Introduction and Episode Setup

00:00:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the daily English Premier League podcast and the daily Newcastle podcast. I'm back on there as well after my earlier crossover from the Liverpool podcast, if you recognise my voice. My name is Louis Easton and I have got so much to unpack in today's episode.

West Ham vs Newcastle Match Recap

00:01:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Last night, there was a terrific battle between West Ham and Newcastle United. And of course, tonight in the Champions League, Liverpool host PSG.
00:01:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Plenty to talk about there as well. But we'll start off with that West Ham-Newcastle game, shall we? That was absolute carnage. Unbelievable.
00:01:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah You look at the stats behind that game. 51-49 possession But... and nine shots each but It was Newcastle who came out on top. Mind you, a very nervy end to the game.
00:01:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Going into this game, West Ham scored five goals in their last five games, winning their last two, including that shock win at the Emirates. ah Newcastle went to the London Stadium after losing their last two games in all competition, their last game being a home loss in extra time to Brighton.
00:02:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, Isak started his first match of March, definitely one for Liverpool to worry about for Sunday. I'll allude to that more in this podcast, I imagine, as a Liverpool fan. And the Toon Army also scored eight in their last five without keeping a single clean sheet.

Ian Mackay's Reaction and Newcastle's League Standing

00:02:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was 1-0 in the end, Bruno Guimaraes' goal being the only difference between the two. And he also picked up the man of the match award, player of the match award, whatever you want to call it. But just to give you a stat that underlines his importance to this Newcastle team this season, he has been fouled 92 times this season.
00:02:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
times this season The second most is also Newcastle player Anthony Gordon and Matthias Cunha. They have 58.
00:02:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that means there is a 34 foul gap between Bruno Guimaraes and second place in the Premier League out of every single player this season.
00:03:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
That just underlines his importance, his willingness to get stuck in. And ah what a terrific performance as well, getting the only goal. um And I'm not going to talk too much about this match because I have a Ian Mackay, ah who gives his reaction to all of the action ah between West Ham and Newcastle. I'm going to hand over to him right now.

Liverpool vs PSG Champions League Preview

00:09:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was Ian Mackay speaking from the Daily Newcastle. I'm sure if you're listening to this on the Daily Newcastle podcast, you'll recognise that voice by now. And you won't need me to remind you of who that is.
00:09:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Newcastle, as Ian mentioned, in sixth place on the same amount of points as Manchester City, only behind by six on goal difference. um still hoping for that champions league football at the end of the season with a final on sunday there were plenty of questions asked that i've seen about nick pope being in goal and many newcastle fans I forgot to ask Ian if he agrees, would prefer to see Dubravka start so in the League Cup final on Sunday. um They're worried that he would get pressed by Arnaz Lott's Liverpool.
00:10:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a very scary press, to be fair, and um that could cost a goal. But, you know, kept a clean sheet, ah got a knock towards the end of that game as well.
00:10:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So you can't give him too much criticism for last night's performance. ah Looking at West Ham, however, on the other side of the coin, they remain in 16th place, ah still 16 points from the drop, you know, plenty of ah gap there. And I don't think that will be...
00:10:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah exploited I would like to give a special mention to the West Ham goalkeeper, Alphonse Areola. If he wasn't in goal last night, he I think it could have been a lot more.
00:11:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah He made some very important saves. I'd also like to give a mention to Bowen and Kudus. ah I think they were very harshly criticised today. uh by uh by Fopmob, Opta, all of those who gave give out the stats at the end of the game Bowen got a 6.1 I don't think that's fair looking at the last 10 minutes especially he seemed to be at the heart of every attack really trying to make things happen Kudus I thought was doing similarly but Newcastle defended very well uh towards the end of the game as he and
00:11:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
alluded to. ah Lucas Paquetar is a player that I expected a lot more of this season. I looked at him and I thought he was absolutely world-class ah last year.
00:11:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Has all of the technical ability, dribbling, you name it. um But struggled, I think, ah getting overloaded in midfield by, you know, that brilliant Newcastle midfield in Joel Linton, Tonali and man of the match Bruno G. But Paquetar is one of those players where he'll put in a nice cross, do a nice dribble every now and then.
00:12:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
But when it comes down to all of the dirty work, he doesn't seem to get too involved from whenever I've watched West Ham this season. ah Looking at Aaron Cresswell now, I thought he was terrific and against Leicester City last time out in the Premier League.
00:12:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Struggled today with that Newcastle of attack. um He's one of these players that used to play on the left-back role, but he's quite slow now, ah and he's given he's been given a role where he can drift around, but not necessarily do as much running.
00:12:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah And struggled a bit today, unfortunately. I think a player the player who struggled the most recently, who scored against Leicester City, Thomas Socek, he missed that sitter early on.
00:13:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And again, as I mentioned before, it's a game that could have gone either way. And if that Socek goal went in early, that really could have given West Ham the confidence boost ah that they needed for the rest of the match.
00:13:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the two players who I think were the best were Scales and Wan-Bissaka from a West Ham perspective. Wan-Bissaka especially, sort of playing beyond ah his limits at a West Ham.
00:13:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Fullback, wingback as well. Out of possession with five at the back. In possession with ah sort of like two at the back, really, when Cresswell goes forward.
00:13:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But when Bersaka really causing issues ah for Tino Livramento couldn't really contain him for the majority of the match, went up to the byline several times. And that's the energy that you require from a fullback who's so pacey. And as we've seen this season, such a threat going forward.
00:14:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So, disappointing one for West Ham fans, ah but it's definitely the motivation that Newcastle needed ah to go into Sunday's final, their second Carabao Cup final in two years. ah If you remember last time out, losing out very...
00:14:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, not very narrowly, but losing out to a Manchester United either two years or three years ago. I can't remember which one was the Brighton one. I can't remember which one was more recently. Anyway, I should know more.
00:14:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we will move on from that match last night, West Ham versus Newcastle. And we will focus more on the Champions League up next, something that Newcastle very well may be competing in next season.
00:14:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Liverpool versus PSG after this short break.
00:16:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, looking at tonight's match, Liverpool versus PSG at Anfield, a stadium that has played such a strong part in European football for decades and decades now.
00:16:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It's been... Talked about a lot as Liverpool's advantage after scraping, and I mean by the skin of their teeth, scraping that 1-0 win ah in Paris last week.
00:16:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Harvey Elliott's last-minute winner basically hit 47 seconds after he came onto onto the pitch with his first touch after replacing Mo Salah, who had no luck or game. ah But something interesting that I'd like to mention...
00:16:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
PSG manager Luis Enrique in his press conference said whoever wins this tie goes into the final. So he's ruling out Real Madrid straight away.
00:17:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think that's true at all. Real Madrid won the Champions League. Last season, um barely changed their squad since other than now having Kylian Mbappe, who's finally found his shooting boots after an average start to his ah club in terms of his contributions up front.
00:17:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
But now scoring for fun, it seems like. ah They will have plenty of players available. Obviously, they struggled with the right back role all season with lu Lucas Vasquez. But, you know, talking about Real Madrid is for another time.
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Maybe next round if Arsenal, well, when Arsenal go through. And if Real Madrid go through, which I think they will. But back to PSG. um They went to 12th place Stad Rennes on the weekend and won 4-1 with goals from Bradley Barcola, who didn't start last week, did start ah this week.
00:18:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Gonzalo Ramos and a stoppage time brace. For Usman Dembele. Now that's a player I want to focus on a lot. Because Usman Dembele was terrifying going forward.
00:18:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Robertson really didn't have an answer for his attacks. And his dribbling was just unbelievable. And just remember this. Usman Dembele was deemed a failure at Barcelona. After they bought him...
00:18:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
for 105 million euros plus a reported 40 million euros that meant he was once the second most expensive player of all time alongside paul pogba to manchester united from juventus only beaten by uh the player that he was sort of replacing almost at barcelona at the time uh neymar who went to psg that uh summer and we all saw how that worked out But at Barcelona, he had 24 goals and 34 assists in six years in 127 appearances. For PSG, he is only six goals away from his all-time Barcelona record in his second season with the club.

PSG's Tactical Setup and Challenges at Anfield

00:19:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bearing in mind, two years at PSG, six years at Barcelona. He's got 20 goals and five assists in 23 Ligue 1 matches this season. He started only 16. Now, as a player, what can I say? He uses both feet, taking corners with both feet, and his dribbling has been phenomenal.
00:19:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's got all the tricks, he's got the bursts of pace, and he's a very humble player as well off the pitch. You know, quite shy when it comes to the cameras, willing to give other players the credit more than himself.
00:19:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
um The difference, I'd say, with this match, ah it's Anfield for one thing, but secondly, in the French League, they get a lot more time and space. ah I understand Liverpool gave PSG a lot of time on the ball, but in the box, crowded, ah not willing to let them through too many times. However, nine shots on target.
00:20:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
All saved by Alisson. Alisson will be in goal again, obviously, this week. He was the difference in the first leg. ah But it all comes down to the French attack. ah The PSG attack, rather.
00:20:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And Usman Dembele... he He just scares you as an opposition fan because you look at him and you look at his track record this season, as I mentioned, and, you know, that's a player that can provide and score.
00:20:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's um I mean, i'm I'm a Liverpool fan. I find it absolutely terrifying. ah It will probably be Robertson again at left back. Kostas Timikas did start so on the weekend against Southampton. Had an awful game.
00:20:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really awful. um Robertson came on in the second half. We all saw what happened.
00:21:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's sort of strange to think, you know, what could PSG do with their starting lineup? Because Kvica Kovac Scalier is a player that can play anywhere across the front as well.
00:21:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
He played at that sort of false nine. ah He didn't start on the weekend against Stadren, by the way, came on only after 65 minutes. He was rested for this match, but he was a sort of drifting false number nine. He had a goal disallowed.
00:21:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
He can also play with both feet. His one goal in the Champions League for PSG came when he was playing on the right, which he scored with his left foot in a 7-0 thrashing against Brest.
00:21:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Also for Georgia, he played in the Euros in a strike partnership with a joint top scorer ah of that tournament, Georges Mikatadze.
00:21:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And he was doing the press run in the lead up to this match. he He was asked about what ah he felt about last week ah losing in such cruel fashion. This is what he said.
00:22:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:22:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Abrupt ending. Sounding a lot like Maurizio Pochettino as well in that press conference. First time hearing his voice. A little bit of a jump scare. um But he makes a good point. you know um It's just whether they can weather the storm of that Anfield atmosphere.
00:23:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We've seen the very best players completely crumble under the lights at Anfield. you know Earlier this season, Real Madrid went to Anfield. We all saw what happened there. Mbappe...
00:23:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Got completely closed down by Connor Bradley in probably my favourite moment of the season as a Liverpool fan. And also um missing a penalty in that game as well against Kovine Kelleher in goal, who will also probably be leaving Liverpool this summer.
00:23:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um... But it's a good point that he makes about just playing their game. And PSG completely played their game and definitely deserved to win.
00:23:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah He said it felt unfair last week ah after was in the dressing room. But they have got to come to Anfield with a chip on their shoulder.
00:23:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Mentioned PSG fans will ah be at the away end. And and i also think, weirdly, this may sound strange, but trust me, this is Anfield. If Liverpool play towards the Kop in the second half...
00:24:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah that's probably game, set, match. So it's all about winning the coin toss as well

Liverpool's Lineup and Internal Dynamics

00:24:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
as the match. ah So Kvichar Kvadaj-Skalia is definitely one to be worried about for Liverpool fans if he can find his feet and also get a goal that won't be disallowed.
00:24:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Usman Dembele as well. It's just whether they can... put up with Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool for Liverpool this is a huge week probably the biggest week of the season and because um they've got the League Cup Arsenal dropped two points against Manchester United mean they've probably got the Premier League now and they've also got a match against the French champions as well but the What amazes me about Liverpool, ah more about Arna Slott, is the fact that Arna Slott is a manager who is doing this in his first season with a European giant, making Liverpool fans fully believe that they can beat anyone on any given day.
00:25:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, they proved that when they dug deep last week. And...
00:25:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I would also like to bring up Kvichu Kovac-Skelia talking about Anfield as well, just before I talk more about Ardislot.
00:25:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:26:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, Kovicic, Kovac, Scalier there. Anyway, back to Arnaz Slott. So that's this is his first knockout tie as Liverpool manager ah in the Champions League and also his first Champions League knockouts match at Anfield.
00:26:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But the way he carries himself in press conferences, it's almost like he's been here before for years with other teams. And that's the sort of impression he gives off. ah This was him talking about ah Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain's performance last week, ah just ahead of this game.
00:27:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
See, I disagree with him there. ah Liverpool, I don't think, played tremendously last week. They were on the back foot the entire game, and they only got two shots away. Only one of them on target, and it's a miracle that that went in.
00:27:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
and The fact that we got that attack in the first place, that was a miracle in itself. ah But Donnarumma getting a hand to Harvey Elliott's shot. Liverpool did not deserve to win that game.
00:28:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Let's just set the record straight. They didn't, and there's no point in pretending... ah Liverpool played well because on the counter-attack ah it was frustrating and it was hopeless we couldn't get out of our own half and in the end it was Darwin Nunez that made the difference coming on ah he was the one that was a catalyst in the attack he was getting in the faces of the ah PSG defenders and he was also getting back to defend in his own box as well and it was him that got the assist for the Harvey Elliott goal and
00:28:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he also got another goal. Well, I say another goal. He also got a goal on the weekend against Southampton. ah So what I'm interested to see from Arnaz Slott and the way Liverpool line up is who plays up front.
00:28:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Will it be Darwin Nunez coming in on good form? ah Obviously, Slotts is quite a stubborn manager. He doesn't like to rotate the team too much. And he also likes to have familiarity. um I'd say Darwin Nunez has played enough ah for it to be familiar.
00:29:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah The other option, obviously, would be Diogo Jota playing up front. He's someone who really struggled against PSG, struggled against Southampton as well, and just hasn't been terrific recently. We know what he's capable of. We know that he can score.
00:29:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah for fun if he wants to if he gets the opportunities he's clinical and he probably has the best shots barring Mo Salah in the entire Liverpool team so maybe it should be him to start he also can be quite competitive he likes to get in defenders faces in his own right he knows all the tricks um just needs to dive a bit less that's the only thing I'd say ah The other option actually would be playing Dominic Soboslai up front and having Curtis Jones playing sort of in between the lines and Soboslai coming out to defend as well when he can.
00:29:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think you need as many players back as you can when it comes to PSG because you need your team to be compact. You need them to be able to defend, ah to be able to struggle and suffer throughout a game um because they will just keep on coming at you.
00:30:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
But moving on to the other players in the Liverpool team. ah This week, Mo Salah went level with Sergio Aguero for the joint fifth most goals in Premier League history with 184. He's also now gone third in the most penalties scored, overtaking Harry Kane's 33 to move up to third with 34.
00:30:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
four Alan Shearer is on 56. He's also missed the most with 11. There you go, Newcastle fans. And Frank Lampard is on 43 as well. He's also now three away from equalising Andy Cole's all-time tally and three away from Andy Cole and Alan Shearer's all-time record for the most direct goal contributions in a Premier League season. Salah has 44, they have 47.
00:31:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's also now three assists away from the most assists in a Premier League season, held by Thierry Henry and KDB, Kevin De Bruyne. Salah has 17. They have 20.
00:31:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, Salah struggled against PSG last week, completely ah shut down for the entire match. He was ganged up on by PSG defenders and he just couldn't get any momentum going. ah PSG were compact. They knew exactly how to deal with him, but they were just constantly in Liverpool's side.
00:31:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And in the rare occasions where Liverpool did get forward, Salah would often find himself struggling against Nuno Mendes. um So he needs a performance. His two goals on the weekend both came from penalties.
00:31:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think for the rest of the match, he was kept relatively quiet. um And also, ah in the build-up to this match, he got into a bit of an altercation with Trent Alexander-Arnold in training. Now, what you could say, ah for me bringing this up, is is it immature just to bring up ah things in training that have probably been resolved?
00:32:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But also, on the flip side, is it mature to be getting into... ah scraps with your own teammates and training. I understand competitiveness, but Slott has made it very clear that he doesn't want any emotions taking over um when it matters most. He made a huge deal of it with Darwin Nunez when he went off ah the pitch with his shirt in his mouth against Aston Villa and was sulking in the changing room after the game.
00:32:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So he's obviously someone that will be coming down on these players quite harshly um and not standing for any of this. But, you know, for two players who are held in such high regard in the dressing room, one of them being your vice captain, the other one being a star scorer,
00:32:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not a good look. And, you know, they work together so much.

Anticipation for Liverpool vs PSG Match

00:33:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
How many times have we seen Trent Alexander-Arnold play a ball forward to Salah and then that starts an attack or even assists Salah? It's just been an unbelievable amount of times.
00:33:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah It's not a good look. And, well, the less said about it, the better now, for as far as I'm ah concerned. ah The real question is, can Liverpool hold onto their lead? 1-0 against one of the biggest sides in Europe.
00:33:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so as I mentioned before, I think Anfield will have a huge amount to deal with do with it um because... it when When Liverpool attack the Kop, it's almost like the ball gets sucked into the Kop goal.
00:33:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah On counterattacks, tactics just go out of the window. Liverpool start pouring players forward. We saw it several times against Bayer Leverkusen earlier in the season. Bearing in mind, Bayer Leverkusen undefeated for all of last season up until the Europa League final.
00:34:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Bundesliga winners and also Xavi Alonso, the first manager that Liverpool went after ah for replacing Klopp, just had his team torn apart.
00:34:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
maybe Maybe Liverpool can get that against PSG. That would definitely do a lot of favours, especially if it is in the second half. um That second half is going to be absolutely huge, isn't it?
00:34:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Another boost Liverpool have been handed ah is Cody Gakpo will be in the squad for this game. um Back in training, full. ah full Back in full training. And...
00:34:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
He has probably been the best left winger in the Premier League this season. I don't think he should start if he is fit enough just because it is such an awful game to be thrown into.
00:34:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
And also if we're losing, I wouldn't just throw him on. ah He hasn't played in a decent amount of time now. ah But definitely, if we are winning towards the end, throw him on, get him back into competitive football ahead of the Sunday match against Newcastle. That would be good.
00:35:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
When it comes down to who will win, it's one that you really can't predict. Because PSG are just so good. And you look at their team, so many great players.
00:35:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
You could say the same about Liverpool. And they have the lead going in so going into a match at Anfield. So in that respect, Liverpool are probably favourites.
00:35:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's the Champions League. And for PSG, it may feel like all or nothing in this game. They have nothing to lose. They're well ahead in the league and they'll be well

Conclusion and Upcoming Fixtures

00:35:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
up for it. And it will be a terrific match. ah So that's all from me in today's podcast.
00:35:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
um We'll be doing a review ah both on the Liverpool podcast and the daily English Premier League podcast. ah Hopefully Marcus Ramseholt will be on for that one.
00:35:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
But ah enjoy the match. And from Daily English's perspective, you can join us tomorrow as we also unpack all of the fixtures for Arsenal and Aston Villa in the Champions League.
00:36:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Two good games for that one to advance into the round of 16. But take care and enjoy the football.
