We're back. back. Here we are. Pretty, it's a pretty big pretty big week, eh, Jim?

Significance of the Georgia vs Alabama Game

00:00:56
Speaker
It's a big one.
00:00:57
Speaker
um I feel like this is one of those, like, game of the year, game of the century of the year, of the week. Not according to ESPN, Jim.
00:01:08
Speaker
Oh, it's not? Well, true. couldn't even Couldn't even send game day couldn't Couldn't get game day to muster enough effort to come down. True. Fair. Fair.
00:01:19
Speaker
ah That's okay. We'll just have SEC nation. And Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan. True. True. I did like the tweets. People were responding like, Hmm, what are we to read into this?
00:01:31
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. yeah Yeah. Might they announce something? is it Is it possible they could, is it possible they could hard launch a concert series in Sanford stadium?
00:01:42
Speaker
Yeah, I would. Seems likely. Seems likely. We'll find out. Stay tuned. Stay tuned. Hey, I've been jamming out to Jason Aldean's just getting warmed up lately. So if he plays that while SEC Nation is here, that that'd be awesome.
00:01:57
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, for sure.

Historical Context: 75th Matchup

00:02:00
Speaker
um I told you in the recording before the recording, I just said that I found the nugget and because I didn't read this in like the official game notes or anything, but this is actually the 75th matchup between Georgia and Alabama.
00:02:14
Speaker
The 75th anniversary. a 75th. Well, just 75th. 75th. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. 75th gameplay. um I was looking at the like all time series history and I was like, wait a minute.
00:02:26
Speaker
This feels like a big number. Let me do some math.
00:02:31
Speaker
So. It was pretty funny. But yeah, so yeah, we've played 74 times. This will be number 75 between the hedges on on Saturday night. So looking forward to it.
00:02:42
Speaker
It's our diamond. It's our diamond diamond anniversary for the matchup. Okay. Okay. Okay. Nice. Nice. um Also, i don't know. We'll have to see um if I get all the way there by Saturday, but I'm almost done with Band of Brothers, John, in the off-campusion of the podcast.
00:03:04
Speaker
I watched the penultimate episode today, so I've got one left. All right. I got to lock in. I get like dialed in. I like lock in to watch these things. You've been taking breaks to watch Wednesday. um I feel like there's there's more Wednesday that's been watched.
00:03:20
Speaker
Well, it is true. We finished Wednesday and then Kim and I finished the final season of You and now we we just started another show. All right. Well, um I'm going to be interested. what What are your thoughts so far?
00:03:35
Speaker
I know that last time we talked, to you were like, I think I've watched this before, but i want to get to a part where I haven't. Oh, yeah. So I'm definitely beyond what I had seen. Yeah, yeah. So I had not seen the whole thing.
00:03:47
Speaker
um And yeah, man, I'm at, like I said, I just watched the second to last one. So like they're in Germany. um Man, ah it's tough to watch too.
00:03:59
Speaker
Like it's very good. um I also have found myself like going back and looking through my mom's stuff about my my grandfather her dad um and we've pulled up some of that um because like the battle of the bulge episode uh like outside bestone was you know that was another one like tough one um and when they're there like christmas you know around that time and like that's actually where my grandfather got captured there um or in that battle. He wasn't, he was in the 106th, not the 101st, but he was captured during that battle.
00:04:35
Speaker
um I think he was North of where they were at, but just crazy to think about, you know, still suboptimal. Yeah. Yeah.

Band of Brothers and Personal Connections

00:04:45
Speaker
yeah Yeah. The whole, but yeah. The whole series is definitely like got school teachers leading battalions of men. Like,
00:04:54
Speaker
I don't know. It's fantastic. I highly recommend it. I highly recommend it. I don't know why it's taken me so long. It should not have. So almost done. It's phenomenal. I started it after you started yours and I've already i've already finished it like ah couple weeks ago. You already did the full rewatch.
00:05:12
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I already did the full full rewatch. Yeah.
00:05:20
Speaker
ah yeah The EZ company story is is certainly interesting. i was like watching the the men afterward afterwards, like when the guys, or before the episode goes, like they they talk.
00:05:32
Speaker
It's like, geez. You had the interviews. Yeah, it's phenomenal. It's very well done. It's very well done. and very well All right. um I suppose we can dive in. i suppose we can talk about the football game. we know with the play game itmi grandner andrener we got We got another war, a different kind of war coming up. That's right. That's right. A battle between the hedges.

Game Setup and Details

00:07:05
Speaker
Saturday night.
00:07:05
Speaker
We got kickoff. It's at 730 Saturday at Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium. ah The dogs come in 3-0, 1-0 in the SEC. This is Alabama's SEC opener. They have not played a conference game yet. They are 2-1 with that opening loss to Florida State.
00:07:23
Speaker
ah The dogs are number three and number five in the polls. Bama is number 16 and number 17. The game is on ABC. We've got the primetime crew, Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreet, and Holly Rowe.
00:07:34
Speaker
The official hashtag that we will forget to use is hashtag Bama versus UGA. And like I said earlier, the all-time series, Alabama leads 44-26-4, making this the meeting between the schools.
00:07:47
Speaker
Last meeting was won by Alabama last year in Tuscaloosa, 41 to 34 when our comeback fell just short. um The weather has continued to change throughout the week.
00:08:00
Speaker
So it looks like it's going pretty warm, around 80 degrees or so on the day. Bring a poncho. I guess definitely some precipitation possible.
00:08:12
Speaker
So just be on the lookout for that. Backuponcho. That's my recommendation. Packing a poncho. right, Jim. Yeah. Yeah. I will definitely have one packed and then I'll make a game time decision as to whether it leaves the house and comes to the stadium.
00:08:31
Speaker
We can always retreat to the breezeway. Always can you go to the breezeway. um Which right there, i don't know, maybe right there, important announcement. We want to touch on that. My God a Podcast will be in attendance in person.
00:08:44
Speaker
That's true. That's true. We're going to put our record on the line. We're going to put test. to put it to the test Look, man, multiple streaks on the line. Not only is the My Gotta Podcast, when we both attend a game in person streak, ah mean we've got the Georgia 33-game home win streak on the line.
00:09:05
Speaker
So not since that South Carolina 2019 was the last time we lost between the hedges. So lot

Georgia's Historical Performance Against Alabama

00:09:11
Speaker
on the line Saturday night in Athens. Yes, that will be that'll be that'll be a fun time for sure.
00:09:18
Speaker
i am looking forward to it myself. I guess while we're on that, like on the hit, I guess kind of like the history matchup kind of stuff. So I'll, I'll run down a couple of things about George with Bama. So, um, Kirby's one in six against Bama as a head coach at Georgia, but he, we have never faced Alabama at home during that time.
00:09:42
Speaker
So, i mean, this is the first time we get them at home since 2015, uh, Rick's last season, uh, rick's lasie which is wild. It's been 10 years. It's going to be 10 years to the date, by the way.
00:09:55
Speaker
Oh, wow. Yeah. Okay. So 10 years to the day since we played them, that was that rain game. um We were like taunting them coming the tunnel and then they just waxed us. um The last time we beat them at home, again, we hadn't played them at home since 2015, but the last time we beat them at home was in back in 2003.
00:10:12
Speaker
two thousand and three So got one back in our days, back in our days. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So those those are just a couple of things have there. We've got a lot of demons to exercise on this one, Jim.
00:10:24
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Agreed. Agreed. All right. um Let's see. i I believe you have some fun facts. do you have some fun facts that as well? have I have a fun fact. Obviously, we've played these guys quite a bit over the last several years.
00:10:37
Speaker
sir So I don't recall talking about this in the past, but maybe, Jim, you're you're you super vi your super memory will won be able to recall if we did or not.
00:10:48
Speaker
we'll see ah We'll see. I'm going to touch on Yeah Alabama. Yeah. Have you, do you recall us ever were talking about this? Yeah, Alabama is a song that they that they sing. It's like their fight song or whatever.
00:11:00
Speaker
And... It came about in 1926 through a competition, and it was something that happened after they won the Rose Bowl, the national championship back in back in that time period.
00:11:13
Speaker
um It was written by a student. by the There was an editor, the Rammer Jammers. I think he's an attorney now, or was an attorney at that time, um like later on.
00:11:25
Speaker
And I'm going to read you the the lyrics to this thing, Jim. Okay. Okay. I'm ready. Hit me with it. And from from what I've read in my extensive, extensive, very, very highly, like Jason would be so proud of me to research.
00:11:40
Speaker
um Apparently it was written overnight but by this by the student, which is like a totally a college kid thing to do. Right. Right. Seriously. All right. Here we go. This is this is the the, yeah, Alabama fight song.
00:11:53
Speaker
yeah alabama Yeah, Alabama, drown them tied. Every Bama man's behind you. Hit your stride. Go teach the Bulldogs to behave. Send the Yellow Jackets to a watery grave.
00:12:06
Speaker
And if a man starts to weaken, that's a shame. For Bama's pluck and grit have writ her name in crimson flame. Fight on, fight on, fight on, men. Remember the Rose Bowl.
00:12:18
Speaker
We'll win then. So roll on to victory. Hit your stride. You're Dixie's football pride. Crimson Tide. Roll Tide. Roll Tide. Interesting. does anything Does anything strike you as odd in that fight song, Jim?
00:12:32
Speaker
Yes. Okay. So they I heard two schools from Georgia mentioned. I heard Georgia and Georgia Tech. I heard no Auburn, right? I heard zero Auburn.
00:12:43
Speaker
Wow. That's weird. Which is weird, right? is that like ah Is that like a we hate them so much we can't even like say their name kind of thing, I wonder? So in my extensive research, I... you actually have an answer for this. Amazing.
00:12:58
Speaker
I do have an answer. i do have an answer to this because I was curious as well okay um about that. And I believe that the answer to that question is... So back so the so this this is all referencing the season.
00:13:15
Speaker
like This is like just a total college kid thing to do. So it was written after after they won, right? So it's referencing victories from that season. So this fight song is literally about one season, basically, which is kind of crazy as well.
00:13:31
Speaker
Okay. So... Go teach the Bulldogs to behave is referring to the 27 to nothing victory over the Georgia Bulldogs at that year. and the year In that year. 1925, whatever.
00:13:42
Speaker
um And the Yellow Jackets to a watery grave refers to a rainy 7 to nothing win against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Hmm. Remember the Rose Bowl will win then.
00:13:54
Speaker
um So that's talking about Alabama's first Rose Bowl victory in 1926. And I believe that this was written as part of a contest because the Rose Bowl requested that they have a song to have played at the Rose Bowl.
00:14:13
Speaker
They didn't have one at the time. So let's write it the night before. So let's write it the night before and cram and cram that sucker in ah college, college, even in the twenties.
00:14:27
Speaker
But yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, so yeah, anyway, that's, uh, that's the, the, yeah, Alabama. And ironically, yeah, Alabama was their NIL, like, you know, collect collective or whatever that they had.
00:14:40
Speaker
Gotcha. um But yeah, so Georgia and Georgia Tech are mentioned in the Alabama fight song. And I had no idea about this. And we've played them however many times we've played them. And that hasn't come up in the fun facts.
00:14:54
Speaker
um But I thought that that would be an interesting path to go down. And I'm elated to find out that we are living rent free in Alabama's head. Since 1925. Since 1925. Yes. We'll have to but to drop a note to Marler and and let him know that he's carrying a tradition he's carrying on a tradition from decades ago ah of trolling Of trolling Georgia fans.
00:15:25
Speaker
I mean, i would say ah Georgia Bulldogs living rent-free in Alabama's head for 100 years. I think that's there you go that's the tagline we have right there. There we go.
00:15:36
Speaker
That's actually a good tweet, Jim. We need to we need to we need to we need to post that from the main. Let's try out let's try try to remember that. Put some glasses on it. i think ah so I think that um there's a couple of other, like and some of the other research that I did, like some people were saying that it was referring to like the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
00:15:58
Speaker
Yeah. But that does not track with the just not track what the the way that this thing was written. But like got ah I was trying to look it up. i had a page up, but I i must have closed it. But um I think that Mississippi State is one of their oldest rivals.
00:16:15
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, that's one of their permanent rivals or permanent annual opponents in the new round, which I'm sure we're not going to get all into that, but I'm sure everyone saw that.
00:16:28
Speaker
the newest The new schedule is out, and announced to everyone. I'm calling them permanent opponents, not necessarily permanent rivals. Permanent opponents. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. So cool. Awesome. That was great.
00:16:40
Speaker
If we've talked about that before, i totally forgot. So I think, I think that passes. i think that passes the test. to test a Awesome. All right. Let's see. Ready for hasty's Hagrid history.
00:16:54
Speaker
Let's move on.
00:17:10
Speaker
All right. Hastings Hargaret history, Alabama edition. um Reminder, you can always go over and see Jason at the Hargaret library on Fridays during the fall.

Recount of the 1965 Game

00:17:21
Speaker
ah So you could do that this week. If you're over there ahead of the game, um you can head over there this year. There is an exhibit going on around UGA swimming and diving that was helped curated by legendary coach, Jack Bowerly, as well as Jason, obviously.
00:17:35
Speaker
So, Always good time to go stop by and see Jason. right, here we go. um From Jason, this is what he sent us. Georgia's games against Alabama are rarely carefree affairs.
00:17:46
Speaker
For Georgia fans of all ages, every new game against Alabama is covered in the shadows of past struggles. The 1964 season was Vince Dulee's second in Athens. His team had exceeded all expectations by finishing third in the conference behind national champion Alabama and Arch Rival, Florida.
00:18:01
Speaker
Dooley's squad, which some writers believed would be lucky to win as many as two or three games, posted a strong 7-3-1 record and defeated Texas Tech in the Sun Bowl. Prospects for the 1965 season were low, with writers again picking Georgia to finish near the bottom of the SEC.
00:18:17
Speaker
The reason for that pessimism was valid. Georgia had lost most of its starting talent on the offense and didn't have any star players on defense. Writers also pointed out a severe lack of depth. If the team began to sustain injuries, it simply wouldn't be able to replace those players who were out.
00:18:31
Speaker
Dooley had recruited well in his first year, but freshmen were ineligible to play on the varsity team under the existing NCAA rules. By the way, that always is wild to me. And that's like a ah thing my dad always likes to point out.
00:18:44
Speaker
Um, All right. Georgia's offense was led by a quarterback, Preston Riedel Huber, ah pronunciation guide, please, who had led the dogs in 64. We were more of a running team in 1964, said Dooley.
00:18:57
Speaker
Riedel Huber was improved as a passer and we will throw more in 65. At halfback was Bob Taylor, a 195 pound senior. Taylor was the only returning back from a deep backfield that had powered the Bulldogs in 1964.
00:19:10
Speaker
The defense was centered around 6'3", 210-pound defensive left tackle General George Patton. Patton anchored the six-man line of Coach Erk Russell's defense. Bear Bryant's 1965 Alabama team was coming off a 10-1 record and a national championship in 1964. In Vince Dooley's first a game as head coach, Alabama easily defeated Georgia thirty one to three in Tuscaloosa.
00:19:33
Speaker
The prospects for the 1965 matchup in Athens weren't much better, despite Alabama star quarterback Joe Namath's departure to the AFL's New York Jets after the 1964 The game on September 18, 1965 in Sanford Stadium would be the season opener for both teams.
00:19:49
Speaker
Going into the game, Alabama was a 13-point favorite over the Bulldogs. the game was The game was a tough defensive battle, but didn't lack for excitement. With Georgia leading 3-0 after a Bobby Edder kick, General George Patton picked off quarterback Steve Sloan and ran it in for a touchdown.
00:20:04
Speaker
Alabama's Bobby Johns picked off Preston Bradlehuber and returned it for a touchdown. Late in the game, the Bulldogs at Crimson Tide were locked up 10-10. In the fourth quarter, Sloan led a long Alabama touchdown drive to get the Tide 17-10 lead.
00:20:18
Speaker
Rattlehuber had left the game with a leg injury, and backup quarterback Kirby Moore had taken his place. Things looked bleak for the Bulldogs. But then, things took a turn. Vince Dooley called for a trick play, a flea flicker that had not worked well in practice, but which he felt could give his team a spark.
00:20:34
Speaker
Kirby Moore threw a short pass to right end Pat Hodgson. Hodgson, while falling down, deflected the ball to Bob Taylor, who was trailing Hodgson but but near the sideline. The deflection caught Alabama's defenders flat-footed, and Taylor ran it in for a long touchdown.
00:20:47
Speaker
The play covered 73 yards and brought the score to 16-17.
00:20:52
Speaker
In conversation with Coach Dooley before he passed away, I asked him about what he remembered about that play. This is Jason talking. he He was excited, obviously, but he recalled that former Oklahoma coach Bud Wilkinson, who was covering the game for ABC television, got caught up in the moment and went back to his coaching days.
00:21:07
Speaker
He ran up beside Dooley and began shouting at the team that they needed to go for two. Dooley laughed as he recounted this and said that he told Wilkinson that he knew that he knew and had just called the two-point play. Kirby Moore hit Pat Hodgson for two points, and Georgia led 18-17 very little time left.
00:21:21
Speaker
with very little time left In true Georgia fashion, the game was not quite over. Steve Sloan led Alabama on a furious drive. With only 14 seconds left on the clock, David Ray, who had led kickers nationally in scoring in 1964, lined up on the 26-yard line for what should have been a sure three points.
00:21:37
Speaker
The kick was short and to the left of the goalposts, and Georgia took possession of the ball. With a quick kneel down, mighty Alabama had been defeated. Georgia won its next three games of the season, including a win over Michigan Arbor,
00:21:50
Speaker
ah Jason adds he guessed Connor Stallion's grandfather hadn't scouted Georgia well enough and had reached a number four and had reached number four ranking in the AP poll. After that injuries and a lack of death took their, took their toll.
00:22:02
Speaker
Georgia ended the season unranked with a six and four record. Alabama recovered from the loss to dominate the rest of his schedule and ended the season with a six, one and one record. The tie was against Tennessee and the national championship.
00:22:14
Speaker
The victory over Alabama signaled that the Bulldogs and their young coach would be a force in the SEC going forward. The long drought of the 50s and early 60s was over, and Georgia was once again a contender for bowl games and championships.
00:22:25
Speaker
Alabama fans have long argued that the play was incorrectly called. They argued that Pat Hodgson's knees were down when he caught the ball, so the play should have ended there. Georgia fans argue Hodgson never possessed a ball and simply deflected the pass to Taylor.
00:22:37
Speaker
So whether or not his knees were down was irrelevant. This is similar to an argument about the immaculate reception between Steelers and Raiders fans. Ultimately, with no replay, what the referees called in the moment matters. As a postscript to this story, the inimitable Barbara Dooley enjoys telling the story of meeting Bear Bryant at an SEC event not long after this game.
00:22:55
Speaker
She introduced herself to Bryant, who then laughed and said, Mrs. Dooley, and I'm the man who made made your husband famous. Amazing. What I will add is for my recollection that also made one young Frippdog a Georgia fan.
00:23:10
Speaker
ah That game was the day my dad became a Georgia fan because he's watching that game. Oh, wow. Okay. Was he actually there? ah okay He was watching it on TV. He was watching it on TV and decided that that was the day.
00:23:23
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. So a pivotal, so a pivotal Georgia win led to a, a, a generation ah correct wood, of wood fans. Exactly. and And it was a you know, it was a big, it was a big departure because, you know, my, my grandfather went to tech.
00:23:39
Speaker
So, uh, it was a big change. It was big change there. alright All right. All right. Did your dad, did your dad do that because you wanted to make your dad and your grandfather mad?
00:23:50
Speaker
Cause I did that to my dad, but I eventually realized the errors of my ways. No, no, it was more, was it more that fateful day, JP with the flu thicker, which is more a hook and ladder. It's it's always kind of funny, as but it's always referred to as a flu thicker.
00:24:04
Speaker
Um, but it was more hook and ladder, but I digress. Yeah. That's awesome. Thanks as always, Jason. It's always fun to see, see these stories unfold. Yeah, for sure. For sure. Shout out Jason Hasey of the Hargaret Library.
00:24:17
Speaker
Always, always appreciated. All right, let's see.

Press Conference Updates and Injuries

00:24:22
Speaker
News and notes. So not a lot from the press conferences. Just a couple of things from Kirby.
00:24:28
Speaker
One, Good news. He said that there are no limitations for peanut. So if that was good news. Then he got a question on Ernest Green and Juan Gaston. He kind of dodged it.
00:24:41
Speaker
Honestly, he didn't give them any hopeful or anything, but he just talked about what they were able to do at practice, not where they were healthy or not. Um, I will add though, as we're recording on Wednesday, the injury report is out.
00:24:53
Speaker
Um, Gaston is not listed on the injury report, so that's good. But Ernest green is listed as doubtful. So not sure. We're going to not, not sure. We'll see Ernest this week.
00:25:05
Speaker
But he didn't get the he didn't get the kiss of death, hopeful. He did not get the hopeful kiss of death. So we will see. We got we gotta to get the the rankings here, right? like If Kirby says you're hopeful, but if you're listed as doubtful, then you got a shot.
00:25:21
Speaker
Correct. Exactly. um Nothing. i didn't i didn't see anything like earth shattering, anything from like Caelan DeBoer's press conference. I think the only thing news and notes wise there is running back Jim Miller has been out and sounds like he's expected to return.
00:25:36
Speaker
So just FYI on that one. and Okay. um All right, so let's see. In the game itself, JP, um net yards per play, i will say, overall, like Alabama definitely looking better than Georgia there at 2.63 yards per play.
00:25:52
Speaker
We're only at 0.7, so we need to get that up. And turnover margin, something they have been very good at. So Alabama is plus six in the turnover department, whereas we are minus one.
00:26:06
Speaker
the What I hear you saying is that we need a regression to the mean. Correct. Correct. All right. What do you let's actually, yeah. So let's talk about that. What we're looking for when Georgia has the ball.
00:26:19
Speaker
um So the Georgia offense, Alabama defense, um some notable folks from Alabama. So the leading tackler is senior linebacker, Deontay Lawson.
00:26:30
Speaker
ah He's got 19 total tackles on the season. Junior Bray Hubbard, defensive back has two picks mentioned. They've got six takeaways on the season. And then Yonsei Pierre is a sophomore linebacker.
00:26:43
Speaker
He is the sack leader on the team ah with just one, one total sack. So just a few folks to look out for on the Alabama defense. yeah What are you, what are you looking at? What are you looking for? don't know from our offense.
00:26:56
Speaker
I mean, I think, I think just like everything, everything for the season is going to come down to the offensive line and what we're able to do along, ah along that front. um I like the fact that they are ranked 78th in the country and in rushing defense.
00:27:13
Speaker
um So they're giving up 138 yards offense. I would say that if you were give that number before the would Yeah. rushing off i would say that if you were to give me that number before the game i would take it um So, yeah, I'd say that if if we can just get them into, you know, playing to their, you know, averages on the rushing side of things and then get them uncomfortable in the passing side of things.
00:27:40
Speaker
um As you look at curious, I mean, yeah, like I said, I think that it's ultimately going to come down to that. I think that their their one loss on the season is to Florida State, which by and large looks to be you know one of the great quarterbacks of the season.
00:27:57
Speaker
But aside from that, they haven't really played a whole lot of anybody. Wisconsin sucks. eu Louisiana Monroe sucks. So they basically played a couple of practice games and haven't really been battle-tested against a true ah true defense and offense, um unless you are categorizing Florida State into that into that category.
00:28:17
Speaker
um So, yeah, I think that we'll be okay with these guys. Like I said, if we can get the offensive line moving in their averages um for the for rushing attack, um i would I would take that number all day long.
00:28:32
Speaker
I think that ah what are we we're averaging 209, and they're giving up 138, somewhere in in there. Yeah. and That's, that's largely what i'm going to be looking for. And then ah most importantly, it's going to be just the, you know, no, no turnovers. Like if we can win the turnover battle and we can get the offensive line to get a good push.
00:28:56
Speaker
I like our, i like our chances against our D against this defense. So you're saying it would be better to not just come out throwing interceptions all the time like Carson Beck did last year? Is that what you're talking about? Correct. Correct. I concur.
00:29:08
Speaker
I concur. It turns out when you throw interceptions backed up on your own 10 yard line, that's not good. Yeah. Yeah. No, I'm with you. And I mean, you know, I would say last game against Tennessee, taking the shot play early, definitely opened things up, I think for this offense.
00:29:27
Speaker
And then also love You know, the 13 personnel, I mean, where we're struggling on the offense line, bringing those extra blockers via the tight ends and run the dang ball. So I'm with you, man.
00:29:38
Speaker
I'm with you. And we saw Gunnar do it with his arm and his legs. We've seen him do that basically all season, except the one game when they didn't really let him run. So I expect to see more of that as well.
00:29:48
Speaker
So I'm with you. Yep. Cool. All right. Let's talk about when Bama's got the ball, kind of their offense, our defense. So they are led by junior quarterback Ty Simpson.
00:30:00
Speaker
He has thrown for 862 yards in nine touchdowns, no interceptions on the season, 72% completion percentage, 186 QBR. um So he he has statistically has done very well.
00:30:14
Speaker
Um, kind of a two leading rushers are Kevin Riley. He's a freshman running back 120 yards. And then AK deer, also a freshman running back 85 yards and seven attempts and one touchdown. So like, we're not, not a ton of rushing come out of this offense.
00:30:31
Speaker
Um, but with the passing, uh, Bernard is actually the leading receiver. So Jeremy Bernard, senior wide receiver, 15 catches, 275 yards, three touchdowns.
00:30:42
Speaker
Then Ryan Williams, he's 18 now, I guess. He's not 17 anymore. ah Sophomore receiver, 10 catches, 195 yards, and two touchdown so Yeah. If the ball gets thrown up, guys, just bat it down, please.
00:30:57
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. ah Let's talk about that a little bit. Cause I think we talked, I can't remember if we specifically talked about it on the podcast or not, or if this was you and i just talking, who knows before the podcast, after the podcast texting, like Tennessee, and think we were talking about, or you had said something along the lines of like the receivers are, and they're not like similar receivers. It feels like Tennessee is like the big physical, like go up and get the ball. Yeah.
00:31:21
Speaker
kind of thing where at least William is for sure. i mean, um he can make a catch in traffic. i mean, we've seen him do it, but I feel like his strength is more like after the catch and being shifty, et cetera. and I don't feel like they're like the same kind of receivers as we saw at Tennessee.
00:31:35
Speaker
Yeah, so Jeremy Bernard is 204, and Williams is is 6'178 pounds.
00:31:47
Speaker
And, you know, so their two biggest weapons are nowhere near the ah size of of Tennessee's wide receivers from my recollection of their stats. I feel like the Tennessee's wide receivers were much bigger.
00:32:00
Speaker
Yeah, I would agree with that. um So yeah, i think that this is ultimately going to come down to like, how nervous do you feel about, you know, our guarding Ryan Williams in the secondary?
00:32:12
Speaker
And I'm sure that, you know, Kalen DeBoer is probably going to be looking at, you know, their Tennessee's receivers were running free in the secondary, ah seemingly at will um at times.
00:32:26
Speaker
And um I imagine that they'll probably try to get try to get our guys moving in space um because that seems to be something that we're struggling with this year.
00:32:38
Speaker
yeah So I like Kirby off the bye week. um So I don't know. I have a feeling that they're going to have to figure that out pretty quickly because it could get out of hand early if if we can't figure out a way to stop Ryan Williams and stop that, you know, stop that passing attack.
00:32:56
Speaker
um ah What will come, what will, you know, ultimately help us is again on the defensive line, um getting that push in the trenches. So, I mean, SEC is one in the trenches every single weekend. And for Georgia, unfortunately, the the last couple of seasons here, you know, we just haven't had, know,
00:33:16
Speaker
that Jalen Carter, that Jordan Davis type character that's able to completely take over games up the middle. um I feel like we're getting there. We're still young along the defensive front. So um it's just one of those things where we just got to grow up fast.
00:33:32
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. I'm with you. And hey, those two guys you just mentioned are still taking over games and winning games on black field goals, return for touchdowns for the Eagles.
00:33:44
Speaker
What an amazing pick and scoop and score that was. That was unbelievable. I've got a buddy who's a big Eagles fan that i I texted him. I sent a Larry Munson like text, just three words, oh my God, and he knew what I meant.
00:33:58
Speaker
At any rate, yeah, no, I'm with you. I mean, and like back to the whole rushing thing. So Alabama is 105th in rushing in FBS at only 123 game. So like you said, line scrimmage game, think in general, what Kirby tries to do is shut down the run, right? Take, make them, make them one dimensional.
00:34:17
Speaker
And i I expect that to be the the same here. I'll shout out our buddy dog sets, Josh as well. Just talking about like what was happening against Tennessee and with those 50, 50 balls, they just kept hitting on them.
00:34:28
Speaker
But like over the long haul, you'll, you'll take those odds. um So also to your point of having the bi-week, having a ah week to work on that stuff. Yeah, man. get to the ball, back the ball down.
00:34:40
Speaker
I think we had some kind of like stumbles and stuff that messes up there as well. So, yeah, yeah, for sure. Yeah. yeah was i just, I just took a peek that Chris Brazil guy, um Tennessee's leading wide receiver is six, five.
00:34:55
Speaker
Okay. So definitely, definitely a big boy. um But most of their guys are about 200 pounds versus, you know, alabama Alabama's Alabama's guys are a little bit smaller.
00:35:07
Speaker
Okay.

Special Teams Analysis

00:35:08
Speaker
Okay. Cool. Uh, you talk, I got a one quick special teams thing, unless you had anything else. No, I think that I need to see Chris Cole take over this game.
00:35:21
Speaker
Right now he's our sack leader and we only have two sacks. um I would like to see Ellis Robinson play a much better game than he did in last in the last game.
00:35:32
Speaker
um And K.J. Bolden, I think that they can play they're they're capable of playing better. That secondary is much as much better than what the Tennessee game showcased and I think that we just kind of hit it hit it in a and an off week.
00:35:47
Speaker
um It's kind of ballooned some of our numbers I feel like um because I don't think that we are as bad as 300 yards passing on the defensive side. So I don't know. we'll see we'll see how the We'll see how those boys grow up because they got to grow up quickly. ah The entire defense, we've got star power across the board. we just need them to perform.
00:36:08
Speaker
Yeah, for sure. Okay. the one Tell me about special teams. Are they special? Well, actually there was one thing I realized that I forgot to mention that we should probably always talk about is who is Alabama's backup quarterback.
00:36:22
Speaker
A fair assessment. ah Austin Mack and Keelan. I don't know if it's Keelan. Keelan or Keelan. Russell. Apologies, ah Mr. Russell.
00:36:34
Speaker
But they are the ones who have gotten snaps. I think Russell is like russell is the freshman. um I think he's kind of like the knight dynamic one that people are excited about. I could be wrong, but Austin Max is sophomore.
00:36:47
Speaker
So they have not had much playing time so far this year, but always something to jokingly take into consideration when you play these guys. Just looking at the two, i don't know.
00:36:59
Speaker
they're They're both pretty big boys. ah Austin Max, 6'6", 235. Yeah. yeah But he looks a lanky 6'6". I don't know. Keelan Russell looks a lot like Julian Millarow, in my opinion, but...
00:37:12
Speaker
um Yeah, I don't know. I guess I guess we just need to we just need to make note that those are the backup quarterbacks for Alabama. Yeah, Russ Russell is like five star recruit.
00:37:23
Speaker
Mac transferred from Washington, actually, um with I believe. So I think I think Russell was the one that like the Bama fans are, know, he's the shiny new five star.
00:37:35
Speaker
He's the shiny toy. Okay. Hey, that was a Saban thing. It was a DeBoer. different Got it. Got it. All right. Yeah. so my my special teams. Special teams, Nugget, we always have to check and see, do they have an Australian punter?
00:37:49
Speaker
ah And they do not. So Alabama's punter. So they do not take special teams seriously, obviously. um So their punter is Blake Dowd. i will say, while he is not an Australian, he is a transfer from the Colorado School of Mines.
00:38:05
Speaker
The Colorado School of Mines? Yes. Okay. Yes. so I did not have that on my bingo card, Jim. I went to double check to make sure he wasn't Australian, and I learned that instead.
00:38:20
Speaker
ah He's averaging 47 yards per punt. I know Georgia george is on the has gotten us some guys on on the watch lists. Our special teams are number one in the country.
00:38:32
Speaker
Yeah, man. Uh, always a good payday. Dude, Thorson is so good. And I will say too, like, um, I saw down, actually, did you see Brett Thorson had a sorry Carter in his press conference this week in his media availability?
00:38:46
Speaker
Yes. I saw that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, but he, he was talking about Drew Miller and that he's kicking the the crap out of the ball, but he didn't say crap.
00:38:57
Speaker
Um, he would, I was thinking about it. He hous to about how, how well he was putting it. But so to me, the difference is like drew Miller, like, yes, he pointed the ball very well, but with Thorson, like they don't return it, you know, like that you don't get return yardage on Thorson. It's, it's pretty wild.
00:39:13
Speaker
So I feel like the hang time is so different with him. Yeah. I mean, if you're looking at facets to identify, you know, if you're looking at at facets to identify special teams would definitely be one of our strengths in this game.
00:39:28
Speaker
Yeah, for sure. ah Just to know their their kicker ah is Connor Talty. He's a sophomore. 13-13 on extra points, 3-4 on field goals on the year.
00:39:40
Speaker
That's what I got for the special teams, Jimmy. Jim, in the notes, um it says that Alabama is ranked 131st in kick return Is that correct? and kick return yards is that correct Looks like it.
00:39:52
Speaker
Looks like they have one kick return yard. but They're averaging one yard per kickoff return, I guess. ah Yeah, it seems it seems kind of seems kind of strange.
00:40:04
Speaker
They're probably catching all of them. like Yeah, yeah. um I don't know. that That's something that that sticks out. that That sticks out to me but okay as far as the special teams go.
00:40:17
Speaker
Nice, nice. Okay, cool. You want to hit the listener questions? Yeah, let's do it.

Sponsor Appreciation: Working Web Media

00:40:24

00:41:08
Speaker
All JP, we're going to kick it off as we always do with the Belding bonus. TMTMTM from our friend Brett Belding. First, how many losses can Alabama take before they fire DeBoer?
00:41:19
Speaker
His buyout is $63 million. dollars I don't think that they'll be firing him this season regardless of how they do. I don't think so either. Large buyout. And we've we've gone from week one fire him, you know, talk from the fan base to like, they're going to kill us this week. thing It's just like how the mind of the fan base shifts so quickly.
00:41:42
Speaker
So, but yeah, I'm coming with you. yeah I think that we can just pump the brakes. We're three weeks in We are their first SEC game, so...
00:41:53
Speaker
True. True. Good point. Then second one from Brett. Will we ever wear black jerseys in a game other than G day under Kirby smart. I'm not sure that we will, honestly.
00:42:04
Speaker
mean, we have in the past, so yeah, and but not since, not since COVID. So we had at some point we will, we had year one, year one, he did in his first year, did it. And then in COVID COVID season.
00:42:16
Speaker
So yeah, I'm just, my stance is now I'm just not going to worry about it. I'm not going to worry about it, but if I were being a little stitious, Mark Richt was at his press conference this week.
00:42:30
Speaker
That is true. that is mark Mark could have given him some whispers.
00:42:38
Speaker
He's like, you know, the way you the best way to do it is you come out in red, and then you go in and you change, and you come out black. See, see what we should do is we should start a GoFundMe. That's like, just build a war chest of recruiting money that we can all just raise money for. And the only catch is that Kirby has to give us the blackout.
00:42:59
Speaker
See what he says. Nice. Nice. All right. Brett ended off. See everyone in Athens on Saturday. Go dogs. ah Brett. Hope, hope we run into you on Saturday. I have a feeling we're going to run into a lot of people. i have a feeling it's going to be a long day.
00:43:14
Speaker
It's going be a long day. Hydrate, hydrate people. It's a, I did, I did my tea. I did my tea and honey today. Hug dog. Nice. It is a marathon, not a sprint. Reminder.

Listener Question: SEC Scheduling

00:43:28
Speaker
right, let's see. Next up 51 to seven GATA with the sec championship, putting in the playoff. Should the conference have a more uniformed conference schedule?
00:43:37
Speaker
Bama, Texas, A&M, Mississippi State have yet to play a conference game, while two teams have already played two. Seems like there should be more balance. i think that was I thought this was an interesting question because yeah we just had the the new conference schedule come out, um but this is like a different take on that. you know Conference schedule, you're looking at kind of like balance of who you're playing, difficulty, but he's talking about like balance during the season of when you're playing your league games.
00:44:02
Speaker
i I suspect some of this has to do with adding in the new school's and expansion and having contracts from non-conference games, you know, already. So maybe it'll change a little bit um as we get further into this, having Texas and um Oklahoma in the league, but I'm not sure. I don't think that's a a good question. Like, I don't know, do they mandate anything?
00:44:24
Speaker
Well, and having the nine conference games too. True, true. So hopefully that... This should normalize. mean, just based on the sheer numbers, like you're removing another game and inserting an SEC game. So just trickle that down the entire league. And then, you know, some of that, I'm sure that there'll be the one-off players couple teams that maybe are are still playing, you know, and uneven schedules or whatever here and there.
00:44:54
Speaker
And it's not, I suspect it's probably not going to be the same, although based on the schedule, this it's come out Bama probably will get favored in everything because the checks, the checks run through Birmingham.
00:45:11
Speaker
Cool. No, i think I think you're right. That makes sense. That makes sense. All right. Let's see. We hit a little stitious earlier. that That phrase came out. So we're just ready to hear from John Michael D. On the on the little stitious front, are we all that old compared to whoever thought a blackout was a good idea and they don't remember?
00:45:29
Speaker
I certainly will not be changing from my usual game day attire. However, I'm packing that in a change while out of town. ah Fire passion energy. Um, that was pretty funny. I will say that was, it I think Barstool, Georgia or whatever account was the first one to yeah be like, ah, blackout, which we knew was coming.
00:45:46
Speaker
I think the day yeah the Tennessee game was over, we knew it was coming or just kind of sitting there waiting for it. Um, but that, that tweet ultimately got deleted they because they got a lot of backlash from that. Um, we've got a lot of pushback and they deleted it.
00:46:00
Speaker
So rate ratioed as the kids say, Jim, they did get ratioed. They did it get ratioed. Yeah, i have a feeling that, well, you know, it was them and then Spike Squad was kind of like digging in on it, I feel like.
00:46:13
Speaker
Spike Squad, yeah, they like quote tweeted and like changed the graphic to say they were both supporting it. I think they kept their tweet up. I don't know. Maybe I just haven't been on Twitter as much, but I haven't heard as much since.
00:46:23
Speaker
Like there was an initial push and it seems to have somewhat dwindled, maybe. Although we have multiple questions about it. So maybe not. I mean, when a company like Barstool puts something out like that, it's hard to take it away. Yeah.
00:46:36
Speaker
Even if it was deleted, it's still out there because I've seen it screenshotted and you know the graphic I've seen posted elsewhere. like people were People were posting it. and and The internet is forever, guys. don't want If you don't want on the internet, someone's archived it somewhere.
00:46:52
Speaker
um Yeah. i'll I'll cover my bases and come red and black on. How about that? Oh, there you go. That'll work. That'll work. my My thing is, we might have to another question about this, but I'm just going to say like kind of like my stance on this now. And HugDog actually tweeted something to this effect.

Fan-Led Blackout Game Discussion

00:47:10
Speaker
yeah the The original blackout in 2007 against Auburn, that one was announced by the school. like Rick actually came to a press conference and said, the players want the fans to wear black.
00:47:22
Speaker
And then ever since then, i feel like we as the fans have wanted to recreate that and we have tried to recreate that. And I get it like you're you know a student in college. You want to do something fun. Like I get it. like But we keep kind of like asking for black o blackout, blackout.
00:47:35
Speaker
So my thing now is I'm just going to let the school say it. Like if the one from the school says it's a blackout, cool, I'll do it. But otherwise, I'm not going to be like trying to like push like a fan led thing.
00:47:47
Speaker
and don't know. That's kind of my stance on it. Okay, we can we can continue. Yeah, yeah. I wish that the school would just go ahead and knock it out and just say these are the games that we're going to do the uniforms.
00:47:58
Speaker
Yeah. Auburn will always be a blackout at home. Tennessee will be red pants on the road. Blackout or or red out, red out Florida, know, Florida, Georgia. um You know, whatever.
00:48:13
Speaker
Like, I think the red out actually makes more sense because we can drown out any Alabama colors. And that's something that I picked up from Chase Kelly was around like, you know, Bama fans are going to be there wearing crimson.
00:48:27
Speaker
If we as Georgia fans all wear red, it kind of mutes the crimson wearing fans in the crowd. So we get the overhead crowd shot. It's hard to tell that there's even ah any Alabama fans there because they're in the crimson. We're in the red. It kind of kind of blends in.
00:48:39
Speaker
So it's good for the for the look on the TV as well. Agreed. All right, John Michael D. added, also, you guys remember that one time we beat Alabama, kept winning and until we went back to back?
00:48:53
Speaker
Amazing tweet. That was awesome. I like that one, John McClendon. So good. So good. All right, let's see. Next up. Fletcher Proctor. Sorry for the latet late question.
00:49:04
Speaker
Fletcher, no need to apologize. All good. Got it in plenty of time. I was reading my new coffee table book about Aguilar starting the game 14 of 14, and it got me thinking. Forget blackout Sanford.
00:49:15
Speaker
What if we checkerboard Sanford? You hear that always works. Tennessee never loses when they do that. Dogs by 20.
00:49:24
Speaker
I love it. I'd take that too. Checkerboard is for Tennessee. Screw those guys. as As the hat says, Jim. That's right. and z i will go back to the super I will go back to a little stitious, Jim.
00:49:36
Speaker
I want to address a little stitious point. Okay. Wallpaper Wednesday on schedule. true True. Wallpaper Wednesday was out there. And when that wallpaper tweet hits, I guess.
00:49:48
Speaker
It's actually a pretty cool image too. I like it. Yeah, yeah, I did as well. Let's see. We've got Ryan Heinko next. What happens first? Dabo leaves Clemson to return to the Gumps or Pit Boss returns to Athens?
00:50:01
Speaker
I don't think Dabo is going anywhere. ah i don't think the Gumps want Dabo to come anywhere near near them. Unless he was maybe a coordinator. i don't know. Yeah. um I think pit Boss would be more likely to return to Athens, but I have a feeling that if they let him go, he's probably going to retire to the lake.
00:50:19
Speaker
Yep, 100%. hundred percent Shocking, we agree. I got a podcast. But i would not i would not mind him coming back as I would not mind him coming back as a as a consultant. like Like one Will Muschamp or i think we saw Chaney's actually at Tennessee now.
00:50:35
Speaker
He is. Yeah. Yeah. Yep. No, I'm with you. I'm with you. I mean, I've, the, the seat is hot for Devo. I will say that the seat is hot after last week.
00:50:47
Speaker
Um, bit of a struggle there in Clemson. So. I think the seat is, the seat was hot and is hot. And i think that he is fanning the flames and throwing gasoline and lighter fluid on it, on it himself with all the nonsense he's partaking in, in the media. It's like, you know, the first rule of holes, right? Yeah.
00:51:10
Speaker
Yeah. Agreed. I'm with you. I'll tell you who's i tell you who's like handling being on the hot seat the best is probably Billy Napier. I mean, his seat's probably the hottest of anybody in the country right now. I mean, you got the president of the university coming out and making statements. you got are I can't remember who came out and made a statement.
00:51:30
Speaker
yeah Whenever whenever you have a vote of confidence, it's probably not a good sign that you're in good good standing with the football program. Yeah, yeah. The dreaded vote confidence.
00:51:41
Speaker
Yeah. Let's see. Will Garland says, since it'll never happen, this feels like a safe hypothetical. The dogs come out of the tunnel in black jerseys.
00:51:51
Speaker
What is your initial gut reaction? I mean, I would be excited. like I think the stadium will literally unhinge. Yeah, I agree. I think it will be a ah replication of of Auburn blackout.
00:52:04
Speaker
Yep. Yep. I agree. agree. I know there's are like, oh, I don't want it, but whatever. like it The crowd goes crazy and would go crazy. I mean, they the they just look good.
00:52:15
Speaker
the The black jerseys look good, guys. like Yeah, they do. They do. um Let's see. We got like ah some analysis. We have some analysis done by Bubby Dean. Bubby Dean says, the Dogs are the only SEC team yet to force a fumble this season.
00:52:30
Speaker
Can our defense step up and force a fumble and create more opportunities for the offense? Get that ball. Get that ball, Bubby. i like it. He even provided like ah he he had a hyperlink to statistical backing of that.
00:52:43
Speaker
Okay. Okay. Man, that is kind of hard to, hard to fathom. um I guess maybe they're just not swiping at the ball as much. I mean, I feel like I've seen them try to grab the ball from players' hands. like you It's a Kirby defense. Their their emphasis is on the ball.
00:53:02
Speaker
They want the ball back. So I know it's not through lack of coaching. It's just, again, i think we got a lot of young guys that are going to eventually matriculate into NFL, you know, superstars, but they just got to, they just got to grow up.
00:53:16
Speaker
Yeah, I'm there with you. Also, I mean, you know, three games in, it is a small sample size. made Small sample, yeah. Generally, you would have thought it would happen by now, but get us give us a few more games in a row belt.
00:53:27
Speaker
Hey, there's no better game to start going doing it than the next one. For sure, for sure. Super excited to see Bubby. haven't seen him in a while.
00:53:38
Speaker
I know. I know. Bubby will be down from Yankee land, I believe, is was what the
00:53:45
Speaker
the comment. We got Yankee Doodle Dandy coming to town. Awesome. Awesome. Miss you, Bubby. We'll see you soon. James Lawson says, Georgia's had trouble generating consistent pressure this season, but I just watched a Wisconsin linebacker...
00:54:00
Speaker
but Wisconsin linebacker, but Bama center flat on his back last week. How do y'all feel about that matchup for Georgia's front? Hey, from your lips to from your lips to their executions.
00:54:10
Speaker
but Yeah. Yeah. I mean, and we we talk about so much like pressure is the great equalizer. I mean, that's, that's the way to keep that ball out of Ryan Williams hands is, is get, get pressure and get Simpson like off schedule.
00:54:23
Speaker
So We'd love it. We'd love to get some pressure. We'd love to get some, some sacks for the sacks. The sack challenge would be nice. So yeah, I'm with you. Let's see. Next up. We've got Rambo.
00:54:36
Speaker
Rambo has a very simple question for us, John. Are we nervous? are Quietly optimistic. Okay. I would say that we're not, I mean, I guess nervous is probably a fairly generic term. So I could say, yeah, we're nervous. It's a big, it's a big matchup.
00:54:52
Speaker
um I think the better questions is, is, are we scared? I read that as, are we scared? Hmm. um I'm not scared. I'm quietly confident.
00:55:04
Speaker
We have a good team. They've got a good team. um i think we've got a slightly better team. And I think that the, as we'll see in the numbers on what Vegas thinks about this game, we're not the only ones that feel that way.
00:55:17
Speaker
Yeah, I feel like I'm usually more nervous than I am. for when Take that for whatever it's worth. I'm not really nervous either.
00:55:28
Speaker
um I'm ready for this one. I'm i'm ready to to see these guys in our home stadium. I'm excited. Let's see AO. AO's up next. um Ryan Williams torched our butts last year. All the cushion and busted plays by the defensive backs against Tennessee does not do my heart good for Saturday. Make me feel better. I'll hang up and listen.
00:55:47
Speaker
Adam, I think probably just back what we said earlier around the the physicality of Tennessee's receivers. the The receivers for Alabama are are very different um size, stature, et cetera. So they're a little bit smaller.
00:56:02
Speaker
and think we kind of struggled against the the size of the Tennessee receivers, which is not not not what we'll see out of Alabama. and So hit on that earlier. Hopefully hopefully that makes you feel a little bit better heading Saturday.
00:56:14
Speaker
Yeah, I think that Ryan Williams is going to for sure be one of the One of the focal points for our for our de defensive backs, but like I said, I think they' they'll be they'll be coached up a little bit more. i i mean, i realize that hindsight's 20-20, but like you know we we got burned on some 50-50 balls that just didn't go our way, and nine times out of ten, i like our guys to make those plays.
00:56:35
Speaker
Yeah. Agreed. Let's see. We got Matt key up next. um Let's see. We, we talked blackout. So no, we should not go blackout. I think that's our stance.
00:56:47
Speaker
um To you think, you think there are still some things that have been held in the tank specifically for this game. We think about that, John. I know we talked about that a lot heading into Tennessee, like, yeah,
00:56:59
Speaker
were we holding back, you know, things you think there's a chance we've still done that to some extent heading into this one? Um, like, did we see some new wrinkles against Bama?
00:57:10
Speaker
I mean, they clearly had some, had some stuff left in the tank for the goal line situation. um they installed several different run looks. I think we heard, we heard, um ah shoot, Austin Brooks.
00:57:26
Speaker
yeah he He talked about how there were 11 new concepts that they had installed in this last game. so like Very clearly, they've got things up their sleeve that they can pull out. mean Shoot, we've been moaning about goal line offense. and Then for the two-point conversion, they bust out a play that worked to perfection.
00:57:45
Speaker
Um, like, why didn't we see that? or So I have a feeling that there's still stuff that they've got up their sleeve for certain situations and things like that, that they probably are, are sitting on.
00:57:56
Speaker
Um, and I do think that we probably will see them if the coaching staff feels like that they need to to put them out there. Yeah. Yeah. That makes sense. Um, any changes coming in the secondary? don't, I wouldn't expect that.
00:58:10
Speaker
I wouldn't expect that. Yeah, I wouldn't expect that either. i mean, the talent we got, we got such, we have a lot of talent. Like I said, it's, it's just, we're watching some young guys go through their lumps and you saw it with other special talent defenses, defenders in the past, but you know, you just kind of have to take your lumps on some of these. I mean, and you saw in the game, everyone, every single one of them that made mistakes ended up making up for it.
00:58:36
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, for sure. And then he said, anyone have a breakout game? That's a surprise. I'll tell you somebody I'm watching that it's just, mean, he's been out there. He's been playing a lot.
00:58:46
Speaker
um But it's someone that we didn't really talk about, like kind like in the season leading up, like in the preseason is Kyron Jones. um he's He's a guy i'm I'm keeping my eye on in the secondary. i think he's been playing well. ah So we're talking about on the defense or just in general?
00:59:00
Speaker
i I guess in general. I mean, Josh McCray, I would put him i would put him in the in that ilk as well. But he showed that he could tote the rock in tough situations and um and put us over the goal line, literally.
00:59:15
Speaker
He in Tennessee. So I would put Josh McCray in that and that vein as well. That's a good one. That you don't. That is a surprise.
00:59:26
Speaker
um I'm trying to think of anyone else that would be like a particularly big surprise. I mean, you and I have been talking about Peanut. um You know, he's he's been like right there.
00:59:37
Speaker
So close. We've been so close from break to breaking one. And at some point, and someone's going to break one. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. man he He hits the hole so fast. Like his acceleration is off the charts.
00:59:50
Speaker
Yeah. All right. Let's go to a boss dog, TJ Whitten. So I heard Josh Pate talk about being a little stitious earlier this week, which brings up the question, what are y'all superstitious about a little stitious about and not stitious about when it comes to the dogs? Yeah.
01:00:07
Speaker
um As I recall, I think you tagged John Michael D in the replies and there was some commentary about the like the my stance on like attire that I got from from Hunter.
01:00:20
Speaker
um I will say and so basically, know, it's like the oh, do you always wear the same hat? you always wear the same this and the same that? And like what I've adopted from Hunter is like your game day attire should never be completely the same. Like you should always change at least one one thing.
01:00:36
Speaker
So that has helped me ah because I used to be superstitious about that. Like I have to wear the same polo every game, you know, whatever. and So it's helped in that sense, but it's also hurt because now I'm like on the opposite. I'm like, wait, what did I wear last game? Like I have to wear something different.
01:00:50
Speaker
ah So I kind of have to think about it a little more. So even though it makes it sound like I'm not stitious, I still am.
01:01:00
Speaker
i um i mean and I may just wear whatever you want, but I do get into... like I am wrestling with the fact that I've worn the same polo to the to both the games that I've been to at home.
01:01:14
Speaker
And I'm talking about wearing a polo that will satisfy both the blackout and the not blackout crowd. Yeah. And I also did get a new belt. um So we'll see.
01:01:27
Speaker
ah Yeah, I would say just, yeah, I guess it's generally, generally the attire. um i But when we're at home too, like we always make bean dip, you know, we got that stuff going on. So there's a, I guess there's a few things.
01:01:41
Speaker
I have my spots that I like to sit in around the house as well. So that's probably about it. I definitely do. I will do a hat change or a wardrobe change at halftime if needed if I'm at home. So I always threw that in there as well.
01:01:55
Speaker
Let's go to a friend of the show, Tim Riley. Defensive line needs to clamp down to get some sacks. How many are needed for a successful night? Fire, passion, energy is needed, and we must rush for more than 150 yards. What do y'all think?
01:02:06
Speaker
See in Athens. Good dogs. Yeah, Tim, hopefully hopefully we see you at the tailgate again. It was good to see you the opener. mean, I don't know that like there's a specific number of sacks that we need to get to be successful.
01:02:19
Speaker
ah To me, it's more like impacting the game. I think it's just more on like pressuring the quarterback in general, even if you don't get home. Just making him uncomfortable, I think, is what's most important. I would agree. We need pressure. We need pressure. And we also need if if we don't get pressure, at least hold the line, because what I don't want to see is us getting pushed into the into the secondary kind of thing.
01:02:44
Speaker
ah That's when linebackers get blocked inadvertently. you know, you get blocking crisscrossing receivers. All of a sudden, a a defensive back gets blocked. when the gets picked or whatever i mean you look go go back and look at the at the last play in sennessee i mean our offensive line pushed them into the into the end zone and that was partially how we were able to get in um yeah i mean just hold the line defensive line does need to clap down i'm i'm i'm looking at them to being um the biggest problem for the defense i mean both
01:03:18
Speaker
I hate to say it, and I never thought that I would because Kirby has put such an emphasis over the years on on those positions, the defensive line and offensive line. um But both of these lines are noticeably off from what we were used to.
01:03:33
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, I think that's i think it's a fair statement. Um, and then the rush, I mean, the rushing yards rushed for 150 yards. mean, this is one of those games where traditionally the team that wins on the ground wins the game.
01:03:46
Speaker
So I definitely agree. Need to need to run it, run the dang ball as they say. Yeah. Agreed. Right. Let's hit the next one. Fireball.
01:04:00
Speaker
Jason Huggins, the hug dog checking in It gets no bigger. It's our time. My keys. Jason has come in with his keys to the game. I will now read to you, JP. Jason Huggins, keys to the game.
01:04:12
Speaker
One, we must create an environment that causes penalties and mistakes. So yes, be there, be be early, be loud. 100% agree with that Two, our lines of scrimmage need to win, especially at right tackle on ah offense and edge on defense.
01:04:27
Speaker
Three, win special teams. Four, Kirby can't see ghosts. Make them quit. Five, contain Williams and cut branch loose. Love it, Jason. I agree with all those.
01:04:39
Speaker
um The one that jumps out to me the most is number four, Kirby can't see ghosts. um I know we talked about this is the first time he's gotten to see them at home. it I will say it has felt like in the past he has.
01:04:52
Speaker
feel like it's fair to say he's coached differently against this team than other teams. um I'm hoping that the hope in the home environment changes that and he can just cut loose and do his thing against these guys. Yeah.
01:05:06
Speaker
Yeah, I agree. The environment that creates penalties, um that's on us, the fans. That's the only thing that we can control. So if we go out and light it up, ah you know everything else will take care of itself. Because ah trust in kirby we say in Kirby, we trust in these big in these big games.
01:05:26
Speaker
um we were in a whole real bad last game against these guys, and we almost had the biggest comeback in the history of the NCAA. um And we were one play away from from doing that.
01:05:39
Speaker
And like I said, in Kirby, we trust. I think they're going to put the guys in the best positions to win the game. And i honestly think it all comes down to number two. So if we can win the if we can win the line of scrimmage,
01:05:54
Speaker
I like our chances of, of winning. Um, they have not seen a complete team like us all season long. Um, and you know, the teams that they have played on offense, Florida state, you know, they got embarrassed by, and we're not too far off from, from Florida state. I mean, Florida state's number one offense in the country right now. And Georgia is sitting at 24,
01:06:22
Speaker
um Tennessee had a good offense and we were able to figure them out, put them off on their game. i don't know, man. I like our chances here and and and you should too.
01:06:33
Speaker
Yeah. um I think the one thing I'll add on the environment is, you know, so last year when we got to our night games later in the season, ah we saw Josh Brooks and and team add some new things to the environment, Sanford stadium with the fireworks and,
01:06:49
Speaker
Came, you know, came around first time we've ever seen that in Sanford Stadium. So, i mean, we've had them in the other games, too, but those really are awesome at night. um So i I expect that the Georgia event staff ah is is ready to make another awesome nighttime primetime, you know, raucous environment that Bama is going to be walking into.
01:07:13
Speaker
So be watching for that as well. Yeah, you saw the we have we have the the wristbands that are going to be, they're going do some kind of digital wristbands, right? Yeah, it looks like there's going to be ah some some new some new stuff added sir for this game.
01:07:27
Speaker
So excited to see how that turns out. Cool. All right, JP, we got one more. are you ready? Let's do it.
01:07:41
Speaker
My God, a freshman. Trying to put glasses on. 90-80. Who, brother? All
01:07:49
Speaker
right. It is time for Coach Trio Bill's Hoover Unders Alabama edition. Let's see. We are tied, right? believe we are tied. We went into the bye week tied after the Tennessee game.
01:08:01
Speaker
don't Coin toss? Who who goes first? Who goes first? We're tied overall? Yeah. Yeah. We're tied. Uh, I'll, I'll give the honors to you, Jim. Okay. I guess, I guess if we say from the tie, i was in front before. Yeah. Yeah. You were in front before. So I, so I keep the honors. Okay.
01:08:18
Speaker
right. So, um, I'll go first. So we're going to start off with the offense as we always do. Gunner Stockton over, under 275 passing yards.
01:08:29
Speaker
I mean, he just went over that for the Vols on the road. I'm going to, I'm going to say he's going to do that. think it's bam at home. I'm going to take the over. and I've got him on the under. and Okay.
01:08:40
Speaker
Right over to you. ah Georgia running backs with a carry over under a three and a half. I'm going go with the over on that one, Jim. I'm with you. I actually agree on that. And then players with a catch over under eight and a half.
01:08:54
Speaker
I'm going to go over. We still like to spread that ball around. Yeah, I'm going to go over. i looked at that at first and i I thought it was wide receivers, but it's players.
01:09:05
Speaker
It is. is. Okay, let's see. Over to you Flipping over to the defense. First one is over under 280 passing yards for Ty Simpson.
01:09:19
Speaker
fell down I think he's going to go over that. Okay. Okay. um i guess i'll ah agree I guess I'll agree. I'll agree. I don't want to agree.
01:09:30
Speaker
strategic And then over under tackles for a loss by the Georgia defense over under sit at four and a half. Oh

Over/Under Interceptions Debate

01:09:40
Speaker
man, that would be delicious.
01:09:42
Speaker
That maybe this is a want, but I'm saying over. I also got them on the over. Okay. And then riding on the defense with you over under two and a half interceptions. Is that to me? o i said it wrong.
01:09:54
Speaker
I was about to say, hold on a second. My notes say different. Yes. The screen says 2.5. I mess it up. It's just 0.5. Over, under 0.5. Shenanigans! Shenanigans! I'm trying. I on the official 0.5 line, I have it on the over.
01:10:05
Speaker
Okay. I promise I didn't do that on purpose.
01:10:10
Speaker
Oh. i have on the official point five line i have it on the i have it on the over
01:10:20
Speaker
oh i promise i didn't do them
01:10:25
Speaker
I'm like, I actually made notes this time, Jim. So I have everything. I made all my picks. I made all my picks beforehand. Oh, too good.
01:10:36
Speaker
All right. I actually, i didn't do the picks beforehand, but I'm going to agree with you though. I think we get one. I think we get one from this guy. Okay. Okay. ah So let's see. So now it's to me. Hopefully I got these.
01:10:48
Speaker
Was it, did I write these down correctly? I'm not sure. We'll find out. um Special teams, Peyton would ring field goals made over under two and a half. Is it to you?
01:10:59
Speaker
This is me. Yeah, I'm going to stick with what i thought to myself beforehand. I'm going to go under just on volumes, kit because we're going to score touchdowns, John. I've got the under on that one as well.
01:11:10
Speaker
Okay. All right. And then this one, almost reached out to Coach, because I'm not 100% sure. the ri i know. i know what he's talking about. Okay. So over under

Emotional Support Items Anecdote

01:11:20
Speaker
Bama players with stuffed animals over under.5.
01:11:24
Speaker
I have it on the ah over. Okay. What is the reference here? what I feel like I'm missing something. So they have, um think it's Ryan Williams, um which honestly, dude, like Ryan Williams is on like a bit of a sophomore slump or whatever.
01:11:41
Speaker
um But Ryan Williams pulled up into the season opener with a stuffed Tyrannosaurus Rex, I believe it was. um And i can't remember what I'm trying to verify because I didn't think about this ahead of time.
01:11:59
Speaker
What I'm trying to verify is um if it was one of these stuffed animals like my daughter has. like There's these like weighted stuffed animal things that you can buy Target.
01:12:13
Speaker
And I think that it's one of those, but I don't know that they have they make us a T-Rex one. But anyway, he was pulling it in. um And I don't know if there was any kind of like, know, he was doing in honor of someone, but...
01:12:26
Speaker
That's like a thing. like the youths The youths are are carrying stuffed animals around. okay Emotional support stuffed animals. There's also like a ah sub we off rail there's also a sub category that they sell, which I thought that my client was pretty amazing in creating one, and I don't have it with me. it's in might They've been usurped from from my domicile, but um the emotional support dumpster fire. It's like this little knitted thing and you're supposed to

Game Day Logistics and Social Plans

01:13:00
Speaker
like squeeze it or whatever. And it's like, i don't know, but there's apparently a emotional support fruit and vegetables that the kids are buying at school um that are similar. They have like a little, like, I think like Camden got one that was an emotional support apple.
01:13:17
Speaker
Dude, the things you learn. Oh my God, a podcast. so You never get to have that. And I think my daughter has an emotional support. Broccoli. um Yeah. Anyway. As one does.
01:13:27
Speaker
as well As one does. As the one does. Yeah. right. Oh, well, with that, I have to go hit the over. appreciate Appreciate the background. i I saw this and was going look into it and I didn't. and So i'm glad I'm glad that you had that background for me. What he should have what a should he done what he should have done is over under shades of nail polish nail polish color.
01:13:48
Speaker
Could have. Okay. All right, coach. um Thank you as always for doing that. And we'll see you Friday actually this week. So we'll see Friday along with every other man, person, man, woman, and child and and in the state of Georgia, it feels like, well, we'll see them on Saturday, but we'll see coach on Friday.
01:14:09
Speaker
That's true. That's true. Friday. I'm sorry. I forgot about Friday. Yep. cool i live day-to-day jim that's right that's right hey i i'm just making sure you you remember oh i i i'm not forgetting that one uh awesome all right um let's do the picks do the predictions for this game so if

Detailed Game Predictions

01:14:30
Speaker
we look at like the the line stuff so The line is Georgia is favored by three.
01:14:38
Speaker
ah According to odd shark, the over under is 52 and a half. That gives you an implied three or three and a half. Did the line dropped? It moved. It was three and a half. Now three. um Okay.
01:14:49
Speaker
That gives you an implied score of Georgia, 27.75 Alabama, 24.75. Okay. to alabama twenty four point seven five Um, the predicted score from our truck, our shark has Georgia 32.2 to uh, looked at Parker Fleming's, uh, CFB graphs.
01:15:07
Speaker
He does have Alabama slightly favored in this one. He's got, Alabama like 24 ish. Let's it 25 to 2021. He's got like a four point spread there.
01:15:18
Speaker
um I ran our scoring impact numbers. Take this with a grain of salt. Super small sample size, but that's got Georgia 31 and a half to Alabama 25 and a half. um So, yeah, I don't know where your where your head's at. I don't if you want to.
01:15:34
Speaker
You got something prepped or you want me to go? No, I'll let you go. Okay. I mean, so for me, I was saying, I feel like I'm kind of like oddly calm about this one. Like I'm usually like freaking out.
01:15:48
Speaker
Um, we're heading in to play these guys. Um, but I, I kind take it back to like what you said earlier, John, like, I think these are two these are two good teams.
01:15:59
Speaker
I think we're a little bit better. um You can do all the all the streak stuff, the Kirby 1-6 against Bama, all that stuff. But I'm relying on the 33 home win streak on the line.
01:16:18
Speaker
When you add the My Got a Podcast in person, dogs on top, 31-24. I like it. um like it I am going to go with, again, i think that we i think that we control the game um enough.
01:16:35
Speaker
I don't know that we're going to be able to contain Ty Simpson. His numbers just jump out pretty sharply. And having seen Joey Aguilar, Tennessee's a good offense. Yeah.
01:16:47
Speaker
I just think that they're gonna they're gonna he's going to get his

Alabama's Season Performance Review

01:16:50
Speaker
yards, basically. It's just a matter of can you contain him. um So i look I look to that as something that I feel confident that we will sort out because we were able to sort it out with but Tennessee.
01:17:03
Speaker
um I've got the dogs 27 to 25. 28, 25. nail-biter. Okay. 28, 25. twenty five twenty eight twenty five nail butter yeah and twenty eight twenty five Yeah, I feel like, i don't know, are the way we're thinking about this is so much different probably than like after week one.
01:17:24
Speaker
But I think we've kind of been saying around, you know, like they're not going to look like they look against Florida State. I'll tell
01:17:33
Speaker
you that. They will look different um for sure. I think we'll we'll get their best shot. um But I think we'll be ready. I think Kirby will have them ready. Yeah, I mean, I think that dumb Yeah, I think that Kirby will have him ready.
01:17:48
Speaker
I just kind of look to the offenses that they've played. So they've played Florida state, Florida state's the best team that they've played and they got their bell rung by Florida state. Yeah. um You've got Wisconsin and Louisiana Monroe.
01:18:03
Speaker
Their offenses are worse than ours. um So like, I don't know that, I don't know that there's a really good sample size for Alabama right now. It kind of goes back to the, you know, small sample size,
01:18:16
Speaker
The one really good team that they played, um they got absolutely shellacked. um And it was on the road, too. And it was on the road. um You know...
01:18:29
Speaker
I think that there might be some more to the 50, you know, for the 52 to seven. um I think that that that question about the schedule balance is probably worth looking at overall. Cause I look at like a team like Florida,
01:18:47
Speaker
Man, they've been they' they they've gone through the ringer with their schedule already. And here you have Alabama. They haven't even really played anybody except for Florida State. And the one team that they played has been kind of destroyed them. So I look to you know i look to see. maybe Maybe I should go back and adjust my over-under on Ty Simpson. But I don't know.

College Game Predictions

01:19:10
Speaker
I just feel like that they're going to get their yards, but I feel like we're going to contain them. But, yeah.

but yeah ah got it and I've it in a close one. Vegas knows. yeah True. All right, want to look at some games around the country with the coaches pick them? Let's look at the pick them, Jim.
01:19:26
Speaker
All right, first up, we've got number four, LSU at number 13, Ole Miss. Ole Miss is favored by one and a half. This is a three thirty game on ABC.
01:19:38
Speaker
ah I'm going to take Ole Miss, actually, in this one. Give me the fighting hunters in that one. Okay. i don't i don't I don't trust LSU. Yeah, I think you know we're all well, not we so much, but people were very high on LSU after that Clemson win over Clemson, and that one doesn't exactly look the same as it did week one. and with yeah um The next one is Auburn at number nine, Texas A&M.
01:20:07
Speaker
Texas A&M favored by six and a half points. That

one is also three three i think that's interesting. We had two games at 3-30 there. um This one's on ESPN. CBS would never. Seriously.
01:20:21
Speaker
um I'm so surprised. I think it's kind of crazy that Texas A&M is so high. um And then also, I will say, think Auburn's pretty good. I mean, they had a kind of a tough result against Oklahoma last week.
01:20:34
Speaker
That was a really, really hard-fought, close game. so we're Was that a home or away? I can't recall. That was at Oklahoma. It was at Oklahoma. Okay. Yeah.
01:20:45
Speaker
I've got the Aggies in this one, Jim. Okay. Okay. I went through that whole thing, but I'm going to take the home team as well. All right. Then we go, we've got number 15, Tennessee heads to Mississippi state at 4 15 PM. Eastern on sec network, Tennessee favored by seven and a half.
01:21:09
Speaker
um Only seven and a half. That's what I say. I feel like that's kind of low. Yeah. Although Mississippi state has looked Starkville is a weird place to play, man. Yeah. Yeah.
01:21:20
Speaker
And you know, I'm in Tennessee. Although I say hangover from Georgia, they had a game last week, but they beat UAB. They did. They did what they do to a small school again last week. Right. mean, I guess I got to go with Tennessee.
01:21:33
Speaker
I'll be picking UT Knoxville on that one. Okay. ah Then we go to Arkansas. We got number 22, Notre Dame, four and a half point point favorite at Arkansas.
01:21:45
Speaker
Nooner, 12 p.m. on ABC. That'll be, what, 11 local time out there in Arkansas, I believe. What you think? You think Pit Boss can give Notre Dame yet another another l I'd like that to happen, but i got Notre Dame in this one.
01:21:58
Speaker
ah Notre Dame sends Sam Pittman home and to Athens. There you go. I like it. I like it. That was good. All right, because we're picking all the same games and

01:22:32
Speaker
Penn State's favored by three and a half at home over Dan Lanning in the Ducks. I got Penn State on that one You do? Okay, I'm going to go with Lanning. I'm going to take Dan. I'm taking Dan Lanning over James Franklin.
01:22:45
Speaker
That's the basis of my pick. Got it. Cool. I'm taking the home team on that one. I mean, I'm assuming there'll be a whiteout as they do there. was just about to say, is it is it going to be a whiteout?
01:22:59
Speaker
Yeah, I think it is. and think it is. they announced They announced those things officially.

01:25:42
Speaker
but yeah i have my way of doing i i cut corners isn't well we'll Well, we'll have the luxury of having the famous panda live and in person to make her a panda's famous bean dip.
01:25:55
Speaker
That could be an option too. Could be. Could be. Okay. Okay. We'll put glasses on it. We'll put glasses on it. put glasses on it. um I think i had made a mention of of doing something, a dessert for for the tailgate. So I might bring something for, might bring something for the tailgates.
