Speaker: Welcome to Bi Men Unfiltered, a podcast for today's curious and bisexual man hosted by older, wiser bisexual men who were also once curious. From identity and relationships to dating, sex, community, and everything in between, nothing's off the table. Honest, authentic, and we're not afraid to get a little NSFW or more than a little. No shame, no stereotypes, just real conversations. On today's episode, we are going to discuss our favorite bi-identified characters. Well, I guess bi-characters, maybe they're identified, maybe they're not.

Speaker: Well, I guess well we will find out as we discuss. Maybe so. And, you know, i I do this kind of thing all wrong because i I overthink, but we'll see how I overthink that as we go along. Okay. Okay.

Speaker: Well, of course, we cannot start an episode without telling each other what we've been up to and therefore telling our listeners what we've been up to. Yes. So, Grayson, what have you been up to this week? what what's ah what What do you got going on?

Speaker: I'm actually not saying that I'm boring this this time. Okay. All right. Because I cast my the the net for my friend with benefits search across a couple of new platforms.

Speaker: Nice. A couple of additional platforms. hey you want to Do you want to say what those platforms are? No, because it's embarrassing. It's embarrassing? What?

Speaker: It's embarrassing that it's Reddit. Oh, okay.

Speaker: But, I mean, a lot of people, i mean, ah that's where a lot of people are finding potential friends with benefits, though. I mean, that's not it. see It seems so. it just it Well, embarrassing because just the platform as a whole seems like a dumpster fire sometimes.

Speaker: True. It seems like a dumpster fire of just internet trolls and bots. Yes. Yes. So, but I figured what the hell, you know I, I found a bunch of local subreddits um and I, I only posted in like two of them.

Speaker: I think. Okay. Um, but I've gotten a fair number of responses, uh, separating the, the good potential matches from the bad, you know, the ones that they're, they're boring, cliched conversations. and Um, um,

Speaker: They're just not really conversations and they die after a few messages. ah Yeah. um There's a few that you know i go ahead and and pin so that they don't get buried had that you know seemed pretty decent and didn just kind of petered out. so Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: But one of them, pretty cool, you actually had an in-person vibe check that went fairly well. All right. All right. That's great. In-person vibe check that that went pretty well. ah Just you trying to figure out how to coordinate you any any future meetings um And then literally just this morning, um what since we are both currently working from home, my wife and i updated our profile on the lifestyle site that we're on to significantly trim down the wall of text that it had become. Yeah.

Speaker: I see. Was that because it was clear people weren't reading, weren't getting past the wall of text and were just shooting their shot? i i mean, that's part of it.

Speaker: Yeah, that's part of it. But, you know, and and I even said, know, like we really because that I was what sparked it. I was telling her about. Yet another single straight guy who messaged us earlier this week.

Speaker: Good morning, lovely couple. I am a single Latin male new to the area and would love to get to know you guys better. Yeah. He got our boilerplate.

Speaker: I see. Yeah. hey Yes, that was his exact answer. his reply. Yeah, that was his reply. yeah i see. But then he came back a few minutes later with, thanks for clarifying.

Speaker: um It was hearty there. I guess that's good that you got a ah thanks for clarifying. Probably more than most people send True.

Speaker: True. i suppose that that that is better. Yeah. better Yeah. But, you know since we just changed it this morning, you know, too early to tell if, you know, what, if any effect it's going to have, whether it will attract more of the kinds of contacts that we're looking for, both as a couple and me on my own.

Speaker: hmm. um Or if you know we're still going to get the same, you know can you read? Right, exactly.

Speaker: yeah i hope that it I hope that it works out. it's always It's always good to refresh your profile every now and again. Yeah. Anyway. oh yeah. Oh, yeah, absolutely. i mean... we We do that, too. We had been way overdue before we refreshed it last year, early last year.

Speaker: And then as circumstances slightly changed as the year went on, rather than revising, rather than completely updating, we were just, you revising and tacking on. So what was already long, here's what made it a wallet text.

Speaker: is that when we refreshed it last year, we tried a slightly different approach in that we each did a section.

Speaker: Like there's there's a section on her, there's a section on me, then the section on us as a couple. Right. And we did that in all four of the major sections of the profile. And so it just, it became this like, like long, long, long Yeah.

Speaker: yeah and then you go in and modify and add things like our you know single men you you should really only contact us if you're interested in by male interaction And so, yeah, it it got trimmed down significantly. I still, as as we had our draft in Notepad, it still looked insanely long to me.

Speaker: Okay. Not as long as it did before. It still looked long. Once we actually put it in the profile and the page updated, was like, it could probably still use a little trimming, but it doesn't look as long as I thought it was in Notepad.

Speaker: Okay. That's good. That's good. so Yeah. What about you, Sam? What have you been up to? Well, I mean, the past couple weeks have been a unexciting for me, but I do have a few leads on potential new friends with benefits and meeting some new people for coffee, which is good.

Speaker: Um, so, and then I'm meeting up this week, this weekend with, uh, with one friend with benefit, uh, potential, I guess is not really a potential because this one breaks my travel rule. So I think I've mentioned in the past that I have a rule. Like if, if it's going to be more than an hour's drive, um,

Speaker: I'm not interested. and Right there with you. This one, unfortunately, kind of breaks that rule by a lot because they're three hours away.

Speaker: And that's like generally too far for me. like i would just kind of shut it down, not going to happen kind of thing. But...

Speaker: But he is very much my type. So and the conversation has been good. And we did like a video chat and that went well.

Speaker: And ah there's been all kinds of sexy pictures ah traded between us and such.

Speaker: So, yeah, I think ah I think I'm going to go ahead with it. And we'll see we'll see how it goes. Hopefully that's some damn good sex.

Speaker: Yeah, I kind of when, when it's like three hours away, that kind of puts a little bit of pressure on it. Right. Like, and. Yeah. Cause know, what, what if, what if it lasts like 10 minutes?

Speaker: You always go round too around round three. There's the refractory period and, and you know, let's let's see, see what happens.

Speaker: But, um, Yeah, we we matched on Tinder. And the way Tinder, and I think other dating apps do this as well, they do distance as the crow flies instead of driving directions. And if you live in a place like the Pacific Northwest, where there are a lot of mountains and things, ah that doesn't really work. So it said that this person was like ah a lot closer than...

Speaker: They are driving. so we'll see. We'll see how that goes. I think it'll go. yeah i think it'll go well. Yeah.

Speaker: Hopefully so. And i I will be here with my popcorn when you get back. I will be sure to share the details on this this podcast.

Speaker: Yes. i I will be here with with my popcorn and maybe, hopefully, my coconut oil. but Maybe. Maybe indeed. Yes.

Speaker: So that is what I've been up to. Let's get into the word of the week. word of the week. What's our word of the week this week, Grayson?

Speaker: Well, it's it's two words. It's a phrase. a phrase. Our word of the week is bi-erasure. Bi-erasure. so is that like the the techno pop synth band from the 80s are by ah i well i think they're a little more than just by uh but okay i i like erasure erasure is great that song always it's Fantastic. My love it. My first exposure to them with my freshman year in college, my best friend and I were because we put roommate preference down. We were in the dorm on campus. That was three to a room.

Speaker: Yeah. And we had a a wannabe frat guy who listened to nothing but erasure. Oh my gosh. And, oh, oh.

Speaker: And, I mean, my pain wasn't as bad as my best friend, though, because he was a music major. Okay, okay. And he's like, make it stop. It needs to stop now. stop. This is too much. Make it stop. I want to hear something good.

Speaker: hey erasure's not bad. I mean, come on. He's like, it's I want to hear more than these two guys, a synthesizer and a drum machine. Yeah.

Speaker: Yes. But of course, bisexual erasure, which is our phrase slash word of the week, is the tendency to ignore or remove, falsify or re-explain evidence of bisexuality so that it can be put in these sort of ah gay or straight buckets. Right.

Speaker: It happens when bisexual people, people who identify as bisexual, are described as just going through a phase or they're confused or they're otherwise ignored, dismissed, or downplayed. So the lack of recognition that bisexuality is...

Speaker: uh, of valid sexuality is, uh, you know, can be seen in a lot of different media for sure.

Speaker: And, it happens just in queer spaces as well. Yep. Yeah. Yeah. And of course, in media, since we are talking about our favorite bi characters this episode, you know, ah characters who date multiple genders and are shown that way are often labeled as gay or straight and or they never get a label at all instead of saying that they're bisexual.

Speaker: Yeah, I mean, I... One of the characters that i was going to that I would have put on my list later kind of falls into that territory, and that is you Willow on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Speaker: Yes. Willow very significantly pined for Xander, dated Oz, one of the best characters in the entire Buffyverse.

Speaker: And then when Seth Green left the show and she and Oz broke up, she started dating Tara. And instead of Willow then being labeled as bisexual, even Willow would say, well, gay now.

Speaker: God, really? ah That's so frustrating. I think Xander's then girlfriend was trying to claim that that Willow was trying to steal Xander from her. And she's like, no, I mean, you know gay now.

Speaker: So that's crazy. ah ah ah Ah, yeah. Well, yeah. and wait We, we, Whedon's a wonderful writer.

Speaker: hi I'm torn. ah love his writing. He's a trash human. me Yes. But now we get to celebrate our five favorite bisexual identified characters in media. Actually, some of these may not, may not actually be identified in the shows as bisexual, but we're, we're just going to kind of ignore that and, and,

Speaker: And instead of erasing them, yeah we're filling that in for them. So we have our five favorites. And I think we should just kind of go through our list.

Speaker: Shall I go first? Go first. Okay. ah I really like the show The Good Place. I don't know if I don't think you have seen The Good Place, Grayson. I have not. I have not seen The Good Place. I know the broad strokes of the twist.

Speaker: I know some of the things about the characters. yeah And um Manny Jacinto really has me interested in watching the show. Well, you should watch it because it's great. I mean, the the premise, the non-spoiler premise is that this this woman, Eleanor Shellstrop,

Speaker: finds herself uh in what is the good place and she was a trash human being in in life and ah realizes that she's been sent there by mistake and all sorts of hijinks ensue uh from there i won't spoil the rest of it but it uh takes some fun twists and turns But so Eleanor Shellstrop is not technically like a bisexually identified character in the show. However, there are several quotes and moments in the show where she expresses a more fluid attraction

Speaker: and potential bisexuality. So there's another character on the show who's female named Tahani. And there's a quote from Eleanor where she says, side note, I might legit be into Tahani, but that's for another time. like And she continues to like compliment tahani ah compliment Tahani on ah her her looks and such.

Speaker: And then there's a male character in the show, Chidi... ah who there's a conversation about whether you're or not Chidi is gay. And he says that he's not. Eleanor says, fine, bye. And when he says he's not by either, she says, why not? More guys should be by it's 2018. It's like, get over yourselves.

Speaker: I love that quote. I love that gift. I use that quite a lot. um Yes. More guys should be by. um I totally agree with that. Yeah. So Eleanor Shellstrop from ah The Good Place, one of my absolute favorite bi-fluid characters.

Speaker: All right. Next, kind of related to The Good Place, because it's by some of the same writers, is a show called Hacks that was on HBO. It is ah it is completed now. ive They did five seasons.

Speaker: And the character Ava Daniels, who is Hannah Einbinder, very talented Hannah Einbinder, is bisexual in the show. She is shown to have relationships with women as well as men and also couples. So there's like a ah very sort of a spectrum there.

Speaker: And this show follows ah Ava Daniels. who is like a struggling writer in LA and she gets paired up with Debra Vance, who is this, uh, Las Vegas comedian who is sort of down on her, on her luck, like looking to reinvigorate her popularity. And she hires Ava as a writer for her and all sorts of hijinks ensue once again. and It's just a really great show.

Speaker: ah Really fun twists and turns there. Just the relationship between Ava and Debra is great. ah It's also kind of a queer coded show as well. Like a lot of like queer friendly characters, a lot of queer characters in the show in general. But Ava, ah certainly a bisexual character in that one.

Speaker: also a comedy just like The Good Place. I watch more. I think all all of my all of my entries here are from comedies.

Speaker: Because that's what I watch the most of. Mine are all over the place. Actually, technically, he you'll see which one i I'm talking about when I get there. But looking at my list, there's one that on the surface doesn't look like like you know sci-fi, fantasy related. But, oh, it is. It kind of is.

Speaker: All right, next up, I want to talk ah about Paul Baker from the show Adults. This is a Hulu original show, and they've done two seasons of this. And Paul Baker is, i don't know that he's coded quite as bisexual, but definitely gender fluid, maybe pansexual. But it is sort of ah known in the show that he has both male and female partners or has had them.

Speaker: in the past so adults is a great show really funny if you have hulu i highly recommend that you watch adults it's only two seasons and i think there's only eight or ten episodes per season because we're sort of in that streaming era where they only do that number of episodes per season But yeah I hope it'll be back for a third season because it it really is great. But Paul Baker ah is a very cute looking. They're all 20 somethings, first of all, in this show, but they're all very attractive.

Speaker: ah oh very attractive. There's nothing wrong with that. Right. Who are very open about their sexuality and and desires, which is great. And there's some really funny pair-ups within that. So...

Speaker: Highly recommend watching that. Another comedy recommendation. And this one kind of also related to The Good Place and Hacks because it's sort of the Michael Schur adjacent universe.

Speaker: ah But Brooklyn Nine-Nine, if you have seen Brooklyn Nine-Nine at all. I don't know if you have. have not. disin You have not Brooklyn Nine-Nine comedy? have not.

Speaker: set in a in in a police precinct in Brooklyn. And ah really funny, Andy Samberg is in it. But also, ah Stephanie Beatriz plays a character named Rosa Diaz, who is a bisexual character. And in ah one, well, it's actually a two-episode arc, In season five, episode nine and ten, she comes out to her parents and ah the rest of her coworkers as well. and this show has gone on for like so five seasons without specifying her sexuality.

Speaker: But it's a really, really interesting arc, these two episodes, especially like go coming out to her parents who kind of initially struggle with it and think that it's a phase, which by erasure.

Speaker: yeah that whole thing happening here but they do work towards being accepting of it as well and so the interesting thing about this arc for for rosa is that stephanie beatriz is openly bisexual as an actress and she used her own experiences to kind of help guide the character's journey that's Really good stuff.

Speaker: Really also worth watching. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is just a great show in general. um But yeah, those two episodes. So it's episode nine and 10 in season five.

Speaker: If you want to watch that great stuff, the Brooklyn nine, nine, one of my favorite shows. All right. Finally, i will bring up Laszlo from what we do in the shadows. Do you watch what we do in the shadows?

Speaker: I do not ever. so Have you seen it? I know of it. I know of it. And i i have I,

Speaker: be in the right receptive mood to watch Taika Waititi stuff. Oh, right, right, right. I mean, he did the movie. because ah The TV show is different.

Speaker: So I'm, Laszlo is in the television show, What We Do in the Shadows, which is a similar premise to the movie, but it's, it's not Taika Waititi directing it or anything. He did the movie and then this is based on that. So a it's a little bit different from a humor perspective.

Speaker: Gotcha. Yeah, because i sometimes he just dials stuff up too much for me. I can understand that. Yes. Yes. I think what we do in the shadows, the movie is understated, maybe more so than some of his later works that are maybe turned up a little too much.

Speaker: But go ahead. Laszlo Cravensworth is ah played by Matt Barry, who is a fantastic actor. ah Been in a lot of different shows over the years, including The IT t Crowd, if you've ever seen that.

Speaker: um But he is an openly bisexual vampire. Actually, all the vampires... Well, okay. Nadia is Laszlo's wife. She's also bisexual. And then Nandor, who is like their friend, is also bisexual. He has something like... I don't know how many... I don't remember how many wives he has, but Nandor comments that some of his wives were actually men.

Speaker: So... Kind of funny in there. So there there's a lot of bisexuality happening in what we do in the shadows, the television show, a a really funny series. It's also available on Hulu because it was an f FX show.

Speaker: So ah they often comment about, you know, having sexual relations with male and female characters in the show. Gotcha.

Speaker: Good, good stuff. And that's my list. That's the five. So Eleanor Shellstrop from The Good Place, Ava Daniels from Hacks, Paul Baker from Adults, Rosa Diaz from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Laszlo from What We Do in the Shadows.

Speaker: With the bonus of Nandor and Nadia from What We Do in the Shadows as well, because they count. So kind of stuffing all the vampires from What We Do in the Shadows into the last one. entry Into one entry, yes.

Speaker: So with that out of the way, Grayson, now he i i I can't wait to hear about your list of five characters. Okay, so here's where we find out how I overthink.

Speaker: And and how how I cheat a top five list. Okay, no problem. I mean, i I did that in the last entry as well. So I cheated the top five list a little, so it's fine.

Speaker: Well, you know, it it's a it' it's a philosophy that I steal from friends of mine with with ah another movie podcast when they do like a top five five list themselves and they kind of cheat a little bit, which is, it's my show, fuck it, I'll do what I want.

Speaker: Exactly. um But I'm going to start off by saying that there's a few that I probably would have put on here, but they are quote, officially unquote gay or lesbian in their media um ah by erasure.

Speaker: I already mentioned Willow. Willow would be on the list, but Willow is officially a lesbian. Okay. Despite Xander, despite Oz...

Speaker: ah Well, and we go back to the sort of it's it was only a phase thing. It can be explained away by that was that character's phase, right? ah Another would be Brittany S. Pierce from Glee.

Speaker: Okay. Brittany and Santana were both in terms of how they acted and who they interacted with and who they had sex with on Glee were bisexual.

Speaker: Mm-hmm. But infamously in the Lady Gaga episode where they performed Born This Way, they were given an assignment where they had to make a T-shirt that said what their...

Speaker: there I don't remember how they put it on the show. the The thing they didn't like about themselves that they didn't want other people to know or just what they didn't like about themselves, but that they can't help because they were born this way.

Speaker: Right. And Santana originally you know made a shirt that said bitch. Okay. Because she's always mean to people.

Speaker: Hmm. And um at at the time, she and so she and Brittany had been doing this back and forth thing. And Brittany was like, well, that's not what your your thing is. And because britney his Brittany is very pretty, but Brittany is not bright. Yeah.

Speaker: brittanney made kind Brittany made the shirt that she thought was what Santana was really you ashamed of, more or less.

Speaker: It said Lebanese. Okay. Yeah. yeah But when they actually performed the song, Santana came in wearing the Lebanese shirt.

Speaker: But Brittany would have been on my list because I loved Brittany as a character. Hmm. she was She was dumb, but what what made her work, aside from being a – the actor Heather Morris is a phenomenal dancer.

Speaker: um But she had started doing – she was hired as basically a glorified extra. They needed some more cheerleaders to fill out the choir. Okay.

Speaker: To fill out the glee club. She was a glorified extra. But the writers picked up on like these little non-sequitur one-liners that in between takes she was throwing out.

Speaker: Mm-hmm. Okay. And so they started writing for that. Amazing. And so the the character was just, she was gloriously, not even ditzy, just kind of flaky and out there.

Speaker: Loved her. But she ended up marrying Santana and is quote unquote, officially Lebanese. Right. Yes. Yeah.

Speaker: yes um Now, here's here's where I cheat a little bit in that I have some honorable mentions. Okay. um I have an honorable mention, ah only an honorable mention because it never made it to screen because Disney and Lucasfilm are cowards.

Speaker: Okay. And that is Poe Dameron from the Star Wars sequel trilogy. How did it not make it to the screen? What are what are you referring to?

Speaker: um Because Poe on screen has at least one past relationship with a woman character introduced in The Rise of Skywalker. Okay. But the fans and Poe Dameron actor Oscar Isaac and Finn actor John Boyega were pushing for Poe and Finn to be a couple.

Speaker: Oh, interesting. Okay. Okay. um Boyega and Isaac were all... So is this like the fans have shipped this couple? like this yeah the The fans have shipped them. The actors shipped them.

Speaker: um Nice. It was even addressed in one of the ancillary media novels. Oh, okay. and that In that, in the novel set in between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, somebody asks Finn about him and Rose. he's like, no, Rose and I are are just friends. like Well, then what about you and Poe?

Speaker: No, Poe and I are just friends. So it has made the very idea that people saw them as a couple made it into official media.

Speaker: Okay. But Disney and Lucasfilm are cowards and won't put it on screen. Okay. ah There is one brief on screen in Star Wars.

Speaker: There is one brief background kiss in the celebration in the Rise of Skywalker between two of the women in the Resistance. It is brief.

Speaker: The reason it is brief, and I call Lucasfilm and Disney cowards, is that was brief so that it could be cut out for Chinese distribution. Ah, got it. and And that is a big market for the Star Wars and Marvel movies.

Speaker: Disney does not rock the boat. Yeah, that makes sense. I mean, it it doesn't make sense, but it also kind of makes sense. Yeah, cowards, cowards. cowards cowards And andt speaking of the House of Mouse...

Speaker: this is an honorable mention because it's really too soon to see anything. And I'm watching it closely because the MCU vision quest series is currently underway.

Speaker: Right. And it is introducing, um the older real version of Wanda and vision son, Tommy.

Speaker: Um, and the actor playing older Tom, older real Tommy is an openly bisexual actor.

Speaker: And, um, he swears that just like in the comics, in the comics, Tommy is bi. And he swears that the character on the show is too. We're halfway through the season. There's nothing on screen to even hint at it so far.

Speaker: He's got what appears to be a girlfriend and we haven't seen or heard any other. so so it remains to be seen, but the actor himself has spoken about how he appreciates the representation that is present in the character.

Speaker: we we've got four hours to go. We'll see. We'll see if anything happens. Yes. So those are my honorable mentions to squeeze some extras in. Yes. um Now onto the real list in, in no particular order.

Speaker: This one I talked about on an earlier episode, a little bit got kind of off on a little geeky tangent. And that is ah Tim Drake, the third Robin in DC comics.

Speaker: okay um I don't remember how much I mentioned in the episode in my little tangent. I know I tried to keep it briefer there because it wasn't what we were talking about, but it's what we're talking about this time.

Speaker: That's true. oh Where... um Originally, just because introduced in the early mid 90s, as a teenage character, Tim was default.

Speaker: Like all male superhero characters, Tim was straight. Right. Tim had a girlfriend. Um, then in the late nineties, early two thousands, somewhere in there, a new series of teen Titans launched and he, and the then current version of super boy were both in it, both of whom had previously been presented as completely straight. They were presented textually as straight in teen Titans, but there were people who were reading a lot of by coding by gay coding into their interactions.

Speaker: ah So much so that um a a later writer-artist team on Tim's solo book, ah after the comics established Tim as being bi, had said that, no, we seriously, we we saw all of the coding in earlier stories in the Teen Titans stuff and in Earlier solo stuff, we thought that was canon, and that's how we presented him, too.

Speaker: Right. We just, we had that coding in there. We never came out and said it, you know no pun intended, because we thought we wouldn't be allowed to, but we were consciously writing him as coded.

Speaker: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And then... a A story just a few years ago ah established Tim as Bi, a former supporting character from his original solo series who hadn't been seen in years, showed back up.

Speaker: um And you know he had been a stereotypical you know teenage asshole when he was there before. But he shows back up and he's like, hey, you know the reason that I acted that way in high school is that you know I was dealing with figuring out who I was and expresses an interest in Tim. And Tim's like, you know what?

Speaker: the This is not a what the hell are you talking about that I i might be interested to. my And from the from then on, you Tim has been presented as bi. He's in a relationship with that same character, ah which that's my one pet peeve about it, is that they skipped completely from, you know what?

Speaker: I am interested in Bernard, who has expressed an interest in me, Bernard. Bernard and I are boyfriends and so has it ever been. it seems so easy.

Speaker: hey i don't have to you don't have to talk about anything else. Nothing else to discuss here. Well, and... I think that story-wise, they missed out on a lot of good story potential with Tim's journey of self-discovery.

Speaker: yeah you know Figuring out that he had a long-term girlfriend who is also a superhero and also a member of of the Bat family, as it were.

Speaker: and you And there's people to who take exception to, oh, so Tim was just settling for Stephanie. No, no, no, that's not how it works. um But back on bi erasure.

Speaker: But hi as I think about it, I still don't like that they skipped over the journey part of his story. But I do think I know what editorial's thinking was, which was Tim is a popular character.

Speaker: Tim is arguably the most popular Robin of all of them. And I think... They understood because think this was after they had already done the the John Kent ah reveal as as being bi, and they got backlash for that.

Speaker: Okay. And so think... I think they said, okay, we're going to get backlash anyway. If we do explore the journey from point A to point E, that that gives us opportunities to back out.

Speaker: And that gives us that we'll just you know have people pressuring us to back out. So let's just let's skip that and just go straight to to being the new status quo.

Speaker: Got it. Yeah. and no one has said No one from DC has said that, but as I've thought about it, that i having been in the comics fan community for the majority of my life,

Speaker: and seeing all of the just bad faith asshats. It's a, it's a discussion that makes sense and decision that makes sense to have been made for those reasons.

Speaker: Yeah, I could see that. Um, but next up, is I swear there's no this is not establishing a pattern. But next up is Sarah Lance, a.k.a. the White Canary from Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow in the Arrowverse universe of shows from the CW.

Speaker: um She's just a badass character who... you ah started off as being a one-off mention as part of Green Arrow's backstory, ah who died off screen in the pilot episode.

Speaker: Oh, wow. Was, was brought back as, Oh, well, she didn't die. And she became she became this you know badass fighter who showed up and then had a great attitude, had more chemistry with the actress Katie Lotz, had more chemistry with Stephen Amell, who played Green Arrow, than the actress playing the character who in the comics is actually his love interest.

Speaker: Okay. Yeah.

Speaker: whoop As did another character who was just supposed to be an Easter egg that he ended up with on the show. Oh, wow. but um But when she moved over to Legends of Tomorrow, they also gave her an opportunity to have an incredible sense of humor.

Speaker: oh And ah that's when they really played up I don't remember if they introduced it there or not, but Legends is where they played up her by nature.

Speaker: Because on Arrow, she had been the nominal love interest sister who was having a secret fling with Oliver and went off on on the boat trip where he got stranded on the island for five years.

Speaker: Okay. um But on Legends of Tomorrow, she's just you know the snarky captain of the time-traveling group of misfits.

Speaker: And ah you know has has a fling with Supergirl's sister, ends up um in a relationship with... Ava who used to work for a time agency that was trying to stop the legends. But, you know, once she realized that she loves Sarah, she's, she joined the legends. and Okay.

Speaker: But meanwhile, be before Ava came along, know, Sarah had a fling with John Constantine when they brought him on the show. So, okay. who who John was also by on the show too. And Matt Ryan was amazing in the role.

Speaker: ah um I almost put him on here too, but I'm like, no, that's going to establish the pad. That's going to keep the pattern going. And I want to bring, guess that's true.

Speaker: Right. um Next up is Oberyn Martell from game of Thrones. And to explain that, I just have two words, Pedro Pascal.

Speaker: Oh, all right. is That's Pedro Pascal character? Yes. Okay. ah that That was... Nice. i i've I've not watched Game of Thrones. so Before anyone knew who he was, he was in an episode of Buffy.

Speaker: Okay. and Under his real last name. Okay. And and he he was introduced and killed off in the same episode. ah Nice. But Game of Thrones was my first introduction to him.

Speaker: And Game of Thrones being a the harsh, grimdark fantasy world that it was, um it's still, by by nature of that setting,

Speaker: the people in the world were not exactly progressive when it came non-straight relationships. and And Oberyn was pretty much, no, she's hot, I'll do her.

Speaker: He's hot, I'll do him. um What's your problem with that? All right. just he He had a very... Game of Thrones is what made Pedro Pascal, Pedro Pascal. that's I see. is what they um It's what put him in front of everyone's eyes and everyone loved the character.

Speaker: And we we were all very, very sad because this was game of Thrones. Right. Right. yeah, that doesn't end well for much of any anyone, any character on the show.

Speaker: ah see. But he, he was just, he was a fun character and he he ended up being too cocky for his own good. And, uh, yeah, it got, it got gross there at the end.

Speaker: Okay. Yeah. um Next up, this is the one that I was saying on surface level, it's not you know fantasy or or science fiction. But if you've ever watched an episode, oh, God, yes, it was science fiction fantasy.

Speaker: Okay. and And that is Angela Montenegro from Bones. Yeah, I wouldn't have pegged Bones as like a science fiction fantasy type of Oh, those the way they go about their quote unquote forensic science is pure fantasy.

Speaker: I see. Okay. um But Angela was just, she was a fun character from the beginning. Hmm. I watched the pilot and she was my favorite character on the show.

Speaker: I watched the series finale. She was still my favorite character on the show. yeah She was an artistic free spirit who her introduction in the show is going to the airport to pick up the lead character.

Speaker: And she's trying to ask someone at the airport to, ah for information about the incoming flights and where, where she can meet Dr. Brennan.

Speaker: And the guy is just totally ignoring her. So she lifts up her shirt. hu And gets his attention.

Speaker: He answers the question as Brennan is walking up and she's like, please tell me you tried asking first.

Speaker: um But she was also a smart character. her Her purpose on the team was that she was an artist, but she was also a brilliant computer programmer. That's where some of their bogus sci-fi bullshit technology came from. Okay.

Speaker: ah she She programmed the computer that they used that could do unrealistic recreations of crime scenes. ah But several, a few seasons into it, just as they were getting into a will-they-won't-they tension with one of the guys there in the lab, an ex-girlfriend of hers shows up.

Speaker: And they reignite their relationship. All right. And then it ends up falling apart again, and she does end up with um with the guy in the lab very happily for multiple seasons.

Speaker: But and the it was a case where... While, like we were saying about Bi-Erasher, there was never, that I recall, I could be wrong, it's been ages since I watched the whole thing, there was never really a label put on her.

Speaker: But it wasn't Angela is straight. Now Angela is a lesbian. Now Angela is straight again. Right, right. um And fun little aside, this is one of my favorite character quirks of her.

Speaker: In the first season, they were all quarantined in the lab on Christmas. And the authorities arrange for their families to come see them through you know the glass door and talk to them. um you Because it's it's literally Christmas Eve.

Speaker: okay And so at one point ah she says, okay, now when when you guys see my dad, you're probably going to recognize him. So don't freak out, okay?

Speaker: Just don't make a big deal about it. And when her dad shows up, in walks Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top playing himself. Amazing. Okay.

Speaker: And he became a recurring character throughout all 12 or whatever seasons of the show showing up once or twice a season as Angela's dad. They never called him by name on the show. They never mentioned ZZ Top by name on the show.

Speaker: he was just Angela's dad. That's so great. there were There were references to to elements of of Billy Gibbons, like the reference to his guitar, Pearly Gates. Pearly Gates was Angela's middle name.

Speaker: Okay. And so it it was it was great. you I remember when that episode came on and the guest starring credits, I saw you know william William Gibbons.

Speaker: And I was like, that can't be. It's got to be an actor that's named. wait Because if it were the ZZ Top guy, he'd be called Billy Gibbons. ah And in walks Billy Gibbons.

Speaker: That's funny. I love that. I love that. Um, and rounding out the list is Captain Jack Harkness from Dr. Who and Torchwood.

Speaker: Um, Captain Jack is um a rogue time agent from the future who, ah strictly speaking, I guess he doesn't belong on the list because, strictly speaking, Captain Jack is not bisexual.

Speaker: He described himself once as omnisexual. Ah, okay. Because he's from the future. He travels in space and time. He doesn't care gender, species.

Speaker: um Are you a robot? Fine. All right. All right. um And, you know, they're Throughout his brief tenure on Doctor Who, he became popular, and they created a spinoff, Torchwood, that was centered around him. who It was kind of kind of an X-Files-y type thing, but more sci-fi-like.

Speaker: And they they did not shy away from, you if if Jack found someone attractive, Jack found them attractive.

Speaker: yeah he ended up He ended up in a relationship with one of the men on the Torchwood team, but through the course of Season 3, which was really just a miniseries, you we are introduced to... because you Also important to mention that Jack was also became immortal on the show.

Speaker: okay He became immortal um and had been dropped on Earth in the far past, in the distant past, and so had lived...

Speaker: through becoming what was then the present day, the early 21st century. h And we we meet a an adult child of Jack's who has a son herself.

Speaker: And so, obviously, since this is a human daughter who's in her 30s, can presume that, you 40-ish years ago, Jack was in a relationship with a woman.

Speaker: m And it it's just a thing. That's just Jack. Yeah. And, uh, not really called attention to, or like, yeah. Treated differently. Jack.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. And in, in the doctor who episode where David Tennant's doctor was about to regenerate, uh, he's making a fair doctors normally don't get to do this on the show, but he's, he knows he's about to regenerate. So he's making a farewell tour and visiting all of the companions that were on the show in his tenure.

Speaker: Okay. Yeah. And he finds Jack in an alien bar off in space somewhere. And um he you know Jack is kind of eyeing this guy who was a side character in one of the specials that David Tennant had been on.

Speaker: and um And the bartender hands Jack a note. And it says, his name is Alonzo. Because that was the side character's name. And he looks up and he sees Tenet's doctor who, you know, is the one who sent him the note.

Speaker: All right. To let him know that his name's Alonzo. Shoot your shot. Hmm.

Speaker: And that is my list. Pretty excellent list. And we have two very different lists here. Yes. Yeah. But actually, by.org has a list of by characters in media and we'll link to that in the show notes.

Speaker: um But yeah, there's a lot of a lot of characters in there that have maybe only been hinted at offhand, but they're included in the list. So it might worth a look. Now that we've gone through our list, we should ah talk about the probably not by characters that we might want to get with if they were, but of course not explained.

Speaker: anywhere sure go first okay i'll go first um i mentioned glee earlier ah mike chang and or sam evans from glee because um abs abs abs you said abs their abs were characters on the show That's amazing. Okay.

Speaker: I have never seen Blee. I've never even seen one episode of bles so um it at it At its best, it it's an enjoyable show with some fun musical numbers. At its worst, it's an absolute fucking train wreck.

Speaker: Okay. But I, so but I stuck with it through all, all six seasons because something about rewatching it recently, nearly every single character is a horrible, horrible person.

Speaker: Okay. I mean, the series begins with the glee club coach hiding, hiding pot in the quarterback's jacket because he heard him singing in the shower and he hid, hid it in the jacket and turned him in to blackmail him into joining the glee club.

Speaker: Wow.

Speaker: And, and this becomes his trusted mentor and best friend. Oh my gosh. Okay. All right. Um, I mean, It was originally written to be a dark comedy, and it was originally written as a movie, as a dark comedy, with Justin Timberlake playing that teacher who was supposed to be an actual drug addict.

Speaker: Oh, really? Oh, okay. Yes. But was as when it made the transition to TV, it wasn't. And they just announced a revival. Really? okay. Yes.

Speaker: Like yesterday, they announced a revival. Yeah. Um, and, uh, just because the, this, this wouldn't be a list of any kind of favorite characters or characters that I would find hot without, uh, mentioning him, but Nightwang, Dick Grayson, the original Robin, uh, My favorite comics character ever.

Speaker: He canonically, that this is canon in the comics, canonically has the best ass in the DC universe. Well, he comes from a family of acrobats, right? so Yeah.

Speaker: Well, this all started... There there was an artist who... Probably do interesting contortions there, too. Probably. ah there's there's There's an artist who drew a shot of him from behind as he's looking over his shoulder saying something to someone. And that ignited... That's really what you know put the whole you know best ass in the DC universe...

Speaker: into the stratosphere. That's funny. So much so that they, they know what they're doing with it now because that same artist, um, they, they did a series of covers across the DC line a couple of years ago showing,

Speaker: character the character of the given book in various looks that they've had over the years. On the Nightwing cover, they had that artist come back and she drew him various iterations of Robin, the various Nightwing suits all standing there together.

Speaker: The current Nightwing suit, he had his back to the reader looking over his shoulder again. and ah they They also released a a digital comic that was strictly for goofs called Nothing But B-U-T-T, Nightwing.

Speaker: ah ah That's hilarious. Okay. So they, they know it, they lean into it. um Even before all of this happened, there was a low key wedding issue of teen Titans or one of the other Titans was getting married and in civilian clothes, Dick is having this, you know, dramatic ah emotional scene with Bruce Wayne.

Speaker: Mm-hmm. And the artist of the issue drew a bunch of fans in as guest at guests at the wedding here. And there were these three women who were huge Dick Grayson fans at the time.

Speaker: And he had just made the transition from Robin in the traditional Robin costume with you know the the short pants and and all of that um to Nightwing.

Speaker: And The three girls are like, hey, hey, come look. Oh, my God. Have you seen? Oh, I want look at the tush on that one. I wonder what he looks like in shorts.

Speaker: Nice. So and they a recent run of the book had him and he's currently. in a relationship with Barbara Gordon.

Speaker: ah But there's there was, i don't even remember what the line was. the They have this wonderful flirtatious back and forth.

Speaker: ah There was something about, in have one line, about ah Barbara is Batgirl, but also has been Oracle, basically like a a supercomputer information broker for superheroes.

Speaker: And Dick was coordinating some stuff from her computer as Oracle. And she's like, what have we what have we said about you know using the other's identities? it's like We should only do it in bed?

Speaker: Wow. Yeah, it was yeah excellent. Chef's kiss. Chef's kiss. All right. that That's my list. I am i am perfectly normal about Nightwing.

Speaker: I like him a perfectly normal amount. Perfectly normal. Perfectly normal amount. Yes. What about yours? um Yeah, I mean, i tend to, with men, ah lean a little more towards masculine men so james bond any of the any of the portrayals of james bond i would totally want to get with ah any actor george leisenby okay maybe not that one otherwise sean connery pierce brosnan all of them yeah

Speaker: All of them down. ah Video game characters. So they definitely have not, you know, hinted at any sort of non-straight sexuality for Nathan Drake or Sully.

Speaker: and Those are the two characters. male characters in the uncharted games and yeah i i'd be down so not not having played them what are your thoughts then on on marky mark and tom holland is those characters well you see i've yeah i've i've not seen the uncharted live action movie i have like a sort of thing against video game movies, even though I am a video game player and I just don't generally don't watch video game movies. So I really have no big opinion about Tom Holland and Marky Mark, although I neither of them are really my type.

Speaker: So the what about the fan casting that people wanted of lovable rogue Nathan Fillion? Yes, that is much more my type. Yeah, anything, any character the Nathan Fillion is portraying, yes, would be a character that I would want to get with. Yeah.

Speaker: Nathan Fillion's great. Even Guy Gardner? Which character is that? The Green Lantern from um Superman and Lanterns. Yeah, yeah, pretty much. Yeah, I'll i'll allow it.

Speaker: ah Imagine all of the things that he could make with the power ring. Exactly. Exactly. exactly Well, of course, we want to know what your favorite bi characters are. Maybe characters that we already mentioned.

Speaker: Maybe characters we haven't mentioned. ah So email that along to us. We want to hear from you. we want to hear your feedback on the show in general as well. So podcast at by men unfiltered.com. Please send us an email. Tell us who your favorite bi characters are. I would I'd like to know. Yeah.

Speaker: Speaking of our email address, Sam. Oh, yes. Go ahead should Should we mention that after we asked, we did receive? We did receive. Yeah, we asked ah about ah we asked people to send dick pics. And for a while there, I was not sure if it was going to happen. And I was actually kind of surprised.

Speaker: that our listenership did not. Cause when you have people not asking for dick pics, you get sent them and now we're asking and we didn't get any, but I am happy to report that we finally received one.

Speaker: Yes. Yes, we did. Very happy about that. Yeah. Just before we started recording this episode, so we who won't go into like who or what the email is about, but thank you, person who you know who you are that sent us a dick pic. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, I mean, I i guess maybe you know taking so long means that that our listeners respect us. I guess. but But they didn't respect our wishes.

Speaker: I know. be yeah ah Yes. And of course, so if people want to send us dick pics or well wishes or feedback or anything of the sort, where can they do that? Grayson.

Speaker: They can send it to that aforementioned email address, podcast at by men unfiltered.com. And if you are good with us sharing it on the show, obviously being an audio podcast, we cannot share the dick pic on the show.

Speaker: And we wouldn't anyway. Yeah, we wouldn't because, you know, there's all sorts of deplatforming that could happen and yeah and all of that. But if you're good with us sharing the rest of the content on the show, just add OK for air.

Speaker: somewhere in that email. And you can also follow us at Byman Unfiltered on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and X, Twitter, ah call it whatever you like.

Speaker: And you can also find us on bluesky bymanunfiltered.com. Yes, indeed. Next we've got a really good episode for you. It is and a personal story. It is Alex's story. So we did an interview with another, a fellow bi man who told us all about his journey. And we are going to present that to you next week.

Speaker: Yes, and it it's an awesome one. ah i i'm I'm doing horrible at doing the tease this week. I'm not a good tease this week.

Speaker: Normally we're both good teases today. Yeah. I don't know what it is, but next, next week, the a really great episode the podcast. You'll want to stick around for it in like seven days. You'll be able to listen yourself to this interview story that we both really enjoyed.
