00:00:36
Speaker
So in this Artist Archetype Series, we've been exploring your unique artistic essence by examining the motivations, connections, and inspirations that drive your

Speaker
art making process.
00:00:47
Speaker
So you can discover how your unique archetype shapes your artistic voice. And our hope has been to help you more clearly identify just what makes you tick, what makes it worth it to you, what's soul filling instead of soul killing, so that you can think outside the box when it comes to crafting a path for your art making.
00:01:10
Speaker
So whether it's a money making endeavor or not, it's your unique path. And now more than ever, there just really isn't only one way. Yeah, Lisa, I got to say, this has been my favorite season so far.
Inviting Listener Engagement
00:01:25
Speaker
I mean, just having the companion piece with this series and being able to talk to all the amazing guests that we were able to talk to, we connect it with a ton of our listeners through Instagram, through email, through DMs. yeah It's been awesome. And honestly,
00:01:43
Speaker
I've learned a lot about myself with this series. Yeah, you learned you were a soul healer. Especially when did soul healer one, because I went back and forth saying, I'm not a soul healer, I'm a maker, and I'm definitely not a maker.
00:01:57
Speaker
So you kind of learned some things about yourself that you you're operating in a certain way, but it's not necessarily what drives you to make. Right, right. You're capable of getting a lot of things done and caring about your craft, but that's not why you do it.
00:02:12
Speaker
Yeah. And I'll tell you, it's also been a great conversation piece to have with friends and family and other people I've met through listening to the podcast. I've had a lot of people just take the quiz. Some people ah that took the quiz didn't even listen to the podcast yet. They took the quiz and then started listening to the podcast.
00:02:30
Speaker
So I think it's been a really wonderful journey the past couple months. Yeah, it really has. It absolutely has. And I'm very excited because we've decided we want to continue this conversation.
00:02:41
Speaker
So what are we going to do, Dan? On April 17th at 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, we will be having a Be, Make, Do live conversation with you, the listeners.
00:02:52
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. we're It's going to be an intimate opportunity to get together on Zoom. And we just want to discuss the podcast. So bring your questions, your comments, your insights, your challenges, and we'll just have a conversation about what's kind of been stirred up by this series in the podcast or maybe the podcast as a whole. We just love to hear from you.
00:03:11
Speaker
Right. And you can RSVP right now by heading to our show notes. or contacting us on Instagram, or heading to our website, soulmakers.org backslash be, make, do.
Concluding the Series and Next Steps
00:03:24
Speaker
All right. Well, this is our last episode for this particular series, and we wanted to do ah conclusion by reviewing the archetypes, and then maybe, and we're going to talk a little bit about some of the feedback that we've gotten, which seems to fall into certain categories. So there are some themes that keep coming up.
00:03:42
Speaker
So we're going to use that that feedback to explore those themes a little bit and talk about what comes next. So you've identified your archetype or maybe you're digging into it. What do you do with that? What comes next? Right, right.
00:03:53
Speaker
So let's go through it. Let's do it. Let's start with archetype one.
Exploring the Artist Archetypes
00:03:57
Speaker
All right. The storyteller. You are motivated by the possibility of stirring curiosity, wonder, and a deeper sense of truth in your audiences.
00:04:05
Speaker
Yeah, storytellers are are great because they have this potential for seeing um the power of art and what it can do and are motivated by helping other people see how those aha moments.
00:04:17
Speaker
So they have something very specific that that they want to communicate and convey and express through their art making. But on top of that is this joy in that light bulb going off.
00:04:29
Speaker
Or the change or like people experiencing something and um maybe having a ah different way of seeing things when they leave the theater or finish the book or read the blog post or leave the concert, whatever it is.
00:04:43
Speaker
So yeah, that's the storyteller. All right. The second one, the maker. To you, everything is a creative project. It's that joy of making that drives you. You're just wired that way.
00:04:54
Speaker
Right. So makers are delighted by the creative process itself, by their instruments, by um their ideas. They're definitely visionaries from an artistic standpoint in that they have creative and visionary ideas creative impulses that are coming out.
00:05:13
Speaker
And that is what motivates them, the actual making of it. Whereas with an imaginative visionary, it's about getting that idea out there for other people um and, and affecting change and having other people buy that idea.
00:05:27
Speaker
The maker is all about making the art. All right, third one, the imaginative visionary. You enjoy dreaming big and thinking about the future.
00:05:37
Speaker
Your work might not fit neatly into a mold, but that's just fine because you're motivated by the idea of what can be. That's right. It's all about the ideas with the imaginative visionary.
00:05:49
Speaker
And in the same way, they love art and and may pay a lot of attention to craft, but it's in service to the idea. So it's kind of the the opposite of makers in a way.
00:06:00
Speaker
right And um they're very motivated by ideas themselves and practical application is a whole other story. So they can show up in a lot of different ways. And for a lot of visionary, magic to visionaries, the um discipline may change.
00:06:15
Speaker
ah The format may change. you know It's not necessarily that they are glued to one particular artistic discipline. It shows up in everything that they do. And and i with a lot of a lot of these, that's actually true, that there is a bit of a through line that just shows up in how you express yourself throughout your life.
00:06:35
Speaker
All right. Our fourth one, the mystic. Your art is an expression of your internal journey, spiritual life, and the reflections on the world. You are motivated by the sense of connection and groundedness you experience when you create.
00:06:49
Speaker
Yep. For the mystic, art making is all about making sense of the world, connecting with God, making sense of their own interior life. and um And then sharing the artwork can be a part of trying to be understood um and connect with others through that art making.
00:07:06
Speaker
And they may also invite other in people into that process to be able to have those kinds of experiences for themselves. Yeah. So what about the prophetic critic, Dan? the prophetic critic.
00:07:17
Speaker
Not too many of those. No, we did not get many of those. But if you are one and you're listening, you are motivated by a belief in the power of art to transform lives and cultures and the possibility of creating something of enduring value.
00:07:31
Speaker
Yeah. Prophetic critics have a very serious commitment to what they see that is wrong in the world and how that might be fixed. or ah And this shows up in things like art as social practice and um you know creative criticism, all kinds of it kind of this self-explanatory in a way.
00:07:50
Speaker
um But it is really about affecting change and about getting the attention of other people in order to affect change. And finally, Dan, the near and dear to your heart, yep the soul healer.
00:08:04
Speaker
So the soul healer, you love to help others through your work. Your heart's desire is to express your inner self and bring healing and wholeness to others. Right. So again, what we're talking about here with all of these archetypes is our motivations, what drives us to create.
00:08:23
Speaker
And we all operate within probably all of these categories at different points in time in our art making, maybe just because our art making requires it, our, you know,
00:08:34
Speaker
If you're a musician, you're with you're with audiences. If you're a writer, you have to get the craft done. But this is about what do you need internally in order for it to be satisfying and fulfilling for you?
00:08:48
Speaker
how did god This is all about the make what you were created to make. How did God shape and form you with all your idiosyncrasies, all your beliefs and thoughts about the world, all your values?
00:09:00
Speaker
And how does that show up in your art making? And so as we've discussed several times, the soul healer is similar to the mystic in a way, but it has to have an outward expression. And and the the driving force is to help others have a connection with God, others to experience healing and wholeness, community, a sense of belonging.
00:09:22
Speaker
those kinds of things. So yeah, those are our archetypes.
Impact of Archetypes on Listeners
00:09:27
Speaker
And we've had some really great feedback around this. We've gotten, like you said, from a variety of different sources um and that this tool has actually been really useful. And I keep mentioning that this is not scientific, really.
00:09:43
Speaker
um It's based on some other different kinds of assessments, but also um and Just something that I've used as part of coaching over the time. So I thought that it would be useful for us to look back at some of the the feedback that we've received um and see if we can get at some of the main takeaways. And like I said, that what's next as we talk through it. So...
00:10:06
Speaker
We have a couple of quotes from um some communication and then also some clips from some of our previous podcasts where we had guests talk about this.
Importance of Community for Artists
00:10:15
Speaker
So we're going to play the first one is from Eric Loxmo, which I think was our first interview in this series. So Dan, could you go ahead and play that? Yeah.
00:10:25
Speaker
And you know, who knows? You never know how life turns and shifts and opportunities come and go. And isolation is the worst thing that, that's one thing that I think is the most dangerous thing is living in isolation. on Every level is where things go really, really sideways.
00:10:43
Speaker
The artists want at times to be in isolation and that is not where they need to be. There's time for that, but that needs to be more of intentional retreat. But um I think you what you're doing is saying, come, join us, don't hide, don't play with your demons.
00:11:03
Speaker
and They wake up with you and they they speak you in your ear and they say, you're not going to do anything today. You're worthless. No one cares. And for someone like you and your community to say,
00:11:14
Speaker
No, we're all we're all going. We're going somewhere. it may be a stumbling through ah windy path, but we're going someplace and join us. That is absolutely beautiful. Yeah.
00:11:25
Speaker
I love what he said. And I really wanted to start off with this because even though it's not particular to the archetypes quiz, the it's kind of the the what's next for every single one of us.
00:11:41
Speaker
And it's one of the main goals for us for the quiz, for the podcast, for Soulmakers, is to help artists realize that we are not alone. You are not alone. And if you feel like you're crazy, it's because you're surrounded by people who just don't get it, right? And so the what's next is absolutely to get with other people who can affirm you and challenge you to grow in your gifts and and challenge you towards action.
00:12:08
Speaker
And there are so many groups we're finding more and more every day around the world of Christians who are artists, ah lots of different ways that that plays out, lots of different disciplines.
00:12:21
Speaker
um but But it's so important to find people, even if it's just maybe one or two other people who really can understand um because constantly being surrounded by people who don't get it can make you feel really crazy and make you want to isolate. And it's
Personal Artistic Motivations and Identity
00:12:37
Speaker
really important that we are in this together.
00:12:40
Speaker
So i loved I loved that quote and that point. So, okay. So let's read. um I think we got a message from somebody. Let's let's read that one and go on there. All right. Here is that message.
00:12:53
Speaker
I'm quoting, by the way. It's from somebody else. Yes. This feels spot on. You hit the nail on the head. It makes total sense. I can relate to it.
00:13:03
Speaker
It also made it easier to objectively appreciate what makes me, me. For example, the desire for process and order and taking time to hone a skill. Yeah, again, this this reiterates and backs up what we were talking about with Make What You Were Created to Make, that there are ways that are natural for you to do things that might be unnatural for other people.
00:13:24
Speaker
um You have skills and gifts and talents that are put together in a particular way that may not look the same as other people. And understanding that God did that on purpose and really affirming that for yourself helps you to be confident.
00:13:38
Speaker
So that's, I think, one of the biggest, makes me happy when people who've taken the quiz then are like, yes, okay, this affirmed what i but I thought about myself, what I knew about myself. And somehow, even though you're the one who's who's taking the quiz, you're the one who's affirming it, it feels even externally validated um that that is who you are.
00:13:58
Speaker
So the next step for that is just taking that confidence and then building a plan of action. So now that you know these things about yourself or you've affirmed these things about yourself and you have that confidence, what's the next little step that you can take?
00:14:15
Speaker
and or How does that inform whatever decisions or discernment you're going through right now? where Wherever you're trying to make a choice or discern, is this something I should or shouldn't do?
00:14:26
Speaker
Take a second to check in with your motivations, with the archetype and see how that aligns and what will that do. And then once again, Find the people who will affirm that in you on a regular basis and make sure that they are the people that you're going to for advice and to bounce ideas off of and stop going to those who don't say it, if that makes sense.
00:14:49
Speaker
Makes total sense. All right. So in addition to this sense of affirmation after taking the quiz, I think the next most common one was this this ah reaction that you're you've got a quote for this reaction. Yeah.
00:15:03
Speaker
So this quote is Storyteller, really? That really surprised me. i would have guessed several other options before that, but I find it interesting and I can see why now that I think about it.
00:15:15
Speaker
Right, so just that surprise. Like a lot of people actually said, huh, I thought I would get something else, but I got Storyteller or I got Mystic or I got Maker.
00:15:26
Speaker
But once I started really thinking about it and really reading through, i can see why I got that. And I think there's um probably a couple of reasons for that.
00:15:37
Speaker
um One is there may be more to why you do things than you're consciously aware of on the surface, right? Maybe you have multiple motivations for why you do what you do, and it's complex.
00:15:50
Speaker
And so, again, this is not a scientific test tool that like once you... um score as a particular archetype, that's it. It's an opportunity for you to explore for yourself what motivates you. And yeah, test out whether or not what you got rings true to you or not, and then look through the other archetypes and see which pieces make sense to you. Because actually, i would say, well, really,
00:16:17
Speaker
It would be great if we could do the quiz in a way that you could see it as a pie chart where you're – because a lot of people might score 40% in one area and then you've got two strong 20% somewhere else if you could break it out like that.
00:16:30
Speaker
We're all probably a little bit of um all of the different archetypes. What you received in your results was the the primary or the the strongest one. But go ahead and you can figure that out for yourself to say, yeah, I think I'm kind of like a mystic soul healer, you know, or I'm a prophetic critic maker. It doesn't really matter.
00:16:53
Speaker
The point is that as you look at those things that make up um that archetype that you're paying attention to how much time am I spending developing my
Balancing Artistic Identities
00:17:03
Speaker
Yeah. um What decisions am I making about whether or not it's important to me to make money with my artwork? How satisfied am I um if I never get to show it to somebody else?
00:17:18
Speaker
And these are the questions that you're asking to then create a a path, a career path, a a rhythm in your day and your week. That's going to fill you up.
00:17:29
Speaker
And also by paying attention to those things, you're paying attention to the way that God made you. And you want to pour more into those things so that you can do whatever it is that you feel led to do or whatever God has put in front of you. Mm-hmm.
00:17:43
Speaker
and one of the There was another really funny conversation that went along with this surprise. Somebody else who was who was really surprised because she thought that she would probably test as prophetic critic.
00:17:54
Speaker
um But then she actually got soul healer. And we were talking about why that was. And she kind of realized that she has this intense sense of what could be better in the world or what needs to happen.
00:18:10
Speaker
But the motivation under that is really about helping people to heal. And so there has to be a one-on-one person or our group environment, not just making in the studio.
00:18:23
Speaker
So she kind of felt guilty that maybe she wasn't spending as much time in the studio as she should. Mm-hmm. um But then she started seeing, no, wait, these groups that I'm hosting are actually part of my art making. It has to be balanced for me.
00:18:37
Speaker
And oh, great, and now I don't have to feel guilty about not being in the studio because I'm making art in both of these places. And she said, um not she's I'm not a prophetic critic. I'm actually a cranky soul healer.
00:18:50
Speaker
Which is really just funny because um being able to to to see clearly what it is that's important to you can then help you to be free to do the things that you really need to focus on to make what you were created to make, but also to be able to be a full and whole person yourself.
00:19:10
Speaker
So that was a lot of fun. yeah We have another quote from a podcast episode we did with Tammy Dixon. um So why don't you go and play that one, Dan? Okay. Oh, yeah. I mean, I was 80% storyteller and then 20% something else. And then I always focus on what I'm not, right? I mean, I was zero in the other ones. I'm like, why am I not some magical mystic person? But, you know, like, ah you always want what you don't have and then you get what you think you want and then you don't want that or else you want more. I mean, it's never enough. And I, you know, um to act to to know
00:19:47
Speaker
the big why Why we're here, why we do this, what motivates us is such a challenging question because, you know, the the and i'm I'm older now. And yeah, when I was younger, I wanted to be famous.
00:20:04
Speaker
I thought that was going to be the answer to all my problems. Yeah. you know When I'm famous, all these other things will line up and and and really all the inside, ah my insides will feel right finally because I was searching for um you know i was searching for externally what only can happen internally and I don't know a 20-year-old's you know, without life experience would know that, you know, would even think along those lines.
00:20:34
Speaker
Man, there's so much wisdom. Tammy's a storyteller and she's really good at it. And she has so much wisdom. i loved that conversation. And that thing that she said, i was searching externally for what can only happen internally.
00:20:50
Speaker
Boom. That's, that's it. This quiz hopefully helps us to go deeper to find identity in something bigger than ourselves. I mean, beyond the quiz. i mean I mean, that's a big part of our call. And that's a big part of what we're exploring together with Be Make do is to so to seat call in who we are.
00:21:13
Speaker
And it's so important to get over our need to impress based on what someone else says is successful. right That's just the path to misery, whether it's fame or making a certain amount of money or being shown in a certain gallery or playing a certain number of shows or having a certain number of likes and follows or whatever that thing is.
00:21:39
Speaker
um Chasing that is just, that is soul killing, especially for a lot of people. So this idea of really going internally, focusing on the internal work um to find that sense of fulfillment and what life and your career means to you.
00:22:02
Speaker
Why did God give you those talents? What is it that you are meant to do with it? Forget about everything else. And we do, I think, in artistic circles with probably all artistic circles, but artistic Christian circles do end up talking a lot about this tension of how do I make a living and how do I make um myself, how do i make an impact? How do I make myself visible? All of those kinds of things.
00:22:27
Speaker
And getting over that and working through that is important. But the other side of it is also important, which is to... um yeah getting over what someone else says it means to be faithful.
00:22:41
Speaker
We also have to do that. So like getting over our need to impress based on what someone else says it means to be faithful. This is a really important thing. If you have a hangup or a question about what it looks like to be faithful as a Christian and as an artist, you need to figure it out.
00:23:00
Speaker
That's the what's next there. Read the Bible for yourself. Study the Old and the New Testament. Find a group or a leader who can disciple you where you are. But don't settle for, I feel uncomfortable about this, or I'm not sure how I'm supposed to ah show up in this space, or and my pastor says this, or or my mom says this, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. You need to be sure.
Evolving Artistic Expressions
00:23:23
Speaker
And there are ways to do that. And that's I'm glad you're listening to the Be, Make, Do podcast. That's a big part of what we're trying to do. But take the time and don't be afraid to dig deep, to find that answer for yourself so that you can stand confident and secure and move forward boldly, knowing that you are being faithful to who God created you to be.
00:23:45
Speaker
That's a big one. Talking about seeing the through line in things, there's another, an email I think we received from somebody. Can you go ahead and read that quote? Yeah. Quote, I took the quiz and it said I was the mystic.
00:23:58
Speaker
Did you think I would be the imaginative visionary? i think I have qualities of both, but innately I'm following a desire to commune with God and others and with authentic mystical connection.
00:24:09
Speaker
I think that leads to creating new and visionary ways of living. Perhaps when I was younger, I wanted to actively imagine new alternatives. Now I want to listen more and the imagining of new ways simply comes.
00:24:22
Speaker
Yeah. So I guess, again, this is similar to some of the other conversation we've just been having. um But the idea that maybe it might change over time um what your motivation is.
00:24:34
Speaker
But I think more than the actual motivation changing over time. The way it looks might change over time. So we i would I've been having a conversation with this artist who's currently living in Greece, um and i I knew her when she was in in Detroit for a while.
00:24:51
Speaker
And her look her work, to me, looked like a prophetic critic or imaginative visionary. But as we were talking and she was telling me what she had scored, it turns out that she's a mystic. So for her, as as you heard in the quote, for her following the Holy Spirit and and continuing this path of making sense of the world and then helping other people to make sense of the world through art shows up in all kinds of different ways.
00:25:16
Speaker
When she was younger, it was through art social practice, community practice. Now it's leading intimate retreats and travel experiences and all kinds of different things. So that's important to notice that You may be somebody who at this point in your life is is doing um is is a mom. you know You're raising small children and understanding that those skills and the way that you parent can is still part of that motivation for why you make art. And so the things that you are developing now might be called to bear later on in the studio.
00:25:56
Speaker
Or what you developed in the boardroom might later come into how you work your craft on stage. like It's part of how you show up in the world. And if you were doing something else other than art, that would be how you would show up in those spaces.
00:26:11
Speaker
um There's always this kind of layering of how what we experience and learn shows up and comes to fruition later.
00:26:22
Speaker
So that's ah that's an interesting exercise to look back over the course of your life and see if you can find that through line and how the different ways that it's popped up
Defining Personal Success in Art
00:26:31
Speaker
for you. The next steps there, like I said, evaluate that through line and just know that nothing is wasted.
00:26:37
Speaker
you can go back and listen to the Wisehearted Ones series, and I invite you to look at the calling stories in the Bible, and you'll see this play out. um Over and over again, that what's present when when ah someone is first called or when they're young often is developed over time and shows up and pops up in different expressions over the course of their life and their calling.
00:26:59
Speaker
All right, we've got one more for you. and This is, I believe, another email. Why don't you go ahead and read this email? You got it. I can't thank you enough for the last episode of the Soulmakers podcast on the Soulkealer. Wow, was I pleasantly surprised.
00:27:14
Speaker
I hadn't quite made the connection before about my desire to help others. It's why my art making truly isn't satisfying unless I'm part of a group. These longings and misplaced identities have been incredibly disorienting over the past few years, and it feels so helpful to have new language to make connection points in my story and my life.
00:27:32
Speaker
I feel like I've been surrounded by makers and possibly mystics who have different struggles, and so it's been hard for others to make any sense of how I can go from making art to wanting to share my story with a group, which has nothing to do with art making, but without sharing, the rest has lacked meaning.
00:27:49
Speaker
Oh, I love that email. That was really lovely. I think that all follows along with a lot of the other themes that we've talked about. But there is this other piece of feeling like you don't fit in, even within artistic circles or even within Christian artistic circles, which can be really, really hard.
00:28:07
Speaker
But hopefully, yeah, taking the the quiz can help you to see that just because you don't do things the way that other people do it doesn't mean that there's something wrong. I love that she had the intuition to be able to see that um she's spending time with makers or mystics who who need other things out of that process and to be able to say, okay, that's cool.
00:28:29
Speaker
That's what you need. And here's what I need. um that That then ah frees up so much energy and time to spend doing the things that you are really called to do.
00:28:41
Speaker
So then what's next in this category is, yeah, don't feel guilty. like you don't yeah This is one of my one of my things. We have to stop thinking that we get to make art or we get to do these things that God has has created us to do or um make in the ways that God has created us to make.
00:29:04
Speaker
we've You've been given gift. And what do you do with a gift? You have a responsibility to use it. so you need to do the work to have the confidence to persevere and to be supported in that journey.

So find the people who can support you, do the things that you need to do to build up those those ways that you work to secure that in your life um so that you can go out and become who you were created to be, make what you were created to make and do what you were created to do.
00:29:35
Speaker
So no matter what, it's time to establish your own vision of success and the good life and make that one that's based on solid values so that you can easily say no to distracting opportunities and yes to your inner calling.

And remember, we've all had this experience. Others may dismiss your visions when they can't see the future that you do, when they can't see what your work is trying to do. But you have to trust your own instincts and stay focused, believing that what you do today is building towards tomorrow.

And some people are just going to need to see it to believe it. So before we kind of wrap this up, why don't you read through that list of what you need to thrive, which, by the way, is the same for each

archetype. The things we need to do are the same no matter what motivates us.
00:30:28
Speaker
And I love reminding people of things. Great. So here we go. So this is what you need to thrive. Okay. A rhythm of spiritual practice that you own and love will lead to an increased sense of wholeness.
00:30:41

A strong peer support system. A commitment to developing proficiency in your artistic discipline so you can let go of ideals of perfection and embrace the joy a process.
00:30:54
Speaker
That's a good one. um Habits of self-reflection and conscientious self-knowledge. clarity around your vision and motivations, the capacity to constructively engage the issues that are facing our world, and tools for courageous action.
00:31:13
Speaker
Great. And those just happen to be the seven principles that we base our soulmakers teaching on that all artists, especially artists of faith, need to have to be able to operate in the world in the way that God intended for you to do so.
00:31:30
Speaker
This has been a really incredible conversation, and it's really rewarding to know that it's been helpful to our listeners. It's a tool, like I said, that I use all the time in coaching artists because it helps to just get to the root of how someone is built, what gifts they have, what they're created to make.
00:31:48
Speaker
And it's from that place that you can really learn to discern where God is pulling you to act. and becoming confident in the reality that God made you to be and make the way you do, that it's not an accident.
00:32:04
Speaker
You're not doing something wrong because you don't look like whoever you follow on Instagram or whoever's in your artist circles or whatever hero you have or whatever someone else tells you that you need to be.
00:32:17
Speaker
When you know who you are and how you're built and that God did that on purpose, Well, then there's nothing that can stop you. And it's from that place, as I said, that God is calling you to act with full permission, full grace, and full strength of the Spirit of God to be a blessing to the nations, to the world, to your community, to your friends, your family, to God.
