00:02:54
Speaker
Yes, in this quarter, um she is on the quarter system. So which is, I think, I think ah that's why she's going back to school so much later than everybody else. So she has a different schedule than other colleges.
00:03:07
Speaker
Got it. Okay, so we're playing Austin Peay. We are playing Austin P. Apparently. ah Yeah. um Let's hit the rundown. Let's hit the matchup.

00:04:25
Speaker
That's P-E-A-Y-V-S-U-G-A. Um, and not a lot of history between these two, only one matchup in the past. Uh, that was back in 2018. The dogs won 45 to nothing.
00:04:38
Speaker
Um, so that was 2018. So like sophomore Jake front year, uh, back then. um Looks like another nice day. I'll say it looks like it'll be hot again, though.
00:04:49
Speaker
um So seeing like 91 in the afternoon what I'm seeing. um And then like chance of rain. So hopefully the rain holds off or maybe it'll cool everything off.
00:05:00
Speaker
I don't know. um But yeah, so drink your water. It's going to be warm. Drink your water accordingly. ah They do have water stations in the stadium, by the way. I i know I took advantage of those. like if you bring in a bottle of water, you can refill it.
00:05:13
Speaker
ah We were doing that last game. um So just ah make sure to do that. Hydrate, hydrate. It's going to be hot. Yeah, i'm definitely going to have to do that one for this one. um and i and you And you and Coach Trill are not going to be there for breezeway conversations.

Austin Peay Trivia and Traditions

00:07:01
Speaker
ah Let's just go to some fun facts and know your foe type stuff since we don't play these guys very often and we weren't around the last time we played them.
00:07:08
Speaker
True. Podcast. My God of Podcast did not yet exist back in 20. So first time we've played them since we've been a podcast. OK. OK. um All right, Jim, are you familiar with the monkeys?
00:07:20
Speaker
What do you think the monkeys have to do with Austin Peay? Like with the band, the monkeys, the band of the monkeys. Yes. Wow. Oh, I'm going to come. I'm going to come right off the top. room I have no idea where this is going, man. I have no idea.
00:07:36
Speaker
Uh, okay. So the monkeys have a song called the last train to Clarksville. Okay. Clarksville is where Austin P is located. That is the connection. That is the connection to the monkeys that are current foe, uh, has, uh, Austin P is actually the namesake of the university is, uh, governor Austin P. Um, he was instrumental in, um, kind of establishing,
00:08:02
Speaker
um establishing the school um to kind of get um to kind of get the education reforms and things like that going. um But yeah, it was originally founded in 1927 as Austin Peay Normal School.
00:08:18
Speaker
And it was a training teacher training kind of academy. um But then it it went to a four-year college in 1943 and became a full university in 1967.
00:08:30
Speaker
fairly new-ish university by, you know, modern day standards. um Yeah. So outsiders often mispronounce P as P. I believe that it is, i think that we're when we say Austin P, it's actually supposed to be Austin austin Pay.
00:08:52
Speaker
um But anyway, um They have a ah colloquial chant that the students have kind of affectionately termed, let's go pee.
00:09:05
Speaker
Nice. ah wait this is work I need to update the soundboard. We need like a boom, boom, boom for that one.
00:09:15
Speaker
Yes. um Okay, so their mascot is the governor, and it is a dapper, mustached character that's supposed to represent Austin Peay himself.
00:09:26
Speaker
um And they have a couple of other mascots that are kind of modeled after. It's what's one of the few college mascots that are modeled after a politician.

Military Influence and Football Program

00:09:35
Speaker
um But yeah, it's supposed to resemble the the namesake founder.
00:09:38
Speaker
um So that's kind of cool. um I guess that for a while there, like the women's teams were called the lady govs because it was confusing because the governor term is like a, has no gender distinction. Yeah.
00:09:52
Speaker
um But they are now they are now known as the governors. So for a while, they the women's teams were known as lady govs, but they are now known as the governors. know, because we say lady dogs, but dogs are both male and female. so Right, right. interesting Okay, okay. It is interesting.
00:10:10
Speaker
um Let's see here. they have a They have a Gov spirit rock, which I guess that's like a rock that they have on campus that they kind of um basically paint over promos, memes, slogans.
00:10:22
Speaker
like It's just like a rock that the kids paint over. Let's see here. The fan student section is called the Red Menace. um And apparently they're known for their heckling um and shouting jokes that go viral on social media.
00:10:37
Speaker
Let's see, your Clarksville itself, the city where the university is located, is formerly known as the gateway to the New South. um So it's got a little bit of the historic Southern culture and the growing international presence that they have there.
00:10:54
Speaker
um I believe that there's a semiconductor plant that's that's there as well, which granted the university a ah pretty decent chunk of of money there.
00:11:06
Speaker
um It is a very militaristic campus. So there's a Fort Campbell, which is nearby. And according to my research, about a third of the student population is actually affiliated with the military.
00:11:23
Speaker
So they've got a little bit of a kind of cadet nature there. Let's see here. Football team hasn't been around for a very long time. Again, by modern standards, um it was started in 1930, but was discontinued due to World War Two, but did make a comeback um in 1946 with the players being recruited from said Fort Campbell.
00:11:47
Speaker
Yeah. Let's see here. Some other things. um They have a clock. They have ah they have a tower ah tower bell mystery. um ah They have a building that's on their campus that has a clock tower that chimes throughout the campus.
00:12:04
Speaker
um But the rumor has it that if the bell rings while you're taking an exam, it's good luck for passing. That's their one of their little campus tidbits. um There's also a haunted hall.
00:12:17
Speaker
called Harnd Hall on the university's campus. um They have a ghost of Harnd Hall. So there's just one of those nightly security staff kind of have reported flickering lights and strange sounds in the hallways. And so um that is the that is the situation that they have with the the ghost of Harnd Hall.
00:12:39
Speaker
just Interesting. ah hello Did you ever experience the ghost at a fraternity Sorry. No. allegedly there's a ghost at our fraternity house i have i lived there for three years and never once had any any run-ins okay i had one i had one weird thing we'll just talk about that sometime oh nice okay uh maybe halloween halloween episode halloween episode oh halloween episode i like it let's see here what else we got
00:13:08
Speaker
and I'm just looking through my notes here. Nothing nothing's sticking out. um Yeah, there's that. Let's see here. Let's go to some some notable alumni. fairly pedestrian ah fairly fairly Fairly pedestrian list of famous alumni. I don't know that but most people are going to know these people.
00:13:30
Speaker
um I'm trying to look at some of the ones here to just see if there's anybody that might recognize some folks here. Let's see. Some baseball players, um some some NBA players.
00:13:44
Speaker
Yeah, I just don't know that there's anybody anybody of of note here. i did come across one name on the on the notable Austin Peay list there.
00:13:56
Speaker
Mm-hmm. um a guy that went to austin p um oh uh i actually forgot there there's one person that i think that some people will know um it is what was his name bob bob harper um does that name ring a bell jim it does not it does not for me does your watch the biggest loser I mean, like I've seen it, like I know what it is and I like seen it, but I didn't like watch like episode to episode.
00:14:27
Speaker
Yeah, no, I mean, we watched it a little bit just because it was always kind of amazing to see like people lose like double their body of weight kind of thing. um It's actually interesting because there recently was a ah documentary that just came out that and talked about how abusive he was um that show.
00:14:46
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. yeah anyway bob harper is the male that like yells at everybody on the on the show and and there is a there is a documentary that talks about the abuse that he kind of laid out on people okay um so he was kind of yeah like ben stiller in that movie heavyweights he's kind of like ben stiller i don't know that he was formerly fat or anything like that yeah Or big boned or whatever.
00:15:10
Speaker
Yeah. um But yeah. Let's see here.

Notable Alumni from Austin Peay

00:15:15
Speaker
I'm trying to look at some other other folks here that people might may or may not know. But there is one person that stuck out like a sore thumb that had not ah not graduated but did go to this school for a while.
00:15:30
Speaker
And he actually is a person that I'm looking after reading. i had to go back and look and double check that if it was him or not. And it is. um Are you familiar with the song?
00:15:41
Speaker
um You never call me by my name. Yes. Yeah. David. and this Yeah. Yeah. Wait, no, hold on. Yeah. Well, there might be a different, that's a lyric. and Yeah, sure. Yes. Yes. David Allen call.
00:15:55
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. I had, I like doubted myself for a second. Okay. I was like, wait a second. Did you just confuse me? um Well, I did, but you were so right.
00:16:06
Speaker
he Yes. um So in that lyric, he so he says, you don't you don't have to call me Charlie Pride. Charlie Pride is a country singer, ah and he is one of the first African-American country singers.
00:16:23
Speaker
Hmm. He's also had a career as a Negro League baseball player back in the day. um But he made a namesake for himself as a country singer and was one of the first African-American country superstars.
00:16:37
Speaker
um I'm not really sure what the reference was to him in that. I didn't really go down that rabbit hole. But I saw Charlie Bride, and he was a person that went to Austin Peay but did not finish.
00:16:49
Speaker
Okay. So I thought that that was interesting. Yeah, it is. It's one of those things that like, i guess, ah unless you're just like a super, cause I, I'm not really familiar with his music. Maybe I would be if I heard some of the songs, but, um, overall, uh, you, you hear a famous song with a line like that, that name drops someone.
00:17:10
Speaker
Yeah. And you're like, you don't think twice, you don't think twice about it. But then I saw it come up in this as, as a result of recording this episode. And i'm like, Oh, okay. Now I know.
00:17:21
Speaker
Nice. But yeah, anyway, that's ah that is the fun facts that I had. OK. But yeah, that's that's what we got.
00:17:31
Speaker
Nice. Nice. Those are fun like this. Like this. um I did. i I double checked from what I can see. It is P like it is Austin P. I actually saw someone say like um that. They it's pronounced like the letter P. So hopefully that's accurate.
00:17:48
Speaker
um Okay. You want to hit Hastie's Hargaret History? Yes. Let's go for it.
00:18:11
Speaker
When you move your mouse, you forget to take turn this. Sorry.
00:18:15
Speaker
Um, right. Hastie's Harvard history. Before we get into this reminder, uh, Jason hasty always has um, an exhibit going on

Georgia's Sports Facilities History

00:18:25
Speaker
in the fall. And this fall's exhibit, uh, is around UG swimming and diving and around, ah coach Jack Bowerly. So if you're in town for a game, um, and you're in in town early, um like you can go on, on every Friday, um,
00:18:40
Speaker
You can go at any time that it's open. It's open to weekdays, but every Friday, Jason like gives a free tour tour and goes through the exhibit. So be sure to go check that out if you are in or around Athens um on a Friday before game day.
00:18:54
Speaker
All right. so um Do you want me to do this? We didn't. see ah you you yeah I read it last time. You can read it this time. Okay. Okay. So this is written from, from the perspective of one Jason Hastie this Saturday, as I walked across campus to Sanford stadium, I passed a student on Hurdy field telling several of his friends that this was where Georgia played his first ever football game against, against Harvard in like the it.
00:19:20
Speaker
he's it ah Points for trying, definitely, but it got me thinking about how most fans know something about Georgia playing football on Hurdy Field. Few are aware that there was once another entire stadium on campus.
00:19:33
Speaker
Georgia students began playing rudimentary forms of football, at least in the late 1880s, but intercollegiate competition didn't begin until January 30th, 1892. Sorry, yeah January 30th, 1892, when Mercer College played the Georgia squad in what was then known as the athletic field.
00:19:52
Speaker
Athletic field was bounded on one side by Lumpkin Street, on the other side by New College and the Chapel, and with Moore College, providing the northern the northern boundary of the expanse.
00:20:03
Speaker
Because Gilbert Hall, Candler Hall, and Caldwell Hall had not yet been built, what is now Hurdy Field encompassed a larger area than the current space. This area in the late 19th century was rough and strewn with rocks, a far cry from the beautifully manicured lawn it is today.
00:20:19
Speaker
This area wasn't simply a home for the football team. It served as a baseball diamond, a space for track and field competitions, a parade ground for the university's Corps of Cadets, a precursor to modern ROTC programs, a band practice squad, home of the university's annual field day, and a place where students could blow off steam after class.
00:20:38
Speaker
Georgia played its home games on what quickly became known as Hurtiefield through the end of the 1910 season. By that time, the quaint home of our football and baseball teams was proving inadequate for both the teams and the fans.
00:20:50
Speaker
Stedman Sanford, a professor of English literature who was acting as the faculty advisor to the athletics program, led a drive to construct a proper home for Georgia's athletics teams. The venue, known as Sanford Field, abutted Lumpkin Street.
00:21:03
Speaker
It opened in early 1911 and featured a wooden grandstand and seating for around 5,000 spectators. The university also used it for most of the other purposes that Hurdy Field was used for, and it was a popular venue for pushball, which was a craze in the that featured large teams of students pushing a giant rubber ball and each other through a goal.
00:21:23
Speaker
i I had never heard of pushball. I just learned about that. Okay. Okay. but yeah you would have what is what oh there's there's the picture of it if you're on the youtube you can actually see a picture of it holy cow what the heck it looks like some kind of like joke like is that real did jason send his real stuff i know yeah seriously i know it is yeah seriously you know what it looks like it looks like uh you know those those giant inflatable balls that you get in the middle of and like roll around like it looks like it looks like one of those except like there's nobody inside of it It does look like that. ah
00:21:56
Speaker
Sanford Field occupied the area now used as the parking lot for the Tate Center and the Tate Center's mid-2000s expansion. Though Sanford Field was adequate for its time, by the mid-1920s, it was too small to accommodate growing crowds of football fans, leading Georgia to play many important games away from Athens.
00:22:14
Speaker
In 1927, the undefeated Dream and Wonder team ah played Tech in Atlanta because Sanford Field was too small for the crowds wanting to see this contest between the two best teams in the South, if not in the nation.
00:22:26
Speaker
Tech has been accused of watering down their field to slow Georgia's potent rushing attack, and the Dream and Wonder Bulldogs lost the chance to go to the Rose Bowl and win a national championship. This galvanized Georgia's administration led by Stedman Sanford to build a modern stadium in Athens.
00:22:40
Speaker
Sanford Stadium would open on October 5th, 1929, when Georgia defeated mighty Yale 27th and up. Also reminder, that's why ah tech is around. What is forgotten today is that the 1929 season didn't open in Sanford Stadium.
00:22:54
Speaker
It opened with two warm-up games against Oglethorpe College and Furman on Old Sanford Field. The story of san Sanford Field doesn't end there. The field continued as the home of Georgia's baseball team until 1943.
00:23:06
Speaker
At that point, the U.S. s Navy, which had taken over most of UGA's campus to serve as a training facility for na naval aviators, tore down the grandstand and built a multi-purpose physical education building on the site.
00:23:18
Speaker
The building was notable for its large swimming pool, which was used to train aviators how to bail out of their airplanes over water. The Navy sold the building to the university for $1 after World War II.
00:23:28
Speaker
The university then named it Stegman Hall and used it as a pe PE building and a practice space for the Red Code Band. Stegman Hall was demolished in 1995 when the Ramsey Center opened. Huh, I was wondering why I didn't know where that was.
00:23:40
Speaker
um As an aside, university administration in the 1920s wanted all athletic facilities centered around Sanford Field and Sanford Stadium. And for a while, this was the case. The site of the current psychology slash journalism complex was the site of tennis courts and Woodruff Hall at the basketball facility.
00:23:57
Speaker
The current site of the Miller Learning Center was the university's track. Man, Jason, I actually didn't. I know he kind of opened with like a lot of people, a lot of fans don't know these things. Like I didn't know know these things. Yeah.
00:24:09
Speaker
Yeah, seriously. So that was great. That's why we do these things. That's right. That's right. Yeah. And if I don't know, I guess another plug for the YouTube when when we're reading these, we always have like the visuals that Jason has sent um to us kind of running as a slideshow. So these are great, especially the pushball.
00:24:28
Speaker
Never heard of Yeah, the pushball thing is kind of interesting. The other thing is kind of interesting, a Hunter, if you're listening to this, ah you'd you'd be interested in some of the uniform situation that I noticed on on one of Jason's pictures.
00:24:42
Speaker
There's a block Georgia baseball uniform that you can see, and you can get just a glimpse. I'm very curious if you could take further inspection on this gentleman's hat as to what's actually on that hat.
00:24:59
Speaker
um and It looks like it's probably a G, but I'm not really sure what it's, what it's fashioned there. um But that was kind of interesting to me. I was trying to go back through that.
00:25:09
Speaker
Oh, in the baseball. Yeah. I'll have to, we'll have to put glasses on it and zoom in. Yes. I can't really tell. Yeah. I can't tell either. When I, when I zoom in. Okay. Okay. Got it. We'll to get Jason to use like an actual. Enhance. Yeah. Enhance.
00:25:23
Speaker
Enhance. it's not It's not working like the movies. Use like an an actual magnifying glass on the phone. I know, right? Yeah. Yeah. That's actually another another good reason to go into Harvard history.
00:25:35
Speaker
For sure. For sure. You can actually take a look at these things live and in person. That's right. That's right. All right. Well, appreciate it, Jason, as always. Thank you so much. um This was a great one. I love it. Always learn. Always learn things ah from Hastie's Harvard history.
00:25:50
Speaker
Okay. So I do actually have some notes. What do you want? Sorry. No, you're okay. You're good? Notes. Yeah. there go Yeah. So I did have some, uh, some actual press conference notes from Kirby.
00:26:04
Speaker
Um, most notably he's got a lot of respect for Austin P. I, I love that. He still says that every press conference. Um, but seriously on the, on the injury front. Um, so he did say that Dale and Everett is still dealing with an ankle injury. So that's why we didn't see him out there against Marshall.
00:26:20
Speaker
Um, he said he was able to run and do some things. Um, on Monday should be able to crank it back up on Tuesday and do more. So we'll see there. um What's not great that I don't love, related to Juan Gaston and Ernest Green.
00:26:36
Speaker
He said, we are hopefully going to get both of those guys back this week, but only time will tell. So our first hopeful kiss of death of the season goes to freshman Juan Gaston and as well as Ernest Green.
00:26:50
Speaker
So I would not expect them to see out. I would not expect to see them out there this week based on that. Yeah. I mean, just watching Gaston and um just watching all the, any of those guys that are starters, like if anybody has any kind of niggling injuries or anything like that, like they're, they're definitely not going to be playing.
00:27:10
Speaker
Yeah. and Until absolutely necessary. Right. Right. I also really want to know if, because I said Gaston and you said Gaston, and this is where I'm double checking. I don't believe he is on the, yeah, he see, he's not on the Scott Howard pronunciation.
00:27:27
Speaker
So if anyone in butts, me is listening, please request Scott Howard to record one's last name. Thank you. Okay. Um, yeah, that was really it though. Um, from the press conference.
00:27:38
Speaker
Um, and then I didn't, I couldn't even find anything around like a press conference, um, for Austin Peay's coach, but, um, Jeff Ferris is his name. don't know if you've seen a picture of him, John, like he looks like he looks super young.
00:27:52
Speaker
Um, I mean, he's he's younger than we are, which I guess is not that odd these days. Like a sign that that you're getting old, that you're like, man, these coaches look young even.
00:28:04
Speaker
um But this is this is year two for him. um He was like the tight ends coach at UCLA ah before going to Austin Peay. And he was like co-offensive coordinator at Duke at one point.
00:28:18
Speaker
So played, I think, safety in college. um but seems to have been an offensive assistant for for quite some time. So that's what I could find on ah one Jeff Ferris, Austin B. head coach.
00:28:30
Speaker
is it ferris Is it Ferris Bueller's day off? Yeah. Spilled differently, but could be. Like I mentioned earlier, you know so they are they beat Middle Tennessee last week, and which is wild um because they are mean, they're FCS, or like we used to call that One double a um when they beat middle Tennessee last week, that was only their second ever win over an FBS team um in Austin Peay's history.
00:28:59
Speaker
um The only other time they did that was all the way back in 1987 when they beat Kansas state. ah So it was a big deal for them to, ah to get that win last week. Their head coach, their head coach kind of looks like he should be selling cut co don't know.
00:29:13
Speaker
He looks like a gentleman that's going to knock on your door and try to sell you some windows and knives. He goes, cut and go knives. They can cut through anything, though. They really can. you got their They can cut through rope. but i got I got a pair of scissors. can' come can make a corkscrew out of a penny for you.
00:29:33
Speaker
i mean Yeah, but but he has door-to-door salesman vibes. Okay, okay, okay, fair. Let's see. i don't yeah ah like Some of the stats that we usually go over um don't have for them because they're FCS.
00:29:49
Speaker
I know their turnover margin is like ours, zero. They played it in a turnover-free game last week. Yeah. FYI. All right. Let's talk through what we're looking for when the Georgia offense is on the field.
00:30:05
Speaker
um And we've actually got a couple of listener questions that were like strictly about the offense. um But I don't know, John, if if there's anything that you you had before we go. Yeah, I mean, i think that I'm just going to be looking for yards, yards not being generated by Gunnar Stockton running the ball all the time because I just don't think that's going to be sustainable in this day and age.
00:30:27
Speaker
um I'd like to keep the keep the offensive line healthy. mean, keep everybody healthy, really. Everybody just in and... and get in get out and get a win.
00:30:40
Speaker
Um, I imagine that Kirby's not going to give two, two about covering. um there's not even a line for this game. So, um, yeah, I don't, I don't know.
00:30:52
Speaker
I like to see, i like to see us assert our dominance early and then get everybody and then pull, pull the starters and get everybody in so that by the end of the game, walk-ons have more snaps than our starters.
00:31:03
Speaker
Yes. Yes. I would like to see Gunnar throwing the ball downfield a little bit more. um We've seen what he can do, you know, lateral and short to medium range, but I'd like to see us try to stress their, their defense a little bit more and some live reps, live, live practice reps downfield.
00:31:24
Speaker
Cause I think that that's going to be something that we're going to need to showcase that he can do at some point. Otherwise, Teams are just going to figure that out and start pinning their ears back and basically just force Gunnar Stockton to beat you passing the ball downfield.
00:31:39
Speaker
Yeah. So you you gave ah an affirmative yes ah answer to Andrew Caraway's question. So his question was, we saw Eugene make a point to run the ball Saturday. Do we see them make a point to give donener Gunner ah confidence throwing the ball downfield this week?
00:31:54
Speaker
so And I'm with you. I'm with you. I think the answer to that is yes as well. Yeah. I like to see that for sure. I'd also like to see us not have to get into multiple fourth downs to convert.
00:32:06
Speaker
Right? Yeah. Yeah. Agreed. ah Agreed. I'm with you there. um Another one ah that came in was from Matthew Key. um Well, he said, great seeing you guys this past weekend.
00:32:18
Speaker
Agreed. they agree The Slim Koozie Great Marketing. Hey, you can be like Matt and you can ho over head over to mygotapodcast.com slash store and pick up a Slim Koozie or a Standard Koozie, whatever you like.
00:32:30
Speaker
um He said, one, what does our offensive line need to do to get back to the Joe Moore level? probably hire Sam Pittman. yeah I'm just saying. I'm just saying, Jim. Okay.
00:32:45
Speaker
Any other ideas, John? i mean, we could we could get our donors to donate more money so that they can buy more offensive linemen, I guess. I don't know. like if that's Because we lost that guy We lost that off. What was it? Cantwell or whatever his name is down in Miami. Right.
00:33:04
Speaker
Right, right. Yeah, yeah. um unfortunately um fun Unfortunately, along the ah offensive and defensive line, it's 100% Jimmy's and Joe's. So a I think Sam Pittman definitely is a big factor in that success, but also Sam Pittman just so happened to pull in like i mean more five stars along the offensive line than I've ever seen at the University of Georgia. Yeah.
00:33:28
Speaker
Right. Right. um I would say um if we can get continuity, that would be a step in the right direction. i think last year there was a lot of, you know, some due to health, right?
00:33:41
Speaker
um So health and then just continuity, like finding the best five and being able to kind of like stick with that best five. And then you've got like kind of a utility guy that you can rotate in. So that would be my only thing there.
00:33:53
Speaker
um And then will Dwight Phillips get more carries this week? I'm not sure that we'll get more. um

Georgia's Team Analysis

00:34:00
Speaker
and Maybe. We got five carries last week. So I could i could see Peanut getting a few more carries.
00:34:04
Speaker
It's possible. I definitely would like to figure out a way figure out some more ways to get Peanut in space. Because like when watched the review um the of the last of Marshall,
00:34:18
Speaker
um you know when he hit the When he hit the hole, he hit it quickly. and He was able to get up to speed quickly. I think Buddy has a legit 4-2-40. um and I think that that speed is something that we we need to figure out how to exploit his speed um anywhere on the field.
00:34:38
Speaker
and I'm not 100% sold on whether or not that's going to be between the tackles. Yeah. you know Maybe James Cook this sucker around, get some wheel routes going with Peanut. I don't know.
00:34:50
Speaker
yeah But we need to figure out some ways to leverage that 4-2 speed on the field at the same time as some of our other speedier receivers like Zach Wright Branch.
00:35:01
Speaker
Yeah. um And then lastly, was his his last one was, does Barber and Elias Williams get more touches to get them ready? um I think in a game like this, yes. yeah Yeah, I mean, I'd like to see Elias Williams definitely involved more.
00:35:17
Speaker
um That gentleman is a large human that makes other large humans look small. Yeah. Yeah. Agreed. Agreed. I think my, um my only other thing I'll add on the offense, i agree with you would like to see someone not named Gunnar Stockton be the leading rusher in a game like, especially in a game like this.
00:35:37
Speaker
um And I'd like to see, I'm kind of hoping Nate goes off like early and it breaks off a long one. um And then he can kind of take some rest, but I'd like, I'd like to see him.
00:35:48
Speaker
don't know. I just see him take one to the house. that be, that'd be sweet. That would be nice. Yeah. I wouldn't mind seeing a punt return from Zachary Branch too. That would be another one. Yeah, for sure. I feel like that's, that feels like it's into the special teams. That's okay. I would say i feel like that is a, that's coming.
00:36:05
Speaker
Um, here, let's do, let's do the defense. Um, Actually, sorry. One thing I forgot to mention with George on offense, just a couple of guys to watch out for on Austin Peay. So their sack leader, his name is TJ Cox.
00:36:22
Speaker
um He's a defensive lineman. He had one and a half sacks and two total tackles against Middle Tennessee State. And then their leading tackler is actually a defensive back. um And his name is Ellis Ellis.
00:36:35
Speaker
I just had to call that out. So Ellis Ellis Jr., as a redshirt junior defensive back. So be on the lookout for him. All right. Sorry. I had to point out that one guy had the same person's last name. Um, okay. So when Austin P has the ball, um, so let's see their quarterback is Chris Parson.
00:36:54
Speaker
Um, he was 11 of 20 for 142 yards and two touchdowns with a one 47.6 QB rating against middle Tennessee state. Um, they're leading rusher.
00:37:05
Speaker
looks like they didn't really run a ton. So, um, Cortland Simmons, running back. He was a leading rusher, 10 carries, 35 yards and a touchdown. Their quarterback, Chris Parson was the second leading rusher, 11 carries for 34 yards.
00:37:19
Speaker
um And then their leading receivers yardage wise were Shamark Kirk, ah three catches, 69 yards. And then Nate Garnett Jr. ah Two catches for 50 yards.
00:37:31
Speaker
Those are receivers. So just a few folks on the, for the governors. One thing i didn't expect is their quarterback mobile Jim. I mean, with 11 rushes, and would say you have to respect the risk.
00:37:43
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. I did not um finish my Austin Peay film review that I had planned to do, so I'm going off stats from that. um Cool. Don't let that happen again, Jim.
00:37:56
Speaker
Look, I mean, yeah, if we can do anything like on defense this week, like we did last week, like, that'd be golden. I'm good with that. Hopefully, just keep doing what you're doing.
00:38:07
Speaker
Be good to go. And remember, we haven't even seen Daly Neverett yet, so. It's true. I do hope he can go this week. i'd like to i get him some game reps before the Tennessee game.
00:38:20
Speaker
Yeah, because just get some reps so that we can get up to speed you know like like i said this is a great this is a great opportunity for people to get get right quickly and then get out quickly yeah for sure for sure um and let's hit the special teams uh i know you said you want to see a zachariah branch punt return for a touchdown agreed yes i think the question is uh will we or won't we see brett thorson um Actually, that was, i did see that in the press conference, by the way. It sounds like that's like straight up, like being cleared medically kind of thing.
00:38:53
Speaker
Um, I think in general, it has to do with like, you know, you hope he never has to take make a tackle, but just in case he does that kind of thing. So he basically, Thorson has not been cleared by the medical staff yet. So we'll see there.
00:39:05
Speaker
Um, But like we saw last week, team is in good hands with Drew. On the Austin Peay side, their kicker is Carson Smith. He was two for two against Middle Tennessee State. And their punter is Gavin Myers.
00:39:19
Speaker
he He had five punts for 181 yards, only a 36.2 yard. um So we'll see. We'll see. I don't i feel like that gets us in good Zachariah Branch return capability area.
00:39:32
Speaker
We'll see you there. um Their punt returner, though, did have two punts two puns returned for 62 yards. So he averaged 31-yard turn. I think he had a long turn. So be on the watch out for that.
00:39:45
Speaker
Got it. All right. That's what I had on special teams. um oh oh Actually, I forgot one thing. Gavin Myers, their punter, is not. sir justify They do not take it seriously, huh? Yeah. no No. Zero Australian punters for the governor's.
00:40:00
Speaker
Okay. um Yeah, like we said, FCS opponent, like it's it was kind of hard to pull stats for them. I had to like manually pull so like these player stats because ah the things that we usually run are all based on like the FPS, so...
00:40:14
Speaker
All right. Well, before we head into the rest of the listener questions, I know we hit a few earlier, but um just want to remind everyone about Working Web Media. um So they are our primary sponsor. We work with them.
00:40:27
Speaker
um They work with us on our website. um So you can check out some of their work. Head over to mygotapodcast.com to see. uh, what they helped us build there. Um, we've got our store there hosting all of our, all of our merch. We mentioned, you know, Matt Key's got the koozie. You got to go check those out.
00:40:44
Speaker
Um, so we've got koozies, we got a hat, so we got t-shirts. Um, so you can go check all that out and they helped us get all that set up. Um, but they work with you know small businesses all around Georgia and beyond. So if you've got a small business, maybe you need some help with your website or just your online presence, head over to workingwebmedia.com slash dogs, and then they will know that we sent you their way.
00:41:05
Speaker
right, let's hit the rest of the listener questions. And as always, how about we kick it off with the building bonus TMTMTM from bet building. Number one, what was the most memorable cupcake game in the Kirby era?
00:41:20
Speaker
And he said that could be good or bad. Most mem. Yeah. ah Oh, I know. TCU national championship game.
00:41:31
Speaker
We'll play it. Final answer.
00:41:35
Speaker
Okay. Yeah, that was a better answer. I'll go the opposite in the spectrum. I'll go, ah I guess, bad, whatever we won. But the Nichols game, that's what sticks out to me. It was like, what, it's Kirby's second game, I think, back in 2016.
00:41:50
Speaker
And we we hung on to beat Nichols ah late. I think we wore black jerseys, and like if I'm not mistaken. I could be wrong. Remember, I was not at that game. I watched that on TV, so...
00:42:01
Speaker
Don't recall. We beat him like 16 to 13 or something. It was some crazy. Go ahead. I like your answer better. We'll go with yours. You were correct. We'll stick with mine. um And then second, what effects, if any, will the nine-game SEC schedule have on these FCS schools?
00:42:17
Speaker
Will they have fewer paid games? I mean, feel like it kind of has to, I would think. um It's going to do one of two things. I mean, because I feel it's going to cut into... Like the ninth SEC game is going to cut into something like that. ask they That game has to come from somewhere. And so you think about like our schedule, um it's either going to be the the big games, right? Like no more like Clemson or Ohio State, like those kind of games.
00:42:43
Speaker
um Or it could be an FCS game like this, or it you know it could just be no more like the Marshalls and the Charlottes. So It'll be interesting, though, because these FCS schools like really depend on games like this for funding and for money to be able to fund their programs.
00:42:59
Speaker
So I don't know. I'm not sure. I actually tend to feel like ah i kind of feel like there's a better chance that the ninth SEC game takes away a ah power conference opponent as opposed to one of these.
00:43:12
Speaker
Call me crazy. I, I'm going to go the opposite direction on it. I actually think that games like these are going to be going away. Okay. Yeah, they could be. My logic is just, um, right now the playoff committee hasn't shown that like, like losses hurt more than a loss hurts more than a big one helps, I guess it might.
00:43:30
Speaker
So. If we're adding SEC games, it just means that the, um I don't know, if we're adding SEC games, I just feel like that there will be less games for schools like this to to be able to be a part of. Does that make sense?
00:43:47
Speaker
Yeah, that's true. That's true. So like less inventory. There's inventory. is that meanory Yeah. Yeah. That makes sense. That makes sense. I hear you. Okay. someone Someone's going to be left without a chair at the musical chairs.
00:43:59
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. and and that And that will add up over time. And so eventually I feel like that these kind of games, like the Austin Peas of the world, probably won't get scheduled you know you be left with something like a Marshall or um middle Tennessee state something along those lines um more so than Austin Peay right right yeah and frankly I think that those kinds of things are probably going to be the result of why some schools like Austin Peay will probably like retract their their programs yeah yeah yeah that's
00:44:33
Speaker
Because they can't afford to operate them because they're not getting the paydays because this is probably going to fund their operation for the entire year. All right, let's go to all school.
00:44:45
Speaker
um How do we feel about the retooled off offensive line and the retooled defensive line? The results didn't seem to reveal any obvious flaws, but the level of opponent didn't erase all doubts.
00:44:55
Speaker
I guess I would have a similar view to 2017 game. One, it's a good start, not conclusive. I mean, I think that's... probably fair um i liked what i saw about the offensive line like generally speaking i want to see more the run game though i want to see wider rushing lanes so that's what i'll be that's what i'll be looking thought defensive line looked really good though i don't know mean the defense definitely looks good um it's just one of those things where just want to see that yep yeah i mean yeah it's gonna take it's gonna take another game after before we know whole lot to be honest yeah
00:45:28
Speaker
Yeah, I think that we just need we just need a little bit more time to see everybody gel together with the the live live reps kind of thing. Yeah. But at the same time, like, Stacey and I are still not talking about As was noted earlier. ass was um but Okay, next up, Evan Grimes. Fear of the G on Twitter.
00:45:50
Speaker
Need to know what you guys felt when Zachariah took that check down for a touchdown. That was sweet, man. um it was It was sweet. it's you know we haven't We haven't had a guy like that, I don't think, for ah bit. I mean, you had Brock, obviously very different.
00:46:06
Speaker
you know He made that kind of impact, but obviously a different kind of player. lad, but I don't know. Like for the playmaking ability um in the open field, you know, couple that with like the punt returns and everything.
00:46:19
Speaker
ah I'm excited. Agreed. Let's see. Coach Hayes, Chris Hayes at Coach Hayes Huddle on Twitter. um Great seeing both of you guys this weekend. Interested in your thoughts on any non-starter that will make the biggest impact for playing time as a solid 1B type player who we aren't necessarily talking about right now.
00:46:37
Speaker
Solid contributor, either offensively or deep. Do you have a guy in mind? Because honestly, like I was, I kind of struggled with this because like some of the people, like since we've played a game and like so many guys got into the game, part of mine was like clarifying question, question defined, like not talking about, because like I would have gone peanut, but like it's peanut cheating considering he scored the first touchdown of the season.
00:46:58
Speaker
And we're talking about him now. Yeah. Right. But like preseason, I didn't really think that I would think of him as maybe being a one B running back. Like, I didn't think that would be him, but I feel like that could be the case now.
00:47:10
Speaker
ah Elias Williams would be my, one of, one of my guys. Okay. Um, nice Williams. Yeah. Peanuts cheating. Uh, I mean, could you say that Ryan Puglisi, Ryan Puglisi be cheating? Yeah.
00:47:25
Speaker
I mean, I don't personally, don't, I don't expect him to be a major impact player. Major contributor. Okay. Yeah. You hope not. Right. Knock on wood. Healthy. incu be he give me a scanner he's He's a solid one B. but Sure. Sure. Fair. Yes. He, ah he looked, he definitely looked, uh, he looked capable. He looked perfectly capable.
00:47:46
Speaker
I'll say that. Right. Exactly. All right. Cool. All right. Let's see. Next up. GATA. Saturday reminded me how much I hate the TV timeout guy.
00:47:57
Speaker
With all the reviews and all the dead time it's creating, should the college game look to change the rules for its reviews?

Impact of SEC Schedule on FCS Schools

00:48:04
Speaker
Maybe something like the NFL, Go Dawgs, and FCM. I think it's a fair question. I've seen people bring that up with, you just in college, like every time there's a close call, it gets reviewed and it takes up that time.
00:48:17
Speaker
Um, you they definitely less time spent on reviews in the NFL. Um, and just to clarify, like it's and well outside of the final two minutes of the half, I mean, it's, it's on the, it's on the coaches, right? So it's the coaches challenge system.
00:48:29
Speaker
So the coach decides when one of the coaches has to challenge to, to stop the play. And I feel like I'd be a open. I'd be open to that. Um, I feel like it's something the competition committees should discuss, honestly.
00:48:44
Speaker
Because it it it gets frustrating. I mean, it totally messes up the flow of the game at times ah with these with some of these reviews. And sometimes like it doesn't really, honestly. So, I don't my two cents. Agreed. Agreed. Yeah, like the fumbles that are not fumbles and...
00:48:58
Speaker
Right. It's like there's a fumble, but they recovered it anyways. Like it's going to be like a yard or something like doesn't matter. It's a game. of It's a game of inches. Jim, just playing devil's advocate.
00:49:09
Speaker
Fair enough. Fair enough. My my example of what's frustrating is like the SEC championship game ah two years ago when, you know, Bama had the drop.
00:49:21
Speaker
on fourth down that was missed. um And then like not too long after we had a deep ball to Arian Smith that he clearly caught and they stopped to review that because they wanted to make sure they didn't mess up. Like they messed up with the banner receiver that had dropped, like things like that.
00:49:35
Speaker
It's just like there was no easier. So I don't know. Right, right, right, right. All right. We can keep going. I'll see boss dog. ah There wasn't much you could tell with that vanilla game plan, but it seems like they got that fire to them.
00:49:48
Speaker
After Saturday, which two in-conference games are you most concerned for now? I think my two are Auburn and the Jort-wearing Freaks from down south. i I will say this. like the There are a lot of teams on our schedule that look pretty good this weekend, um this past weekend.
00:50:05
Speaker
I would include Auburn there. I would include Tennessee. I thought Tennessee looked better than i personally expected. Again, Syracuse. um My only thing is that I would say here is let's not forget the the yeah the big names that were on the schedule at the big beginning of the season just because they lost this weekend.
00:50:24
Speaker
A little bit more experience under their belts. So I would not forget the Bamas, the Texases. So I don't know. Yeah.
00:50:34
Speaker
Yeah. ah Yeah, it's hard to say. like you said, it's it's vanilla. and just yeah it It just seems like and's it's an extension of fall practice. It's it's an extension of fall camp. they're like but yeah You got guys that are still auditioning to basically be part of the team kind of thing.
00:50:53
Speaker
Right. Right. But from what you saw from around the rest of the SEC, who are the two in-conference games, I guess, the most leery?

Listener Questions and Game Predictions

00:51:01
Speaker
I mean, you got to put you got put Lagway on there for Florida for sure.
00:51:05
Speaker
um i would be concerned with them. I will always be concerned about a trip to Auburn. So I would say that those two games are for sure my my two my two concerns. Yeah.
00:51:19
Speaker
I'm not as concerned from a talent perspective with Auburn, but don't know, man. There's just Jordan hair is a really tough place to play. Yeah. Yeah. For Georgia. Right.
00:51:29
Speaker
Right. and And for Alabama.
00:51:33
Speaker
Fair enough. Fair enough. um All right. Next up, Kevin. um but Okay. I need you to use the like, ah I feel like I may have missed something. If dog poop can bestow, can bestow curses and remove them. What other magical properties does it have?
00:51:47
Speaker
What? I don't know. Kevin, you're going to you have to let us know what's going on here. I have nothing. Okay, we'll keep going. Kevin, we don't we're not sure. yeah i got I got nothing with that. I need and he's i need iit a and need a little help here.
00:52:06
Speaker
um He did say, Starbucks has begun begun advertising for PSL, private seat license, during college football games on ESPN. When is the corporate infiltration going to end? Great week, guys.
00:52:16
Speaker
ah I think it's yeah where the we are revenue sharing and paying players, so it's not... going to end. and We saw, can't remember. Yeah, I can't remember. it was yesterday, today. Like, there's going to be a a logo on the field at Alabama.
00:52:34
Speaker
Like, they had a new deal. So, like, that's coming, too. Like, just get ready. Like, you know, so I would say it's not going to... Not going to slow down. um It wouldn't surprise me to see them put a logo on the seat backs.
00:52:47
Speaker
Right. and It's got to be something that fits though. got be something that fits something red. Right. ah Let's see. ah Ryan Heinco with six punts for Drew Miller this weekend. If the booming onion is ready to go against Austin P and doesn't get to kick, does Gunnar Stockton hate punters from Australia?
00:53:04
Speaker
Yeah. Yes. Yeah. I mean, i think so. I think so. Although we we need we need to see how much um how much ah Brett gets to punt when he comes in the game to fully know.
00:53:18
Speaker
But I think the answer is ah still yes. Anyways. Yeah. I hope that he gets healthy and never punts again. Fair. here right, let's see. ah Will Garland, what individual performance from week one were you most impressed with?
00:53:32
Speaker
And what player are you hoping to see make the biggest step forward against Austin Peay? I mean, you got to be ah most most impressed with Zachariah Branch for sure. Yeah, I agree. um That it seems like the the obvious Yeah.
00:53:48
Speaker
yeah yeah I kind of mentioned my step forward earlier. like i want to see I'd like to see Nate Frazier. Had a big game. I saw that he didn't like, I think, how he played.
00:53:59
Speaker
um So I feel like he's hungry to to make a bigger impact on the game. so Yeah, I mean, we we put some true freshmen out there. I would say that those guys mid made steps forward as well, just overall. like any Any of the true freshmen that started.
00:54:15
Speaker
Yeah. yeah Gaston being one of them. We got to find out if if if his now name is pronounced Gaston. Is it? That's amazing if it is. I hope it is too, because then I'm going to make a video about it.
00:54:31
Speaker
All right. Friend end of the show, Tim Riley. Great week one. Which position group needs the most work against Austin Peay? And what are we looking for with that? Offensive line. Yes. Question. 100%. I think we hit the other one. Any hot takes on future opponents after week one?
00:54:46
Speaker
I guess. do you have hot takes on future opponents? We talked about who you're, I guess, most leery of. it etc Hot takes on future opponents. I don't think that I think that Arch Manning will not be the quarterback by the end of this, by the time that they get to us.
00:55:01
Speaker
Wow. Okay. Nice. That is a hot take.
00:55:06
Speaker
I just am not like, dude, that those throwing motions against one of the best teams in the country. Like, i just don't see that panning out over the course of several months here. Yeah. um The one thing i do, and I don't have it ah i don't have it handy. um You know, like Parker Fleming does those, like, did i really did we really lose that bad?
00:55:26
Speaker
Like the net yards for play thing? Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. um I did see that. And, like, Texas and Ohio State was actually really close in net yards for play. um And then even, like, Panama, Florida State wasn't as off as you would think it was by the score.
00:55:42
Speaker
It was worse than Texas, Ohio State. but Well, I mean, I think that the I hear you, but then there's what you actually see happening on the field kind of thing. So, like, maybe statistically, like, there's things that are there that showcase that this isn't as bad as it is. But, like, then you look at the tape and you see guys walking and jogging.
00:56:07
Speaker
Right. Yeah. for Alabama and you see Arch unable to hit the broadside of a barn. right um i don't know, man. I just don't know about that. I will tell you, we don't have it.
00:56:21
Speaker
It's not a future opponent, but a hot take that I have that is based off Chapelville Curves analysis for the preseason, um which I heard finally got to finish that one earlier this week. But I...
00:56:36
Speaker
i I have serious doubts about LSU's ability to maintain that level of performance over the course of the season because i didn't realize this, but LSU only returns four starters from the team last year, only four starters. And that's not a recipe for success in the SEC. Yeah.
00:56:57
Speaker
Okay. Okay. um I found the Parker Fleming thing and sorry, it's net success rate is the thing that he does. Net success rate. got um So the net success rate, Texas actually had a bit like they had the net, the higher net success rate um as opposed to Ohio state. So Ohio state was one of those rare cases where your success rate net success rate is negative and they won the game.
00:57:21
Speaker
um So that was interesting. So my, my take is actually, I would pump the brakes on the Texas isn't very good. And also Bama isn't very good. Like I know we've seen what happened, but not to jump ahead.
00:57:35
Speaker
Those, that team is not going to show up in Sanford stadium. The one that we saw just FYI. That's my, my thought we can move. I don't want to talk. Amen. Yeah. Amen. Amen. Kaelin DeBoer.
00:57:45
Speaker
What was it? Like 14 games to get to four unranked losses. Oh yeah, I know. It is wild. And 200 and something games for Nick Saban to reach that same mark.
00:57:57
Speaker
Yep. don't know. and Another hot take would be that the Kaelin DeBoer doesn't make it through the end of the season. Yeah. I just, I just remember what, how we were feeling when they lost to Tennessee last year and we went in there.
00:58:09
Speaker
So they looked at, but that's Tennessee. Sure. This is Florida state. Who, who'd they play? and Florida state. Florida state. Who, who, by the way, does look pretty good.
00:58:19
Speaker
But yeah, yeah, we'll see. We'll see. we'll We'll see over the course of the season. I just I just I'm i'm trying not to knee jerk reaction after this. Fair enough. um Let's see. All right. Fletcher Proctor.
00:58:30
Speaker
um Can the person with the offensive line voodoo doll please not? I mean, agreed. Please, please stop doing that. um And then P.S. Early thoughts on the Georgia Cincinnati game.
00:58:42
Speaker
Mike White by 80. ah Fletcher, look, I'm not the Georgia Cincinnati game isn't until December. So I'm going to keep my mind right and focus on what's in front of us for the Georgia basketball. I'm not going to get too ahead of myself.
00:58:54
Speaker
So come on, Fletcher. Keep the main thing, the main thing.
00:58:59
Speaker
ah Love it. Love it. Okay. ah Let's see. John Michael D with a little stitches update. So he he made some ah observations for us. ah Number one, got the wallpaper on time, which again, we' we're recording on Wednesday. Wallpaper was on time again this week. The Georgia social media team is showing that fire passion and energy thus far and getting the wallpaper out on wallpaper Wednesday. Love it.
00:59:21
Speaker
ah Number two, crisis averted with the chapel bell. I don't think we ever talked about this where they like announced like the chapel bell is broken and you can't ring the chapel bell last week, but then thankfully it was fixed in time for kickoff against Austin P. So crisis averted there. And then third QB one baseline.
00:59:39
Speaker
So making some observations on the attire for one gunner Stockton, number one, gonna rocked with the white wristbands on each arm, plus the play sheet with the black skull cap.
00:59:50
Speaker
So, I know, uh, John Michael D will be chiming in weekly on, on Twitter, uh, pregame, uh, when, once he sees what, uh, what Gunner's racking for the game.
01:00:01
Speaker
Yeah. We got to track that wristbands. Wristbands are important. Yes. Gold caps are important. I feel like, I feel like he always wears a black one, but that could just be me, but I feel like I've only ever seen him wearing black, but I'm with you. Um, this far when I've seen, I agree. Yeah.
01:00:19
Speaker
I like it. I like it though. ah we We appreciate the little stitches. I feel like we need to get like a little, like a spooky, like guess like a a spooky sound for when, when, when the little stitches updates come.
01:00:33
Speaker
the Amazing. All right. yeah Let's see. We got Jake is up next. um Branch is a beast, but beyond him, I'm concerned. Should I be?
01:00:45
Speaker
I feel like no, personally. but but Yeah, I feel the answer there is no. um I think that part of this is, you know, they're giving targets to guys that, you know, mean, you got Colby Young.
01:00:57
Speaker
he's He's getting up to speed. I think that the one thing that I'm concerned about is Dylan Bell um continuing the decline that he's had. um i don't know.
01:01:08
Speaker
I'm not sure what's going on there. um I mean, you say that, but then you can also see like, um just look at what's happening with Williams out at at Alabama.
01:01:20
Speaker
True. um you he He had a lot of drops, so like I don't know. I think there's enough depth. There's enough depth there. We didn't have to rely on the pass very much, um which is partially why I want to see us attack the field.
01:01:38
Speaker
yeah i want to I want to see us try to blow the top off a little bit more just so that we can get teams thinking about Gunnar... as a passer as opposed to gunner as a short to intermediate and runner.
01:01:51
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, I agree. um And um skip to Garrett Garrett, which be sure to go check out girls talk ball. um Garrett mentioned Dylan bill. She's a Dylan bill is s still dropping passes, but had some good blocking moments.
01:02:06
Speaker
Do you think he could be a bigger threat elsewhere on the field? And like, that's actually something so when she said that, something that was like going through my head kind of reminded me like, and I think it's something we have to remember about Dylan is like, he was, don't know, of like took one for the team, right? Like when we were super, I don't know, we were hurting in on depth in the running back room and he was willing to change positions, right? Take a bunch of reps at running back and play some running back.
01:02:31
Speaker
um So I don't know. i mean, who knows what that, what that did to him, you know, a couple of years ago back when he was doing that. But I agree to like, there's other ways to contribute. um And he did have a huge block. I mean, he had like this, the final like ceiling block on the long branch touchdown.
01:02:50
Speaker
So, and celebrated, you know, with, with branch, like he was the one that scored, which I think is cool. So, You know, I mean, we named him the unofficial official wide receiver last year for reason. um I'm going to give him some time as the season moves. give him some give him some chances.
01:03:07
Speaker
um I think that he's still got a heck of a lot of talent, but the problem is that we've got a lot of talent that's behind him. the You've got to make some some decisions on where where targets are going.
01:03:18
Speaker
um yeah that blocking Yeah. Speaking of the blocking moments and and overall Dylan Bell, the you know, There's reason that he's out there. Let's just say that.
01:03:29
Speaker
yeahp um If you go back and watch the Zachariah Branch long touchdown, ah you will see that Dylan Bell is a wide receiver that is downfield holding his block, giving Zachariah Branch just enough space down the sideline to get to the end zone.
01:03:46
Speaker
um Dylan Bell as the was arguably the reason that he got he made it to the end zone. Yeah, agreed. ah Let's see, James Lawson. ah What does an improvement in the run game and offensive line play look like against a team like Austin Peay?
01:04:04
Speaker
i mean, to me, it's like the imposing your will kind of thing. You mentioned earlier earlier, like avoiding the fourth downs. And I mean, like, that's it for me. Like last week, i mean, we had issues where it was like third and two, third and one. We're not getting it. And then we're going for a fourth down.
01:04:19
Speaker
Like I'd like to see like see cut that out, um being able to convert on those convert first downs via the ground in those short yardage situations. So that's what it looks like to me.
01:04:30
Speaker
Yeah, I think it it looks like push. It looks like running backs getting ah more than three yards in a cloud or dust. um Yeah, it looks like yak.
01:04:41
Speaker
um So anyway, that's that's my that's my two cents. um just got to move You just got to move the line of scrimmage, basically. Right. Okay. Um, I now get, thanks to JP's fun facts. I now get Herman Wood's joke.
01:04:57
Speaker
He said, considering this week's opponent opponent, is it okay to say I'm going to go pee? So i don't know if you're in the stadium. You might just want to say, I need to go to the restroom. Yeah, just let's go pee. ah man um Let's see. Bubby Dean said Austin P. and FCS team was an eight point underdog to Middle Tennessee State and FBS team on Saturday and beat Middle Tennessee State by 20 points.
01:05:23
Speaker
Is there cause for some Munsoning? JP, what is our stance on Munsoning? Munsoning is dead, guys. Correct. In Kirby we trust. In Kirby we trust. I have a feeling that he was being a little sarcastic on this.
01:05:34
Speaker
um I will say that I'm actually surprised that there was a point spread there. um and it was i mean at eight point an eight point uh underdog is actually like a pretty good line for for them i feel like considering that they are you know yeah who they are fds versus fbs Right, and considering there is no line for the game this week.
01:06:00
Speaker
Correct. Yeah, but seriously, like like just under one score just over one score right is the line for that. like That tells me that Vegas expected it to be fairly close.
01:06:14
Speaker
Right, 100%. yeah um Let's see, Eric Russell, a again with the jokes, if Austin does that in public, then the Athens-Clarke County police will take him straight to jail. Can confirm.
01:06:27
Speaker
all right uh we got that's an embarrassing story i can tell i can tell whoever at the tailgate
01:06:35
Speaker
nice um all right one more fireball
01:06:43
Speaker
Had to bring back the music for Hug Dog. That's what I was about to say. He's back. He's back. ah Jason Huggins at HugDog18 on Twitter. Love being with you guys on Saturday.
01:06:55
Speaker
Thanks for stopping by. Jason, thank you as always for your hospitality. ah It's great great to see you and the family. We're just missing Garrett. It's always a good day when you run into a Huggins. That's right.
01:07:05
Speaker
hundred percent 100%. Okay. He's got three questions for us, John. One, Drew Miller, or not even questions, just three things. One, Drew Miller was a weapon. What a luxury. And like, amen. Like he was lights out.
01:07:18
Speaker
It's pretty cool to know that you've got multiple punters on your roster. That is really cool. Agreed. Second, he says, if our wide receiver receiver room is as deep as we believe, can we now bench repeat offenders who drop passes?
01:07:32
Speaker
think that's kind of where you were going little bit. Yeah. I think that we've got a deep we've got a deep bench. I do think that there will be some decisions that are made if that continues. That said, there are reasons that those guys are out on the field, and those reasons may have nothing to do with drop passes.
01:07:49
Speaker
True. um There may be a balancing act of pros and cons that's happening there, but it's interesting that the Huggins clan has caught up on that one.
01:08:00
Speaker
Right. I know, right? oh um And then finally, how would you settle the starting five on the offensive line? Oh, man, I'm not the person to ask for this. ah Stacey, just figure it out, bro.
01:08:16
Speaker
I mean, I feel like Gaston seems like he's one of those guys that just he's that dude. So I feel like he's he's got a spot. Drew Bobo, obviously, he's got his spot locked down, I feel like.
01:08:28
Speaker
um I think that Fairchild and Ernest Green are pretty locked in as well as long as they're healthy so where where does that leave us i don't know fill sprinkle in some some others yeah yeah ah did dude have you seen like the pancake block that guest on had where he just like leveled the guy yeah i mean and mean know you know came in and started coming in and start a game for yeah know for kirby smart as a true freshman is is impressive so
01:08:59
Speaker
du dude speaking of i don't know what team it was but there was uh someone posted a video of i want to say it was auburn maybe it was either auburn or the miami game um sorry
01:09:16
Speaker
yes it's never too early um But there was there's a play that they had a they had an offensive lineman lined up in the slot, and it was a kickout block. So the the offensive lineman came in motion across the formation and just absolutely demolished a cornerback.
01:09:38
Speaker
Nice.
01:09:42
Speaker
I'd like to see a little bit of creativity like that from ah some of the play calling there. Like that's, that's what we call scheming guys open and scheming plays ah to do certain things. So anyway, I thought that that was, that was funny. I'm going to go back and find that clip and send it to you, Jim, because it is worth its weight.
01:09:59
Speaker
Okay. Yeah, I guess back to answer this actual question. Yeah, I don't know. I'm not the one either. um But I do. i hope it is like just to reiterate what we said earlier. Like, I hope it is something that gets settled and we're not like trying to figure it out through the season.
01:10:15
Speaker
um I'd love to get it settled. And like, that's it. We know who our guys are um and keep them healthy and on the field. So. Yeah, we saw some 12 personnel in there, so it sounds like that you know we may see some tight ends involved in the blocking.
01:10:29
Speaker
Elias Williams coming in, you know he's a big body. um kind of like ah he He kind of reminds me of, I mean, he seems like he's more athletic than Darnell Washington, but he's got that size of Darnell Washington.
01:10:41
Speaker
Right. I like the sound of that. Yeah. I mean, first game, they went to him. Yeah, true. All right. And Jason just rounded out. appreciate it Sick them. So, absolutely, Jason. I appreciate you, sir.
01:10:53
Speaker
Yes, sir. right, JP, you ready? Let's go.
01:10:58
Speaker
Oh, my God. Oh, my God. A freshman. Trying to put glasses on. 90-80. Whoa, brother.

Over/Under Predictions for Austin Peay Game

01:11:08
Speaker
It is time for Coach Trillbills Over Unders Austin Peay edition.
01:11:14
Speaker
JP, you are in the lead in Coach's Over Unders, so you have the honors. Would you like to go first, or would you like me go first? I will You will defer. Okay. Okay. Well done.
01:11:25
Speaker
All right. um Let's see here. First up... On the offense, over under quarterbacks that play set at three and a half. um So he's thinking we're going get beyond Puglisi. And then the question is, do we get beyond the next person?
01:11:41
Speaker
You never know. you never know. I'm going under, though. the a to go under as well. Okay. All right, over to you. ah Next up, total rush yards. Over, under, 230. I'm going to go over.
01:11:53
Speaker
think I have to. I'm playing strategery. Over. just kidding. I actually do think we'll go over. um And then over, under, passing touchdowns at three and a half. um So I think we had we had three last week.
01:12:09
Speaker
um But with all the talk of airing it out this week that we had earlier, I've got to go stick with that and say over. Yeah, I'm going to go. i I'm with you I'm going to go over on that one. Okay. No, no, no strategery. Okay.
01:12:20
Speaker
Fair enough. Fair enough. ah Let's go to the defense and then you can go first here. JP first one for the defense was over under eight and a half tackles for loss for the Georgia defense.
01:12:33
Speaker
Hmm. Uh, I'm going to go over. Okay. Okay. No strategy here, actually. um Over under two and a half sacks.
01:12:44
Speaker
um I'm going to go over. I was kind kind of with you, I feel like, last week. I feel like there actually maybe was at least one. um But I feel like they're going to be hungry um after not getting any last week. going to I agree.
01:12:59
Speaker
and Agreed. Okay. And then over under one and a half interceptions. This is for either team, right? So I'm going to go over. Well, this is the defense area. I think this is for the Georgia area. The Georgia defense.
01:13:14
Speaker
Got it, got it, got it. I'll go over. um go over okay I'll just to see what happens. okay i'll go under just to see what happens Just to see what happens. All right. Strategery. Strategery. I don't have a good feeling on that one.
01:13:31
Speaker
and Not that I don't feel we can do it. just, I don't have a good, thing I don't have a good read on that one either. um Okay. And then I guess it's over to me. So on special teams over under two and a half punt returns for Austin.
01:13:43
Speaker
So Marshall had two punt returns. Austin P had two punt returns last week as well. So going to go under. hey I'm going to under as well. Okay. last but not least, the miscellaneous over to you, JP.
01:13:59
Speaker
Over under 35 and a half. Or sorry, over under 35 total Georgia players were with a recorded stat. do How many players did we have last week with a recorded stat?
01:14:11
Speaker
and don't know. I'm going to go over. Screw it. Okay. Strategery under. sorry Sorry, coach. Now you have to count. Now you have to count.
01:14:25
Speaker
good All right. um Thank you, coach Trill, as always for sending those in and tracking and tracking them. um Like we said in the last episode, it's always a, it's a great text message to get the day after the game when coaches are here's the over unders.
01:14:40
Speaker
That's amazing. So it's a good time. It is amazing. it is good. Thank you, coach. Thank you, coach. Um, okay. Um, I guess now we'll do

Game Predictions and Betting Lines

01:14:50
Speaker
our picks for the game. So this is where we would usually go over things like, here's what the line is. And that gives us an implied score of this.
01:14:58
Speaker
And these services are saying all of these things, like the, the things that I used to look up to do like projections, they don't have FCS teams in there. Um, we checked our odd shark. I double checked on fan duel sports book there.
01:15:12
Speaker
This game appears to be off the board. No line, um So we don't have anything like that. um i don't know, man. We beat them 45 to nothing last time. I'm going to go 45 to seven. ah Really? i i was that's That's what I had earmarked. 45, seven.
01:15:28
Speaker
okay garbage Garbage time touchdown. Right. Yeah. That's kind of what I'm thinking too. That's what I'm thinking. So, you know, yeah not to be dismissive, but FCS team, I'm expecting the dogs to to handle them on Saturday.
01:15:40
Speaker
All right. You want to take a look around the SEC for some pick-em games from coach? Yeah, let's do it. Okay. Let's see. We've got three games from coach this week. First one, we have Ole Miss at Kentucky.
01:15:54
Speaker
um Ole Miss is ri comes in ranked number 20. ah Both teams are 1-0. Ole Miss is favored by 10.5 points. This game is at 330 on ABC.
01:16:05
Speaker
I'll kick us off. um'm I'm going to go with ah the fighting Fighting Hunters and Lane Kiven. 330. What's the weather? the weather. In Lexington? Yeah. not sure. Now, you know, Kentucky did beat Ole Miss last year. i Remember Brock Vandegrift had that long touchdown throw and they beat him.
01:16:23
Speaker
I don't expect that to repeat. Could be a wet game. Okay. Which could factor in. um i don't know, man. Kentucky such a weird place to go and play. um Sometimes it's sometimes it's it's got some some some difficulty there.
01:16:39
Speaker
And like you said, you know, they they've pulled it off in the past, right? Yeah. um Just to be different, I'm going to go Kentucky. Just because sure when you when you first were asking me about it and then I see the weather forecast for it, don't know.
01:16:54
Speaker
I just got Kentucky vibes. Sorry, Hunter. That's okay. Look, Hunter and the entire family is going be repping wearing we're in Georgia stuff. We've we've seen what Truett gets dressed up in.
01:17:05
Speaker
Selfishly, want to see our opponents that come town. Selfishly, I want to see those ticket prices come down. that come to town selfishly i want to see those ticket prices come Okay, you know now I see where this is going. nice
01:17:21
Speaker
That's funny. All right, USF. that's So South Florida at number 13, Florida. ah The Gators are favored by 17 and a half. This one is in the swamp at 4.15 p.m. on SEC Network.
01:17:35
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, Florida. I got to take Florida on that one. Yeah, I'll go Florida. 17 and a half is an interesting point spread, though, for that game. Yeah, for sure.
01:17:45
Speaker
that that That could be one of those ones where the announcer is the announcer is making jokes about an extra point being very important to some people. I mean, it's just interesting that it's, you know, I guess it's a couple scores.
01:17:59
Speaker
um <unk>s yeah Three scores. Yeah, i don't know. I guess I thought i thought that that the way that Florida's been performing, that that spread would have been a little bit bigger, but... Well, you know, you USF did, I mean, they beat Boise State.
01:18:12
Speaker
Hey, man, if you can make, showton I'd like to see, get a little bit more film on Lagway, make it close. I'd like to see that. Yeah. um Okay. Then last up, this is the only top 25 matchup and where both teams are in the top 25 of the week.
01:18:29
Speaker
You get number 15, Michigan, with their freshman quarterback heading to number 18, Oklahoma, at 7.30 p.m. on ABC. And Oklahoma is favored by five and a half.
01:18:39
Speaker
Really? Yeah. Yeah. And that, did did you see the highlights of the Michigan kid? um under Yeah. Yeah. He looked good. He looks legit. Yeah. um Interesting.
01:18:51
Speaker
Yeah. I'm going to go with maybe Vegas knows something. um so I'm going to go with. I'm going go Michigan. Okay. give amy give me that Give me that quarterback. Yeah, he looked good, man.
01:19:03
Speaker
he did He looked really good. he looked He looked as advertised in week one. So we'll see if he can keep that up. We should get some ah we'll get some separation in the in the picks this week. So not agreeing on things. We'll see where this goes.
01:19:18
Speaker
This is like the pick-ems is like winning the SEC. And the over-unders is the nanny. The over-unders is the CFP. ah ah Amazing. amazing nobody Nobody remembers the pick-em's gym.
01:19:34
Speaker
Yeah, that's the whole thing. like People keep saying, like oh, like Georgia stuff like from last year or whatever, and I'm still like, we did win the SEC, guys. I don't know. Get off my lawn. Well, i um I will not be there, ah but i know I know you will.

Weekend Plans and Conclusion

01:19:50
Speaker
So you be sure to and and enjoy your weekend. Yeah, it's going to be fun. um and a little little Got a little golf golf planned on Friday and staying at the Casa de Wood.
01:20:03
Speaker
Ponda's famous guest guest bedroom.
01:20:08
Speaker
oh That's awesome. that' Looking forward to it. I need to connect with your dad on on what their plans are. Yeah. Yeah. Feel free to text or call. Either one will be. ah You got it. Also, you got to let me know about about golf. I'm definitely interested to see how that goes. I have never played. I've never, I've never played there. So the UGA course. Yeah. The UGA course. Yeah. I never played in the course. So I haven't, I have neither. I did get some pro tips though.
