking about him is part of my aversion therapy, because I still haven't got over to taking my little lad.
00:30:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
off his arse.
00:30:37
Chris
i
00:30:40
Iain
He was only seven or eight. His first Newcastle match as a map docket, he's scoring in the bloody injury time.
00:30:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Put a thing.
00:30:48
Iain
He was in tears. I was in tears. He was devastated. What can you do?
00:30:52
Chris
Doc, you've got 11.
00:30:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, hopefully there's not a repeat of that.
00:30:55
Iain
No.
00:30:55
Chris
I'll take it. I'll take it. I'm sorry, Ian, but if you end up in tears again, because Doc scores a late, you know, far post winner or something, I'm going to be on cloud nine.
00:31:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I get why and to be honest.
00:31:06
Iain
but Wait for where now Michael's prediction. It's probably going to be a heavier defeat than 2-1 because he's always, he's another glass half empty man.
00:31:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:31:15
Iain
Aren't you Michael?
00:31:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well I was actually going to surprise all of you.

Final Predictions from Hosts

00:31:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
am more nervous for this game than I was for Man United and Spurs but I did predict us to win against them quite comfortably. I expected more of Man United and probably less of Tottenham because they gave us a great game but Wolves have never kept a clean sheet in the Premier League.
00:31:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
at against Newcastle in the Premier League should I say. You did in the Championship but not in the Premier League. In the last three games we've won by a combined score line of six to one but Wolves are very much improving and I think it'll be a
00:31:49
Chris
yes Referees have helped. So I all remember that goalie pulling down Jimenez. so
00:31:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've all had winches, we didn't complain, we'll remember long stuff being pulled down as well. No one talks about that one though. And I think, to be honest, I think it'll be one of those where it'll be really tight for a large portion of the game. But I do think that if, I do think that we'll end up running away with it and I do think it'll be a 4-1. I do think that Wolves will, it'll probably be 2-1 at half time.
00:32:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we'll get the third while Wolves are having the better of the game. do think Wolves will have the better of the game through the middle I do think we'll struggle to an extent but I think once we get in the ascendancy there's very few teams that can stop us at the minute.
00:32:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
But whatever happens, the trajectory for both clubs is back on the up and that's ultimately reason enough to be positive ah ah ahead of Wednesday's game. Which of us will be smiling at the end? Well, we've mentioned tears, but well, hopefully there's no tears for many of us and it's just a really, really good game. But if there is, what will be will be. And for now, that's goodbye from us.
