Introduction to the Podcast

00:00:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Daily English Premier League Podcast brought to you by Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Michal Czarniecki coming to you pre-recorded from California and joining me, the Hawaii guy, Nathan. Thank you so much for appearing in in our podcast. Long time no see, man.
00:01:04
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, it's good to be back. i'm Good to get the Premier League back.
00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Absolutely.
00:01:08
Nathan AVFC
But um yeah, lots and lots of them good topics to speak about there.
00:01:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. Absolutely.

Manchester Derby Analysis

00:01:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And what a match week it was and what the weekend it was. And to be honest, it came to a point that when we were discussing the games that we actually want to cover in detail in today's episode, we had a problem because normally you would, of course, devolve the entire episode for Manchester Derby.
00:01:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
But then once you figure out, once you actually saw the game and once you realize that it finished goalless, you kind of try to somehow re-establish your priorities because, you know, Manchester Derby, of course, it's important, but with goal-less Derby, it sounds bad.
00:01:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
But anyway, let's just, let's let's go through it because um there are there are still some interesting things to talk about from a Manchester Derby perspective. And the most interesting giveaway, and at least according to me, from that Manchester Derby game is that,
00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
If there is some progress

Man United's Tactics and Player Performances

00:02:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
by Ruben Omorim's side, it is somewhat visible. I say somewhat because they still, they were missing chances. for But what I really liked about Man United in the game was that Patrick Dogu finally started playing in his level.
00:02:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah i'm Every single time I see Bruno Fernandes, I just you know bow down to him because this is our God. So ah he had a great game. Diogo Dalo, the guy who I've been on the record really hating, he actually put up a good show.
00:02:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, you know, ah what what are your thoughts about this?
00:02:46
Nathan AVFC
ah Yeah, from what I saw, I thought it was pretty even game. um Yeah, I thought they're still growing into this 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 system, the Man United.
00:02:59
Nathan AVFC
Dalo and Dorgou did actually do pretty well defensively. Offensively, there's... They've still got a long way to go in terms of utilising their wing-backs and getting them into the attacking positions they want.
00:03:15
Nathan AVFC
um But it wasn't great, but it wasn't bad.
00:03:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:03:19
Nathan AVFC
It was just okay. um But I think I said to you beforehand, Man United seem a lot better off the ball because that was always their problem with players tracking back, a players working hard enough.
00:03:32
Nathan AVFC
But they're definitely a lot stronger at that now. It's just... finishing those chances for them

Rasmus Hoyland's Adaptation Challenges

00:03:39
Nathan AVFC
now. They're just really struggling to put the ball in the back of the net.
00:03:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
True, true. And i absolutely agree. And I mean, just just looking at the statistics of Rasmus Hoyland, right? The guy who we are really who somebody really expects to contribute to the team and to contribute to chances and contribute to capitalizing on them.
00:03:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Well, there was nothing for Hoyland to capitalize on because he had no attempts. zero on target, zero off target, zero blocked, nothing. It's as if he wasn't even there.
00:04:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
That is a very big problem for Hoyland because she I think he he cannot really adapt to that system that Ruben Amorimis is offering. ah So I really think that as a Man United fan, I really think that Hoyland, like,
00:04:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
he's going to be fighting for his survival for those last games of the season because if he does not produce something, if he doesn't adapt to Ruben Amorim, then ah that coach will have no problem cutting him off, just cutting him out from the team and just telling him to go find a different club.
00:04:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Would that be a right assessment or do you think I'm being too harsh for Hoyland?
00:04:39
Nathan AVFC
yeah
00:04:43
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, I think you make a really good point because it really, for me, feels like it's the system that he's struggling to adapt to. um If you've seen him play for the Danish national team, even before he went to Man United and Atalanta, he's a very instinctive striker.
00:04:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:04:59
Nathan AVFC
He just needs service, needs crosses in the box, got a good finish when he's on the end of things. But he just... It feels like he's trying to play the ah physical battle in the Premier League and he and it's very difficult.
00:05:11
Nathan AVFC
ah He's ah usually going to be up against two centre-backs with his back-to-goal. um You want to see him making runs into the box, timing of his runs. It just feels like he needs kind of the old Man United strikers to kind of get a hold of him. like Andy Coles and Ruud van Nistrooyes, he needs that kind of needs that kind of um dynamic again.
00:05:35
Nathan AVFC
Because, yeah, I do rate him, but I think you're right. I think if it continues, he's probably going to be a lone player or a bench player because you'd probably think they're going to sign a striker or two in the summer.
00:05:48
Nathan AVFC
But system-wise, I think he's struggling. um Yeah, ah ah for me, I just don't think he gets the service.
00:05:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:05:58
Nathan AVFC
Yeah. but
00:05:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
He doesn't get the service. Mm-hmm.
00:06:01
Nathan AVFC
When Garnaccio usually cuts in, he's kind of cutting into that mid mid-space where he usually probably wants a player on the outside. But then you argue that do the wing-backs do enough to get balls into the box?
00:06:15
Nathan AVFC
Those kind of questions. But he's got to be there, right? He's got to be in the right position. Usually he isn't. So that's on him.
00:06:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and that that's all that you can actually say.
00:06:27
Nathan AVFC
Well, I did see...
00:06:30
Nathan AVFC
I did see Xerxes had a chance when he came on where there was a cross into the box and he kind of flicked it. ah The keeper had to make a good save. um But then I've heard murmurs that Xerxes doesn't think he's a number nine or he's not a number 10.
00:06:46
Nathan AVFC
He doesn't really know what he is.
00:06:50
Nathan AVFC
I don't know. I don't know what to say.
00:06:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow. No, but to be honest, what you just said there but the first but perfectly encapsulates the main United States of State of Affairs, really. Because those players, they for the last three, four months, or even five months, they've been trying to
00:07:00
Nathan AVFC
Yeah. Yeah.
00:07:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
to to somehow find their identity in that system. And some did well, some that some did super well, and some of them did subpar.
00:07:16
Nathan AVFC
yeah
00:07:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were really up to scratch there. ah But just to move on from Man United a little bit, because of course ah that is the team which is closest to my heart and to your heart of of many fans out there.

Manchester City's Performance Concerns

00:07:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's just give a little bit of time airtime to a Man City here and how the lack of Erling Haaland cost them greatly.
00:07:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or maybe it wasn't just Erling Haaland. Maybe it was the fact that Kevin De Bruyne also underperformed. Who knows? Maybe his announcement that he's leaving Man City after this season kind of worked as a detrimental ah to his form.
00:07:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
But just speculation.
00:07:50
Nathan AVFC
yeah
00:07:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's just pure speculation. what What is your opinion there?
00:07:53
Nathan AVFC
yeah From what obama I saw from De Bruyne, he yeah had a lot of good passing. um a lot of good some Some moments of... like Obviously, he's got that touch of class and brilliance. When Bernardo Silva is usually in a deeper position, ah don't think that helps the team ah in an attacking sense.
00:08:13
Nathan AVFC
so and Then I didn't see Doku getting past his man. um I didn't really see Marmouche breaking through their three centre-backs today. um But yeah, i think maybe it might have had an effect on De Bruyne, but I still saw moments of class.
00:08:29
Nathan AVFC
But as a collective, I didn't think they did enough in an attacking sense to win the game. Yeah.
00:08:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and and and that's that's so weird to say. i mean, just just just looking at the stats, because of course, like from just a fan's perspective, when you just see the game, you just see Man United pouring with attacks and just failing to capitalize.
00:08:52
Nathan AVFC
Mm-hmm.
00:08:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And as far as Man City went, ah Yeah, they did have some chances. Just, you know, looking at the just statistics of the ah shots, there were, ah well, only nine short shots in total ah comparing to Man United's 13. But they still had some chances. And anna i actually had to make some say's. And of course, he kept a clean sheet. So kudos to him.
00:09:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Looking on the other side of the pitch, Ruben Diaz, Joschko Gwardio, O'Reilly, they have some very good um ratings after this game.
00:09:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
7.4, 7.7, 7.0.
00:09:25
Nathan AVFC
Yeah. Yep.
00:09:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Those are some those are ridddle some really decent rates. And I believe that is because ah they did not allow Bruno Fernandes lot of space. Although sometimes they were failing because Bruno Fernandes still delivered some some great football.
00:09:36
Nathan AVFC
ye
00:09:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But, for example, Diogo Dalot, they did not allow him a lot of space ah to to to to create anything down there. as although Yeah, he he did try, but still, like they they they did some good job.
00:09:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah. so So, I really think that Man City, just did they really if they wanted to, and if they had some more power, they could have really finished that Man United side off. Because, of course, although they were playing better than usual, they still had far better quality football-wise to just...
00:10:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
put at least one past Onana. ah
00:10:14
Nathan AVFC
Yeah.
00:10:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just one more question to you about how how you perceived Pep Guardiola on the sidelines because once I saw his face, basically, like, i've I've just been observing him from the beginning to the end of the game and I just saw how Guardiola was just, I don't know whether that's depression, like, how would you call this?
00:10:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was just so under the weather there.
00:10:36
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, I think the commentator actually um touched upon it. They said he was just getting frustrated throughout when his team don't make pass or when they don't do pattern of play and it just failed he was just constantly like throwing his hands in the air like reacting in a certain way because he's used to winning is but he a perfectionist you know like they they're so they're so used to winning football matches that now that they've taken a drop off especially in these in these last six to nine months it's like hard to comprehend you know but
00:10:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely.
00:11:09
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, I just think they've lost some components of like where they used to be. um Like even Gundogan was playing today and I didn't think he had an effect on the game really at all. not He did okay, but he's not like the Gundogan of three, four years ago.
00:11:28
Nathan AVFC
And then ah do think the uprising of... um name O'Reilly at left back he's been he's brought him into the team as a young player and he's done really well um but i did notice as well that Savino and Grealish were I wouldn't say dropped but they were benched today and that Savino's had a really good upturn of form in this second half of the season so he usually looks like their creative player Jed
00:11:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:11:58
Nathan AVFC
I didn't see, I wasn't very impressed with Doku. Didn't think he beat his man. Didn't think he got any shots away. And Marmoosh just looked very isolated throughout.
00:12:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Although he had the better rating at the end than, if I remember ah correctly, let me just just just look it up very quickly, just so I do not say anything stupid there. So, ah yeah, yeah out st still, um well if I see clearly, Marmo still had a better rating than Phil Foden.
00:12:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Phil Foden was absolutely, like, I didn't even notice him, really.
00:12:30
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, yeah that's ah that's a real kind of astronomical drop-off from Bowdoin, considering last year he was um PFA player of the season, um like voted for by most players and football writers.
00:12:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:12:46
Nathan AVFC
It's really strange to see the drop-off because even for England, he's getting a lot of criticism, but he's just not informed. He just can't find any rhythm, you know? He pops up every now and then with an assist or a goal in the Premier League, but by his standards, it's pretty be low right now.
00:13:06
Nathan AVFC
I think he's just got to get back to basics. you Probably just confidence is gone.
00:13:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's got to get back to basics. And well, we will so we just shall see how this will look because the remaining games for Man City. ah Well, they are still super important. They still want to get to that top four.
00:13:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
and They will play Crystal Palace in the next match week. Then Everton, Aston Villa, Warps, Southampton, Bournemouth and Fulham. it sounds Actually, from just looking at it, it sounds like a ah nice way how to how they could just get their way to the top four. We will mention just you know briefly something about um how the final table of Premier League could shape out.
00:13:52
Nathan AVFC
Thank you.
00:13:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we have to move on because now we just have to hear about our sponsor, which is ah Bionic, the supplements which could turn you into a Greek god. So let's listen to it.
00:14:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're listening to in Daily English Premier League Podcast brought to you by Global Sports Podcast Network. We have just finished discussing the Manchester derby, so we can just move away from that to what somebody could say a far more important issue than just a good old Manchester rivalry, which is a the battle for the very first place and for the championship of England, ladies and

Impact of Liverpool's and Arsenal's Recent Games

00:15:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
gentlemen.
00:15:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
And in that, there have been some developments. um We will just look at those two games of Liverpool and Arsenal as a bundle, like we're just going to bundle it together. ah So Everton, Arsenal at Goodison Park and the penalty, which was a very weak penalty, which could have ever been given.
00:15:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
in football, ah which was then capitalized on by NDI. Everton drew against Arsenal, ah despite pretty good performance from from Arsenal.
00:15:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
But anyway, that was not enough to win against ah Everton there.
00:15:42
Nathan AVFC
Thank you.
00:15:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But this result could still be good for Arsenal as back in and London, Fulham, they won against Liverpool, three goals to two, even though Liverpool took an early lead by McAllister in minute it all just collapsed as Liverpool actually lost two goals in the very like actually three goals in very quick succession Sassanon 23rd minute I will be 32nd Muniz 37th 32nd and 37th wow I mean if you just just if you didn't even see the highlights and you just look at the column of goals scored by Fulham you just have to see my word what has happened with Liverpool defense there
00:16:27
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, for me, I just think they they were caught cold a couple times. um Iwobi's kind of, I think he's had a ah good season. He's contributed a lot of goals in this system and and he definitely caused them an issue.
00:16:46
Nathan AVFC
um i know a big factor is Robertson's being You can tell it's kind of performances are dropping over this last year or two compared to where he was where he was under Jurgen Klopp.
00:16:59
Nathan AVFC
And then you combine that with Curtis Jones filling it right back and they really exploited that left side of Liverpool today. And um yeah, just think you've got the Muniz goal where Van Dijk was trying to claim foul was just great strength.
00:17:22
Nathan AVFC
Like, you can't be complaining to the referee. I mean, if that if that was um ruled out, then we may as well rule out half the Premier League for contact.
00:17:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. Yeah.
00:17:32
Nathan AVFC
But, yeah, that was that was a great goal. And then, um yeah, think the one Jones, it deflected off of him. And then Sessegnon, he's hit it into the net. And that, that very avoidable goals, um considering they were, McAllister hit an absolute rocket from 20, 25 yards.
00:17:50
Nathan AVFC
twenty twenty five yards
00:17:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:17:52
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, i think Fulham have always threatened. the and I know that we did a podcast before about when Fulham beat Newcastle at St. James' Park, and they've always been capable of doing this to teams.
00:18:03
Nathan AVFC
I know they drew to Arsenal at Craven Cottage earlier in the season. like ah they They've got some threats in it attack, and um with Robinson at fullback as well.
00:18:14
Nathan AVFC
it' there's There's just a lot of good pedigree in their team. I thought Sander Berger had a really good game as well in the centre midfield.
00:18:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah. So that is that could be really perceived as a major upset, to say the least. And, you know, I'm kind of i'm i'm kind of conflicted now because Louis, a long-time Liverpool ah fan who is also a podcaster here at the English Premier League and also at Daily Liverpool, I would love to just to hear his reaction as to like how right after i was claiming and everybody around him
00:18:49
Nathan AVFC
Yeah.
00:18:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
claimed that Liverpool, they have the title in the pocket. ah It's already done and dusted. And right after this prediction, right after our statements, Liverpool started dropping points in Premier League.
00:19:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I do not i do not think I would love to hear the Louis' wrath on me for jinxing his title. But then again, ah ah you know, it could be kind of a little bit guilty pleasure, you know, just just listening as a Man United fan to Liverpool fan, just just crying and complaining.
00:19:21
Nathan AVFC
You usually say that teams drop off from the top four race or they don't want it when they when they drop points or who wants to grab the place, you know but it's now actually happening with the title.
00:19:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But...
00:19:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
right That's interesting.
00:19:35
Nathan AVFC
was Whenever Liverpool of dropped points, Arsenal have gone along and dropped points as well. I'm pretty sure they said earlier in the season when Liverpool dropped points to Fulham in the reverse fixture, Arsenal played Everton.
00:19:50
Nathan AVFC
um I think it was the Emirates and they drew nil nil So they dropped points in the same reverse fixtures at the same point earlier in the season, ah which is which is crazy. But but from um I was meant to mention as well that I thought that Liverpool just...
00:20:10
Nathan AVFC
They really were off it in the first half, like especially Sabaslai, players like that, and Jones. There was a lot of misplaced passes, and it was very out of character, like them in possession, how poor they were.
00:20:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah. yeah
00:20:22
Nathan AVFC
But yeah, I think it was just an off first half, and it cost them, because they were 1-0 up, and then they were 3-1 down in the first half.
00:20:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
na
00:20:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, there was no way how to get back from that, really.
00:20:33
Nathan AVFC
Yeah.
00:20:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
So but thanks to that. and okay like based on what you just said there about how in the reverse fixture that was pretty much and the same, um like almost the same story when Liverpool dropped points.
00:20:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But like that the difference here is that it was a 2-2 draw, to draw on on December 14th, if I see it correctly.
00:20:48
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, it was a draw, yeah. Yeah.
00:20:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
But anyway, that ah means that Arsenal's job might be slightly easier, although still, like just beating this 11 point difference with, I think, seven games left to play, that might be almost impossible.
00:20:56
Nathan AVFC
Yeah.
00:21:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But let's just focus slightly on the Arsenal game, because here I mentioned already about this penalty, which was given to Everton, which was one of the weakest penalties I've ever seen

Controversial Penalty Decision for Everton vs Arsenal

00:21:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
in my entire life. I mean, what was your assessment there?
00:21:24
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, i mean the way Lewis Schedy plays is, for his age, he's got a very good physical um frame. And he just kind of, you can tell he's one of the players who uses his body really well.
00:21:39
Nathan AVFC
And he's he's just tried to get his body in between It's Harrison.
00:21:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:21:44
Nathan AVFC
um And then, i mean, he's just kind of, they've come together and he's just kind of fell. But even Harrison, after he's fell, has just got straight back up without any without any kind of um asking of the referee. Like, is it a foul? Is it a penalty? Nobody put their arm up.
00:22:04
Nathan AVFC
So to just see the referee blow his whistle and just give it like that was just kind of strange. It seemed very soft. ah I did think the referee in the game was wasn't on top of certain things. I know it might seem really small, but when... Because the way Arsenal play, Raya likes to distribute as soon as he catches it.
00:22:25
Nathan AVFC
And they were purposely like getting in front of the goalkeeper.
00:22:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:22:28
Nathan AVFC
And I think it was two or three times went he tried to distribute with his feet. And they've just blocked it. And the referee on, think, one or two occasions wasn't even looking at the goalkeeper. He just let it go.
00:22:40
Nathan AVFC
So I was like, it was pretty pretty poor officiating at certain moments. But if it if it was my if it was Villa, if it was my team, I'd be fuming with that decision.
00:22:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I don't blame you.
00:22:51
Nathan AVFC
Yeah. Yeah.
00:22:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't blame you. I would be fuming too because for me was so weak because Louis Skelly, he just, said I think you could absolutely correctly, he just ah blocked the access to the ball from the from um from the forward.
00:23:04
Nathan AVFC
yeah
00:23:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was absolutely legal.
00:23:06
Nathan AVFC
yeah
00:23:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
And in every other single league in the world, that would just be... ah like The referee would just react accordingly. So play on.
00:23:14
Nathan AVFC
Yeah.
00:23:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Come on. like there there There's no foul there. But just the fact that... And and the way how ah how this forward fell...
00:23:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
in this penalty box. It was just so unnatural. And from, like, you do not even have to be an expert to see that it was ah a blatant dive. It was just a blatant dive and the referee fell for it.
00:23:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'm pretty sure that if Premier League has got any brains inside their heads, then I hope that this referee will take a hiatus from refereeing Premier League games.
00:23:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
But then again, Michael Oliver was also officiating some games even after that, you know.
00:23:49
Nathan AVFC
And somebody said on the, I watched a fan cam and they said that this was the same referee that was the VAR official when when they sent Martinelli off when he got two yellow, I think he got a yeah two yellow cards in the same phase of play when he blocked he blocked the ball. And then later on down the field, he got another yellow in the same phase.
00:24:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah this like Oh, sake.
00:24:13
Nathan AVFC
So I was like, wow, that's an interesting point.
00:24:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, God.
00:24:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, Nathan, does that mean that we are eating, like that we are actually ah jumping on the bandwagon of Arsenal fans on Twitter or X clay claiming that the league is rigged against them?
00:24:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is that what's going on?
00:24:31
Nathan AVFC
I mean, they they've had some things go against them, but I wouldn't go as far as say that it's like a vendetta against them. But usually, I'm not going to say what teams, I'm not going to go down that rabbit hole, but there is certain teams you get more decisions than others.
00:24:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:24:50
Nathan AVFC
And Arsenal are not one of them, in my opinion.
00:24:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah. that there were far There were far worse decisions which were given not against Arsenal, but against some other teams, just I agree.
00:25:01
Nathan AVFC
Yeah.
00:25:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely so. So um about that title, I think we've just covered everything that was important about Liverpool and Arsenal. ah Let's quickly move on to what was going on elsewhere on the other places of the Premier League table, because those are also equally important.
00:25:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm talking about the teams which couldn't hold positions third and sixth. after the game of course which is Aston Villa taking on Nottingham Forest at Villa Park here Nathan you are the Villa fan so I will just go straight to the question of how did you enjoy the game and how did you enjoy um Aston Villa beating the newcomers on the block for the European positions
00:25:44
Nathan AVFC
Well, I remember sitting watching the Villa Forest, the return fixture earlier in the season. So frustrated because we were 1-0 up for virtually the entire match. And then we lost it in the last four or five minutes.
00:26:01
Nathan AVFC
They scored two and we lost 2-1. So I was just fuming about that. So just to beat them because of that and get a bit of revenge was sweet. But um yeah, I thought we...
00:26:13
Nathan AVFC
Like, we scored two goals in two minutes. Thielemans with that lovely ball over to Rodgers. Great touch. And then he just finished with his left foot. That's just the typical Rodgers finish. And then, um well, the Netherlands connection.
00:26:30
Nathan AVFC
Mattson beat his man down the left. Crosses it in. And then Daniel Marlen scored his his first Premier League goal for us. Yeah, it's just um that there's a lot to be...
00:26:42
Nathan AVFC
enthusiastic about as a Villa fan. um I was more worried about with the Champions League and i know now we're through to the final four of the FA Cup. I was more worried about the volume of matches and whether we can continue to win in the Premier League because I thought we would drop off.
00:26:59
Nathan AVFC
But where we are right now is like pushing for that top four, top five place. um and that but i mean, being in a team like Nottingham Forest, they've been ah been in exceptional form this season. so I mean, Murillo did hit ah a left foot rocket from 30 yards.
00:27:18
Nathan AVFC
They hit the crossbar and that was a really good effort.
00:27:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah.
00:27:23
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, a little bit like the defending at times still concerns me. I mean, with the Jota goal was a bit hesitancy from Mings and Konza to get out and pressure the ball and he just swiveled and finished.
00:27:37
Nathan AVFC
If you do that against PSG, for example, or even Crystal Palace in the final four of the FA Cup, you'll get punished a immediately. um And we've got away with it in a couple of games.
00:27:50
Nathan AVFC
ah But we beat

Unai Emery's Strategy at Aston Villa

00:27:54
Nathan AVFC
Brighton 3-0 in the week and then beat Forest. There's two good teams we've beaten, so I'm really happy this week. um
00:28:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't blame you. I do not really blame you.
00:28:02
Nathan AVFC
But I'd sacrifice all these wins to beat PSG. Let's just put it there.
00:28:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know what? Actually, you ah you kind of, maybe inadvertently, you touched on a very interesting topic because not so long time ago, everyone was complaining at Unai Emery as to how he's not rotating the squad, how he just kid cannot manage ah combining Champions League with Premier League.
00:28:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like he's dropping points in the domestic league. Whereas in Europe, he they are really even overachieving, somebody might say. And now it's the situation when everyone is praising Mune Emery for how he's doing so well in and rotating the squad.
00:28:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think part of that, I don't know whether you agree with me, but part of that has to do with the new arrivals that came to Villa Park and in in winter.
00:28:46
Nathan AVFC
yeah
00:28:50
Nathan AVFC
No, I 100% agree. um I think he's just gathered a really strong core of players, um especially with the... Because he's basically gotten rid of players like Wendia and is he's everyone he's brought in as Champions League experience. So De Sassi, Marlon, Rashford and Asensio, they all have ah degree in and an international experience as well.
00:29:18
Nathan AVFC
So you can tell what the plan was and all those players are contributing. Well, all of them scored against Brighton in the week. It was Asensio, Marlon and Rashford.
00:29:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:29:27
Nathan AVFC
So, um yeah. ah And then we've got the... Paul Torres is just coming back from injury also. That's a big boost for our defence. um Tielemans has been really good. We've got Onana to bring in.
00:29:41
Nathan AVFC
Just ah that we've got a lot of strength in depth. and yeah January was huge. Considering a team like Arsenal, who didn't really bring anybody in when they needed it and ah in January, we really strengthened.
00:29:54
Nathan AVFC
You can tell it's paying off. Without those players, we would we wouldn't get these victories. I think Rashford has been been a really good player in the last couple weeks.
00:30:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:30:05
Nathan AVFC
don't want to say that to a Man United fan, but
00:30:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
no No, no, no, no, I agree. And i not not only do I agree, but I also doubled down on it saying that the link up between Asensio and Rushford are one of the most but one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in football.
00:30:20
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, ah ah got the chance
00:30:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm really shipping it. I'm shipping it.
00:30:24
Nathan AVFC
I got the chance to go back to England to the Villa Bruges game in the Champions League a couple weeks ago. and It was a poor first half, but second half, like ra Rashford and Asensio came on and the class level is just, it's a different level to what we've been used to.
00:30:43
Nathan AVFC
ah so yes How we have Asensio right now is just crazy.
00:30:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:30:46
Nathan AVFC
like he's ah He's a level above anything we've got. Yeah, we're fortunate.
00:30:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. Well, former Real Madrid player.
00:30:53
Nathan AVFC
Very good recruitment, I suppose. Yeah.
00:30:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Former Real Madrid player, what else can you expect? But, you know, maybe enough talking about Aston Villa because ah let's just focus slightly on Nottingham Forest and what on earth is happening there because especially the reason why those youth guys scored those two goals, it was mainly because of so so much disorganization in Nottingham Forest's defense.
00:31:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is something that ah if someone pays close attention to Premier League, doesn't really see that much often from the Nunoz Pirito Santos side.
00:31:25
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, no, it's true. that The first goal, the Tielemans one, where he's lofted it over to Rodgers, he was in a lot of space. And it's early in the game. So that's pretty abnormal for Forrest. I know that they lost Ola Aina to injury.
00:31:40
Nathan AVFC
He's been really, really performing well this season. So that's taken like a cog out of their team. But um yeah, i think Milenkovic and Murillo have been really, really strong this season.
00:31:52
Nathan AVFC
So that that was strange. And then um even the second goal, you found Yates trying to close down Mattson on the wing. And Yates is a centre midfielder.
00:32:03
Nathan AVFC
So, yeah, I think you're right. There was a lot of disorganisation.
00:32:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:32:07
Nathan AVFC
We tend to start pretty well in games like that, you especially at Villa Park. um But yeah, we kind of faded off in the second half, but I think we just caught them in the first 20 minutes a little bit cold um and we with the intensity and how we attacked.
00:32:24
Nathan AVFC
Yeah.
00:32:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and and and and actually when I remember the commentator of the game ah like commenting on the ineptivity for his defense, ah he just claimed one thing.
00:32:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I really have no... my belief, and my belief Those players have no idea how to set up the the back line because they were used to ka completely different system of playing. And then they went from three center backs to all of a sudden to four and back line.
00:32:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then all of a sudden to five. And then the question rose of who's covering who? And that is basically, one and behold, what happened in those two, but especially with this goal scored by Rodgers.
00:33:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, that was just a showcase of disorganization in the back four or back three or back five or whatever back they had out there.
00:33:05
Nathan AVFC
Yeah.
00:33:10
Nathan AVFC
Yeah.
00:33:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if anyone has to be... Okay, but here's maybe me defending the players. Was that just some disorganization matter but among the players or was that a plan of Nuno Spirit of Santa which just failed?
00:33:28
Nathan AVFC
I'd probably say ah more the plan from Nuno, to be honest. Because if they're setting up in a way to prevent Villa from playing or with their back line, and then it's just that it was so early in the game.
00:33:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:33:43
Nathan AVFC
I think we scored on 15 minutes and 17 minutes. So for them to have such a wide open space for Rodgers to run into and be open, without any and he wasn't challenged with a free shot goal inside the box, that's worrying.
00:33:58
Nathan AVFC
um Was it Murata or was it? Oh, yeah. yeah So, what they what they did was they had Dominguez in at right back and went to a back three with Morata.
00:34:09
Nathan AVFC
So, yeah, you're right. like They've been with a back four the entire season and then the injury to Aina, they've gone with a back three, which they're not used to. So, that's probably...
00:34:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:34:19
Nathan AVFC
They've tried something new and probably just hasn't worked. Yeah. we We tend to... um find those good spaces in between like fullback and center back with Emory's system.
00:34:32
Nathan AVFC
We always do.
00:34:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah, because you have some stability in the squad. And and and again, we can just go back to to praising Villa, which you will have no problem doing.
00:34:38
Nathan AVFC
Yeah.
00:34:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But we really have to move on. Just on a quick note, Aston Villa, after this victory, ah you...
00:34:45
Nathan AVFC
Yeah.
00:34:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh right now you have exactly scored 46 goals and conceded 46 goals. So now your difference is exactly zero.
00:34:57
Nathan AVFC
Yeah.
00:34:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah what is so kind of Which is kind of interesting because there are teams with a better ah goal difference which are far, far lower than Aston Villa.
00:34:57
Nathan AVFC
Yeah.
00:35:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
So now Aston Villa, 51 points after 31 games. Just one point of difference to the advantage of Manchester City which sits fifth.
00:35:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the two points of difference to Chelsea which is fourth. There is still a good chance that you can catch both Man City and Chelsea and sit fourth in the Champions League place. And to be honest, with Forrest in such bad form, you still guys have a chance of actually finishing above Forrest if Forrest doesn't get their stuff together.
00:35:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's putting it mildly. Okay, let's take a break and then we'll discuss all of the ah other action which happened in match week number 31 in Premier League.
00:35:35
Nathan AVFC
Yeah.
00:36:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you, Zencaster, for sponsoring our podcast. You're listening to Daily English Premier League Podcast brought to you by Global Sports Podcast Network. So, Nathan, what else happened this with last weekend that we would we should talk about?
00:36:29
Nathan AVFC
um ah Well, there was a ah big game down at the bottom between Ipswich and Wolves. um I dubbed it as the Glimmer of Hope game for Ipswich, as there were there were nine points behind Wolves.
00:36:41
Nathan AVFC
And then their head-to-head against Wolves in this game pretty much gives them a slim chance of survival. um And yeah, they took the lead with a um lap goal from a... my god, I forgot his name.
00:36:58
Nathan AVFC
Dara O'Shea headed it back across the box. And then De Lapp just got his foot to it in front of the defender and 1-0. So you'd think you'd be thinking, can they go and push on and get a second?
00:37:11
Nathan AVFC
And Wolves really stepped it up in the second half. And ah even without Cunha, like Strand Larsson has really stepped up. I think he's got four goals in three games and he got another goal.
00:37:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Copy.
00:37:23
Nathan AVFC
And then Sarabia with a great goal as well. So, yeah, I think that's their Achilles heel, Ipswich. They've just conceded too many goals. They always tend to concede.
00:37:35
Nathan AVFC
I think they lost to Southampton as well, if I'm not mistaken, in their head-to-head. So, yeah, that was that was important because I think that's just, that's potentially put Ipswich down now.
00:37:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
coey
00:37:48
Nathan AVFC
um And that would probably, there's a chance that the three that are in the relegation now will be the three worst teams ever. to go down in terms of points.
00:37:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:37:58
Nathan AVFC
So that's kind of worrying for teams who are getting promoted into the Premier
00:38:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, to be honest, like Gipswich, Leicester, Southampton, with Southampton already confirmed as a team which has 0% chance of staying up in the

Southampton's Historic Relegation

00:38:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Premier League. So they are the first team confirmed to go but to get relegated to Championship.
00:38:13
Nathan AVFC
League.
00:38:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that is, by the way, the earliest um the earliest relegation in Premier League history because Southampton, they still got seven games left to play and they are already confirmed as the relegated.
00:38:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah team. I just want to go back quickly to this Ipswich Wolves game because it was in that game that we so that was something happened which we do not really see very often and that was the indirect free kick ah from I believe it was four five meters for Wolves?
00:38:42
Nathan AVFC
ah
00:38:46
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, think it was Palmer, the Ipswich keeper, went to put his foot over the top of the ball and then he he basically clawed it off the line with his hand and they gave an indirect free kick.
00:38:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palma.
00:38:58
Nathan AVFC
yeah Yeah, to be honest with you, had to kind of rack my brain about the rules of the sport because I don't remember that happening very often. I didn't even know that was a rule.
00:39:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:39:10
Nathan AVFC
um
00:39:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, apparently. Yeah, yeah.
00:39:11
Nathan AVFC
I just thought it was if you pick it up, I thought.
00:39:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, like, I knew that. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Nah, nah, nah, nah.
00:39:15
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, that was odd I think they're they're complaining about that with Twitch.
00:39:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:39:20
Nathan AVFC
But if it's in the laws, then it's in the laws.
00:39:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is. And to be honest, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'd actually known known that to to to be a fact, like this rule that you are not allowed to pass to your own goalkeeper when you're not being pressured. So that's that's absolutely, that that that is one or one of one of football rules.
00:39:33
Nathan AVFC
Yeah.
00:39:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So thanks to that victory, Wolves, they ah have made one step further towards staying up in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace's Dominance Over Brighton

00:39:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Another game which was pretty interesting, Crystal Palace taking on Brighton, three cent-offs in the entire game, and Crystal Palace dominating Brighton and with two goals, then winning the game with two goals to one.
00:39:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anything significant about this game from personality standpoint?
00:40:00
Nathan AVFC
Well, the player I wanted to highlight from this game was Eze. He took the two assists for both Mateta and Munoz. I just think he's had a really good like two weeks of scoring the goal in the the FA Cup quarterfinals.
00:40:19
Nathan AVFC
And then he got his England goal and in the international break. And then now he's got um he's contributing again. um think he's probably rivaling Rodgers for a spot in the England team, maybe even England starting 11.
00:40:35
Nathan AVFC
um But yeah, Mateta scored a screamer as well. That was a really good finish. um And yeah, Munoz is just like, not having him in my FPL team, for example, is just killing me because he's just so good.
00:40:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:40:50
Nathan AVFC
He's attacking output. He's just like really good right wing back for them. um But yeah, I know that the they were really poor again, right, and in the first half.
00:41:02
Nathan AVFC
And then they they got the goal with Welbeck early in the first half. But it was just a little too late. I think they've kind of... don't know. that Them and West Ham are trying to kind of find their identity, I think, under their new managers.
00:41:16
Nathan AVFC
I don't feel like they are where they want to be. And... and Yeah, I just don't think like Mitoma and Adingra, they're very good players, but they're just not clicking at the moment.
00:41:30
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, and Jao Pedro. Yeah, they've just got to get back to where they were earlier in the season.
00:41:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's what they have to do. and and So that was a pretty entertaining ah game. In the other result, West Ham drew against Bournemouth with the two goals each.

Brentford's Strong Showing Against Chelsea

00:41:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bournemouth continuing the, well, maybe lack of form. I think that's what we're going to have to ah say about Bournemouth's side. I mean, for example, Ilya Zarbani, one of the best... sent it back that the Premier League's had in recent history.
00:42:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Zabani having a poor game as well. um but But maybe we shouldn't be talking too much about that. Brentford-Chelsea, that was a super ah interesting... result especially from my point of view, because Chelsea is scheduled to play Legia Warsaw on April 10th.
00:42:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Chelsea, not only did they fail to score, but they also were on the brink of losing because Brentford were a far better team at ah at some points. Like, would you would you share my point there?
00:42:33
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, I mean, we know about Brentford earlier in the season had that incredible home record. So they're always going to be a tough team to play at the GTEC. And yeah, think they they threatened. Wisser had a good header that was just narrowly past the post.
00:42:48
Nathan AVFC
Embraimou had a couple of shots. I know Vandenberg, the centre-back, missed basically a free header in inside the six-yard box.
00:42:59
Nathan AVFC
He headed it down into the ground. So, they yeah, Chelsea are very fortunate. Very fortunate to to come away with anything. And with Man City dropping points and then Chelsea dropping points, Newcastle have two games in hand. So, the ah whole kind of top four race is still kind of wide open.
00:43:22
Nathan AVFC
Villa are pushing up towards that now as well. We were down in tenths, but we're going closer. So, all these games count. But, yeah, just think Chelsea in attack is just... It's been pretty poor.
00:43:33
Nathan AVFC
ah Jackson was injured and Palmer's been out of form. and um Sancho and Madueke and Neto have just not hit any rhythm at all.
00:43:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah. and and And that is visible. That is absolutely visible. And that is very good news for Legia as they ah went go on to face Chelsea in the quarterfinals of the Conference League on April 10th in the first leg.
00:44:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
There will be a preview of the of the game Legia was also taking on Chelsea. So if you guys are interested in that, then check out and stay tuned to Daily English Premier League because we will be discussing that game in more detail.
00:44:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And just to finish off our, um well, our review, Tottenham defeating Southampton with three goals to one. And just like we mentioned, Tottenham just putting the final nail to the Southampton coffin and the Saints ah dropping and being getting relegated from Premier League.
00:44:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it was a long overdue, wasn't it?
00:44:34
Nathan AVFC
yeah yeah i just southampton have just i mean you said that point about they're the quickest team to be relegated but for them now that they want to avoid the derby county comparisons because they need to they need to get two points to not to get the same or more than what derby county we got in their worst ever premier league season so they're relegated now but they need two points so they need to get a win or two draws so yeah
00:44:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oof. Oof.
00:45:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, no. on
00:45:04
Nathan AVFC
Yeah, just just really, for me, it's just a championship squad. And then when Russell Martin was in place earlier in the season, to play that way out from the back and after what happened to Burnley last season with that same style, it's kind of crazy to have that philosophy.
00:45:22
Nathan AVFC
um but jump The jump from the championship to the Premier League is really significant to play that style.
00:45:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah.
00:45:30
Nathan AVFC
It's commendable, but this is what happens. You can easily... get relegated with that kind of style.
00:45:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. ah No Jan Bednarik anymore in the Premier League starting from next season. That's going to be a very big debacle for the Polish national team coach. So those are all of the games which happened already in the weekend. We still have one game to preview. It's just is going to be a short preview. i just ask you about your predicted scoreline.
00:45:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Leicester taking on Newcastle. Great opportunity for the Eddie Howe side to pick up three points on Leicester, which is also bound for relegation. ah What is your prediction there?
00:46:10
Nathan AVFC
um I'm probably going to say to Newcastle. um They really, really struggle to score Leicester. And I think I saw a stat, even when um when they lost to Man United, that they hadn't scored in like seven home games in a row, even before that game.
00:46:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:46:30
Nathan AVFC
And then that was another game. So they they've really are just not hitting the back of the net. ah And Newcastle's defence is pretty strong. then with the, with Izak and Bruno and Harvey Barnes and Murphy, the way they're playing, you can only sense that they will, they'll create chances and get goals.
00:46:53
Nathan AVFC
I know there's a murmuring, Izak may be injured or he's kind of, he's touch and go. But even with Wilson to come in, you think they'll have him. But yeah, can't see past the Newcastle win, especially with them chasing the top four.
00:47:07
Nathan AVFC
Um, Yeah, I'd say two now.
00:47:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
2-0. Okay, you heard it here, folks, and for the first time. Okay, so that basically wraps up the entire um monday brief Monday review of all the action of the Premier League with ah Nathan, the AVFC fan.
00:47:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you so, so much for joining us. And we're hoping to see you in other episodes too.
00:47:31
Nathan AVFC
Thank you.
00:47:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we just we're just really looking forward to seeing you again, man.
00:47:38
Nathan AVFC
Thank you. ah look forward to um the next round of games.
