The Amazing Rewatch: Hi. You can start this time. I feel like I start everything. Okay. Here we go. Hello, everyone. Welcome to Season 19, Episode 9. um We just recorded and watched, so it's are fresh on our mind. Very fresh. And so we were just in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Ernie and Cindy were team number one. They used the W-turn U-turn Bill and Kathy. And Lawrence and Zach were eliminated because Bill and Kathy had to U-turn someone to one stay in.
The Amazing Rewatch: Some navigation issues, things like that. So Ernie and Cindy are the first to depart at 9.01 And the clue says drive yourself to the or drive to the statue of Hans Christian Andersen.
The Amazing Rewatch: Once there, you'll find your next clue. So they get to the statue, not too far away or hard to find. And the clue there is a roadblock and it says who's ready to take fairytale ride.
The Amazing Rewatch: um So this person has to memorize a poem by Hans Christian Andersen. Once they have learned it by heart, they choose a bicycle and follow the map printed on the front wheel to the theater museum.
The Amazing Rewatch: Then relying only on their memory, they recite the poem verbatim to a period drama critic with dramatic flair. And if they don't pass, they must return to the statue and start over. So Cindy is going to do the roadblock. When it says on the front wheel, it's kind of like insert inside the pegs of wheel. Yeah, like the spokes. the circular. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: And has a tourist map. Yeah. So the poem, it says, it's just short. It says, to move, to breathe, to fly, to float, to gain all while you give, to roam the roads of lands remote, to travel is to live. And this is actually like, I i have heard the whole poem before, but to travel is to live is like one of my favorite quotes. I even had it on like my my first website.
The Amazing Rewatch: Mm-hmm. My first, because I'm a travel agent, so very fitting. Yeah, I do like that one a lot. So Cindy's doing the roadblock and as she's sitting there trying to memorize the poem, a whole tour bus unloads at the statue. And they're standing and sitting in front of it taking pictures and stuff. And she's like, okay.
The Amazing Rewatch: The poem is like printed kind of, not printed, it's engraved on the statue kind of like on the bottom close to the ground. And so people are just like standing there right in front of her.
The Amazing Rewatch: But she does go to the theater. It doesn't seem like she has a hard time finding it. And she passes it on the first try. And this all happens before the next people even depart, which is Bill and Kathy at 1034.
The Amazing Rewatch: So if we're remembering last leg, how we were saying that the bunny detour was so easy. Why are they an hour and a half behind? Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: They still had to finish the butter detour before they even went the next one. That's true, but they were like almost done. The butter might have taken way thought. guess that's true. And then Andy and Tommy depart at 1039, but they were on the mat at the same time. Yeah, we were both confused by that. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: looks like they ran up right after. but um So, Cindy, when she finished the roadblock, her clue says, drive um to Billund, Denmark and find Legoland Park and find the pirate carousel ride to get your next clue.
The Amazing Rewatch: Denmark is home of the Lego and this is the original Legoland, sounds like. So for some reason, I thought Legos were from like China or Japan. Oh, no.
The Amazing Rewatch: But they're from here. And they said like, a anyway, Lego is a popular toy company from Denmark that makes interlocking plastic bricks. We know that. The company was founded 1932 and
The Amazing Rewatch: And comes from the phrase leg got, which means play well. And there's
The Amazing Rewatch: um hundreds, they've produced hundreds of billions of bricks. Well, it said like 5 million a day. Yeah. Phil said that when he was talking about this task.
The Amazing Rewatch: That's crazy. Yeah. I mean, they're small. But that's a lot. And they're expensive. Lego sets are really expensive. Yeah, but they're worth it, the extra price, rather than like the knockoff Legos. The knockoff, yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: um Current estimates are about 100 to 130 million Legos are produced each day. Wow. That's about 4 to 5 million every hour. um More than 1,000 pieces every second.
The Amazing Rewatch: That's crazy. Yeah. Lego manufactures thousands of different types of elements in dozens of colors. They have major factories in Denmark, Hungary, Czech Republic, Mexico, China, and Vietnam.
The Amazing Rewatch: The precision is remarkable. Molds are made to a tolerance about.0002 millimeters. millimeters Yeah, you have to. Or like they don't fit. A brick made today will fit perfectly with one made decades ago.
The Amazing Rewatch: With over 100 million pieces produced every day, Lego creates enough bricks daily that if laid end to end, they would stretch for well over 1,500 miles, roughly the distance from Salt Lake City to Chicago every single day.
The Amazing Rewatch: Anyways, Lego on. Tell us the rest about, oh, kids' still more? Oh. Oh, yeah, because we were already in Denmark. Yeah, we were talking about Denmark last time. So, yeah, and Ernie and Cindy got the clue to go to Lake Oland.
The Amazing Rewatch: um The other two teams arrived to this roadblock. Kathy does the roadblock and Tommy does the roadblock. They both have a hard time finding the theater. Yeah. Amani and Marcus depart 1143. Oh, wait I do want to point this out.
The Amazing Rewatch: So we see like we see Kathy riding away on her bike. And there's like a shot of like this town square in the city of Copenhagen. And I'm like, Sadie, pause that right now. And we had like rewind. But like the building that it was showing right in front of us on the screen was the hotel that me and my cousin and my friend stayed at when we had our layover in Copenhagen. I was like, oh my gosh, I have right there. you said you didn't go to the Hans Christian Andersen statue because it was too away. No, didn't Little Mermaid statue.
The Amazing Rewatch: I didn't know that that Hans Christian Andersen statue was that close though. I would have done that. yeah um But yeah, that town square was like so cool. And there's like a shopping place like right next to it. And I was like, right over there's a little metro station. And yeah, it's like a really fun area of the city. And that hotel was Really nice and like not crazy expensive.
The Amazing Rewatch: So when we go, let'll we'll stay there. Nice.
The Amazing Rewatch: Cool. they, Monty Marcus depart at 1143. They have $350 for this lake or $150? I didn't hear actually. think $350. Monty does the roadblock.
The Amazing Rewatch: And while she's trying to memorize the poem, Marcus is trying to distract her. He's like, red bus, yellow 11, 12, like saying there was like, saying random things if I distract her now, she nothing will distract her on the way there.
The Amazing Rewatch: you just don't know who you're running with dog. ah Yeah. He was like so surprised that she got back so fast. And like Andy and Bill were surprised too, because Kathy and Tommy had left yeah quite a bit before her and they still weren't back yet.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yes. Cause Kathy, she finally makes it to the theater and she gets one word wrong. So she has to go back and then go back. And Jeremy and Sandy depart the,
The Amazing Rewatch: The pits start. The pits start at 12.08. Get to the... I was surprised at like the... That's three hours difference. Yeah. And it didn't seem like they were all that far apart. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: I do think the Butterfine took a lot longer than we thought. Maybe. Sandy does the roadblock. um So...
The Amazing Rewatch: In the meantime, Ernie and Cindy get to Legoland and they get the clue. It's like in a big Lego box. And they have to piece the Legos together while spinning on the pirate carousel. They can only work on the puzzle while the ride is in motion. So it's kind of like the teacups at Disneyland. They just spin in circles like that. But you're in like a pirate. It's like a pirate crow's nest. Crow's nest thing.
The Amazing Rewatch: And Kathy gets back to the theater on her second try and passes. Tommy gets to the theater finally for the first try. As he's walking in and Kathy's walking out, she says, you have to do drama because they not only have to memorize the poem and do it correctly, but they have to be dramatic. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: And she says that to him, you have to do drama. And he gets her up on stage and he literally doesn't move his body at all. Yeah, he's like the least dramatic ever. He gets the poem right, but he is told that he needs more drama, please. So ask all the way back to try again.
The Amazing Rewatch: And when he gets back there, Andy's like, Tommy's mad. I've never seen him like this. And he like reads the poem and he's like, that's what I said. can't have to this again. Well, he's like flailing his arms because he's trying to, I think he's been trying to be dramatic while he's reading it. So it looks like he's mad. so Andy's like confused. Why is he so mad? Maybe. But yeah, but Tommy was like, that's what I said. And I'm like, well, that wasn't the problem. He said you need to do more drama. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: It wasn't that you got it wrong. Yeah. And when Sandy tries her first time, she also didn't do enough drama and she has to go back. Mm-hmm. um So Tommy passes it off and then Sandy passes it off.
The Amazing Rewatch: So teams are making their way to Lego land. Ernie and Cindy are still working on their Lego puzzle. But the clue when they finish it up, it's like a little picture of a train station in Hamburg. hamburg um This says drive yourself across the border into Germany and make your way to the Hamburg train station to find your next clue.
The Amazing Rewatch: They... I think they figure have to figure out on their own that they have to drive themselves because all it is is a picture of the Hamburg train station. And Hamburg is like just like right across the border from Denmark. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: So I don't think it takes them very long. But yeah. Amani and Marcus get to – did you say that? Get to Legoland next? Yeah. Yeah, they get there next. And they're not happy about the spinning. No, Amani is really struggling with the motion sickness and they both think they're almost going to throw up, but they finish it There's like barf bags in the in the little ride with them. Yeah. They're both like, wo do you do you struggle with spinning rides?
The Amazing Rewatch: Monty Marcus finish the clue. Andy and Tommy arrive. Sandy and Jeremy arrive. Sandy Jeremy really struggle with the pieces. As they're spinning, one of their pieces flies out. So when they're almost done with their first try, they have to go and get another pack That wasn't their first try, though. That was like their third try. that they well the But their first pack. Their first puzzle.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah, they had like, do three different spins and figure out that they lost a piece as they were spinning. So they have to go back and get a new puzzle and start over. um Sandy said that this is the worst thing that they have done so far. Yeah. It didn't even look that crazy, but it really affected her. Andy and Tommy, and they didn't get sick at all. They said they're always, like, spinning. Yeah, snowboarders are spinning all the time. Yeah. So they were not sick at all, but...
The Amazing Rewatch: um So the teams start getting to the train station. They have to travel by train 305 miles to Belgium, um Brussels, Belgium. This is the third country of this leg of the race. they make their Then make your way to the European Parliament building to find your next clue.
The Amazing Rewatch: There's only one train to Brussels that day, so they'll think they think they're going to all be on the same train. Yeah, and it doesn't leave until 1230 a.m. Yeah. So it's like an overnight train. So as they're walking away, the This is Ernie and Cindy. Yeah. The cameraman focuses on their tickets that are just on the ground. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: They walk away from them. Not good. Don't realize that they had dropped them. ah So Jeremy and Sandy finish the clue. Bill and Kathy finally get to Legoland. They finish the clue. um All the teams get to the train station, figure out they're on the same train.
The Amazing Rewatch: That's not leaving until later. Ernie Cindy figure out that they lost their tickets and they have to buy more. Well, no, they don't. Well, they try to buy more. They try to buy more. But yeah, it's 77 euro. And they're like, we don't have enough for that.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. So they get on the train anyways, because they have they have tickets from um Hamburg to Cologne. And then it's the Cologne to Brussels Lake that they don't have tickets. Those are the tickets that they lost. So they get on the first train. And it's like an overnight and they have beds and they like are sleeping. Marcus is like way taller than these beds. His legs are like poking out the door.
The Amazing Rewatch: Well, Cindy says, we have to talk to the conductor when he gets here. but Yeah. absolutely A woman. Don't assume that train conductors are all men. And she says, there's no, and they're like, can we print these off here or something? And she said, do you have your receipt? And they said, no. And she's like, well, there's nothing I can do for you. I'm sorry. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: And Cindy's like, we go from four hour lead to having no tickets. And she's really stressed out. And Ernie is just kind of like, we'll figure it out. Don't worry. We'll figure it out. Don't worry. Yeah. And Andy and Tommy are like, it seems like Ernie's never really worried and Cindy does enough worrying for the both of them. Yeah, basically.
The Amazing Rewatch: Which is true. So they get on their connecting train to Brussels and they're just thinking. They're just hoping that nobody checks their tickets. And if they do, they'll just say like, oh, we dropped them when we were running between trains.
The Amazing Rewatch: Or Or I'll go hide in the bathroom or something. But nobody ends up coming around and checking tickets. And I think it kind of made the other teams mad. Andy and Tommy were like, so nobody's checking tickets. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: So they got really lucky that. Yeah, they did. And I'm surprised. Well. I wonder if there's like a penalty for that because they did pay for the tickets. They just didn't have them. Yeah. So I guess if they never checked, then it's not really yeah a penalty. So...
The Amazing Rewatch: I guess we will see maybe. Yeah. um So teams get off the train and they go get taxis. Bill and Kathy are the first one into a taxi. This train station seems really busy and there's really long taxi lines. So teams are kind of leaving the station to try and catch taxis before. go like out to the street. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: And they get to this parliament building, European parliament building. and Which I have been to before. I have. Yeah, because I'm into Brussels. Oh, yeah, with Jeff.
The Amazing Rewatch: He says, walk in the shoes of muscles of the muscles. Walk in the shoes of muscles from Brussels. So Jean-Claude Van Damme is apparently from Brussels and he's famous for being like a bodybuilder. And they have to strip down to your bare essentials and oil up and practice poses to flex in front of the judges. They have to get a score of 12 or more to pass off.
The Amazing Rewatch: So they all have to change into these tiny bikinis or Speedos. This is so funny. And oil up in tanning lotion. This is one that I remember. this i don't remember this one, actually. Yeah, this is a task that I remember. So I said at the beginning of the season, I remember some of the season, but not... Very much like I remember Bill and Kathy and yeah and Andy and Tommy and I remembered episode Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: With like when Bill and Kathy couldn't find the clue. Anyways. You would think that I would remember this because it's pretty memorable and they are all so uncomfortable. Yeah. Well, like, so Bill and Kathy, they're older.
The Amazing Rewatch: look great. I know. I was like, man, I hope I look like that when I'm in my 60s. Yeah. Everybody I think looks great. Yeah. They're all so uncomfortable. And like, of course, it would be so uncomfortable. is' weird. I mean, the men especially.
The Amazing Rewatch: Like the women, I think, ah like you see bikinis every day, but speedos are not like a thing that people just wear at most beaches. Maybe in Europe they do, but. And they were little Speedos. Yeah. In Europe, they do. Did I tell you when I went to the Topless Beach in Spain?
The Amazing Rewatch: I felt like they probably should have blurred a little bit of the the men. I was like, wow, that's... Yeah. Yeah. But honestly, also Kathy, she's like, my my children are going to die when they see this. And I'm going to die when they see this. It's going to be a family death.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. And Bill has really good muscles for an older guy. And honestly, I think they all looked great. I was like, yeah, yeah you guys should like... own it I should just do this for a living but anyways so yeah they have to work with a professional bodybuilder to learn 12 different moves and they have to go in a sequence and you have to flow from one to the other and you have to be flexing correctly and then timing correctly you have to smile yeah smile and play with the crowd and there's three judges that you have to get a score of 12 to pass off
The Amazing Rewatch: These judges were not messing around. No, this is what I'm talking about. Some of them are so strict. Like the judges last episode with the dancing, they were just basically like, if you're moving your feet, you passed it off.
The Amazing Rewatch: This one, it's like, they're so critical. So um everyone's like oiling each other up and Ernie and Cindy go first and they get a score of nine. Then Andy and Tommy go and they get a score of four.
The Amazing Rewatch: Then Imani and Marcus go and they get 12 on their first try. Yeah. I think people really liked, like, they worked really hard on their showmanship. I think that's a big of it. And they, like, The crowd was liking them, which made Marcus like, yeah, like they were like feeding off each other. And so they, yeah. Yeah. So when they the clue, says make your way to park Elizabeth for the pit stop for this leg of the race. And they run out and their driver doesn't actually know where this is. So there went to this little shop next door to ask somebody on the internet to look up where the specific gazebo within the park is at. Mm-hmm.
The Amazing Rewatch: Andy and Tommy go again. They only get five points this time. It's just they're not very like... When they're not in front of a crowd, they're very personable and have a lot of energy and nice and yeah talkative and, you know... They were, like, so shy and, like... Yeah, in front of the crowd, they were very shy and they didn't like to smile, really, or give ah any showmanship. So they weren't getting very many points.
The Amazing Rewatch: So then Ernie and Cindy go again and Ernie is, like, winking at people. He's, like, smiling like a maniac and, like, winking and I'm, like... a little crazy but they got 12 points and they pass it off and so they run out and their driver knows where this gazebo is and then bill and kathy go they only get three points they get a one way better than that yeah And then Jeremy and Sandy go and they get 13. Yeah. But Jeremy and Sandy have really good bodies. Yeah. But I don't think their showmanship was as good. I'm like, you shouldn't be judging on the body. Nobody actually trained to be Nobody was like ready for this. Right.
The Amazing Rewatch: Like, I think Bill and Kathy should have got way more points and Jeremy and Sandy shouldn't have got that many points. Yeah. On their first try. So, team number one ended up being Imani and Marcus. And they went a trip to Panama.
The Amazing Rewatch: And then Phil says... Phil says that means that you're the first team to leave for the next leg. And the next leg starts right now. And then it says to be continued. Yep.
The Amazing Rewatch: So we don't actually know what happens with the rest of the teams, ah but this is Amani and Marcus's first first place, I think. So that's great. Yeah. And it was ah kind of a wild, like spread out lay. We started in Denmark and did the roadblock and then now we're in Belgium doing, well, there was no detour.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yet. Yeah, yet. Well, but we already made it to a pit stop. Yeah, so this leg is technically over. It's just like a continuation. there was no idea toward this leg. I wonder if will be an elimination if the last team will keep racing. We don't know.
The Amazing Rewatch: This is also last episode we said, it's crazy. but This is our first time to Denmark. This is our first time to Belgium as well. So this is three countries in a row. Malawi, um Denmark, Belgium. that Like it's a first for the race. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: um I'm not going to talk about Germany because we've been to Germany a lot. But I'll talk about Brussels a little bit. So it's the capital of Belgium. Yeah. It's often called the capital of Europe because it hosts many European Union institutions.
The Amazing Rewatch: um It's about 200,000 people in the city, about 2.2 million in the metro area. It has its official languages are French and Dutch.
The Amazing Rewatch: Their currency is a Euro. I don't think they like it when you speak French in Brussels, though. Really? Yeah. so Okay. So, me and Jeff went to Paris, and then we took the train to Bruges.
The Amazing Rewatch: Or maybe it was the other way around. No, it wasn't. We took the train they took the train to Bruges, and then we went to Brussels and flew home from there. And... In Bruges, they speak French. So, like, i you know, we'd say, like, merci. And er ive just about said, por favor. Bonjour. Yeah, like like the common French phrases that you know. But then when we got to the train station in Brussels and we like said some of the French phrases, people were giving us dirty looks. Really? Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: they They speak they Dutch in that part of the country. I'm pretty sure there's like a line that's like, this part speaks Dutch, this part speaks French. But belgium Belgian is not a language.
The Amazing Rewatch: it's They speak Dutch and French.
The Amazing Rewatch: Okay. Yeah. So watch where you are until you're going to get dirty looks. Because I would say like merci and they would like look at me like, Like, okay. Yeah. So it says English is widely spoken. yeah um But they have three official languages, French, Dutch, and french dutch and German.
The Amazing Rewatch: um ah Brussels began as a small settlement around 979 In the Middle Ages, it grew into a wealthy trading center. Yeah.

The Amazing Rewatch: Belgium became independent and bell and Brussels became its capital in 1830. And today Brussels serves as an administrative part of the European Union union and NATO.
The Amazing Rewatch: um
The Amazing Rewatch: It sits between the French-speaking South and the Dutch-speaking North. And it has mild summers, cool winters, frequent rain.
The Amazing Rewatch: Snow happens occasionally but doesn't last long.
The Amazing Rewatch: um The city's central square considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. It has, like, garth gothic architecture. it's amazing. Yeah, it looks like Like, I'm going to find some pictures and show you. We'll post these on our Instagram to actually put some stuff on our social media. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: um Food in Brussels is famous for like Belgian waffles, French fries. i hate so many waffles. Yeah. It looks good. Moules frites, Belgian chocolate and beer.
The Amazing Rewatch: And yeah, we we didn't have beer, but we had we made chocolate and we had um a lot of fries and a lot of waffles.
The Amazing Rewatch: It's a very multicultural city. Nearly 40% of residents were born outside of Belgium. um I also think I got it backwards. it's They speak French in Brussels, but they speak Dutch in Bruges.
The Amazing Rewatch: There is an excellent public transportation network. They do have a lot of biking paths. um Brussels sprouts are named after the city because they were widely cultivated here.
The Amazing Rewatch: Belgium has more castles per square mile than almost any other country in the world. The city's airport is one of Europe's largest... Oh, yeah. Like, that's just, like, their main town square. Yeah, so she's showing me a video of the town square. It looks very pretty. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: The city's airport is one of Europe's largest chocolate-selling locations. and
The Amazing Rewatch: Belgium has compulsory voting for citizens resulting in consistent consistently high voter turnout. um Yeah, that looks really pretty. i would love to go there. It's really cool.
The Amazing Rewatch: Just like everything is just so grand and old and... And this is where I realized that Jeff is a horrible photographer. Because like every picture he took, I'm like, that is awful. I also was like at my very heaviest at this point. So I think I just like wasn't happy with what I looked like in general. But I'm like, that's the worst picture you've ever taken. and every picture was like that.
The Amazing Rewatch: He's not an Instagram husband. No. Anyway, but yeah, it's a really it's a really cool city. And we did like a walking tour. so we got to walk around. and So like the EU, the European Union, their headquarters their headquarters are in Brussels right now. But the headquarters change every few years, I think, or every year or something. I can't remember what it was. But just so that like one um one city doesn't have it all the time.
The Amazing Rewatch: I wonder if they stay in Brussels or just like go out yeah into the countryside. It'll be very interesting. But we'll watch soon and yeah. no Bye.
