Hello and welcome to the Daily Premier League in English and Daily Liverpool podcasts brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network.
00:00:52
Speaker
My name is Louis Easton and joining me today from Daily Liverpool is Mr. Conor Norcott.

Will Trent Alexander-Arnold Move to Real Madrid?

00:00:58
Speaker
ah Got a very different episode for you today, however, because um we've been used to so much success as Liverpool fans throughout this season until recently and you know These last two weeks have felt like hell for us, but it's just gotten even worse today ah because it seems that Trent Alexander-Arnold is going to Real Madrid. and
00:01:23
Speaker
Conor, is this something you expected? This has obviously been in the works for Real Madrid for a long time. Yeah, I feel like it's one of those where... I mean, kind of like the Kylian Mbappe thing, it's been the worst kept secret in football, you know?
00:01:40
Speaker
When he was about to join Real Madrid, everyone thought, oh, well, it's not really been confirmed yet, but we all kind of knew where he was going. yeah It kind of feels like the Trent thing was just another... it was just season two of that.
00:01:52
Speaker
Maybe season three, if you want to throw Bellingham in there. Real Madrid always... They always get their man. And it just really sucks that he was ours first, you know? ah He is like...
00:02:04
Speaker
I mean, we've been blessed recently to have some incredible footballers at Liverpool, but he was one of the ones that I maybe would have said, you know, probably my top top three favourite players at the club currently. I just think the way he plays the game is so good.
00:02:21
Speaker
He is kind of one of one. There's nobody like Trent. And I think that's where it's going to be really interesting for Liverpool. We can probably talk about that a bit later. yeah What do they do now? you know it's it's It's going to be crazy. And the worst part is there's still two contracts we don't really know about yet. you know Yeah, exactly. it's I feel like this one, though, felt pretty nailed on compared to the other two.
00:02:45
Speaker
um In my opinion, anyway, because of the fact that... It's been in the works for so long. And he's the only one out of the three that has been heavily linked with a move elsewhere.
00:02:56
Speaker
And also he hasn't really been denying any of the rumors. And, you know, he hasn't been going out on a limb to say, i love Liverpool. This is my club. I want to stay here forever. um i still remember he did that Sky Sports interview recently where he was asked if um he would rather, think it was win the Premier League with Liverpool again.
00:03:17
Speaker
something like that, win the Champions League with Liverpool again, win the Ballon d'Or was one of them, ah or win the World Cup with England. And he said he'd rather win the Ballon d'Or out of all of those four.
00:03:29
Speaker
He says he wants to create his own legacy. And he was asked, what about captaining Liverpool? He said, well, I've already done that. So it was at that moment where I thought, yeah, do you know what? it's that That's it. that it's it's It's all sort of made sense now. um Here's a little bit history on Trent.

Trent's Journey with Liverpool

00:03:49
Speaker
Obviously, us Liverpool fans we have followed his journey.
00:03:53
Speaker
ah But his journey started back when he was signed by Liverpool in 2004 at the age of six. He earned high praise in Steven Gerrard's autobiography while he was being coached by him.
00:04:04
Speaker
In the academy, he made his debut against Spurs in the League Cup in October 2016. After an impressive pre-season and with Nathaniel Klein injured, Alexander-Arnold started the two thousand and seventeen eighteen season as the team's right-back and scored his first goal against Hoffenheim in a Champions League qualifier on the 15th of August, that free kick that curled in.
00:04:25
Speaker
ah With us, he's made memoral perform memorable performances with the corner taken quickly and that performance against Leicester City. He's won a Champions League. ah He's on the verge of winning his second Premier League. He's won an FA Cup, two League Cups, a Super Cup, a Club World Cup and a Community Shield.
00:04:43
Speaker
He holds the record for the most assists from a Premier League defender in history with 64. And today he's 26 years old. He looks set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer in July.
00:04:55
Speaker
The reported figure is 220,000 a week. He's currently on 180,000 a week at Liverpool.

Who is Responsible for Trent's Exit?

00:05:02
Speaker
According to TalkSport, a contract has already been agreed.
00:05:06
Speaker
Now, Conor, Who's more to blame for this? Is it Trent or is it FSG? um Oh, that's a good question. That's a good question.
00:05:16
Speaker
I think the the real negative part of me wants to say FSG because there is no way that we'd be here in the first place had the contract situation been sorted out.
00:05:30
Speaker
a year or two ago you know you can look at at the most salon Virgil van Dijk contracts even Ibu Canate is out of contract next year it doesn't look too good from an optics point of view but ultimately I think you can't I feel really torn about this because I want to blame Trent but also can you really and know he's a boyhood Liverpool fan I get it. I mean, I have grown up sporting Liverpool all my life. I'm not from here.
00:05:58
Speaker
I've lived in this city for nearly 10 years now. I wouldn't go, but that's me. You know, he's his own man. He can make his own decision. And I think as soon as Real Madrid get that, their hooks in, you know, people don't turn them down unless you're Steven Gerrard, you know?
00:06:14
Speaker
So that we'll see. that We idolize Gerrard and he idolizes Gerrard. And he's from the city, so he knows the culture of the club. And that's, if you are to leave Liverpool when you don't really need to, that's very impactful because the city is so tightly knitted together. And, you know, it's just a different culture in Liverpool. um If you become a club legend, you're revered in ah the city forever. You know, they'll make it. He's already got a mural of himself just around the corner from Anfield.
00:06:51
Speaker
um and And, you know, I just, I don't think money comes into it. I know he's a bit materialistic, Trent. We all know that he, you know, he's shooting for LV and Paris and that sort of stuff. But I don't think he, I don't think that small wage increase, well, a massive wage increase for the normal person. But from a footballer's perspective, that wage increase I don't think is the

Is Trent a Liverpool Legend Despite Leaving?

00:07:18
Speaker
reason he's leaving. I just think he wants to create his own legacy. I think he cares more about his legacy in football than his legacy with Liverpool.
00:07:26
Speaker
And, you know, when you idolise Gerrard, you sort of get a bit annoyed with him as Liverpool fans because it was Gerrard who really was having a much worse time with Liverpool ah in those sort of mid-2000s. The club was on the verge of going into debt. It did end up going into debt with Hicks and Gillette.
00:07:45
Speaker
ah We lost Xavi Alonso. um We lost Mascherano. And it was just seemed like the club was falling apart. We weren't really challenging ah for the league until like 2009.
00:07:58
Speaker
And he had very good offers. It was Jose Mourinho who was continuously trying to sign him for other teams. And they were very tempting offers because Gerrard was holding the club together for...
00:08:14
Speaker
years And that's why he is very, very near to if not the greatest Liverpool player of all time. And when you have that person there that you've idolised, you've tried to play like it was Trent who in the academy was central midfielder.
00:08:31
Speaker
um It just feels a bit strange. It just doesn't feel like this is the sort of thing that he should should be doing if he wants to be this club legend. i mean we've We've all seen the hate that Owen got when he left. um And he wanted to come back to Liverpool, ended up not happening. And then, well, he went to Man United and we all know what happened there. But do you think Trent will go down as a legend in Liverpool now?
00:09:01
Speaker
Oh, that's another good. I don't know, man. I don't know. I think it's it's too early to tell because it's it's still afresh. You know, it's still breaking news as we're recording, I suppose. And also, it's technically not being officially confirmed.
00:09:16
Speaker
ah Although, you know, a betting man would probably say it's it's done. um i think of I think, yeah, he will. Of course he will. I mean, local lad comes up through the ranks, plays for Liverpool for 20 years, wins a lot, vice-captains the team.
00:09:33
Speaker
You know, as things stand, is the highest assistant defender in Premier League history, revolutionized the right-back role. yeah like Like we said, he's a generational footballer. Especially in that position, I'll say he is.
00:09:47
Speaker
Whether he's a legend in Liverpool or not, it's kind of up for debate. But I think in terms of the game, he will be. But it does there's something about it that even if I if i was at Anfield in the last game and he was there and we were clapping him off, I'd feel bitter about it.
00:10:02
Speaker
I really would. I think I will, you know. 100%. 100%. It feels like the McManaman situation. I know I wasn't around during that time, but I think that's the closest comparison to it because McManaman... Well, I suppose McManaman didn't win the Champions League And i

Impact of Trent's Departure on Liverpool

00:10:18
Speaker
I don't think he won the Premier League either. I think that was slightly... No, because we didn't win the Premier League, but I'm talking about just the top division of English football. I don't think he was there for 1990. No, he wasn't.
00:10:28
Speaker
So it I suppose that's the closest comparison to it. And... and I suppose Trent might feel a little bit annoyed if he's not revered as a Liverpool legend because he's won all of this stuff Liverpool.
00:10:43
Speaker
On the verge of his second Premier League title, won the Champions League, that and he's probably our greatest right-back since, I don't know, Phil Neal?
00:10:54
Speaker
Maybe even overtaken him now, but... it he he He is a legend in terms of his status at Liverpool. It's just the fact that he's won all of this and Liverpool are at their best point in 30, 35 years.
00:11:12
Speaker
So why would you want to leave that all behind? That's how I feel about it. So that's why that that's the perspective I'm seeing. I think as well, Liverpool are at their best, like you've just mentioned, but also I think why this feels so bitter is that this is also such a pivotal moment and it's going to be a massive summer anyway.
00:11:30
Speaker
But now that the first kind of dominoes fallen, if you will, allegedly again, allegedly Trent's going, um, the vibes for want of a better word are a little bit weird now you know like like you mentioned that we're were potentially nailed on for a title win this year i uh i was having this conversation with some mates earlier over lunch about the trent thing and about you know Are Liverpool fans allowed to be annoyed?
00:11:58
Speaker
We're about to win the league. Are we allowed? Of course we are. ah yeah a generational player at the club who has grown up, boyhood Liverpool fan, done it all, won it all, you know kind of the face of the club for years to come, hopefully, has decided not to renew, to go to Real Madrid to hire with his little best mate.
00:12:15
Speaker
And all of this is in the wake of our League Cup final loss, ah match that he missed as well, by the way, yeah through injury. So now he's missed a he's missed a pivotal match and he's off talking to Real Madrid representatives.
00:12:27
Speaker
That is a bit annoying. And also, what does this mean for Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk? Because they'll be looking at this and saying, hey, so you have got 180 grand a week next season.
00:12:39
Speaker
That is now being unused. Maybe they would want a bit of that. Uh, because I mean, if you're Mo Salah, you can demand any wages you want because he's been probably the, this has been his best season at the club and it's down to him basically that we're on the verge of winning a premier league title.
00:12:57
Speaker
Virgil van Dijk, I don't think will be that sort of person because he's already the club captain and he just doesn't seem like he cares too much about the money. He's already earning ah decent amount. um But do you think this is more ground for Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk to make their own personal demands?
00:13:16
Speaker
Or do you think this is a step closer to them being out of the door, seeing the vice captain ah leaving and potentially seeing a huge reform in our club over the summer?

Liverpool's Uncertain Future

00:13:27
Speaker
This kind of comes back to, you said, it you know, we're at our best in the last 35 years, but also it's such a pivotal summer and it feels so precarious because it can go either way, right?
00:13:40
Speaker
Let's say they both renew, fantastic. And then we have these grinds to replace some players, freshen up the forward line, you know, let's say they both go. Does it suddenly start looking good?
00:13:51
Speaker
I think you could argue that the wage is freeing up. I understand that looks a bit more, you know, it looks like you could just go, here's 90 grand for you, Salah. Here's 90 grand for you, Van Dyke. But what I do think is kind of interesting is,
00:14:05
Speaker
you know, maybe this is the the film shouldn't, former film shouldn't have met in me coming out and analyzing it a bit too much. Right. But you could argue that is there a room for you to get the bad news first and the good news comes afterwards?
00:14:19
Speaker
You know, is it like, okay, we're going to tell you, well, we're not going to tell you, we're going to leak it that Trent's going, The fume's going to kick off. We're going to announce it. The fume's going to keep going. Here comes the end of the season. We're 12 points clear.
00:14:32
Speaker
Here's your Van Dijk extension. Here's your Mo Salah extension. Because yeah the thing is, like a massive company like Liverpool and that dominates headlines so often, the media attention is so massive.
00:14:47
Speaker
So you kind of have to, from their point of view, you'd hope they would skew a certain way, you know, and hopefully it would bring the positivity back. but that's whether or not they do. I mean, I've always been quite pessimistic about FSG and about Liverpool. And I'm not one of those FSG out people, although I've definitely been close to my time because I think the good steart yeah i think they're good stewards of the club, but obviously you're a Liverpool fan, Louie. You get it. you want we We want more transfers. oh Everyone does, right?
00:15:16
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. And the way Liverpool are structured is, unfortunately, we're a sell-to-buy club, really. That's kind of how we work. And I think another reason why this feels so bitter again is that we're not getting any money for him.
00:15:31
Speaker
And he's the one that, you know, that, That is annoying. But I suppose the argument could be that we didn't pay anything for him in the first place because he's been at the club since he was six years old. It's different if it's Salah and Van Dijk because we paid a decent amount of money, especially for Van Dijk.
00:15:48
Speaker
And I just think as well, you know, the talks of Diaz and Nunez leaving as well. it's that that Therefore, we need reinforcement in the front this summer because, you know, Jota could be on his way out.
00:16:02
Speaker
Chiesa, there's been talk of him leaving. Harvey Elliott, there's been talk of him leaving. And I just think, come on, but we can't lose our vice captain, our captain, our star forward, our backup for our star forward. hit his backup for his right winger, our striker, our backup striker, and our left winger.
00:16:26
Speaker
We've only got Gakpo left in the front. So I just think, come on. This does feel like... The last two years have felt like a bit of a transition anyway. you know Since we lost Firmino, Mane and co, um we haven't really replaced Sadio Mane and Firmino, really.
00:16:46
Speaker
I mean, we've been close with Diaz a couple of times, but he just hasn't been putting up the numbers. um And, you know, it it feels weird that we're doing all of this after winning the Premier League, assuming that happens. so um So the question, I suppose, is what reinforcement do we need? And will Connor Bradley be Trent's personal replacement, the permanent replacement, rather, especially with Calvin Ramsey still out on loan as well? He could come back and be his right back, back up Gomez and Quants. Well, Quants doesn't really work, as we've seen, but...
00:17:19
Speaker
I think he does for that yeah this is the big another big question. There's so many question marks over so many positions, I think, at Liverpool. um Famously, we've disagreed about left-backs before. And you know what? I'm happy to park it because Trent Goen...
00:17:34
Speaker
Andy Robertson's your vice captain, surely, right? Surely. It makes the most sense. It makes the most sense. And I personally love Robertson, as I mentioned before in the group chat. I still don't think Timicas is first team quality. I think we have to to that. And there's another position you have to strengthen or replace, right? Because it looks like one of them is going to go. And the talk is Milos Kerkhez as well coming in, and he's got that...
00:17:58
Speaker
link with Sobos Lai in the national team, great friends off the pitch, it would make sense. but It would. I think in terms of replacements and sign-ins, it feels like the biggest summer you know, we've set to have as as Liverpool fans and as a club in so long.

Plans for Next Season

00:18:14
Speaker
And the thing is, it's kind of the summer that we're really going to find out what FSG are like, like what, how they see Liverpool going forward. Because if you think about it, I think um before the, before the first, you know, game kicked off, I was very much in the camp that Liverpool are a top four team. We're a Champions League team. yeah And any trophies that we pick up along the way, thumbs up.
00:18:37
Speaker
I'm all here for that. Yeah. Yeah. Thankfully, look at it looking like it. We're going to win the the Premier League this year, um but we're still in transition, like you mentioned. So I think the key thing for me, those two contract extensions, Salah, Van Dijk are so important.
00:18:53
Speaker
I think there's probably, they probably knew the Trent thing was coming, right? Probably. So you'd like to think there's been some talk about what's the right back situation. Is Connor Bradley a good enough option?
00:19:05
Speaker
I think he's too injury prone and I love him, but he picks up muscle injuries and and and I think Joe Gomez is friends probably going to move on. on yeah I don't know. It would be stupid if we got rid of Gomez because he can play in so many positions and he always does a very good job.
00:19:23
Speaker
um He's had his calamities in the past, but... You know, so has Alisson and yeah he's been probably the best goalkeeper in the world for the last five years.
00:19:35
Speaker
um and it just It's just there's too much uncertainty around the club and we can't afford to have any more injury prone players. We saw our midfield around our best years when we were constantly seeing Naby Keita, Thiago, Oxlade, Chamberlain, all sidelined for too much, too much time.
00:19:57
Speaker
And I just don't want to go back to that. And, you know, winning the Premier League, guaranteed Champions League football next season, definitely, that's 100%. It just feels like we should have all the cards.
00:20:11
Speaker
But when we've got this much uncertainty and this much tension around the club... it it it it causes questions of the fans and i don't think that's unreasonable. I know with FSG things often work out.
00:20:24
Speaker
I mean, who would have thought that we'd win the Premier League this season, assuming that happens, but... ah i I don't know what I want anymore for a Liverpool. yeah i say I don't know where we'll be next season.
00:20:38
Speaker
i have I don't know. um but and I can't just concentrate on the rest of this season because, I mean, firstly, it's an international break and all these stories are flying around.
00:20:48
Speaker
And secondly... well We win the Premier League. As fans, we have the mentality. Great. What's next? what's what's What's for next summer? There's no international football ah over the summer.
00:21:01
Speaker
what's What's next for August when we go back? Will Salah be there? Will Van Dijk be there? It's just a sad, scary time again ah for Liverpool fans.

Critical Summer for Liverpool's Strategy

00:21:12
Speaker
It feels... um like Like we keep saying, it feels it feels perilous. It feels like this is the this is the summer where we find out what what the owners are made of, um what Arnest Lott is looking for in a number nine, probably. We find out how much Salah, Van Dijk want to stay and how much FSG value them. We know that the manager fancies them.
00:21:36
Speaker
It's just one of those where a lot of question marks over a lot of players, a lot of positions, And I think we need answers. And it's ah it's almost like it's almost like you expect the fall off post-Club, right?
00:21:50
Speaker
And thankfully that didn't happen because of how Liverpool have played this year. um And I think that's part of that is also, this is a little bit tangential, but part of that is also down to the fact that there wasn't that much ah change in terms of, of course, there was a new background staff came in there was technical staff came in but on the pitch it stayed the same.
00:22:11
Speaker
we've kind of seen that the behind the scenes staff change now. We've seen how that works, but now it's another, it's another transition. It's another game of questions because there's going to be lots of on field changes this year. And I think, you know,
00:22:25
Speaker
ah some of the names were being linked at right back as well. I don't really see how it makes sense. I love the idea of Jeremy Frimpong. I'm sure you've seen that, but like, yeah, he's a, he's a right wing back, almost a right midfielder.
00:22:37
Speaker
Does it make sense? I'm not too sure. Like, yeah, he plays, he plays at a system, uh, with Leverkusen where they play with three center backs and, ah yeah and two fullbacks who just bomb up the wings. So that's Jeremy Frimpong on the right, Alejandro Grimaldo on the left. I've seen him play in other positions as well, but,
00:22:55
Speaker
and We can't have... we We need someone with legs, and I understand that, but we need someone who can play in a back four as well. And Frimpong, if you saw for the Netherlands, against Spain, he played on the right wing.
00:23:10
Speaker
its ah say it it would not make sense. I've seen the name Alexander Isak thrown around. That's not going to happen. If you're a fan of Liverpool Football Club, you will know that that is not a Liverpool signing.
00:23:23
Speaker
When have we ever gone for a striker, a proven striker in the Premier League? Last one, I think, is Christian Benteke. I was about to say. so I was about to say. I don't want talk about that one. Never again.
00:23:36
Speaker
yeah Or Ricky Lambert, if you will. He was kind of proven, but that but again, don't want to talk about that either. wouldn't. He's not on the same level as Isak. I don't think that's any disrespect to Ricky Nam. but I think, or Ben Teke, really, but we can move we can move on. yeah Yeah, no, definitely not. so ah and i I suppose the closing question is, um do you see Liverpool in the same position next season as you see them in this season?

FSG's Management and Fan Confidence

00:24:05
Speaker
Is that position first? um Because if so... Or at least challenging for the Premier League title. yeah Yeah, I think it hinges massively on Van Dijk and Salah.
00:24:16
Speaker
um yeah And if they both if they both stay, then yeah. Because i think the average of FSG slash whatever sporting director you want, um you know, signing players that turn out to be to fit in and turn out to it turns out to be a success at Liverpool is pretty high, you know.
00:24:35
Speaker
yeah but You can name a few players that might not have worked on it. Yeah, often with our signings, they always seem to slot in perfectly as well. yeah Yeah, and I think that goes to show the kind of level of detail that is constantly being taken in and and looked looked into when you're scouting these players.
00:24:53
Speaker
But it is so it's such a big, big, big summer that i i'm I'm quietly confident, but only if those two stay. i don't know, how do you feel? You're the same? i'm I'm only confident because it's FSG. I know there are so many Liverpool fans that would completely disagree with me, but how often have we always slated FSG for not getting contracts done or signings done, and then it just works out? um Because remember how much hatred they were getting when we didn't sign Bellingham.
00:25:20
Speaker
Then we pulled Soboslai and McAllister and Gravenberg out of the hat, and suddenly we've won the league, it seems like. Yeah. um that's that's why and I just think that Richard Hughes um Michael Edwards are just absolute geniuses um and that's why I just feel somewhat confident with ah whatever happens this summer will be um in our hands and
00:25:48
Speaker
ah Hopefully we'll be back challenging for all the big ones next season. We'll end the podcast there on a somewhat high note, but um obviously devastating to lose Trent Alexander-Arnold, it seems like.
