Today, we're talking to Dusty about New Year's resolutions. First off, hi Dusty. It's been a while since I've spoken. It has been a while since I've seen you. How are you? It's good to see you. I'm good. How are you? I'm good. Very settled into my New Year routine, I think. So far, I'm sure that's going to change somewhat. Yeah, all good. So tell me what your New Year routine is.

much like my last year's routine, which is what I've, as you know, I've retired three years ago, but since then I've been trying to prioritize sleep. So continue to get good night's rest, work out, or worry about physical fitness, eating decently. And then on top of that, just kind of trying to hang out with friends when I can. And I've got my son every other week, so trying to be a better dad.

So those are all things that I'm kind of working on, not just specific to this year, but over the last few years and I'm sure into the next few years will be very similar. And you've got goals. You've always got goals. I do. You do. I know for one, like you have a goal to wake up at 4.30 in the morning every day and go run for like 15 miles, right?

Emerald Epic & 2024 Goals

So is running one of your new year's resolutions? I know you ran all last year and probably the year before that. So I signed up for the Emerald Epic this year and I'm excited to do that. That's in August, the first weekend in August. And it's a 26 mile bike ride, mountain bike ride, followed by a 13 mile run the following day.

Do you know how many people would start and then just never like do the first part of the bike ride? And then just after that first day is like, no, I'm good. I'm just going to go to the pub today. I'd be interested in knowing those stats. I bet they have them. Like people who sign up and start, but then don't show up the second day. That's not going to be you, right? Oh, no. Okay. No, I'm committed. I'm going to do this thing. I signed up with my friend Des, so we're both going to do it, which would be a really fun thing. Is your goal just to finish?

Mm-hmm. My goal is to finish his goal is to podium. Like top three. Is that a, is that the definition of podium? I don't know. Good luck to him. What does he run with you in the morning? Well, he is. So I think we're going to do another race together as an eye in February. And that one, you can actually like combine your race totals to podium. So, but that one's just running. So I think we can actually podium that one.

Because usually at the end of the year, we start thinking about New Year's resolutions. Is this something that, is this a goal that you decided to pursue because you wanted to do a New Year's resolution? Or is it something that you would have done anyway?

I probably would have done it anyway. I think for me, what I did was at the end of last year, I started thinking about how I want this year to look. So what are some big things that I want to do in 2024? And ultimately what I decided is that I want to take six local trips.

for non-local trips. I wanted to do something big physically, which was this Emerald Epic. I wanted to finish the marathon that I started last year and only ran 15 miles of. So I signed up for that. I booked a two week trip to Spain. And then I went through and did some kind of goal setting or thinking about the people that I want in my life for 2024.

and what kind of energy I want to bring. So I made a list of the people that are really important to me and kind of planned out, you know, how often I want to keep in touch with them and what that looks like. And, and this is the point where you take your list and you put it up against the screen. And so it's the cameras that they can all see who no longer matters to you. Is that true? My name's not on there. You're on my list. Oh, really was my core way of asking if I'm still on the list.

Yeah, you made the list. You didn't make the to visit list. But we visited because you need to come to Longmont. I agree. So you've got travel, travel, something physical and determining what people you're going to surround yourself with or have more influence of or from energy I want in my life.

Yeah. And then I also had some habit goals. So like daily routines kind of thing. That part always makes me a little nervous because I feel like people drop off the bucket pretty quick. Um, you know, you get excited about doing these new routines and then you just don't stick to them. But I did some of that. And then I also, um, set some financial goals. So I kind of went around the whole spoke, you know, spiritual, physical, did you not do this?

I do a lot of reflection at the end of the year in terms of how i feel like those things when and then i start planning because i want to know how my next year is gonna go and i think you can always prepare for that and i think when you.

Think about life like a wheel and has different spokes so i don't wanna go all in on physical goals and forget about the fact that i am still a human being and i have other goals that are not physical or diet related or.

So I always reflect on how the last year went, what I didn't get enough of, what I want to do more of, what I did too much of so that I can make adjustments going into the next year. I do feel like dry January is a big thing for most people. Are you doing dry January?

Carnivore Diet & Health Journey

It has been very nearly dry. I don't, I don't want to like change gears too much here, but I think it was the 23rd of December. I went and got an in-body scan done because I wanted to start measuring my body fat, weight, you know, all that kind of stuff over time so that I can continue to improve physically. And at the same time, I'm not sure how I stumbled into it, but I started seeing videos on the carnivore diet. Are you familiar with that? Mm-hmm.

And so, since then, roughly since then, I've been eating primarily beef, red meat, ribeyes, chuck roasts, that kind of thing. And I have had some carbs that have been extremely low and only like very recently in the last few days, primarily because

Also on top of doing the carnivore diet just this last week decided I was gonna do a water only fast for three days and I so I started it and I got a glucose meter to monitor glucose and A day and a half into my water only fast I measured it and well I measured before and it was like right at 70 which is like at the low end of normal from what I understand and

Your that's normal for fasting it a day and a half into it it dropped to 53 which is I think hypoglycemic levels so I was like oh and so I quickly of course googled like is this bad cuz I don't want to like faint or pass out and I was feeling a little off but so at that point I was like

I had to really think about is it worth passing out for something. I mean, you know, I'm not in terrible shape and whatever gain I might be, whatever benefit I might be going for for this 3-day water fast, is it really worth hitting my head on the floor or passing out. So I did eat a little bit of carbs then to get my sugar back up. I didn't test after that but I felt fine.

but still primarily red meat. Basically no vegetables, just beef, ground beef, chicken if you want to. There's different varieties of this carnivore diet. So far so good. I think I went to Oaxaca in December for a week and the food is there. It's amazing. It doesn't matter where you go. It could be a hole-in-the-wall bar, pub, or whatever. The food's amazing and I think I must have put on

I don't know, a couple pounds at least. But since late December to now, which is about a month ago, a little less than a month, I have definitely lost weight and my midsection has tightened up a little bit. So, so far, so good. It appears the trend is in the right direction. So I'll stick to that a little bit. Today, I'm actually going to go get a follow-up and body scan done. We'll see what the results are so far. But my goal for this year physically is at least

Body-wise is 190 pounds of sub 10% body fat. And last in-body scan, I think I was at 186 pounds and about 13% body fat. So I don't think it's unreasonable. But if anybody's tried to go from 13 to 10 or below, your body really wants to fight you to keep that fat on for all the right reasons, for health reasons too.

We'll see how it goes. I think I'm probably at least another percent down just in the last few weeks due to diet change and some physical stuff that I've been doing when working out. So we'll see. And we'll continue to adjust that as time goes by. Do you like the way that you're feeling?

I do. So I think, you know, I had back surgery, I had back problems for a number of years and finally had back surgery and that cleared a lot of it up. But I would say within just a few days of just going need only, I really did feel better. I still felt lethargic I think is because you go through that initial carb.

No, you don't have any carbs. So where's your energy coming from? And you haven't shifted over to where your body is burning fat. Right? Isn't that what they call it is a keto flu where your body is shifting. You feel like crap and you just know you have to get through it to get to the other side.

I didn't really experience too much of that. I had already been, I usually don't eat a lot of carbs and junk anyway, so I probably experienced less of that than the average person would going through the same thing. But still, you do experience things, everybody's different. But for me, it wasn't that bad of a shift. Just generally, I felt better, little small aches and pains, like I usually every few days get something tied up in my neck. I haven't felt that in a month, or I haven't felt that since.

Even though I had back surgery, my back feels way better. I still sometimes get tightness in my lower back. That's pretty much gone. So, of course, I look at YouTube videos and do research on all this stuff or whatever research is considered these days.

And one reason to believe that it's helping is because it's something called an elimination diet. So that's where you just continuously take things out and then that could possibly be causing inflammation or pain or, or, or, or. And then just adding, once you kind of get a baseline of feeling okay or better than okay, you start adding things back in and then you can, you should be more able to pinpoint what food is bothering you or what food you're reacting negatively to.

So i haven't really added much food back in so so far so good i don't expect that i would stay on chronobore forever although some people do it with great results but i probably add in some kind of carbs because i do enjoy working out and i just don't have the same energy as i did before in the gym.

when you say you don't have the same energy like you're not lifting as much you're not like tell me what that means. Yeah so as far as the actual amounts lifted it's fine but it's the duration of the workouts so. I've been trying to hit when i go to the gym i hit ten thousand try to hit ten thousand steps on the treadmill going at four percent incline at four mile per hour.

It usually takes about an hour and twenty minutes for me to get to that and then from there I go either do pull-up push-ups depending on what day it is, some legs, a hack squat type stuff and then onto the other workout stuff like dumbbell workout or bench press or machines, whatever those things are.

So normally if you're doing cards like i have no problem getting through all that and feeling really big pumped strong when you leave the gym but now especially after doing the ten thousand i mean it is an hour and a half of walking on the treadmill so i do understand that that is taking some of the energy away especially whatever's in your current bloodstream.

And you're less likely to have energy to go to the woods. I understand that's part of it and that's probably not just diet based. However, I do find myself, once I do a few workout, a few things with weights, I'm just, I'm done, I'm over and ready to go. And because of my goal right now is lose body fat percentage, I don't think that I'm, I don't think that's really hurting me.

I don't think that's deterring my goals because of diet and because of the additional 10,000 steps a day while still doing some weights. I'm sure I'm in a body fat burning mode, so I'm still going towards my goal. But personally, I just like to feel strong and look strong, and I think that aspect might be suffering just a little bit.

But one day I'll put in carbs, maybe a sweet potato and get some energy back. Sweet potatoes are the best. Have you ever heard of Whole30? I have heard of it, but go ahead and tell me about it. It's very similar to this elimination diet where essentially you're just eating whole foods. So you eat whole foods, you eat three meals a day, you limit your fruit intake. So ideally you're going to have less than two servings of fruit a day.

And then you focus your meals on things like you are currently doing, right? Like it's meat and vegetable. And the whole goal is to reduce inflammation, which is potentially what's happening with you on the carnivore diet where you don't have as much inflammation. And as a result, then everything is feeling better.

I think there's a lot of, you know, I guess it's Whole30 like some type of a low carb-ish diet because you said reduce fruits, clearly fruits have carbs, sugars, so is that a type of low carb diet?

It's really just to focus on eating whole foods and you can't have any processed foods. So no sugary drinks, no diet sodas, nothing from a box, it's all whole foods, which ultimately is a paleo-ish, low-carb type of diet. Is that what you're doing? Is that why you know so much about it? Have you experienced with it?

I have done it. I've done it quite a few times. I'm not currently doing it because I don't have a kitchen, so that makes it really hard not to eat any processed foods. But it's the way that I like to eat, and it's the way that my body performs at its best. So when I'm eating that way, it's harder to over-consume. It's easier to run. You know, you can kind of go forever, which I really like.

So that's something he's currently working on this year is just having more balance and not. For people out there that can become all consumed with a physical pursuit, they know that it might be addicting. So you might not feel like yourself if you don't run for a day.

And my goodness you're certainly not gonna go for two days without running and i was just talking to my friend jeff yesterday about how when he used to run if he wasn't around six miles he would be like i might as well not even go out running because it's you know.

hardly anything. And you can kind of get into that mindset where it's hard to find balance and it's hard to say, okay, I'm not going to go out and do this thing every single day. So Dez has been very proactive in supporting that goal of balance, of finding balance and being more empathetic and having a little bit more self-love.

I have friends that are certainly pursuing experience goals. So I know that they're going to be very supportive with us doing more experiences this year. So I know I had asked you if next week we could move our recording to Thursday, because we're going to do an experience. We're going to hang out. We also have a potluck planned every Tuesday. The trip that I planned to Spain I did with a couple of friends. So they are certainly being very supportive in that aspect.

I'm going on a cruise with a bunch of other friends, which is another thing that's pretty amazing. I'm hopefully going to visit Georgia. So that will be fun. Also very supportive. So I do think my friends are going to be helping me with keeping to my goals. And I actually have an accountability buddy who we shared what our goals are. And we just check in with each other every day to say, hey, did you do the thing?

Like, did you follow your morning routine? Did you follow your evening routine? How are you on your work goals? So, um, this was something that he and I did back in actually must've been 2016. Uh, he and I were like our accountability buddies at work and we would just check in, see how we were doing. We signed up for a race together and he reached out at the end of last year and was like, Hey,

Would you be my accountability partner again this year? This is what I'm working on. And so we did like an hour long brainstorming session. We laid out what our goals are, and then we just check in with each other with a quick text. So you really got formal with your New Year's resolutions. I did. In our brainstorming session, did you have a whiteboard, popcorn coffee? Sticky notes. Lots and lots of sticky notes. You know.

And you've also got money goals. So would you be willing to share what those are or why they're? Because you're good with money. You're on the right trend line. You're going to get there. So what things are going on in your money world that needed the additional focus.

Career Change & Financial Independence

So this year I am hoping to switch careers and start selling real estate. And so one of my money goals is to sell a million dollars worth of real estate in 2024. That is one big financial money goal. So are you going to get your real estate license?

Yep. So my goal is to hang it. And I have been talking to different brokers here in Colorado to determine what office I want to work with. Do you have to, when you're doing your real estate license, do you have to do commercial? Do you have to segment it to decide what you want to do? Or is it just a general real estate license? Nope. You have to decide if you're going to do commercial or residential. And you're going to... I think I'm going to start with residential and then quite possibly move over to do some commercial work.

Is this something that you've thought of just recently or is this something like you were 21? It's been in the works because I love real estate. I love.

I can get lost in that rabbit hole of looking at houses and just being like, oh. And I'm always amazed because buying a house is so much scarier and harder than it seems. You know, there's a lot of paperwork that you have to fill out. There's a lot of documents that you have to prepare. It's hard to make the choice. A lot of times it becomes very emotional because you fall in love with a house and then you're like, oh, but I have to have this house. And then you don't realize that this house doesn't meet all of your needs.

It's in the wrong location or it doesn't have enough bedrooms or bathrooms or whatever it is, but you fell in love with something about the house and being able to help people understand what they're really looking for is it's always been pretty appealing to me. I've just been afraid of being an entrepreneur.

So I think I have, you and I have talked about this. I don't know that we've talked about it on the podcast, but I definitely have some imposter syndrome where I worry a lot. And I'm always like, oh, I'm not, who would want to use me to buy a house? Who would want to use me as a real estate agent? And I'm sure that I'm not the only person that has those thoughts, but I think that has kept me from doing it in the past. And I'm pretty excited to start it now. Yeah, it'll be something new, something different.

Is there a point at which you need some kind of minimum success at being a real estate agent broker until you let your current job go? Have you figured out what that looks like? So I have enough FU money that I don't necessarily need to have that build up.

I might do it anyway, just because I know that I have these trips planned and I have a feeling I'm going to travel and do a lot more this year. So it would be nice to have that buffer. So it's not a requirement. You don't have to, you've done so much good in your financial picture right now, you've got FE money, that it's not something that you will hesitate to quit your current job, if whatever catalyst caused that.

you wouldn't have the financial worry to make that shift. That's good. I don't know. I don't know if anyone else has these same concerns and they might. And it's something I wouldn't mind talking through at some point. But I think even when the math works out, you can still be in your head about whether or not to quit a job.

Even though the math is like this straightforward equation and tells you that you have this huge runway you're still like oh but i'm giving up the security of insurance and. You know all these things that you know where they are and what happens if i break my foot tomorrow or. You know i'm training for the emerald epic and i wipe out on my bike and up with a broken arm.

you know how much is that gonna cost and what about physical therapy and what about all of these other things that there is a safety blanket that insurance provides and that full-time employment provides knowing that it's friday and i'm getting a paycheck so those things kind of come into play too which i don't know if you have thoughts about that especially being retired or having a different mindset than what i tend to have.

No, it's interesting that you bring it up like that because even being retired three years now and it's going well, like I am right now doing things to prepare myself to re-enter the job force. I've got buddies of mine who I've worked with sending me job openings, descriptions. I've taken just this last week, I took the C best and I don't know if you know what that is, but it's in California.

If you want to be a substitute teacher, you have to take a minimum skills test. So this week is three separate tests. There's a math test, a reading test, and a writing test. Just yesterday, I finished up taking a third part, the writing test, and I'll get the results in a few weeks. But I'm doing things to, should an opportunity come up, that I am more prepared to take it.

Not that I need to, but because I might want to, for not necessarily just the reasons that you spoke, because I am fortunate that I am a proof of concept over the last three years in a high cost of living area. I've proven that I can live without the fear of, I mean, I've got insurance because of military retirement, or not like life insurance, but health insurance. I've got a pension and those things. So I'm good, but there's other reasons that I... Yeah. So tell us, what are those other reasons?

Exploring Post-Retirement Opportunities

before. It was like, honestly, like a little bit of a distraction. Like, I'm a very routine guy. And I enjoy my routines. I like going to bed a certain time. I like waking up at a certain time. I like doing the same things. I like cleaning my house. I like all these things. I'm a routine guy. But, and I'm not bored.

I'm not looking for new things to do necessarily. That's the argument of like, I could never retire. I'd be so bored. That's not me. I'm not bored. But why not look at another adventure or a new experience and why can't work be that for you? So for me, I'm just exploring. I don't know that I'll actually take any of these jobs, but it's just something I'm dipping my toe into at the very surface level right now.

I would not be bored at all. When people say, oh, I would be so bored, I think, I have enough stuff for 10 people to do, let alone just for one. I kind of want to be bored. But you're not going to be bored because you have an accountability partner who's going to keep you on your toes for this year at least. I didn't even do it. My dad did it. And it was funny, but I wasn't supposed to laugh. You know, so those things come up in the fact that a lot of people where I grew up still think that she is me because they didn't like, I don't even know how that's possible. We don't look alike. We don't act alike, but definitely different hair in high school doesn't lie. I know she has super curly hair. It's like super curly. I mean, so we're going to wrap this thing up.
