The Amazing Rewatch: Hey, everybody. Welcome back ah to The Amazing Rewatch season 19, episode 11, the last episode we fought before the finale of this good season.
The Amazing Rewatch: It's maybe one of my favorites so far, I think. Yeah. it's ah ah I agree. It's a solid season. Yeah. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: This is also a good episode. Very exciting. Yes. um The teams we left off in Belgium, they had the pit stop at the Atonium in Brussels. think it's the Atomium. Atomium, yeah. then Atomium, yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: Because it's like an atom. And they got to actually sleep in there. Yeah. like It looks like each of the little... protons?
The Amazing Rewatch: I don't know. I don't know. Ask me anything about chemistry or it's been a long time since I've taken a science class, but they're like a little sleep pod. Um, but Andy and Tommy got to customize their Mustangs while they were there.
The Amazing Rewatch: What color would you pick if you got a Mustang and you got to pick whatever color you want? Um, probably black.
The Amazing Rewatch: that's a good one. I kind of liked the dark blue that one of them got or like a dark red. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. yeah Yeah. Well, probably will never happen. So don't have to think too much about it. Andy and in Tommy, they depart at 3.46 a.m.
The Amazing Rewatch: And the clue says, use the costumes in the package to dress as two of the favorite comic strip characters. And you must figure out that they must figure out that they are detectives known as one of three names from the comic strip, The Adventures of Tintin. And then they have to locate the mural in the picture and tell Tintin what they learned.
The Amazing Rewatch: So, yeah i again, it's like 3.46 a.m., middle of the night. Yeah. And there's not a lot of people out. They're dressed in these hats with little, ah like, so, like, black bowler hats, black suits, and mustaches. Mm-hmm.
The Amazing Rewatch: And apparently there are detectives called Johnson, Johnson. Thompson and Thompson. Thompson, Thompson or. DuPont and DuPont. Yeah. So they can say any of those names to Tintin.
The Amazing Rewatch: Jeremy and Sandy depart 430 and Ernie and Cindy at 435 and Imani and Marcus at 440. So all these teams are kind of out and about trying to ask people for help on this clue.
The Amazing Rewatch: and it's basically just like. People that have been in the bar all night yeah and just like out and they're all drunk and nobody knows. Yeah. Some guy tells Andy and Tommy that they look like Charlie. Yeah. He's like, it looks like you're related to Charlie Chaplin. And then they go find this like internet cafe and like with Charlie Chaplin in mind, they somehow...
The Amazing Rewatch: get confirmed that they think that's who it is. They're like, that guy was right. So they go to the Tintin person and say Charlie Chaplin and he tells them no so they have to keep looking. um Jeremy and Sandy do find the right guy and he tells them Tintin and he says Johnson and Johnson.
The Amazing Rewatch: he knows everything. He knows where the mural is. So they found the right person. And i think Ernie and Monty and Marcus find the same guy. That Jeremy and Sandy found.
The Amazing Rewatch: Once you touch down, travel by boat up the Chagras River to the village of Pararapuru to get your next clue. Pararapuru.
The Amazing Rewatch: And so they're pretty excited. They're headed to across the ocean. Heading to Panama. And Ernie and cindy pass off and get the clue. And Amarni and Marcus get the clue. And Andy and Tommy get it last. but All teams get to the train station in Amsterdam and on the same flight to Panama. so they're all And they board the train in their costumes yeah like you didn't want to change. yeah Have you heard of the Adventures of Tintin?
The Amazing Rewatch: I've seen... Like when the movie was made however many years ago. Oh yeah. Did you know that also the Smurfs is a Belgian creation? don't know.
The Amazing Rewatch: There's like Smurf murals all over the walls in the Brussels airport. Oh, I didn't know that. um Didn't do um Steven Spielberg do Adventures of Tintin? I don't know. I don't think I watched it.
The Amazing Rewatch: Who even was in it? yeah Um, well, it's like, uh, yeah, Steven Spielberg directed it. It's like a animated... so it's just voices. Oh.
The Amazing Rewatch: When was it made? In 2011. Oh, like right around this time? Yeah. Steven Spielberg directed it, but I think, um...
The Amazing Rewatch: ah The guy who made the Lord of the Rings. Peter Jackson. Peter Jackson like helped him a lot with it. Those are big part of it.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah, that would be kind of scary. yeah I don't think I would like to be because they're motorized boat on a little boat like that yeah in the dark. Jeremy and Sandy's boat actually gets stuck on a sandbar. Yeah. And Andy and Tommy are the first to arrive and they sign up for one of three times to receive a a tattoo the next morning.
The Amazing Rewatch: They're 7 o'clock, 7.20 and 7.40. So Andy and Tommy sign up for 7 o'clock, Jeremy and Sandy 7.20 and then Imani Marcus and Ernie and Cindy at 7.40.
The Amazing Rewatch: And they get to sleep in hammocks for the night. Under mosquito nets. Yeah. Yeah, they're like in the middle of nowhere, in the pitch black. Yeah. A very small, remote village in Panama.
The Amazing Rewatch: Is there there like any other major cities in Panama besides Panama City? i don't think so. We can talk about Panama. This is our second time to Panama. The last time we were there was season eight.
The Amazing Rewatch: Okay. The family season. um It's a fascinating country that serves as the bridge between North and South America, um but it's pretty small. It has a lot of biodiversity and geopolitics thanks to the famous Panama Canal.
The Amazing Rewatch: It has about 4.5 million people. The official language is Spanish. The currency is the Panamanian.
The Amazing Rewatch: panamanian yeah Balboa? Balboa. And the U.S. dollar. That comes into here in the lake somewhere. so they have two official currencies. They have the Balboa and the dollar.
The Amazing Rewatch: well um The U.S. dollar is used for almost all everyday transactions. A presidential republic. And... It borders Costa Rica, Colombia, the Caribbean Sea, and the Pacific Ocean.
The Amazing Rewatch: um In parts of Panama, you can watch the sunrise over the Pacific and set over the Caribbean because the country's curved shape.
The Amazing Rewatch: The sunrise in the Pacific? Sunrise over the Pacific. i don't know why it says that. It's set over the Caribbean. Because it's a curved shape.
The Amazing Rewatch: Sun rises in the east. Right? Yeah. So would be opposite. But maybe that's what it's like. Does it like curve up enough that like.
The Amazing Rewatch: Oh, maybe. i don't know. I don't know. There's mountains, volcanoes, rainforests, beaches, and over 1500 islands. The Panama Canal is one of the greatest engineering achievements in history. opened in 1914. It connects the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans.
The Amazing Rewatch: It saves ships thousands of miles by avoiding the tip the trip around Cape Horn. And it expanded in 2016 to accommodate much larger ships.
The Amazing Rewatch: Like cruise ships. Yes. We were just talking about cruises that go through the Panama Canal, which they do. they They either start in California, like l LA, and then end in Fort Lauderdale or vice versa. Usually it's kind of like the traditional route. I'm sure there's others too, but it would be interesting to like sail through that.
The Amazing Rewatch: See how it works. Mm-hmm. Indigenous peoples have lived in Panama for thousands of years. In 1501, Europeans arrived and was colonized by Spain for over 300 years. It became part of Colombia after the independence from Spain.
The Amazing Rewatch: In 1903, Panama became independent with U.S. s support. And during the 20th century military ruler Manuel Norieja led the country until the 1989 US invasion. Since then Panama has become one of Latin America's more stable democracies.
The Amazing Rewatch: His major industries are shipping and tourism and construction and trade. And
The Amazing Rewatch: um they have jaguars, sloths, monkeys, sea turtles and colorful frogs.
The Amazing Rewatch: And
The Amazing Rewatch: I sent some clients to Panama a few months ago, actually. theyre They're like clients that have traveled a lot of places. And they're like, we just we want something different, but we want like an all-inclusive resort. And Panama was something that they had like researched a little bit and I suggested and They really liked it.
The Amazing Rewatch: and so There's not that many resorts, but there's a couple. And some of them are really nice. Well, Amani and Marcus won a trip to Panama. Oh, yeah, they did. At one of the nice resorts. Yeah. so Last episode. Or the before. The one before. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. So these teams wake up the next day and get ready for their tattoos. But they're not real tattoos. They are not permanent. Yeah. Basically like penna. Yeah. yeah and their tattoos say the word um San Francisco Bay. San Francisco Bay, which there are San Francisco Bay towers in Panama City. Yeah. I was like, oh, no. Are we already going to our final city? That's crazy. Yeah. That's what I thinking, too.
The Amazing Rewatch: um So the teams get back on their boats and head back to wherever taxis are at and get in taxis to go to this San Francisco Bay Towers.
The Amazing Rewatch: And Andy and Tommy get there first. and Jeremy and Sandy are right behind them. But the clue there is a roadblock. And it says... um Who wants to walk in rarefied air? Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: And on the clue, like, it does, like, show a little shot of it really quick. And it says... These people must do the roadblock because yeah they're at the point where some have already done their six. So Andy has to do it and Sandy has to do it.
The Amazing Rewatch: And Andy's really excited. Sandy is not. Sandy's very scared of heights. She is not looking forward to this. um But it seems like they have to kind of do it in order of because like Andy gets up there and Sandy kind of has to wait till Andy's finished before she can start.
The Amazing Rewatch: As far as I could tell. But Andy does it really easily. and then Sandy goes and even though she's scared and does not like it, she does well and like doesn't freak out too much.
The Amazing Rewatch: And the clue they get, it says now teams must now figure out that their clue is sending them to the statue of Ferdinand de Lesseps. Delesseps. Delesseps. Delesseps. Or something. Ferdinand de Delesseps to find their next clue.
The Amazing Rewatch: Is that something about like under the rooster? him beneath rooster. Because there's a rooster on the top of his yeah statue. And Ernie and Cindy arrive and Imani and Marcus. So Cindy does it and then Imani. And um Jeremy and Sandy's driver knows. This kind of sets off like a series of events that yeah changes the outcome of this race. Because the the taxi drivers are working together. Like so while the teams are up at the top doing this roadblock.
The Amazing Rewatch: They're like talking to each other and like getting phone numbers and like, yeah, like they know that, you know, they obviously are like, okay, we're on a show. We're going to be the taxi drivers for these teams for however many clues they have to find. Yeah. So they, one driver knows exactly where this statue is. Yeah. And he tells all the other drivers where it is.
The Amazing Rewatch: And so Andy and Tommy get to the statue first and the clue there is a detour and the choices are filet or sole. So for filet, they have to travel to the largest fish market in Panama and deliver assorted seafood to different vendors scattered throughout the market.
The Amazing Rewatch: And sole, they have to go to like this cobbler shop and work with a single piece of leather ah to build a sandal. They make the sole and the straps and make one pair of sandals.
The Amazing Rewatch: I think we would pick sole. Yeah. Just because neither – I don't think I would want to smell like fish. Yeah. The whole time. And like we're crafty and good at making stuff.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. But I think that that one takes longer. Yeah. so Cindy or Annie and Tommy choose soul and Jeremy and Sandy do as well. And um again, the drivers are kind of following each other to this place.
The Amazing Rewatch: And Annie and Tommy or Ernie and Cindy choose soul and Imani and Marcus choose filet. They always choose the opposite one as everybody else. Yeah. I feel like. But Imani Marcus's driver takes them to Seoul.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. Because they're working together. Yeah. And he's like, you took us to the wrong place. working with friends. You've with your friends and you took us to the wrong place. Well, when they arrive there, they see that the other teams are there, and then they turn around and go get back in their taxis. But on the way, Amani was like, do we want to just do this one? Like, how do you feel about doing this one, or do you think it's too hard? And Marcus is like, I think it's going to be too hard. So they do still switch. Mm-hmm.
The Amazing Rewatch: I think that I would just stay. Like, if we're already here. yeah But they were really, it worked out well for them, as we will see, for them to switch and do the other one. So.
The Amazing Rewatch: So, um and the whole time the teams are talking about how lucky Andy and Tommy are. They're so lucky. Everything they do, they just have all this luck.
The Amazing Rewatch: And they're not lucky. They just are, they're just consistent They have gotten kind of lucky in some first places in the fact that other teams have gotten penalties. That's true. But other than that, like, they're not lucky. They just are consistent and they are smart. Yeah. And they're fast and and strong and smart. and And they end up finishing the detour first. And the clue says, make your way to Cathedral Square.
The Amazing Rewatch: The teams must figure out the name of the pit stop, which is Panama Viejo, which is on one of the dancers' dresses. It's like words on the dress, but they're like yeah doing this dance in the square. But it also said that it's like with the markings on their medallions too.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. Which is it's like a picture of the yes place. Not necessarily the words right now. Um... So all the other teams are kind of working on their sandals and Monty and Marcus are doing the fish thing.
The Amazing Rewatch: ah Marcus was like, we're lucky that we're the only team here because i don't understand this really, but like there's a bunch of different stalls. And if they already had the pounds of a certain fish from like another team, they wouldn't accept it from that team. So they don't have to compete against any other teams doing this. They can just go to any stall with any fish and pass it off.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. So that was good. And they did it pretty quickly. Yeah. Because they finished the detour second. And they are covered in fish juice. Yeah. Smell like fish all day.
The Amazing Rewatch: And andy and Tommy get to the plaza. and They're looking for the name. And so these dancers have a bunch of medallions all over them. One of the big ones is the picture of the place, but all these little ones is like so the money. Says Balboa. Yeah, the money, which says Balboa.
The Amazing Rewatch: And so Andy and Tommy think that's what they're looking for. And Tommy's like, do you think that's what it is? And tom Andy's like, yeah, that's it for sure. Yeah. And...
The Amazing Rewatch: Ernie and Cindy finish the detour and then Jeremy and Sandy. So, Imani and Marcus, Ernie and Cindy, and Jeremy and Sandy are kind of all at the plaza at the same time looking for the word that they're supposed to be looking for.
The Amazing Rewatch: and they know that Andy and Tommy have already come through. So, they're like yeah a little bit frantic knowing that they have to figure this out before the other two teams. And Andy and Tommy, they get dropped off at the Panama Canal. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: Their driver takes them there. and they ask a guy there and he's like, yeah, you can go to Balboa. There's like a statue. So their driver takes them there. And they don't see if the pit stop there. So they ask to be taken back to the plaza. Yeah. and Ernie and Cindy get the word Balboa until their driver Balboa. Mm hmm.
The Amazing Rewatch: Jeremy and Sandy, Jeremy draws the picture of of the building. building on the Yeah, that's on the medallion. And goes and tells his driver and the driver's like, oh, that's Panama Piego.
The Amazing Rewatch: yeah And Imani Imani and Marcus, they say Balboa to their driver. But on the way to all these different places, the drivers call each other. Yeah. And talk.
The Amazing Rewatch: And they figure out it's Panama Viejo, not Balboa. So, and Ernie and Cindy, their driver's name is Juan. And they're like, we've been relying on Juan all day. He's got us where we need to be. We'll just trust him at this point. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: Which was smart. That's kind of frustrating for Sandy and Jeremy to like, they were the only ones that actually figured out where to go. Mm-hmm. It does end up that they are team number one.
The Amazing Rewatch: So it's it's fine. And I think, well, yeah. So Jeremy and Sandy are team number one. Are we basically here? Yeah. And they win a trip to Turks and Caicos.
The Amazing Rewatch: And then Ernie and Cindy run up and they're team number two. And then they know that Amani and Marcus are somewhere. Right behind them. Yeah. So they're like all kind of like running around these grounds at the same time. And they're like, Amani, Marcus, come on. Like, come here. Come here. And as Amani and Marcus are running out, they're like, we did it, you guys. We did it. Because I think they all knew that Andy and Tommy are the strongest team. They did not want them to be in the finals. So I guess in a way, like and ah Jeremy and Sandy, since they still were team one,
The Amazing Rewatch: But their driver told the other two taxis where to go. it actually ended up working out for them that these these three teams made it to the finals. Yeah. So they're all very, very excited.
The Amazing Rewatch: and But unfortunately, we have to say goodbye to Andy and Tommy. They are eliminated. And yeah it's kind of a bummer. It's like, yeah, only one of the four teams actually got the answer right.
The Amazing Rewatch: But those taxi drivers literally... made the game today and andy and tommy they were pretty far ahead when they were going to like ah balboa and all that stuff yeah and they've played a really good game and they've won six first leg first places first places and and yeah won cars and lots of trips and yeah money i think so yeah they won like seven five hundred dollars at one point they won a mustang they won trips So they're probably happy and they did well and they should be proud of themselves. They say that they wouldn't change anything even though I don't think that's true. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: They were really supportive of each other. They didn't ever have conflicts with any other teams. They were really respectful and funny and entertaining. And fun. Yeah. And just raced well.
The Amazing Rewatch: So I did. i have been saying up to this point, like I know who wins, but I don't remember who's in the top three. But when I was looking on like all the statistics and stuff right before we watched this, I did see that Andy and Tommy were in fourth place. So when they got to... like that plaza first and the other teams were all like really not really far behind but like still pretty far behind I was like something is gonna happen because they get eliminated and what what could go wrong from this point to the end was a little crazy because her dress it wasn't that obvious Yeah, it was like, it just looked like the pattern of the dress. Yeah. And it was only one girl out of like eight girls.
The Amazing Rewatch: And yeah, that was really hard. And if they tell you to like look at the medallions and all of them say Balboa, like that, I mean, it would be really easy for your you to think that that's what you're supposed to do. Yeah. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: But yeah. And it was also really funny because like the the final three teams were on the mat. And Phil says like, how does it feel to beat out Andy and Tommy who have won six legs of this race already? And Marcus, who's like probably almost seven feet tall. He's like, he's like it's a David and Goliath situation. They're the Goliaths and we're the Davids. And I'm like, sir. Yeah. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. You are closer to Goliath than anybody I've ever seen. Yeah. He is a big guy. He's nice, though. Oh, yeah. I wonder how tall he really is.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. I don't know. Well, yeah, tell us about Andy and Tommy. Okay. So, Andy and Tommy... They obviously have a really fantastic race average. 2.64. They took first place in legs 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 10.
The Amazing Rewatch: They took seventh place in leg one. And that was their worst placement. Mm-hmm. So... Obviously, they did really well. They were the only team in this season to win a leg but not make the final three.
The Amazing Rewatch: Because they won so many legs, the only other legs that people won Ernie and Cindy, Jeremy and Sandy, Amani and Marcus.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. And they all made it to the final three. Okay. So they're the first team of Olympians that we've had there There will be a couple other in future seasons. They have won the, let's see, most legs won by a team in a single race who was eliminated before the final leg.
The Amazing Rewatch: They are tied with Danny and Oswald for this. Oh, interesting. Yeah. And the first team to be eliminated in. i didn't think Danny and Oswald won that many ways. I didn't think so either. That's interesting. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: They're the first team to be eliminated in Panama. So when we were there for the family season, that must have been a non-elimination or a like a continuation. Yeah, I remember that episode. It was like they were doing like... They to find birds?
The Amazing Rewatch: Or was that in Costa Rica? They did something like they had to go up on like a skyscraper or they had to do some sort of bungee jump or something like that. And I remember the The family. What's their name? The really loud and mean family. The... Oh, shoot. The Aiello family? the a no that was the dad and the... And the... Like, the son-in-laws. Oh, yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: The Paolos. Paolos. Yeah.

The Amazing Rewatch: Andy and Tommy both have a Wikipedia page because they were in the Olympics. One was in, i think Andy was in the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake and Tommy was in 2006, which would have been in,
The Amazing Rewatch: I don't know. Is that Torino, Italy? don't know. Or is that before? 2006 Olympics.
The Amazing Rewatch: We were talking about Olympic locations because we were saying there should be a category on the floor. oh yeah. It'd be an intimidating category that people wouldn't want to challenge. Yeah, we'd we'd win just because nobody would challenge you. Well, Well, yeah. I was right, though.
The Amazing Rewatch: So, Torino, Italy. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: Okay, so they both have um Facebook and Instagram, and they're both pretty ah consistently posting on both of their social medias. What's Andy's last name?
The Amazing Rewatch: um Andy's last name is Finch.
The Amazing Rewatch: And it looks like he has two kids and he has no hair now. now No hair, no beard. He looks very different. i was literally going to ask Jessica that before she told us the information about because his hair was very thin at the top. Yeah, but it was long, but it looked like it was getting thin. Kind of. Yeah, it was like fuzzy and And he wore like a like a sweatband most of the season, too. Yeah. so yeah So he definitely looks different, but he has a lot of videos of him like on those those surfboards that like kind of come out of the water, like those motorized surfboards.
The Amazing Rewatch: um So it looks like he's still ah adventuring. and then Tommy, as far as I can tell, looks like he has three kids. And same, he's got a lot of like boating, surfing pictures. That looks like Lake Powell actually right there.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yep. Lake Powell. What's Tommy's last name? um His is harder. it is Cheschen, C-Z-E-S-C-H-I-N. c z e s c h i nne
The Amazing Rewatch: And it seems that Tommy has some ties to Utah because he has friends that have mutual friends with me that are from Utah.
The Amazing Rewatch: Facebook.
The Amazing Rewatch: Did either of them win the gold in snowboarding or like what were their... What did they do at the Olympics? Let's see. It did... Let me see. Andy...
The Amazing Rewatch: Andy Finch is an American snowboarder. His accomplishments include winning the overall U.S. Grand Prix halfpipe in 2003 and 2004.
The Amazing Rewatch: Oh, Andy was the one that was the 2006. It just says he competed in the Olympics, but it doesn't say
The Amazing Rewatch: um if he won or what place he got. And then,
The Amazing Rewatch: yeah Tommy is an American snowboarder. He competed in the men's halfpipe at the 2002 Winter Olympics, but again, it doesn't say any placing anything. Anything.
The Amazing Rewatch: So, doesn't seem like they,
The Amazing Rewatch: I mean, making it to the Olympics is a huge accomplishment, but they're, like, it doesn't have any placing, so they must not have placed high enough to notable. Mm-hmm.
The Amazing Rewatch: Okay. Well, they were good racers and I'm surprised they're not the finale. Yeah. I think everybody else is. a shock. There's a Reddit um chat about this and it was like, um Andy and Tommy were awesome in my opinion. One of the best teams ever to race. Super chill, humble, had a positive interaction. They were funny, a strong team, only to be tripped up by a fluke task just before the final three. Mm-hmm.
The Amazing Rewatch: Which is true. And i'm I mean, you can't really say for sure, but if they would have made it to do the finals, it's a good chance they could have won. Yeah. so Yeah. So I say that I like when they do more mind stuff in The Amazing Race. and But I think this one was too obscure.
The Amazing Rewatch: Too difficult. the just finding The clue on the dress. yes Yeah. Yeah. Especially... Like, if they would have just said, find the clue, and not said any... I don't know.
The Amazing Rewatch: If we don't know what the clue actually said, but if the clue said, like, look at the medallions, and then that's what everybody was looking at, then that, like, definitely throws them off. Mm-hmm. So.
The Amazing Rewatch: Because I like when they do things that it's, like, it doesn't give it to you just directly. Like, I like when they have to figure it out. But this one was too... weird yeah but and shockingly jeremy was the only one that i know that actually is shocking which sounds so mean there was something i was gonna say like at the when they were doing the detour like they started it and like immediately sandy's like this is hard this is really hard and i feel like they say that a lot yeah like this is too hard we're never gonna get this but they don't switch they just complain yeah
The Amazing Rewatch: They always threaten to switch. Yeah. Should we switch? Should we sch switch? Wow. Switch. Should we switch? Should we switch? What was the thing that you're going to tell us about last episode? You said, oh, there was an interesting.
The Amazing Rewatch: Oh, this was like three episodes ago now. what You just said it today. You just said it before we watched this episode. I did. Because i said i said yesterday when we recorded two episodes that I forgot to say that The clue box in Hamburg train station was the first time we've seen an actual traditional clue box.
The Amazing Rewatch: Everything else has been like a basket. Yeah, that was a long time ago.
